Opis:
Vibrating plates can be used in Active Noise Control (ANC) applications as active barriers or as secondary sources replacing classical loudspeakers. The system with vibrating plates, especially when nonlinear MFC actuators are used, is nonlinear. The nonlinearity in the system reduces performance of classical feedforward ANC with linear control filters systems, because they cannot cope with harmonics generated by the nonlinearity. The performance of the ANC system can be improved by using nonlinear control filters, such as Artificial Neural Networks or Volterra filters. However, when multiple actuators are mounted on a single plate, which is a common practice to provide effective control of more vibration modes, each actuator should be driven by a dedicated nonlinear control filter. This significantly increases computational complexity of the control algorithm, because adaptation of nonlinear control filters is much more computationally demanding than adaptation of linear FIR filters. This paper presents an ANC system with multiple actuators, which are driven with a single nonlinear filter. To avoid destructive interference of vibrations generated by different actuators the control signal is filtered by appropriate separate linear filters. The control system is experimentally verified and obtained results are reported.

Opis:
In the recent years, noise control has become a significant factor in the design of automotive and aircraft industries. In general, methods of the passive noise control are practical and most effective at mid and high frequencies. On the other hand, active noise control techniques are more efficient at the low frequency range. Combined solutions seem to be the most appropriate key to cover the whole frequency range of frequencies. In the present study, a description of simulations for both feedback structural and acoustical structural control strategies are illustrated in order to maximize the damping within an acoustic duct by applying a passive foam layer bonded to an “active” surface.

Opis:
Active Noise Control (ANC) of noise transmitted through a vibrating plate causes many problems not observed in classical ANC using loudspeakers. They are mainly due to vibrations of a not ideally clamped plate and use of nonlinear actuators, like MFC patches. In case of noise transmission though a plate, nonlinerities exist in both primary and secondary paths. Existence of nonlinerities in the system may degrade performance of a linear feedforward control system usually used for ANC. The performance degradation is especially visible for simple deterministic noise, such as tonal noise, where very high reduction is expected. Linear feedforward systems in such cases are unable to cope with higher harmonics generated by the nonlinearities. Moreover, nonlinearities, if not properly tackled with, may cause divergence of an adaptive control system. In this paper a feedforward ANC system reducing sound transmitted through a vibrating plate is presented. The ANC system uses nonlinear control filters to suppress negative effects of nonlinearies in the system. Filtered-error LMS algorithm, found more suitable than usually used Filtered-reference LMS algorithm, is employed for updating parameters of the nonlinear filters. The control system is experimentally verified and obtained results are discussed.

Opis:
The active noise-reducing casing developed and promoted by the authors in recent publications have multiple advantages over other active noise control methods. When compared to classical solutions, it allows for obtaining global reduction of noise generated by a device enclosed in the casing. Moreover, the system does not require loudspeakers, and much smaller actuators attached to the casing walls are used instead. In turn, when compared to passive casings, the walls can be made thinner, lighter and with much better thermal transfer than sound-absorbing materials. For active noise control a feedforward structure is usually used. However, it requires an in-advance reference signal, which can be difficult to be acquired for some applications. Fortunately, usually the dominant noise components are due to rotational operations of the enclosed device parts, and thus they are tonal and multitonal. Therefore, it can be adequately predicted and the Internal Model Control structure can be used to benefit from algorithms well developed for feedforward systems. The authors have already tested that approach for a rigid casing, where interaction of the walls was significantly reduced. In this paper the idea is further explored and applied for a light-weight casing, more frequently met in practice, where each vibrating wall of the casing influences all the other walls. The system is verified in laboratory experiments.

Opis:
Passive noise reduction means are commonly used to reduce noise in the industry but, unfortunately, their effectiveness is poor in the low frequency range. By applying active structural acoustic control to the enclosure walls significant improvement of the insulating properties in this frequency range can be achieved. In this paper a model of double panel structure with ASAC is presented. The structure consists of two aluminium plates separated by an air gap. Two inertial magnetoelectric actuators and two piezoceramic MFC sensors were used for controlling the structure. A multichannel FxLMS algorithm with virtual error microphone technique is used as a control algorithm. The signal of a virtual error microphone is extrapolated basing on signals from MFC sensors. Performance of this actively controlled structure for tonal signals at selected frequencies is presented in the article. During the study, a double panel structure was mounted on one wall of sound insulating enclosure located in an acoustic chamber. During the measurements local and global reduction of noise test signal was investigated.

