Opis:
Contaminations of industrial metals into the river possess major threat to environment. Chromium is a heavy metal which has the wide applications in tannery and electroplating industries. Above the permitted level of Chromium(VI) into surface water leads to severe health hazards. Therefore, biosorption is a technology used for the sorption of heavy metal. In this present study adsorption isotherm models was studied for the biosorption of chromium by cherry leaves. From the adsorption isotherms it was found that the experimental data fits well with the Langmuir isotherm than the Freundlich isotherm. The monolayer capacity Qm was fond to be 11.98 mg/l and the adsorption affinity was found to be positive which indicates the efficient biosorption of chromium.

Biosorption is an attractive technology which is used for the sorption of substances by a biomaterial. In this present work the heavy metal chromium was subjected to biosorption because of their non-degradability nature and causes water and land pollution. Cherry leaves were used as a biomaterial for the biosorption. Kinetic studies were performed for the biosorption experiment. From the experiment it was found that the reaction follows pseudo first order reaction because of the larger value of regression coefficient R2 and lower value of standard errors (χ2) for pseudo first order reaction than second order reaction.

Opis:
Discharge of metal containing effluents into water has been a cause of major concern. Traditional treatment methods are proving to be ineffective and expensive. Chitosan was studied as a potential biosorbent due to its positive charge and relatively low cost. The study involves evaluating the metal binding performance of chitosan in a Polymer Enhanced Diafiltration (PEDF) system which uses an ultra filtration membrane to retain the chitosan which, in turn, binds the metal, thereby preventing passage into the permeate stream. Conditions for binding such as pH, concentration of polymer and chromium were studied. Optimal performance was obtained when the system was operated at pH values lower than the pKa of chitosan i.e. 6.3. Using 6 g/L chitosan at pH 4.0, chromium concentration was reduced to less than 1mg/L from a feed concentration of 20 mg/L. Equilibrium dialysis experiments were done to study the kinetics of binding and the uptake of metal per gram of polymer. Rheological measurements demonstrated that in the presence of 1-100 mM chromate, chitosan was found to be slightly shear thickening at low concentrations such as 4 g/L and 6 g/L whereas it was slightly shear thinning at higher concentrations like 12 g/L and 20 g/L This suggests that neutralization of chromium anions is due to the interaction of multiple chitosan molecules. This result is consistent with the relatively stiff nature of the polysaccharide. Overall, this study suggests that some modification of the native polymer would be required to improve uptake and make it an industrially workable process.

Opis:
This study aims at investigating the potential of Acacia gerrardii pod for the removal of Cr(VI) in batch system. Effect of solution pH, biosorbent dosage, initial concentration of Cr(VI), contact time on the removal process was examined. Complete removal of hexavalent chromium was achieved at pH values 1.0 and 2.0 whereas maximum removal of total chromium was obtained at pH of 3.0. The study showed that the biosorption and bioreduction mechanisms were involved in the removal process. The time required for complete removal of Cr(VI) using the pod of Acacia gerrardii was shortened with an increase in biomaterial dosage and decrease in Cr(VI) concentration. Kinetic data was well described using Park kinetic model. Freundlich isotherm model adequately fitted the equilibrium data indication multilayer adsorption of total chromium on the surface of biomaterial. The pod of Acacia gerrardii could be used efficiently for the removal of hexavalent chromium from aqueous solutions.

The adsorption of Eurozol Navy Blue (ENB) reactive dye was examined using banana peel and sugarcane bagasse powders. Several parameters such as pH, contact time, agitation speed, temperature, initial dye concentration, and adsorbent dosage were considered and their impact on dye adsorption efficiency was evaluated. The removal percentages of ENB dye due to adsorption on banana peel and sugarcane bagasse were 72% and 70%, respectively. Simultaneous dosing of both biosorbents resulted in 68% dye removal. The Langmuir isotherm model was found to fit the adsorption of ENB dye on banana peel and sugarcane bagasse powders. The corresponding maximum adsorption capacities were equal to 24.09, 32.46, and 27.54 mg/g for banana peel powder, sugarcane bagasse powder, and the mixture of adsorbents, respectively.

