The paper discusses the connection between Olga Tokarczuk’s novel Drive Your Plow over the Bones of the Dead and the poetry of William Blake. Blake’s ideology was to show how mankind had come to the end because of its misdeeds, using the animal imagery, which links him to the topic presented by Tokarczuk, criticizing the cruelty of the authorities towards animals. She quoted Blake at the beginning of every chapter and created a character skilled in translating Blake. Since not much of Blake’s oeuvre has been translated in Macedonian, the translator of this novel had to deal with translating Blake too. Consequently, this text also focuses on the translation problems which she had to solve.

Gender theory concerns most areas of woman‘s existence in a society and an artistic text is one of many subject manifestations, which may and is likely to influence public opinions. After the period of literature dominated by heroines fighting for the rights, the woman‑provocateurs came to set free not only their bodies, but also their souls. Apart from the male–female relations (gender theory), Olga Tokarczuk’s short story Najbrzydsza kobieta świata (tr. The Ugliest Woman of World) reveals various aspects of women’s writing, in particular – the aesthetics of ugliness. Within this milieu, the ugliness is locked in two stands: 1. the direct characteristics of the ugliest woman in the world and 2. the shocking element of the suffering aesthetics, namely, the exposure of woman by the others.

The sketch focuses on two novels by Olga Tokarczuk (Flights and The Books of Jacob), seeking to show different ways of using the travel motif. In Tokarczuk’s case, in fact, this is not only about moving in the geographical space, but also about exploring one’s own self. The questions posed by the author of House of Day, House of Night are universal; addressing fundamental aspects, they reveal the 21st century human condition. The writer often uses the motif of time, of the book or of travelling as such, showing literature as a specific language of communication that makes it possible to experience other people’s lives.

Narracja tego tekstu skoncentrowana jest wokół opisu wrażeń, przeżyć i refleksji płynących z lektury książki Czuły narrator Olgi Tokarczuk. Książka ta nie jest zwykłym tekstem literackim, jest swoistym zapisem artystycznego credo pisarki, a jednocześnie manifestem głoszącym pewne potrzebne i rewolucyjne zarazem idee, skłaniające nie tylko do głębszych rozważań nad losem człowieka i świata, ale i prowokujących do działań w celu ich urzeczywistnienia. Stąd i tekst nie przybiera postaci klasycznej recenzji, a jest raczej opowieścią o spotkaniu czułej odbiorczyni z czułą narracją prowadzoną przez autorkę książki. W opisie relacji z tego spotkania podjęte zostały wątki mi najbliższe (wybrane i najważniejsze), które wciąż rezonują u mnie jako zaangażowanej czytelniczki
The narrative of this text focuses on the description of impressions, experiences and reflections coming from reading the book Czuły narrator by Olga Tokarczuk. This book is not an ordinary literary text, it is a specific record of the writer’s artistic credo, and at the same time a manifesto proclaiming certain necessary and revolutionary ideas, prompting not only to reflect more deeply on the fate of man and the world, but also to provoke actions to make them come true. Hence, the text does not take the form of a classic review but is rather a story about a meeting of a sensitive recipient with a sensitive narrative led by the author of the book. In the description of the report from this meeting, the topics that are closest to me (selected and the most important) were taken up, which still resonate with me as a committed reader.

The paper discusses selected reactions to the Nobel Prize for Literature awarded to Olga Tokarczuk. The author focuses on the dispute about the legitimacy and justification of the Swedish Academy’s decision, highlighting the sceptical opinions, in some cases challenging the Academy’s members’ verdict. Referring to a book by James F. English on cultural prizes, the author recalls the role of public controversies as an essential tool of influencing the general public. He also compares the situation of two winners of the Nobel Prize in Literature (Olga Tokarczuk – for 2018, Peter Handke – for 2019), announced on the same day. Concluding, the author seeks to present the most important aspects of the dispute on the position and influence of Tokarczuk’s literary output.

The article seeks to explore the theme of nature’s revenge in Olga Tokarczuk’s novel Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead (2009, translated into English in 2018). The book may be classified as Anthropocene fiction or eco-fiction Tokarczuk’s treatment of vengeful nature in Drive Your Plow… manifests as a literary representation of a physiology of an ecosystem in disequilibrium, pervaded by images of blood in a snowy landscape. The author renders her female protagonist, Janina Duszejko, a proponent and practitioner of a theory proposing that nature wreaks revenge on humans. Tokarczuk presents new ways of imagining agency beyond anthropocentrism. Drive Your Plow may serve as an example of literary fiction from which posthumanist reflections may spring, while simultaneously it oftentime (even if unintentionally) draws on posthumanist philosophy and ethics. I also refer to Olga Tokarczuk biography and views in search of her environmental concerns and solutions.

The work reflects Olga Tokarczuk’s short story Dress Rehearsal which deals with the topic of apocalypse, climatic catastrophe, and climate change. The article is a part of a scientific work, which is a master’s thesis dealing with the complex issue of the subjectivity of animals and nature, as well as the common environment and post-environment, and the study of the relationship between humans and non-humans. In the work, the Nobel Prize winner comes under the influence of a ‘world-creator’ and an ‘intense observer’, thus human relations can be complicated in times of the end of the world and how human attitudes towards animals and the world change. This time of the end, marked by Giorgio Agamben with the messianic era, allows for a certain non-action towards reality, and empathy and compassion begin being a remedy for centuries of objectification of other beings.

