The article offers various systematisations of career theories. In the most general spectrum of classification, two criteria can be found: the content of the theory: content theories; process theories; content-and-process theories, and the constitutive factors of career: prescriptive theories; lifecycle theories. The highlighted classifications of career theories integrate and synthesise accounts, whose structural contents indicate a variety of different sources and cognitive perspectives, constituting a review of the thought regarding the career development process in a particular historical context, as a time period in which they have been established. Various contexts of apprehending the career issue lead to changes in its “theorising”.

Opis:

Two major approaches have dominated the field of the sociology of development: theories of modernization, which focus on developed countries, and theories of development, which concentrate on Latin America, Africa, and East Asia. The social transformations in China, Russia, and the other European former socialist countries since 1989, however, have challenged both the traditional approaches of Sociology of Development with a series of new issues: how should one evaluate the various pathways to development in different countries and regions? how should one examine the state–society relationship in social development and transition? how can one deal with the social inequality in the process of development? These topics have expanded the scope of the Sociology of Development and provided an opportunity to construct new theories. I suggest that, in response to the practice conditions of ongoing socioeconomic transformation, new theories of transition, in addition to theories of modernization and theories of development, is the imperative need in the field of the sociology of development.

The article analyses texts regarding the opera character, or indirectly linked to it, by a number of authors from the late eighteenth century to the last decades of the nineteenth century: Sulzer, Rousseau, Hoffmann, Stendhal, Baudelaire, Wagner. The analysis indicates a strong multilateral involvement of the reflection on the topic of character in contemporary aesthetic views and anthropological concepts.

Opis:

This paper offers a specific analysis of speculation bubbles in the economic history of the world, and then tries to identify the causes and effects of the speculation bubble on the real estate market in the USA, which was the main cause of the subprime crisis. The first part of the paper aims at defining the phenomenon of economic fluctuations and speculation bubble and presenting the most popular theories of overinvestment, which emphasize the importance of speculation phenomenon. The next part of the article describes direct causes of subprime crisis. Special attention has been paid to the processes taking place on the real estate market in the USA in the past fifteen years. The final section of the paper is a synthesis of theorems by the economists of Austrian School and Hyman Minsky, and then confronting them with real processes in the US economy in recent years.

The aim of this article is to show ethical aspects of the so-called normative accounting theory (NT), with particular emphasis on the ethical and normative theory (ENT), important for the development of accounting as a science, taking into consideration its social function. Attention is focused on the so-called axiological layer with regard to the methodological foundation (pragmatic methods and related metascience) concerning the work of theorists in Western Europe. Although in the years 70s shall be considered as unscientific and begin the process of domination positive theory of accounting. It seems that the 21st century has brought about a rebirth of specific ethical and social topics in the field of accounting. The importance and usefulness of ethics in accounting have been growing due to changes in accounting and social needs driven by a turbulent environment, as well as changes in science.

This article aims at considering the question whether various migration theories, especially in the fields of demography and sociology, could be useful in the analysis of migration from Poland to Australia in the 1980s. The author is not able to propose definitive answers, however he suggests that the division between political and economic migration, commonly used by researchers, does not provide an effective instrument for describing this specific social group. The article shows that the majority of Poles who did have an official refugee status did not in fact fit well into the definition of a refugee. Meanwhile, among the migrants who did not obtain the refugee status, one could find many active members of the Solidarity movement and also people persecuted by the Polish authorities. Within the research on migration motives, migration transfer, adaptation processes and, to some extent, political activity of Polish migrants in Australia, the author found the following models most useful and applicable: various social network theories, Oded Stark's relative deprivation model, the model of decision-making process developed by Gerald Haberkorn or the concept of Oddyssean and Rubicon refugees by Danièle Joly. None of these theories can provide a universal tool which could allow the researcher to cover all methodological problems related to the subject of Polish migration to Australia between 1980 and 1989 – especially in the area of understanding migrants’ public activity in the new country.

The paper is a reply to the polemic with my article "The Structure of Scientific Theories and Systems of Values", which presented a number of analogies between methodological and metaethical problems. These analogies can be seen if we acknowledge the information surplus of evaluative statements in comparison to normative statements (similarly in science theories are stronger than observational statements), which is indicated by the examples of actual moral questions. The basis for the polemic is the fact that its authors deny the existence of this surplus, claiming that evaluations are equivalent to and not stronger than norms. Moreover, as they reduce metaethics to the issues of meaning, and methodology to the issues of justification, they have to deny the possibility of these two domains meeting on the ground of similar problems. The paper also illustrates the reasons for a modification of meanings of certain philosophical terms that appeared in my previous article.

Regardless of the fact that economics distinguishes itself from other social sciences by a high level of formal deductive modelling, it is a social science due to the essence of the economic process where a human is a subject and an object at the same time. In recent years this issue has been more frequently emphasized by economists in ongoing discussions. In the discussions, a good deal of time is devoted to economic models and, mainly, their relations with the socioeconomic reality and coherence of empirical evidence. The article presents a thesis that some mainstream economic theories have not always constituted the background to their practical applications, which led - and still can lead- to the dogmatic and inflexible use of model solutions for economic phenomena which are difficult to forecast in a non-variant rigid model. The aim is to critically analyse the beliefs about the usefulness of universal economic models in the economic reality advocated by mainstream economists, and to prove that not all economic models have constituted the background to their practical applications.

The article attempts to analyse the Polish experience relating to the integration of immigrants in a broad macro-historical context, mainly European. The article starts with the presentation of the theoretical conceptions of integration. Next, different challenges of the European socio-historical context of integration and integration policies in Europe are presented. Subsequently, the concepts and practices of the integration in Poland as well as the present state and the prospects of development of the field are discussed in relation to internal and external conditions. The text shows the integration of immigrants as affected, on one hand, by Europeanization and globalization, and on the other, by the Polish special circumstances linked both to a wider social context and to the characteristics of the immigration to Poland.

After the London bombings in July 2005, the concern of terrorism scholars and policy makers has turned to “home-grown” terrorism and potential for political violence from within the states. “Radicalization” became a new buzz word. This article follows a number of reviews of the literature on radicalization and offers another angle for looking at this research. First, it discusses the term “radicalization” and suggests the use of the following definition of radicalization as a process by which a person adopts belief systems which justify the use of violence to effect social change and comes to actively support as well as employ violent means for political purposes. Next, it proposes to see the theories of radicalization focusing on the individual and the two dimensions of his/her motivation: whether that motivation is internal or external and whether it is due to personal choice or either internal (due to some psychological traits) or external compulsion. Though not all theories fall neatly within these categories, they make it possible to make comparisons of contributions from a variety of different areas thus reflecting on the interdisciplinary nature of the study of terrorism in general and radicalization as a part of it.

Opis:

Basing on the two most influential theories in the literature on idiom comprehension (Glucksberg 2001; Vega Moreno 2003, 2004, 2005) as well as on the account of familiar metaphor comprehension (Wilson – Carston 2006), the present author proposes an account of comprehension of familiar idioms as metaphorical expressions. Unfamiliar metaphors are comprehended on-line in a relevance-guided comprehension procedure which involves adjustment of concepts encoded in idiom constituents. Opis:

In the paper, I present one of the most important contemporary attempts of defeating fundamental problems concerning justification in the context of doxastic assumption. Goldman rejects thesis that we cannot take account of anything except insofar we have believes about it, assumption accepted by foundations and coherence theories. Instead of faulty (above mentioned) views, Goldman indicates reliable cognitive processes as perception, memory, and reasoning. In my paper, I present the whole gamut of arguments against Goldman’s theory but as decisive I consider faults on the ground of reliability concerning perception.
W artykule prezentuję jedną z najważniejszych współczesnych prób pokonania zasadniczych problemów związanych z kwestią uzasadniania w kontekście tzw. założenia doksastycznego (doxastic). Goldman, odrzucając tezę, iż w uzasadnieniu nie możemy brać pod uwagę niczego innego niż przekonania, tezę przyjmowaną przez prezentowane w artykule stanowiska fundacjonistyczne i koherencjonistyczne, przyjmuje pogląd eksternalistyczny. Zamiast wadliwych (wyżej wspomnianych) stanowisk Goldman wskazuje na reliabilne procesy poznawcze w postaci przede wszystkim ujęć percepcyjnych, ale i danych pamięciowych oraz rozumowań. W artykule przedstawiam wachlarz argumentów krytycznych wobec koncepcji Goldmana, ale za zasadniczy uznaję brak podstaw w jego teorii dla akceptacji wiarygodności procesów percepcyjnych.

