Similar to most cities in Europe/the world, Kosovo also faces the problem of urban mobility, which is characterised by congestion. The most concerning problems are: waste of time, money, energy consumption, environmental problems and others. They arise due to the imbalanced state of using urban mobility in Pristina (Prishtinë), while eco-travels are minor. In order to reduce these problems, this paper aimed to examine the current situation of urban mobility in Pristina by analysing the mobility indicators of cars, trains, buses, bicycles and walking, in relation to purpose, distance and time. The research methodology was the direct survey method conducted with the citizens of Pristina and daily immigrants over a week. The results of the survey showed that 44% of the participants used cars for travelling, while other transportation alternatives (soft and eco-transport) were limited and problematic. In the absence of institutional practices for collecting periodic data, the results of this study will not only contribute in filling the information gap, but also will properly address the needs for transportation planning in Pristina and design objectives for a multimodal transportation strategy in this city to lessen the negative impacts of the aforementioned problems and increase travel facilities.

Opis:

The purpose of the article is to research the nature of the projected package travel directive and its aims, scope, as well as the specific terminology, and to point out their importance for the future of tourism in the EU and in Poland. The author analyses the proposal of the European Commission for a directive of the European Parliament and of the Council on package travel and assisted travel arrangements of 9 July 2013, and the European Parliament legislative resolution of 12 March 2014, with relevant documents applied in the legislative proceedings by EU institutions and the Polish organs. The article presents the issues of maximum nature of the projected directive and its still undecided scope. It also signals difficulties and consequences concerning imprecise terms used in that project. The author expresses his conviction that the discussed directive will be accepted by the European Parliament and the Council not earlier than in 2015, while the first positive outcomes of these regulations for tourism in the EU and Poland will be perceivable after the implementation of the directive by the EU member states, probably not earlier than in the second half of 2017.

The key aim of this article is to provide an interdisciplinary look at tourism and its diachronic textual threads bequeathed by the ‘proto-tourist’ texts of the Greek travel author Pausanias. Using the periegetic, travel texts from his voluminous Description of Greece (2nd century CE) as a springboard for our presentation, we intend to show how the textual strategies employed by Pausanias have been received and still remain at the core of contemporary series of travel guides first authored by Karl Baedeker (in the 19th century). After Baedeker, Pausanias’ textual travel tropes, as we will show, still inform the epistemology of modern-day tourism; the interaction of travel texts with travel information and distribution channels produces generic hybrids, and the ancient Greek travel authors have paved the way for the construction of networks, digital storytelling and global tourist platforms.

The article is dedicated to the problem of journalistic genres and travel discourse of Enlightenment age. As a material of research three travel reports of second half of XVIIIth. and the beginning of XIXth. centuries were analyzed. The author considers the speech genres features which are very complex and various. Apart from genre analysis the aspects of the picture of Silesia and its inhabitants were described. Silesia was portrayed in observed texts among other things as a land of great industry and economic success, both Catholic and Protestant faiths, remaining under foreign influence and furthermore, inhabited by smart, helpful and interesting people.The analyzed text show that the process of forming the jour-nalist genres is very complex and long–term. On the other hand the interesting place is always, regardless of the epoch, a good subject to write about. The versatile portrait of Silesia and its inhabitants confirms the great interest of foreign lands in the age of Enlightenment.

The article is an attempt to describe contemporary radio features focusing on the theme of travel. We point to different ways of talking about travel in this artistic radio form, through analysis and interpretation, we try to see how, and by which artistic devices, we can talk about worlds near and far, in a medium devoid of images. Our observations are based on listening to dozens of radio features created in recent years. We propose thematic categories for radio features, because the theme of travel is taken by the authors in various ways. In one case, the feature makers focus on the character of the traveler, in another on the journey itself. There are also programs presenting the journey as a kind of escape before war or terror. This diversity also applies to formal solutions. Radio features about travel are characterized by a large variety of stylistic, compositional and aesthetic features. We can also speak about the style of a particular artist, whose talent, sensitivity, ingenuity and aesthetics influence the style of individual programs about travel.
Artykuł jest próbą opisu współczesnych radiowych reportaży o tematyce podróżniczej. Wskazujemy na różne ujęcia podróży we wspomnianym gatunku oraz – analizując i interpretując wybrane audycje – staramy się zauważać, w jaki sposób i za pomocą jakich środków można w medium pozbawionym obrazu opowiadać o światach bliskich i dalekich. Swoje obserwacje oparłyśmy na wysłuchaniu kilkudziesięciu reportaży powstałych na przestrzeni ostatnich lat. Zaproponowałyśmy tematyczne kategorie podziału audycji, bowiem motyw podróży bywa podejmowany przez autorów w różny sposób. W jednym przypadku dziennikarze skupiają się na postaci podróżnika, w innym na samej podróży. Bywają również audycje przedstawiające podróż jako swoistą ucieczkę przed wojną czy terrorem. Wspomniana różnorodność dotyczy także formalnych rozwiązań. Radiowe reportaże podróżnicze cechuje duża różnorodność stylistyczna, kompozycyjna i estetyczna. Uprawnione jest także mówienie o osobliwości warsztatowej danego twórcy, którego talent, wrażliwość, pomysłowość i poczucie estetyki wpływają na styl konkretnej audycji podróżniczej.

In certain way, “displacement” refers to the change. It is the action of a body that moves from a certain space to another. In addition to its obvious physical implications, in the case of human displacement, there are also great subjective implications. In this way, displacement can be of other orders, as symbolic, metaphysical and mental, we can also consider even maturation as the displacement from one psychic state to another. In this case, the present work aims to analyze the different figurations of the concept of displacement present in the work: Displacement - A travelogue by Lucy Knisley, as well as the affiliation of the work to a narrative tradition perpetrated by authors who take the daily genre and the trip report as a means of subjective construction of reality, both in literature and in comics. In order to do so, will be used authors who studied the writing of female authors, having the travel narrative as a research horizon, such as Sonia Serrano and Miriam Adelman; as well as authors who focus on the specificities of the comic language that, under the aegis of “graphic novel”, engender an aesthetic construction that privileges the autobiographical narrative (Santiago Garcia and Hilarry Chute). We intend to highlight the richness that the comics bring to the symbolic construction of the genre “travel diary/narrative” through its peculiarities of self-representation.

Recreation is essential to an individual’s health, socialization and general well-being. It can be used to discover new talents. It should be noted that the recreation field recognizes the importance of physical activities in the lives of everyone and the benefits of sport participation for some, but it does not limit itself to sport in the delivery of leisure opportunities and services. This study was conducted to estimate the recreational value of parks in Addis Ababa. The study encompasses the analysis of the data collected from 180 randomly selected sample visitors of two parks selected purposely from Addis Ababa recreation sites. To measure the recreational economic benefits from the recreation site, Individual Travel Cost Method (ITCM) was employed. The ITCM was preferred to Zonal TCM in this study because of its statistical efficiency. In the selection of a model, the number of visits was truncated. To estimate the annual recreational values, the Truncated Negative Binomial model was employed and found Birr 18,239,782.05 and 19,389,895.00 for Hamle 19 and Future parks, respectively per year. This study is limited only the recreational values of the two parks excluding other use values and non-use values of the sites. Further research is therefore recommended to estimate the total economic value of those sites.

W artykule omówiono rolę biur podróży w krajowych i zagranicznych podróżach Polaków oraz w przyjazdach turystów zagranicznych do Polski. Pokazano, jak dynamicznie zmieniała się w ostatnich latach sytuacja na rynku biur podróży i ich udział w organizowaniu wyjazdów turystów polskich w kraju i za granicę oraz przyjazdów turystów zagranicznych. W pierwszej części omówiono sposób organizacji krótkookresowych i długookresowych podróży Polaków w latach 2002-2012 oraz sposób organizacji podróży zagranicznych w latach 2004-2012. Przedstawiono również 29 największych touroperatorów w 2012 roku wysyłających turystów za granicę. W części drugiej artykułu omówiono rolę biur podróży w przyjazdach turystów zagranicznych do Polski. Pokazano organizację podróży i pobytu turystów zagranicznych przyjeżdżających do Polski w latach 1999-2012. W ostatniej części podsumowano rok 2012 i przedstawiono perspektywy rozwoju biur podróży na 2013 rok.
In her article, the author discussed the role of travel agencies in Poles’ domestic and foreign travels as well as in foreign tourists’ arrivals to Poland. She showed how dynamically there had been changing the situation in the market for travel agencies and their share in organising travels of Polish tourists in the country and abroad as well as foreign tourists arrivals. In the first part, she discussed the way of organising short-term and long-term trips being made by Poles in the years 2002-2012 as well as the way of organising travels abroad in the years 2004-2012. There were also presented 29 largest tourist operators in 2012 sending tourists abroad. In the second part of the article, the author presented the role of travel agencies in foreign tourists’ arrivals to Poland. There were presented organisation of the travel and stay of foreign tourists arriving to Poland in the years 1999-2012. In the last part, the author summarised the year 2012 and presented perspectives for development of travel agencies for the year 2013.

Travel demand models are required by transportation planners to predict the travel behaviour of people with different socio-economic characteristics. Travel behaviour of students act as an essential component of travel demand modelling. This behaviour is reflected in the educational activity travel pattern, the timing, sequence and mode of travel of students. Roads in the vicinity of schools are adversely affected during the school opening and closing hours. It enhances the traffic congestion, emission and safety problems around schools. It is necessary to improve the safety of school going children by understanding the present travel behaviour and to develop efficient sustainable traffic management measures to reduce congestion in the vicinity of schools. It is possible only if the travel behaviour of educational activities are studied. This travel behaviour is complex in nature and lot of uncertainty exists. Selection of modelling technique is very important for modelling the complex travel behaviour of students. This leads to the importance of application of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques in this area. AI techniques are highly developed in twenty first century due to the advancements in computer, big data and theoretical understanding. It is proved in the literature that these techniques are suitable for modelling the human behaviour. However, it has not been used in behaviourally oriented activity based modelling. This study is aimed to develop a model system to predict the daily travel behaviour of students using artificial intelligence technique, ANN. These ANN models were then compared with the conventional econometric models developed. It was observed that artificial intelligence models provide better results than econometric models in predicting the activity-travel behaviour of students. These models were further applied to study the variation in activity-travel behaviour, if short term travel-demand management measures like promoting walking for educational activities are implemented. Thus the study established that artificial intelligence can replace the conventional econometric methods for modelling the activity-travel behaviour of students. It can also be used for analysing the impact of short term travel demand management measures.