Aleksander Nowak’s (*1979) third opera, ahat ilī – Sister of Gods, premiered in 2018, sets a libretto by Polish Nobel Prize winner Olga Tokarczuk, based on her own novel. This marriage of literature and opera, reinforced by the unique situation in which the author of the text which served as an inspiration and of the libretto is one and the same person, suggests that the work could be defined as a Literaturoper. My paper aims to analyse this composition in terms of genre as well as to represent the unique path of its content’s transformation from a literary into an operatic work, along with an analysis of the verbal component presented from the librettological perspective.

In the paper we make an attempt to read out the post-phenomenology of Henri Maldiney in the novel Bieguni. Maldiney’s post-phenomenology is not treated as a doctrine, but an action and an activity made against the elements of psychoanalysis and postmodernism. The world depicted in Bieguni is one in which we can observe continuous movement and compulsion. The border between the entity and the world they are living in has been erased. It is the world in which a man has to choose his identity. “Being on one’s way” opens a person to new experiences and inspires him/her to some creative actions. Neither the nomadic thinking nor the format of writing are growing; not in some determined theoretical place, and not either in some well-defined writing style. The identity of the individual seems to be set, and formed only by his self-understanding. Tokarczuk’s Bieguni is becoming part of an important discourse on the literature of the 21st century. It is not necessary to consider narrations only in the aesthetic context, which is cleaning the world up, but as the act of mind turning life into art. Every man is a wanderer travelling not only in the physical but also cultural dimension, and such journeys have both literal and metaphorical meanings. A walk consisting of seeking oneself as an artist, spiritual and intellectual travel, and exploring the world of symbols, are the professional domain of authors, and at the same time an excerpt of their mythology.

The article discusses the concept of Olga Tokarczuk’s “tender narrator”, which was demonstrated in her Nobel speech, and developed in a book entitled “Tender Narrator” (Tokarczuk 2020). The writer’s proposed way of describing the narrative and narrator was used to examine the concept of the biographical narrator, his bond with a hero, the truth and the fiction in the biography, the process of discovering and finding a purpose to existence. Olga Tokarczuk’s idea was discussed in the context of other useful theories aimed at the search for meaning: a reference to the concept of the course of life of Charlotte Bühler (1933/1999) and the will to make sense of Viktor E. Frankl (1948/2018, 1982/2017, 1988/2018, 1992/2018) allowed us to see a common ground for reflection on the role and specificity of biographical narrative. On the one hand, Agata Bielik-Robson’s concept (2004) on the trauma of the present highlighted the need for retrospective life storytelling and its therapeutic, reparative nature. On the other hand, the personalistic norm (in its original sense proposed by Karol Wojtyła in “Love and Responsibility” of 1986), according to which the only appropriate way to refer to a person is love, turned out to be close to the model of “tender narrator”. The extensive conceptualization of that idea, proposed by Olga Tokarczuk, compared to the concept of biographical narrator and the concepts mentioned above, allows for a reconsideration of the important issues discussed earlier: the “tender narrator” model turned out to be inspiring for attempts to rethink the adequacy of biographical representation, the objectivity vs. involvement of a biographer, and the relationship between biography and literature.

The aim of this article is to examine the renderings of lexical items essential for the structure and the content of Tokarczuk’s ‘Bieguni’, i.e. podróż, and ruch, in the English translation performed by Jennifer Croft. Since we believe that both a wide-angle lens and a microscope are needed to view the composition properly, we offer both a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the terms in question. In particular, 78 instances of the use of podróż, and 80 instances of the use of ruch are subject to the scrupulous comparative analyses when it comes to their translated equivalents, providing an in-depth description of their context-embedded textual meanings, and an attempt to demonstrate that some of the translator’s choices befit the characteristics of explicitation.

Zarówno w wykładzie noblowskim, jak i w swoich esejach Olga Tokarczuk proponuje własną koncepcję literatury, którymi elementami są projekt nazywany przez nią ognozją, koncepcja narratora czwartoosobowego (panoptykalnego) czy też rozumienie i funkcja mitu, a szerzej – wszelkiej narracji. Jak sama przyznaje, jej koncepcję można uznać za alterreligijną. Ona sama odwołuje się do natury narracji biblijnej, aby – uciekając się do analogii – opisać własną koncepcję autora i innych składowych dzieła literackiego. Jej koncepcję można interpretować z punktu widzenia teorii literatury, ale także teologii. Niniejszy tekst jest próbą takiej właśnie interpretacji. Autor szuka paraleli pomiędzy literaturą w rozumieniu Tokarczuk a Biblią jako tekstem objawionym i spisanym przez hagiografa. W konkluzji autor stawia tezę, że nie jest to projekt postsekularny czy quasi-religijny, ale sekularny, a de facto gnostycki, ponieważ odwołuje się do wiedzy i kompetencji niby-boskiej jako fundamentu dla konstrukcji świata przedstawionego.
Olga Tokarczuk proposes – both in the Nobel Prize lecture and in her essays – her concept of literature, the features of which are the project she calls ognosia, based on a four-person (panoptical) narrator, or the understanding and function of myth, and more broadly – of all narration. As she believes, her concept can be considered as alter-religious. She refers to the nature of the biblical narrative to – resorting to analogy – describe her view of an author and other components of a literary work. The concept may be interpreted from the point of view of literary theory but also theology. The article is an attempt at such an interpretation. Its author looks for a parallel between literature as understood by Tokarczuk and the Bible as a text revealed and written down by hagiographers. In the conclusion of the sketch, a thesis may be found that Tokarczuk’s idea is not a post-secular or quasi-religious project, but secular and de facto gnostic, because it refers to the knowledge and supposedly divine competence as the foundation for the construction of the world presented.