Celem artykułu jest zwrócenie uwagi na możliwość wykorzystania wybranych konstruktów teorii wymiany, do modelowania interakcji społecznych. Nie byłoby nic nowego w tym ujęciu, gdyby nie fakt zakotwiczenia rozważań w kontekście potrzeb, a ściślej mówiąc, dostarczania bezpieczeństwa i wzajemnym udziale w jego kreowaniu. Autorka zakłada, że bezpieczeństwo − zdefiniowane jako usługa dostarczana przez państwo w sposób kolegialny − może być istotnym przedmiotem wymiany społecznej. Przez prześledzenie wybranych teorii potrzeb, hierarchizujących konieczność ich zaspokajania oraz przywołanie głównych tez twórców teorii wymiany, podjęto próbę ukierunkowania rozważań na rodzaje interakcji oraz na to, co warunkuje ich istnienie.
The aim of this study is to draw the attention to the possibility of using selected constructs of the exchange theory to the model of social interactions. There would be nothing new in this approach, if not the fact anchor considerations in the context of the needs, and more specifically the provision of the security and mutual participation in its creation. The author assumes that security defined as a service provided by the state in a collegial way can be an important subject of the social exchange. Through selected theory of needs which hierarchies and also recalls the main founders of the exchange theory an attempt to focus discussion on the forms of the interaction, and on the factors which determine their existence was made.

This paper focuses on the negative narratives of the transformation in Poland, which describe the Round Table talks in 1989 as having been an act, showing at least the domination of the communist leaders, if not the betrayal by the opposition leaders. This is continued in the institutionalized procedures of lustration, in searching for secret police agents amongst others. The persistence of the topic as the foremost in the post-1989 political life of democratic Poland is explained by reference to the dramaturgical structure of the transformation as an emancipation that should have led to a cathartic culmination. In fact, in Poland the social drama (Turner 1974 ) had started much earlier, witnessed by the summer strikes of 1980 and the establishment of Solidarność but was spoiled by martial law which was introduced by the communists on January 13th, 1981. Thus the freezing stage followed instead, while the emancipation was effected ten years later from above as a result of negotiated compromise. Apart from that emancipation, this meant the introduction of a capitalist economy while political freedom and democracy were the only elements kept on the publicly agreed upon agenda of the anti-communist movement. The negative narratives result from frustration, which in turn leads to symbolic lustration attempts at scapegoating the opposition leader(s).

It ponders the attractiveness of the realist position both for the social and personal dimension of human existence by considering such issues as freedom, autonomy, alienation, truth, receptivity, and community. Finally, it points to the ecological problem of the rightly understood “inactivity,” which is contrasted with the late modern hyperactivity of social constructivism.

Oridinary describing and explaining of everyday behavior became an object of systematic psychological study in the late-40s. The results create a picture of folk psychology as a primitive version of scientific psychology, kind of "naive" theory which is rather false. The picture represents folk psychology only as a speculative artefact, but there is also another notion of folk psychology as a basic conceptual schema which organizes experience. The specific scientific approach to folk psychology is described, some arguments against the view of folk psychology as a theory are pointed and the alternative notion of folk psychology is demonstrated in this article.

The paper explores the issue of the application of selected theories of European inte-gration (intergovernmental and supranational) to explain the position of the Polish Justice Law and Justice party with regard to the functioning and future of the EU. The party, led by Jaroslaw Kaczynski, is a political formation which is actively engaged in the debate on the shape of the EU, pertaining to both its theoretical and practical policies. The ongoing debate has taken the form of battle between neo-functionalism and state-centric intergovernmental approach. The author believes that the main theory that explains the Law and Justice party’s approach to European issues is inter-governmentalism which aligns well with the concept of “Europe of Motherlands” adopted by the party. It proclaims the primacy of nation state and its interests in the process of European integration. This is tantamount to refuting the view that the EU can develop only in accordance with the neo-functionalism’s spill-over logic which will eventually lead to the formation of a European federation.

The author analyzes the structure of financing enterprises in Poland in 1992-2005. She looks at her findings through the lens of key business financing theories as well as data yielded by international research. In doing so, Nawrot aims to fill a gap in international research because most other researchers dealing with the subject focus on emerging markets in South America and Asia rather than Central and Eastern Europe. The paper features a research method based on a detailed analysis of individual sources of financing in the analyzed period, taking into account changes in enterprises’ ownership structures as well as changes in the choice of sources of funds in the context of the overall changes in the economy. Nawrot’s analyses reveal that changes in the structure of financing Polish enterprises-though consistent with international business financing theories and congruent with the results of analyses made for other emerging markets-largely stemmed from the specific conditions in which these companies operated in the analyzed period, following market-oriented reforms in the Polish economy.

The purpose of this paper is to determine, which of the independent scientific disciplines dealing with issues related to the European Union offers the research approach most apt for constructing theories of European integration and whether the basic theoretical paradigms of this discipline are sufficient to construct them. In order to achieve this, the following four perspectives of scientific disciplines have been analysed: political sciences, law, economics and sociology. The results of these considerations indicate that political sciences has the greatest influence on shaping the theories of European integration. Next, in order to the decide, whether the basic theoretical paradigms of political sciences are sufficient to construct theories of European integration, such theories as federalism, functionalism and intergovernmental approach have been analysed. To conclude, it can be said that in the case of federalism and intergovernmental approach – they are, and in the case of functionalism they are not.

This article attempts to show the asymmetry in the framework of theoretical sociology. This asymmetry concerns the unambiguous domination of Western sociological theoretical systems over theoretical systems from outside theWest’s boundaries.We have in mind here the intellectual domination of representatives of countries of the North over countries of the South. It may be agreed simultaneously that such an asymmetry is acceptable and reasonable, and that it is unjust to ascribe unique truth and appropriateness to the theories of the North in explaining all the phenomena of the whole world-North and South alike. Thus in this article we present, in the historical perspective, selected sociological theories-in our opinion the most important ones-which confirm the validity of the domination of sociological theories of Europe and North America. We reach back to the first sociological systems of, among others, Auguste Comte, Herbert Spencer, Emile Durkheim, and Max Weber, and the theories of social development. These latter are important in that it is precisely within their framework that two kinds of theories emerged with clear input from scholars of the South: dependency theory and endogenous theories of social development.

This paper explores the extent to which stress affects work progress. Given the fact that stress affects most human activities, thus it affects people's work progress and it examines variables which are related with each of the stress indices and work progress. Stressful items include marriages, job change, and relocation to a new city, death of relatives, sleeplessness and weak nerves. This paper is taken from a research work done at the PNU and is of a post-facto. Data have been gathered via field surveys and after testing hypotheses, it was found that stress was effective on staffs; work efficiency. Meanwhile, it was found out that there was a need for its management.

