PUBLIC LIBRARY IN WARSAW
WARSAW
Opis:
The historical building in 26 Koszykowa Street is the seat of a Public Library established almost a hundred years ago for the capital city of Warsaw. In 2007 this institution will be celebrating its round anniversary. Created in 1907 thanks to the initiative of the Public Library Society, it has been almost uninterruptedly gathering and rendering available scientific collections and the belles lettres. From 1914 it is housed in an object erected due to the funds and efforts of Eugenia Kierbedz, born Kierbedz, the daughter of Stanislaw, an outstanding communications engineer and the author of the first permanent bridge across the Vistula in Warsaw. The Library was designed by acclaimed architects: Jan Heurich Junior and his collaborators - Wladyslaw Marconi and Artur Gurney. The building is composed of the two-storey main part which occupies the whole width of the front of the lot, and a single-storey outbuilding in the back, connected by means of a narrow and also one-story passage, perpendicular to the north-south axis. The most representative is the front fragment and the passage built on a ground plan similar to the letter T, which originally served predominantly library purposes. It still houses the large reading room featuring lavish architectural outfitting, harmoniously corresponding to the monumental facade which refers to the principles of Classical architecture. The outbuilding adjoining the passage and granted two wings of different width and height (on the ground plan of the letter L) formerly contained book storerooms, which burnt down during the second world war. Almost from its very outset the Library has been forced to tackle assorted problems involving available space. Successive postwar transformations (such as the erection of a new reading rooms building on the spot of a non-extant house in 28 Koszykowa Street) managed to meet the constantly growing needs of this institution for only a brief space of time. This is the reason why despite numerous failures, up to this day the Library has not resigned from efforts to expand and modernise its facilities. The results of a competition organised by SARP have been announced in December 2005. First prize for a conception of enlarging the Library went to the Bulanda, Mucha Architekci Sp. z o.o. studio. The adaptation of the Library buildings complex will be carried out in stages, and its completion is foreseen for 2007. Will it be conducted with due respect for the historical substance, or shall it assume the form of a successful integration of the new with the old; finally, will it add splendour to the anniversary of the hundred-years old institution? We still do not know the answer.

WARSAW POLYTECHNIC
Opis:
The Warsaw Circle of Architects, established in 1904 and active at the Associations of Technicians, dealt with professional questions, architectural competitions and the socio-spatial problems of the city. It also discussed the training of future representatives of the profession in Warsaw since many architects from the Kingdom of Poland had studied abroad. Members of the Circle aimed at creating an independent Department of Architecture within the Warsaw Polytechnic. In February 1915 their efforts resulted in setting up an organizational committee. The architects who joined the committee devised a detailed programme of the Department and became members of its academic staff. The Department of Architecture was opened on 15 November 1915. It had not been granted space in the Polytechnic building, and was forced to inaugurate its courses at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts in the Powisle district. Information about the choice of this site is contained in a letter of 20 August 1912, addressed to Eugenia Kierbedziowa, the founder of the building. The correspondence is preserved in the collections of the Public Library of the capital city of Warsaw amongst material comprising her legacy. The content of the letter shows that Eugenia Kierbedziowa agreed to the proposal, which also reflected the stand of some of the Circle members who envisaged architectural training combined with the fine arts. The Department of Architecture was located in the Powisle district only for a year, up to the autumn of 1916. From that time on, it remains in a building in 55 Koszykowa Street.

Opis:
Muranów, or about land clearing The article is a review of “Festung Warschau” by Elżbieta Janicka which maps the clash between the recently built monuments celebrating Jewish or Polish places of martyrdom from the times of Second World War. Janicka walks through the streets of the former Jewish neighbourhoods of Warsaw; she photographs and discusses the new plaques, crosses, monuments, and other forms of public marking of history on the buildings, squares and streets. She convincingly shows that the new historical commemorative signs of Polish martyrdom are often placed in the sites that were marked by Jewish resistance or suffering, and that the marks of Polish suffering are rarely linked materially to the site. The new monuments obstruct and hide the past presence of Warsaw Jews and, by submerging their past, create a new vision of ethnically cleansed history of Warsaw, especially in its relation to Second World War. The review applauds the book and rejects some of the criticism against it.

