Celem tekstu jest pokazanie wkładu Floriana Znanieckiego w zgłębianie wiedzy naukowej. Uczony poświęcił wiele miejsca na roztrząsanie licznych aspektów z tą wiedzą związanych. Nie były one jednak przez niego opracowane i przedstawione w zwartej formie, ani realizowane zgodnie z konkretnym programem badawczym. Rozproszone są po wielu publikacjach, pisanych w różnym czasie i podejmowanych z różnych pobudek. Należało je wydobyć z jego bogatej twórczości i przedłożyć w miarę spójnej postaci. Do tego posłużył schemat zaczerpnięty z propozycji Marii i Stanisława Ossowskich, mający w zamyśle autorów spinać wątki, którymi miałaby się zająć nauka o nauce. Po lekkiej modyfikacji składa się z następujących działów: rozważania nad socjologią wiedzy naukowej ściśle powiązane z filozofią nauki, socjologiczna nauka o wiedzy jako jednym z wielu działów kultury, wiedza naukowa w kontekście życia zbiorowego, zagadnienia o charakterze instytucjonalno-organizacyjnym związane z wiedzą naukową, historyczne analizy odnoszące się do wiedzy naukowej.
The aim of the text is to show Florian Znaniecki’s contribution to the exploration of scientific knowledge. The scientist devoted a lot of space to dissecting numerous aspects related to this knowledge. However, these were not elaborated and presented by him in a compact form, nor were they pursued according to a specific research programme. They are scattered over many publications, written at different times and undertaken for different motives. It was necessary to extract them from his rich oeuvre and submit them in a reasonably coherent form. This was done using a scheme drawn from a proposal by Maria and Stanisław Ossowski, intended by the authors to tie together the threads that would be dealt with in the science of science. After slight modification, it consists of the following sections: reflections on the sociology of scientific knowledge closely linked to the philosophy of science, sociological science of knowledge as one of many branches of culture, scientific knowledge in the context of collective life, issues of an institutional and organisational nature related to scientific knowledge, historical analyses relating to scientific knowledge.

This article presents the results of research into the sense of connection felt by the inhabitants of the Abisynia housing estate in Poznań for their place of residence. In the interwar period, Abisynia represented a typical affluent suburb of a large city. Today it is surrounded by apartment buildings. The research was conducted using a modification of Florian Znaniecki’s methodology, which was first applied in 1928. The methodology and results are presented in comparison with Znaniecki’s classical research. New methodological elements were employed, and the text indicates how they affected interpretation of the social processes taking place in a contemporary city. The inhabitants of Abisynia exhibited a very positive self-stereotype in their nearly enthusiastic appraisal of themselves and their neighbors. They were less tolerant of other city dwellers and of the city authorities. The contemporary inhabitants of Abisynia believe themselves to be a part of a more local social organization, of a type promoted by Znaniecki nearly one hundred years ago.

It is undoubtable that the immigration to the US is largely due to the steady ow of fresh minds and a new spirit that inuences the development of the American society. These new forces help protect the American society from the stagnation experienced in the Old World. The importance of immigrant experiences puts the United States on the brink of a very dicult, but often successful combination of the new and the old. Beyond question, this is true, especially regarding twentieth-century emigrants such as Eva Homan or the family of Alfred Kazin. Although Vladimir Nabokov having been himself an exception, not easy to categorize as writer, in his life as an ØmigrØ in the USA, he could also prove that the absorption of the American culture and language to a large extent took place, and was fruitful. For much of the twentieth century, the immigrant osmosis of the New World was associated with assimilation to the highly desirable, largely monolithic, English culture of the East Coast.