The Polish version of the article was published in “Roczniki Humanistyczne,” vol. 57 (2009), issue 3. This paper seeks to prove that there are no grounds in the Poetics to ascribe to Aristotle the views identified with the literary theory of drama because he does not identify drama with a verbal work. On the contrary, the spectacular dimension of tragedy is for Aristotle one of the distinctive feature of tragedy vis-à-vis epos, which for him is only – to use our modern terms—a literary work. Thus, the visual element (ὄψις or ὄψεως κόσμος) is not only very important for Aristotle, but it is even a necessary component of tragedy. Indeed there are some remarks in the Poetics that suggest tragedy may exist without ὄψις, but this is only regarded as a hypothetical situation, analogical to the one when he argues that tragedy may exist without characters. In fact, however, both ὄψις and characters are regarded by Aristotle as necessary components of tragedy. He makes his considerations assuming both components. At the same time, he treats tragedy not as a text but a theatrical work in which mimesis can be conducted by the “acting persons” (πράττοντες). They are understood not as literary figures, but as stage embodiments of the heroes whose psychophysical ontic paradigms are actors.

Opis:

 The Polish national cinema is famous for its critical approach towards the government and official authorities and implicit references to the current social and political situation. The Polish Film School, The Cinema of Moral Concern or the works of such great auteurs as Andrzej Wajda or Krzysztof Kieślowski (esp. in his early work) bear that mark and must be analyzed in the context of politics. With the exception of historical movies, after 1989 Polish filmmakers openly distanced themselves from politics. The few exceptions that were released employ genre formulas to express political views. In my article I would like to focus on the usage of conspiracy paranoid cinema in Entanglement (2011), Traffic Department (2013), Closed Circuit (2013), and Secret Wars (2014). A brief history of paranoid conspiracy thinking in Poland precedes the analysis of the aforementioned movies. I also address the question to what extent the genre formulas shaped the world vision and ideology that inform those productions.

Opis:

The article concerns theoretical considerations on psychological concepts of learning in the context of e-learning. The author begins the theoretical analysis by reviewing the literature, including behavioural, cognitive and humanistic theories. Based on a detailed analysis, cognitivism is indicated as a theory that has particular application in e-learning, especially due to the continuity of the teaching process and adapting the content to the student’s level. An example of a cognitive model is D. Kolb’s model, which can be effectively used in e-learning because it includes closed cognitiveexperimental processes. The basic argument for adopting cognitive theories as dominant in e-learning is their ability to maintain the continuity of the educational process, which can be effectively implemented via e-learning platforms. A key element connecting cognitive theories with e-learning is the Multiple Coding Theory, which suggests that the transfer of knowledge becomes more effective when it takes place through different channels, enabling reception through several senses.

Opis:

Taking a practice theoretical approach and building on the research conducted with a group of people who live their lives on the streets of two Polish cities, this paper provides an account of the homeless city dwellers’ mode of emplacement. It offers the terms licensed, invisible, motile, material, relational, affective, and ad hoc mooring to describe how homeless people establish a place of and for various activities that make up their everyday practice of inhabiting the city. While highlighting the accomplishments of homeless places, the paper also underscores their tentativeness and instability. It situates the homeless mode of emplacement within a wider landscape of normative urban geography, against which the ways homeless people establish themselves in place are often judged out-of-place. It attends to the role that this transgressive potential plays in limiting homeless dwellers’ capabilities for mooring and considers how they might be enhanced.

The issue of culture, while present in the Polish scholarship on the Solidarity movement, remains untheorized. Explorations of culture in the literature are largely descriptive rather than explanatory in nature. In this article, I examine the opportunities that arise when we assume a cultural theoretical perspective in the sociological study of social movements. I focus primarily on the available definitions of culture and their relevance to the problem. I consider the role of culture from three perspectives: first, as the cause of the social movement’s emergence; second, as the movement’s internal organizing structure; and third, as a consequence of the movement. The issues discussed in this essay will be related both to the current state of the theory as well as the ongoing and potential studies of the Solidarity movement, thus providing an illustration to the subject at hand and paving the way for research on other Polish movements. The article concludes with a discussion of the benefits and drawbacks of the cultural approach in the sociology of social movements and considers its place within the scope of the Polish research on the subject.

“Traditional” or “Modern”? Methodological Dilemmas of the Contemporary Researchers of Old Polish Literature. Part One: General Remarks and the Case of Postcolonial CriticismThis paper shows the personal reflection of its authors upon the methodological contexts of cultural and literary studies concerning Old Polish literature. Especially those contexts that eagerly and sophisticatedly – though quite superficially – apply the so called “modern” literary theories to the analyses and interpretations of Old Polish texts and – at the same time – disregard their very historical backgrounds. The authors present a fairly sceptical approach towards the blind and unjustifiable, although fashionable, application of “modern” criticism in the given field of research. Instead they emphasise the contextual, secondary character of the possible modern theoretical implications, as  well as the particular, specific character of Old Polish writings. Moreover, wider social factors influencing the methodological decisions taken by the academic community in question (who undoubtedly still favour the traditional, philological method of research and strongly distances itself from the contemporary theoretical thought) have been discussed in great detail. The enclosed analysis of the recent controversial book Fantomowe ciało króla (The Phantom Body of a King, 2011) by Jan Sowa, which deals with the Old Polish history, society, and culture, strongly influenced by the application of modern criticism, in particular the postcolonial part of it, served both as an example of the authors’ argumentation and, at the same time, a warning.

The origin of the radiation chemistry history is contemporary with the X-rays and uranic rays discoveries. The complexity of the phenomena induced by the radiation effects, which involve electrons, ions and free radicals and a specific spatial distribution of the energy deposit along the tracks, was progressively understood, particularly when pulse radiolysis and time-resolved detection permitted to observe the short-lived transient species and to explain the chemical or biochemical mechanims. Marital satisfaction is acknowledged as a prime indicator of matrimonial quality, and has consequently been studied in recent decades to identify and examine its determinants. Although existential issues from four contemporary existential counseling theories have been recognized for their potential to enhance matrimonial quality, existing literature reveals a complete absence of experimental research to evaluate the effects of the existential issues on marital satisfaction. Hence, this study aims to fill the gap by examining the effects of the psycho-educational training based on existential issues on marital satisfaction among Iranian women. In course of the interventional research, sixty married women from two health centers of the Tehran Municipality were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups, and then provided with 7.5 total hours of existential issues training over five sessions. The findings show that the training resulted in significant positive enhancements in the marital satisfaction of the experimental group in comparison with the control group.

The aim of this study is to analyse selected theories of crime of an integrated nature (biosocial), functioning in criminology, from the perspective of explaining the conditions of the phenomenon of female crime. It was pointed out that single-factor theories older than integrated theories (anthropological, biological, sociological, psychological), assuming in their assumptions only one category of variables, occurring in the analysis of the course of female criminal activities, did not contribute sufficiently to the explication of the studied, negative phenomenon, giving the inducement to search and develop a different category of theory. Therefore, the article attempts to determine whether the integrated (multi-factorial) theories, presented on the example of the considerations of two criminologists: A. Walsh and D.W. Denno, taking into account the findings of the former single-factor concepts, allow to find a comprehensive solution to the doubts, concentrating around the issue of conditions and specificity of the development of the phenomenon of female crime, which for several decades has occupied the activity of criminologists in Poland and worldwide.
Celem niniejszego opracowania jest analiza wybranych teorii przestępczości o charakterze zintegrowanym (biospołecznych), funkcjonujących w kryminologii, z perspektywy wyjaśnienia uwarunkowań fenomenu przestępczości kobiet. Wskazano, że starsze od teorii zintegrowanych teorie jednoczynnikowe (antropologiczne, biologiczne, socjologiczne, psychologiczne), przyjmujące w swych założeniach tylko jedną kategorię zmiennych, występującą w analizie przebiegu kobiecych aktywności przestępczych, nie przyczyniły się w wystarczającym stopniu do eksplikacji badanego, negatywnego fenomenu, dając asumpt do poszukiwania oraz rozwoju odmiennej kategorii teorii. W artykule podjęto zatem próbę ustalenia, czy teorie zintegrowane (wieloczynnikowe), przedstawione na przykładzie rozważań dwojga kryminologów: A. Walsha oraz D.W. Denno, uwzględniające ustalenia dawniejszych koncepcji jednoczynnikowych, pozwalają na znalezienie kompleksowego rozstrzygnięcia wątpliwości koncentrujących się wokół zagadnienia uwarunkowań i specyfiki rozwoju zjawiska przestępczości kobiet, które od kilku dekad zajmują kryminologów w Polsce i na świecie.