Opis:
Artykuł zawiera opatrzoną wstępem i komentarzami edycję dwunastu listów Emila Młynarskiego pisanych do żony Anny  w Lozannie w okresie 1905–06. Tęsknota do niej walczy o lepsze z myślami  o powrocie do zawodu.
The article is an edition (with introduction and commentaries) of Emil Młynarski’s twelve letters to his wife Anna, who in 1905–1906 resided in Lausanne. At that time, Młynarski took his wife and four (still small) children away from the revolution-ridden Warsaw to the safety of Switzerland. He remained in the city, but visited his family at times. He was not present at the birth of his youngest daughter Anna (in the night of 31 December 1905 / 1 January 1906). ‘[She is] a Swiss, so a citizen of a free country’, he wrote in one of the letters, ‘unlike us, who remain perpetually under the [Russian] knout’. He could write openly, since he sent those letters courtesy of private travellers (the Warsaw post was then on strike). The letters bear valuable testimony to Młynarski’s political attitudes, and retain the value of free sincere statements, not subjected to self-censorship. They also happen to be the only part of his correspondence (scattered throughout the world) that is known to researchers today. They are a document of a time of crisis in his professional work, accompanied by financial problems, resulting from the fact that from the moment he hadbroken his ties with Warsaw Philharmonic (in April 1905), which he had headed, his only employment was now in Warsaw Music Institute. Despite holding the post of the Institute’s director, he still felt frustrated in his personal ambitions as a talented conductor. The letters also present Młynarski as a caring husband and lover, genuinely in love with his wife, torn between missing her and hopes for a return to his profession. Nevertheless, even his connections and contacts at the governor-general’s office did not restore to him either a place at Warsaw Opera, where he wished to return, or in the city’s music life in general. His conflict with Aleksander Rajchman, the Philharmonic’s administrative director, which was the reason for Młynarski leaving the conductor’s pulpit – continued. Młynarski hated his opponent, but did not see him in ethnic categories as a Jew, which was very rare in those times, when anti-Semitism was virtually the norm. My edition has been supplemented with an afterword concerning the dramatic fates of Młynarski’s family during WWII, when one of Anna Młynarska’s sisters, Henryka, was deported with her three children to Siberia as ‘a socially alien element’, as also were two children of another sister, Wanda. Anna herself avoided the deportation most likely by hiding in a little cabin in the orchard. Her son Bronisław, found himself in Soviet POW camps after the invasion of 17 September 1939, and was one of the small group of (395) Polish army officers who survived the Katyn massacre – as one of those whose release from the camp was due to the efforts of the German embassy. I believe that those efforts may have been inspired by Richard Strauss, the first head of the Reichsmusikkammer, who had been a close acquaintance of Bronisław’s father, Emil Młynarski.

Opis:
The article was written on the basis of the so-called Warsaw-Kholm archives of Ivan Ohiienko – a well-known Ukrainian statesman, religious figure, and scientist, professor at the University of Warsaw in 1925–1932 – which were found in the archive of Polish Institute of National Remembrance in Warsaw and studied by the author. The documents were still considered lost during the Warsaw Uprising of 1944. The reasons for dispersing and the ways of moving this archive collection are clarified, the facts about the preservation of a part of the documents and the way they got after the war to the archive of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Poland, and later to the archive of Polish Institute of National Remembrance in Warsaw, are presented here for the first time. The characteristics of the archive are presented in terms of the volumes, personalities, and public institutions with which the creator of the archive corresponded. The multifaceted issues of the correspondence are considered against the background of the philosophy of being an individual in the context of emigration. The activities of Ohiienko in the complex reality of emigration are analysed in several aspects: the struggle for physical survival, civil and professional assertion, and the thirst for fulfilment of his duties before he was forced to abandon the Motherland because of political reasons. The conclusions emphasise the need to resolve the issue regarding the copying of the discovered archival documents at the intergovernmental level, scientific study of them, and their first publication in Ukraine.