Opis:
Vibrating plates have been recently used for a number of active noise control applications. They are resistant to difficult environmental conditions including dust, humidity, and even precipitation. However, their properties significantly depend on temperature. The plate temperature changes, caused by ambient temperature changes or plate heating due to internal friction, result in varying response of the plate, and may make it significantly different than response of a fixed model. Such mismatch may deteriorate performance of an active noise control system or even lead to divergence of a model-based adaptation algorithm. In this paper effects of vibrating plate temperature variation on a feedforward adaptive active noise reduction system with the multichannel Filtered-reference LMS algorithm are examined. For that purpose, a thin aluminum plate is excited with multiple Macro-Fiber Composite actuators. The plate temperature is forced by a set of Peltier cells, what allows for both cooling and heating the plate. The noise is generated at one side of the plate, and a major part of it is transmitted through the plate. The goal of the control system is to reduce sound pressure level at a specified area on the other side of the plate. To guarantee successful operation of the control system in face of plate temperature variation, a gain-scheduling scheme is proposed to support the Filteredreference LMS algorithm.

It is possible to enhance acoustic isolation of the device from the environment by appropriately controlling vibration of a device casing. Sound insulation efficiency of this technique for a rigid casing was confirmed by the authors in previous publications. In this paper, a light-weight casing is investigated, where vibrational couplings between walls are much greater due to lack of a rigid frame. A laboratory setup is described in details. The influence of the cross-paths on successful global noise reduction is considered. Multiple vibration actuators are installed on each of the casing walls. An adaptive control strategy based on the Least Mean Square (LMS) algorithm is used to update control filter parameters. Obtained results are reported, discussed, and conclusions for future research are drawn.

Opis:
This work focuses on finding a numerical solution for vehicle acoustic studies and improving the usefulness of the numerical experimental parameters for the development stage of a new automotive project. Specifically, this research addresses the importance of modal cavity damping for vehicle exerts during numerical studies. It then seeks to suggest standardized parameter values of modal cavity damping in vehicular acoustic studies. The standardized value of modal cavity damping is of great importance for the study of vehicular acoustics in the automotive industry because it would allow the industry to begin studies of the acoustic performance of a new vehicle early in the conception phase with a reliable estimation that would be close to the final value measured in the design phase. It is common for the automotive industry to achieve good levels of numerical-experimental correlation in acoustic studies after the prototyping phase because this phase can be studied with feedback from the simulation and experimental modal parameters. Thus, this research suggests values for modal cavity damping, which are divided into two parts due to their behaviour: ξ(x) = −0.0126(x − 100) + 6.15 as a variable function to analyse up to 100 Hz and 6.15% of modal cavity damping constant for studies between 30 Hz and 100 Hz. The sequence of this study shows how we arrived at these values.

The linear 3D piezoelasticity theory along with active damping control (ADC) strategy are applied for non-stationary vibroacoustic response suppression of a doubly fluid-loaded functionally graded piezolaminated (FGPM) composite hollow cylinder of infinite length under general time-varying excitations. The control gain parameters are identified and tuned using Genetic Algorithm (GA) with a multi-objective performance index that constrains the key elasto-acoustic system parameters and control voltage. The uncontrolled and controlled time response histories due to a pair of equal and opposite impulsive external point loads are calculated by means of Durbin’s numerical inverse Laplace transform algorithm. Numerical simulations demonstrate the superior (good) performance of the GA-optimized distributed active damping control system in effective attenuation of sound pressure transients radiated into the internal (external) acoustic space for two basic control configurations. Also, some interesting features of the transient fluid-structure interaction control problem are illustrated via proper 2D time domain images and animations of the 3D sound field. Limiting cases are considered and accuracy of the formulation is established with the aid of a commercial finite element package as well as comparisons with the current literature.