In 2018, the third opera composition by Aleksander Nowak (*1979), ahat ilī – Sister of Gods had its premiere., The libretto was created by Polish Nobel Prize winner Olga Tokarczuk, on the basis of her own novel. This kind of combination of literature and opera, reinforced by the unique situation in which the author of the text-inspiration and the libretto is the same person, suggests that the work should be defined as a literary opera. The aim of the article is to present the composition in terms of its genres as well as to show the unique path of its content from literary work to operatic, together with the analysis of the libretto from the librettological perspective.

From the beginning of his service in the Przemyśl Diocese, bishop Ignacy Tokarczuk performed his pastoral activities with great vigor and dedication and was, therefore, the most important “object” of the operational work of the PRL’s Security Service (a Polish acronym: SB) in the south-east of Poland. The Security Service undertook number of operational activities against him. He was surrounded by an organized network of secret the security’s collaborators that informed about the bishop’s plans and deeds and realized some operational tasks. By means of disintegration and disinformation activities, the security tried to damage his reputation in the society and in the church circles as well as limit his pastoral activity. Despite great efforts, huge expenses and involvement of many people in this process, the security managed neither to intimidate nor to destroy the bishop.
Od samego początku swojej posługi w diecezji przemyskiej bp I. Tokarczuk ze względu na rozmach podejmowanych działań pasterskich był najważniejszym „obiektem” pracy operacyjnej Służby Bezpieczeństwa PRL w południowo-wschodniej Polsce. Podejmowano wobec niego cały szereg działań. Organizowano wokół niego sieć tajnych współpracowników SB, którzy na bieżąco informowali o planach i poczynaniach biskupa oraz realizowali określone przez bezpiekę zadania. Poprzez działania dezintegracyjne i dezinformacyjne starały się zniszczyć mu autorytet w społeczeństwie i kręgach kościelnych oraz ograniczyć jego działalność pasterską. Mimo wielkiego wysiłku, nakładu środków i ludzi nie udało się go zastraszyć czy zniszczyć.

The subject of the interpretation presented in this article is Deus ex, a short story by Olga Tokarczuk, published in the volume Wardrobe (Szafa) in 1997. Analysed in the contemporary context of the ever stronger catastrophe narrative, it approaches present-day disasters and hazards as part of the eternal process of the forever transforming world. Be doing so, it alludes to the ancient understanding of catastrophe as a revolution, a dramatic climax and a turning point that leads to inevitable catharsis. In Tokarczuk’s story, disaster is part of everyday life with all its alternate rhythms. The beginnings and ends of computer worlds generated by the protagonist create a kaleidoscope that reveals a slow disintegration of the main character’s reality. His plane converges with the coexisting elements of the feminine and masculine, human and divine, linear and cyclical time, the space of the introverted and extroverted, being awake and sleeping. In light of this binary, contrapuntal configuration of characters, objects and phenomena, disaster can be envisaged not only as a sign of a certain order coming to an end but also as a condition for the reorganisation of the current socio-cultural system. Once shaken, it can reveal itself in a new, different form.

W jej esejach i opowiadaniach można także dostrzec przejawy wytworzenia się nowej duchowości w związku z segregacją śmieci.
The paper discusses the issue of waste and plastic, especially plastic bags, in the works by Olga Tokarczuk. The author considers what waste is in today’s civilization. Waste is a marginalized, omitted element in the human existence. This character of waste is used by Tokarczuk in her prose, where waste appears in full sight only to disappear a moment later. She presents plastic products as an example of a new, better species, which may prove to have surpassed man in terms of survival of the fittest. In her essays and short stories examples of a new spirituality related to waste segregation can also be observed.

As a foundation and product of grand narratives, norms apply to any and every aspect of individual, communal, and social life. They regulate our behaviors, determine directions in the evolution of arts and philosophies, condition intra- and cross cultural understanding, organize hierarchies. Yet – when transformed into laws – norms become appropriated by dominant discourses and become “truths.” Those in control of language always construe them as “universal” and, as such, “transparent.” The usefulness of norms stems from the fact that they facilitate our orientation in the world. In the long run, however, they are bound to block our imaginative access to alternative ways of living and thinking about reality, thus enslaving our minds in a construction of reality believed to be natural. In a world so determined, dissenting perspectives and pluralities of views threaten to disrupt norms and normativities, along with the order (patriarchal, racist, sexist, ableist, speciesist, etc.) build into them. Benefactors of a normative worldview and average individuals busily trying to fit in police the perimeters of the accepted, disciplining nonconformists, rebels, and nonnormative individualists of every stripe. “Assent - and you are sane,” quipped Emily Dickinson in her well-known poem, “Demur - you’re straightway dangerous - And handled with a Chain -” (209).  Notorious for their inimical attitude to repressive majorities, artists, philosophers, academics, and other “marginal” persons have always challenged deified norms. Opening up liberatory perspectives, they have tried to escape mental captivities and imagine the world otherwise: as a place where difference is cherished and where justice reigns. Polish writer Olga Tokarczuk, winner of the 2018 Nobel Prize in literature, imagines an alternative reality whose inhabitants, Heterotopians, constantly suspend commonly held beliefs in order to examine their validity. Passive perception, argues Tokarczuk, “has moral significance. It allows evil to take root” (43). Without a periodical suspension of belief in truths so deeply naturalized that they look like Truth Itself, we become perpetrators of the evil glossed over by narratives whose veracity we take for granted.

This article examines proper nouns in the works of Olga Tokarczuk. I analyse critical assumptions of literary onomastics and try to understand to what extent the onimic layer of the works of the Polish Nobel laureate can be considered as a system. The cited examples of literary proper names appearing in selected Tokarczuk novels allow us to understand the individual features of naming (especially the use of capital letters and the creation of individual descriptors) as well as the way this is rooted in the broader context of literature, culture, science and history, which also influence the use of proper names in the author’s works. The theories put forward by Italian literary historian Franco Moretti provide a complementary analytical framework.