Opis:

Messina in the stories of Polish travelers over the course of centuries: the double face of the city – The article presents Messina’s ‘verbal postcards’ left by Polish participants in the Grand Tour and travelers who visited Sicily in later times. Travelers whose accounts are widely known, such as Anonymous (1595), Michał Borch, Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz, Chrystian Kamsetzer (XVIII c.), Zygmunt Krasiński (nineteenth century), but also less well-known ones such as writer Zofia Sokołowska, arriving in Sicily in the tragic year of the earthquake (1908), left descriptions from their stays in Messina about the emotional charge they felt, one closely related to the historical moment in which they arrived on the island. This will therefore be a thorough analysis of a fragment of the Sicilian journey concerning Messina left by some Polish travelers, taking into account their professions, areas of interest and the period in which they were in Sicily.

The article is devoted to the diaries of Jan Czekanowski, an outstanding Polish anthropologist, who travelled to Africa in the years 1907–1909. Special attention is given here to the narrator’s attitudes. Czekanowski knew Africa primarily as an anthropologist and traveller. He perceived the process of colonization as a weave of economic, political and ideological motives. He was also indignant with colonial exploitation, which he observed mainly in Belgian colonies. However, Czekanowski’s portrait of Africa evokes the concept of orientalism, as defined by Edward W. Said. Its prominent aspect was perceiving the Other through the binary opposition between the East and West. Moreover, in spite of his declared affection for black Africans, the Polish scholar uses Orientalistic and colonial stereotypes which seem consistent with the nineteenth-century trends in travel literature.

Elizabeth Grant began writing as a young girl, and, with her sisters, wrote short stories which were published in well-known journals of the period. Her writing provided a necessary income throughout her life. She kept a journal, wrote sketches, travel articles, and short stories, but in Scotland, her best-known work is Memoirs of a Highland Lady, which was first published in 1898 and after several editions remains popular. This paper considers her writing about the Highlands, Ireland and France to examine the creation and performance of her identity as a Highland Lady.

Subject and purpose of work: The contemporary labour market in Poland is characterised by a large scale of migration of people, caused by the desire to find a good job. This situation is facilitated by the possibility of free movement within the European Union. The purpose of this study is to present the concept of migration, its types, causes and effects. Statistics related to the labour migration of Poles are also presented. The subject of the study is the migration activity of Poles abroad. The obtained data are presented using the descriptive method and graphical methods. Materials and methods: National literature and statistical data were used during the work on the research problem. Results: Statistics showing the scale of the migration phenomenon in Poland are presented. The research period covered the years 2013-2018. Conclusions: Over the period under consideration, the number of Poles travelling abroad for work purposes decreased. This may be due to the decreasing number of unemployed people and the lower unemployment rate in Poland. At the same time, an increasing number of job offers in the national labour market can be observed.
Przedmiot i cel pracy: Współczesny rynek pracy w Polsce charakteryzuje się dużą skalą migracji ludzi, spowodowanej pragnieniem znalezienia dobrej pracy. Sytuacji tej sprzyja możliwość swobodnego przemieszczenia się po obszarze Unii Europejskiej. Celem niniejszego opracowania jest przedstawienie pojęcia migracji, jej rodzajów oraz przyczyn i skutków. Zaprezentowano również statystyki związane z migracją zarobkową Polaków. Przedmiotem badań jest aktywność migracyjna Polaków za granicą. Uzyskane dane zaprezentowano za pomocą metody opisowej i metod graficznych. Materiały i metody: Podczas pracy nad problemem badawczym wykorzystano krajową literaturę oraz dane statystyczne. Wyniki: Przytoczone zostały dane statystyczne obrazujące skalę zjawiska migracji w Polsce. Okres badań objął lata 2013-2018. Wnioski: Na przestrzeni badanego okresu spadła liczba wyjazdów Polaków w celach zarobkowych za granicę. Może to być spowodowane zmniejszającą się liczbą osób bezrobotnych oraz niższą stopą bezrobocia w Polsce. Jednocześnie zauważyć można coraz większą liczbę ofert pracy na krajowym rynku pracy.

The aim of this study is to investigate the potential of the Polish market for the development of the supply-side of controversial forms of tourism, based on the opinions and products offered by tour operators and retail travel agents. Analytical data were collected using desk research and CATI (N=107) methods. The most common controversial types of tourism include drug and sex tourism, followed by disaster tourism, medical tourism, slum tourism, fan tourism and poverty tourism. The expectations of customers regarding tourism offers usually focus on party tourism and extreme travel, and the providers highlight that this market segment will continue to develop.

Opis:

The author of the article discusses in a chronological order the literature on Iceland written in Polish starting from the seventeenth-century account of the journey to the island by Daniel Vetter. Most attention is devoted to the accounts created in the second half of the twentieth (reports by Lucjan Wolanowski and Polish sailors) and at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Recent publications are largely based on blog experiences. In quantitative as well as qualitative terms, we observe the perspective of changing the geographical and cultural imagination of Polish literature at the beginning of the 21st century: within the North-South axis one can notice the recently emerging diagonal axis linking Poland with Iceland. It is worth examining this issue in more detail in a while.

This study examined the travel behawior of commercial public transport passengers in Lagos State, Nigeria. The descriptive research survey was used in order to assess the opinions of the respondents using the questionnaire. A total of 84 samples were used as representative population, while two null hypotheses were formulated and tested using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient at 0.05 level of significant. The results that were obtained indicated that a positive correlation exists between frequency of travel and commuters income in Lagos Metropolis and also that a positive correlation exists between frequency of travel and distance covered by commuters in Lagos Metropolis. Secondary data was also sourced to serve as complement to the primary data, thus allowing for a robust research. Descriptive statistical tools such as percentages were also adopted to present the socio-economic characteristics in the area. Findings showed that about 57% of sampled population are male, 62 % are civil servants, 48% of respondents travel for business purposes. Also, that majority of the respondents (50%) said that the commercial public transport is highly prone to accident, while about 64% of the respondents commute on daily basis. It was established that lack of transport infrastructure coupled with poor road maintenance were seen as the leading causes of inaccessibility of the area.

The premise of this text is to analyze by means of selected examples the issues related to the broad definition of security, and modern and developing terrorist migration. Moreover, the aim of this paper is to approach the subject in question from the perspective of the current legal state by means of the formal and dogmatic method, but also by means of the method of criticism and analysis of the literature, which will allow a full understanding of the shape, functioning and causes of errors of modern security bodies. The above will influence the formulation of de lege ferenda postulates in the conclusion. The European Union is based on solid foundations. So how does globalisation, in its broadest sense, affect the world around us and the elementary values of the modern world? Modern terrorism, which strikes at the security of developed countries, is undoubtedly a global phenomenon that also sows fear for normal existence in one’s own country. Unrestricted, cross-border terrorist activity is leading to intra-community division. This is the result of internal conflicts over common values. The surveillance and detection of migrants from outside the European community who are criminals is becoming a more difficult task with time. This is due to the fact that terrorist organisations operate according to a well-defined plan, creating extensive networks and recruiting new members for their groups in many countries simultaneously. The fight against terrorism is being waged on Europe’s streets and in the homes and schools of its citizens. The struggle for security begins at the borders of European countries. What is crucial in this fight is the latest equipment and cooperation between security bodies, including the special services of all the countries of the European Union and NATO. It is essential to introduce appropriate legislation to limit the free movement of people who commit crimes and to develop methods to distinguish terrorists from economic migrants or refugees. The state must guarantee the security of its citizens and combat terrorism effectively.

Opis:

In recent years adverse processes of suburbanization have been observed in cities. It has become a serious challenge for urban and transport planners, as it influences largely the quality of space, the quality of life, and the cost of running the city. This paper is dedicated to travel models in areas serviced by a railway system, and is based on a real-life survey example of the Błonie community, a district belonging to the Warsaw metropolitan area. Research carried out in 2014 focused on combined travels behaviors recorded using GPS locators as well as quantitative research (volumes of users across various transport systems).
Referat poświęcono modelom podróży w obszarach obsługiwanych koleją a jako poligon doświadczalny wybrano gminę Błonie będącą częścią Obszaru Metropolitarnego Warszawy (OMW). W referacie przedstawiono wyniki badań wykonanych w roku 2014 w godzinach szczytu porannego, w szczególności: badania funkcjonowania przystanków kolejowych i autobusowych, badania ilościowe (natężenia użytkowników w poszczególny systemach transportowych) oraz szczegółowe badania podróży złożonych z wykorzystaniem lokalizatorów GPS.

Badania preferencji i zachowań komunikacyjnych mieszkańców powinny być reprezentatywne. W artykule przedstawiono podstawowe uwarunkowania ich reprezentatywności, koncentrując się na określonych problemach metodologicznych i organizacyjnych. W celu uzyskania reprezentatywnych wyników badań należy zastosować losowy dobór próby. Najwyższą efektywnością statystyczną cechują się próby warstwowe. Prawidłowe przeprowadzenie doboru losowego warstwowego napotyka na barierę uzyskania odpowiedniej listy badanej populacji, z której odbyłoby się losowanie. Mając na uwadze problemy związane z pozyskaniem próby losowej w drodze losowania z listy ludności, do doboru próby wykorzystuje się technikę random route. Istnieją jednak wątpliwości co do możliwości uzyskania reprezentatywnej próby w wyniku jej zastosowania. Z punktu widzenia reprezentatywności badań preferencji i zachowań transportowych mieszkańców fundamentalne znaczenie ma też wybór metody badawczej. Ze względu na obszerność i złożoność problematyki tych badań, odpowiednią metodą jest wywiad indywidualny. W jej stosowaniu występują jednak określone problemy. Problemem w badaniach preferencji i zachowań transportowych mieszkańców jest też zakres uwzględnienia podróży pieszych. Cenne doświadczenie w dążeniu do uzyskania reprezentatywności badań preferencji i zachowań transportowych mieszkańców ma Zarząd Komunikacji Miejskiej w Gdyni. W praktyce realizacji badań przez tę jednostkę występują konkretne problemy. Istnieje możliwość zmniejszenia skutków występowania określonych problemów w drodze odpowiedniej współpracy organizatora badań z zatrudnioną przez niego firmą badawczą.
The marketing research on travel preferences and behaviour of the city inhabitants should be representative. In the article the basic conditions of their representativeness, especially methodological and organizational problems, are introduced. In order to obtain reach representative results of the research random sampling should be applied. The highest statistical effectiveness gives the stratified sample. The correct stratified sampling meets the barrier in getting a proper list of population in which the random sampling would be applied. Taking into account that problem the technics of random route is used in sampling. There are some serious doubts related to the question if sampling in such a way is representative. In the reference to the research representativeness fundamental importance has also the choice of research method. Due to extensiveness and complexity of the research individual interview is the appropriate method. There are some problems in proper use of that method. A challenge of the research is also including range of pedestrian travels. Valuable experiences in the research on travel behaviour and preferences has Zarząd Komunikacji Miejskiej w Gdyni (Public Transport Authority in Gdynia) although this organization is affected by different difficulties. Those experiences are presented in the article. The main practical problems as well as the possibility to reduce negative results are discussed in the paper.