Opis:
Aloe vera leaves (AVL), a by-product of agricultural waste, have been applied as a biosorbent for reducing Ni(II) ions in aqueous solutions. The biosorption capability of AVL powder was enhanced through chemical treatment with 0.10 M citric acid solution. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectrophotometer, scanning electron microscope coupled with energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX), pH of point-zero-charge (pHPZC), and pHslurry analyses were used to study the surface, and chemical properties of citric acid-treated Aloe vera leaf powder (CAAVLP). The setting for experiments such as pH solution, CAAVLP dose, initial concentration, and biosorption time was investigated. Maximum Ni(II) ion biosorption capability was determined to be 48.65 mg/g based on the Langmuir model at pH 6, a CAAVLP dose of 0.02 g, initial Ni(II) concentrations of 5 to 50 mg/L and biosorption time of 120 min. The data for the isotherm and kinetics were well matched with the Freundlich and pseudo-second-order models, respectively, with high regression correlation (R2) and low chi-square (χ2) values. The presence of more-COOH groups after treating AVL with citric acid resulted in more Ni(II) ions being able to be removed.

The removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions using walnut shells was investigated. The effects of pH, contact time, initial metal concentration, adsorbent concentration, and co-ions were studied in synthetic solutions. Metal uptake was found to be dependent on the initial pH of the solution; the removal rate increased upon increasing pH, showing the highest affinity at pH 5–7. The amount of metal removed improved with increasing initial concentration. Increasing adsorbent dosage enhanced removal efficiency, but reduced the amount absorbed per unit mass of walnut shells. The presence of co-ions suppressed the uptake of heavy metals, divalent ions having a more negative effect than monovalentions. The adsorption of Zn, Cd and Ni onto walnut shells was found to fit Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The results obtained in the tests with mining waste leachate showed the potential use of walnut shells for the removal of heavy metals.

Opis:
The paper specifies the contributors to the high and variable chlorine dioxide demand and points out the concomitant risk that the final extent of disinfection will be insufficient. The study has revealed a lack of correlation between chlorine dioxide demand and total organic carbon, SUVA and ozone. Ozonation followed by biofiltration through active carbon filters provides not only a decrease but also a stabilization of the chlorine dioxide demand.

Opis:
The authors investigated sorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions from aqueous solutions on selected natural wastes: sunflower hulls, walnut shells and plum stones. The chemical and physical structure of the surface of these sorbents was determined using infrared spectrometry and scanning electron microscopy. The most favourable physicochemical parameters of the sorption processes were also defined. The sorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions was described according to the Langmuir and Freundlich models. It has been shown that the adsorbents studied can be effectively used in removing heavy metals from aqueous solutions. The sunflower hulls have the highest sorption capacity for Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions. It is equal to 36.93 mg/g for the Pb(II) ions and 19.93 mg/g Cd(II) ions. The calculated values of thermodynamic functions indicate a spontaneous (ΔGº< 0) and exothermic (ΔHº< 0) nature of the sorption processes. A participation of ion exchange in these processes is significant. Desorption tests confirm that the adsorbed heavy metals can be recovered and the sorbent materials after regeneration can be reused.