Ukazany przez noblistkę w krzywym zwierciadle antropocen jawi się jako mieszanina opartych na języku, obrazie i ciele dyskursów, zderzonych z egocentrycznym, introwertycznym profilem osobowościowym bohaterek utworu. W kontekście myśli posthumanistycznej (R. Braidotti, D. Haraway, T. Morton) ta złożoność staje się, paradoksalnie, warunkiem przetrwania ludzkości.
The article offers an interpretation of Olga Tokarczuk’s story, The Visit, in which the writer portrays the epoch of man in the costume of a futuristic clone community. The Anthropocene, shown by the Nobel Prize winner in a distorted mirror, appears as a mixture of discourses based on language, image, and body, confronted with the egocentric, introverted personality profile of the protagonists of the work. In the context of post‑humanist thought (R. Braidotti, D. Haraway, T. Morton), this complexity becomes, paradoxically, a condition for the survival of humanity.

The aim of this paper is to examine intertextual relations between Olga Tokarczuk’s The Books of Jacob and New Athens by Benedykt Chmielowski which are interesting due to the ongoing debate about (un)encyclopedic and (un)scientific nature of „the oldest polish encyclopedia”. Both the author of New Athens and the book itself are used by Polish Nobel Laureate as symbols of the soon-to-be gone pre-Enlightenment era, and they are contrasted with the work of Johann Heinrich Zeler or Denis Diderot. It is worth noting that this particular image of New Athens is determined by edition used by Tokarczuk. Author of Flights was familiar with and influenced by the famous edition of New Athens made by Maria and Jan Józef Lipscy. Interferences in the structure of the original text, highly subjective and tendencious selection of included material and addition of satirical images by Szymon Kobyliński shaped perception of New Athens as curious and bizarre work, alien to ideals of 18th century encyclopedists. This edition perpetuated the „black legend” of the so-called „first polish encyclopedia”. Polish Nobel Prize laureate – by using this particular edition – unwillingly and unknowingly took part in a centuries long debate about the work of Chmielowski. This entanglement leads to interesting problems and asks serious questions: how choice of sources can influence one’s perception of text? How different would be usage of this encyclopedia and its role in the novel if Tokarczuk would not be familiar with Lipscy edition? In this paper the author compares three different New Athens: the original ones, written by Benedykt Chmielowski, famous edition made by Józef and Maria Lipscy and fictional New Athens described in The Books of Jacob.

Skupia się na „czułości” jako kategorii metodologiczno-literackiej wprowadzonej przez Olgę Tokarczuk i analizuje jej funkcjonowanie w powieści Prowadź swój pług przez kości umarłych. Takie próby poszukiwania języka Innego kierują ludzki podmiot w stronę międzygatunkowego współbycia i współodczuwania, a gest narracyjnego otwierania się na doświadczenie zwierzęcia staje się majeutyczną metodą przekazywania tego, co zwierzęce i nieświadomie. Podjęta zostanie również próba refleksji nad tym czy narrator oddający głos zwierzęciu nie uzurpuje sobie prawa do przekazywania zwierzęcego doświadczenia.
The article deals with a reflection on the transfer of animal experience in literary texts. It focuses on “tenderness” as a methodological and literary category introduced by Olga Tokarczuk and analyzes its functioning in the novel Drive Your Plow over the Bones of the Dead. Such attemptsto search for the language of “the Other” direct the human subject towards interspecies coexistence and compassion. The narrative gesture of opening up to the animal’s experience becomes a method of transmitting what is animal and unconscious. An attempt will also be made to reflect on whether the narrator giving voice to the animal is usurping the right to transmit the animal’s experience.

Ukazano wielość współczesnych użyć czułości w rodzimej krytyce literackiej, po czym poddane zostały analizie „czułość” i „czuły narrator” z mowy noblowskiej Olgi Tokarczuk. W ostatniej części ukazane zostały wybrane przykłady z recepcji światowej, gdzie czułość łączona jest z ekokrytyką i problematyką literatury światowej.
This paper outlines the history and modern usages of the concept of “tenderness” in Polish literary criticism. It introduces the genealogy and origins in the esthetics of sentimentalism, along with its romantic modifications and its place in Polish literature and modern criticism. Modern usages of tenderness in national literary criticism have been discussed, followed by the analysis of the notions of “tenderness” and “the tender narrator” from Olga Tokarczuk’s Nobel Prize speech. The final part focuses on selected examples of international reception, which combines tenderness with eco-criticism and issues of world literature.

The essay is an attempt to sketch a panorama of representations of the body, corporeality and their relation to gender identity in prose written after 1989, a caesura of particular significance for corporeality. The text discusses literary images of gender identity on the basis of available studies that show the state of research in this field. The essay refers to the concept of the androgynous myth and also refers to the theories of the ‘opaque body’ and the ‘unwanted body’. The problematics contained in the text refer to the works of Olga Tokarczuk, Natasza Goerke, Izabela Filipiak and Andrzej Czcibor-Piotrowski, among others, which deal with the body-related gender identity. The study does not consider works that contain literary representations of gender identity that function in isolation from the body, but focuses on those that are central to the issues of corporeality. This stems from the assumption of the importance of the bodily experience in a literary work that should not only refer to the body, but also touch on the essence of humanity.