The commentary focuses on Gould’s idea of NOMA, according to which science and theology are two Non-Overlapping Magisteria. The term “non-overlapping” is appropriate because methods of validation of claims in these two fields of intellectual investigation. are different, not because the areas of investigation should be different. The author was once an active atheist, in Poland; now he is a practicing theist, belonging to a Reform synagogue in the United States. He thinks that Gould’s idea, if universally accepted, could help to reduce intensity of dangerous doctrinal confrontations between theists and atheists, and between different groups of theists. The commentary ends by a quote from a statement about desirable collaboration between religion and science, made by Pope John Paul.

Opis:

Regions-based theories of space aim—among others—to define points in a geometrically appealing way. The most famous definition of this kind is probably due to Whitehead. However, to conclude that the objects defined are points indeed, one should show that they are points of a geometrical or a topological space constructed in a specific way. This paper intends to show how the development of mathematical tools allows showing that Whitehead’s method of extensive abstraction provides a construction of objects that are fundamental building blocks of specific topological spaces.

The article discusses the question of political implications of French feminist theories, also known as feminist avant-garde. Referring to the strategic re-reading of the concept French Feminism by Christine Delphy, it is argued that such projects as écriture féminine have been appropriated by postmodern Anglo-American critique, which tends to fetishize the strategies of displacement and aestheticization of the political field. The aim of the article is to examine whether contemporary feminist theories can take up the challenge of French feminist avant-garde by going back to its political roots.

This study analysed the theoretical foundations utilised by past empirical research in order to understand the pedagogical strategies used in schools for promoting positive behaviour. The analyses also include how pedagogical theories underpinned past research on positive behaviour enhancement. Samples for this study were academic papers obtained from four main databases: the Australian Education Index, British Education Index, ERIC (Educational Research Information Centre) and Scopus. By using a systematic review technique, a total number of 143 papers were found to be relevant for further analysis. Results revealed that four theoretical models dominate the studies examined, namely Applied Behavioural Analysis, Social Capital theory, Culturally Responsive Classroom Management, and Ecological Systems theory. This study recommends understanding of those theories is important in designing modules for positive behaviour enhancement in schools.

Discussed is moral aspect of aggression from the perspective of the following psychological theories: instinct-impulse, evolutionary, socio-cognitive and learning. The results of recent research on moral evaluation of aggressive behavior and aggressor are cited. Described are the criteria that are followed by people for assessing violent acts and those under which some persons are defined as “bad” and others as “good”. Presented is the issue of contemporary approach to the hostile and instrumental aggression, and of their effectiveness as the modes of action. In the curriculum of teachers’ education two most important trends can be distinguished – firstly, general humanistic knowledge that allows to actively participate in the culture and which makes it possible to meritorically and formally introduce others into it; secondly, the knowledge and technical and methodological skills that cover tasks and ways of teaching and educating as well as subject methodologies and practices. In order to well organise (at various levels) social life it is necessary to have appropriate predispositions and a good knowledge about history and culture of one’s own and others’ societies as well as the ability of applying this knowledge in concrete educational situations, while in order to be able to well organise learning processes it is necessary to have an extensive knowledge about psycho-physical development of a human being and technical and methodological skills, including the newest IT and communication technologies. This is supposed to motivate a teacher to show an organizational initiative and at least, to be flexible and effective while making use of the enormous “supermarket” of theories. Therefore, why then, since long, has this rather obvious task incurred such various and even opposing solution proposals? Why is a modern teacher not happy about the enormous “supermarket” of theories?

A reading of many recent publications shows that theoretical concerns in the field of linguistics have declined, even though the founders of the discipline all emphasised the central importance of its role. This article aims to show how linguistic description has progressed thanks to the different theoretical tools that have been developed in the course of research. From this point of view, this article illustrates the following facts: lexicon, semantics and syntax are not separate instances but together form the units that are sentences. The elements of sentences must be described in terms of the set of properties that characterise them. This is the case for regular sequences. Finally, one of the promising objectives consists in finding a reasoned classification of fixed sequences. Linguistics, like any science, cannot do without theoretical tools.

Social sciences, understood as critical and not neutral by nature, they should be equipped with specific competencies and sensivity. C.  W. Mills these comptence define as sociological imagination – which is study of the relationship of history and biography, Giddens interpreted it as three basic senses: historical, anthropological, critical. The translation into political science would be a political theories imagination, it consist,, among over things like a: historicity of political phenomena, antisubstansialism, research self-awareness. Definition of political theories imagination I propose in the context of Wiktor Marzec’s paper Rebelion and Reaction, which is a study from field of historical sociology, it’s in itself a lot of inspiration for theorists of politics: research, theoretical and methodological. It is worth considering – in this context – fundamental categories of political science, like political subjectivity and the political, also revalidate in their range.

Song portraits of a woman-spinner The article which treats about the portraits of woman-spinners is devoted to a comparison of verbal-musical works, which are partly united by the common text (fragment of J.W. Goethe’s Faustus – and in particular the song sung by Margaret at the spinningwheel), and which in part refer to the common image – namely that of a spinning woman. In contemporary theories, the image of a spinning woman is often used as a handy symbol of creativity, and particularly female creativity. However the 19th century popularity of this motif, especially in the numerous songs, points to the fact that it has a much more primeval and broader significance. As a monotonous and typically female activity, spinning served successive composers (F. Schubert, R. Wagner, G. Verdi, S. Moniuszko) to create a more profound characteristic of woman-spinners. Reaching out to similar means of musical expression points to the fact that in spite of resorting to various texts, and in spite of the time interval dividing the analyzed works, the woman spinner from the songs has been permanently associated with onomatopoeic imitation of the sound of the spinning wheel and with the meditative nature of the performed activity which becomes a useful background for a more profound female self-reflection.

Terrorist radicalisation has been broadly discussed in different research environments, and there are many different opinions about reasons why some people resort to such extreme acts of terrorism. In January 2015, the Kouachi brothers went into the satire company of Charlie Hebdo in France and killed 12 people, and in November the same year a group of terrorists killed 139 people in different attacks in Paris. There have been many terrorist attacks not only in European countries, but also around the world in general. It is not something new, but globalisation and closeness to the media make us more aware of the terror than earlier. The purpose of the paper is to argue, by using different theories within the terrorism studies, that network theory is not the most suitable way to understand terrorist radicalisation, but that different theories in general supplement each other. At the beginning terminology will be explained, followed by introducing network theory, comparing theories on the basis of different factors like understanding terrorist's background, and look at both internal and external factors that influence individuals. Subsequently, different theories will be compared on how well they explain the root causes for violent actions leading to final conclusions.