Wall and window: the rubble of the Warsaw Ghetto as the narrative space of the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish JewsOpened in 2013, the Warsaw-based POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews is situated in the center of the former Nazi Warsaw ghetto, which was destroyed during its liquidation in 1943. The museum is also located opposite to the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes and Martyrs, built in 1948, as well as in between of the area of the former 19th-century Jewish district, and of the post-war modernist residential district of Muranów, designed as a district-memorial of the destroyed ghetto. Constructed on such site, the Museum was however narrated as a “museum of life”, telling the “thousand-year old history” of Polish Jews, and not focused directly on the history of the Holocaust or the history of Polish antisemitism. The paper offers a critical analysis of the curatorial and architectural strategies assumed by the Museum’s designers in the process of employing the urban location of the Museum in the narratives communicated by the building and its main exhibition. In this analysis, two key architectural interiors are examined in detail in terms of their correspondence with the context of the site: the Museum’s entrance lobby and the space of the “Jewish street,” incorporated into the main exhibition’s sub-galleries presenting the interwar period of Polish-Jewish history and the history of the Holocaust. The analysis of the design structure of these two interiors allows to raise a research question about physical and symbolic role of the material substance of the destroyed ghetto in construction of a historical narrative that is separated from the history of the destruction, as well as one about the designers’ responsibilities arising from the decision to present a given history on the physical site where it took place.Mur i okno.

The creative sector has become an important source used to create competitive advantages of the cities. The importance of creative industries in urban development was spotted more than a decade ago. Creative capital is perceived as an impulse and engine of urban changes, a source of new advantages and attractions. Some point out that it mainly develops in big cities, where the authorities deliberately implement measures aimed at supporting and attracting creative entities. The purpose of this study is to present the condition of the creative sector in Warsaw and the way its functioning is perceived by its representatives. It also discusses the support of city authorities for the development of the creative sector.

Opis:
The article deals with the question of the existence of the Jewish community and the barriers between Jews and non-Jews in the Old Warsaw from the 1420s to the 1520s. The contact points and areas of the two communities, as well as the tools used to communicate between them, are distinguished. Firstly, Jewish property in the space of Old Warsaw, as well as neighbouring and economic contacts, are noticed. Then, the presence of Jews both from Warsaw and other towns and regions in court sessions is analysed. Local and Lithuanian or Volhynian Jews appeared in the Old Warsaw town hall. However, the most important place for official meetings of Warsaw Jews with the Christian community was the court for nobles. It is visible that the first half of the fifteenth century was a unique period with a far-reaching agreement between the Christian inhabitants of Warsaw and its surroundings and the members of the local Jewish community. Within the linguistic area, the communication tools were Polish and German, while Latin, possibly familiar to some Jews, was not a significant communication barrier. Hebrew had its position in the bureaucratic system as well. The protection of the local duke secured a relatively harmonious economic cooperation, which was fostered by the then economic situation of Mazovia. The mid-fifteenth century brought a violent turn, which was influenced by the changes in the political and economic situation, as well as the religious atmosphere. Warsaw burghers started to perceive the Jews as competition, as ‘others’, and began to approach them with growing hostility.

Opis:
A radical reconstruction of the exposition layout at the Museum of the City of Warsaw, connected with the general reconstruction of the facilities and retirement of its longtime director, Janusz Durko (1951-2003), resulted in 2017 in opening a new permanent exposition called Things from Warsaw. The exposition consists of 21 cabinets containing 8 000 items selected out of 300 000 included in the museum holdings (e. g., Cabinet of Warsaw Monuments, Cabinet of Warsaw Silver and Plate Tableware, Cabinet of the Warsaw Sirens, Cabinet of Postcards, Cabinet of Souvenirs, Cabinet of Shrines). The main criterion was the materiality and authenticity of particular items, which resulted in the absence of multimedia presentations and suggested “appropriate” narratives. The main curator of the exposition is Jarosław Trybuś, art historian and curator rewarded with the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2008. His team followed an idea of Bjørnar Olsen that due to various conceptualizations the material world studied by the humanities has been so dematerialized that we can hardly believe our eyes. Thus the features of the exposition – sincerity, seriousness, and modesty – suggest a new approach to the city’s history through experiencing the reality of things treated not so much as “witnesses,” but rather as “actors” of the past events. This turn to materiality stems from the hope to come close to the things without the mediation of words imposing predictable interpretations in advance. In other words, the exposition is a kind of lesson in openness, multidirectional reading, and the de-ideologization of history. The Things from Warsawexhibition has been analyzed in reference to three criteria: openness to the “other,” creating a vision of the future, and the inspiring power of imagination.