The comparison between the three Italian editions (1999, 2013, 2020) of Olga Tokarczuk’s Prawiek i inne czasy shows how the same translator gradually moved towards a more foreignizing approach, fixings errors and modernizing the language, though not eschewing a domesticating strategy. These re-editions seem to be linked with the growing symbolic capital and contractual power of the writer on the international arena, which arouse the need of more accurate translations and reinterpretations of her works.
Niniejszy artykuł ma na celu analizę praktyki na granicy pomiędzy retranslacją a korektą, realizowaną przez tłumaczy, którzy przerabiają swoje poprzednie tłumaczenia. Porównanie między trzema wydaniami włoskimi powieści Prawiek i inne czasy Olgi Tokarczuk (1999, 2013, 2020) pokazuje, że ta sama tłumaczka stopniowo zmierzała do egzotyzującego podejścia, przy tym poprawiając błędy i modernizując język, choć nie stroniąc od strategii udomawiającej. Nowe wydania włoskie zdają się być związane ze wzrastającym kapitałem symbolicznym i siłą umowną pisarki na scenie międzynarodowej, które rodzą potrzebę na dokładniejsze przekłady i reinterpretacje jej dzieł.

The article addresses the issue of translator’s notes in a Russian translation of Olga Tokarczuk’s “Bieguni” novel by Irina Adelʹgejm. The main text of the original, despite its abundance in borrowings, interjections and quotations in languages other than Polish, was not provided with explanatory notes by the author. The translator, however, provided the translation with 149 notes. They are notesexplaining terms, proper names, names of realities and others translated in the main text as well as notes explaining fragments formulated in the novel’s text in languages other than the language of the narration. On the basis of the undertaken analysis it is stated that the strategy of forming paratexts adopted by the translator is inconsistent. The secondary text designates an additional way of reading “Bieguni” novel, but it does not impose it as using the notes is just a possibility and depends on the reader’s choice.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest analiza destrukcji wizerunku osoby w dyskursie na przykładzie użycia argumentu ad hominem w komentarzach internautów dotyczących nagrody Nobla 2018 przyznanej w dziedzinie literatury polskiej pisarce i intelektualistce Oldze Tokarczuk. Wybrane do analizy komentarze zostały opublikowane na stronach polskich portali informacyjnych: „Dorzeczy”, „Gość Niedzielny”, „Wprost”, „Niezależna”, „Fronda”, „w Polityce” i „Salon24”. Badanie przeprowadzono w okresie od października 2019 do stycznia 2020 na 104 komentarzach, które stanowią materiał badawczy. Został on poddany analizie argumentacyjnej zaproponowanej przez szkoły francuską, szczegółowo wykorzystano opracowania dotyczące pojęcia etosu i argumentu ad hominem (Amossy, Charaudeau, Druetta i Paissa, Maingueneau). Badanie wykazało, iż argument ad hominem może odegrać istotną rolę w dekonstrukcji wizerunku publicznego. W komentarzach dotyczących Olgi Tokarczuk dominujący okazał się argument ad hominem personalny, który przybiera formę ataku osobowego (argument ad personam), oraz argument ad hominem okolicznościowy w różnych formach.
The aim of this article is to analyze the destruction of a person’s image on the example of ad hominem argument in readers’ comments reacting to the news of the attribution of the Nobel prize in Literature 2018 by the Polish writer and activist Olga Tokarczuk. Selected comments were published on the polish news websites: „Dorzeczy”, „Gość Niedzielny”, „Wprost”, „Niezalezna”, „Fronda”, „wPolityce” and „Salon24”. The study was conducted from October 2019 to January 2020 on 104 comments, which constitute research material. The corpus was subjected to the argumentative analysis proposed by the French school; the studies on the concept of ethos and the ad hominem argument were used in detail (Amossy, Charaudeau, Druetta i Paissa, Maingueneau). The results of the analysis showed that ad hominem argument can play an important role in deconstructing the public image. In the comments concerning Olga Tokarczuk, the dominant argument was the personal ad hominem argument, which takes the form of the personal attack (ad personam argument), and the circumstantial ad hominem argument in various forms.

Refleksja etnolingwistyczna korzysta z osiągnięć przekładoznawstwa w różnoraki sposób; jednym z nich jest spojrzenie na dwutekst lub wielotekst (obejmujący oryginalny tekst i jego przekłady) jako na spójną całość. O ile zazwyczaj podkreśla się nieuchronnie powstające w procesie tłumaczenia straty, wielotekst można także rozpatrywać pod kątem zysku (lub wzbogacenia) semantycznego, kiedy to przekład dopełnia lub rozwija oryginał. W artykule zaproponowano określenie trzech kategorii takiego zysku, opisując je w odniesieniu do instrumentarium językoznawstwa kognitywnego i etnolingwistyki kognitywnej (zwłaszcza koncepcji językowego obrazu świata): (1) poszerzenie pola semantycznego oryginału (tu rolę odgrywa profilowanie jako parametr wyróżnienia poznawczego), (2) wydobycie obecnej w oryginale wielości punktów widzenia oraz (3) wzmocnienie jego przesłania, co dzieje się za sprawą większego „natężenia głosu” jako konstruktu tekstowego. Kategorie te ilustrowane są różnymi sposobami mentalnego zobrazowania pojęcia czułości w angielskim, francuskim, portugalskim i rosyjskim tłumaczeniu wykładu noblowskiego Olgi Tokarczuk.
Ethnolinguistic inquiry makes ample use of insights proposed in translation studies: one of them is to consider the original and its translations as a coherent body of texts. However, if in most cases the original–translation relationship is viewed in terms of the inevitable loss that occurs in the process, this study proposes to search for semantic gains in the original–translation configuration, in the sense that the translation complements or develops the original. Three categories of such gain are proposed: (1) extension of the original’s semantics (which is effected through profiling as a parameter of cognitive salience), (2) retrieval of the multiple viewpoints present in the original, and (3) enhancement of the original’s meaning (effected through the “loudness” of the speaking “voice”). The three categories of gain are illustrated here with the various ways in which the concept of tenderness is profiled in the English, French, Portuguese, and Russian translations of Olga Tokarczuk’s Nobel lecture.