The paper examines the evolution of views on convergence in development economics. The author describes the evolution of views on key factors and barriers to the process of bridging the gap in development in economically backward and developing countries. The author looks at convergence trends through the lens of the theory of economic growth and economic policies recommended to catching-up countries. A brief review of economic theories reveals that most theories focus on the factors and determinants of convergence. In the debate on convergence, the focus is increasingly moving away from material factors (physical capital) in favor of those linked with people (human resources) and relationships among microeconomic entities (institutions and social capital). However, this does not mean that material factors are less significant nowadays, Jabłoński says. Consequently, he adds, theoretical convergence scenarios should be built on the basis of material factors of growth and economic development. The way in which the theory of growth is evolving puts off the prospect of convergence between wealthy, developing and economically underdeveloped countries, Jabłoński says. The precursors of the theory of growth described convergence as a process that was in a sense indispensable and autonomous. Meanwhile, proponents of the theory of endogenous growth tend to see it largely as an illusion. In the context of his discussion of economic policies, the author concludes that, in determining the general framework for economic policy, it is necessary to avoid a universal approach based on Eurocentric and Atlantic modernization theories. The experience of developing countries from the 1980s shows that policies recommended to economically underdeveloped and developing countries should be adapted to these countries’ specific conditions, the author concludes.

The study explores trainee teachers’ opinions on selected aspects of the languageteaching profession. Reflecting on the reasons for becoming a teacher, on a language teacher’s professional qualities, and on the positive and negative aspects of the profession appears to be necessary at the starting point of professional training. A qualitative method was employed to collect the data. The students were asked to answer four survey questions pertaining to the issues mentioned above. Thirty-five undergraduate students completed the survey. Their answers were then analysed, which resulted in suggesting some procedures that could be implemented in the training programme. The findings revealed generally positive attitudes to the language teaching profession. However, some actions should be also taken to eliminate a few subjective theories that could negatively influence the students’ approach, such as the feeling of having power over learners, or controversial ways of dealing with discipline problems in the classroom. In Latvia there are no substantial studies on bilingual preschool children’s Latvian language as the second language. The article provides an overview of the 20th–21st century linguistic theories in the context of child second language acquisition as well as raises awareness about their infl uence on and use in the learning of preschoolers whose second language is Latvian, carrying out content analysis of the Minority Preschool Education Program(with instruction in Russian), the Latvian Language Program of X preschool education establishment, teaching resources (teaching aid kits, didactic handouts) as well as the Latvian language as the second language study content.The conclusion is drawn that the theory of communicative competence and the systemic functional grammar theory prevail as well as the basic principles of the behavioral theory can be discerned. In the teaching resources and learning process it is advisable to more often incorporate the same language material repetition in different situations and new combinations. Consideration must be given to more positive and negative transfer (interference) emphasis. To prevent children’s errors it is advisable to provide and incorporate special exercises in the teaching resources as well as methodological recommendations for the Latvian language teachers.

The article aims to present the meaning of the share repurchase (also called as buy backor buy-back) programmes and to identify the reasons announced and potential results of sharerepurchase made by firms listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange (WSE) in Poland. The mainhypothesis to be verified states that there are more reasons to repurchase shares than just cashtransfer to shareholders and there are different results than just diminishing cash holding.The problem is significant enough because share repurchase in the literature is deemed asa substitute for dividends and as another way for cash transfer to shareholdersOn carrying out the research for the selected listed companies, I found that shares might berepurchased for many different reasons and not only to signal the excessive amounts of cash heldin the corporation. Viewing by the numbers it is possible to state that transferring cash is the leastimportant reason while repurchasing shares.

The aim of the article is to present the religious context of conspiracy theories in relation to monotheistic and quasi-religious religions (secular ideologies and ufological movements). The conspiracy theories are usually not falsified on the basis of fact explanation, but can be understood from the perspective of cultural studies and religious studies. Their influence is particularly strong in the area of contemporary popular culture, but also in the area of religious doctrines and narratives with conspiracy threads. It is also impossible to fully study this phenomenon without considering the problem of mediatization of religions. This is due to the fact that various conspiracy theories appear parallel to the process of transferring religion into the media space.

Opis:

Cognitive behavior theories are among the youngest paradigms in clinical psychology. They are subjected to constant modifi cations, which raises a lot of misunderstandings and misinterpretations. Some authors argue that this concept is inconsistent and personality traits recede into the background. They claim that cognitive theory is more the psychology of behavior, cognitive processes and structures than the psychology of human being (Sęk, 2005). The history of cognitive ideas development allows us to understand their assumptions, their current place in psychopathology, and the current state of knowledge. The division into the so-called three “waves” of the cognitive behavior theories renders it possible to separate stereotypes about this theory from its proper image. The article describes the current state of the cognitive behavior theories, with account given to the latest generation, which includes: Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) as well as Schema Focused Therapy (SFT).
Teorie poznawczo-behawioralne są jednymi z najmłodszych koncepcji w psychologii klinicznej. Ulegają one ciągłym przemianom, co rodzi wiele nieporozumień i błędnych interpretacji. Niektórzy autorzy uważają, że jest to koncepcja „mało spójna”, a kwestie osobowości schodzą na dalszy plan, „gdyż jest to bardziej psychologia zachowań, procesów i struktur poznawczych niż psychologia człowieka” (Sęk, 2005, s. 106). Historia rozwoju koncepcji poznawczych pozwala zrozumieć jej założenia, aktualne miejsce w psychopatologii oraz obecny stan wiedzy. Podział na tzw. trzy generacje koncepcji poznawczo-behawioralnych pozwala oddzielić stereotypy dotyczące tej koncepcji od jej właściwego obrazu. W artykule opisano aktualny stan teorii poznawczych z uwzględnieniem najnowszej generacji koncepcji poznawczo-behawioralnych, obejmujących: terapię poznawczą opartą na uważności (MBCT), terapię akceptacji i zaangażowania (ACT), jak również terapię schematów (SFT).

The task of those responsible for local security is for example to ensure that in order to build and maintain a climate community based on a kind of homeostasis, they need to create adequate conditions of life for local communities in order to have the ability to independently formulate their vision of development. Specific balance is possible, inter alia, where the community has sufficient resources to meet its needs and has the ability to create and determine compliance with the standards to satisfy the declared needs.

Przedmiotem niniejszego opracowania jest przeanalizowanie ewolucji teorii, podejść i technik stosowanych w zarządzaniu. Jej celem jest zbadanie ewolucji teorii stosowanych w zarządzaniu, przybliżenie ich oraz opisanie współczesnego podejścia do niego. Głównym problemem poznawczym niniejszego artykułu jest analiza ewolucji podejść teoretycznych funkcjonujących w literaturze przedmiotu oraz wskazanie ich wpływu na kształt współczesnej filozofii zarządzania. Stosując metodę opisu i analizy treści wybranych opracowań naukowych, dokonano systematyzacji zagadnień związanych z tematem artykułu i na podstawie przeanalizowanych materiałów zastanych dokonano ich autorskiej analizy. Wykazano, że obserwacja zachodzących w gospodarce przeobrażeń, umiejętność dostrzegania rzeczywistych problemów i procesów organizacyjnych, ich wnikliwa diagnoza i analiza, stanowi zaczątek do rozwijania funkcjonujących teorii naukowych dotyczących zarządzania, jak również ich uaktualniania i redefiniowania.
The subject of this article is to analyse evolution of theories, attitudes and techniques used in management. The aim of this essay is to study evolution of theories used in management, acquaint with the ways of creating it and to describe nowadays approach to managing and organizing. The main issue of this paper is to analyse theoretical attitudes functioning in the subjects literature and to reveal their influence over philosophy of management. The subject-matter extorted by author leave to play the main role of analysing the aim of the article to the review of common literature and publications. The author proved, that observation of transformations in market economy and their careful diagnosis along with conducted analysis concludes with development of theories around management, together with their updating and redefinig. The main conclusion of this article is that no other science has that high level of dependence between theory and practice as management. That relationship results with immediate innovation and testing of any new theories and putting them in practice.

