Opis:
The article is an introduction to the issue of Polish literature written in Germany after 1989. The first part of the work focuses around the current literary discussions on defining and developing the terminology and methods enabling research into this new literature – written abroad after the fall of the Iron Curtain. Post-emigration literature, migration literature, minority literature, multi-, inter-, trans-cultural and diasporic literature – these are only a few of the suggested terms. The second part of the article refers to the works of selected representatives of Polish literature written after 1989 and the issues they discuss in their works. The purpose of the article is to briefly present the complexity of an important problem in the views of Polish, German and Slavic philologists. At the same time, it aims to show that study of the phenomenon in question is still insufficient.

The article attempts to grasp the essence of transcultural theory, locate its roots and situate it within the framework of previous cultural research. This enables the influence of this theory on the projected future significance of humanistic research. The author makes use of the theoretical approaches of Arianna Dagnino and Mikhail Epstein. Although looking at this theory fromdifferent angles, in both cases the transcultural perspective translates into a unique perception of humanities (“transcultural” or “transformative” humanities), as a field of key importance for the future of science.

This paper addresses the issue of language and belonging in the transnational context of migration. It draws on two research projects with first-generation children of Polish labour migrants in Scotland. The paper examines the role that language plays in fostering multiple ways of being and belonging, and in understanding how children make sense of their identity. It suggests that language should take a more central place in debates about cultural connectivity and transnational migration. Findings point to the need for a more holistic approach to supporting migrant children, including the explicit recognition of family cultural and language capital in the host society.

Opis:
To understand transcultural education in societies with children from many cultural backgrounds, this essay looks at socialization in colonial-hierarchical settings and uses the analysis of cultural impositions to discuss consequences and needs in present-day immigration societies. The analysis begins with an historical approach to intercultural education. In a first section, focusing on British as well as French and Dutch colonies it analyses memories as reflected in life-writings of colonized resident children in schools run by in-migrant – “third-culture” – imperial administrators and teachers – a remote-control education. Present-day constructs of mono-cultural national values may be equally remote to the life-worlds of many-cultured societies. The second part traces the migration of imperially-educated students and working adults to the (former) colonizer core with India-to-England (late 19th to early 20th century) and Suriname-to-The Netherlands (1960s-2000s) as examples. In a third section, as an exemplary case for today’s multicultural cities, I discuss French-speaking university students from North and West Africa in Paris, i.e. migrant students facing a national/nation-centred/nationalist educational system. In a concluding part, I will interpret present-day Canada’s educational practices in terms of transcultural socialization. How did children and adolescents connect the "facts" learned in educational institutions to their everyday lives -- if they did so at all?

Opis:
Drawing on recent scholarship on transcultural memory and its role in peacebuilding, this paper explores the implications of entangling memories that belong to different pasts, places, and cultural groups in Joseph O’Connor’s Redemption Falls (2007) and Colum McCann’s TransAtlantic (2013). Both novels, written by authors interested in the notions of oppression and suppression of stories, are polyphonic texts that disrupt any single linear narrative by interweaving multiple storylines through constant movements across time and space. McCann’s focus shifts from the aftermath of WWI to the 1998 Belfast Agreement, while O’Connor’s novel deals with the American Civil War and Irish nationalism; both recount episodes of the Great Famine, the ensuing emigration, and the history of Abolitionism. Hence, painful memories of the Irish mingle with the mnemonic repertoires of those who suffered the abominations of slavery or internecine conflict in an attempt to give voice to the marginalised and highlight bonds between (apparently unrelated) groups of people. Moreover, this convergence of inherited memories binds the past with the present and the future, as the recollections have echoes of contemporary conflicts and global phenomena involving Ireland, whose role in them is implicitly interrogated. By fusing significant cultural memories across generations and spaces, these novels assert the ‘historical duty’ to remember to promote negotiation and mutual understanding between different cultural groups today. This paper, therefore, will first offer an overview of contemporary Irish fiction, characterised by an original world-facing, rather than nation-focused, outlook. Second, it will undertake the analysis of the selected novels to contribute to the ongoing discussion about the potential of literature to build sound knowledge of diverse human experiences and, as a consequence, promote peace.