Celem pracy była ocena możliwości wykorzystania biomasy drożdżowej do usuwania ołowiu z roztworów wodnych. Materiał badawczy stanowiły: drożdże piekarskie (BY), odpadowe drożdże browarnicze (WBY) oraz drożdże paszowe (FY), stanowiące łatwo dostępny odpad produkcyjny. Ilość biomasy drożdży (BY, WBY, FY) odpowiadającą 0,1 g suchej substancji zawieszano w 100 cm3 roztworu ołowiu (stężenie 200, 500 lub 1000 mg dm—3) i przeprowadzano biosorpcję przez 20, 40, 60, 90, 120, 240 i 300 minut. Stężenie ołowiu pozostałego w roztworze mierzono metodą adsorpcyjnej spektrometrii atomowej. Wielkość ładunku ołowiu usuniętego przez biomasę drożdży wyliczano na podstawie równania równowagi masowej biosorbenta, a wyniki dopasowywano do izotermy Langmuira. Testowane drożdże usuwały z roztworu ponad 90% ołowiu w ciągu 20 min procesu. Jednakże jedynie zastosowanie BY umożliwiało obniżenie poziomu Pb poniżej 1 mg dm—3 z roztworów o wyjściowym stężeniu 200 i 500 mg Pb dm—3. Wartość qmax oraz współczynnik powinowactwa b, wyznaczone dla drożdży piekarskich po 300 min biosorpcji, wynosify odpowiednio 1250 mg Pb g—1 s.s. i 0,363. Największą wydajność usuwania Pb wykazano stosując drożdże piekarskie (BY), gdy wyjściowe stężenie ołowiu wynosiło 500 mg dm—3. Stężenie równowagowe metalu po 300 min sorpcji wynosiło 0,66 mg dm—3, co odpowiada usunięciu przez biomasę drożdży piekarskich 99,86% ołowiu z roztworu.

In this research, the batch removal of Pb2+ ions from wastewater and aqueous solution with the use o two different modified algae Gracilaria corticata (red algae) and Sargassum glaucescens (brown algae) was examined. The experiment was performed in a batch system and the effect of the pH solution; initial concentration and contact time on biosorption by both biomasses were investigated and compared. When we used S. glaucescens as a biosorbent, the optima conditions of pH, Pb2+ concentration and equilibrium time were at 5, 200 mg/L and 70 min, in the range of 95.6% removal. When G. corticata was used for this process, pH 3, 15 mg/L pb2+ concentration and 50 min contact time, resulted in the maximum removal (86.4%). The equilibrium adsorption data are fitted to the Frundlich and Langmuir isotherm model, by S. glaucescens and G. corticata, respectively. The pb2+ uptake by both biosorbent was best described by the second-order rate model.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of synthetic dyes removal from aqueous solutions with the use of silage from common maize Zea mays L. as a biosorbent. Two dyes were used as adsorbates: cationic Basic Violet 10 (BV10) and anionic Reactive Black 5 (RB5). The silage from common maize Zea mays L. originated from the Department of Agrotechnology and Plant Production Management, University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn. Before experiments, the silage was dried at a temp. of 60°C for 12 h and then sieved through a sieve with mesh diameter of 0.25 mm. The scope of analyses included determinations of: the effect of biosorbent dose on the course of adsorption process, optimal time of dyes adsorption, and correlation between type of dye and effectiveness of the adsorption process. The effectiveness of RB5 and BV10 adsorption from aqueous solutions onto silage was analyzed based on a correlation between the quantity of adsorbed dye Q (mg/g d.m.), and its equilibrium concentration C (mg/dm3). Results obtained were analyzed with the use of four sorption isotherms: Freundlich, Langmuir, double Langmuir, and Redlich-Peterson. Poorer fit of experimental results to the model was achieved only in the case of Freundlich isotherm. The remaining three models were very well describing the results. Owing to the presence of negative functional groups like e.g. –COOH and –OH in silage, it has a negative charge in aqueous solutions. This has a beneficial impact on the effectiveness of sorption of positively-charged cationic dyes. In turn, electrostatic repulsion of a negatively-charged surface of a biosorbent and anionic dyes exerts a negative effect on sorption effectiveness. The maximum sorption capacity of silage determined for the cationic dye BV10 was ca. 180 mg/g d.m. and was significantly higher than the sorption capacity assayed for the anionic dye RB5 - ca. 80 mg/g d.m. In comparing the achieved results for the sorption of the analyzed dyes RB5 and BV10 onto maize silage with the effectiveness of dyes sorption on other biosorbents, it may be concluded that the waste maize silage displays very good sorption properties and may be successively applied for dye removal.