In this paper, the first investigation on free vibration analysis of three-layered nanobeams with the shear effect incorporated in the mid-layer based on the nonlocal theory and both Euler Bernoulli and Timoshenko beams theories is presented. Hamilton’s formulation is applied to derive governing equations and edge conditions. In order to solve differential equations of motions and to determine natural frequencies of the proposed three-layered nanobeams with different boundary conditions, the generalized differential quadrature (GDQM) is used. The effect of the nanoscale parameter on the natural frequencies and deflection modes shapes of the three layered-nanobeams is discussed. It appears that the nonlocal effect is important for the natural frequencies of the nanobeams. The results can be pertinent to the design and application of MEMS and NEMS.

The subject of the article covers the determinants of the capital structure. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between the capital structure and the liquidity, profitability, age and size of Polish industrial companies. The literature review allowed for the formulation of hypotheses that Polish enterprises shape the capital structure in accordance with the theory of the hierarchy of financing sources. According to this hypothesis, five detailed hypotheses were selected. In order to verify the hypotheses, statistical methods such as basic descriptive statistics and the Pearson correlation coefficient were used. The sample consists of 100 companies listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. The study covers the years 2010–2019. The research results confirm the negative relationship between liquidity and debt. Companies that have difficulties with meeting their current liabilities to a greater extent use borrowed capital financing. There is also a negative correlation between profitability and debt. This means that enterprises that use foreign capital to a greater extent are less profitable. The hypothesis that larger companies have higher levels of debt is also confirmed. In addition, it has been noted that older companies are more likely to use long-term debt. On the basis of the obtained results, it can be concluded that the capital structure of Polish industrial enterprises is consistent with the theory of the hierarchy of financing sources. The research complements the existing research on the issues of shaping the capital structure. It provides results based on current data, which makes it possible to use them in practice. The obtained results may facilitate the decision-making process in the scope of capital structure for enterprises.
Tematyka artykułu obejmuje determinanty struktury kapitału. Celem niniejszego opracowania jest zbadanie zależności pomiędzy strukturą kapitału a płynnością, rentownością, wiekiem oraz rozmiarem polskich firm przemysłowych. Dokonany przegląd literatury pozwolił na postawienie hipotez wskazujących, że polskie przedsiębiorstwa kształtują strukturę kapitału zgodnie z teorią hierarchii źródeł finansowania. Zgodnie z tą hipotezą wyłoniono pięć hipotez szczegółowych. W celu ich weryfikacji zastosowano metody statystyczne takie jak podstawowe statystyki opisowe oraz współczynnik korelacji r Pearsona. Próbę stanowi 100 spółek notowanych na Giełdzie Papierów Wartościowych w Warszawie. Badania obejmują lata 2010–2019. Wyniki badań potwierdzają ujemny związek płynności z zadłużeniem. Firmy mające trudności z regulowaniem zobowiązań bieżących w większej mierze korzystają z finansowania kapitałem obcym. Zauważa się również ujemną korelację pomiędzy rentownością a zadłużeniem. Oznacza to, że przedsiębiorstwa korzystające w większym stopniu z kapitałów obcych są mniej zyskowne. Potwierdza się także hipoteza, że większe spółki mają większy poziom zadłużenia. Ponadto zauważa się, że starsze firmy chętniej korzystają z zadłużenia długoterminowego. Na podstawie uzyskanych wyników można wnioskować, że struktura kapitału polskich przedsiębiorstw przemysłowych jest zgodna z teorią hierarchii źródeł finansowania. Badanie stanowi uzupełnienie istniejących badań o problematyce kształtowania struktury kapitału. Dostarcza wyników na podstawie bieżących danych, przez co umożliwia ich wykorzystanie w praktyce. Otrzymane wyniki mogą ułatwić przedsiębiorstwom proces podejmowania decyzji w zakresie struktury kapitału.

The study tackles the issue of applying respective theories of European integration to explain the processes occurring in the EU, and in particular, in the debt-wrecked eurozone. In the author’s view, the eurozone crisis revived the dispute over the shape of EU. On one hand, it is the supranational neofunctionalism and on the other, state-centric intergovernmentalism views clashing with one another. The author believes that the key theory that successfully explains the member states’ behavior in face of eurozone crisis is the intergovernmentalism theory. It assumes the primacy of nation-state and its interests in the process of European integration. This is particularly apparent in the time of crisis when supranational mechanisms typical of neofunctionalist theory serve solely the purpose of legitimizing national interests of the economically strongest EU members.

In this paper, an account of theoretical integration in cognitive (neuro)science from the mechanistic perspective is defended. It is argued that mechanistic patterns of integration can be better understood in terms of constraints on representations of mechanisms, not just on the space of possible mechanisms, as previous accounts of integration had it. This way, integration can be analyzed in more detail with the help of constraint- satisfaction account of coherence between scientific represen-tations. In particular, the account has resources to talk of idealizations and research heuristics employed by researchers to combine separate results and theoretical frameworks. The account is subsequently applied to an example of successful integration in the research on hippocampus and memory, and to a failure of integration in the research on mirror neurons as purportedly explanatory of sexual orientation.

The Enlightenment and its values, such as naturalism, rationalism, humanistic and cognitive optimism, faith in progress, criticism, empiricism, sensualism and utilitarianism, are coming under increasing fire from social and political movements. One strand of this attack is anti-science protest movements, for example against vaccination and fifth-generation telephony. This text is an attempt to consider whether anti-5G activity can be considered a politically radicalized movement, and if so, whether it is focused solely on one issue or part of a larger wave. The article shows the roots and content of conspiracy theories related to the fight against 5G, as well as the structure, goals, and activities of the Polish part of this movement.

This article focuses on the phenomenon of Islamic radicalization in present-day France. The first part of the paper discusses the notion of radicalization in larger context. For this purpose, the existing theories on radicalization were presented, emphasizing that the phenomenon does not concern only radical Islam. Furthermore, the question of religion and the role of the Salafist movement were described. The second part of the article focuses on the new characteristics of the phenomenon in contemporary France. Firstly, the conflict between the adherents of the theory of radicalization of Islam and Islamization of radicalism was outlined. Secondly, the diachronic dimension of the phenomenon was sketched by presenting the thesis of three generations of French jihadists. Last but not least, the paper describes the phenomenon of female radicalization.

Problem filozoficznych podstaw nauki o biogenezie był w ostatnich latach przedmiotem ożywionych dyskusji na łamach czasopism z zakresu biologii teoretycznej. Jak się okazało, głoszony przez akademickich filozofów (orientacji pozytywistycznej) pogląd, wedle którego „dojrzała” nauka może i powinna być wolna od filozoficznych uwarunkowań, znajduje wciąż zwolenników wśród samych badaczy. Konsekwencją przyjęcia takiego poglądu jest brak możliwości adekwatnego przedstawienia dokonań tej dziedziny badań w wymiarze teoretycznym (nie zaś wyłącznie empirycznym).
The problem of philosophical foundations of the theories of prebiological evolution and life’s origin has been vividly discussed in the recent years. As it outcomes, the opinion according which a “mature” branch of science can and should be “philosophy- free” (expressed by academic philosophers of neopositivistic orientation) is, unfortunately, shared sometimes also by scientists themselves. In the present article it is argued that the lack of philosophical consciousness by some origin-of-life researchers may deeply cause an erroneous presentation of this branch of science.