In her fiction Olga Tokarczuk evokes a spectrum of belief systems rooted in diverse religious traditions and entrenched in their literary‑theological redoubts. This article is an attempt of presenting an overview of the belief systems and worldviews that can be found in all of Tokarczuk's novels. It also examines her view of religion, including her opinions and reactions that belong primarily to the narrower context of the Polish hic and nunc, and the religious entanglements of literature. The fact that Olga Tokarczuk, herself a graduate of psychology, has done of lot reading in neighbouring fields such as anthropology may explain her persistent preoccupation with the soul. It holds the key both to her religious imaginarium and to her fictions. The empathic soul represents the potential transgressiveness of existence. It is also, in her own words, "the most tender narrator", a story‑telling 'persona' endowed with the faculty of fostering engagement and a sense of responsibility for the state of the world. The article argues that Tokarczuk's aim is to conjure up and activate its 'persona', or soul, and while making it interact with the reader's soul, initiate a chain reaction that breaks barriers between human beings, and reaches out beyond the confines of the human world. That process begins with her playing around with multiple religious traditions to demonstrate that their borders and defences are anything but impregnable.

This article discusses Olga Tokarczuk’s presence in Bulgaria, drawing on R. Cudak’s theory of reception while presenting translations, strategies of publication and promotion, literary and critical reflection, and non-literary forms of reception. Widescale, effective, and multi-dimensional promotion, reliable translation (S. Borisova, D. Hamze, H. Simeonova-Mitova, G. Krastev), as well as the openness and interest of readers, have created possibilities for an increase in the popularity of Olga Tokarczuk’s works in Bulgaria within the last two decades. The development in Bulgarian culture of critical and literary thought surrounding Tokarczuk’s works (M. Grigorova) is accompanied by the presence of book translations and other selected texts in leading newspapers and magazines („Literaturen vestnik”, „Panorama”, „Kultura”), constituting a significant platform for the popularization of Polish literature.
Предмет на анализ на статията е приемането на творчеството на Олга Токарчук в България. През призмата на теорията на рецепцията (Р. Цудак) са описани публикувани преводи, представени са преводачи, стратегии за публи-куване и популяризиране, начини на интерпретация. Литературно-критическото размишление (М. Григорова) е важно за приемането на текстовете на Токарчук, тъй като дава възможност за поставяне на произведенията и в широк исторически, литературен и културен контекст. Ефективното и многоизмерно популяризира- не, солидната преводаческа дейност (С. Борисова, Д. Хамзе, Х. Симеонова-Ми- това, Г. Кръстев), отвореността и интересът на читателите отварят възможности за засилено приемане на творчеството на авторката в България през последни-те две десетилетия. Издадените преводни книги и текстове на Токарчук, които се появяват редовно във водещи вестници и списания („Литературен вестник“, „Панорама“, „Култура“), представляват важна платформа за популяризиране на полската литература в България. Споменаха се и извънлитературни форми на присъствието на Токарчук в България, наред с други авторските срещи в София и Пловдив (2014).

In her literary work, Olga Tokarczuk consistently pays attention to the scandal of nonhuman animals’ involuntary suffering. Criticizing the ideology of human domination over nature and the unreflective replication of naturalized standards of behavior toward animals—manifesting, among others, in the tacit acceptance of the hunting “ritual” or the atrocities of industrial farming—she posits the el evation of empathy and insight to the rank of cognitive tools. In her essay “Maski zwierząt,” she encourages not only artists but everyone—starting with scientists who determine new research paradigms and ending with an average consumer of animal products—to use those tools in order to puncture our cultural prejudices and illusions and see beyond them the animal as an Other who is inconceivably close to us. This article attempts to respond to Tokarczuk’s challenge. It tries to decide the ontological status of nonhuman animals in her novels and short stories, reveal the horror of our perceptual inertia which enables systemic oppressions to flourish, and review some of the heterotopian alternatives imagined by Tokarczuk.

