Opis:
The article presents selected forms of the practical use of anthropology. The main aim of text is not an attempt at a complete presentation of practical anthropology. Fragmentation of the description is testimony to the fact that there have been selected only two categories belonging to the broad context of practical anthropology: applied anthropology and the project which extend their range beyond academic discourse. However, the character of anthropology is used to achieve their objectives. The publication is primary concerned with the status of the practical form of anthropology in anthropological discourse, its thematic and methodical range. Attention has been devoted to the historical conditions of the selected forms of anthropology.

The text is an introduction to psychological anthropology, a subdiscipline of culturalanthropology that looks into interactions linking cultural phenomena with human psychological processes. The history of the concept of psychological anthropology and its definitions is discussed and then juxtaposed with explanations of the concepts of ethno-psychology, cultural psychology, and cognitive anthropology. The discussion is contextualized by the history of the subdiscipline itself, which over the last 150 years has been developed and co-developed – often in a complex and convoluted way – by subsequent anthropological approaches and trends, with which it has at times been identified.
Tekst stanowi wprowadzenie do antropologii psychologicznej, subdyscypliny antropologii kulturowej zajmującej się interakcjami łączącymi zjawiska kulturowe z procesami psychologicznymi człowieka. Omówiono historię pojęcia antropologii psychologicznej i jej definicje, a następnie zestawiono ją z objaśnieniami pojęć etnopsychologii, psychologii kulturowej i antropologii poznawczej.

This article presents the research problems addressed in military anthropology. The central research hypothesis is a theoretical-cognitive problem concerning the object of cognition of military anthropology. In this sense, the two main understandings of military anthropology, American and Russian, are shown. Military anthropology develops an interest in culture as an area of struggle, competition, and combat. The article consists of three parts. The first part explains the theoretical issues and the historical development of military anthropology. The second part presents the Russian tradition in the development of that discipline. The third part presents the Polish tradition in which military anthropology is an auxiliary science of security sciences.

$e wordings presented by us do not belong to the most popular either in theNew Testament or in the afore-mentioned so-called authentic epistles of St. Paulthe Apostle. It does not mean, however, that they do not have those meanings.God’s word, also by their assistance, tells us about our human life. At this currentstage, we did not manage to possess this gi~ in full, which eternally stays withGod, or eternal salvation. Simultaneously, we are aware, however, that togetherwith the coming of Christ, our situation radically changed for the better. Weare not slaves anymore of such powers as sin or death. It is true that our liberationis neither complete nor final yet. We cannot go to the other extreme, however, and not to admit that we do not belong to them, that Life stays behindus, that He is already an absolute Lord now and Lord of us, ourselves and of allthis, which was created (cf. e.g. Philippians %:&2). In other words, following theApostle of nations, we could describe our current situation in the followingway. As Christians we are already in Christ (Greek: en Christô). In temporality, however, we are the successors of Adam: just as if our fates became “closed”,“programmed” in Adam. We remain beings limited by Death. We still andcontinually experience a frightening burden of its reign. Repeating the wordsof St. Paul we may reflect this aspect of our existence in temporality, reachingfor the expression “in death” as we still belong in its zone. We also “live” in itin some way. However, this is not everything. Our temporal life also has otheraspects. $us, to reflect on them, the Apostle will refer to the mystery of law /Law and to the mystery of what is material, in particular in man himself, to the mystery of thebody (Greek: sôma and sarx). As we noticed, also the last threemay be something negative, captivating a man, not least serving for his good.A man, waiting for his meeting with Christ, or already living with this meeting,is also a living being, also in a pejorative sense, in body (en sômati and en sarki). We can state the same about another of God’s gi~s, about law / Law, as well asabout order, which the Apostle reflects on by the expression “in law” / “in Law”.As we noticed, such a defined image is not unanimously negative. A manliving in a described situation has not lost his chance yet. He needs salvation andmay obtain it. When it occurs, his situation changes. $e transition is radical, although usually a given person gradually experiences it. It is o~en dividedinto their entire life. Most frequently the old order does not disappear at once.It becomes partially abolished, annihilated. It partially becomes transformed, cured. It partially influences us as well. Our temporality is such. And just as such,it constitutes time and place of salvific work of God and an integral part of theDivine economy. And it frequently outgrows our potential of understanding, reminding us at the same time about the place and role of faith, hope and love. One of the aspects of the Pauline vision of salvific work could be presentedin a great outline in this way. It is noticeable in a specific, interesting way in thewordings we come across in e.g. the so-called authentic epistles of St. Paul theApostle. $is, expressed by them, being God’s Word, refers not only to peopleliving in the Apostle’s time. It concerns people of all times. It concerns us also.