Opis:
Active Noise Control (ANC) systems are usually designed in the feed-forward structure with adaptive linear control filters. However, performance of such systems, when a vibrating plate is used as the secondary source, may be poor due to significant non-linearity of the plate response. The linear systems are then unable to cope with higher harmonics generated by the nonlinearity. One solution to this problem is to apply a nonlinear ANC algorithm. However, it adds additional complexity to this layer. It is particularly severe for multichannel systems, where the algorithms are complex by themselves, and making them nonlinear may significantly reduce their scalability. In this paper, another approach is proposed. Multiple actuators are mounted on a single plate, in order to effectively excite more vibration modes and generate a higher acoustic power, than in case of a single actuator. The response of the vibrating plate as the sound source is then linearized with a set of nonlinear finite impulse response filters, operating individually for each actuator. The Filtered-x LMS algorithm is adopted to update parameters of the nonlinear filters. The control system is experimentally verified and obtained results are reported.
Aby zapewnić efektywne pobudzenie większej liczby mod i uzyskanie większej mocy akustycznej jak w przypadku pojedynczego elementu wzbudzającego, zastosowano wiele elementów wykonawczych wzbudzających drgania. Zaproponowany system sterowania został poddany weryfikacji eksperymentalnej, a uzyskane wyniki zostały zaprezentowane i skomentowane.

Sound insulating enclosures are a basic technical measure commonly used to reduce noise. Insulation of passive sound insulating barriers, however, decreases with a decrease in frequency. Insulation in the low frequency range can be increased by using active noise control methods. This article presents the structure and principle of operation of a double-layered active structure to limit the transmission of noise through barriers. An algorithm, which extrapolates the error microphone signal based on signals from the vibration transducers, is used for structure control. The assessment of the uncertainty of measurement results, an essential problem in environmental acoustic investigations, is undertaken in the paper. An attention is drawn to the – usually omitted – problem of the verification of assumptions related to using the classic methods of the confidence intervals estimation, for the controlled measuring quantity. Especially the paper directs attention to the need of the verification of the assumption of the normal distribution of the measuring quantity set, being the base for the existing and binding procedures of the acoustic measurements assessment uncertainty. The essence of the undertaken problem concerns the binding legal and standard acts related to acoustic measurements and recommended in: ‘Guide to the expression of uncertainty in measurement’ (GUM) (OIML 1993), developed under the aegis of the International Bureau of Measures (BIPM). The model legitimacy of the hypothesis of the normal distribution of the measuring quantity set in acoustic measurements is discussed and supplemented by testing its likelihood on the environment acoustic results. The Jarque-Bery test based on skewness and flattening (curtosis) distribution measures was used for the analysis of results verifying the assumption. This test allows for the simultaneous analysis of the deviation from the normal distribution caused both by its skewness and flattening. The performed experiments concerned analyses of the distribution of sound levels: LD, LE, LN, LDWN, being the basic noise indicators in assessments of the environment acoustic hazards.

Production automation is one of the most essential directions in the development of manufacturing techniques. It becomes prerequisite to use systems for automatic control of tool condition and machining process. Scientific literature contains descriptions of many different sensors, which measure various physical quantities. Moreover, many sophisticated methods for signal processing and analysis were developed. However, only few of them were applied in industrial scale. The purpose of completed tests was to study recording methods for vibration signal, acoustic emission and noise accompanying wood material working. In the scope of these tests, there were efforts made to determine optimal location for sensors fitted on the woodworking machine. Moreover, initial measurement results were analysed in order to find out whether they would be useful to assess tool condition. During operation, construction machines generate high noise levels which can adversely affect the health and the job performance of operators. The noise control techniques currently applied to reduce the noise transmitted into the operator cab are all based on the decrease of the sound pressure level. Merely reducing this noise parameter may be suitable for the compliance with the legislative requirements but, unfortunately, it is not sufficient to improve the subjective human response to noise. The absolute necessity to guarantee comfortable and safe conditions for workers, requires a change of perspective and the identification of different noise control criteria able to combine the reduction of noise levels with that of psychophysical descriptors representing those noise attributes related to the subjective acoustical discomfort. This paper presents the results of a study concerning the “customization” of a methodology based on Sound Quality for the noise control of construction machines. The purpose is to define new hearing-related criteria for the noise control able to guarantee not only reduced noise levels at the operator position but also a reduced annoyance perception.

A graphical method will be presented to determine the real acoustic wave distribution in the flow field. Visualization of research results, which is unavailable by conventional acoustics metrology, may be shown in the form of intensity streamlines in space, as a shape of floating acoustic wave and intensity isosurface in three-dimensional space. In traditional acoustic metrology, the analysis of acoustic fields concerns only the distribution of pressure levels (scalar variable), however in a real acoustic field both the scalar (acoustic pressure) and vector (the acoustic particle velocity) effects are closely related. Only when the acoustic field is described by both the potential and kinetic energies, we may understand the mechanisms of propagation, diffraction and scattering of acoustic waves on obstacles, as a form of energy image. This attribute of intensity method can also validate the results of CFD/CAA numerical modeling which is very important in any industry acoustic investigations.

