Opis:
The study examines the innovativeness of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the Wielkopolska region and factors influencing innovation in 2001-2004. The analysis is made against the background of changes in innovativeness and factors determining innovation in 1992-2000. The author used the results of surveys conducted among 163 SMEs in Wielkopolska in 2005. Overall, SME innovativeness did not increase in the analyzed period compared with previous yeas. The innovativeness of enterprises tended to grow with an increase in company size, the level of education of company managers (owners) and the age of the company. Companies using the Internet, especially those using it for sale and purchase transactions, displayed greater innovativeness. Innovation is restrained by scant financial resources, outmoded equipment and machinery, high business risk and the absence of an active pro-innovation policy pursued by the government.

Opis:
As a result of economic transformation, dynamic development of entrepreneurship took place. It effected in over 2 million small and medium-sized enterprises, that currently operate. The SME sector (micro, small and medium companies) comprises the vast majority of companies in Poland, namely 99.8%. The smallest entities are obviously the most numerous ones - 96% are micro-companies (1.84 million). The share of small companies in the structure of Polish companies is 3.0% (56.7 thousand), whereas for medium companies it is 0.8% (15.6 thousand), and for large companies it is only 0.2% (3.4 thousand). Condition and development prospects for small and medium companies and other participants of economic life generally depend on macroeconomic conditions. Therefore, the basic condition for long-term development of the small and medium-sized company sector should be recognized as stable macroeconomic policy held by the state, ensuring long-term economic balance, simultaneously leading to gradual reduction of tax and interest rates.

Opis:
The author endeavors to establish if Poland’s small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are undergoing internationalization in line with the rules described in the theory of gradual internationalization. This theory is generally used to explain the behaviors of companies on foreign markets. The author carries out a quantitative analysis on a sample of more than 100 exporting manufacturing enterprises based in Poland’s Małopolska province. The study shows that the behavior of most surveyed companies accords with the rules followed in other countries and the guidelines of the gradual internationalization theory. In particular, as their experience grows, companies are entering new markets and increasing the share of exports in their total revenue. Morawczyński’s study shows that companies are entering foreign markets at an increasingly faster rate. This conclusion is compatible with the latest findings in other countries. Beginning exporters usually choose countries that are considered to be close “psychologically,” the author says. Unexpectedly, Morawczyński finds a weaker-than-expected link between the level of internationalization and the system of knowledge associated with operations abroad. The surveyed companies break away from the pattern mapped out by the gradual internationalization theory. This is largely due to a global business concept increasingly popular in recent years whereby companies are encouraged to pursue global operations from inception onward.

The article contributes to the overall body of knowledge about investments made by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and their sources of financing. The author conducts an empirical research through a direct interview method on two samples: a sample of 1,001 microbusinesses (meaning those with up to nine employees) and a sample of 1,202 SMEs with 10 to 249 employees. The research shows that only 41 percent of Poland’s SMEs carried out investments in 2004. Investment indicators were the highest among medium-sized enterprises (74 percent), while microbusinesses showed the lowest indicators (41 percent). In the case of individual types of investments (day-to-day maintenance and modernization, purchase of computer hardware and software, purchase of individual machines and equipment, purchase of means of transportation, construction of new plants and purchase of turnkey production lines), the highest investment indicators were invariably recorded among medium-sized enterprises. The percentage of investing companies increased with an increase in employment. The same is true of the percentage of companies declaring investment plans for the next 12 months. Most of the companies polled used their own funds to finance their investments. An important (though usually only supportive) role in financing some investments (in particular, the purchases of means of transportation, turnkey production lines, machines and equipment) was played by loans and leasing. In analyses by market segment, the following rule was observed: companies with a higher level of employment displayed a greater tendency to use loans and leasing programs. Other sources of funds for investment projects in the SME sector were of marginal importance. Comparative analyses reveal that the use of external sources of funds to finance SME investment projects in Poland is usually two to three times lower than in other EU countries and the United States. However, no evidence of discrimination against SMEs in lending by banks was obtained. Only 2.5 percent of the companies polled have been refused bank loans over the past three years. An increased propensity to invest among Polish SMEs could be stimulated by appropriate activities of the government, banks and entrepreneurs themselves.