The text of Gaudium et spes has not yet become the basis for a systematic analysisfrom the point of view of Christian anthropology+>. We shall not conducta systematic analysis at the end of this article. We will only mention a fewissues that are particularly important in our opinion. 2e first issue is the veryarrangement of the first chapter of the Constitutions. It speaks firstly of thedignity of the individual, then of the human community, and only then does itmove on to the discussion of human activity in the world and the tasks of theChurch in the modern world. 2e anthropological concept of the text can beseen from the very layout of the chapters of the first part.2e idea is that the concept of the presence of the Church in the contemporaryworld, that is, the concept of the Church as a sign, that is, a modern conceptof pastoral ministry with the whole Church as a subject, depends on the rightattitude and resolution of the question of who I am and who I – man – become.2is is the basic premise of an anthropological structure, expressed in questionsabout the dignity of the person and the human community.

In this article I first tried to demonstrate that the theory of so-called braindeath is unsustainable from a scientific point of view. +e data that the medicalprofession provides on this subject clearly contradicts such a theory. It is impossibleto prove, on the basis of the knowledge available to this science thatpeople who are in a state of cerebral death are really dead. +e only thing thatthe doctor can say, without exceeding the limits of the discipline he represents,is that these people have a significant degree of brain damage. +is does notmean, however, that the brain is so damaged that is has ceased to perform all its functions. On the contrary, these patients usually show many symptomsof brain activity. Recognition of these sick people as dead, therefore, contradictsthe principles of the medical art.+e acceptance of the theory of so-called brain death has also given riseto many problems from the legal point of view. Recognition as a living or deceasedperson depends on the criteria for brain death, which vary from countryto country. +e law has therefore become arbitrary in such an important areaas human life and death.+e adoption of the theory of brain death on the basis of such un-robustscientific criteria has undoubtedly become possible only through the acceptanceof certain philosophical assumptions that reduce the human to his or herconsciousness. A permanent loss of consciousness was de facto considered to beevidence of human death. +is position contradicts the achievements of Christianthought in the field of philosophical anthropology, which emphasises theunity of the individual and the importance of his or her bodily aspect. Whatis even more important, however, is the fact that modern man tends to thinkin terms of moral utilitarianism. Many people believe that it is possible to sacrificethe life of a person who is seriously ill and who has no hope of improvement(in this case, a person with cerebral death syndrome) for the benefit of otherpatients. +is attitude explains the passivity of many circles and the failureto discuss such an important issue as the rightness or wrongness of the theoryof so-called brain death. It is not without significance that there is a specifictransplant lobby in individual countries, which puts moral pressure on entiresocieties to accept the removal of organs for transplantation from people whoare in a state of so-called brain death, and suppresses the discussion of moralproblems associated with it.It is necessary for the Catholic Church to develop a clear position on thismatter. +is has not yet happened. There is even a surprising lack of consensusamong various the authorities. However, some of the hierarchy of the CatholicChurch have already spoken on this matter. +ese include Cardinal Meissner,Archbishop of Cologne, who clearly rejected the theory of brain death as incompatiblewith the principles of the Church’s teaching8'. Pope John Paul IIalso wrote in the encyclical Evangelium Vitae: “Nor can we remain silent aboutthe existence of other, better camouflaged but no less dangerous forms of euthanasia. We would be dealing with them, for example, if, in order to obtain moreorgans for transplantation, we proceeded to collect these organs from donorsbefore they were declared dead according to objective and adequate criteria.”Although these words do not mention the concept of brain death, theyrefer to it indirectly. +is paper was written in order to draw attention to justsuch a moral problem hidden in the concept of so-called brain death. In conclusion, I would like to give the floor to one of the participantsin the discussion on brain death, Dr Tomoko Abe. She wrote: “It is true thatthe latest developments in science and technology have brought many benefits. At the same time, however, they have brought unprecedented confusion in philosophyand culture to our societies. Due to the destructive tendencies of thepresent day, it is becoming increasingly important to establish social standardsto protect the most vulnerable members of society, such as young children andunconscious patients who cannot defend themselves. We therefore concludethat the current diagnostic criteria for brain death should be abolished andthat a worldwide ban on transplants from people with cerebral death syndromeshould be introduced.”88Dr. Abe is not alone in a desire to overthrow the theory of so-called braindeath and to consider its criteria as non-scientific. +e same is demanded bymany other authors. +e voice of the Catholic Church in this matter is undoubtedlyone of the most important. As the greatest authority in the world in mattersof morality and human rights, it cannot fail to explain the issue of so-calledbrain death in its teaching.