The article discusses the situation in the Polish market in guarantee, bank guarantee and insurance contracts for travel agencies in 2005-2015, Poland’s legal framework, for which was created by way of the Act on Travel Services of August 1997, as amended, laying down the conditions for the provision by traders of travel services in the territory of Poland and abroad, where contracts with customers for the provision of such services are concluded in Poland. The Act imposes on travel agencies, both on tourism organisers and intermediaries, an obligation to provide security. In 2005-2015, the number of operators taking out compulsory security increased from 1,300 to more than 3,800. In 2014, the total value of guarantee amounts of the twenty largest travel agencies was PLN 740.9 million. The guarantee amounts varied widely between travel agencies. The highest guarantee amount was PLN 200.5 million. In general, the value of guarantee contracts and insurance contracts is sufficient. In 2012, for three travel agencies insurance guarantee funds proved insufficient to cover the cost of repatriation of tourists, therefore the marshals of voivodships covered the missing amounts from the local government (voivodship) budgets – a total of PLN 450,600.
Artykuł omawia sytuację na polskim rynku gwarancji, gwarancji bankowych, gwarancji ubezpieczeniowych i umów ubezpieczeniowych dla biur podróży w latach 2005-2015, polskie ramy prawne, dla którego zostały stworzone w drodze Ustawy o usługach turystycznych z sierpnia 1997 r. wraz z późniejszymi zmianami, tworząc warunki do świadczenia przez przedsiębiorców usług turystycznych na obszarze Polski i za granicą, gdy umowy z klientami o świadczenie takich usług zostały zawarte w Polsce. Ustawa nakłada na biura podróży, zarówno na organizatorów turystyki, jak i pośredników, obowiązek zapewniania bezpieczeństwa. W latach 2005-2015 liczba operatorów zawierających obowiązkowe ubezpieczenia zwiększyła się z 1 300 do ponad 3 800. W roku 2014 ogólna wartość kwot gwarancyjnych dwudziestu największych biur podróży wyniosła 740,9 mln złotych. Kwoty gwarancji znacznie się różniły między biurami podróży. Najwyższa kwota gwarancji wyniosła 200,5 mln PLN. Generalnie wartość umów gwarancyjnych i umów ubezpieczeniowych jest niedostateczna. W roku 2012 w przypadku trzech biur podróży fundusze gwarancji ubezpieczeniowych okazały się niewystarczające, by pokryć koszty powrotu do kraju turystów, wobec czego marszałkowie województw pokryli brakujące kwoty z budżetów samorządów lokalnych na kwotę ogółem w wysokości 450 600 PLN.

Opis:

Background. People have travelled for treatment-related purposes for a long time. Every year, the demand for such trips increases. The market of travelling because of one’s health is a growing sector of the tourism economics. Poland is a country with a strong potential medicine-wise and may expand its capabilities with proper resource management (legal changes, personnel education, implementing new technologies and global promotion). One of the factors that encourages tourists to come to Poland are the prices of medical procedures – much lower than in other countries in Europe and worldwide. Material and methods. The study included individuals aged 18 to 56 from seven countries: Poland, Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, United Kingdom, Norway and Italy. A diagnostic survey and the questionnaire technique were used. Results. Poland is visited by tourists of different age and their interest in the travels still grows. Contemporary medical tourism offers a wide range of services and each person (not only the actually ill) may explore them. The main purpose of the travels is health improvement, but there are also arguments regarding “changing oneself,” relaxation and escaping civilization. The examined persons express their dissatisfaction with the state of the buildings at which they stayed during their treatments and personnel preparedness. Conclusions. Medical tourism in Poland needs to undergo some changes to have a chance of developing on a global scale. Poland is an EU country with low prices of procedures and a high level of medicine.

The article presents the accounts of Polish diarists’ overseas travels (16th–17th century), which include descriptions of parks and gardens. The authors: Mikołaj Krzysztof Radziwiłł “Sierotka” and Karol Stanisław Radziwiłł, Krzysztof Zawisza, Jan Ocieski, Teodor Billewicz, Maciej Rywocki, and others marvelled at the impressive gardens and bestiaries in France, Italy, Spain and the Holy Land. In the travellers’ accounts – diverse in terms of their attention to detail – there appeared descriptions of gardens, their location and arrangement, together with some opinions and evaluations made by the authors. What drew their particular attention and admiration were magnificent fountains, exotic plants and animals.

This article presents the results of empirical research on the labour market of city travel guides, regional guides and mountain guides as well as tour leaders. The aim of this article is to evaluate the demand for the services of travel guides and tour leaders. The study included tourism entrepreneurs and the method of a diagnostic survey with the use of computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI) was applied. The obtained results confirmed the thesis that the labour market of travel guides and tour leaders is not stable and this is due to the seasonality, level of earnings and changing model of travel organization. The study also showed that in the five-year period from the deregulation of the professions, the market relations between travel guides and tour leaders on the one hand and tourism entrepreneurs on the other did not undergo fundamental changes. The results of the study may be useful for tour operators, organisations associating travel guides and tour leaders as well as for tourism administration at the central and regional level.

“Not so much reportage as confession of love” – about the tendency to idealize Georgian culture in contemporary Polish travel reportage After 2008, Georgian culture has become the subject of many Polish travel reportages. It is idealized, resulting from the need to reproduce the myth of PolishGeorgian friendship. This myth arose from Russophobia existing in Poland and Georgia. Two of the three narratives studied are strongly Russophobic. The analysis of the content of the reports was carried out in reference to the model of cultural differences by G. Hofstede.

Opis:

Travel is one of the most popular items people tend to be comfortable with purchasing over the Internet. Hypertext is a form of electronic text composed of blocks of words (or images) linked electronically by multiple paths, chains, or trails. This study explores the importance of hypertext in the travel destination choice from websites. Results show that hypertext links containing images of destinations, informative texts, and search tools are the three most important features utilized by tourist website browsers. This study aims to offer insights into new areas for further research on tourism websites design, application and evaluation.

Introduction and aim. With the development of transportation facilities and options, people can now travel easily. With women having a greater presence in the workforce, pregnant women can work until the eighth week before childbirth. This study was conducted to examine the behaviors of pregnant women regarding travel. Material and methods. The data for this cross-sectional and descriptive study were collected from 519 pregnant women who voluntarily participated in the research and met the research criteria. The data were analyzed using the SPSS 24 software package. Results. The average age of the participating pregnant women was 27.49±0.17, with 63.8% residing in urban areas, 74.8% being primiparous, and 47.6% being in the third trimester of pregnancy. A decrease in travel and car usage during pregnancy. The use of bus, train/tram/metro, taxi, bicycle/scooter, and motorcycle decreased during pregnancy, while use of car, plane, and ship/ferry increased. 81.9% of women always wore a seat belt during pregnancy. There was a statistically significant difference between the educational level of women and their car usage (p<0.005). It was found that women wore seat belts more frequently in the third trimester. As the number of pregnancies increased, the frequency of seat belt usage decreased. Conclusion. A decrease in the frequency of travel was observed among women during pregnancy. The levels of seat belt usage and correct seat belt fastening were unsatisfactory.

The present paper focuses on the travel notes by Michel Vieuchange (1904-1930), a young Frenchman who decided to reach Smara, a holy Muslim city located in the middle of the desert, to describe it, and to e term used by Michel Collot means telling your life through the places that has affected you. In the case of Vieuchange’s notes the geographical descriptions intervene with the description of the personality of the traveler and form a whole. The paper shows that three cities, Tiznit, Tigilit and Smara, mark three stages of the travel and correspond to different aspects of Vieuchange’s personality.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the effectiveness of the EU Package Travel Directive during the COVID-19 pandemic. First, the paper depicts the legal regime under Council Directive 90/314/EEC of 13 June 1990 on package travel, package holidays and package tours as well as Directive (EU) 2015/2302 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 25 November 2015 on package travel and linked travel arrangements. The comparison of both EU Package Travel Directives shows both some similarities and differences from the perspective of travellers’ rights. Furthermore, the paper offers justification of the actions taken by the EU Member States in the face of COVID-19 pandemic, using the EU report on the application of the 2015 Package Travel Directive. Finally, the paper exhibits case law relating to tourism that evolved as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic. The reported cases are pending before the Court of Justice of the European Union, which means that all EU Member States are still waiting for the final judgement. The author supports the views presented by Advocate General Laila Medina and strongly believes that the protection of tourists will be continued.

Celem artykułu jest systematyzacja wiedzy współczesnych badaczy studiujących gatunki prozy wędrownej. Skupiono się na wyodrębnieniu bazowych cech charakterystycznych trawelogu przy porównaniu go z wyróżnikami innych gatunków, w których dominuje obraz wędrówki (eseje, przewodniki, szkice i in.). Wskazano różnice między literaturą wędrowną i geograficzną. Wydzielenie wspólnych i typowych cech różnych gatunków prozy wędrownej jest niezbędne do systematyzacji gatunków pokrewnych oraz rozumienia odmienności między nimi.
The purpose of the article is to systematize the experience of modern scholars who study the genres of travel literature. The focus is on determining the basic characteristics of travelogues in comparison to the genre features of other genres containing travel (essay, feature, guidebook, etc.). The difference between travel and geographical literature has been clarified. To distinguish between similar genres and understand the differences between them, it is necessary to identify the common and peculiar features of different genres of travel literature.

W artykule omówiony został planer podróży budowany w ramach realizacji projektu Green Travelling dofinansowanego w programie ERA-NET Transport III Future Travelling. Planer ten wyróżnia duża liczba uwzględnio-nych sposobów podróżowania, w tym realizacji łańcuchów przemieszczeń z zastosowaniem transportu indywidualnego i zbiorowego, a także możliwość analizy i zestawienia realizacji podróży w różny sposób wykorzystując wiele kryteriów porównawczych. Z uwagi na zaimplementowane możliwości omawiany planer może pełnić rolę informacyjną i promować rozwiązania proekologiczne dla systemu transportowego na wybranym obszarze.
The article discussed a travel planner built within the project Green Travelling funded by ERA-NET Transport Travelling Future III. Planner is distinguished by the large number of included ways to travel, including the implementation travel chains using individual and public transport, as well as the ability to analyze and compilation of travel solutions in different ways using many benchmark criteria. Due to the implemented possibilities discussed planner can act as an information and promote environmentally-friendly solutions for the transport system in the selected area.