Opis:
The Polish version of the article was published in Roczniki Humanistyczne 61 (2013), issue 2. This article is devoted to a presentation of the contents of one of the political sermons preached in Krakow Cathedral on 8th May 1810. A Cathedral Canon, Rev. Augustyn Lipiński delivered it on the feast of St Stanislaus in the presence of King Frederick Augustus I of Saxony and Duke of Warsaw, his court and the dignitaries who accompanied him: the Minister of War, Prince Józef Poniatowski, the Prefect of the Krakow Department, Prince Henryk Lubomirski, and many department and municipal officials. In its content the sermon was devoted to authority and the way to exercise it. It is constructed as a polemic with contemporary currents striving after secularization of the ethos of the official. The preacher expressed his conviction that a virtuous official and a good citizen are ones who regard the good of the country and of their fellow-citizens more highly than their own good or even their lives; they are ready to serve them and the king who is exercising power by the will of Providence, and they never look to their own gain in this service – either material profits or fame.

Opis:
The essay calls for filling a gap in the studies on Warsaw Uprising concerning the place of queer people. A recent play, Snakepit by Joanna Oparek is considered, and the “scandal” surrounding Elżbieta Janicka’s academic work Festung Warschau is analysed, but the main source of understanding non-normative masculinities and sexualities is Miron Białoszewski’s Memoir of the Warsaw Uprising. The author offers a “paranoid” reading of traces, suggestions, allusions, and “illogical” fragments to build a working metaphor of queer acquaintances as an alternative “map” without the map. Finally he invokes the role of the picaresque narrative convention in representing such paranoid queer relationships.

The extension of the second line of the Warsaw Metro (M2), running from east to west, is currently under construction. The opening of sections in the eastern and western parts of the line has been carried out in 4 stages, successively handing over sections of 2−3 stations each. The section currently under construction is the last section of the 2nd line in the south western part, which also includes the construction of the Karolin technical and holding station (STP Karolin). The Varsovia trains delivered by Škoda, whose styling is similar to the Inspiro trains from Siemens, which have been in service on the Warsaw metro for several years, have been acquired for the rolling stock of the line. The construction of the metro was disrupted by the SARS-Cov-2 coronavirus pandemic (2020−2022) as, alongside a delay in the completion date or the delivery of rolling stock, it caused an increase in the price of materials and labor costs, forcing the parties (City Hall of Warsaw, contractors) to revalue the contract.

Opis:
In the article entitled Experience and module in shaping buildings in the Warsaw suburban zone it raised the issue of specific conditions which shaped the conception of city planning foundations in Warsaw. The author stresses that the medieval arrangement of the city did not differ from commonly accepted modules and that such a state lasted and included the 16th century. Only in the next centuries namely in the 1 7th and 18th century did the situation change. The old Warsaw situated behind medieval walls lost its significance and prestige. Relocation of the capital to Warsaw created a new situation for development (mostly town-planning) of the city, exactly, together with the King's residence, splendid residences of nobility, magnates, churches and monasteries began to be built. Demand for new building areas increased and as there were no spare plots within the limits of medieval Warsaw, buildings started to be erected in the suburbs. In the 19th century forts engirdling the city with a double ring were a barrier to the natural development of a suburban zone. The growing number of Warsaw inhabitants and also fast developing industry exacted densification of the buildings inside the fortification. The result of it was town-planning chaos and lack of proportion between city and suburban zone After regaining independence attempts were made to repair the town-planning setting of the city and improvement of its appearance. The short period of relative political stabilization of the interwar era brought many interesting town-planning solutions which the author discusses in her article in more detail.

The presented book was written by a group of experts on Warsaw under the supervision of Stanislaw Cieplowski. The authors of the review concluded that the patrons of the names of assorted sites in Warsaw place the city within the range of Mediterranean culture; the commemorated figures include predominantly representatives of the arts and culture, followed by assorted patriotic activists, a fact which is indubitably the consequence of the tumultuous history of the country. The patrons of Warsaw streets distinctly reflect bonds with the past. The names of streets continue to be a lively and vital topic of social discussions, and interventions in this domain are frequently regarded as an attempt at undermining long-embedded values and as an attack launched against a valuable non-material heritage.