1. It is true that the concept of creation takes on theological focus in Israel quitelate. e chosen nation was primarily interested in history and its relationto God, and then asked a question about the beginning of the world. Over time,as a result of historical events, it gradually developed a lesson on creation. Babylonianslavery played a decisive role in the theological reflection on creation. 2. The Old Testament texts testify that the statement “Yahweh has made heavenand earth” corresponds to a threefold theological intention. It has at the sametime a doxological, soteriological and polemic character. e Old Testamenttaken as a whole evokes a cosmogonic fact to praise the glory of the God of Israeland emphasise His transcendence, to question the worship of nature, freeingman from the caring cosmic and agrarian forces, and to guarantee salvationfor Israel and the world, relying on the power of God, able to make all thingsnew out of love for his chosen. 3. The Old Testament shows us that the theological reflection on the creationof the world and mankind has been expressed in various forms in the historyof Israel, there is no single formula of Israel’s faith in creation, but it is alwaysabout the same faith expressed in a formulation conditioned by the currentcultural context, always with the triple theological intentions mentioned above.is can be seen in the Old Testament writings, starting with the Jehovah andthe priestly writer, through Deutero-Isaiah and the author of the Book of Job,whose faith was later expressed in the first article of the creed: “I believe in Godthe Almighty Father, the Creator of heaven and earth.”

Opis:
Today’s anthropology attempts to relate the historicity and culturality of its concepts, viewpoints, and methods to the historicity and culturality of what is under investigation. Anthropology examines the findings of the human sciences and develops a critique of itself based on historical and cultural philosophy, thereby paving the way for the investigation of new questions and issues. At the heart of these efforts lies a restlessness of mind that cannot be stilled. Research in anthropology is not limited to certain cultural contexts or single epochs. Reflections on the integral historicity and culturality of the research enable the discipline to leave behind the Euro-centricity of the human sciences and to focus on the unresolved problems of the present and the future. This aim implies skepticism toward all-encompassing and universal anthropological interpretations, such as those occasionally found in biological science, for example. Anthropology is not a single discipline. It touches on many different sciences and disciplines, including philosophy. Speaking about anthropology in the humanities and social sciences, we have to consider the following five paradigms: 1) anthropology of evolution and hominization; 2) philosophical anthropology developed in Germany; 3) historical anthropology and the history of mentalities, initiated by historians in France and taking its cue from the Annales-School; 4) the American tradition of cultural anthropology, and 5) finally historical cultural anthropology. These paradigms also provide the basis for educational anthropology.
Mówiąc o antropologii nauk humanistycznych i społecznych należy rozważyć pięć następujących paradygmatów: 1) antropologię ewolucji i hominizacji; 2) antropologię filozoficzną opracowaną w Niemczech; 3) antropologię historyczną i historię mentalności, zapoczątkowane przez historyków we Francji i czerpiące inspiracje ze Szkoły Annales; 4) amerykańską tradycję antropologii kulturowej, 5) wreszcie antropologię historyczno- kulturową. Powyższe paradygmaty stanowią również podstawę antropologii edukacyjnej.

Each of the artefacts mentioned in the title is an exemplification of products of the anthropological “Other”. Each of them comes from a distinct geographical region and represents an entirely different culture. However, all of them have been connected together in the Western culture realia as a result of a particular type of displacements. The first displacement involved their physical migration – first to European museums of natural history and ethnological museums. The next one resulted in their emergence on the market of exotic “oddities” whereas yet another displacement located them within the conceptual framework delimited by the artistic discourse. This last displacement shows that it is very difficult to understand or “translate” one culture into another because the conceptual framework of the “translator” is always determined by their own culture.

“Cancer. Anthropological study of practice and narration” by Hubert Wierciński is a work in the field of medical anthropology, a discipline gaining recent popularity in Poland. Author interviewed 44 people at selected medical facilities and among oncological patient’s organizations members. Using tools developed in so called “narrative paradigm” which has been founded in the 80’s of XX century, he describes world of people suffering from cancer. Wierciński challenges the idea that the life medicalization process is unambiguously harmful for the patients – a view developed by critical theory. According to authors notion, modern medicine helps patients organizing their experience and delivers useful language for its description. Gathering data supporting this view is certainly an important achievement. Other one is drawing attention on patient’s organizations importance for regaining psychological well-being process. The major drawback of Wierciński work is ambiguous metaphor according to which “narration is a medicine”. It can be understood in two ways: 1) having language which organizes experience of illness can improve chances for survival for cancer patients, 2) describing painful experiences can contribute in regaining psychological well-being. However, neither oncology nor psychology cannot support either of those theses. Description of the world of cancer patients focuses on aspects which are left unsaid, however analytical category of “tabu” wasn’t sufficiently conceptualized and operationalized. For this reason, part of work which focuses on poorly known aspects of illness, has purely descriptive value. Goals which were set by author were only partially achieved.