The author presents the pedagogical strategy of F. Znaniecki, discovered by himself, which ramains important for intercultural pedagogy, and which was expressed by the philosophically thinking sociologist only in 1929. It is a controversial pedagogical idea, treated as a condition for overcoming intercultural antagonisms in the mode of a new quality of support for subjective development of children and different than usual in upbringing. This is connected with the simultaneous indication of the importance of educationally critical attitude towards the cultural condition of adults, which requires correction by wise people. The text uses new readings of the writings of the classic sociology, although read differently than shown by its common philosophical, pedagogical and sociological interpretations. This thread is more fully discussed and documented in the author’s book, entitled “Claims and transactuality in the humanities. Florian Znaniecki: the legacy of ideas and its cracks”. Znaniecki’s key pedagogical postulate, important interculturally, is the suggestion of the need to move from raising children in the mode of intra-group socialization to supporting their self-education open to recognizing their own passions, to cultural diversity and stimulating the ability to use the encounter with otherness, in recognition of the naturalness of diversity, in recognition of the naturalness of differentiation, albeit without antagonisms. At the same time, education (bringing-up) in this approach is paradoxically to concern mainly adults, with the correction of their claims, including against the absolutization of their own aggressive prejudices, taken over under the influence of socialization dichotomizations. An attempt is made to evaluate the intercultural pedagogical strategy outlined in this way, which from the very beginning has not met with the sufficient recognition of pedagogy, nor has it been properly evaluated. Znaniecki’s strategy is confronted mainly with the approach of R. Rorty, J. Habermas, as well as M. Buber, H. Gadamer, A. Maslow and M. Kundera. The author points to the traces of the legitimacy of inscribed the attitude of T. Lewowicki in the not sufficiently well recognized aspirations of F. Znaniecki himself, following the reflections in the Jubilee Book dedicated to the former for his 80th anniversary.
Autor przybliża rozpoznaną przez siebie strategię pedagogiczną F. Znanieckiego, ważną dla pedagogiki międzykulturowej, wysłowioną przez filozoficznie myślącego socjologa dopiero w roku 1929. Chodzi o kontrowersyjną ideę pedagogiczną, traktowaną jako warunek przezwyciężania antagonizmów międzykulturowych w trybie nowej jakości wspomagania podmiotowego rozwoju dzieci i innego niż zwykle w wychowaniu. Wiąże się to z jednoczesnym wskazaniem na wagę krytycznego wychowawczo odnoszenia się kondycji kulturowej ludzi dorosłych, wymagającej naprawiania przez ludzi mądrych. W tekście wykorzystano nowe lektury pism klasyka socjologii, choć inaczej czytanego, niż to ukazują jego obiegowe wykładnie filozoficzne, pedagogiczne i socjologiczne. Pełniej wątek ten jest omawiany i udokumentowany w książce autora pt. Uroszczenia i transaktualność w humanistyce. Florian Znaniecki: dziedzictwo idei i jego pęknięcia (2022, Kraków: Impuls). Kluczowym pedagogicznie postulatem Znanieckiego – ważnym międzykulturowo – jest sugestia konieczności przejścia od wychowania dzieci w trybie socjalizacji wewnątrzgrupowej do wspomagania ich samokształcenia otwartego na rozpoznawanie własnych pasji, na różnorodność kulturową i stymulującego zdolność do korzystania ze spotkania z innością, w uznaniu naturalności zróżnicowania, choć bez antagonizmów. Zarazem wychowanie ma w tym podejściu paradoksalnie dotyczyć głównie ludzi dorosłych, z korektą ich uroszczeń, w tym przeciw absolutyzacji ich własnych agresywnych przesądzeń, przejmowanych pod wpływem socjalizacyjnych dychotomizacji. Zostaje podjęta próba oceny tak zarysowanej międzykulturowej strategii pedagogicznej, która od samego początku nie spotkała się z uznaniem pedagogów, ani nie doczekała się należytej oceny. Strategia Znanieckiego zostaje zderzona głównie z podejściem R. Rorty’ego, J. Habermasa, a także M. Bubera, H. Gadamera, A. Maslowa oraz M. Kundery. Autor wskazuje na tropy zasadności wpisywania postawy T. Lewowickiego w nie dość dobrze rozpoznane dążenia samego F. Znanieckiego, w ślad za rozważaniami w Księdze Jubileuszowej dedykowanej temu pierwszemu na jego 80-lecie.

Artykuł jest analizą koncepcji czynności ludzkich dwóch wielkich polskich myślicieli – Kazimierza Twardowskiego i Floriana Znanieckiego. Tekst ma charakter analityczno-syntetyczny z pogranicza historii idei i metodologii. Głównym problemem artykułu jest ukazanie, jakie podejście badawcze w naukach społecznych wynika z koncepcji czynności ludzkich Twardowskiego i Znanieckiego. Prezentują oni odmienne sposoby konceptualizacji czynności ludzkich, które uzupełniają się logicznie i wyznaczają dopełniające się obszary opisu zachowań człowieka. Twardowski dąży do obiektywnego opisu czynności ludzkich jako sytuacji logiczno-semiotycznych zawartych w wytworach człowieka. Taka perspektywa oglądu daje podstawy naukowego ich traktowania, różnego od odkrywania ukrytych, deterministycznych zależności przyczynowo-skutkowych, właściwych dla zjawisk przyrodniczych. W podejściu Znanieckiego czynności traktowane są jako tworzywo kultury, czyli ładu stosunków pomiędzy wszystkimi uzewnętrznianymi ludzkimi doświadczeniami. Stanowi to podstawę humanistycznego rozumienia ludzkich zachowań, które upodobnia się do przyczynowo-skutkowego myślenia w naukach przyrodniczych.
The article is an analysis of the concept of human activities of two great Polish thinkers − Kazimierz Twardowski and Florian Znaniecki. The text is analytical and synthetic in nature, bordering on the history of ideas and methodology. The main problem of the article is to show what research approach in humanities results from the concept of human activities by Twardowski and Znaniecki. They present different ways of conceptualizing human activities, which complement each other logically and define complementary areas of description of human behavior. Twardowski strives to objectively describe human activities as logical and semiotic situations contained in human products. Such a perspective provides the basis for a scientific treatment of them, different from discovering hidden deterministic cause-and-effect relationships specific to natural phenomena. In Znanieckiʼs approach, activities are treated as a material of culture, i.e. an order of relations between all externalized human experiences. This is the basis of a humanistic understanding of human behavior that conforms to cause and effect thinking in the natural sciences.

