    Bernard Bolzano’s paper Rein analytischer Beweis des Lehrsatzes, dass zwischen je zwei Werthen, die ein entgegengesetztes Resultat gewähren, wenigstens eine reelle Wurzel der Gleichung liege was published in 1817. It presents a ”purely analytic proof” of the intermediate value theorem for the polynomials of variable x. Aside from polynomials, Bolzano considers other kinds of functions, however the domain of these functions is not clearly defined. In this article, we show that the variable x ranges over real numbers. Specifically, we identify the axioms for the ordered field that Bolzano implicitly applies. We also identify the versions of continuity axiom, and show that while some of them are implicitly applied, others are explicitly stated as ”basics truths”.

    We present the history of two parallel (and equivalent) discoveries: the axiom of choice and the multiplicative axiom. Firstly, we consider the origins of the formulation of the multiplicative axiom. Next, we concentrate on Russell’s attitude towards the role of this axiom, which is closely related to his philosophy of mathematics. We also highlight some differences between Russell’s and Zermelo’s propositions.

    Given a partition P:L → ω of the lines in $ℝ^n$, n ≥ 2, into countably many pieces, we ask if it is possible to find a partition of the points, $Q:ℝ^n → ω$, so that each line meets at most m points of its color. Assuming Martin's Axiom, we show this is the case for m ≥ 3. We reduce the problem for m = 2 to a purely finitary geometry problem. Although we have established a very similar, but somewhat simpler, version of the geometry conjecture, we leave the general problem open. We consider also various generalizations of these results, including to higher dimension spaces and planes.

    Artykuł prezentuje różne postacie aksjomatu regularności (FA) oraz jego konsekwencje w systemie Zermelo-Fraenkla (ZFC). W pracy zasygnalizowane są pewne zastrzeżenia wobec FA oraz fakt, że nie jest on nieodzowny. Aksjomat ufundowania zachowuje swój apodyktyczny charakter tylko na gruncie teorii zbiorów regularnych – w innych przypadkach może nie być spełniony przez wszystkie zbiory. Jedna z najbardziej popularnych wersji FA nie może być traktowana jako miernik regularności zbiorów – nie oddaje ona bowiem w pełni ducha idei ufundowania
    The paper presents different formulations of regularity axiom (FA) and its consequences in Zermelo-Fraenkel’s system (ZFC). Some objections to the axiom are emphasized and its indispensability is examined. It is also proved that FA in one of its formulations cannot be treated like a measure of sets regularity, because it doesn't meet the requirements that it was intended to meet.

    In my article, I briefly present the axioms of Leon Chwistek’s theory of manifold reality (TMR). This theory is the basis of his theory of art (TMRA). The aim of my article is to present and discuss psychological foundations of Chwistek’s theory of art. In particular, I present and discuss: (1) two meanings of the notion “work of art” derived on the basis of two relations: work – experience of enthusiasm, and work – aesthetic experience; (2) two meanings of the notion “content of the work of art”; (3) relations between the axioms (beliefs) of TMR and means of every type of art contained in TMRA.

    While Florian Znaniecki’s work is best known through his joint work with William I. Thomas on The Polish Peasant in Europe and America, his most important work deals with the methodology and substance of sociology of culture, based on three origins: systems theory, the identification of cultural science along the Vico-Axiom (his culturalism), and his cultural realism. Of the major sources of specific sociology of culture, he analyses in The Method of Sociology (1934) as a system approach, types of cultural and sociological data, existing methodological tendencies and the development of analytic induction which means a conglomerate of logic principles and a principle based on exception rather than the rule of insight. His final work Cultural Sciences (1952) is an attempt to include data and their interpretation from a set of cultural sciences, whereby the functionality of sociology as a cultural specialty is increasing the sociologists specialize in the comparative studies of other cultural sciences.

    This paper presents Wacław Sierpiński – the first advocate of the axiom of choice. We focus on the philosophical and mathematical topics related to the axiom of choice which were considered by Sierpiński. We analyze some of his papers to show how his results effected the debate over Zermelo’s axiom. Sierpiński’s impact on this discussion is of particular importance since he was the first who tried to explore consequences of the axiom of choice thoroughly and asserted its undoubted significance to mathematics as a whole.

    The main aim of the paper was to draw attention to Wacław Sierpiński as not only a great mathematician but also a philosopher. We undertook the attempt of reconstruction of Sierpiński’s philosophy. To aim this goal we mainly based ourselves on Sierpiński’s habilitation lecture entitled The concept of correspondence in mathematics. The complementation of Sierpiński’s philosophical views were conclusions from his mathematical achievements, his scheme of research on The Axiom of Choice, and his attitude to this axiom.

