PUBLIC LIBRARY IN WARSAW
WARSAW
Opis:
The historical building in 26 Koszykowa Street is the seat of a Public Library established almost a hundred years ago for the capital city of Warsaw. In 2007 this institution will be celebrating its round anniversary. Created in 1907 thanks to the initiative of the Public Library Society, it has been almost uninterruptedly gathering and rendering available scientific collections and the belles lettres. From 1914 it is housed in an object erected due to the funds and efforts of Eugenia Kierbedz, born Kierbedz, the daughter of Stanislaw, an outstanding communications engineer and the author of the first permanent bridge across the Vistula in Warsaw. The Library was designed by acclaimed architects: Jan Heurich Junior and his collaborators - Wladyslaw Marconi and Artur Gurney. The building is composed of the two-storey main part which occupies the whole width of the front of the lot, and a single-storey outbuilding in the back, connected by means of a narrow and also one-story passage, perpendicular to the north-south axis. The most representative is the front fragment and the passage built on a ground plan similar to the letter T, which originally served predominantly library purposes. It still houses the large reading room featuring lavish architectural outfitting, harmoniously corresponding to the monumental facade which refers to the principles of Classical architecture. The outbuilding adjoining the passage and granted two wings of different width and height (on the ground plan of the letter L) formerly contained book storerooms, which burnt down during the second world war. Almost from its very outset the Library has been forced to tackle assorted problems involving available space. Successive postwar transformations (such as the erection of a new reading rooms building on the spot of a non-extant house in 28 Koszykowa Street) managed to meet the constantly growing needs of this institution for only a brief space of time. This is the reason why despite numerous failures, up to this day the Library has not resigned from efforts to expand and modernise its facilities. The results of a competition organised by SARP have been announced in December 2005. First prize for a conception of enlarging the Library went to the Bulanda, Mucha Architekci Sp. z o.o. studio. The adaptation of the Library buildings complex will be carried out in stages, and its completion is foreseen for 2007. Will it be conducted with due respect for the historical substance, or shall it assume the form of a successful integration of the new with the old; finally, will it add splendour to the anniversary of the hundred-years old institution? We still do not know the answer.

WARSAW POLYTECHNIC
Opis:
The Warsaw Circle of Architects, established in 1904 and active at the Associations of Technicians, dealt with professional questions, architectural competitions and the socio-spatial problems of the city. It also discussed the training of future representatives of the profession in Warsaw since many architects from the Kingdom of Poland had studied abroad. Members of the Circle aimed at creating an independent Department of Architecture within the Warsaw Polytechnic. In February 1915 their efforts resulted in setting up an organizational committee. The architects who joined the committee devised a detailed programme of the Department and became members of its academic staff. The Department of Architecture was opened on 15 November 1915. It had not been granted space in the Polytechnic building, and was forced to inaugurate its courses at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts in the Powisle district. Information about the choice of this site is contained in a letter of 20 August 1912, addressed to Eugenia Kierbedziowa, the founder of the building. The correspondence is preserved in the collections of the Public Library of the capital city of Warsaw amongst material comprising her legacy. The content of the letter shows that Eugenia Kierbedziowa agreed to the proposal, which also reflected the stand of some of the Circle members who envisaged architectural training combined with the fine arts. The Department of Architecture was located in the Powisle district only for a year, up to the autumn of 1916. From that time on, it remains in a building in 55 Koszykowa Street.

Opis:
Muranów, or about land clearing The article is a review of “Festung Warschau” by Elżbieta Janicka which maps the clash between the recently built monuments celebrating Jewish or Polish places of martyrdom from the times of Second World War. Janicka walks through the streets of the former Jewish neighbourhoods of Warsaw; she photographs and discusses the new plaques, crosses, monuments, and other forms of public marking of history on the buildings, squares and streets. She convincingly shows that the new historical commemorative signs of Polish martyrdom are often placed in the sites that were marked by Jewish resistance or suffering, and that the marks of Polish suffering are rarely linked materially to the site. The new monuments obstruct and hide the past presence of Warsaw Jews and, by submerging their past, create a new vision of ethnically cleansed history of Warsaw, especially in its relation to Second World War. The review applauds the book and rejects some of the criticism against it.