Opis:
Certain visionary threads of Florian Znaniecki’s thought present in his sociological theory of education merit our attention. They are associated with the concept of creating a grassroots movement of new sociality, capable of becoming a vehicle of reflexive social and cultural changes. These utopian threads related to the current of new humanism appear in all of Znaniecki’s works. The problem of altruism seems crucial in the light of Znaniecki’s axiology, but has not been properly examined until now. When Znaniecki names the new social tasks of education with the goal of shaping social changes, he considers the problem of social good from the perspective of intergroup relations. He searches for a new meaning of altruism, especially collective altruism, which would be the antithesis of collective egoism, and thus would transcend the limits of solidarity only with one’s own group. The issue of altruism, so important for Znaniecki, has only recently begun to regain its place in sociology. Znaniecki’s thought can be read in a connection with the contemporary anti-utilitarian movement and the newly revived discussion about the possibility of humanism after modernity.

The aim of this paper is to present the cultural psychology project formulated by Florian Znaniecki. In the first part of the article, the authoress reconstructs the origin of this concept by reviewing the scholar’s early philosophical writings. In the second and third part of this paper, the authoress focuses on presenting the basic categories of Znaniecki’s theory such as culture, culturalism and cultural action and highlights the role of cultural psychology in his scientific system.

Celem artykułu jest eksploracyjna analiza upamiętnień Floriana Znanieckiego obecnych w przestrzeni publicznej. Florian Znaniecki to twórca instytucjonalnej socjologii polskiej i jeden z przedstawicieli tzw. socjologii humanistycznej. Tekst przedstawia dokonania Znanieckiego, opisuje jego upamiętnienia w Warszawie, Poznaniu i Świątnikach oraz historię ich ustanowienia, a następnie analizuje te upamiętnienia przez pryzmat ich wpływu na pamięć społeczną. W badaniach posłużono się metodą analizy dokumentów. Badania umożliwiły wskazanie podstawowych uzasadnień stosowanych w upamiętnieniach Znanieckiego. Są to: działalność organizacyjna, działalność edukacyjna (w tym wychowawcza), międzynarodowe uznanie, związek z regionem lub miejscowością, dokonania metodologiczne, rola w nauce, pionierstwo naukowe, różnorodność dokonań naukowych.
The aim of the article is to conduct an exploratory analysis of commemorations of Florian Znaniecki in public spaces. Florian Znaniecki was one of the founders of Polish institutional sociology and one of the representatives of humanistic sociology. The text briefly presents Znaniecki’s achievements, describes his commemorations in Warsaw, Poznań, and Świątniki, as well as the history of their establishment, and then analyses these commemorations from the perspective of their impact on social memory. The research was conducted using document analysis. The research identified basic justifications used in Znaniecki’s commemorations. These are: his organizational activity, educational activity, international recognition, connection with a region or place, methodological achievements, role in science, scientific pioneering, and the diversity of his scientific achievements.

The aim of this article is to recall the theory of the sociology of education created almost a century ago by the classic of Polish sociology, Florian Znaniecki, in order to show the topicality of his concept in the face of the symptoms of the crisis of the educational system. The article presents the biographical context and scientific achievements of the creator of the sociology of education. The relations between the disciplines of educational sociology, general sociology and pedagogy were explained. The goals and components of the upbringing process and the system of sociology of upbringing by Florian Znaniecki were outlined. Attention was also paid to the educational environment defined by Florian Znaniecki and the upbringing process was characterized as a preparation for fulfilling the social roles. The theses postulated by the creator of the sociology of education were related to the contemporary educational environment.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to apply the concept of the humanistic coefficient of Florian Znaniecki to the analysis of a specific legal and social situation that enabled the legal consumption of alcohol in the Warta areas in Poznan. They have gained a high spatial value, and this is not due to intentional investments or architectural changes, but thanks to the presence of people who create various types of social systems. Znaniecki’s humanistic coefficient turns out to be not only an important theoretical concept, but also a useful, still valid tool in empirical analysis. It brings a large dose of practical knowledge for different types of decision makers (re)organizing urban areas. The spatial value does not have to be directly proportional to the size of financial outlays.