Opis:
In 1994, the Warsaw Royal Castle was honoured with an unequalled artistic and historically valuable art collection in Poland – a donation from the Lanckoroński Family – including two paintings attributed to Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606–1660): Girl in a picture frame and Scholar at his writing table. The most precious of the Polish eighteenth century royal collection pieces were considered lost for about fifty years and that is why Rembrandt’s authorship was put into doubt, mostly as far as the Girl’s portrait is concerned. New research for an up-to-date attribution of both pictures became the main focus for the Warsaw Royal Castle team: between 2004 and 2006 the paintings were examined, treated and reattributed as a result of the cooperation of Polish scientists, conservators and art historians – under guidance of professor Ernst van de Wetering, the head of the Rembrandt Research Project. The two pictures are not typical portraits – they are depictions of unknown persons referred to by the Dutch term tronie. Both models are picturesquely depicted in historical costumes, a frequent Rembrandt feature. Since the 1994 Lanckoroński family donation, Rembrandt’s paintings were on display in the Warsaw Royal Castle, whose museum undertook a project concerning their thorough examination focusing on confirmation of their attribution to Rembrandt. Technical examinations of both paintings were carried out in Cracow and in Warsaw. Experience resulting from the conservation treatment of Rembrandt’s Landscape with the Merciful Samaritan from the Czartoryski Museum in Cracow was helpful to the Warsaw conservation project, as did the support from Martin Bijl, a restorer of Rembrandt’s paintings, a collaborator of the Rembrandt Research Project and former Head of the Conservation Department at the Rijksmuseum. An interpretation of the technical examinations results was consulted with Karin Groen from the Netherlands Institute for Cultural Heritage, another collaborator of the R.R.P. The following types of examinations were carried out: observation in visible (day) light; normal, raking, reflected light and macro photography; IR examination; UV – induced luminescence of paint layers; X-ray examination; identification of wooden panels; stratigraphic analysis and examination of pigments, fillers and binders in samples from the paintings; microscopic and micro chemical analysis; analysis on cross-sections with a LMA 10 laser microspectral analyzer with a ruby laser; microscopic and microchemical analysis realization of scans and spectra images with the SEM-EDS method; examination of paint layer binders with GC-MS and FT-IR as a complementary technique IR absorption spectrophotometry and gas chromatography in connection with gas spectrography.

In this paper I describe a local, Warsowian discourse focused on the phenomena of immigration into the capital city from other parts of Poland. In Bourdieu's categories I draw upon the field of game played in Warsaw between two kinds of players: natives and immigrants. Both of them build definitions of the others based on wrongful stereotypes and prejudices. Such a discourse has been used by the natives as a tool of exclusion of the migrants from the sphere of work and symbolic capital. They impute the migrants to be immoral, bad qualified and determined to stay in Warsaw. The immigrants show the natives as the second or third generation of the immigrants from the poor countryside which came to the capital city directly after the World War II. From this point of view the present natives usurp "the right to the city", the symbolic capital and the right to take the best places on the job market. Specifically, I am interested in patterns of the exclusion constructed by the natives in the discourse and also in answers of immigrants who use rather defensive strategies.

The purpose of this article is to analyze and synthesize Kazimierz Twardowski’s ideas that belong to philosophy of education. The aim of education is “rational patriotism” – it should prepare “enlightened citizens” who not only love their country but also present some important features of character like discipline, hard work, sense of duty. Therefore upbringing becomes a central issue. Additionally, they should develop certain skills that serve prosperity of their nation like scientific thinking (propaedeutic of philosophy is vital subject at school) that are “levers of mental progress.” The aim was to be achieved on two entangled levels: by creation of a Polish national school and at an efficiently organized university, by well-prepared (didactics) and sage-like teachers (school and academic). Sources of his ideas can be found in his background; his encounter with Stoicism and Franz Brentano and his way of philosophizing. Clearness and precision of expression, profound analysis of concepts Twardowski applied in his social and pedagogical work as well as during theoretical considerations when distinguishing action and product of upbringing, and upbringing from education itself. His didactical success in creation of “an army of intellectuals” is a valuable proof of his ideas.

Residential buildings provide a very important, if not crucial, element of the human living environment. They also constitute one of the basic urban development forms. Therefore, the way housing development is designed bears consequences, including those in the field of sustainable development and climate change, for the entire urban body. Both at the EU, national and local level, decision-makers undertake a number of activities by setting standards for designing cities that take into account the requirements of sustainable development and climate responsible activities. The following paper focuses on selected documents developed for Warsaw in the last few years, in which the importance of the abovementioned issues is emphasized. The analyzed documents set regulations and standards for planning the city, including the design of buildings and housing estates. Document records are analyzed through the prism of sustainable and pro-climate design criteria. The present paper is aimed at specifying guidelines intended for architects, according to which new sustainable housing developments should be designed. Moreover, attempts to evaluate the above guidelines in relation to determinants of the designers’ work are made in the present article.