Opis:
Nowadays competitiveness of enterprises is determined by the size and range of implemented investment projects. The investments need to involve necessary resources. In the case of the SME sector, enterprises have limited financial assets. Therefore, Poland’s accession to the European Union and the opportunity to use its funding is a chance for development of this sector. The aim of the paper is to discuss the significance of EU funds in investments of SMEs and to present the most important advantages and barriers to their spending. The research methods used in this paper are: study of literature and analysis of secondary data. The research material comprises programming documents and the results of research carried out at the request of the European Leasing Fund, the Polish Agency for Enterprise Development and the Polish Confederation Lewiatan. Conclusions: EU funding is an attractive source of financing investments for enterprises. It is one of the most affordable forms of obtaining capital. Acquisition of additional financial means can determine the start of an investment, extend its scope, increase its rate and improve its quality. However, in practice the share of EU funds in financing SMEs investments is still small and entrepreneurs face many barriers to using this form of support. Major obstacles include: excessive bureaucracy, strict procedures, over-scrupulous office workers, lengthy verification of payment applications, as well as delays in payments to beneficiaries.

This paper focuses on the role of small and medium-sized ports (SMPs) in enhancing the competitiveness and logistics performance of multi-port gateway regions and associated inland logistics systems. The concepts developed will be applied to the ports in the northeast of China, a multi-port gateway region around the Bohai Sea Economic Rim (BER). Port competition is analyzed by multi-variable methodology and generalized common characteristics of SMPs compared to gateway ports, and the similarities of SMPs and SMEs are also compared. Later in this paper, we analyze the role of a SMP in such region in different variables: (a) cargo volume and market share; (b) international connectivity; (c) relative cluster position; (d) port city and hinterland connection; and (e) logistics and distribution function. The five-dimension analysis combined with in-depth cases study of typical Yingkou port describes a profile of SMPs in the BER and provides future study possibility for more SMPs cases worldwide.

The subject of this study is the analysis of the influence the global crisis has on entrepreneurship in Poland, and identification of activities undertaken to fade away it’s results, both on the national and EU level. Background of this analysis consists of a judgment of the influence the globalization process has on the conditions of activity and development of enterprises, mainly those from the SME sector. The results from the research indicate the low position of our country in the field of innovativeness, and a decrease of financial results has an effect on the change of the investment strategy, in the direction of reducing innovations. However, despite the worsening of the economic conditions, the number of newly established enterprises showed increasing tendencies. The most subjects were created in the group of small enterprises, employing from 10 to 49 people. This confirms the thesis, that during the crisis the SME sector, with creation of conditions which supported activity, effectively contributed to the social – economic development

