The author analyzes a piece of 17th century chronicle of Charles IX of Sweden and its Polish translation done by Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz. This fragment presented in a satire form concerns critics of behavior and private life of Anna Vasa (1568–1625), a niece of the king of Sweden. Both Old Swedish and Old Polish texts are valuable sources of information about the Swedish princess as the information about her private life is very scarce. The analyzed satire presents real and dubious facts (where the credibility is concerned) of the princess’s biography.

The aim of the article is to present the phenomenon of famine in the army of the Crown and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania during the reign of the House of Vasa. Shortages of food were not present in the army constantly. Nevertheless, they were a frequent phenomenon during wars. It was not always possible to buy or steal something due to destructions in the area where the army was staying. In situations of no possibility to purchase food products, people tried to look for things that could fill their stomachs in the nearest surrounding. They would pick rhizomes, tree leaves, vegetables and herbs. Carrion as well as ill and injured animals were eaten. A symbol of famine was eating horse meat. The last resort was cannibalism.

Antonio Querenghi, Vladislaus Vasa, panegyric, Neo-Latin poetry
Opis:
The subject of this edition is a forgotten 17th-century Polonicum: a Latin panegyric in hexameter by Antonio Querenghi entitled Ad urbem Romam in adventu Serenissimi Vladislai, Poloniae Principis (To the city of Rome on the occasion of the arrival of His Most Serene Highness Vladislaus, the Prince of Poland). The work, published in 1625 in Rome, was noted in bibliographies of S. Ciampi and K. Estreicher as anonymous. This is because the only copy known of the first edition until recently, preserved in the holdings of Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan, was deprived of the title page. The discovery of a second, complete copy in the collection of Biblioteca Casanatense in Rome allowed us to identify the author, namely the Padovan humanist Antonio Querenghi (1546-1633), who from 1605 served as the pope’s personal secretary (cubicularius), prelate and referendary of both signatures. The closest relation Querengi developed with Maffeo Barberini (Urban VIII), the “pope-Cicero” and patron of poets and artists, at whose side he stayed until his own death. On 19 January 1625 he graced with his panegyric the Roman visit of Prince Vladislaus Vasa, the later King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania Vladislaus IV. The prince arrived in Rome on 20 December 1624, after an eight-month journey around Europe. Vladislaus, who tried to travel incognito, was received with all the honour due to the successor to the Swedish throne with the title of electi Magni Ducis Moschoviae (the elected Grand Duke of Muscovy). In the minds of the inhabitants of Europe, his person was also inextricably associated with the double triumph over the “schismatic” Muscovy, and above all with fending off Turks at the battle of Chocim (2 September–9 October 1621). Vladislaus spent the fortnight from 20 December 1624 to 2 January 1625 in the papal capital and took part in the celebration of the Jubilee. On 17 January he arrived there again after a short trip to Naples and left the city after only three days. Yet it was the latter short stay in Rome that the grandest reception in honour of the Polish Prince was held. On Sunday, 19 January, after a private audience with Pope Urban, at which only the closest curial dignitaries (with Querenghi probably among them) and officials from Vladislaus’ retinue were present, a sumptuous dinner was given with a concert afterwards. In the panegyric written for this occasion, Querenghi praises Vladislaus’ triumphs over “Muscovy twice defeated” (he meant armed attempts of the prince to the tsarist throne in the years 1610-1619) and over “the Thracian (i.e. Turkish) enemy”, the army of sultan Osman II. The ideological pivot of the poem is the pope’s planned general military expedition against Turkey: Urban VIII anoints the Polish Prince as the commander in chief of the upcoming crusade and a defender of Christianity. Vladislaus appears to be a new Hercules choosing the difficult path of Virtue, filled with renunciations and leading to eternal fame. In the panegyric apostrophe, the poet appeals to the Christian prince to follow the example of the mythical hero by taming the “godless monsters” (monstra impia) and taking upon his shoulders the weight of the world resting theretofore on the shoulders of the Italian Atlas – Pope Urban. Ad urbem Romam constitutes an excellent example of Querenghi’s stylistic manner shaped in the neo-Platonist spirit of hermetism, which made the poet create labyrinthine and enigmatic texts for the exclusive use of a narrow circle of exegetes. This manner resulted in a discrepancy, starkly visible through the refined hexameters, between two irreconcilable textual (and thus essentially linguistic) facts, one arising from historic discourse and the other generated within conventionally antiquisating, petrified, panegyric hyperbole. Namely, between Vladislaus who, abashed, retreated from Muscow and spent the battle of Chocim sick in his own tent, and the new Hercules who puts to rout the schismatic-pagan monsters threatening the Western civilisation.