The purpose of the study was to analyze the role of the Renaissance in Poland and the way it is reflected in tourists’ reviews. The authors focused in particular on tourists’ awareness concerning the importance of three major Renaissance landmarks located in three Polish cities, namely the Wawel Royal Castle in Cracow, the Town Hall in Poznań and the Old Town in Zamość. Methods used in the empirical part include an analysis of reviews posted on the TripAdvisor website by Polish tourists who have visited these sites, taking into account the historical conditions underlying the development of the Renaissance in Poland and its characteristic features. The authors used the desk research method. The pilot study described in the article is an introduction to further, in-depth qualitative research. The results indicate that only 10% of all tourists’ reviews referred to the Renaissance character of the sites. The reviews indicate that most tourists lack a solid knowledge of history and architecture, and were most likely not inspired to visit the analyzed sites because of their links to the Renaissance. No reviews were found demonstrating any personal background in history or suggesting that the Renaissance was the reason for visiting these particular sites. So far, references to the Renaissance in tourists’ reviews of Polish landmarks have not been discussed in the literature. The article can, therefore, be regarded as a first contribution to the study of this issue.

The article presents an outline of European touristic policy and the role of tourism sector in European economy. Statistical data show the importance of European tourism as the number one tourist destination worldwide. Institutions of EU involved with tourism (such as the European Parliament – Committee on Transport and Tourism, the European Commission – DG Enterprise and Industry: Tourism section) shall put more emphasis on some specific issues as there is no specific tourism policy and development programmes in this matter. An urgent consideration must be given to a proper touristic service marketing by enhancing promotion programs, taking patterns from successful experiences of other countries, using modern marketing tools taking inspiration from new emerging tourism markets worldwide. The author shows the possibilities and prospects that internal market gives to the tourism of Member States. Community actions and measures are aimed at strengthening the position of European tourism. Moreover challenges and opportunities of European compared to world tourism are described.

From "Daniel ou Israël" (1987) through "Noir" (2000) and "Une Belge méchante" (2007) and as far as to "La séduction des hommes tristes" (2010) Françoise Lalande’s narratives aspire to give account of the history of human kind, not limited by any specific time or space. In her works, Europe’s history is mixed with history of the world, social with political history, the ancient one describing fate of the Jews with present times, giving account of the events happening before our eyes. The author, convinced of writer’s necessary involvement, reacts to all signs of injustice and brutality so characteristic for the 20th century’s history. Lalande tells us how to live the history playing, according to the author, a key role in creation of our identity. Something that she, as a Jew herself and citizen of the world, is fully aware of.

The present article analyzes the chapters XVII and XVIII of the Breve relación de la peregrinación que ha hecho de la mayor parte del mundo don Pedro Cubero Sebastián, concerning the Aragonese missionary´s visit to Poland, in the light of the travel narrative theory. Taking into consideration the fundamental characteristics of the genre we focus on the documentary value of the book, as well as on the organization of its discourse. Paying attention to the geographic coordinates and descriptions of the places visited by the traveler, we present the detailed map of his route. We also concentrate on the country’s and its inhabitants’ image, that spreads throughout the book, in order to compare it with testimonies of the epoch and historical documents concerning the political situation in the Kingdom of Poland in the second half of the seventeenth century. Additionaly, we note the nuclei around which the author organizes the narrative material and clarify the role of these episodes in his relation.

Mario Puccini between Italy and Argentina – The Italian writer Mario Puccini travelled to Argentina in 1936 to attend the Pen Club Congress. In the essay, the results of Puccini’s stay in Argentina are studied for the first time in Italy: books, stories, articles, translations, correspondences, unrealized projects. Presentism usually holds that only present entities exist. In contrast to presentism, eternalism holds that past, present, and future entities all exist. According to some philosophers, presentism is intuitively incompatible with time travel. In this paper, I defend the compatibility between presentism and time travel by arguing for a plausible account of causation in the presentist framework. To achieve my goal, I respond to an objection to presentist time travel that is based on the nonexistence of the past: the Causation Objection. According to the Causation Objection, causal relations between objects at different times are necessary for time travel, but these are impossible for presentists. I evaluate a possible reply based on a non-relational account of causation and show that this reply is not satisfying. Subsequently, I put forward a fact-based account of causal relation. I argue that presentists could accept facts instead of events as causal relata, thus establishing causal relations. As all facts about the past, the present, and the future exist in the present, we could explain how backward causation works and describe the discrepancy between personal time and external time in presentist time travel; in this way, I argue, we could vindicate the compatibility between presentism and time travel.

Przedmiotem analizy jest niepublikowany tekst odczytu radiowego orientalisty Tadeusza Kowalskiego, dotyczący jego podróży naukowej do Turcji w 1927 r. Przechowywany w Oddziale Archiwum PAU w Krakowie rękopis liczy 26 kart i został bardzo starannie opracowany stylistycznie i edytorsko przez samego autora. Celem artykułu jest prezentacja tego wartościowego literaturoznawczo i kulturowo tekstu oraz udowodnienie, że jest on z punktu widzenia genologii reportażem. Wśród cech przesądzających o przynależności gatunkowej odczytu wyróżniono: aktualność, autentyzm, osobisty stosunek reportera do przedmiotu, fabularyzację oraz użycie języka artystycznego. Podkreślono również podwójnie kulturotwórczą rolę reportażu Kowalskiego: słuchaczom dostarczył rzetelnej i podanej z dużą dawką humoru wiedzy na temat międzywojennej Turcji (wciąż rolę tę może odgrywać, jeśli zostanie udostępniony szerszej publiczności), a biografom i badaczom spuścizny Kowalskiego ukazuje inne oblicze przedstawianego zazwyczaj posągowo uczonego.
The object of the analysis is an unpublished text of a radio lecture written by orientalist Tadeusz Kowalski, concerning his scientific journey to Turkey in 1927. The manuscript, which is stored at the Archive of Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences (PAU) in Cracow, consists of 26 pages and had been very carefully edited by the author personally. The aim of this article is to present this valuable text in terms of literary and cultural studies and to prove its reportage genology. The features that determine the genre of the lecture include: actuality, authenticity, the reporter’s personal attitude to the subject, fictionalisation and the use of artistic language. The double culture-forming role of Kowalski’s reportage was also underlined. Firstly, the reportage provided the audience with reliable and humorously presented knowledge about interwar Turkey (it can still fulfil this role once it is available to the wider public). Secondly, it shows a different face of the usually formally portrayed scholar.

Opis:

The paper analyses a number of advanced mobile information technologies in the sphere of tourism. A large volume of information has been processed to determine the main areas of development and improvement of tourism mobile information technologies. Mobile information technologies are built both for tourists and for travel agencies. In this paper, information technologies for individual tourists are laid stress on. These are tourist program guides, augmented reality tourist information systems, gamification traveling systems, tourist location based systems and others. The paper offers description of the available mobile software for trip planning and information support of tourists during a trip. It consists of two chapters: the current studies and existing mobile program algorithmic tools. According to the research outcomes, the authors propose to build a new information system for tourists Mobile Tourist Information Assistant. A set of functional features of this system as an integrated information system relying on mobile applications is proposed. The main principle of the system is EVERYTHING, HERE AND NOW.

The purpose of this paper is to study perceptions of India in three literary works, from the 20th and 21st century. The first part looks into the tenets of postcolonial theory and literary imagology as a possible methodological framework. Subsequently, premodern perceptions of India in the Croatian literary and cultural space are summarised. The central analysis focuses on the historical novelJaša Dalmatin (Jaša Dalmatin, Viceroy of Gujarat) by Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić, the travelogue U potrazi za staklenim gradom (In Search of the Glass City) by Željko Malnar and Borna Bebek, and the short story Indija (India) by Bekim Sejranović. The analysis demonstrates that each of these writings reconstructs premodern perceptions to some extent, but primarily introduces new perceptions that are linked to the specific social, cultural and ideological context in which these works were written. This indicates that literary perceptions are at the same time always acts of literary fiction as well as a socially and culturally construed production of meaning.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected not only the health of communities but also their daily practices and behaviors. The aim of the study was to investigate the attitudes and priorities of Turkish domestic tourists regarding post-COVID-19 travel. The priorities of female respondents with respect to service quality/prices were found to be significantly more affected by the pandemic than those of males while male respondents had significantly higher expectations regarding the response of tourism businesses than females. With increasing age and decreasing income levels, respondents were significantly more likely to be concerned about the risk associated with travelling and their priorities concerning service quality/prices were more likely to be affected by the pandemic situation. Respondents with low levels of education were significantly more likely to declare a shift in priorities and had higher expectations regarding the response of tourism businesses compared with the rest of the sample. The author also considers the implications of the study for tourism business managers and researchers.

This paper discusses selected word formation aspects in Kasimir Edschmid’s diary describing his travels across Europe. The aim of the paper is to present derivatives, compounds and acronyms from several chapters in the discussed work. The answers to the following questions are sought: What structures can be found among derivatives and compounds? What semantic groups can be distinguished in the corpus under scrutiny? What other properties characterize the analysed vocabulary? The group of adjectival derivatives is more numerous than that of noun derivatives. The set of compounds contains frequent examples of compounds with a proper noun as the first segment. Acronyms are very rare. Other features of the examined vocabulary include, among others, hybrid formations and foreign terms.

Opis:

The role of TTI is an effective supporting the use of transport network for example, in order to improve the capacity and to shorten travel time, delays, fuel consumption. In the time of increasing traffic congestion on the road network, especially on EU freight corridors and in cities, the RDS-TMC deliver the alternatives and it facilitate traveller information by providing powerful travel planning tools. Establishing a national RDS-TMC system is the goal for Poland not only because approaching EURO 2012 but mainly to join to other European countries and as they enjoy the benefits of TMC service. All actions must be supported by the agreement of all players in the information chain which creating the TMC service: ministerial bodies, civil/public services, public road authorities, public broadcasters, road users and industry. Only clear and transparency system of responsibility for maintenance and overseeing could guarantee the high reliability and correct work of TMC service.