Research background: SMEs make up an important segment of the economic system, not only in the national economy, but also throughout the EU, and their importance continues to grow. SMEs in Slovakia, according to the latest data of the European Commission, represent 99.9 per cent of all enterprises, constitute 70.7 per cent of jobs, and 61.2 per cent of value added in the economy. However, they are often confronted with market imperfections. SMEs frequently have difficulties in obtaining capital or credit, particularly in the early start-up phase. Their restricted resources may also reduce access to new technologies or innovation. Authors often deal with the impact of SME financing on their development. Madrid-Guijarro et al. (2016), Lee et al. (2015) claim that SMEs have difficulty in funding innovation and the worsening in general credit conditions has been more pronounced for non-innovative firms. Purpose of the article: The main objective of the conducted research was to analyze the conditions for the development of small and medium enterprises (the SMEs sector) in Slovak Republic, whereas the specific objectives were: (1) to determine the terms for gaining external sources of financing for the development of SMEs, (2) to examine the resources for innovation development in the SMEs sector, (3) to find out if SMEs are considered to be a competitive advantage. Methods: The research was conducted in the Slovak Republic in 2016. Participants were 193 Slovak companies that were classified as SMEs by the size class of employment. The research tool used for the study was the own questionnaire consisting of 38 questions and the demographics. The structure of the questionnaire allowed the authors to identify the group of questions concerning the most important conditions for the development of the examined sector referring to the business environment. The results were processed by chi-square method. Findings & Value added: On the basis of the conducted research of the sector of SMEs , it can be concluded that a large group of companies have difficult access to external sources of financing and this refers both to the access to the European Union funds, grants, bank loans and other instruments of the financial market. However, it occurs that: (1) in Slovakia, the smaller the enterprise, i.e. the fewer employees it hires, the easier the access to external sources of financing, (2) innovative projects are realized from company profits or a loan, (3) problems in Slovakia in accessing external funds due to the complexity of the process of approval of applications and documents and strict criteria for the assessment of financial capacity.

Omnipresent globalization engulfs more and more areas of life, which is why one of the most important processes in today's economy is shaping the so-called global village. Both globalization and the consequent internationalization constitute some of the biggest challenges for Polish companies. In addition, the intensity of competitive businesses in the global market forces companies to seek competitive advantages and improve their abilities in the process. The article contains the results of empirical research conducted in the years 2010-2011 in Greater Poland as part of the project titled "Determinants of competitive advantage of Greater Poland's food processing companies in the international market." This paper also contains data from both theoretical and empirical evidence on building competitive advantage in international markets provided by the analyzed group of internationalized SMEs. The aim of this study is to identify the factors determining the formation of competitive advantage of food processing companies from Greater Poland, which in turn contributed to the internationalization of those businesses. Secondary sources were used in pursuing the goal - theoretical implications were based on studies of literature, and they were verified by surveys. In addition, the following methods were used: description, visualization and statistical techniques. The time range of the undertaken work covers the years 2008-2011.

The paper presents the influence of mergers and acquisitions in the banking sector on the development of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The author discusses existing studies of banking sector consolidation and its influence on the development of SMEs. The article considers the influence of the relocation of bank headquarters after a merger or acquisition on lending to SMEs. It also examines the effects of consolidation on the bank’s credit portfolio and the cost of credit for SMEs. The work sums up analyses of how changes in banks’ organizational structures affect lending to SMEs. In his research, the author uses studies of consolidation processes in the American banking sector. Various American economists have reached conflicting conclusions with regard to the relationship between banking sector consolidation and lending to SMEs. These contradictions result from different research methods adopted by individual economists.

The paper is concerned with research into the relationship between human capital and innovation in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Poland. The authors describe the results of surveys conducted on a random sample of SMEs, 1,308 in 2007 and 1,346 in 2009. The surveys showed that human capital has a direct influence on innovation in small and medium-sized enterprises. The greater the human capital stock, the more often companies become involved in innovative projects by introducing new products and services, making major modifications to the existing range of products and services, changing the way in which they are organized, introducing new methods for providing services to customers, modifying technology, entering new markets and changing the ways of distributing products. An increase in human capital leads to an increase in internet usage and the popularity of online banking services, in addition to a higher percentage of companies with patents, licenses, registered trademarks and quality certificates, the authors say. They conclude by stating that the results of their research can be applied in economic policy and the management of human resources in small and medium-sized enterprises.