Artykuł w całościowy sposób przybliża rolę bp. Ignacego Tokarczuka w Episkopacie Polski w okresie prymasostwa kard. Stefana Wyszyńskiego. Chronologicznie obejmuje okres od nominacji hierarchy na ordynariusza przemyskiego – w 1965 roku, aż do śmierci prymasa – w maju 1981 roku. Analiza opiera się na wielu źródłach archiwalnych, pochodzących przede wszystkim ze zbiorów kościelnych. Kluczowe w tym zakresie były materiały z zasobu Archiwum Archidiecezjalnego Warszawskiego, zespół: Sekretariat Prymasa Polski, oraz z dzienników bp. I. Tokarczuka (znajdujących się w zbiorach ks. prof. Józefa Wołczańskiego) i kard. S. Wyszyńskiego (z Archiwum Archidiecezjalnego Gnieźnieńskiego). W tekście przybliżono m.in. aktywność ordynariusza przemyskiego w komisjach specjalistycznych Episkopatu, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem Komisji/Rady Głównej; wpływ bp. I. Tokarczuka na strategiczne decyzje podejmowane przez zgromadzenie polskich biskupów; antykomunistyczną postawę hierarchy unikalną na tle Episkopatu Polski; jego podejście do dialogu prowadzonego przez władze PRL ze Stolicą Apostolską w latach 1971-1978; stosunek biskupa do opozycji przedsierpniowej i „Solidarności”. Tekst udowadnia, że bp. I. Tokarczuk odgrywał w Episkopacie Polski w okresie prymasostwa S. Wyszyńskiego ważną rolę, o czym świadczyła nie tylko jego stała obecność w Komisji/Radzie Głównej, ale także fakt, że jego głos był szanowany przez wszystkich biskupów z Prymasem Tysiąclecia na czele. Autorzy tekstu mają nadzieję, że zawarte w nim informacje dotyczące roli ordynariusza przemyskiego w pracach Episkopatu Polski w latach 1965-1981 będą ważnym elementem przyszłej biografii hierarchy, która w dalszym ciągu czeka na swojego wnikliwego autora.
The article presents a comprehensive outlook on the role of Bishop Ignacy Tokarczuk in the Episcopate of Poland during the Primacy of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński. Chronologically, it covers the period from the hierarch’s appointment as Ordinary of Przemyśl (in 1965) until the Primate’s death (in May 1981). The analysis is based on a number of archival sources, primarily from church collections. Of key importance in this regard were materials from the holdings of the Warsaw Archdiocesan Archives, fond: Secretariat of the Primate of Poland, and from the diaries of Bishop I. Tokarczuk (located in the collection of Rev. Prof. Józef Wołczanski) and Cardinal S. Wyszyński (from the Gniezno Archdiocesan Archives). The text takes a closer look, among other things, at the activity of the Ordinary of Przemyśl in the specialized commissions of the Episcopate, with particular emphasis on the General Commission/Council; the influence of Bishop I. Tokarczuk on strategic decisions made by the conference of Polish bishops; the hierarch’s anti-communist stance – unique among the Polish Episcopate; his approach to the dialogue conducted by the authorities of the People’s Republic of Poland with the Holy See in 1971–1978; the bishop’s attitude toward the Pre-August Opposition and the Solidarity movement. The article proves that Bishop I. Tokarczuk played an important role in the Episcopate of Poland during the Primacy of S. Wyszynski’s, as evidenced not only by his constant presence in the General Commission/Council, but also by the fact that his voice was respected by all the bishops headed by the Primate of the Millennium. The authors share a hope that the information contained therein regarding the role of the Ordinary of Przemyśl in the work of the Polish Episcopate in 1965–1981 will be an important element of the future biography of the hierarch, which still awaits its potential insightful author.

Opis:
Translating culture-specific elements proves to be a challenging task, obliging the translator to refer to his/her extratextual knowledge. Such a necessity is especially noticeable in the case of onomastics which constitutes a vital part of Olga Tokarczuk’s novel Primeval and Other Times. Its English translator, Antonia Lloyd-Jones, decided to adopt only a few of translation strategies for proper nouns specified by Andrew Chesterman, which in most instances bereft the source text of its complexity.
Tłumaczenie elementów kulturowych okazuje się wyzwaniem, zmuszając tłumaczy do odnoszenia się do ich pozatekstowej wiedzy. Taka konieczność jest zauważalna zwłaszcza w przypadku nazw własnych, które stanowią pokaźną część powieści Olgi Tokarczuk „Prawiek i inne czasy”. Jej tłumaczka na angielski, Antonia Lloyd-Jones, zdecydowała się na użycie jedynie kilku strategii tłumaczeniowych wyszczególnionych przez Andrew Chestermana, co w wielu przypadkach pozbawiło tekst jego złożoności.

The article chronologically reconstructs the process of reception of Olga Tokarczuk’s prose in China with particular focus on the period after she received the Nobel Prize for Literature. The author invokes utterances of the translators, publishers and critics to demonstrate how Tokarczuk’s works fare on the Chinese book market in terms of marketing, in the context of sales results and their presence online, which elements of her writings are closest to the Chinese readers and why, what global literary and cultural discourses her work is assigned to and what challenges the Chinese translators are faced with when translating her prose.

Autor analizuje i interpretuje najważniejszy literacki tekst dendrologiczny polskiej literatury powojennej, czyli dramat Drzewo Wiesława Myśliwskiego. Rozpoznaje go jako typowy przykład symbiotyczno-toksycznego związku między Polską i literaturą, decydującego także o tym, jak funkcjonuje w polskiej literaturze świat roślin. Sytuacja zmienia się po roku 1989. Jej konsekwencją jest dzisiejsza, ekologiczna i polityczna ekspansja ekokrytyki, którą najskuteczniej reprezentują utwory Olgi Tokarczuk. Obok nich pojawiają się w tekście inne dendrologiczne tropy  reprezentowane w polskiej literaturze współczesnej między innymi przez teksty Andrzeja Stasiuka, Michała Witkowskiego, Wojciecha Wencla, Jana Leończuka i Andrzeja Sapkowskiego. Próba ich uporządkowania wydaje się zarówno potrzebna, jak i nieskuteczna.
The article critically considers Wiesław Myśliwski’s play "Drzewo" [The Tree], the most important text of Polish post-war dendrological literature. The play is viewed as a typical example of the symbiotic-cum-toxic relationship between Poland and its literature, a relationship that also influences the way the world of plants is represented in other Polish literary texts. The situation in this particular case changed after 1989. These days we observe a genuine expansion of ecocriticism and its political consequences, notably in the works of Olga Tokarczuk. Apart from her writings, dendrological tropes are represented in Polish contemporary literature in the texts of Andrzej Stasiuk, Michał Witkowski, Wojciech Wencel, Jan Leończuk, and Andrzej Sapkowski. The taxonomy of all their dendrological tropes seems as urgent to be conducted as it is, in fact, impossible to achieve.