Two Anonymous Eclogues from the First Half of the 17th Century Found in a Manuscript Preserved in the Baworowscyki Library in LvivThe main aim of this paper is to present a critical edition of two eclogues found in manuscript no. 1332 in the Baworowscy Library in Lviv. The eclogues were probably written in the 1630s or the early 1640s. This is the first critical edition of these texts. Manuscript no. 1332 is the only known source of these eclogues. The transcription is based on the rules contained in the script Zasady wydawania tekstów staropolskich (Wrocław 1955; “B” transcription). The punctuation has been adapted to contemporary rules. The transcription is provided with detailed notes and commentaries, which are a source of information about the meaning of Old-Polish words as well as proverbs. References to biblical texts and mythological and historical context are also well explained. “The first eclogue, entitled A Quarrel, is a paraphrase of the Sixth Eclogue of Baptista Mantuanus. It was written in the form of a dialogue between two shepherds who talk about the habits of the townspeople.” One of the interlocutors criticizes the vices of the courtiers, merchants, astrologers, medics, lawyers and Christian priests. These tirades are contrasted with the second shepherd’s replies. He condemns his interlocutor and accuses him of being too impetuous. This eclogue bears the mark of a strong influence from the pastoral poetry written by Simon Simonides. This influence is evident in the pessimistic, decadent atmosphere and sad reflections on human degeneration. The eclogue contains an anecdote that humorously explains the main cause of social inequality. The second eclogue, The Grandiosity or the Election of Vladislaus IV Vasa, King of Poland and Sweden, is connected with the election sejm that took place in 1632. This poem is a paraphrase of the Seventh Eclogue of Calpurnius. Like A Quarrel, it is written in the form of a dialogue between two shepherds. One of them returns to the village after a long absence. He is asked by his friend to tell him about his journey. It turns out that the traveller visited Warsaw and was a witness to the election of Vladislaus IV Vasa. The panegyric part of the poem is extensive and implies that the decision of the electors was inspired by God. The author ingeniously uses some phrases from Calpurnius’ eclogue to describe the works of art collected by the king. Both eclogues reveal formidable literary training – they are comparable to bucolics written by Jan Gawiński and Adrian Wieszczycki.

Underwater archaeology has only been present in Poland for a few decades. Research carried out in the 1950s in the search for ancient Wolin brought out the first sites. Polish coasts abound in wrecks, whose preservation are helped by the low salinity and low temperature of the Baltic waters, which are also free of the voracious snail toredo navalis. The wreck are endangered, however, by hydro-technical investments, and underwater treasure hunters. Up to now, underwater archaeology has brought out hundreds of artifacts which come from mediaeval as well as more contemporary times, and which are on display at the National Museum in Szczecin and the Central Maritime Museum in Gdańsk. Discussions as to the extent of protection for underwater archaeological sites and the possibility of expanding the scope of research activities in this area. One of the greatest challenges is creating a monitoring system for underwater archaeological sites. Poland’s participation in the “Managing Cultural Heritage Underwater – MACHU” project should be one solution to this problem. It is also important to create a national underwater archaeology center, which would become a source of technical and substantive support for conservation services, and which would allow for more effective protection of artifacts in the range of Polish coast. Following examples of other European countries, we have to treat our maritime heritage as a valuable source of information about the history of our country and the entire Baltic basin, and protect these things while also making them accessible to a wide community of maritime history enthusiasts.