W oparciu o przebadane źródła ustalono, że masowe egzekucje w Parku Sowińskiego wykonane 5 sierpnia 1944 roku objęły mieszkańców: domu Hankiewicza (Wolska 129), domu magistrackiego (Wolska 132), domu Boguckiego (Elekcyjna 4), domu Krzemińskiego (Elekcyjna 6), domu Müllera (Elekcyjna 8), posesji Grobosza (Ordona 14), domu Tyborów (Ordona 18), posesji Minstera (Ordona 20) i posesji Cyglera (Ordona 22).
In the literature on the subject to date, the number of victims of germans mass executions of civilians in Sowiński Park on August 5, 1944 has been defined as 1,500 people. In this article, the reconstruction of the number of inhabitants in the area covered by these executions was taken as the basis for the analysis of these data. Based on the researched sources, it was found that the mass executions in the Sowiński Park on August 5, 1944 affected the inhabitants of the Hankiewicz house (Wolska 129), the town hall’s house (Wolska 132), the Bogucki house (Elekcyjna 4), the Krzemiński house (Elekcyjna 6), Müller’s house (Elekcyjna 8), Grobosz property (Ordona 14), Tyborów house (Ordona 18), Minster property (Ordona 20) and Cygler property (Ordona 22). Due to the lack of preservation of pre-war registration books for the studied area, to reconstruct the number of inhabitants were used: post-war testimonies of witnesses before the District Commission for the Investigation of German Crimes in Warsaw (Okręgowa Komisja Badania Zbrodni Niemieckich w Warszawie), data from the database of civilian victims of the Warsaw Uprising (baza ofiar cywilnych Powstania Warszawskiego), the Warsaw Uprising Museum, interviews from the Oral History Archive (Archiwum Historii Mówionej) of the Warsaw Rising Museum, photoplans cities from 1935 and 1945, plan of the mortgage plots from 1936, German aerial photos 1944 from the National Archives at College Park, extremely valuable German aerial photos from 1939 from the private collection of Robert Marcinkowski, photos of the property at Wolska street from 1938 from the team of the Dimensions Department (Referat Gabarytów) of the State Archives in Warsaw, sketches and notes from 1945-1946 from the team for the Capital Reconstruction Office (Biuro Odbudowy Stolicy) in the State Archives in Warsaw (Archiwum Państwowe w Warszawie) and press mentions from the pre-war and occupation period from the collection of the National Library in Warsaw (Biblioteka Narodowa w Warszawie). Based on the above-mentioned sources, it was found that the total number of inhabitants in the study area was approximately 1,230. In the opinion of the author of the article, the indicated discrepancy in relation to the current state of research, reaching almost 22%, indicates the need for further research on other places of mass executions of civilians during the Warsaw Uprising of 1944.

The article critically analyses the book Chaos Warszawa. Porządki przestrzenne polskiego kapitalizmu [Warsaw-Chaos. Spatial Orders of Polish Capitalism] by Joanna Kusiak. An attempt at juxtaposing the said publication with other takes on today’s Warsaw space, the city’s post-World War II rebuilding, and post-1989 transformation, results in complex yet reappearing image of Warsaw as a city tainted with chaos. Considering different ways out of this stalemate, on the other hand, as in approaching the problem from another angle, is the aim of the present text. The book by Kusiak is a starting point for a discussion regarding not only space and chaos, but also theoretical discourse related to the city space and its meaning for Warsaw’s development.

The aim of the study is to investigate the impact the non-existent theatre sites exert on the contemporary spaces of Warsaw and to answer the following question: Do the non-existent theatres Warsaw theatre area, exist in the city architectural and urban-planning memory, or only in historical materials? The research methods necessary to define and solve the scientific problem that were applied included: analysis and criticism of source literature, observation without intervention, case study, intuitive method based on the Author’s personal experience. The research results showed that Warsaw theatre area operated in the years 1870–1939 Teatr Letni [The Summer Theatre], Teatr Nowy [The New Theatre] and Teatr Nowości [The Novelty Theatre] / / Teatr im. Wojciecha Bogusławskiego [Wojciech Bogusławski’s Theatre] failed to leave an architectural, urban- planning or symbolic trace. Hence the conclusion that these theatres do not exist in the city architectural and urban memory.