Albertus Bobovius/Ali Ufkî Bey was a typical go-between of his time, a learned translator and convert who benefited from his double religious sensitivity. As a consequence, he was able to create a transcultural translation of the Bible in the 17th century. This paper brings context to these aspects of his life. Ali Ufkî Bey created his works on religion during a time of intensive confessionalization, when Istanbul was a hub for many political interests with various religious and cultural options intersecting in the Ottoman capital. The project of translating the Bible to the national languages of Islam was carried out according to the vision of an alliance between Islam and reformed Christian groups, supporting the thesis of Calvino-Turkism, promoted by John Amos Comenius. As oriental scholars were lacking sufficient command of Turkish, they had to commission highly qualified go-betweens. There were two competing plans: Dutch Calvinist and Anglican. Bobovius was a part of the Dutch plan, along with Yahya Bin Ishak, a Jewish dragoman. The strategies of translation chosen by Bobovius were very modern according to the present knowledge of the art of translation, but in his era, there were difficulties in choosing the right language register and the right religious imagery to find proper equivalents. Underestimated by his contemporaries, Bobovius was rehabilitated by today’s linguists, and his “Turkish Bible” is still in use today. The text does not contest the religious identity of the author of this translation of the Bible but presents the hybridity of this figure against the background of the wider historical and confessional context of 17th-century Istanbul. It also provides examples of Bobovius’s translation choices and an initial interpretation of his methodology of timeless transcultural translation, from the perspective of contemporary translation theories. In the light of contemporary transcultural studies, present-day scholarship may treat Ali Ufkî as a transcultural agent and a gifted go-between.

Introduction. The aim of the article is diagnosing components of intercultural competences in students of nursing in graduate studies. Material and methods. Method – a diagnostic survey. The sampling involved 100% of graduate students of 1st and 2nd year, The Nursing Collegium Mazovia Innovative University, Siedlce Results. Students define culture as values, beliefs, norms guiding human thinking and activity. More than half indicate that the image of different culture is taken from ones’ learning process and own experience. Lack of knowledge is a factor that hinders relationships between a nurse and the sick person. Care has been defined as understanding and support, whereas empathy as understanding through the prism of culture and values. Few people use the model of transcultural nursing. Contact with a person from a different cultural background provides them with openness and understanding. The results were compared with the findings of the research conducted by Cucumber-Rainbow, Kaminska, Matusiak, Skupnik, 2011; Zdziebło et al., 2014a, 2014b; Majda, Zalewska-Puchała, 2011. Conclusions. The study confirmed the hypothesis about intercultural competencies in students of nursing, but cultural knowledge, recognition of cultural differences, knowledge of language are only some competences that can provide transcultural care.

Opis:
In this essay I connect the decisions and experiences of individual migrants, starting with Wladyslaw Chuchla, and place them in larger, even global frames of decision-making and the options societies of departure and of arrival provide as well as constraints they impose. This involves relating Chuchla’s – and, in a comparative perspective, other migrants’ – place of birth in its evolvement over time in the macro-region and its history. It also involves a discussion of the routes to exit from both the local course of history and the geography. Thus, I discuss the Atlantic Migration System and the Polish lands in an integrated perspective: were conditions in the Polish lands singular or may they be compared to patterns in other parts of the world? I will look at the agency of migrants leaving other parts of the world but sharing with Chuchla the destination North America. This discussion will raise methodological and theoretical issues. Local communities are the spaces in which men and women make their decisions. They are transculturally rather than transnationally connected but the frames in which decisions are made characterize larger regions. I argue that migrating men and women made their decisions to depart and about where to arrive in the frame of inter-state power relations, impositions by the elites (and, sometimes, neighbors) of self-elevated national cultures, and in local everyday-cultures, norms, beliefs framed by regional economies and the human capital that could be developed in them. Emigration was a counter project to “nation” building. Polish migrants could chose destinations in a near-global diaspora, provided information and travel connections existed to their place of departure. Diaspora, too, is localized and in many different ways transcultural.