The article talks about three visits paid in 1609, 1611 and 1612 by prince Janusz Radziwiłł and Daniel Naborowski – one of the most eminent poets of the Polish Baroque – at the court of king James I in London. These visits were related to the wedding plans – Władysław IV Vasa, son of king Sigismund III Vasa, was supposed to marry English princess Elizabeth Stuart. In her honour Naborowski wrote a famous poem entitled Na oczy królewny angielskiej (For English Princess’ Eyes). During the second visit at the English court, 1st November 1611, Radziwiłł and Naborowski were probably watching the staging of Shakespeare’s The Tempest in the Banqueting House in the Palace of Whitehall. The author of the article points out a possible source of Shakespeare’s play which was a text written by a Polish humanist Marcin Kromer, widely known in Europe of those times thanks to its latin translation. Kromer’s text described a story of young prince Sigismund (the future king Sigismund III Vasa) who was born on an island in Malårm Lake where Eric XIV of Sweden imprisoned his parents: Eric’s brother John III of Sweden and his wife Catherine Jagiellon. A Polish poet Daniel Naborowski might have seen and possibly met William Shakespeare.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to show the scale of Anna Vasa’s (1568-1625) literary patronage and her role in the literary culture of the Commonwealth at the beginning of the 17th century. The Infanta’s ambitions to become a patron of Protestant culture in the Polish-Lithuanian state succumbing to Catholicism have been fulfilled. The most significant testimonies of this patronage are the works of Evangelicals: the monumental “Postylla” by Samuel Dambrowski, “Florilegium ex Paradiso Psalmorum” by Valerius Herberger or “Heraclitus” by Samuel Bolestraszycki. Anna Vasa’s influence on the literary culture of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the first twenty years of the 17th century is also demonstrated by the group of Catholic writers who offered her their works. They include, among others: Andrzej Zbylitowski, Stanisław Grochowski, Jan Achacy Kmita, Jerzy Cerazyn, Wawrzyniec Chlebowski. An additional value of this patronage is that the dedications and literary works show the deeds and personality of the princess. The abundance of texts related to Infanta makes the literature connected with the remarkable biography of an independent, well-educated woman, protector of natural scientists, as well as evangelical writers and theologians. The analysis of the royal patronage leads to the another conclusion that in the research on the writings of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the aspect of at least trilingualism of the contemporary literature, which was written in Polish, Latin and German, should be more widely considered.

In her article, Aleksandra Barwicka-Makula discusses King Sigismund III in the role of a father. She analyses this monarch’s attitude to the offspring born from his marriage to Anna Habsburg and focuses on the period after the death of his first wife, which provides an opportunity to present how the king fulfilled the task of a single father and what emotions accompanied his fulfilment of this task. A characteristic feature of Sigismund III’s upbringing style is that it was based on Habsburg models, developed at the Graz court by Archduchess Maria of Bavaria. The monarch consciously sought to strengthen family ties with the Styrian Habsburgs. In his will of May 19th, 1598, he appointed his mother-in-law and his brother-in-law, Archduke Ferdinand, later to become the emperor, as legal guardians of his offspring in the event of his own death. He hoped that his active contacts with the court in Graz, and through it with other European courts, would in future provide his children with appropriate connections to enable them to reach high dignities and honors.

The young Casimir Vasa was brought up at the court of his father, Sigismund III Vasa, in the atmosphere of great devotion, which made him enter the order of Jesuits. Even though he decided to leave the monastery and to take the Polish crown, he came back to the life of a monk after his abdication. The present paper presents the very few pieces of art commemorating the monastic life of John Casimir: an emblem, a medal, some prints and his tomb in Paris. All those objects demonstrate the deep piety of the king.

The aim of the article is to present the attempts undertaken by King John Casimir to make equal the powers of Lithuanian hetmans and thus to limit the authority of the Lithuanian grand hetman. To this end, the king, alongside with his legal attempts, appointed to the office of Lithuanian field hetman Wincenty Korwin Gosiewski, closely associated with the royal court. Attention also is paid to negative consequences of King John Casimir’s actions for the combat and operational capacity of the Lithuanian army.

The objective of this paper is to present a very rare document – the articles of the Lwów confederation. Only a few such documents survived and only as copies because, after the conclusion of a confederation, its articles were publicly burned. Publication of these documents will allow the readers for familiarizing themselves with an interesting contribution to the knowledge of the military history of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, without the need for a preliminary survey in the holdings of The Princes Czartoryski Library in Cracow.

Opis:
The political activity of Adam Kazanowski (1599–1649) Adam Kazanowski and his entire political career was closely associated with king Władysław IV (Ladislaus IV Vasa). As the monarch’s favorite, and since 1637 also one of the senators, Kazanowski became involved in issues relating to the state’s policy. Due to his close relations with the king and consequently his royalist views, he often identified with the opinions represented by the monarch and sided with his will. Yet on some occasions, Kazanowski’s attitude was far removed from the views represented by the monarch. Being close to the monarch’s inner circle, he participated in the majority of Parliament sessions (Diet sessions) during the reign of Władysław IV. Shortly after the monarch’s death, he was also involved in political issues associated with Chmielnicki’s Uprising. Yet due to the unfavorable attitude of king Jan Kazimierz (John II Casimir Vasa) and the continually worsening state of his health, his political activity became considerably less intense. The one-time king’s favorite ended his life not long afterwards, on 25 December 1649.