Beginning with the middle of the nineteenth century, Bucharest was the hub of an emerging nation-state, finally turning into the capital city of a kingdom (in the century’s last quarter). This advancement implied the necessity for the town to adapt to a new status and to represent Romania before the world. To this end, broad-based investment projects were necessary; in the first place, the city had to be bestowed with edifices of public institutions. The forms of these buildings, and the designs of grand boulevards, were primarily rooted in the fascination with Paris of the time of Prefect Haussmann. Foreigners’ accounts of Bucharest testify to the image of a ‘Little Paris’ getting anchored at the time. However, the premises for this nickname are traceable in earlier period: an elitist snobbery about ‘Parisian’ salon life was taking shape in the early nineteenth century, whereas the incipient national ideas fell back on the French revolutionary tradition. The overwhelming French influence on the local elites finally raised increasing resistance as potentially damaging to the Romanian identity. This turn triggered certain political as well as architectural projects that were supposed to bring the country’s modern life to its presumed roots or ‘authentic’ tradition.

The Grand Tour played an important role in the education of the aristocratic British youth. Several requirements served for its classical qualification. The Tour lasted from some months to some years. Travelers' individual choices, spread of diseases, priority to special places, as well as historical events shaped the travel plan. The Tour changed its classical denotation in the 19th century, reflecting a radical social transformation in the British society. The middle class would be engaged in travelling beyond the borders of the British territory. The Romantic traveler of the 19th century diefrers from the classic traveler of the Grand Tour, stressing heroism and bravery, avoiding scenic descriptions. These travelers resembled the explorer. A term introduced by the Romantics. The dense narrative produced in this period would permit the British public to become familiar with unalike people, experiences, and lands. There are five travellers that visited the Albanian land in the first half of 19th century, during British Romanticims. Dodwell, Hughes, Martin Leake, Urquhart and Best published works mentioning the Albania theme, people, culture, nature, geography. Dodwell's work is significant because of classical archeology. T.S. Hughes gives information about Ali Pasha and his mystical figure. Topographical data on the Albanian population, customs, and traditions are introduced in Leake's book. Urquhart looks at the Orient from a philosophical viewpoint. A work about hunting, natural beauty, customs, traditions is wrietn by Best. Therefore, their books give essential information about the country in the first half of this century. Richard Lassels in the book Travels in Italy first mentions the term Grand Tour in 1670 (p.6). A century later, Paul Kirby (1952) informs the audience that the Grand Tour has become part of the young Europeans' education, any member coming from the nobility of the time (p. 2). The special VAT margin scheme for travel agents has its genesis in Art. 26 of the Sixth VAT Directive and now it is set out in Art. 306 to 310 of the Directive 2006/112. Where a travel agent, acting in his own name, uses the supplies and services of other taxable persons in the provision of travel facilities, all the transactions are to be treated as a single supply, subject to VAT in the travel agent’s Member State. The taxable amount is deemed to be the travel agent’s margin – the difference between the VAT‑inclusive cost to him of the supplies and services which he includes in the package which he sells and the price, exclusive of VAT, which he charges for that package. Some Member States, including Poland, apply the special VAT margin scheme regardless of whether the customer is actually the traveller or not (the customer approach). The remaining Member States, first of all Germany, apply the margin scheme only where the customer is the traveller (the traveller approach). That is why, it is necessary to analyse the German provisions on the VAT margin scheme.

Przedmiotem artykułu jest opis zmian, jakie na przestrzeni wieków zaszły w obrębie literatury turystycznej i podróżniczej zarówno na świecie, jak i w Polsce. Literatura przewodnikowa i turystyczna, znana już w zasadzie od czasów starożytnych, znacznie zmieniła swoją formę i współcześnie jest kompendium wiedzy o wybranych kierunkach podróży i turystycznych regionach świata. W artykule przedstawiono również przykładowe definicje oraz typologie przewodników turystycznych, a także zwrócono uwagę na fakt, iż, mimo starożytnego rodowodu tego typu literatury, nie istnieją jednoznaczne kryteria pozwalające uznać wydawnictwo za przewodnik turystyczny. Znaczne różnice między dawnymi przewodnikami a wydawnictwami współczesnymi oraz zmiany ich formy, które miały miejsce na przestrzeni ostatnich kilkunastu wieków, są wynikiem z jednej strony różnych potrzeb ich użytkowników, z drugiej zaś – rozwoju wiedzy i technologii.
The subject of this paper is the description of the changes occurring across the ages in the field of travel and tourist literature in Poland and across the world. The guide books and tourist literature, in essence known since ancient times, changed their form significantly and contemporarily serve as a compendium of knowledge regarding selected travel destinations and tourism regions of the world. The paper also presents selected definitions and typology of tourist travel guides; the attention has also been drawn to the fact that despite the ancient heritage of this type of literature the unambiguous criteria enabling marking a publication as a tourist guide do not exist. The significant differences between the old guides and their modern counterparts as well as the changes in the form of guides occurring across the past few centuries are a result of various needs of readers on one hand and development of technology and knowledge on the other.

Artykuł przedstawia wyniki badań z zakresu rosyjsko-francuskich związków literackich na początku XIX wieku (podróże Rosjan do Francji, obraz Francji w rosyjskich podróżach dokumentalnych i literackich). Materiał do opracowania oparty jest na Listach Rosjanina podróżującego po Europie od 1802 do 1806 rok” Dmitrija Gorichwostowa (cz. 1-3, Moskwa 1808). Kontekstem interpretacyjnym jest podróżopisarstwo Nikołaja Karamzina (Listy podróżnika rosyjskiego) i Gorichwostowa (Zapiski Rosjanina podróżującego po Europie od 1824 do 1827 roku, 1831-1832). Twórczość Gorichwostowa omawiana jest z trzech punktów widzenia: 1. cele podróży do Francji i koncepcja podróżnika, 2. opis Francji (trasa podróży: Lille ‒ Reims ‒ Paryż: muzea, dzieła sztuki, architektura, miejsca związane z J.J. Rousseau, przyroda, zarys dziejów literatury francuskiej), 3. stosunek podróżnika do Francji.  
The paper presents the findings of the research in the field of the Russian and French literary connections in the early 19th century (travels of the Russians to France, the picture of Germany in the Russian documentary and literary travel). The material for the study is based on The Letters of the Russian Travelling across Europe from 1802 to 1806 by Dmitry Gorikhvostov (parts 1-3, Moscow 1808). The interpretive context is the travel literature by Nikolay Karamzin (The Letters of the Russian Traveller, ed. 1801) and Gorikhvostov (The Notes of Russian Travelling across Europe from 1824 to 1827, 1831-1832). The Gorikhvostov’s work is discussed from three perspectives: 1. the purposes of the travel to France and the concept of the traveller; 2. the description of France (travel itinerary: Lille ‒ Reims ‒ Paris – Fontainebleau – Ermenonville etc.: museums, artworks, architecture, places connected with J. J. Rousseau, nature; a short story of the French literature); 3. the traveller’s attitude to France.

Opis:

This paper concentrates on the ways in which exoticisms should be translated from Polish to Russian. We focus on the exoticisms used in Cesarz and Podróże z Herodotem by R. Kapuściński. In this text we stress the need to preserve the local cultural coloring of a given exoticism in the process of translation. Moreover, we notice that a unified definition of the term exoticism is necessary, and the lack thereof makes it more difficult to single out exoticisms from among other borrowings. We also touch upon the issue of the so-called third culture while our interest in it results from the very nature of travel essays, which often acquaint the readers with exotic cultural realities.

The purpose of this article is to attempt to reconstruct Jan Czekanowski’s researches conducted between April 1908 and April 1908 in the basin of the Uele River in Central Africa. The basis for reconstruction was the fragment of the original, hitherto unpublished manuscript, Diary of the anthropologicalethnological column of the expedition to Central Africa in the years 1907–1909, written according to the requirements of the organisers during the expedition. This manuscript has not been published to date, although it is preserved in a very good condition, with almost two full sets of texts written in German (fragments are written also in French, Polish and African languages). Opis:

This article describes authorial voice through evidential and epistemic sentential devices in a corpus of 19th and early 20th century travel texts. The corpus contains four works written by female travellers and the other four by men. Therefore, apart from providing a catalogue of the strategies deployed by the authors in order to mark modality and evidentiality, we also report on expected differences in their frequencies of use in relation to the writer’s gender. In addition, the interest of this study lies in the fact that, to the best of our knowledge, no research on writer stance has previously been carried out in texts belonging to the genre of travel writing.

Opis:

Travelling is the passion of the Polish, contemporary writer Andrzej Stasiuk. It is for him a goal in itself but also a point of reference for the definition of his own nation and country facing geopolitical change (My Europe, 2000; Dojczland, 2007; Waiting for the Turk, 2009), which constantly demands to be revised. Travelling serves the writer as a solitary but in the end illusory way of experiencing and capturing the material world in the face of perpetual annihilation. Stasiuk’s nostalgic journeys become a pretext for archiving the transient material world - Europe, which fades in front of our eyes and, by means of the author’s craft, metamorphoses into a myth, and makes the text another testimony of his geopoetics.

This paper reports on the first stage of an Italian national project, Access Through Text (ACT henceforth), designed to respond to issues related to reading strategies, textual barriers and online access to web texts in English in educational environments, with specific reference to English as a Foreign Language (EFL). The first stage of the work has been focused on the theoretical foundation on which the project is based, in particular giving suggestions about how digital literacy for learners aged 6-18 can be encouraged and facilitated in web-based multimodal platforms (Jones, Hafner 2012). An inventory of integrative systems has been created to account for a range of devices that help break down barriers in texts (Baldry, Gaggia, Porta, 2011; Gaggia 2012; Porta 2012). The second section of this paper presents the design and administration of a needs analysis for the identification of specific needs for the three targeted age groups of EFL learners (group 1: 6-10, group 2: 11-14; group 3: 15-18). The survey also investigates which best practices can be adopted with regard to a) ease of access; b) awareness of sociocultural and genre-related textual barriers, and c) language problems for EFL learners. This paper will focus on Group 3, i.e. learners aged 15-18, and on how New Travel websites (NTWs) can be used in educational environments through task-based activities. Preliminary findings have shown that the text barriers identified in NTW can be ascribed to different socio-semiotic, multimodal and linguistic areas. Multimodal corpora have been created and annotated for the purpose of unpacking and tackling text barriers. The rationale of corpora selection (Baldry, O’Halloran 2010), replicability of the experiment, issues in categorization and taxonomies involved in NTWs will be discussed, with the final goal of providing guidelines for teachers, parents and other stakeholders in the field of digital literacy.