Opis:

Linguistic description and language modelling need to be formalny sound and complete while still being supported by data. We present a linguistic framework that bridges such formal and descriptive requirements, based on the representation of syntactic information by means of local properties. This approach, called Property Grammars, provides a formal basis for the description of specific characteristics as well as entire constructions. In contrast with other formalisms, all information is represented at the same level (no property playing a more important role than another) and independently (any property being evaluable separately). As a consequence, a syntactic description, instead of a complete hierarchical structure (typically a tree), is a set of multiple relations between words. This characteristic is crucial when describing unrestricted data, including spoken language. We show in this paper how local properties can implement any kind of syntactic information and constitute a formal framework for the representation of constructions (seen as a set of interacting properties). The Property Grammars approach thus offers the possibility to integrate the description of local phenomena into a general formal framework.

The COVID-19 pandemic opened the doors for a corresponding “infodemic”, associated with various misleading narratives related to the SARS-CoV-2 virus. As the way to stop the pandemic was unveiled, misleading narratives switched from the disease itself to the vaccine. Nevertheless, a rather scarce corpus of literature has approached the effects of these narratives on the willingness to take a vaccine against COVID-19. This study investigates how exposure to conspiracy narratives versus information that counter these narratives influences people’s willingness to get vaccinated. Based on an experimental design, using a sample of Romanian students (N=301), this research shows that exposure to factual information related to COVID-19 vaccines meant to debunk conspiracy theories leads to higher willingness to vaccinate. Furthermore, this study shows that young, educated Romanians consider distant others to be more influenced by conspiracy theories on this topic, and, therefore, more prone to exhibit hesitancy towards COVID-19 vaccination.

Opis:

The aim of the present work is to analyze free flexural vibration and buckling of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) under compressive axial loading based on different constitutive equations and beam theories. The models contain a material length scale parameter that can capture the size effect, unlike the classical Euler-Bernoulli or Reddy beam theory. The equations of motion of the Reddy and the Huu-Tai beam theories are reformulated using different gradient elasticity theories, including stress, strain and combined strain/inertia. The equations of motion are derived from Hamilton’s principle in terms of the generalized displacements. Analytical solutions of free vibration and buckling are presented to bring out the effect of the nonlocal behavior on natural frequencies and buckling loads. The presented theoretical analysis is illustrated by a numerical example, and the results are qualitatively compared by another results.

It is formulated and understood in many ways and has been thoroughly criticised. In the paper, I focus on moral grounds for justification of the principle as well as on precaution and risk in ethics.

The article discusses the issue of the development of professional interests of young people with mental retardation. A review of selected theories help to understand better the dynamics and the regularity of this development, which allows an individual approach to each intellectually disabled person who takes professional life. Analysis of the determinants of professional development can be helpful not only in vocational guidance, but should also be interested to employers who employ people with mental disabilities. It turns out that the most appropriate to this group of people is emphasized by the parameter satisfaction instrumental theory and the theory of adaptation to work. The needs theories explain the motivational aspect of the profession, and pay attention to the inalienable right of deciding about himself as a person with a disability.

W artykule podjęto próbę usystematyzowania poglądów na temat globalizacji dzięki wprowadzeniu kilku kryteriów porządkujących. Omówiono zatem poziomy globalizacji, takie jak: makroekonomiczny, mezoekonomiczny, mikroekonomiczny oraz gospodarstw domowych. Na tych różnych poziomach na temat globalizacji wypowiadali się przedstawiciele dyscyplin ekonomicznych: makroekonomii, finansów oraz teorii zarządzania, prezentując różne, niekiedy przeciwne, poglądy. Wśród nich opisano poglądy pozytywne, negatywne i umiarkowane na temat związane z globalizacją. Analizowano również wpływ globalizacji na kształtowanie się poglądów o strategii przedsiębiorstw.
The paper attempts to systematise the diverse views on globalisation by introducing several classificatory criteria. The author discusses the levels of globalisation, e.g., macroeconomic, sectoral, microeconomic, and household levels. Presented are views expressed by macroeconomists, finance specialists, and management theorists. They represent different, sometimes contradictory, attitudes to globalisation and its effects: positive, negative or neutral. One of the chapters provides an analysis of the impact of globalisation on strategy theories.

As “the primary human motive” (MacIntyre, 2002a, p. 61), emotion operates as an amplifier, which provides energetic intensity to all human behavior, including language learning. This chapter explains major theories of emotion drawn from positive psychology, social psychology, social constructivism, social constructionism, and existential psychotherapy. It also offers implications for language learning related to understanding and managing emotions; expressing emotions appropriately despite cultural and linguistic differences; viewing emotions as transitory social roles; enhancing positive emotions and developing resilience; and recognizing, perhaps paradoxically, both the negative and the positive aspects of anxiety. The chapter concludes with the statement that language learners can become more agentic in dealing with their emotions. This form of self-regulation can lead to greater success in language learning.

Numerous controversies, such as the application of queer theory versus gay and lesbian studies approach, have been discussed taking into consideration their methodological usefulness with regard to the historical Old Polish texts. Preference has been given to traditional gay and lesbian studies, not queer criticism, as the later may lead to numerous misunderstandings and misinterpretations owing to the indefinite, secondary, doubtful and oppressive character of most available original texts in question, which has been fully exemplified.

The paper contains a new classification of risk situations, which enables the unified treatment of all kinds of problems concerning risk and uncertainty. One of the implications which one can draw from this classification is that there is no sense to formu-late general risk theories. In majority of situation the so called risk management is based on common sense supported by past experiences and some analytical tools. However, there are situations of a particular practical significance which for nearly one hundreds of years have been intensively investigated. As a result of these endeavors a number of models have been developed, particularly models known as expected utility models, and non-expected utility models. One of the main goals of this paper is to highlight the mean-ing of the basic notations used in these models: utility and subjective expected utility.

In light of Freire Today, this paper aims to present the results from a case study in Vietnam about the teachers’ perception of education with the recognized signals of being oppressed and the oppressors in their teaching. This study was conducted to clarify the problems preventing education to be developed in this context with the participants from 3 provinces in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam. The qualitative data was collected through using a mixture of 7 interviews and 10 opened-question surveys due to the geographical difficulties. The data collection was framed by using the Padilla’s (1994) techniques of unfolding matrix for data analysis. The findings show that the authoritarian education remains unchanged or slowly transformed with the signals of the teachers as both the oppressors to their learners and the oppressed in their working system. The findings would be meaningful during the ways to figure out the real challenges of current Vietnamese educational system in which critical theories could be considered as one of the possible solutions.

In the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church the primate is a jurisdictional rank between the pope and one or more metropolitan archbishops. It would be rather difficult to define the exact role or enumerate the powers of the primates in general as their prerogatives differ widely in different eras, and besides canon law, they are heavily influenced by papal or royal privileges and regional customs. A future summary of the medieval history of the primates would, therefore, require the independent analysis of every single national primacy that has ever existed in western Christianity during this period. The present study analyses the process how the archbishops of Esztergom consolidated their dominant position in the ecclesiastical hierarchy of the medieval Kingdom of Hungary. Although the dignity of the Primate of Hungary was only conferred to the archbishops at the end of the fourteenth century, several sources indicate that many of their powers existed centuries before the official papal appointment to primate. After a short review of the institution’s history in the Early and High Middle Ages, based on the jurisdictional conflicts between the two Hungarian archbishops, I present the powers and privileges that belonged to the prelate of Esztergom. Finally, based on the results of previous studies and the critical analysis of primary sources-among them a document that has never been discussed before in Hungarian historiography-I reconstruct the early stages of the evolution of the primatial role of the Archbishop of Esztergom.