The former is taught at medical school, the latter is often neglected. Of fundamental importance are the classical philosophical questions about what is life and what is human being. Those cannot be answered by a natural scientific approach alone. For this reason and in view of the preponderance of technology in the daily routine in clinics, many medical students and physicians would like to be offered an optional subject which focuses on those philosophical problems: a training in anthropology and philosophy, called Philosophicum. To meet this demand, the University Hospital of Würzburg has been offering a Philosophicum ever since 2010 (www.philosophicum.ukw.de).

Three comments on the Book of Genesis and the treatise On the Trinity enabledus to become acquainted with the Augustinian teaching on the image of Godin man in the mystery of Creation. anks to such a narrowing of the source material,we could more carefully and with greater prudence analyze the thoughtsof the Bishop of Hippo. We hope that in this way we managed to avoid the riskof superficiality and we took into account all the statements of Saint Augustineregarding the problem posed. Unfortunately, L. Krupa did not prevent himself from committing this mistakeN8. He did not take up the subject of human natureas an image of God, and completely passed over in silence the polemics of theBishop of Hippo with Gnostics, who regarded the human family as the imageof the Holy Trinity. Based on the analysis carried out, we could see that accordingto Saint Augustine’s image of God in man is to be sought in his soul, andin the strict sense, in this “part” of him, which is focused on the contemplationof eternal ideas. e essence of the image of God is expressed in the ability of thesoul to participate in God’s life. All this reflects, as Saint Augustine states, thetrue honour and dignity which man owes to his Creator. A characteristic featureof God’s image, even a basic one – in view of the Augustinian approach – is itstrinitarian character.Saint Augustine tried to seek the traces of the Holy Trinity everywhere.is significant task was the passion of his life. Finally, he has found the imageof the Holy Trinity in man. He tried to provide his readers with an insight intothis reality through the trinitarian analogies, the source of which he discoveredin the structure of the human soul. Considering the entirety of St. Augustine’steaching on the image of God in man in the mystery of Creation, the analogousimages of the Holy Trinity in the soul seem to be the most interesting for us.On the other hand, like Saint Augustine, however, we are aware of their greatlimitations. For what is created, even in its most beautiful representation, in comparisonwith the Creator will always be in a vulnerable and poor condition.

What conclusions of the Pope’s doctrine are significant for our way of teachingthe treaty on Redemption?/) e lecture should include an analysis of the concrete existential situationof today’s individual, our nation and all modern humanity. Awarenessof the contemporary existential situation and contemporary conditions shouldbe both a starting point in the considerations on the Redemption, their relevanceand indispensability, as does political theology or liberation theology in theirown way, and the basis which makes it possible that lectures on Redemptionwould demonstrate its significance for today’s man and teach people effectiveconcern for specific matters of existence of Others. When talking about theeffects of Redemption, one should ask what is its significance today for human existence, for example in the burning matter of human dignity and rights, orin the field of the Church’s tasks in the world. us, both the starting point andeffects of the Redemption should be presented in a concrete way, in relationto the current socio-historical situation, based on current experience.() All teaching on the Redemption should be based on biblical sources, obviously interpreted in light of the last Council and entire Christian Tradition.Referring – to a greater extent – to the content and statements presentedin the Bible, may help to overcome the abstractness and the one-sidednessof traditional soteriological treaties, which consider Redemption only in termsof substitute compensation, the most perfect sacrifice and individualistic andethical participation in the atonement and merits of Christ.X) It is necessary to harmoniously combine – as the Pope does in his Encyclical– various aspects of the doctrine of the Redemption, o6en interpreted separatelyin earlier theological treaties. In the spirit of such a harmonious synthesis,it is necessary to demonstrate the relationship between the work of Redemptionand the work of creation, between the Incarnation and the Passover of Christ, between man’s Redemption and the Redemption of the whole world, betweenmoral liberation from sin and social liberation from all forms of oppression, the concern for eternal salvation and for authentic humanism in earthy life.Z) Among many biblical categories that provide a closer view on the mysteryof Redemption, it is especially important to present the category of love, notonly in order to overcome the narrow, legal and social approach to Redemptionin terms of satisfaction and merit, but above all because love is a preeminentcategory in the theory of Christian revelation, the attitude and action mostappropriate for God and for every human being, and the source or bond of trueand full communion between people and God.9) One should teach about the Redemption using a concrete language, and not the abstract one. When analyzing the biblical texts it is necessary to explainthat the revelation of the mystery of the Redemption took place gradually, within the framework of history, in the context of certain cultural categories, that people were redeemed from the situation of sin through concrete events, carried out by God throughout history, especially through life, death and resurrectionof Christ.e Christ who lived in a certain place and in a certain time carried outthe Redemption by restoring the broken covenant of mankind with God, andtoday He allows us to enjoy the effects of the Redemption. rough meetingand uniting with Him in faith and love, confirmed and strengthened in thesacraments, each person regains the highest dignity and the possibility of fulldevelopment. us, the teaching on Redemption using a concrete language will be thus also tantamount to emphasizing the historical, Christocentric andpersonalist character of Redemption.Y) Finally, following the biblical approach, one should refrain from confiningoneself to recognize the mystery of the Redemption in a purely objectiveand essentializing manner – which was common in earlier textbooks – fromcarrying out considerations about its essence in isolation from man and hissituation, but instead one should try to recognize this mystery in terms of itsrole in human life and humanity, its significance for specific human history, itsinfluence on human activity and human culture.