In this article, I analyze the poems of Buryat author Namzhil Nimbuev from a transcultural perspective, focusing on the influence of Japanese verse on Nimbuevʼs poetry. Although such influence has already been noticed by Buryat literary critics (Dampilova, Hamgushkeeva, Chan), so far there has been no transcultural analysis of Nimbuevʼs poems. What I claim is that the adaptation of Japanese literary motifs by Nimbuev was a mode of expression of his Buryat identity and a possibility to transcend the limitations of dominating Russian literary tradition. In a broader sense, the example of Nimbuev shows that there is a variety of transcultural writers: he himself was a poet who used Russian as a transcultural language, adopted Japanese motifs, although never visited Japan, and whose poetry expressed longing for his Buryat ethnic roots. I argue that Nimbuev is a special case of a transcultural writer who crosses the borders between cultures in order to explore his own ethnic identity. My analysis of Namzhil Nimbuevʼs poetry is preceded by definitions of the key notions, namely transculture and transcultural literature, which are followed by a brief survey of Buryat national literature. Seeking to understand the reasons of Nimbuevʼs identity searching and his predilection for Japanese culture, I present his biography. Finally, I analyze his poems focusing on Japanese elements such as suggestion, irregularity, perishability and ʻdouble moodʼ, in order to prove transcultural character of Nimbuevʼs poetry.

The second part provides some information with regard to the statement of CISV’s educational purpose and outlines the programmes offered by the organization. The third part focuses on experiental education model (the opportunity to learn from direct experience) and multi-dimensions of intercultural competence considered in critical discourses of, for example, K.Lewin, D.A. The aim of the considerations in this paper is to stress that „learning with a difference,” building awareness involving reflection and friendship make the educational experience permanent. We, as teachers, should learn from those who succeed in making educational practice adventurous as well as exciting and over 60 years of CISV’s work is a good model for us to follow.

The Desire of Nowhere – Nadine Gordimer’s Burger’s Daughter in a Transcultural PerspectiveThe article marks an attempt to read the book Burger’s Daughter by Nadine Gordimer from the transcultural perspective. Gordimer is one of the most famous South African novelists and an active anti-apartheid activist, hence her novels already have a plethora of analysis. However, the use of transcultural perspective would introduce into the existing critical outlook the more general issue of the struggle for freedom from any cultural and societal ties imposed on the individual. Although the local political situation is an important background for Gordimer’s book, the article situates its key issue in a possibility of creating a space of individual freedom, i.e. space situated beyond the cultural and societal entanglements that seem to resemble the transcultural endeavor.Conceptualization and expression of a space of ultimate liberation is a difficult venture, as the main tool of a literary text – language – is culturally bounded. However, transcultural literature, phenomenon just entering into the sight of literary research, displays the creative strategies of undermining the language in literary creation, i.a. the pluralization of narrative voices, the introduction of the unreliable narrator, extensive use of irony, multinational settings of the storyline. This article is an attempt to detect some other literary strategies of creating space beyond words and beyond culture. The analysis underlines how the use of visual strategies help to decenter the narrative voice and to actuate the text into the transcultural movement. It also exposes the importance of first-person narration in the performative process of distancing to oneself – appearing to herself as “a place where things happen”. Finally, the article detects the crucial gestures – moments of increased tension, both visual and deeply personal, that lead beyond the text to the experiences of “life itself”, i.e. blood, agony, and death. Pragnienie nigdzie – Córka Burgera Nadine Gordimer w perspektywie transkulturowejArtykuł zestawia książkę Nadine Gordimer Córka Burgera z „pragnieniem nigdzie” („the desire of nowhere”), odczytanym przez autorkę w perspektywie transkulturowej. Gordimer to jedna z najbardziej rozpoznawanych południowoafrykańskich pisarek i aktywistek anty-apartheidu.