The aim of this article is to analyse foreign travel plans of Polish tourists in 2020 and how they were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The study is based on information collected through an online survey involving 355 respondents. The survey was anonymous and consisted of 6 questions. It was found that the outbreak of the pandemic significantly changed foreign travel plans of Poles in the analysed period. Only a third of the respondents said they were planning a tourist or recreational trip abroad. There was much less interest in countries like Turkey, Egypt or Tunisia, in favour of European countries, mainly those located in the Mediterranean area, such as Spain and Italy. The study has also shown that domestic tourism can be expected to increase, as indicated by data collected by the Polish Chamber of Tourism.

The travel and tourism industry is one of the largest and fastest-growing sectors in the world. In the case of countries like Georgia, where tourism is a priority sector of the economy, innovation is crucial for a tourism-based development strategy — and this has become particularly important in the post-pandemic realities. This paper proposes a certain framework for understanding the possibilities for harnessing technological innovations in the travel industry (particularly apps and websites). It then considers the specific example of the country of Georgia, outlining the state's measures meant to foster IT innovation in tourism and also certain moderate successes to date in this respect. Next, the paper looks to Russian tourist-sector start-ups as models for operation that be successfully harnessed in the Georgian tourism industry, examining several such Russian start-ups in closer detail.

The article attempts to present one of the extremely important themes in the work of Barbara Gawryluk, which is emigration and the creation of a new home abroad. The author of the article, referring to selected works by the Krakow writer, tries to present how Gawryluk constructs the motif of a journey and the topos of the home and read the meaning that the writer gives to these spaces. The researcher notes the differences between the literary images of emigration caused by difficult economic conditions and the images of refugees forced to leave their homeland to save their lives.

Opis:

The growth of peri-urban areas is increasingly recognised as one of the dominant land use planning problems, with significance in the area of transport planning. This has necessitated the studying of travel behaviour in peri-urban areas in cities around the world. This study particularly examined the travel behaviour of households in the peri-urban areas of Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. It used both primary and secondary data. The primary data were obtained through a field survey from the administration of questionnaires on household heads in the study area using a multi-stage sampling technique. Findings revealed that 21.5% of the variability in the travel behaviour among the respondents could be attributed to socioeconomic characteristics such as age, household size, and length of stay, the number of cars owned and monthly income of households. It is recommended that the socioeconomic characteristics of residents in peri-urban areas should be considered when making transport policies in the State.

This article examines diverse travel narratives about steamship voyages to Asia in the first two decades after the opening of the Suez Canal, with special focus on journeys through the Suez Canal, Red Sea, and Indian Ocean. Sources include Polish, Serbian and Russian authors: Julian Fałat, Vlado Ivelić, Lucjan Jurkiewicz, Milan Jovanović, Vsevolod Krestovskiy, Karol Lanckoroński, Bronisław Piłsudski, Paweł Sapieha, Henryk Sienkiewicz, Ivan Yuvachev, Hugo Zapałowicz, and Ivan Zarubin. Given this variety of sources, consisting of 12 accounts in 3 languages, written by different types of travellers with dissimilar social backgrounds, it is possible to demonstrate a variety of phenomena that may be associated with steamship voyages. The two main issues examined here are: 1) the coexistence of multiple mobilities in the era of steam power, 2) different experiences of time while voyaging.

J.U. Niemcewicz spent his life travelling around the world not excluding Poland. He saw numerous gardens and described many of them in his diaries, letters and travel journals. Niemcewicz was also familiar with English treatises on designing and planting gardens and he held Delille’s narrative poems in high esteem. Polish gardens are always for Niemcewicz lonely islands emerging from the panorama of ruined, poor and devastated Polish provinces. They are an alien but attractive phenomenon. The creation of gardens is interpreted by Niemcewicz as a way of escaping: the reality of extreme poverty (Helena Radziwiłłowa’s Arkadia), the torment of wasted life (Szczęsny Potocki’s Sofiówka), the history (the Bystry family’s Iwańczyce) and the never-ending patriotic duties (Ludwik Kropiński’s Woroczyn). They are also an attempt at realizing a dream, an attempt doomed to fail (Niemcewicz’s Ursynów).

The purpose of this study is to explore Knut Hamsun’s I Æventyrland. Oplevet og drømt i Kaukasien (1903) as a text that interacts with some of the structural elements specific to the genre of travel literature. I have limited the investigation to the writer’s use of comparative rhetoric on a formal level, and to the function of conventional character types, with respect to content. The evaluation of these aspects of the narrative is undertaken with the aim of highlighting Hamsun’s awareness of and engagement with the tradition of travel writing and his talent for challenging its norms.

The present paper concentrates on the descriptions of Tunisia in the diary by Aline Réveillaud de Lens (1881–1925), a French painter and writer who in 1911, shortly after her marriage, came to live in Tunis. Reluctant to French norms and conventions, de Lens sees Tunisia as an ideal, fascinating land where she may finally be happy. This fascination is reflected in her descriptions of spaces which are to be analysed through the prism of geocriticism in three movements: Tunisia as a land of light and colours, Tunisian symbolic spaces – desert and oasis, and stereotypical Oriental spaces – palace, harem and hammam.

Transition of the Ichijō Modoribashi (Bridge of Returns) It comes as no surprise that the Japanese ancient capital, Kyoto, world-famous for its centuries-long history and rich culture, is among the most visited cities in the country, enjoyed by both domestic and foreign tourists alike. Many of them come to Kyoto to experience the traditional culture of Japan, but recent years have seen the emergence of a new type of tourist – one that explores places connected with the “Other World” or the supernatural, a phenomenon known in Japanese as makai kankō or makai meguri. The purpose of this paper is to describe how Kyoto became a symbol of traditional Japanese culture through various local government policies, especially in the 19th century. It also shows that the recent trend of visiting the supernatural-related spots reflects how Kyoto was perceived, and how its image evolved during the 20th century. The paper focuses on one particular example of the Ichijō Modoribashi, a bridge believed to stand in the exact same place as when it was first built in the Heian period. By tracing the roots of legends concerning the bridge, one can understand how the image of this spot has changed, and how it is connected with certain events in history. Currently, the Ichijō Modoribashi is depicted as a place closely related to the Japanese legendary astrologer, Abe no Seimei, a popular character found in numerous Japanese novels, comic books, and movies. The sightseeing history of the Ichijō Modoribashi is discussed with reference to Miyako meisho zue (Pictorial Guide to Famous Places in Kyōto) published in 1780 by Akisato Ritō, in the earliest Japanese travel magazine, Tabi (1924-2012), and the most popular travel guide book in Japan, Rurubu (1984 -), issued by JTB Publishing.

This paper focuses on the seldom studied poetry of Roberto Bolaño, using "La Universidad Desconocida", the exhaustive compilation published posthumously in 2007. Although Bolaño received wide recognition and many awards for his novels, he defined himself as a poet. In his poetry, we find the same topics and tendencies that he developed in the characters and plots of his narratives. A prime example is "Los detectives salvajes", a novel about a group of young rebel poets in the Mexico of the seventies. Bolaño’s poet characters, as well as his travels, exiles and criticisms of the literary establishment, take on a new light when compared alongside his poetry. this article explores the modes of poetic production as understood by Bolaño, as a way of life outside universities, the literary canon, and any other institutional networks. Instead, his poetic production is marked by the figure of Arthur Rimbaud as the archetype of the cursed poet.

The article gives a brief description of Moscow guide books printed between 1922 and 1991. The retrospective of Soviet texts is preceded by tracing the origins of Moscow travel guides, which goes back to travel notes from the 16th and 17th centuries. The paper presents 34 Soviet itineraries by providing their composition and content summary. Also, it demonstrates and explains the referential and syncretic patterns of Soviet guidebooks, and the shift made at the turn of the NEP era and the 1930s. Tourism evolution, city planning and state censorship are discussed among the factors that influence travel itineraries. The diachronic approach allows to note continuity and transformation elements of Soviet travel guides to Moscow.

Przedmiotem artykułu jest próba opisania, w jaki sposób w dziewiętnastowiecznych relacjach podróżopisarskich został odzwierciedlony problem szybkiego rozwoju środków transportu i nowych możliwości, które zrodziły się przed podróżopisarzami. Wyróżnione zostały trzy charakterystyczne sposoby opisu: dostrzeganie zaniku przestrzeni, zastępowanie przestrzeni czasem bądź kalejdoskopowe opisywanie wrażeń z podróży. W pracy dostrzeżone zostało również to, że mówiąc o doświadczeniach romantycznych podróżopisarzy, można posługiwać się stworzoną przez Marca Augégo kategorią „nie-miejsca”.
This article attempts to describe how nineteenth-century travel texts reflected the rapid expansion of transportation modes and new travel resources suddenly available to travel writers. Three characteristic descriptive modes are outlined: the disappearance of space, time’s tendency to supersede space, and kaleidoscopic descriptions of travel impressions. The article also discusses how we might apply Marc Augé’s category of the “non-place” to the experiences of romantic travel writers.

The aim of this article is to examine travel motivations for visiting urban destinations in the Republic of Serbia. Differences among the travel motives according to tourists’ demographic characteristics were also analyzed. The research was conducted from June 2018 to July 2019 on tourists who visited urban destinations in Serbia (Belgrade, Novi Sad, Niš and Kragujevac). The analysis included 390 valid answers from respondents. The research results, which are presented in the article, have shown that tourists visit urban destinations in Serbia for business, education, family and sightseeing. The contribution of this study is reflected in the identification of key travel motives for visiting urban destinations in Serbia and this can help those preparing a tourist offer to adjust their services to the needs and requirements of such tourists.
Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie badań motywacji podróżowania do ośrodków miejskich w Republice Serbii. Przeanalizowano również różnice między motywacjami w zależności od cech demograficznych turystów. Badania prowadzono w okresie od czerwca 2018 r. do lipca 2019 r. wśród turystów, którzy odwiedzili wybrane serbskie miasta (Belgrad, Nowy Sad, Nisz i Kragujevac). Analiza objęła 390 ważnych odpowiedzi uzyskanych od respondentów. Wyniki zaprezentowane w artykule świadczą o tym, że turyści odwiedzają ośrodki miejskie w Serbii w celach zawodowych, edukacyjnych, ze względów rodzinnych oraz poznawczych. Znaczenie tych badań polega na określeniu motywacji podróżowania do miast w Serbii, co może pomóc w przygotowaniu oferty turystycznej i dostosowaniu usług do potrzeb i wymagań turystów.