The arguments presented here can be qualified as a part of the more extensiveproblem concerning relations between the Christian religion and human nature. We have only limited ourselves to paying attention to the essential componentsof the religious phenomenon&Y. It seems, however, that in the context of all thesetheological theses and church rites, the question should be posed about howthey arise from human existence as well as how they can serve it since only thenwould their fully anthropological value be fully manifested. What is more, oneshould refer to a religious phenomenon as such and consider Christianity in itscontext. Christian religion, in spite of its essential separateness from other religions, shares many common features with them. Christians, therefore considerimportant the philosophical question of whether religiousness defines man to thesame extent as the category homo sapiens, homo socialis, homo faber, etc. does&_.e problem of the role that religion plays in human life is also significant. Manyscholars, for example, emphasize the personality-forming role of religion andits role in maintaining man’s mental health;`.Man is then the point of reference when proving the raison d’être of theChristian religion. It is not enough to say that the Church comes from God, wemust also justify that it is necessary for people.Similarly, the problem of verification of the Christian religion does notonly consist in proving that the present-day Church comes from Christ and thatin its historical duration it remains faithful to the will of its founder, but alsoin justification of the thesis that it represents the value necessary for people. Since according to the scholastic principle of verum, it can be considered ensand bonum at the same time. e latter is, however, an anthropological issue. Also dogmatic and moral theology, not to mention practical theology andtheology of internal life, which by their very nature deal with man, is characterizedby an anthropological attitude. We have already mentioned that contemporaryCatholic theology is strongly inclined towards anthropology. It must beadded here that the interests of dogmatics and moral theologians should not belimited to the mere interpretation of revealed truths about man, but should alsotake into account the confrontation of these truths with the experience of a manabout himself. en the relevance and validity of dogmatic theorems will becomeclearer and indications of moral theology will become more convincing.

Opis:
Two general remarks arise from the synthetic interpretation of the biblical christocentrismpresented by Saint Hilary. e first concerns the subject of theologicalstudy and biblical studies. e above-mentioned presentation of the argumentsof Hilary implies that the mystery of Christ manifesting itself in history, of whichhe is the creator and interpreter at the same time, constitutes the essence of theologyand exegesis. e biblical senses, considered as the result of biblical andtheological research and study, in this approach are nothing but different aspectsof incomprehensible mystery of Christ. Because the mystery of Christ is revealedin history and is history itself, therefore the theological and exegetical studyis of a historical nature at least in the sense that this mystery can be recognizedby applying the aspect-oriented method by comparing what is contained in theScriptures with what people are currently experiencing in a particular episodeof history, because the creator of the latter is Christ. One could say that it seemsto follow from the last statement, that for Saint Hilary, there are no rigid formsof dogmas established once and for all but one: the incomprehensible mysteryof Christ. Although always and everywhere studied, it will never be understoodand expressed in words. In the act of studying it, a person constantly extractsnew aspects from it. It is the task of the exegete and theologian to update it,to make the faithful acquainted with the complexity of its message. If ordinarybelievers do this even at liturgical meetings, then, according to Hilary, eventhough they have not completed specialist theological and biblical studies, theycan read and interpret the holy text fruitfully.e second remark indicates the conditions sine qua non of the existenceand operation of the theologian, exegete, no matter if he is a specialistor an ordinary faithful. ese conditions are faith in Christ and perservancein participation in the Christological reality of the Church and the communityof the faithful. e above claim does not undermine the value of biblical andtheological studies – as understood by us in terms of erudite knowledge. Scholarlybiblical commentaries and the theological and historical writings of Saint Hilary can be regarded as the denial of such a conclusion. e Bishop of Poitiers,by encouraging his readers – by his own example – to intellectual and moralpreparation for the study of the Scriptures, also emphasizes the pointlessnessof practicing exegesis and theology if it is not accompanied by faith in Christ,in isolation from tradition, the continuity of history, finally in isolation fromthe community of the members of Church.

