    The aim of the article is to study the range of influence of indigenous vocabulary on sixteenth-century Spanish language which had been spoken by Spanish settlers in the New World and transmitted by them to friends and relatives left in homeland. Private letters of immigrants to Spanish Indies serve as a representative source which reflect their linguistic habits. The vast collection of more than 650 letters of immigrants was edited first in 1989 by Enrique Otte, and later in 2009 by Marta Fernández Alcaide in a much more reliable transcription. This second edition is the base of the research presented in the article.

    In this paper, the author undertakes a critical analysis of the findings relat-ing to the life and reign of Charles V, contained in the monarch’s biography by the English historian Henry Kamen. Particular attention is paid here to those elements of biographical narrative in which Kamen does not go beyond the established interpretive canon (as in the case of the imperial election of 1519 and rivalry with Francis I), those which go against predominant views (e.g. the question of the Reformation or Charles’ relationship with his mother), as well as the most controversial assertions (American policy, for instance). The chief intention of the author, who confronts the findings and the opinions expressed by Kamen with the interpretations of other researchers, is to address and fill some of the gaps in the Polish discourse concerning Charles V, where the es-tablished stereotypes surrounding the emperor continue to the iterated.

    Tanto El caldero de oro (1981) como La orilla oscura (1985) tratan de unas curiosas relaciones especulares entre España e Hispanoamérica −entre españoles e hispanoamericanos−, tema recurrente e importante en la narrativa de José María Merino a partir de su particular descubrimiento de América. En el presente artículo nos proponemos estudiar los diferentes aspectos de esta estrecha relación, analizando la confluencia de las tradiciones de las dos orillas – en lo que se refiere al mestizaje y a los referentes literarios−, así como el motivo del doble vinculado a los problemas de identidad que experimentan los protagonistas. En el planteamiento de Merino observamos tanto algunos rasgos propios de la literatura fantástica como, también, una propuesta innovadora frente a la tradición de este género.
    Merino’s novels El caldero de oro (1981) and La orilla oscura (1985) present the “mirror” relations between Spain and Spanish America, between the Spanish and the Spanish Americans, a recurring and important theme in José María Merino’s narrative since his personal discovery of America. This article aims to study the various aspects of that close relationship, taking into account the convergence of literary traditions as well as the doppelganger motif linked to the crisis of identity that the protagonists suffer. The author argues that Merino’s novels are a perfect blend of typical features of fantasy literature and some new artistic devices.
    W powieści El caldero de oro (1981) i La orilla oscura (1985) przedstawiono szczególne, „lustrzane” relacje między Hiszpanią a Hispanoameryką, między Hiszpanami a Hispanoamerykanami. Od czasu, kiedy Merino doświadczył swojego osobistego odkrycia Ameryki, temat ten zajmuje istotne miejsce w jego twórczości. W artykule dokonano przeglądu różnych aspektów wspomnianych „lustrzanych relacji”, uwzględniając związki krwi, wspólne elementy tradycji literackiej oraz motyw Doppelgänger związany z poczuciem tożsamości. Postawiono tezę, że Merino, wykorzystując środki i motywy typowe dla fantastyki, proponuje zarazem rozwiązania nowatorskie względem tradycji tego gatunku.

    El objetivo del artículo es dar cuenta de unas características de las lenguas amerindias subyacentes a ciertos cambios morfosintácticos y lexicales del español, tales como la manera de jerarquizar y de lexicalizar los conceptos de aspecto y de dinamicidad, las cuales diferencian estos idiomas del castellano. El artículo demuestra que dichas diferencias, resultado de conceptualizaciones del mundo (Lozada Pereira, 2006) y de la temporalidad (Evans, 2007; Wilk-Racięska, 2007) divergentes, revisten particular importancia tanto en las investigaciones de las lenguas amerindias como en estudios de algunos cambios en español debidos a estas lenguas.
    The aim of the article is to draw attention to some of the features of Amerindian languages underlying several morphosyntactic transformations in South American Spanish, which cause it to significantly differ from Spanish. The focus is on the hierarchy and lexicalization of the aspect and the broadly understood concept of dynamicity. The article proves that these differences, resulting from different visions of the world (Lozada, 2006) and different conceptualizations of temporality (Evans, 2007; Wilk-Racięska, 2007b), can be of great significance in research of both American Indians and some of the transformations in Spanish language.

    In Colombia and Central America, the subject of terrorism – or of the acts of terror – is inevitable in all the literature that aspires to reflect the socio-political reality. In the last few years it has been given an exceptional importance. Taking as the basis various examples of the modern Colombian and Central American narrative, the article presents distinct ways in which the novels try to deal with the trauma of the recent history. The analyzed works are Los ejércitos by E. Rosero, Insensatez by H. Castellanos Moya and El material humano by R. Rey Rosa. The analysis focuses on how the tragic experiences of the common people are absorbed by the narrative, turning trauma into literature. We are particularly interested in a meta-literary reflection regarding social commitment of literature, as well as the impossibility of dealing with trauma and the relations between the esthetic and ethical values in literary representations of trauma.

    El objetivo del artículo es estudiar cuestiones de corrección idiomática que aparecen en el primer diccionario de mexicanismos, de autoría de un exiliado cubano. Sostenemos la hipótesis de que el diccionario puede arrojar datos interesantes por estar enfocado desde un prisma diferencial de un autor que fue hablante de otra modalidad latinoamericana del español. Al mismo tiempo, nos informa sobre la evolución del pensamiento lingüístico en la época relacionado con cuestiones de la normatividad. Finalmente, recoge una polémica que mantenía el autor con otro lexicógrafo cubano, lo que hasta cierto puede relativizar el valor de la obra como el primer diccionario de mexicanismos
    The aim of the paper is to focus on topics of correct language usage that is presented in the first dictionary of Mexican Spanish, composed by a Cuban emigrant. The hypothesis is that the dictionary can offer interesting data on contrast between Mexican and Cuban Spanish, as its author was speaker of different regional variety of the language. At the same time, it is interesting to see the evolution of linguistic thinking at the time of its composition related with normativity in usage. Finally, it contains a debate maintained by the author with another Cuban lexicographer, that would actually relativize its status as a first dictionary of Mexican Spanish.