Opis:
This article discusses the theoretical foundations of developed theories and their impact on the lives of older people. In this context, it is particularly important to bring closer the sociological concepts of upbringing according to Florian Znaniecki, as well as the process of transmitting norms and values. According to Znaniecki’s thesis it is the elderly, through the experience and skills acquired in the course of life, who are able to adequately convey the necessary values and norms. Possessed skills, life competences and cultural resources make that the elderly become a life guide for the younger generation, so to speak, social leaders who are able to influence their pupils. Znaniecki’s concepts and theories contributed to the development of sociology. According to the researcher, upbringing, which takes into account both the roles and the importance of the elderly and their axiological messages, is aimed primarily at the proper shaping of the young individual so that he/she is able to independently perform the social tasks entrusted to him/her in the future.

The article presents the first part of the correspondence of Eileen and Florian Znaniecki, which is located in the Archives of the Kosciuszko Foundation in New York. It shows many unknown threads from the life of Znaniecki family, especially Florian – one of the most outstanding Polish sociologist, a professor at the University of Poznań, who worked for many years in the United States of America.The presented edition includes letters with Stefan Piotr Mierzwa, who used the name Stephen Peter Mizwa in English, and Edith Brahmall Cullis-Williams.Mierzwa was the founder of the Kościuszko Foundation, a long-term executive director of the foundation, and finally its president. Thanks to his activities for the cultural and scientific rapprochement between Poland and America, he became, if not one of the most important figures in the life of American Polonia in the twentieth century, so certainly among the New York State Poles.Cullis-Williams was the founder and president of the Polish Institute of Arts and Literature in New York City and a well known American polonophile in the American environment.The archives of the Kościuszko Foundation have survived copies of Mierza’s letters written to Znaniecki.Copies of Cullis-Williams letters have not been preserved in this collection, but even those sent to her by Eileen, presented in this edition, perfectly complement the picture of American relationships and social relations of the Znaniecki marriage emerging from other sources.Chronologically, the letters cover the period 1923–1940 and show the beginnings of Znaniecki's cooperation with the Kosciuszko Foundation. What is more, the collection brings a little new light to Znaniecki’s presence in New York in 1931–1933 and the first months of the Poznań sociologist’s stay in the United States of America in 1940.
Artykuł przedstawia część pierwszą korespondencji Eileen i Floriana Znanieckich, znajdującej się w Archiwum Fundacji Kościuszkowskiej w Nowym Jorku. Pokazuje ona wiele nieznanych wątków z życia Znanieckich, a zwłaszcza Floriana – jednego z najsłynniejszych polskich socjologów, profesora Uniwersytetu Poznańskiego, który wiele lat pracował w Stanach Zjednoczonych Ameryki.Prezentowana edycja obejmuje listy ze Stefanem Piotrem Mierzwą, który w języku angielskim używał nazwiska Stephen Peter Mizwa, oraz z Edith Brahmall Cullis-Williams.Mierzwa był założycielem Fundacji Kościuszkowskiej, długoletnim dyrektorem wykonawczym fundacji, a w końcu jej prezesem. Dzięki swojej działalności na rzecz kulturalnego i naukowego zbliżenia Polski i Ameryki stał się jedną z najbardziej rozpoznawalnych postaci w życiu Polonii amerykańskiej w XX w.Cullis-Williams była założycielką i prezeską Polskiego Instytutu Sztuk Pięknych i Literatury w Nowym Jorku i znaną w środowisku amerykańskim polonofilką.W zasobach archiwalnych Fundacji Kościuszkowskiej przetrwały kopie listów Mierzwy pisanych do Znanieckich.Kopie listów Cullis-Williams nie zachowały się w tej kolekcji, ale choćby te, wysłane do niej przez Eileen, prezentowane w niniejszej edycji, doskonale uzupełniają obraz amerykańskich relacji i powiązań towarzyskich małżeństwa Znanieckich, jakie wyłania się z innych źródeł.Chronologicznie listy obejmują okres 1923–1940 i pokazują początki współpracy Znanieckiego z Fundacją Kościuszkowską, wnoszą trochę nowego światła do obecności Znanieckiego w Nowym Jorku w latach 1931–1933 oraz do pierwszych miesięcy pobytu poznańskiego socjologa w Stanach Zjednoczonych Ameryki w 1940 r.
