Diesel engine components in the combustion chamber have been exposed to cyclic loadings under environmental effects, including high temperatures and corrosive fluids. Therefore, knowing the corrosion-fatigue behavior of materials is essential for designer engineers. In this article, pure fatigue and corrosion-fatigue behaviors of the piston aluminum alloy have been experimentally investigated. For such an objective, as-cast and pre-corrosive standard samples were tested by the rotary bending fatigue machine, under 4 stress levels. Some specimens were exposed to the corrosive fluid with 0.00235 % of the sulfuric acid for 100 and 200 hours. The results showed higher weight losses for 200 hours immersion times. As another result, it could be concluded that the lifetime decreased in pre-corrosive samples for both 100 and 200 hours of the immersion time, compared to that of as-cast specimens. However, such a lifetime reduction was more significant for 200 hours of the immersion time, especially within the high-cycle fatigue regime (or lower stress levels). Under high stress levels, both pre-corrosive sample types had almost similar behaviors. The field-emission scanning electron microscopy images of specimen fracture surfaces indicated that the brittle region of the fractured surface was larger for specimens after the 200 hours of corrosion-fatigue testing than the other specimen.

The article will be focused on analysis of properties of aluminum alloy for the casting of type Al-Mg. As an experimental material was used aluminum alloy EN AC 51200, supplied in a cast state without a heat treatment. It was produced by the continuous casting method. Experiments deal with microstructural material analysis, fractographic analysis, mechanical and fatigue tests. The microstructure of the testing sample was examined using an optical microscope Neophot 32. Fatigue properties of aluminum alloy was tested by three-point bending cyclic loading. The fracture surface of the testing sample was examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), where sample was observed on various stages of the fatigue process, its characteristics and differences of fracture surfaces.

Modern methods of testing materials require the use of the latest technologies and combining measurement and calculation methods. It is important to find a quantitative way of describing, among other things, the failures so that it can help to design with high accuracy. This paper studies loading orientations on crack shape and fracture surface changes. The advantage of the entire fracture surface method is simplicity and applicability in studies on other materials, shapes and loadings. A higher values of fracture surface parameters (Sx, Vx) was observed in failure specimens with lower σ/τ (B/T) ratios. It has been observed that largest crack lengths with a small number of cycles occur for loading combinations different then B=T. As well as analyzed surface parameters Sx, Vx, are higher for larger number of cycles to crack initiation (Ni) values.

The parameters of high-grade steel are influenced by a combination of factors, including chemical composition and production technology. The impurity content is also a key determinant of the quality of high-grade steel. Inclusions may also play an important role, subject to their type and shape. Inclusions may increase the strength of steel by inhibiting the development of micro-cracks. The analyzed material was one grade of medium-carbon structural steel. The study was performed on 6 heats produced in an industrial plant in 140 ton electric furnaces. The experimental variants were compared in view of the five heat treatment options. The results were presented to account for the correlations between the fatigue strength coefficient during rotary bending, the diameter of and spacing between impurities. The relationship between the fatigue strength and hardness of highgrade steel vs. the quotient of the diameter of impurities and the spacing between impurities was determined. The proposed equations contribute to the existing knowledge base of practices impact of impurities with various diameters and spacing between non-metallic inclusion on fatigue strength.

W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań wzrostu pęknięć zmęczeniowych próbek poddanych cyklicznemu zginaniu przy stałej amplitudzie momentu, wykonanych ze stali S355 z pachwinowymi spoinami. Badane próbki posiadały koncentratory naprężenia w postaci zewnętrznych, dwustronnych łagodnych karbów. Badania przeprowadzono przy stałej wartości współczynnika asymetrii cyklu R = -1 bez obróbki cieplnej i po takiej obróbce. W artykule zaprezentowano również wyniki badań mikrostruktury złączy spawanych z uwzględnieniem zmian zachodzących w materiale po obróbce cieplnej oraz wpływ tych zmian na trwałości zmęczeniowe próbek.
The paper presents the test results on the fatigue crack growth under cyclic bending specimens at constant moment amplitude made of S355 steel with fillet welds. Plane specimens with stress concentrators in form of the external two-sided blunt notches were tested. The tests were performed under constant value of the stress ratio R = -1 without and after heat treatment. The article also presents the test results of the microstructure of welded joints taking into account changes in the material after heat treatment and the impact of these changes on the fatigue life of specimens.