Research background: The risk management process is a key element in running a business. Moreover, it is basically one of the basic and most important internal processes in any company, regardless of its size. However, due to the extremely important role played by small and medium-sized enterprises in the economy, the problem of proper management of endogenous and exogenous risks becomes particularly important. Purpose of the article: The article aims to show the importance of risk management in the operations of modern enterprises in the SMEs sector and the attitudes of entrepreneurs towards key business risks. Methods: The research was based on data on 332 enterprises from the SMEs sector operating in Poland. The data was collected using the CSAQ method in the period from 12 of November 2019 to 9 of March 2020. The distribution of risk assessment in the studies was analysed using Tau Kendall statistics, while the risk management index was created by examining the attitudes of entrepreneurs towards individual risk factors. Findings & Value added: The results of the survey showed that three-quarters of enterprises did not manage risk in a formalized way and that decision-makers in enterprises often paid too little attention to the issues related to managing different types of risk. The article should, therefore, draw the attention of managers to the need to build appropriate procedures to enable effective risk management that creates opportunities for the safe operation of the enterprise. The added value of the work is a detailed analysis of the management of individual types of endogenous and exogenous risks, as well as an indication of what features of enterprises affect the effectiveness of actions taken in the field of controlling these risks. Research is valuable because of the small amount of studies that links managers' approaches to risk management with actual risk management effectiveness.

The authors used statistical tools to analyze the relationship of fiscal support instruments and the level of the investment of industrial micro, small, and medium–sized enterprises in comparison to large companies in Poland in the years 2006–2014. The results revealed that there is a significant relationship between the level of investment in micro–, small–, and medium–sized enterprises and the majority of tax instruments. There is a negative relationship between the instruments and some of other factors that should influence on the investments of enterprises.

Purpose: The aim of the paper is to present and assess professional development opportunities for older employees in SME. Methodology: In the process of desk research, the author has discerned a number of characteristics of training activities conducted by SMEs. The management of older employees’ professional development is discussed on the basis of selected research findings, i.a. CATI and CAPI surveys conducted in the framework of the “Comprehensive program of activation of people aged 50+” project carried out by the Department of Human Resource Management at Kozminski University in 2010–2012. Findings: The first part of the paper discusses the specificity of training measures undertaken in SMEs. According to a large body research results available, these include: informality, reactivity, short-term perspective, focus on solving current problems, “learning by doing”, focus on the development of specific skills and organizational knowledge, lack of professional organization of trainings. The core part of the paper focuses on the management of professional development of older employees in SMEs. The majority of surveyed firms have declared providing their older and younger employees with the same access to training. However, it does not always mean training is organised, or that employees aged 50+ participate in it. Moreover, the survey has proven the existence of significant differences in assessments and opinions among entrepreneurs and employees. Originality/value: This paper discusses professional development of older SME employees, which is a relatively new problem; it is based on an extensive body of research. Managing professional development of older workers is one of the most important challenges faced by SMEs in the twenty first century and it shall require extensive and thorough research in the future.

The article evaluates public and private information and consulting services provided to small and medium-sized enterprises in Poland. The author uses methods furnished by new institutional economics and the theory of market inefficiency. Gancarczyk compares an experimental group covered by public assistance against a control group made up of companies with similar features and using commercial information and consulting services. The comparison was made according to criteria such as accuracy, efficiency, usefulness, reliability and effectiveness. The study reveals that public authorities should continue providing free information and consulting services, the author says, because there are continued market inefficiencies, including an insufficient supply of consulting services and a strong asymmetry in access to information. The market inefficiencies in question call for further public assistance in this area, Gancarczyk adds. The analysis of the criteria of accuracy, efficiency, usefulness, reliability and effectiveness from the perspective of alternative costs confirms that free public services are more reliable than comparable services offered by private service providers, while the evaluation of effectiveness and usefulness for both groups was similar. On the other hand, public service providers displayed lower efficiency, Gancarczyk says.