Educational practice is directly connected with how and what teachers think about the students. In the text are presented the results of researches into common beliefs of students from teaching faculties concerning values in the children’s world. Analyses show worrying tendencies in the way of thinking of future teachers about the students: they perceive them as being passive, very dependent on adults, concentrated on themselves, potentially more prone to harm rather than to good. In the understanding of students, children learn bad values from pathological adults, peers, and the media.

Several authors have researched workplace circumstances and employee performance in organisations. Personal observations, documented observations, and discoveries in the literature all provided an incentive for this investigation. Some systematic observations revealed that academic staff in Nigerian universities are subjected to some unfavourable workplace conditions, even though they are expected to perform well in teaching, publish quality research papers that can contribute to global knowledge and development, and engage in community development services. Major theories have attempted to explain employee productivity in the workplace. Using secondary data, this article explores the Two Factor model by Fredrick Herzberg, the Contingency theory of leadership and the Expectancy theory by Victor Vroom. They were most relevant in associating motivating factors with the work performance of employees in the organisation. The criticisms of each theory have paved the way for theoretical triangulation and, thus, a synthesis of all three theories to explain the work performance of academic staff members in Nigerian universities. The article resolved that incentives are indeed essential in order to increase the performance of academic staff in Nigerian universities.

It is shown that the conception has significant philosophical dimensions, and that its important aspects are in close correspondence to relevant aspects of the rationalistic philosophical theories of science.

In the following article an attempt has been made to review important research and theories concerning the consumer behavior from the 19 th century until the present days. A number of particular theoretical concepts have frequently been characterized by various assumptions regarding the nature of the consumer, the specifications of their decisions as well as the range of their behavior factors. Special attention has been paid to microeconomic theories and concepts influenced by psychology. General speaking, on the basis of the analysis one could come to the conclusion that the consumer behaviors cannot be forseen and explained only by investigating the laws of economy without considering any of the psychological variables such as attitudes, motives or perception. The sources are mainly the data from extensive and interesting bibliography on the subject.

The aim of the article is to point out differences between theories of the IR (International Relations) in the process of explanation of the institutionalization of international relations. Selected theories of the International Relations were chosen that belong to the rationalist and constructivist paradigm in the International Relations studies. Since the 80s, institutionalization has been a matter of reflection of researchers. This follows from the dynamics and specificity of the contemporary international relations – quantitative growth of various forms of international institutions (international organizations, regimes, norms, or transnational actors). They start to play an increasingly important role. It is assumed that such institutions have an impact on the behavior of states in the international system. This raises the question of how to study that influence. The answer to that question is different depending on the theoretical perspective used for analyses.

The purpose of this article is discourse analysis of masculinity created in reports assessing the current condition of Polish startups. The analysis covered reports published by the Startup Poland foundation from 2015-2019. This text is an attempt to apply the heuristic framework of integrative gender theories to interpret the results of the research, and explain how the discursively masculinity was constructed. Startups as innovative professional structures belonging to the knowledge-based economy model are an example of organizations typical of the information society. Numerous studies report changes (crises) occurring among the practiced male patterns (especially those typical for the countries of the global North). The results of the analysis show that despite these reports, the largest startup organizations striving to produce innovative solutions and using modern solutions, on the discursive surface, are associated with cultural patterns of hegemonic masculinity. Polish startups, on a structural and symbolic dimensions, are a highly masculine spaces. However, due to the practice of achieving hegemony, they (startups) can be interpreted in terms of cooperative or hybrid masculinity.

In this paper, the uniform-approximation technique in combination with the pseudoreduction technique is applied in order to derive consistent theories for isotropic and anisotropic plates. The approach is used to assess and validate the plate theories already established in the literature. Further lines of research are indicated.
W pracy omówiono metodę jednorodnej aproksymacji połączonej z techniką pseudo-redukcji zastosowaną do sformułowania spójnych teorii płyt izotropowych i anizotropowych. Zaprezentowaną metodologię wykorzystano do oceny i weryfikacji teorii już istniejących i dobrze znanych z literatury. Wskazano także dalsze kierunki badań.

The main purpose of this article is to show some processes of the growth of knowledge. An astrophysical case: a problem of planets around pulsars formation is studied. In the first part reasons for taking this problem are presented. Then some historical facts about discoveries of planets around pulsars are mentioned. The paper focuses on three cases: PSR1257+12, PSR1620-26 and PSR J 1719-1438. In second part of the article the changes in the theoretical point of view, which occured during the last twenty years, are presented. At the end the attempt is made to describe the process of the growth of the planets around pulsars within the framework of formation.

The issue of broadly-understood ties and collaboration between business and science is one of the key issues constituting the foundations for the modern knowledge-based economy, which relies on innovations and competitiveness in technically and scientifically advanced branches. The article outlines the theoretical perspective for studies on the effects of this cooperation. Taking into consideration the richness of the aspects and sub-issues of the problem which should be analysed, the paper implicitly prepares the “groundwork” for more detailed empirical studies based on the overview of different approaches and methods used in the literature, concluding - not only from the literature but mainly from the special characteristics of the “start-up world” - that the most suitable theoretical approach for properly constructed empirical studies is the network theory in general and the social capital perspective in particular. The subject of “hard” forms of cooperation between science institutions and business (start-ups in particular) requires more insight into the network approach to entrepreneurship. Secondly, the article presents an overview of the literature, concentrating on studies which analyse cooperation between knowledge-based entities (universities) and business in practice, as well as a detailed example of one such case study. The case study which was discovered in the literature, namely cooperation between Ericsson and ITU, is related to network concepts discussed in the theoretical part.

In integrated approaches to personality (McAdams & Pals, 2006; McCrae & Costa, 1999), it is possible to examine relationships between personality traits, beliefs as characteristic adaptations, and subjective well-being. This research aimed to verify if implicit self-theories (belief about stability of human nature) proposed by Dweck (2000) and life-engagement proposed by Scheier et al. (2006) play a mediating role in relationships between personality traits and satisfaction with life. The relationships were examined with respect to infertility problem. A sample of 120 adults (aged 26–48; M = 36.60; SD = 4.82; 50% women) participated in the research. The mediation hypotheses were examined, and furthermore, four groups of couples were compared in terms of measured variables. The groups were: couples with (1) cured and (2) uncured infertility and couples who were not infertile and (3) have and (4) do not have children. Life-engagement mediated the relationship between Conscientiousness and satisfaction with life in the whole sample. The belief about stability of human nature mediated relationships between subjective well-being and Conscientiousness, Agreeableness, Neuroticism, and Extraversion only among couples with an infertility problem.

Primordialism as object of critique and source of inspiration for sociological studies of nationThe article presents the main assumptions of primordialist paradigm in sociological studies of nation. It has been assumed that most of surveys conducted in the primordial perspective refers to texts written by Edward Shils and Clifford Geertz. Consequently, the theories of these two scholars are presented. Then the critique of primordialist paradigm is reported. Because of inadequacy of some critical assertions, the heuristic values of some primordialist theses will be characterized, namely a phenomenon defined as a primordial consciousness of nation. Prymordializm jako przedmiot krytyki i źródło inspiracji socjologicznych studiów nad narodemW artykule zaprezentowane zostały główne założenia prymordializmu w socjologicznych studiach nad narodem. Przyjęto, iż znaczna część studiów nad narodem realizowana w perspektywie prymordialistycznej odwołuje się do tez i twierdzeń wyłożonych przez Edwarda Shilsa i Clifforda Geertza. W związku z tym przedstawiono teorię narodów ich autorstwa. Następnie zrelacjonowana została krytyka dotycząca prymordializmu.Z uwagi na to, iż część krytyki w opinii autora artykułu jest nieuzasadniona, przedstawiona została odpowiedź na nią przez ukazanie wartościowych heurystycznie tez prymordializmu, nazwanych w tekście świadomościową prymordializacją narodu.