Opis:
In this investigation, a sound absorbing material is coupled with an active surface to reduce sound pressure within an acoustic duct. In this way, an enhancement of the passive foam performance can be observed because of further acceleration of the fluid particles within the foam pores. The experimental activity implements noise control strategies to increase damping within the cavity through acoustic foam with a flexible backing plate, acted by piezoelectric actuators.
W pracy zbadano skuteczność zastosowania materiału absorbującego dźwięk współpracującego z aktywną powierzchnią przeznaczoną do redukcji ciśnienia akustycznego w dukcie. Zaobserwowano, że takie skojarzenie znacznie poprawia pasywne właściwości samej dźwiękochłonnej pianki wskutek zwiększenia przyspieszeń cząstek płynu zawartego w porach pianki.Wwyniku badań doświadczalnych uzyskano strategie kontroli hałasu zwiększające tłumienie poprzez użycie akustycznej pianki na elastycznej płycie domykającej dukt i sterowanej elementami piezoelektrycznymi.

The present work focuses on the study and analysis of vibrations generated by the electrical motor of a wiper system on its support bracket referring to an hatchback vehicle passenger car. In the electric motor of the wiper system there can be present an imbalance transmitting vibrations to the main body via the support bracket. In this paper, after a short resume of available synchronized switch shunt damping methods, a preliminary experimental evaluation of their potential performance on noise control of the wiper system is reported. After preliminary experimental measurements of dynamic vibration by the use of vibrometer laser both on the real hatchback car then in laboratory environment, a numerical model has been created to evaluate deformations of the support bracket for comparison with the experimental data. This work realizes the preliminary numerical/experimental characterization activity to set up a new application of a control system based on a semi-active technique, called Synchronized Switch Shunt Resonator (SSSR).

Opis:
Water jet milling process is a new emerging technology with many interesting applications. Low cutting forces, no thermal distortion, process flexibility and ability to machine difficult to cut materials make it very attractive for many technological operations. However, its wider application is hindered by lack of proper solutions of process monitoring that would allow accurate control of the material removal process. The research contributions so far focused on use of acoustic emission, thus the purpose of this paper is an evaluation of the proposed strategies and analysis of applicability of acoustic emission for this purpose. An extensive amount of AE data was collected during waterjet machining with various feed rates, abrasive flows, and pump pressures, and analyzed with the aim to determine whether there exists any feature of the AE signal correlated with under- and over abrasion. Monitoring and control of removal rate is possible only if it is possible to discriminate between AE signal samples originating from different states of the abrasive process. In this paper I present results based on extensive one-way ANOVA study of the AE samples, showing, that the standard AE signal features proposed in the literature the energy and statistics of the AE signal do not allow such discrimination, and are not suitable to monitor abnormalities of the abrasive process. The research covers also principle component analysis of the AE signal energy performed in the aim to study if there exists any subset of the energy allowing better discrimination between the investigated process states.

Opis:
Results of epidemiological studies on the association between use of mobile phone and brain cancer are ambiguous, as well as the results of 5 meta-analysis studies published to date. Since the last meta-analysis (2009), new case-control studies have been published, which theoretically could affect the conclusions on this relationship. Therefore, we decided to perform a new meta-analysis. We conducted a systematic review of multiple electronic data bases for relevant publications. The inclusion criteria were: original papers, case-control studies, published till the end of March 2014, measures of association (point estimates as odds ratio and confidence interval of the effect measured), data on individual exposure. Twenty four studies (26 846 cases, 50 013 controls) were included into the meta-analysis. A significantly higher risk of an intracranial tumor (all types) was noted for the period of mobile phone use over 10 years (odds ratio (OR) = 1.324, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.028–1.704), and for the ipsilateral location (OR = 1.249, 95% CI: 1.022–1.526). The results support the hypothesis that long-term use of mobile phone increases risk of intracranial tumors, especially in the case of ipsilateral exposure. Further studies are needed to confirm this relationship. Int J Occup Med Environ Health 2017;30(1):27–43