Purpose of the article: The purpose of the paper is to provide a better understanding of the employee motivation issues in small and medium-sized Slovak enterprises; an examination of the motivational tools that influences the levels of satisfaction of employees of SMEs. Methods: This research was conducted with members of small and medium enterprises in Slovakia. A personal information form and the motivation factors questionnaire form were used as data collection tools. The ending contains the results of the research and conclusions. The Pearson-correlation and the Asymptotic Significance (2-sided) were used as statistical methods. Findings & Value added: The findings show that motivation is very individual and managers have a hard task by motivating their employees. Employees are more motivated by intrinsic factors rather than extrinsic, but none of the two can be overlooked by the managers.

The article examines the evolution of business support systems in Britain in 1973-2006, looking at the strengths and weaknesses of individual measures and suggesting how the British experience could be used in Poland. The analysis covers a period from the launch of Britain’s first government agency tasked with coordinating assistance to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to a time when the government delegated responsibility for helping businesses to regional authorities. Gancarczyk quotes interviews with British civil servants and employees at the University of Cambridge Centre for Business Research (CBR), an independent private research center specialized in evaluating business support policies. Gancarczyk also uses CBR research reports, scientific papers and reports issued by public institutions. The British system for providing support to businesses is based on regional assistance, Gancarczyk says. Efforts to modify the system have included the launch of moderately decentralized structures coordinated by regional authorities and focused on financing specific services rather than institutions. This has been accompanied by a tendency to rely on well-reputed organizations and efforts to avoid an excessive number of service providers and keep red tape to a minimum. According to the author, a similar policy should be followed by those responsible for developing Poland’s business support system. In particular, regional authorities should be encouraged to combine support for existing SMEs with assistance to business startups, Gancarczyk says. This would ensure the complementariness of central and regional measures, in addition to an effective monitoring and evaluation of these projects, Gancarczyk concludes.

This paper presents a new approach to the internationalization process for small and medium enterprises—the born global concept. The various attempts at defining “born globalists” are indicated. Among considerations are favorable conditions for the rapid internationalization of enterprises replacing the traditional sequential model. Particular attention is paid to the required competences of managers in born global companies. The characteristics of business managers from companies that are internationalized gradually as well as those that have chosen the fast–track to international expansion are also included.

Purpose: The paper investigates whether employees’ strategic awareness influences the shape of management control systems (MCSs) in Polish micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (mSMEs). Methodology: The study is based on data obtained from 223 companies between November 2010 and January 2012. The quantitative analysis used a set of variables which depicted MCSs: ‘goalsetting process’, ‘control framework’ and ‘organisation of control’. Strategic awareness was considered an independent variable. Findings: The results showed positive correlations between strategic awareness and considered variables. Regression models developed by the authors proved statistically valid. The study evidences, that increasing employees’ strategic awareness stimulates their participation in goal-setting, contributes to the development of more comprehensive MCSs, or may even imply formalisation of management control. Research limitations: The study does not include an analysis of the extent to which employees find MCSs useful in their work. This will be considered in future research. Another possible extension of the project is to identify factors which enable the capturing of the dynamic character of MCSs and their changes over time. Practical implications: The knowledge of MCSs does not explain whether or not the strategic orientation of a company stimulates a need for MCS. Such knowledge may be important to managers who have to face Polish employees’ general aversion to control. Originality: The study contributes to the limited body of knowledge in a scope of relations between employees’ strategic awareness and control mechanisms in Polish mSMEs.