This study determines the approximate duration of the thermal seasons in Warsaw, and investigates their long-term variability. The measurement data come from the Ursynów meteorological station at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences (WULS) (λE 21°02’52’’, φN 52°09’38’’, 102.5 m a.s.l.), situated in the south of Warsaw, and comprise mean diurnal air temperatures for the years 1961-2013. In order to identify thermal seasons, the method of five-day rolling averages was applied, which revealed a substantial year-by-year variability. The achieved results were close to those found by other methods for stations situated within the same climatic region. Over the analysed period, winters and springs have become shorter, whereas the other two seasons have become longer. Nevertheless, the positive trend was only statistically significant for thermal summers. The increasing length of the thermal summer in Warsaw Ursynów may be due to the influence of urban heat islands in built-up areas.

Opis:
Polish schools achieve their educational aims, as set out in the curriculum, within the framework of obligatory class periods. Extracurricular activities may be organised when schools receive additional funding from local government budgets. The aim of this article is to demonstrate the relationship between the socio-economic conditions of individual Warsaw districts and the availability of extracurricular activities in those districts' primary schools. The analysis carried out during this study disproved the initial assumption that more affluent districts with higher per capita incomes and a higher proportion of expenditures directed towards educational aims would be characterised by a larger offer of extracurricular activities. Rather, what distinguishes districts with the highest availability of extracurricular activities is their peripheral location within the territory of Warsaw. There, schools ensure longer hours of supervision for children and organised the time after class, which offers support to the parents. It is likely that it is the parents who, due to their relatively longer commute between home and work, support the organisation of such activities, not least financially.

She tried to interpret in a semantic way the collected lexical russicisms in respect of their definitions in definitional dictionaries of Polish language, in etymological dictionaries and in other sources. The following topic groups concerning the army were distinguished taking into consideration the noted lexicon, topic groups differing as far as the meaning is concerned: weapon names, military reinforcement, divisions and subdivisions, rank and military occupational specialty, soldiers designation and armies names. Formal and semantic borrowings dominated in the field. Word-formative calques were found on the second place. Semantic calques represented the smallest group.

Road to Exclusion – Neoliberal Discourse on Privatization of Schools and School Canteens in Warsaw The article deals with social influence of neoliberal discourse on privatization of schools and school canteens in Warsaw. In the light of social analysis of discourse, the term means social activities situated in the area designated by ‘understanding, communicating and interpersonal interactions, where the above mentioned phenomena are being a part of a wider context constituted by social and cultural structures and processes’. In Teun A. van Dijk’s understanding of the term, a discursive social activity takes place, when ‘the language users take part in communication not only as entities, but also as members of various groups, institutions and cultures’, whereas through their statements they create, they confirm or question the social and political structures and institutions. The city council and district councils are places where the speech not only mirrors relations of social ascendancy (the councilors are always first to speak before the inhabitants), but also this ascendancy is being ‘performed’ by ‘constituting’ their recipient at the moment of enunciation (for example the figure of ‘homo sovieticus’ often mentioned by the councilors). Councils are places, where the enuncia- ted social structure mentions and preserves the ascendant’s position. The aim of the article was to show how some of the macro-scaled problems (neo-liberalism, crisis of the representative’s democracy) reveal its violent nature in the micro-scale (Warsaw councilors’ policy towards schools and school canteens).

The subject of this article is a big city social Policy towards old people with an example of Warsaw. The author was inspired to write this text with her partici- pation in a workgroup “Exclusion of elderly persons,” which prepared a diagnosis and formulated initial suggestions to the Social Strategy for Warsaw 2009–2020. It seems, that regardless the differences between big towns, basic goals and assumptions for the policy towards senior citizens are similar in the majority of metropolitan communities. Due to the fact that any proposal concerning social policy should be preceded by a diag- nosis, the article begins with the description of demographic situation of big Polish towns (above half million population) and with a diagnosis of the situation of senior citi- zens in Warsaw. Demographic and socio-economic data were obtained from the Central Statistical Office publications.

