Opis:
In the paper the paths of bubbles emitted from the brass nozzle with inner diameter equal to 1.6 mm have been analyzed. The mean frequency of bubble departure was in the range from 2 to 65.1 Hz. Bubble paths have been recorded using a high speed camera. The image analysis technique has been used to obtain the bubble paths for different mean frequencies of bubble departures. The multifractal analysis (WTMM - wavelet transform modulus maxima methodology) has been used to investigate the properties of bubble paths. It has been shown that bubble paths are the multifractals and the influence of previously departing bubbles on bubble trajectory is significant for bubble departure frequency f[b] > 30 Hz.

Opis:
Two types of submerged membrane bioreactors (MBR): hollow fiber (HF) and hollow sheet (HS), have been studied and compared in terms of energy consumption and average shear stress over the membrane wall. The analysis of energy consumption was made using the correlation to determine the blower power and the blower power demand per unit of permeate volume. Results showed that for the system geometries considered, in terms the of the blower power, the HF MBR requires less power compared to HS MBR. However, in terms of blower power per unit of permeate volume, the HS MBR requires less energy. The analysis of shear stress over the membrane surface was made using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling. Experimental measurements for the HF MBR were compared with the CFD model and an error less that 8% was obtained. For the HS MBR, experimental measurements of velocity profiles were made and an error of 11% was found. This work uses an empirical relationship to determine the shear stress based on the ratio of aeration blower power to tank volume. This relationship is used in bubble column reactors and it is extrapolate to determine shear stress on MBR systems. This relationship proved to be overestimated by 28% compared to experimental measurements and CFD results. Therefore, a corrective factor is included in the relationship in order to account for the membrane placed inside the bioreactor.

A mathematical model enabling a quantitative description of wet oxidation of excess sludge in continuous bubble columns is proposed. The model consists of mass and heat transfer kinetic equations and material and heat balance equations of gas and liquid phases flowing through the absorber. The equations of material and heat balance refer to a parallel, co- current flow of gas and liquid phase and take into account a complex chemical reaction in the liquid phase core. The proposed model was used in a numerical simulation of wet oxidation in a bubble absorber for different process conditions: flow rate and composition of the gas and liquid phase, temperature and pressure, and different heights and diameters of the column.

Opis:
In this work a novel cyclonic-static micro bubble flotation column, using hydraulic separator with a conventional flotation column, was developed to separate oil droplets from emulsions. The system integrated the cyclonic and laminar flow coalescence with the pipe flow coalescence. The effect of process parameters such as circulation pressure, aeration rate, feed volumetric flow rate and viscosity of fluid on the efficiency of multi-flow pattern coalescence was investigated. The obtained results indicated that the coalescence efficiency increased with the circulation pressure, feed volumetric flow rate and aeration rate, whereas an increase in viscosity of fluid reduced the extent of coalescence. Besides, the size distribution of oil droplets in the cyclonic separator, pipe flow section and column flotation section were simulated in the flotation column using a special software. The simulation was compared with experimental data on the mean size of oil droplets.

Opis:
A cyclonic-static micro-bubble flotation column was applied to upgrade fine ilmenite. The optimum parameters of flotation in the column were determined basing on the grade-recovery upgrading curve. A continuous pilot plant test was conducted using the optimum parameters during rougher-cleaner process. When compared with the optimized parameters of the industrial flotation machines, the cyclonic-static micro-bubble flotation column provides higher concentrate grade and recovery: 48.11% with a growth of 1.08 percentage points and 82.36% with an increment of 13.64 percentage points, respectively. Moreover, the flowsheet is simplified to two steps (rougher-cleaner) in the cyclonic-static micro-bubble flotation column from six steps (one rougher-two scavengers-three cleaners) in the flotation machines. Therefore, the cyclonic-static micro-bubble flotation column is an effective tool for fine ilmenite beneficiation.

Opis:
The cyclonic-static micro-bubble flotation column (FCSMC) performs well in fine mineral flotation. Compared to traditional flotation columns, its design innovatively introduces a cyclonic structure. The separation of middling and tailing occurs in the cyclonic flow field induced by a cyclonic reversal cone. In this study, the particle size distribution analysis and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were conducted to reveal the particle distribution law and the classification mechanism in cyclonic flow fields under different circulation pressures. The results showed that particle size showed the same distribution tendency as tangential velocity in the radial direction: both increase from the center and decrease around the wall. As circulation flux increased, the tangential velocity increased, and the particle size differences in the radial direction also increased. The position of the largest particles will move to outside as the largest value of tangential velocity migrates the outward in the radial direction. According to the particle size distribution of the feed, it can be adjusted to the flow field to change the particle distribution, thereby improving the efficiency of separation. This study has an important guiding significance for column design and adjustment of the operating parameters of the flotation process.

Opis:
Barbotage reactors such as airlift reactors (ALR) and bubble column reactors (BCR) due to their two-phase flow are the subject of many studies. Their basic version is used for lifting, mixing, and aeration of liquids, while their hybrid version, supplemented with additional elements, can serve as a rector for transport, lifting, and aeration of liquids. The subject of the research were two design variants of a hybrid barbotage reactor differing in the position of the nozzle for circulation and aeration, both filled with a moving bed. Based on the previously obtained measurement results, a simple mathematical equation was proposed to describe the impact of the type of construction and filling the hybrid reactor with a moving bed on the oxygen concentration and mixing conditions as well as on the transport of liquids. It was found that the greatest impact on the transport of liquid in the hybrid barbotage reactor (HBR) had the location of the H-nozzle, and filling the reactor with a moving bed had the greatest impact on the oxygen conditions and mixing of the liquid in the case of the HBR reactor.