The author attempts to reconstruct the spiritual structure that emerges from the literary work of Olga Tokarczuk. In his opinion, the direct context of this structure is a sense of a crisis or even the twilight of contemporary Western culture. For this reason, Tokarczuk seeks a paradoxical synthesis of antinomies which are tearing the modern world apart and which grow out of radically different intellectual, religious and civilisational traditions. Above all, she aims to combine the rational and empirical tradition of the European Enlightenment with prophetic and messianic currents, as well as elements of folk magic. For Tokarczuk, what has become a model of such a fusion is eighteenth-century Podolia, a region in the eastern borderlands of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, where numerous forms of Jewish and Christian mysticism and messianism were born in stormy historical circumstances.
Autor podejmuje – z perspektywy religioznawczej oraz filozoficznej – próbę rekonstrukcji struktury duchowej, która wyłania się z literackiej twórczości Olgi Tokarczuk. W jego przekonaniu bezpośredni kontekst owej konstrukcji stanowi poczucie kryzysu, a nawet zmierzchu dzisiejszej kultury Zachodu. Z tego względu Tokarczuk zmierza ku paradoksalnej syntezie antynomii rozdzierających współczesny świat, które wyrastają z radykalnie odmiennych tradycji intelektualnych, religijnych i cywilizacyjnych. Przede wszystkim Tokarczuk chodzi o zespolenie racjonalnej i empirycznej tradycji europejskiego oświecenia z nurtami profetycznymi i mesjańskimi, jak również elementami ludowej magii. Wzorem takiego rodzaju fuzji stało się dla pisarki osiemnastowieczne Podole – kraina położona na wschodnich rubieżach Rzeczpospolitej Obojga Narodów, gdzie w burzliwych okolicznościach rodziły się liczne formy mistycyzmu żydowskiego i chrześcijańskiego.

L’article porte sur le motif de la plique polonaise et ses fonctions – mimétique, diégétique et idéologique – dans le conte « Les enfants verts » d’Olga Tokarczuk. Sa figuration est conforme au savoir sur ce phénomène qu’on avait au XVIIe siècle : pour les uns, il était dû au manque d’hygiène ; pour les autres, c’était une maladie causée par des forces insolites. Liée aux enfants verts venus d’un ailleurs inconnu et dotée de pouvoirs magiques, la plique fait glisser le récit historique vers le merveilleux et le fantastique, en créant une nouvelle forme littéraire: une histoire bizarroïde. L’écrivaine s’en sert aussi pour parler de l’altérité et de sa conception écocentrique du monde.
Niniejszy artykuł koncentruje się na motywie kołtuna polskiego i jego funkcjach – mimetycznej, diegetycznej i ideologicznej – w opowiadaniu Zielone dzieci Olgi Tokarczuk. Jego przedstawienie w tekście jest zgodne z wiedzą o tym zjawisku w XVII w.: dla jednych był on skutkiem braku higieny, dla innych chorobą wywołaną przez siły nadprzyrodzone. Powiązany z zielonymi dziećmi z nieznanej krainy i obdarzony magicznymi mocami, kieruje narrację historyczną w stronę cudowności i fantastyki, tworząc nową formę literacką – opowiadanie bizarne. Pisarka wykorzystuje motyw także do rozważań na temat inności i swojej ekocentrycznej koncepcji świata.

Georgi Gospodinow to jeden z najczęściej tłumaczonych pisarzy bułgarskich po 1989 roku. Magda Pytlak wskazuje zmianę polskiej recepcji literatury bułgarskiej poprzez dwa ze wskaźników jego sukcesu - to nagrody literackie i renomowane wydawnictwo, w którym wychodzi „Fizyka smutku” w 2018 r. W artykule przedstawia się recepcję twórczości Georgiego Gospodinowa w Polsce w ujęciu chronologicznym i bierze pod uwagę różne gatunki twórczości Gospodinowa (publikowane w prasie, w antologiach i wydania książkowe), rolę tłumaczy, spotkania autorskie z pisarzem, ich odbicia w prasie. Jednym z elementów jego wizytówki w Polsce jest przyjaźń z Olgą Tokarczuk, komentowana jako pozycja do Literackiej Nagrody Nobla.
Георги Господинов е един от найчесто превежданите български писатели след 1989 г. Рецепцията му в Полша бележи успех, който според неговата преводачка и изследователка Магда Питляк показва промяна в полската рецепция на българската литература. Два от посочените показатели на успеха са литературните награди и реномираното издателство, в което излиза “Физика на тъгата” през 2018 г. Настоящата статия проследява в хронологичен ред развоя на полската рецепция на творчеството на Георги Господинов, като взема под внимание различните видове публикации на творчеството на Господинов (в пресата, в антологии и в книжни издания), ролята на преводачите и интерпретаторите, на срещите с писателя и медийните отражения. Един от елементите в неговата визитна картичка е приятелството с Олга Токарчук, този факт се коментира в контекста на възможността авторът да получи Нобелова награда за литература.
Georgi Gospodinov is one of the most translated Bulgarian writers after 1989. Magda Pytlak points to the change in the reception of Bulgarian literature in Poland using two indicators of his success — literary awards and a renowned publishing house which published The Physics of Sorrow in 2018. The article presents the reception of Georgi Gospodinov’s work in Poland in chronological order and takes into account various genres of Gospodinov’s work (in the press, in anthologies, and as separate books), the role of his translators, the writer’s public appearances and their press reception. One of the elements of his showcase in Poland is his friendship with Olga Tokarczuk, regarded as an aspiration for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