    Celem artykułu jest prezentacja jednego z filozoficznych zastosowań teorii hiperzbiorów ZFA. Autorami tego pomysłu są Barwise i Etchemendy, którzy proponują nowe rozwiązanie antynomii kłamcy. Artykuł przedstawia tzw. koncepcję sądu (i prawdziwości) w ujęciu Russella. Zgodnie z tą koncepcją sąd Kłamcy posiada teoriomnogościową reprezentację w postaci obiektu . Zapis ten należy odczytywać: „sąd to sąd, który głosi, że jest fałszywy”. Kluczem do omawianego rozwiązania jest zdefiniowanie dwóch typów paradoksalności: paradoksalności względnej i paradoksalności bezwzględnej. Sąd jest paradoksalny bezwzględnie, jeżeli jest paradoksalny w każdym świecie, natomiast jest paradoksalny względnie, jeżeli jest paradoksalny w pewnych światach, ale nie we wszystkich.
    The objective of the paper is to discuss one of the philosophical applications of the hyperset theory ZFA. The idea is due to Barwise and Etchemendy, who proposed a new solution to the Liar paradox. The solution involves Russellian account of proposition (and truth). According to Russellian account, Liar proposition may be represented in set theory as: , to be read: „proposition is a proposition stating that is false”. The solution is based on the distinction between two kinds of paradoxicality: contingent paradoxicality and intrinsical paradoxicality. A proposition is intrinsically paradoxical, if it is paradoxical in every world, and is contingently paradoxical if it is paradoxical in some worlds but not in others.

    The authors attempt to carry out an analysis of the teaching process from the position of the utility theory and the social choice theory. They also stress the role of the value theory in the analysis of this process. The role of e-learning is also emphasized in the article.

    Przedmiotem badań podejmowanym w tekście jest jedna z głównych podstaw teoretycznych libertarianizmu: zasada autowłasności. Problemem badawczym artykułu jest pytanie: Czy zasada autowłasności jest aksjomatem? Metodą badawczą zastosowaną w artykule jest metoda disputatio. Na podstawie przeprowadzonych badań w tekście proponowana jest teza afirmatywna: zasada autowłasności ma status logiczny aksjomatu. Artykuł prezentuje wypracowaną siatkę pojęciową rozróżniającą samoposiadanie, auto własność i uzasadnienie autowłasności oraz rozwija linię argumentacyjną wskazującą, że choć prima facie to samoposiadanie, a nie autowłasność jest aksjomatem, to ponieważ samoposiadanie z konieczności implikuje autowłasność, to także autowłasność musi mieć status logiczny aksjomatu.
    The subject-matter of the present paper is one of the fundamental theoretical bases of the libertarian political philosophy: the principle of self-ownership. The research problem of the paper is the following question: Is the self-ownership principle an axiom? The research method employed in the paper is the method of disputatio. Based on the conducted research, the paper proposes the affirmative thesis: the self-ownership principle is an axiom. The paper presents a conceptual framework that distinguishes between self-possession, selfownership, and the justification of the latter. It also develops a line of argument which demonstrates that although prima facie only the self-possession is an axiom, self-possession necessarily implies selfownership, granting thereby the axiomatic status to the latter too.

    The affirmative answer to the title question is justified in two ways: logical and empirical. (1) The logical justification is due to Gödel’s discovery (1931) that in any axiomatic formalized theory, having at least the expressive power of PA (Peano Arithmetic), at any stage of development there must appear unsolvable problems. However, some of them become solvable in a further development of the theory in question, owing to subsequent investigations. These lead to new concepts, expressed with additional axioms or rules. Owing to the so-amplified axiomatic basis, new routine procedures like algorithms, can be reached. Those, in turn, help to gain new insights which lead to still more powerful axioms, and consequently again to ampler algorithmic resources. Thus scientific progress proceeds to an ever higher scope of solvability. (2) The existence of such feedback cycles – in a formal way rendered with Turing’s systems of logic based on ordinal (1939) – gets empirically supported by the history of mathematics and other exact sciences. An instructive instance of such a process is found in the history of the number zero. Without that insight due to some ancient Hindu mathematicians there could not arise such an axiomatic theory as PA. It defines the algorithms of arithmetical operations, which in turn help intuitions; those, in turn, give rise to algorithmic routines, not available in any of the previous phases of the process in question. While the logical substantiation of the point of this essay is a well-established result of logico-semantic inquiries, its empirical claim, based on historical evidences, remains open for discussion. Hence the author’s intention to address philosophers and historians of science, and to encourage their critical responses.

    We consider the question: when does a Ψ-space satisfy property (a)? We show that if $|A| < \got p$ then the Ψ-space Ψ(A) satisfies property (a), but in some Cohen models the negation of CH holds and every uncountable Ψ-space fails to satisfy property (a). We also show that in a model of Fleissner and Miller there exists a Ψ-space of cardinality $\got p$ which has property (a). We extend a theorem of Matveev relating the existence of certain closed discrete subsets with the failure of property (a).

    In the initial part of the article Frege’s texts are analyzed in order to present his position on the question of denotation of propositions and the fragment points to the motives that made Frege recognize logical value as the denotation of proposition. In its further part the article presents the position taken in this question by commentators of Frege’s thought. In the final part of the article it is shown what shape two versions of Frege’s axiom (semantic and ontological) formulated by R. Suszko assume.

    Opis:
    A review of optimization methods based on the axiom of uniform stress and finite element method (FEM) developed by Mattheck is given. Computer−aided optimization (CAO) and computer−aided internal organization (CAIO) methods for modeling adaptive growth of trees are described. Examples of mechanical self−optimization of internal structure and tree shape under various environmental conditions e.g. control of spiral grain formation, xylem ray structure, stem wound regeneration, sable−shaped tree stems, root system growth are discussed.