Opis:
Artykuł zawiera opatrzoną wstępem i komentarzami edycję dwunastu listów Emila Młynarskiego pisanych do żony Anny  w Lozannie w okresie 1905–06. Tęsknota do niej walczy o lepsze z myślami  o powrocie do zawodu.
The article is an edition (with introduction and commentaries) of Emil Młynarski’s twelve letters to his wife Anna, who in 1905–1906 resided in Lausanne. At that time, Młynarski took his wife and four (still small) children away from the revolution-ridden Warsaw to the safety of Switzerland. He remained in the city, but visited his family at times. He was not present at the birth of his youngest daughter Anna (in the night of 31 December 1905 / 1 January 1906). ‘[She is] a Swiss, so a citizen of a free country’, he wrote in one of the letters, ‘unlike us, who remain perpetually under the [Russian] knout’. He could write openly, since he sent those letters courtesy of private travellers (the Warsaw post was then on strike). The letters bear valuable testimony to Młynarski’s political attitudes, and retain the value of free sincere statements, not subjected to self-censorship. They also happen to be the only part of his correspondence (scattered throughout the world) that is known to researchers today. They are a document of a time of crisis in his professional work, accompanied by financial problems, resulting from the fact that from the moment he hadbroken his ties with Warsaw Philharmonic (in April 1905), which he had headed, his only employment was now in Warsaw Music Institute. Despite holding the post of the Institute’s director, he still felt frustrated in his personal ambitions as a talented conductor. The letters also present Młynarski as a caring husband and lover, genuinely in love with his wife, torn between missing her and hopes for a return to his profession. Nevertheless, even his connections and contacts at the governor-general’s office did not restore to him either a place at Warsaw Opera, where he wished to return, or in the city’s music life in general. His conflict with Aleksander Rajchman, the Philharmonic’s administrative director, which was the reason for Młynarski leaving the conductor’s pulpit – continued. Młynarski hated his opponent, but did not see him in ethnic categories as a Jew, which was very rare in those times, when anti-Semitism was virtually the norm. My edition has been supplemented with an afterword concerning the dramatic fates of Młynarski’s family during WWII, when one of Anna Młynarska’s sisters, Henryka, was deported with her three children to Siberia as ‘a socially alien element’, as also were two children of another sister, Wanda. Anna herself avoided the deportation most likely by hiding in a little cabin in the orchard. Her son Bronisław, found himself in Soviet POW camps after the invasion of 17 September 1939, and was one of the small group of (395) Polish army officers who survived the Katyn massacre – as one of those whose release from the camp was due to the efforts of the German embassy. I believe that those efforts may have been inspired by Richard Strauss, the first head of the Reichsmusikkammer, who had been a close acquaintance of Bronisław’s father, Emil Młynarski.

Opis:
The article was written on the basis of the so-called Warsaw-Kholm archives of Ivan Ohiienko – a well-known Ukrainian statesman, religious figure, and scientist, professor at the University of Warsaw in 1925–1932 – which were found in the archive of Polish Institute of National Remembrance in Warsaw and studied by the author. The documents were still considered lost during the Warsaw Uprising of 1944. The reasons for dispersing and the ways of moving this archive collection are clarified, the facts about the preservation of a part of the documents and the way they got after the war to the archive of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Poland, and later to the archive of Polish Institute of National Remembrance in Warsaw, are presented here for the first time. The characteristics of the archive are presented in terms of the volumes, personalities, and public institutions with which the creator of the archive corresponded. The multifaceted issues of the correspondence are considered against the background of the philosophy of being an individual in the context of emigration. The activities of Ohiienko in the complex reality of emigration are analysed in several aspects: the struggle for physical survival, civil and professional assertion, and the thirst for fulfilment of his duties before he was forced to abandon the Motherland because of political reasons. The conclusions emphasise the need to resolve the issue regarding the copying of the discovered archival documents at the intergovernmental level, scientific study of them, and their first publication in Ukraine.