Opis:
With the growing presence of robots in human populated environments, it becomes necessary to render their presence natural, rather than invasive. To do that, robots need to make sure the acoustic noise induced by their motion does not disturb people nearby. In this line, this paper proposes a method that allows the robot to learn how to control the amount of noise it produces, taking into account the environmental context and the robot’s mechanical characteristics. Concretely, the robot adapts its motion to a speed that allows it to produce less noise than the environment’s background noise and, hence, avoiding to disturb nearby humans. For that, before executing any given task in the environment, the robot learns how much acoustic noise it produces at different speeds in that environment by gathering acoustic informatinon through a microphone. The proposed method was successfully validated on various environments with various background noises. In addition, a PIR sensor was installed on the robot in order to test the robot’s ability to trigger the noise-aware speed control procedure when a person enters the sensor’s field of view. The use of a such a simple sensor aims at demonstrating the ability of the proposed system to be deployed in minimalistic robots, such as micro unmanned aerial vehicles.

Optimization problem for a structural acoustic model with controls governed by unbounded operators on the state space is considered. This type of controls arises naturally in the context of "smart material technology". The main result of the paper provides an optimal synthesis and solvability of associated nonstandard Riccati equations. It is shown that in spite of the unboundedness of control operators, the resulting gain operators (feedbacks) are bounded on the state space. This allows to provide full solvability of the associated Riccati equations. The proof of the main result is based on exploiting propagation of analyticity from the structural component of the model into an acoustic medium.

Opis:
Production in all industry fields is currently affected by new scientific and technical knowledge and the requirements for its rapid deployment. In many cases, the most modern and highly sophisticated technical systems are applied. Simultaneously, fully automated production systems are rather successfully used and progressive production technologies are implemented. In most cases, there is an integral part of a management system that operates the challenging technological processes. These processes would not be executable without the system's precise control, which provides a suitable precondition for ensuring the high quality of manufactured products. However, the customer's demanding requirements are not always met. These involve increased requests for the quality of the final product due to the reduction of the tolerance band and application of high-strength materials. This paper aims to describe one of the solutions by which it is possible to achieve a higher quality of the machined surface after wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM). The solution proposes that through dynamic management, the WEDM process eliminates the vibrations of the wire tool electrode and thereby achieves a substantial increase in the quality of the eroded area in terms of its geometric accuracy. With the support of an extensive database of information with precise exchange of information, the proposed system will allow to control the electro discharge process with regard to the optimal way of operation of the electro discharge machine on the basis of individually selected conditions.

Opis:
Wellposedness of differential and algebraic Riccati equations for control systems with unbounded control operators is considered. It is shown that the full-classical Riccati theory is recovered for a class of dynamics, whose generators are partially analytic. Partial analyticity is quantitatively expressed by the validity of the so-called "singular estimates", which is imposed on the composition operator E[sup At]B (A is the generator, B is unbounded control operator. This class comprises the PDE coupled systems with hyperbolic and parabolic components. Two illustrative examples are given in the paper: boumdary/point control of thermal plates with hyperbolic character and point control of structural acoustic interactions. The latter are described by wave equation coupled at an interface to a plate equation.

In the paper, the results of tests and calculations are presented for acoustic road barrier treated as a plane vibrating surface source emitting acoustic waves. The tests were realized with the use of scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometer (LDV) which enables remote registration and the spectral analysis of vibrations for the points of the square lattice chosen on the tested surface. For comparison obtained data were also analyzed with the LMS Test.Lab software for modal analysis ([1, 2, 3, 9]). The acoustic barrier at S1 road in Sosnowiec was chosen for the in situ tests (Fig. 1). The general view of tested acoustic road barrier spot and measurement configuration is presented in the Figs 2 – 6. For the first time, the comparison was made of data analysis results obtained for acoustic barrier vibrations identified with the use of laser vibrometer PSV-400 internal tools and the ones calculated with the use of LMS Test.Lab software. The results were presented in Tab. 1, Fig. 7 and Fig. 11. In Tab. 2, Tab. 3, Tab.4 and Figs. 8 – 10, MAC coefficients (Modal Assurance Criterion, [4, 5, 6]) and identi-fied vibration modes were presented. The final method being still developed may find use in wide range of applications, e.g. for sound transmission analysis ([7], [8]) of plane acoustic road barriers for different vibration modes.