The article discusses the results of a study investigating the effect of the number of fine non-metallic inclusions (up to 2 μm in size) on the fatigue strength of structural steel during rotary bending. The study was performed on 7 heats produced in an industrial plant. Fourteen heats were produced in a 100 ton oxygen converter. All heats were subjected to vacuum circulation degassing. Steel sections with a diameter of 18 mm were hardened and tempered at a temperature of 200, 300, 400, 500 and 600°C. The experimental variants were compared in view of the applied melting technology and heat treatment options. The heat treatments were selected to produce heats with different microstructure of steel, from hard microstructure of tempered martensite, through sorbitol to the ductile microstructure of spheroidite. The results were presented graphically, and the fatigue strength of steel with a varied share of non-metallic inclusions was determined during rotary bending. The results revealed that fatigue strength is determined by the relative volume of fine non-metallic inclusions and tempering temperature.

The aim of this paper is to propose an algorithm for fatigue life determination with the use of widely-known criteria for the fatigue life considering proper determination of material characteristics, which are a function of the number of cycles to failure. The application of the modified algorithm has been presented within the criteria of Findley, Matake, Papadopoulos and Dang Van, and the results of calculations have been compared with test results for steels S355J2G3 and Ck45. For both materials analysed, the application of the modified algorithm in the fatigue criteria makes it possible to obtain much more precise results of the calculations for all types of the loading analysed.

The article presents the maps of xx stress component and compares values of analytical and numerical calculations for the stress intensity factor range of welded specimens with fillet welds which subjected to cyclic bending. The specimens were solid and welded. The numerical models were simulated with ABAQUS suite and numerical calculations performed with FRANC3D software.

The article discusses the effect of the diameter and spacing between impurities (size up to 2 μm) on the fatigue strength coefficient of structural steel during rotary bending. The study was performed on 21 heats produced in an industrial plant. Fourteen heats were produced in 140 ton electric furnaces, and 7 heats were performed in a 100 ton oxygen converter. All heats were desulfurized. Seven heats from electrical furnaces were refined with argon, and heats from the converter were subjected to vacuum circulation degassing. Steel sections with a diameter of 18 mm were hardened for 30 minutes from the austenitizing temperature of 880°C and tempered at a temperature of 200, 300, 400, 500 and 600°C. The experimental variants were compared in view of the applied melting technology and heat treatment options. The results were presented graphically and mathematically to account for the correlations between the fatigue strength coefficient during rotary bending, the diameter of and spacing between submicroscopic impurities. Equations for calculating the fatigue strength coefficient at each tempering temperature and a general equation for all tempering temperatures were proposed. Equations for estimating the fatigue strength coefficient based on the relative volume of submicroscopic non-metallic inclusions were also presented. The relationship between the fatigue strength and hardness of highgrade steel vs. the quotient of the diameter of impurities and the spacing between impurities, and the fatigue strength and hardness of steel vs. the relative volume of submicroscopic non-metallic impurities were determined.

W niniejszej pracy opisano porównanie trwałości zmęczeniowej na zginanie dwóch materiałów platerowanych z materiałem podstawowym. Materiałem podstawowym była stal węglowa P3335NH o grubości 10 mm, zaś materiałami platerowanymi były stale austenityczne 254SMO oraz 316L. W ramach pracy przeprowadzono badania ultradźwiękowe i badania statyczne takie jak: próba rozciągania, próba ścinania, próba zginania oraz udarność. Jako kolejne przeprowadzone zostały badania rozkładu twardości w przekroju poprzecznym próbki. Ostatnie były badania na cykliczne zginanie przy czterech różnych obciążeniach. Z przeprowadzonych badań wynika, że blachy zostały połączone na całej powierzchni z wyłączeniem technologicznych marginesów wynoszących około 30 mm na stronę oraz punktu inicjacji detonacji, który z reguły zawsze jest obszarem niezgrzanym. Badania rozkładu twardości wykazały, że proces platerowania wybuchowego spowodował wzrost twardości materiałów w pobliżu linii złącza. Z badań na cykliczne zginanie wynika, że najwyższą trwałość zmęczeniową wykazuje sam materiał podstawowy w porównaniu z materiałami platerowanymi. W przypadku każdej próbki inicjacja pęknięcia następowała w materiale podstawowym.
This paper describes the comparison of fatigue life on bending of two claded materials with the base material. The base material was the carbon steel P3335NH of the thickness of 10 mm and the clad materials was austenitic steels 254SMO and 316L. As a part of the work, ultrasonic testing of static tests such as tensile tests, shear tests, bending tests and impact tests were performed. The hardness distribution tests in the cross-section of the sample was subsequently carried out. Last tests were the cyclic bending tests at four different loads. Surveys show that the plates are connected to the entire surface with the exclusion of technological margins of approximately 30 mm per side and the detonation initiation point, which, as a rule, is always a non-connected area. Hardness distribution tests shown that the explosive plating process has resulted in an increase in the hardness of materials near the joint line. The bending studies show that the highest fatigue life is the same as the base material compared to the cladding materials. For each sample, the crack initiation always started in the base material.