Wall and window: the rubble of the Warsaw Ghetto as the narrative space of the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish JewsOpened in 2013, the Warsaw-based POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews is situated in the center of the former Nazi Warsaw ghetto, which was destroyed during its liquidation in 1943. The museum is also located opposite to the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes and Martyrs, built in 1948, as well as in between of the area of the former 19th-century Jewish district, and of the post-war modernist residential district of Muranów, designed as a district-memorial of the destroyed ghetto. Constructed on such site, the Museum was however narrated as a “museum of life”, telling the “thousand-year old history” of Polish Jews, and not focused directly on the history of the Holocaust or the history of Polish antisemitism. The paper offers a critical analysis of the curatorial and architectural strategies assumed by the Museum’s designers in the process of employing the urban location of the Museum in the narratives communicated by the building and its main exhibition. In this analysis, two key architectural interiors are examined in detail in terms of their correspondence with the context of the site: the Museum’s entrance lobby and the space of the “Jewish street,” incorporated into the main exhibition’s sub-galleries presenting the interwar period of Polish-Jewish history and the history of the Holocaust. The analysis of the design structure of these two interiors allows to raise a research question about physical and symbolic role of the material substance of the destroyed ghetto in construction of a historical narrative that is separated from the history of the destruction, as well as one about the designers’ responsibilities arising from the decision to present a given history on the physical site where it took place.Mur i okno.

The creative sector has become an important source used to create competitive advantages of the cities. The importance of creative industries in urban development was spotted more than a decade ago. Creative capital is perceived as an impulse and engine of urban changes, a source of new advantages and attractions. Some point out that it mainly develops in big cities, where the authorities deliberately implement measures aimed at supporting and attracting creative entities. The purpose of this study is to present the condition of the creative sector in Warsaw and the way its functioning is perceived by its representatives. It also discusses the support of city authorities for the development of the creative sector.

Opis:
The article deals with the question of the existence of the Jewish community and the barriers between Jews and non-Jews in the Old Warsaw from the 1420s to the 1520s. The contact points and areas of the two communities, as well as the tools used to communicate between them, are distinguished. Firstly, Jewish property in the space of Old Warsaw, as well as neighbouring and economic contacts, are noticed. Then, the presence of Jews both from Warsaw and other towns and regions in court sessions is analysed. Local and Lithuanian or Volhynian Jews appeared in the Old Warsaw town hall. However, the most important place for official meetings of Warsaw Jews with the Christian community was the court for nobles. It is visible that the first half of the fifteenth century was a unique period with a far-reaching agreement between the Christian inhabitants of Warsaw and its surroundings and the members of the local Jewish community. Within the linguistic area, the communication tools were Polish and German, while Latin, possibly familiar to some Jews, was not a significant communication barrier. Hebrew had its position in the bureaucratic system as well. The protection of the local duke secured a relatively harmonious economic cooperation, which was fostered by the then economic situation of Mazovia. The mid-fifteenth century brought a violent turn, which was influenced by the changes in the political and economic situation, as well as the religious atmosphere. Warsaw burghers started to perceive the Jews as competition, as ‘others’, and began to approach them with growing hostility.

Opis:
A radical reconstruction of the exposition layout at the Museum of the City of Warsaw, connected with the general reconstruction of the facilities and retirement of its longtime director, Janusz Durko (1951-2003), resulted in 2017 in opening a new permanent exposition called Things from Warsaw. The exposition consists of 21 cabinets containing 8 000 items selected out of 300 000 included in the museum holdings (e. g., Cabinet of Warsaw Monuments, Cabinet of Warsaw Silver and Plate Tableware, Cabinet of the Warsaw Sirens, Cabinet of Postcards, Cabinet of Souvenirs, Cabinet of Shrines). The main criterion was the materiality and authenticity of particular items, which resulted in the absence of multimedia presentations and suggested “appropriate” narratives. The main curator of the exposition is Jarosław Trybuś, art historian and curator rewarded with the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2008. His team followed an idea of Bjørnar Olsen that due to various conceptualizations the material world studied by the humanities has been so dematerialized that we can hardly believe our eyes. Thus the features of the exposition – sincerity, seriousness, and modesty – suggest a new approach to the city’s history through experiencing the reality of things treated not so much as “witnesses,” but rather as “actors” of the past events. This turn to materiality stems from the hope to come close to the things without the mediation of words imposing predictable interpretations in advance. In other words, the exposition is a kind of lesson in openness, multidirectional reading, and the de-ideologization of history. The Things from Warsawexhibition has been analyzed in reference to three criteria: openness to the “other,” creating a vision of the future, and the inspiring power of imagination.