The paper looks closely at the representation of Switzerland in the works of three no-table Polish Romantic poets: Adam Mickiewicz, Juliusz Słowacki and Zygmunt Krasiń-ski. The author analyzes the nineteenth-century myth of Switzerland, which included: Alpine flora and fauna, federalism, the figure of J.J. Rousseau, the state’s proverbial peace and quiet, and its hospitality towards refugees. As it turns out, while writing about Switzerland Polish poets draw heavily on the cultural stereotypes, but, at the same time, treat this country with reserve. Switzerland is perceived as a transit state on the way to desired Italy; as a place inhabited by people of “foreign mentality”, followers of rational Protestantism; and their culture seems not only provincial but underdeveloped.

In the era of tough competition, each company should closely follow the trends on the market and watch changing expectations of potential buyers of their goods and services. Only those organizations that are able to meet the customers’ needs and preferences, gain a competitive position on the market. The objective of the article is to assess purchasing behaviour of customers travelling by ferries to Sweden on the Gdynia-Karlskrona route which is operated by Stena Line. The article consists of four main parts. The objective and methodology of empirical researches that were carried out are presented in the first part of the article. Next, there are theoretical considerations on customers’ behaviour and factors influencing their decision making process. In the third part of the article, the analysis of selected elements of purchasing behaviour of people travelling by ferries based on the results of empirical research was presented. The article ends with the summary indicating the conclusions that arose thanks to analysis of the survey results.

Travel accounts do not only record the experience of a journey and present unfamiliar lands and people to armchair travelers but they tell just as much about the self-perception and identity of the travel writer. This paper examines a special form of travel writing by analyzing emigrant accounts written by Hungarian revolutionaries in North America after 1849. The travelogues unveil the attitude of Hungarians both towards the home country and the New World and address questions of identity, highlighting the position of emigrants caught between two spaces – still Hungarian but already becoming increasingly American. The paper focuses on two travel writers/emigrants, Károly László and János Xántus, who became American citizens but also visited and worked in Mexico and wrote about both places in books and newspaper articles before returning to Hungary years later. The study introduces the concept of triangulation in these accounts and discusses how the (national) identity of these writers became more complicated with time, and how this complexity was reflected in writing.

Urban areas and metros are growing at a much higher rate than the rural areas. Urban areas play a significant role in the development of the nation by contributing 60% of the national income with only 27.78% of the population. Urban Transport is the most crucial (infrastructure) element in shaping urban development and living. The supply of transport is heterogeneous with a number of interacting and competing modes while the demand for it is derived from the overall pattern of urban activity. Urban Transport has a significant impact on the environment, land use, and land development patterns. In India, multiple institutions are responsible for urban transport and it is governed by multiple policies/ Acts/ legislations. While bus is the major mode of urban transport, local/suburban trains (Railway), Taxies/Autos and personalized transport makeup the rest. Lack of proper public transport has resulted in the increase of personal vehicles, causing problems of congestion, pollution and loss of productive time on travel delays. Study of urban transport systems across the world has revealed that well coordinated institutions with dedicated funding sources and proper planning ensure well functioning urban public transport systems, keeping the cities liveable and productive. Urban transport has to be a public good and be funded through public resources. Indian context have revealed a good beginning made in this direction but absence of institutional arrangements for planning at local level, lack of coordination among various institutions and departments, lack of dedicated funding, lack of inter modal coordination, lack of patronage for new rail based systems are also glaring.

The present paper focuses on relationships and tensions between literary and scientific discourses in the following editions of Oriental travel accounts by Pierre Belon du Mans. This French traveller, naturalist and doctor travelled across Greece, Egypt, Jerusalem and Turkey between 1546 and 1549 and, afterwards, published three volumes of Les Observations de plusieurs singularitez et choses memorables, trouvées en Grece, Asie, Judée, Egypte, Arabie, et autres pays estranges. Whereas in the first edition (1553), he put emphasis to dynamics of narration and differentiation between his own adventures and those of other travellers, in the second one (1555), he introduced some major changes, which were to underline the scientific nature of his trip. Those changes show, on one hand, the pressions the author underwent when he wanted to meet the scientific requirements of his times and, on the other hand, a kind of crisis he experienced being trapped between literary and scientific discourses and their stylistics.

The paper presents an analysis of tourist travel in Poland during the 2000-2012 time period and predictions for years 2013-2017. Since 2000 the amount of travelling Polish citizens has declined. Various factors may have impacted this state of matters e.g. the economic crisis or increasing the VAT rate. The biggest decline in tourist travel was observed between 2007 and 2009 and in 2011. On the other hand, the factor which increased the number of visits between 2007 and 2009 may have been the Euro 2012 championship, organized by both Poland and Ukraine. The paper presents a "eurosensitivity" factor, which describes the increase in people visiting selected voivodeships during 2012, primarily due to the Euro 2012 championship. According to the calculations, the voivodeship which benefited from the highest increase was Małopolska. The article also presents an estimation of travel for years 2013-2017.

In order to determine the postulate of ethics in tourism, it is necessary to systematically establish and analyze a group of issues first as part of a philosophical and theological reflection on the moral value of man and his actions. These issues include both general questions concerning the very foundation of the judgment of this kind of human activity, as well as the many specific problems that arise in the relationships and interactions that result from planning and realizing touristic aims. These relationships are primarily personal. However, from a moral point of view, the relationship between the tourist and his reason for traveling, which employees of the tourism industry largely influence, also exists. For, different and specific kinds of relationships arise depending on the type of tourism in which a person participates.
Postulat etyki w turystyce domaga się najpierw sporządzenia systematycznej grupy zagadnień, które następnie mogłyby być poddane szczegółowej analizie w ramach filozoficznej i teologicznej refleksji nad wartością moralną człowieka i jego działania. Zagadnienia te obejmują zarówno problematykę ogólną, dotyczącą fundamentów oceny tego typu ludzkiej aktywności, jak i liczne problemy szczegółowe, jakie wiążą się z relacjami powstającymi w związku z planowaniem i realizacją celów turystycznych. Relacje te mają charakter nade wszystko osobowy, ale dla oceny moralnej ważne są również odniesienia turysty do celu wyprawy, kształtowane w znacznej mierze przez pracowników branży turystycznej. Specyficzne relacje powstają także na bazie określonego rodzaju podróży.

The study aims to estimate the air travel demand forecast for domestic passengers' travels in Nigeria from 2002-2016. Data resourced from the Central Bank of Nigeria, the National Bureau of Statistics, and the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria. The study utilized a multiple regression model using a Stata-Graphic software solver to analyze the data. From the analysis, the result shows that there is a significant relationship between the explanatory variable (passengers) and unexplanatory variables National Disposable Income, Population, Average Airfare, Gross Domestic Product, Exchange Rate, Total Expenditure, and Crude oil price, accounted for adjusted R of 93.624% relationship with demand for domestic air travel of passenger. The R-square statistic shows that the fitted model explains the variability in the number of passengers (NPAX), which is 96.8124%. The Hypothesis testing reveals that National Disposable Income and Airfare have a strong statistically significant relationship with the demand for domestic air travel with a P-value of 0.0013. Mores, a statistically significant relationship exists between National Disposable Income, Average airfare, and Crude oil price with P-values of 0.0017 and 0.0445, respectively. Furthermore, a forecast of the number of passengers and average airfare was carried out using ARIMA (1,0,0) model, which made available the future predicted values for the number of passenger movements and average airfare for the next 10-12 years to come. Thus, the study recommends that stakeholders in the air transport sector should work towards improving the capacity and infrastructure to accommodate the growth of air travel demand for domestic air travel in Nigeria. Policy implications were made on regulating the sector by having a good pricing policy to control the air fare for the industry.

Opis:

Road transportation does an excellent job of connecting Savar's inner and outer areas, but it might be difficult for commuters to decide which mode of transportation to employ because residents of Savar come from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds. It is necessary to do in-depth research on the characteristics of people in the study region who choose different modes of transportation to achieve the goal of selecting a certain mode for their travel. Where a person lives can have a significant impact on their typical patterns of travel behavior. People who live closer to the center of things have access to a wider variety of amenities than those who live further away, and as a consequence, their travel patterns are distinct from one another. The study's findings indicate that several factors, including income, age, gender, and vocational qualities and goals, influence a commuter's preferred method of transportation. When it comes to selecting a mode of transportation, the most predictable factors to take into account are trip time and cost. After conducting research, it was found that most excursions are made from this place to Motijheel, Tejgaon, and Savar Export Processing Zone for their services, businesses, and jobs, respectively.

In the second half of the nineteenth century, Iceland had become quite a popular destination for American travelers. Among this group were Samuel Kneeland, a physician and naturalist, and Bayard Taylor, a poet, translator and reporter for the New York Tribune, who came to Iceland in the summer of 1874 to attend the millennial celebration of the first settlement of that island. They visited Þingvellir, a site that many Icelanders considered and still consider “holy ground”, the Haukadalur valley, or the valley of geysers, and Reykjavík, the main and at the time the only Icelandic city. Two travelogues, entitled Egypt and Iceland in the Year 1874 and An American in Iceland, published in 1874 and 1876, respectively, were the fruit of their visit to Iceland. The present paper offers a reading of these accounts in order to trace the strategies employed by American authors to describe nineteenth-century Iceland and Icelanders.

Opis:

Many academic disciplines, including and relatively recently philosophical ethics and moral theology, are interested in the issue of tourism. Moral theology (theological ethics) strives to create (interpret) an existing system of norms according to which one can determine whether human activities in tourism are either good or evil. These activities are very complex. Therefore, theologians must first delineate the field of research and determine and prepare a set of issues to be studied. An ontology of tourism (defining the essence of tourism, the subjects and objects of touristic acts, the types of tourism, etc.) can serve as a point of departure for theological and moral reflections on tourism. Kairology and axiology are also general issues to consider. Placing the values (threats) of tourism within the context of contemporary signs of the time, which include the changing perception of the aims of tourism, is necessary. Specifically theologians must consider particular issues such as the personal, material, and functional interactions that are involved in planning and implementing touristic aims as well as the different types of travel.
Fenomen turystyki jest przedmiotem zainteresowania wielu dyscyplin naukowych; od stosunkowo niedawna także etyki filozoficznej i teologii moralnej. Teologia moralna (etyka teologiczna) próbuje stworzyć (odczytać istniejący) system norm, w świetle których można oceniać działania człowieka w sferze turystyki jako dobre bądź złe. Działania te są bardzo złożone. Dlatego eksploracja poszczególnych zagadnień domaga się najpierw zakreślenia pola badawczego, sporządzenia grupy problemów badawczych. Punktem wyjścia refleksji teologicznomoralnej nad turystyką jest swego rodzaju ontologia turystyki (określenie jej istoty, przedmiotu i podmiotu aktu turystycznego, rodzajów turystyki, itp.). Do zagadnień ogólnych należy także kairologia i aksjologia. Chodzi o umieszczenie wartości (zagrożeń) turystyki w kontekście współczesnych znaków czasu, do których należy także zmiana w postrzeganiu celów turystyki. Zagadnienia szczegółowe obejmują problematykę szeroko rozumianych relacji osobowych, rzeczowych i funkcjonalnych, jakie tworzą się w związku z planowaniem i realizacją celów turystycznych oraz rodzajem podejmowanej podróży.