Fatigue behavior of the branch connection made of low-alloyed steel with yield stress of 355 MPa during low-cycle bending test is investigated in the article. Numerical prediction of the stress and strain distribution are described and experimentally verified by fatigue test of the branch connection sample. Experimental verification is based on low-cycle bending testing of the steel pipes welded by manual metal arc process and loaded by external force in the appropriate distance. Stresses and displacement of the samples induced by bending moment were measured by unidirectional strain gauges and displacement transducers. Samples were loaded in different testing levels according to required stress for 2.106 cycles. Increase of the stress value was applied until the crack formation and growth was observed. Results showed a high agreement of numerical and experimental results of stress and displacement.

The article will be focused on monitoring the influence of the structure on the fatigue properties of aluminium alloys for the casting of type Al-Mg. As an experimental material were used aluminium alloys EN AC 51200 and EN AC 51500, supplied in a cast state without a heat treatment. They were produced by the continuous casting method. These alloys were selected on the basis of the chemical composition, where the content of most alloying elements is comparable, only in the case of the concentration of magnesium are these alloys significantly different. Fatigue properties of aluminium alloys were tested by three-point bending cyclic loading. The fracture surface of the testing sample was examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), where samples were observed on various stages of the fatigue process, their characteristics and differences of fracture surfaces.

Non-metallic inclusions are one of the factors that influence the properties in particular fatigue strength of steel. The experimental material consisted of semi-finished products of medium-carbon structural steel. The production process involved three melting technologies: steel melting in a basic arc furnace with desulfurization or desulfurization and argon refining and in a oxygen converter and the next subjected to vacuum circulation degassing. This paper discusses the results of microstructural analyses, the changes in bending fatigue strength of steel hardened and tempered at different temperatures subjected to the size proportions and distances between the impurities of structural steel.

The research was done to carry out a comparative assessment of the durability of samples made of steel 45 in the initial state without chemical heat treatment and after ion nitriding in hydrogen-free media, to determine the effect of technological modes of ion nitriding on fretting fatigue. Tests were carried out on samples made of steel 45 subjected to ion nitriding in hydrogen-free media under different conditions. The tests were carried out on the standard machine UKI-10M designed for fatigue tests at bending. At article present results analysis of influence of process-dependent parameters of ion nitriding in hydrogen-free media on fretting fatigue of steel 45 exposed to the joint action of bending stress and contact stress. Ion nitriding in hydrogen-free saturating media eliminates hydrogen harmful effect on metal and significantly improves the durability of steel 45. The durability of structural elements at fretting-fatigue is seriously affected by process-dependant parameters of ion nitriding and residual compressive stress which can be optimized in terms of maximum durability.
Przeprowadzono badania porównawcze trwałości próbek wykonanych ze stali 45, w stanie początkowym bez obróbki cieplno-chemicznej oraz po azotowaniu jonowym w atmosferze wolnej od wodoru, w celu określenia wpływu sposobów technologicznych azotowania jonowego na zmęczenie przez fretting. Testy przeprowadzono na standardowej maszynie UKI-10M przeznaczonej do badań zmęczeniowych ze zginaniem. W pracy przedstawiono wyniki analiz wpływu parametrów procesu azotowania jonowego na zmęczenie przez fretting próbek ze stali 45 narażonych na działanie naprężeń zginających i naprężeń kontaktowych. Azotowanie jonowe w atmosferze bezwodorowej eliminuje szkodliwy wpływ wodoru na powierzchnię metalu i znacznie poprawia trwałość stali 45.

In this paper, an analysis of the fatigue strength of joints of fiberglass sucker rod under different bending stresses is performed and from this the key indicators of fatigue strength are derived. The main scope of fiberglass sucker rod is the use in aggressive environment because the plastic and glass fiber is not exposed to corrosion. Long-term strength and durability of operation – it’s the most important characteristics used in the design and operation realized in sucker rod, made of polymer composite materials (PCM). The aging of polymers and fiberglass sucker rod fracture leads to an emergency in the operation of oil wells and need to execute the workover. Based on the found contact problem solving using computers strength characteristics of the compounds were analyzed, dependence of contact pressure on the value of shear compliances of shell material, orthotropy option, size of joint were obtained.