Opis:
Research background: Internationalisation of entrepreneurial activities provides an ample opportunity for the growth and sustainability of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). When making their business activities international, SMEs are facing various obstacles. Investigating the key factors of internationalisation and their impact on SME decision making constitutes a key factor of the research work. Purpose of the article: The main purpose of the paper is to examine the impact of selected factors of SME internationalisation on the positive perception of the market risk. Higher export costs, differences in legal environment, taxes, and linguistic and cultural differences were set to be the significant factors influencing the positive perception of the market risk. Bearing the main purpose in mind, the Visegrad Four (V4 - Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary) were examined. Methods: The questionnaire in mother tongue of each country in online and paper form was used. The questionnaire consists of 77 questions divided into several sections. Likert five-point scale was used to allow the respondents to express their opinion. In total, 1585 responses were completed. A regression analysis was used to verify the statistical significance of the independent variables and to quantify the causal relationships (determining the direction and strength of the effect) on the dependent variable. As the variables are of one metric, a linear regression model (LRM) was selected to validate the hypothesis. Findings & value added: The internationalisation of SME activities brings along many risks and barriers that SMEs need to overcome if they want to enter international markets. Many SMEs consider the barriers and restrictions to enter foreign markets to be severe. Therefore, they decide to do their business domestically. It was established in the research that only 30.2% of the respondents expanded their business activities internationally. The biggest impact on the positive assessment of the market risk was found to have linguistic and cultural differences. They do not have a negative effect on the positive perception of the market risk, so they do not hinder SMEs in their international expansion. The second most important was the factor of the export costs. The factor of possible increased costs is quite important for SMEs in making their decisions whether to expand internationally or not. This factor also shapes a positive approach to assessing the market risk by SMEs. In the research, SMEs confirmed that potential higher costs do not represent a major barrier for them in shaping their attitudes towards the market risk. The remaining factors being analysed, namely differences in legal environment and taxes, did not have a significant impact on the positive assessment of the market risk internationally. The practical implications can be found in new information about market risk in process of internationalisation provided from four selected countries.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the present research note is to give an overview of research in the field of risk management in leasing SMEs as well as to present fields for future research. It intends to encourage other researchers to fill the current gap in research on risk management in general and on risk management in (German leasing) SMEs in particular. DESIGN/METHOD: The research note is based on interviews with 40 German leasing firms, thereof 35 SMEs. Qualitative research was chosen due to the nascent knowledge area and to explore cause-effect-relationships as well as to gain a deeper understanding of the practical requirements on risk management. RESULTS/FINDINGS: A research framework was presented based on the findings of the literature review. Based on the interviews, the framework could be drilled down into more operative, leasing-specific topics. Amongst others, it could be found that the risk management organisation is greatly shaped by the underlying risk strategy, the motivation for risk management, as well as the essential risks. These three elements form the basis for the operative and strategic risk management practice. Furthermore, it was differentiated in the different lifecycle phases of risk management. ORIGINALITY/VALUE: The presented research note is based on the first known research in the field of risk management for German leasing SMEs with a comparable number of interviews. Therefore, this research note includes a high degree of novelty. Adapting the findings in practice as well as combining it with other research questions might add significant value to risk management research as well as practice not only limited to the German leasing industry.

Opis:
In this paper we investigate the evidence of credit rationing in Italy during the period 2010-2016 characterized by evere distress in the banking system. The role of banks in the Italian economic system is crucial, since the Italian financial system can be classified as a bank oriented one. In addition, Italian economy is characterized by a very large share of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). This aspect adds value to our analysis given that literature usually assumes that the smaller the firms size the larger they suffer from credit rationing. By using a unique data set, provided by Bank of Italy, we get a twofold result. First, in Italy, the last economic and financial crisis has reduced the access to banking loans for SMEs, since there is a clear hump-shaped pattern in the time series of our measures of credit rationing. Differently, for large firms, it seems to have caused a larger volatility rather than a veritable credit rationing. Second, and this is our main result, matching micro and macro data, we do find support to the intuition that different banking crises exert different effects on firms’ financing conditions.

The innovation capacity of Polish small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) implies their development in the knowledge-based economy. While having been the object of numerous studies, the link between used information technology and innovation capacity in SMEs still requires understanding. The article seeks to define a model for the assessment of the impact of used information technology on the growth of the innovation capacity of Polish SMEs in four perspectives: organizational, process, product, and marketing. This model is tested empirically with survey data from 300 Polish SMEs. The results confirm that innovation capacity is not mediated by the used information technology.