The article pertains to the notion of audio-anthropology both as the methodology and the way of practice of the discipline through sound. The audio-anthropology should be understood as application of digital audio technologies relating to recording, editing, arranging, listening and publishing: a) cultural sonic manifestations, b) audio-representations. In other words, the audio-anthropology is the audio-production of anthropological knowledge. As an alternative way of „doing discipline” the audio-anthropology is the result of so called auditory turn which had raised the question of the authoritarianism of Eye – fundamental and irrefutable organ of insight into the socio-cultural reality. Practice of sounded anthropology casts doubt on oculocentric model of anthropological knowledge and leads to appreciation of sonic phenomenon and practices in a social life.

‘Folklore’ has not been a powerful academic discipline in France. This is not just a question of an alien term that failed to take root: the paradigm of folklore studies has never enjoyed much success. While part of the explanation for this concerns the association of folklore studies with nationalist and regionalist movements and with the Vichy régime (1940-1944), this article argues that the folklorists themselves, men like Félix Arnaudin (1844-1921) are partly to blame. Although Félix was an assiduous and careful ethnographer, he was largely typical of the French folklorists in eschewing theory and lacking respect for the practitioners of folk traditions. Rather than a coherent methodology, Félix pursued a chimera of exhaustivity which was undermined by his own inexplicit exclusions. While it would be unfair to say that there is no interest in folklore in France, its horizons have been seriously curtailed by the shortcomings of Félix’s generation.

The author poses questions concerning the identity of Belarussian Kolkhoz members formed by themselves and shows that it is based on clear contrasts: peasant / landlord, Christian / Jew, believing / unbelieving. These contrasts are rooted in the past but the author shows that the contemporary Belorussian country is immersed in the past and earlier social order is still present in people’s minds despite political and economic changes.

The paper presents the outlines of integral personalism by W. Granat, Polish theologist and a late Rector of The John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin. Granat believed that the human being can be described adequate only in personalism, because only personalism indicates the person as a starting point of meaning the whole world. He connected the knowledge of man not only from theology but also from philosophy, sociology, psychology and medicine. In that way he built integral definition of human person. According to him the human being consists of three dimensions: psychological level, moral level and social level. This paper is composed of three parts, in which the author has taken into consideration the issue of methodology, philosophical anthropology and theological anthropology by W. Granat.

Since 2006, the U.S. Department of Defense have begun employing social scientists in combat brigades in Iraq and Afghanistan. The U.S. Army and CIA officially decided to mobilize anthropologists to the project of the Human Terrain System for the counterinsurgency war. This decision provoked enormous critique of the project within the anthropological community. The intense discussion about turning anthropology into a military tool also provoked wider public debate about ethics and current role of anthropology. Moreover, the uknown history of anthropology and the role of anthropologists during the past wars has been reveled by these discussions. In this paper, I refer to the discussion connected to the anthropologists’ engagement in recent and past wars. The growing interest in history of anthropology shows that more than half of American anthropologists were using their professional skills to advance the war effort during the World War II. I give examples of such involvements, relevant to both World Wars, as well as to the Cold War. I show the ways in which anthropologists were used in military and intelligence operations. I consider how the engagement in those wars changed anthropology itself and its Code of Ethics. I point out ethical and practical implications of engagement, especially for the field relations. Keeping in mind those historical examples of social scientists’ involvment in wars, I firmly state that any application of anthropology in war activities could lead to serious danger for anthropologists and for the discipline itself.
Armia amerykańska i CIA oficjalnie prowadzą rekrutację antropologów w ramach projektu Human Terrain System, którego celem jest walka z lokalną partyzantką. Decyzje te wywołały falę krytyki w środowisku antropologów. Ożywiona dyskusja dotycząca przemiany antropologii w narzędzie prowadzenia wojny stała się pretekstem do publicznej debaty o etyce i współczesnej roli antropologii. W artykule omawiam dyskusję dotyczącą zaangażowania antropologów w wojny toczone obecnie i w przeszłości. Zainteresowanie historią antropologii pozwala twierdzić, że podczas II wojny światowej ponad połowa amerykańskich antropologów wykorzystywała swoje umiejętności zawodowe na rzecz wysiłku wojennego. Przedstawiam przykłady takiego zaangażowania zaczerpnięte z obu wojen światowych, jak i z okresu zimnej wojny. Pokazuję, w jaki sposób antropolodzy byli wykorzystywani podczas operacji wojskowych i wywiadowczych.