Opis:
Królowie polscy z dynastii Wazów odegrali kluczową rolę w powstaniu i rozwoju misji karmelitów bosych i jezuitów w Persji w XVII w. Pierwszym polskim historykiem, który zwrócił uwagę na wkład władców Rzeczypospolitej w rozwój i funkcjonowanie misji katolickich w Persji, był jezuita i misjonarz Juda Tadeusz Krusiński. W pracy Prodromus ad historiam revolutionis Persicae seu legationis Fulgide Porte ad Persarum Regem zamieścił on część zatytułowaną Appendix de legationibus persico-polonicis per quas serenissimorum Regum Poloniae protectioni missiones persicae assertae.
The Polish kings of the Vasa dynasty played a key role in the establishment and development of the 17th-century mission of the Discalced Carmelites and Jesuits in Persia. The first Polish historian who drew attention to the role of the kings of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the development and functioning of Catholic missions in Persia was the Jesuit and missionary Juda Tadeusz Krusiński. In the book Prodromus ad historiam revolutionis Persicae seu legationis Fulgide Porte ad Persarum Regem he included a separate chapter entitled Appendix de legationibus persico-polonicis per quas serenissimorum Regum Poloniae protectioni missiones persicae assertae. The most important form of patronage of Polish kings was political, organizational and financial support for missionary activities for both orders. Sigismund III not only became involved in the organization and stay of the first legation of the Discalced Carmelites in the Polish-Lithuanian state, but also actively participated in the founding of the first monasteries of the Order in Poland. Very quickly, the Holy See and the missionaries realized that the strong position of the Polish rulers at the Persian Shah’s court, where they were perceived as the most important and best-connected European allies in the war with the Ottoman Empire, could play a key role in ensuring stability and security for missionary activities. This made the Discalced Carmelites, and in the middle of the 17th century, the Jesuits, seek support at the court of Polish kings. The decisions of the Discalced Carmelites to place themselves under the protection of Ladislaus IV resulted from their knowledge of Poland, from over twenty years of experience in contacts with Sigismund III, as well as from a skillful assessment of the position of the Republic of Poland within the Safavid policy. Thanks to close cooperation with missionaries, the Polish court gained an additional channel for the circulation of information between Isfahan–Rome–Krakow/Warsaw. As F. Richard’s research showed, the renewal or granting of new privileges to both orders discussed here was closely related to the diplomatic activities of Polish kings. The Vasas, and later John III Sobieski, provided financial support to the missions in Persia. The perpetual foundation of Queen Louise Marie for the Jesuits was a unique form of assistance on a European scale to missionaries operating in Persia. It also became the foundation for the missionary and diplomatic activities of Polish Jesuits in the second half of the 17th century and at the beginning of the 18th century. At the same time, the Safavids, starting with Abbas I, began to treat missionaries as important liaisons with European countries, commissioning them, among others, to diplomatic missions. The Shahs, while granting them protection and privileges, knew that the presence of monks in their country, depended only on their will. In this way, the missionaries became a tool of pressure and an important element in relations with European countries, including Poland. That is why when conflicts with Turkey escalated in their or European countries, the Safavids adopted a positive attitude towards the monks. In these circumstances, T. Szemberg obtained permission to consecrate the Carmelite church in Isfahan and renew the privileges of this order. It was similar in the case of the Jesuits obtaining permission to start their missionary activity, which took place at the time of the war for Candia and during the stay of the Polish king’s embassy.

Opis:
The article deals with the fate of the relics of Saint Władysław donated in 1585 by the Polish queen Anna Jagiellonka to the Jesuit college in Pułtusk. They were handed over from the royal treasury as evidence of gratitude for the education of Andrzej Batory - nephew of King Stephen I. Later the members of the Waza dynasty: princess Anna Katarzyna (1634) and king Władysław IV Waza (1635), fond homage to these relics. At that time he also gave them a silver reliquary as a gift. After the suppression of the Jesuits, the fate of the relics was unknown. Artifacts connected associated with them were found in the church of Saint Peter and Paul in Pułtusk in 2016. Research was unable to confirm that 7 of the oldest parts of a skull came from Saint Władysław`s skull which is now kept in Györ (lack of the DNA in the parts from Pułusk). Later, it was confirmed that these artifacts venerated in Pułtusk were relics of Saint Władysław. On the basis of the source analysis and comparison of the size of herms and pillows the author fixed that this herm, which was kept in Diocesan Museum in Płock, known as herm Saint Maurycy`s herm is in fact the herm donated to the Pułtusk`s Jesuits by Władysław IV in 1635 on Saint Władysław`s relics.