Charakter architektury mieszkaniowej określają warunki, w jakich powstaje. Koncepcje kształtowania osiedli i budynków zmieniają się w relacji do uwarunkowań przestrzennych, gospodarczych i środowiskowych. Zestawiając przykłady historyczne i współczesne realizacje podejmiemy próbę wskazania kierunku, w jakim mógłby podążać proces tworzenia (idealnego?) miejsca do mieszkania.
The nature of residential architecture is defined by the conditions of its origins. Concepts of forming living estates and buildings vary in relation to the spatial, economic and environmental conditions. Comparing historical and contemporary examples we will attempt to indicate the direction in which the process of creating a (perfect?) place to live could follow. A manifestation of a pre-war building activities were initiatives executed by the Social Insurance Institution and the Military Cantonment Fund. These institutions, with the organizational and financial support from the state, carried out a series of residential investments while taking opportunity to try to create new standards for the flats of small and medium size. Currently, the vast majority of the primary housing market are dwellings sold by developers. Let’s put the question of whether and how we can use those experiences struggling with the limitations and circumstances of today’s market.

Opis:
In assessing the constitutionality of the contested Article 215, para. 2 of the Real Estate Management Act, it was stated that it is important to ascertain whether the differentiation of former owners, based on the criterion of deprivation of physical possession of the plot after 5 April 1958, was justified, and therefore whether it has such essential nature that justifies different treatment of similar entities. Pointing to the special status of the right to compensation, as stressed in the jurisprudence of the Constitutional Tribunal, the author claims, however, that claiming the right to compensation cannot be limited by an incidental and historical time criterion, which is the date of entry into force of the Act of 1958, even if the economic reasons argue for that approach. Given the above, it was found that Article 215 para. 2 of the Act, to the extent of the above interpretation, is inconsistent with the provisions of the Constitution.

The main aim of the article is an interpretation of novels written by Piotr Paziński – especially Birds’ streets (Ptasie ulice) from 2013, but also Guesthouse (Pensjonat) from 2009. In his prose the author is always searching for traces of Jewish identity and memory of the war-time in contemporary Warsaw (and its surroundings). His literary strategy is a kind of spatial obsession – he exhibits places: destroyed, ruined or removed as a sign of lost memory about Jewish history in Polish space. Individual identity of characters created in his novels (as well as possibly his own self-identification) is formed during the recognition of places connected with singular biography and common history.

Well known as varsavianist, he was also master of literary miniature. It is not a literary genre in the strict sense. “Literary miniature”, coherent artistic statement, as short as possible, combines elements of poem, essay, short narrative and others. Grzeniewski always highly valued precision, he preferred condensed form of expression. I therefore think, that the books of this writer (Igły w stogu siana, “Drobiazgów duch, wspaniały i powietrzny…”, Taniec z mufką and others) deserve attention.

The emergence of civil justice after the evacuation of Russians from the Polish Kingdom in 1915. This is one of the most important moments in the history of Polish judiciary. After more than a century of power invaders there is a chance to regain control over the administration and the judiciary. Polish lawyers had hoped that the occupiers leave the judiciary in their hands. Warsaw and Lublin - the fastest two centers operating in the Kingdom have become a role model for other courts. Regulations approved by the Committee of Citizens in Warsaw described the organization of the local judicial institutions. Its provisions became a model for the courts of Lublin, modifications resulted only from local relations. In addition to the changes in the organization and structure of the judiciary was introduced innovations in the rules of substantive law, both civil and criminal. They eased and modernize the existing legislation of the Russian case studies. The need for the establishment of the civil courts, as well as their functioning efficiently also testified by the number of pending cases. Polish lawyers hope to permanently take over the judiciary in the Kingdom were quickly snuffed out by the occupation authorities. Both in Warsaw and Lublin Polish citizens' initiative was considered as illegal and brought to its liquidation. However, experience has resulted in a few weeks on September 1 IX 1917 at the time of the recovery from the hands of the occupiers of justice.

Somewhat paradoxically, the Polish capital city’s foreigner landscape proved to be the most variegated, diverse and vivid in the first post-war decade. The Russians, Germans, Englishmen, Frenchmen, or Italians already residing in Warsaw were joined, as part of post-war voluntary and forced (political-refugee) migration, by nationals of Spain, Greece, Korea, Persia, Yugoslavia, or even Canada. The article shows the ways along which they reached Poland and Warsaw, and the various aspects of everyday life of those aliens: work, assimilation, and political entanglements.