The article presents an analysis of ethnographic research data focused on non-professional, common knowledge about transplantation among local inhabitants of a village, and their reflections on the consequences of cell, tissue or organ transplantation. During research I looked at cultural factors that may fuel the fear of such procedures. One of these factors is an ethnotheory of the donor’s personality transfer (or the “psychology” of an individual) resulting from transplanting his/her biological material into the recipent’s body. The aim of the article is to operationalize this concept from an ethnopsychological perspective. The research was carried out with a group of 35 residents of a village located in central Poland, where there is a popular “urban legend” about kidney theft for transplantation that involves the local disco venue. The ethnographic material (interviews with residents) was collected in 2014–2016.

The problem of the body-soul separation has long been the subject of both philosophy and science. There is no doubt that man is a biological being. What is not certain is how human biology influences our actions and decision processes. Does it constitute humanity or is it just an excess. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Arnold Gehlen, who laid the foundations of the institutional theory, stated that man is a being marked by a deficiency. This statement was derived precisely from man’s biological deficiencies. At the same time, those influenced the human’s ability to create complex institutional systems. From the biological foundations of the analysis of man as a psychophysical being, Gehlen derived the need to establish a system of rules and norms that helps us to survive. This article will primarily discuss the biological foundations of Gehlen's theory. It will show how this 20th century anthropologist moved from researching the biological aspects of individuals to the cultural challenges faced by modern humans.

In the history of anthropology, that is, a science whose borders have considerably shifted, the object of study has continually changed but there has been a prevailing conviction about the unusual sensitivity of its practices; however, such sensitivity has not been discussed by researchers in the context of wars, military intelligence, or other military endeavors. When the history of this discipline is recounted as it is by Michał Kowalski in the book Antropolodzy na wojnie [Anthropologists on War], through the prism of the complications involved in direct activities of this type, it forces one to reflect on the ethical principles that should guide field researchers. Historical analyses of such sensitive material should also incline scholars to greater methodological awareness and avoidance of the trap of presentism.

Opis:
„Art disappearance” (2012)2 is a film by Bartosz Konopka and Piotr Rosołowski, qualified by the authors of the document, but not entirely located within the traditionally understood documentary3. „Art disappearance” combines various genres: classic dokument, found footage and mocumentary. The axis, around which the narrative of the film focuses, is in fact a romantic concept of messianism of the Polish nation by Adam Mickiewicz. Less obviously, however, it is inspired by anthropological reflection of Ryszard Kapuscinski. The author analyzed those topics, associations and inspiration appearing in the film which allow the reader to include „Art of disappearing” among the works of the complicated structure of intertextual references.

In the wake of the death of prominent French anthropologist Marc Augé, a participant in his seminars presents his profile and scientific achievements. This unconventional researcher and writer, affiliated with the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in Paris, practiced independent anthropology to understand an era he considered unprecedented, characterized by an excess of space, the acceleration of time and the disappearance of otherness caused by globalization. The thematic scope of his work is very broad: power, witchcraft, rituals, the excesses of modernity, identity, oblivion, etc., as well as gardens, tourism, the bicycle or the Paris metro. In addition to scientific works related to field research and theoretical studies, Augé practiced essayism, which, starting from observational data, led to philosophical considerations. He believed that any ethnology leads to anthropology, which is inherently philosophical.

Opis:
The article refers to the hypotheses concerning the evolution of language presented in an article by Magdalena Danielewiczowa and entitled What is language needed for? What is necessary in language? The hypotheses proposed by Danielewiczowa have far-reaching methodological consequences for cultural studies, especially those that strike a balance between general linguistics, linguistic semantics, anthropological linguistics, and philosophy of language. The organisation of research on cultural phenomena requires methodological planning enabling the minimum conditions of modern research methods to be met. These conditions are: (1) the definition of cognitive goals; (2) the determination of methods for the identification of variables (methodology); (3) research hypotheses formulated in affirmative (not interrogative or negative) sentences; (4) the existence of a relationship between the logical or analytical implications of variables and hypotheses; (5) the negation of hypotheses (counter-argumentation); (6) the substantiation of hypotheses. In this article I develop Danielewiczowa’s remarks on ways of using the term evolution, while also indicating the consequences of disregarding the conditions of correct reasoning within the framework of the research programme called anthropology of the word.