About the MeetingThis year the Annual Meeting off the German Society of Travel Medicine took place in Bremerhaven, September 16th to 18th. This traditional harbour town where thousands of Germans were embarking hundred years ago facing an uncertain future, the so-called “climate house” (an exihibtion about several aspects of the world’s climate) and the Alfred-Wegener Institute for Arctic Research were a fantastic setting for the meeting’s motto “traveling under extreme conditions”. After a brillant introduction by Stefan Kröpelin about research in the Sahara two weeks away from the next pharmacy and a fascinating lecture by Eberhard Kohlberg how to organize expeditions to Antarctica and how to work and to live there several lecturers illuminated a wide field of travel medicine in more or less extreme conditions.

Opis:

One of the key representations of Serbia between the two world wars in British and American travel accounts is the one about a child. Set in the context of Orientalism and postcolonial tradition this representation is usually interpreted as infantilization that reflects the marginalization and symbolic position of Serbia and the Balkans outside the mainstream of world politics and economy. As the academic discourse is mostly occupied with orientalism and postcolonialism, this paper focuses on symbolic and mythological potential of the discourse analysis about Serbia—“the child of Europe.” The paper analyses three forms of infantilization of Serbia in the interwar travel accounts, while each chapter is dedicated to specific form of infantilization: 1. Serbia as an orphan of Europe; 2. Serbs as medieval people (unspoiled by civilization and vital); 3. Their “temperament” reveals cultural, and thus, political immaturity. The analysis is based on Darren Kelsey’s discursive-mythological approach and it draws a conclusion about the interconnection between the child’s image, culture, historical circumstances, internal/external representation and affective archetypes.

Opis:

This article examines the perception of countries of the Eastern bloc and Soviet republics other than the Russian Soviet Republic in Indian travelogues of the Cold War era written in the Bengali language. Although most Indian travellers who came to the European countries of the Eastern bloc and the USSR at that period only visited the main cities of the Russian Soviet Republic, some ventured into lesser known territories, e.g. Estonia, Poland, or Ukraine, and in their travel accounts included one or two chapters on those regions. The distinctive feature of their travelogues is the strong focus on various aspects of social and economic life, from the education system, through workers’ rights, to public housing, and on the progress Eastern bloc countries made since coming under Soviet influence. The article argues that Indian travellers created the image of Eastern bloc countries and Soviet republics other than the Russian Soviet Republic as a periphery of Soviet Russia by constantly comparing the two, presenting Russia as the heart of the Soviet world and focusing on problems other parts of the USSR and the Eastern bloc still faced despite of what they perceived as Moscow’s assistance.
Artykuł analizuje obraz republik radzieckich – innych niż Rosyjska Republika Radziecka – i krajów bloku wschodniego w indyjskiej literaturze podróżniczej w języku bengalskim czasów zimnej wojny. Mimo że większość podróżujących z Indii do ZSSR i bloku wschodniego odwiedzała jedynie główne miasta Rosyjskiej Republiki Radzieckiej, niektórzy odwiedzali również mniej znane regiony, na przykład Estonię, Polskę lub Ukrainę, a potem zamieszczali opisy tych miejsc w swoich relacjach z podróży. Szczególną cechą tych relacji było skupienie się na różnych aspektach sytuacji społeczno-ekonomicznej: od systemu edukacji, przez prawa pracownicze po budownictwo publiczne, jak też na postępie, który miał dokonać się w różnych regionach bloku wschodniego po wejściu krajów w radziecką strefę wpływów. Artykuł pokazuje, jak indyjscy podróżnicy tworzyli obraz krajów bloku wschodniego i republik radzieckich innych niż rosyjska jako peryferii Rosji Radzieckiej poprzez ciągłe ich porównywanie oraz skupianie się na problemach, które pozostawały nierozwiązane, mimo tego, co postrzegali jako wsparcie Moskwy dla krajów bloku wschodniego i republik radzieckich innych niż rosyjska.

Celem artykułu jest wskazanie podstawowych przemian, które dokonały się w przedmiocie zachowań transportowych mieszkańców polskich miast w okresie ostatnich 50 lat. W 2019 r. przypada 50. rocznica przeprowadzenia w Polsce pierwszych kompleksowych badań ruchu (KBR). W związku z tym mijające pół wieku historii badań w polskich miastach to dobra okazja by dokonać ich przeglądu i podsumowania. Okres ostatnich 50 lat był czasem burzliwych przemian społeczno-gospodarczych i politycznych, obejmował liczne momenty przełomowe, w tym choćby transformację ustrojową, wstąpienie do Unii Europejskiej itd. W artykule zostały zgromadzone i zaprezentowane podstawowe wyniki zrealizowanych kompleksowych badań ruchu w polskich miastach wraz z odniesieniami do stosowanych metod badań. Podjęto także próbę identyfikacji najważniejszych trendów zaznaczających się w zachowaniach transportowych ludności przez ostatnie 50 lat, a także scharakteryzowano zjawiska, które do tych zmian się przyczyniły. W ostatniej części artykułu zostały przedstawione możliwości wykorzystywania wyników badań i korzyści płynące z prowadzenia regularnego monitoringu mobilności mieszkańców miast.
The main aim of the article is to present the most important transformations in travel behaviours of citizens in urban areas in Poland in the last 50 years. The first complex traffic survey were conducted in 1969, so 50th anniversary of such researches seem to be a good occasion to the summaries. In analysed period important socio-economic and political transformations could be observed. Such critical junctions as the fall of communism, accession to the European Union, etc. had important role in changing mobility patterns of inhabitants. In our article we collected and compared the results of traffic surveys conducted in Polish cities in the last 50 years. Based on this database we were able to identify the most important transformations of travel behaviours. Also the origins of these changes were investigated. Finally, we discussed the possibilities of the use of mobility data and advantages of regular monitoring of travel behaviours in urban areas.

Artykuł prezentuje koncepcję opracowania funkcji oporu przestrzeni typu 3D dla potrzeb modelowania ruchu. W proponowanej metodyce uwzględniany jest wymiar pionowy przemieszczeń z jednoczesnym uwzględnieniem zmienności wartości tej funkcji w obszarze sieci drogowej. Prezentowany artykuł opracowano na podstawie kilkuletnich badań własnych autorów (w tym niepublikowanych głównie w przedmiocie przemmzczeńpionowych). Przedmiotem zainteresowania badań były preferencje mieszkańców w zakresie wańantówprzemieszczania się w sieci miejskiej w stosunku do przemieszczeń wykonywanych w ramach podróży obligatoryjnych. W tym kontekście analizie poddane zostały opory przestrzeni dla zbadanych w ramach ankiet podróży rzeczywistych (obligatoryjnych) i ich odpowiedników substytucyjnych. Zamierzeniem wykonania ankiet było sprawdzenie jedynie pewnych ogólnych tendencji w poruszanych w artykule aspektach związanych z przemieszczeniami w sieci transportowej. Zdaniem autorów modelowanie procesów ruchu w gęstych sieciach transportowych wymaga stosowania innych niż dotychczas funkcji oporu, a przynajmniej modyfikacji oporów przestrzennych i wprowadzenia poprawek z uwagi na przemieszczenia wertykalne. Współcześnie w sieciach gęstych parametry przemieszczeń, możliwość wyboru substytucyjnych środków transportu, analiza przemieszczeń pionowych istotne różnią się, w tym statystycznie, od wykonywanych jeszcze dwie, trzy dekady wstecz. Zastosowanie właściwych funkcji oporu przestrzeni jest warunkiem konstrukcji zasadnych modeli ruchu. Ponadto istotne w modelowaniu procesów transportowych jest zestawianie konkurencyjnych modeli ruchu w oparciu o substytucyjne relacje podróży. Te relacje mogą znacząco różnić się w zakresie funkcji oporu przestrzeni. Prezentowana koncepcja została zilustrowana projekcjami funkcji oporu przestrzeni typu 3D (hipotetycznymi i rzeczywistymi).Jednym z efektów badań jest również opracowanie dotyczące sposobów postrzegania przestrzeni przez respondentów w kontekście realizowanych przez nich przemieszczeń rzeczywistych i substytucyjnych w sieci miejskiej, W podsumowaniu artykułu autorzy przedstawiają pewne kierunki rozwoju modeli ruchu, które implikowane są prezentowaną koncepcją.
The conception of 3D space resistance function building with variance of vertical dislocation has been presented in the article. Authors have shown results of travel surveys that had been performed on Upper Silesia Region. Inhabitants were asked about their preferences on alternative modes of transportation in urban network (in case of obligatory travels — to work places and to educational institution). The analysis of received answers helped to describe space resistance function for actual and alternative mode. The idea was illustrated by theoretical and practical 3D space resistance. Modelling of traffic flow in dense transportation network needs to use different to actual methods. The conception of utilization the GSM and GPS technology to identify space resistance has been proposed. Inhabitants perception on travel distance and travel time have been also discussed.

The paper presents Hanna Mortkowicz’s account of her trip to Palestine enti-tled W Palestynie. Obrazy i zagadnienia [In Palestine. Images and Issues] (1936) as a text read after many years, which can be inscribed, in dialogue with contemporary reportage (e.g. by Paweł Smoleński), in the intercultural dialogue currently in progress. The study shows how Mortkowicz opens the reader to the problem of migration. The writer does this by focusing her accounts on a group of Jews fleeing from Nazism – eternal wanderers, coming to Palestine in search of a new homeland. Text analysis shows how, thanks to Mortkowicz’s use of numer-ous narrative strategies and description techniques, such as: focalisation, per-sonal narrative, and accumulation of space or time, she introduced her readers to the experience of newly¬ arrived refugees, people who are on the border be-tween social existence and non¬ existence. In fact, a study of the text makes it possible to find that this forgotten title can provide reading matter to be used in the context of contemporary intercultural education.