Opis:
The Polish version of the article was published in Roczniki Humanistyczne 61 (2013), issue 2. This article is devoted to a presentation of the contents of one of the political sermons preached in Krakow Cathedral on 8th May 1810. A Cathedral Canon, Rev. Augustyn Lipiński delivered it on the feast of St Stanislaus in the presence of King Frederick Augustus I of Saxony and Duke of Warsaw, his court and the dignitaries who accompanied him: the Minister of War, Prince Józef Poniatowski, the Prefect of the Krakow Department, Prince Henryk Lubomirski, and many department and municipal officials. In its content the sermon was devoted to authority and the way to exercise it. It is constructed as a polemic with contemporary currents striving after secularization of the ethos of the official. The preacher expressed his conviction that a virtuous official and a good citizen are ones who regard the good of the country and of their fellow-citizens more highly than their own good or even their lives; they are ready to serve them and the king who is exercising power by the will of Providence, and they never look to their own gain in this service – either material profits or fame.

Opis:
The essay calls for filling a gap in the studies on Warsaw Uprising concerning the place of queer people. A recent play, Snakepit by Joanna Oparek is considered, and the “scandal” surrounding Elżbieta Janicka’s academic work Festung Warschau is analysed, but the main source of understanding non-normative masculinities and sexualities is Miron Białoszewski’s Memoir of the Warsaw Uprising. The author offers a “paranoid” reading of traces, suggestions, allusions, and “illogical” fragments to build a working metaphor of queer acquaintances as an alternative “map” without the map. Finally he invokes the role of the picaresque narrative convention in representing such paranoid queer relationships.

Official types of writing are the text patterns and updates that regulate communication between institutions and specific (subordinate) communities. Sometimes one of the parties of the interaction is a whole group, sometimes it is a larger or smaller part of it, and at other times another one is assigned to be the addressee of the message. Regardless of the number of intended recipients and, less often, the broadcasters, all the articles presented in this text include direct or indirect information on the living conditions and interpersonal relationships in the Warsaw Ghetto. All pieces of information are also characterized by a constant set of features: directness, impersonality, lack of emotions, precision and comprehension, and textual standardization.

Opis:
The extension of the second line of the Warsaw Metro (M2), running from east to west, is currently under construction. The opening of sections in the eastern and western parts of the line has been carried out in 4 stages, successively handing over sections of 2−3 stations each. The section currently under construction is the last section of the 2nd line in the south western part, which also includes the construction of the Karolin technical and holding station (STP Karolin). The Varsovia trains delivered by Škoda, whose styling is similar to the Inspiro trains from Siemens, which have been in service on the Warsaw metro for several years, have been acquired for the rolling stock of the line. The construction of the metro was disrupted by the SARS-Cov-2 coronavirus pandemic (2020−2022) as, alongside a delay in the completion date or the delivery of rolling stock, it caused an increase in the price of materials and labor costs, forcing the parties (City Hall of Warsaw, contractors) to revalue the contract.

Opis:
In the article entitled Experience and module in shaping buildings in the Warsaw suburban zone it raised the issue of specific conditions which shaped the conception of city planning foundations in Warsaw. The author stresses that the medieval arrangement of the city did not differ from commonly accepted modules and that such a state lasted and included the 16th century. Only in the next centuries namely in the 1 7th and 18th century did the situation change. The old Warsaw situated behind medieval walls lost its significance and prestige. Relocation of the capital to Warsaw created a new situation for development (mostly town-planning) of the city, exactly, together with the King's residence, splendid residences of nobility, magnates, churches and monasteries began to be built. Demand for new building areas increased and as there were no spare plots within the limits of medieval Warsaw, buildings started to be erected in the suburbs. In the 19th century forts engirdling the city with a double ring were a barrier to the natural development of a suburban zone. The growing number of Warsaw inhabitants and also fast developing industry exacted densification of the buildings inside the fortification. The result of it was town-planning chaos and lack of proportion between city and suburban zone After regaining independence attempts were made to repair the town-planning setting of the city and improvement of its appearance. The short period of relative political stabilization of the interwar era brought many interesting town-planning solutions which the author discusses in her article in more detail.

Opis:
The presented book was written by a group of experts on Warsaw under the supervision of Stanislaw Cieplowski. The authors of the review concluded that the patrons of the names of assorted sites in Warsaw place the city within the range of Mediterranean culture; the commemorated figures include predominantly representatives of the arts and culture, followed by assorted patriotic activists, a fact which is indubitably the consequence of the tumultuous history of the country. The patrons of Warsaw streets distinctly reflect bonds with the past. The names of streets continue to be a lively and vital topic of social discussions, and interventions in this domain are frequently regarded as an attempt at undermining long-embedded values and as an attack launched against a valuable non-material heritage.