Cognitive science of religion (CSR) is an interdisciplinary research project focusing on the cognitive foundations of religion. The aim of this article is to discuss the specificity of CSR and demonstrate that, although it is part of cognitive science, it can also be seen as an anthropological paradigm in its own right. I argue that such a view can be supported by highlighting the importance of cultural anthropology for the SCR genesis (especially the role of anthropological theories and the resulting research methods, the involvement of anthropologists in the emergence of the new paradigm) and stressing the way in which contemporary anthropology benefits from theories formulated within CSR, the debates they generate and inter-institutional collaborations. Thus, I wish to highlight the dual nature of CSR as part and parcel of both cognitive science and contemporary psychological anthropology.

August 29, 1952, in Maverick Concert Hall, Woodstock: a historic event takes place. The pianist David Tudor closes and opens the piano lid three times, without touching the keyboard itself, during the premiere performance of John Cage’s new composition. This piece, called 4′33″ has been written for a “silent piano.” It is a composition that is NOT to be played! Critics and the audience find he joke poor. Today, depending on the individual point of view, 4′33″ might be interpreted in hundreds of different ways.

In this essay, I present and analyze differences in the perception of the world by two people who are representatives of two different cultures and societies. The first one is the anthro- pologist Fernando Santos-Granero and the second is a man from the Amazonian Yanesha group named Matar. Focusing on the description of a specific event that happened during the ethnographic fieldwork, I deal with the differences in its interpretation. Referring to the interactionist theory of reasoning proposed by Dan Sperber and Hugo Mercier and on Anil Seth’s research on perception, I assume that these differences are the result of each person’s individually shaped perceptions and ways of reasoning. In this paper I seek to explain how perception and reasoning influence the formation of representations that arise in the human mind in relation to cultural as well as environmental phenomena.

The British colonial administrator-ethnographers in India were pioneers who surveyed and carried out expeditions on tribes but often their methods were doubtful. Their survey reports and papers became the source of precious information about such province and at the same time a tool for their continuous development of colonial administration. However by using official machinery and tour for collecting data they bypassed the ethical consideration of research. Their writings in many ways ended up contorting tribes as being synonymous with being backward, uncivilized and barbarous. This study critically analyzes the notion of tribes in India as perceived and studied by anthropologists. It also interrogates the Ontology and Epistemic premises of their Knowledge Production on tribes in India. The paper concludes by discussing the various issues on tribal discourse in India.

The main contradictions, between hypotheses posed by physical anthropologists or geneticists, and the hypotheses put forward by archaeologists or historians, regarding the origin and spread of the Slavs, concerned and still concern the following: (a) the state and biological dynamics of Slavic populations (the capacity for population expansion) , (b) diversity and biological similarity of various groups living in Central Europe at the end of antiquity and in the early Middle Ages, (c) migration movements and their intensity, (d) directions of migration and their importance in the formation of Slavic “ethnos”. On the basis of the results of anthropological research, it can be concluded that: (a) both in the late antiquity period and in the early Middle Ages, the regional diversity of the populations inhabiting the Odra and Vistula basins was maintained, (b) there was a geographical gradient in the variability of morphological features of the skull from west to east of Europe, (c) populations belonging to the Germanic population and populations living in Scandinavia in the Middle Ages clearly differed in terms of morphological features of the skeleton from the population of Western Slavs inhabiting the Odra and Vistula basin. On the other hand, the emergence of a clear geographical gradient in the variability of morphological features of the skeleton, in late antiquity and in the Middle Ages, in Central Europe, allows to conclude that there were no intense migratory movements and the population exchange between late antiquity and the early Middle (d) results of the skeletal morphological features and state and biological dynamics of the population from the Roman period and the Middle Ages indicate a similar level of adaptation of these groups of people to living conditions. This result does not confirm the thesis put forward by some archaeologists and historians that the cultural system of the Slavs was characterized by poverty and a low level of material culture.

The author starts his considerations with a remark on the human person as a unique kind of reality – an embodied being with a Trinitarian structure. He claims that we must account for human nature as it is and educate the human person accordingly. He focuses on six key areas which need further exploration for the renewal of religious education: (1) religious education and the human person, (2) religious education for the body, (3) religious education for the heart, (4) religious education for the mind, (5) religious education and moral formation, and (6) the nature of faith.