Opis:
Purpose This paper aims to prepare depolymerized polyethylene terephthalate (DPET) powder from recycled plastic water bottles. Adding this DPET powder to the cement mortar was also studied. Design/methodology/approach The adopted PET depolymerization process includes the usage of both ethylene glycol (EG) as solvent and nano-MgO as a catalyst. A bubble column reactor was designed for this process. Five different mortar groups were made; each has different DPET content of 0%, 1%, 3%, 6% and 9% as a sand replacement. The flexural strength test and the water absorption measurement are done after two curing periods: 7 and 28 days. Findings The research finding demonstrated that the flexural strength of mortar was reduced by increasing the DPET powder percentage and the maximum dropping was 15% when 9% of DPET was added. The ability of the mortar to absorb the water was reduced by 14.5% when DPET powder was 9%. The mortar microstructure is featured with fewer cavities and porosity. Research limitations/implications This work’s employed bubble column technique is limited only to the laboratory environment and needs to be scaled up within industrial mass production. For future research, it is suggested to decrease depolymerization time by using smaller pieces of plastic water bottle waste and trying other types of nanocatalyst. Practical implications The modified mortar can be utilized in areas where moisture, rainfalls, and sanitation systems exist. Originality/value The article claims that depolymerized waste PET improves chemical process efficiency by lowering reaction time and improving mass and heat transfer rates. Besides, this approach saves money. It is found out that the depolymerized plastic waste is much more functional due to its high cohesion capability than being used as small PET pieces.

Opis:
The paper presents different approaches to the proper and accurate production and modelling (multi- phase reaction) of CaCO3 formation in the most popular, different types of reactors, i.e. continuous reactor (STR – stirred tank reactors, MSMPR – mixed suspension, mixed product removal; tube reactor), a bubble column reactor and a thin film reactor. Many different methods of calcium carbonate production and their effect on the various characteristics of the product have been presented and discussed. One of the most important, from the point of view of practical applications, is the morphology and size of the produced particles as well as their agglomerates and size distribution. The size of the obtained CaCO3 particles and their agglomerates can vary from nanometers to micrometers. It depends on many factors but the most important are the conditions calcium carbonate precipitation and then stored. The experimental research was strongly aided by theoretical considerations on the correct description of the process of calcium carbonate precipitation. More than once, the correct modelling of a specific process contributed to the explanation of the phenomena observed during the experiment (i.e. formation of polyforms, intermediate products, etc.). Moreover, different methods and approaches to the accurate description of crystallization processes as well as main CFD problems has been widely reviewed. It can be used as a basic material to formulation and implementation of new, accurate models describing not only multiphase crystallization processes but also any processes taking place in different chemical reactors.

Opis:
In the self-designed flotation column simulation system, the foaming characteristics of the micro-bubble countercurrent contact flotation column used in the hematite cation column flotation process are systematically studied. The objective of this study is to investigate the bubble generation by a bubble generator in the flotation column. The bubble image was obtained by the high-speed camera recorder, and the bubble diameter was calculated and analyzed by image processing software. The distribution characteristics of the bubble size under different aeration conditions and with different reagent concentrations were investigated. The results show that as the aeration increases, the average diameter bubbles increases, the bubble size distribution changes from narrow to wide, and the number of small bubbles decreases. The cationic collector GE-609 can change the bubble shape. As the concentration increases, the bubble shape gradually changes from an irregular shape to a standard spherical shape. When the concentration of GE-609 exceeds 2.5 mg/dm3, the average circularity C of the bubbles in the bubble group stabilizes at 1, and the increase in concentration no longer changes the bubble shape. GE-609 also has an efficient foaming effect, as the concentration increases, the bubble diameter distribution changes significantly, the proportion of small bubbles increases, and the proportion of large bubbles decreases significantly. When the critical concentration is exceeded, the bubble diameter distribution probability density peak width no longer changes significantly. Compared with the two types of alcohol foaming agents, GE-609 produces a bubble Sauter diameter close to that of 2-octanol and slightly lower than terpineol.

Opis:
Bubble-particle interactions play an important role in flotation. This study examines the behaviour of bubble clusters in a turbulent flotation cell. Particularly, the bubble-particle interaction characteristics in flotation are investigated. The bubble size in a flotation column was measured using an Olympus i-SPEED 3 high-speed camera. Relationships between the circulating volume, bubble size and bubble terminal velocity were discussed. Probabilities of collision, attachment, detachment and acquisition between bubbles and particles in different circulating volumes were calculated based on the flotation kinetic theory. Using the extended Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek (EDLVO) theory, the relationship between the potential energy and distance in bubble-particle interaction was analysed. The results demonstrated that as the circulating volume increased, the bubble size and velocity decreased. When the circulating volume increased from 0.253 to 0.495 m3/h, the bubble diameter decreased from 511 to 462 μm, and the corresponding bubble velocity decreased from 43.1 to 37.5 mm/s. When the circulating volume remained constant as the particle size increased, probabilities of collision, attachment, detachment and acquisition increased. When the particle size remained constant as the circulating volume increased, these probabilities also increased. At a constant circulating volume as the particle size increased, the absolute value of the total potential energy between the particle and bubble increased. When the distance between the bubble and particle was 30 nm, the energy barrier appeared.