Opis:
The paper is concerned with the “early internationalization” of firms and shows the state of research into this issue in Poland. The author reviews the body of research to date. The review covers leading Polish and international economic and business journals that have dealt with issues such as “born globals,” “international new ventures” and “early internationalization.” In all, the author reviews almost 30 scientific studies. Of these only one referred to a company that had ties to Poland. On the basis of the review, the author discusses concepts applied in research into early internationalization, in particular definitions of enterprises that follow this strategy. Among the criteria for distinguishing various types of “early internationalizing firms,” geographical factors are seen as the most important. The author found that the tendency to undergo early internationalization and the effects of this process were related to the competitive strategies employed by firms. The paper’s findings referring to early internationalization indicate that the process should also occur in the Polish economy. However, for the time being, there is no scientific evidence of early internationalization in Poland. International literature on the subject shows that further scientific research into early internationalization in Poland should primarily focus on the motives for early internationalization, the author concludes. Researchers should also turn the searchlight on the relationship between early internationalization, on the one hand, and industrial factors, business strategies and company resources, on the other.

Opis:
The article proposes a new approach to the process of internationalization of the firm. According to the author, international economists are increasingly critical of the traditional, stage approach to this process. Both theoretical discussions and empirical evidence question this approach, according to Przybylska. A growing number of companies, especially small and medium-sized ones, are going international in their operations far sooner than suggested by the traditional approach to internationalization. Firms that that compete internationally from their earliest stages, often bypassing the domestic market, are referred to as born global firms. The traditional approach to the internationalization process fails to explain why born global firms decide to compete on foreign markets immediately or soon after launching their operations. This means that born globals challenge the traditional theory of internationalization, Przybylska says. The author proposes a new approach to born globals to explain why a growing number of Polish small and medium-sized enterprises decide to compete internationally from their earliest stages. The author also sets out to highlight the characteristic features of this process. An additional aim is to show the differences between the traditional and new approaches to the internationalization of the firm. To achieve these goals, Przybylska formulates two research hypotheses. The first hypothesis holds that the traditional models of internationalization do not fully explain this process, especially with regard to small and medium-sized businesses. The other hypothesis is that there is a growing number of born globals among small and medium-sized enterprises in Poland. To confirm these hypotheses, the author conducted a survey. The obtained data proved both research hypotheses right, the author concludes.

Opis:
Political changes that were initiated in Poland in the last decade of the 20th century brought new challenges to small and medium-sized enterprises. Changes began to take shape in the perception of the function and role of enterprises in an environment in which they had to act. A relationship was recognized between establishing a lasting cooperation with entities functioning in the market and the achievement of greater benefits, not only in financial but also non-financial terms. The main objective of the study was to identify the relationship created by the sector of small and medium-sized enterprises in the Lubuskie Voivodeship with market participants, to determine the desired courses of action in terms of the enterprises’ construction, and to demonstrate the impact of these relationships on the socio-economic dimension of enterprises. The study adopted the idea that changes in the market, including rapidly growing competition, and what goes along with it, a transformation in consumer behavior, suggest the need for the sector of small and medium-sized enterprises to be active in shaping relations with the environment, contributing to the achievement of benefits in the socio-economic dimension, becoming a key success factor, and as a consequence, contributing to the survival and development of enterprises in the market. The study shows that small and medium-sized enterprises concentrate not only on achieving profits, but also on building lasting relationships with suppliers, customers, clients and other enterprises functioning in the market. It has been found that effective functioning, including the survival and development, is achieved by maintaining positive relationships with the participants of the market game. In this study we have used the analysis of the literature, the Central Statistical Office statistical data and survey results supported by categorized direct interviews with the representatives of small and medium-sized enterprises in the Lubuskie Voivodeship.

Właściwa polityka innowacyjna państwa powinna prowadzić do zmniejszenia luki gospodarczej, technologicznej i organizacyjnej między gospodarką Polski a gospodarkami krajów wysoko rozwiniętych. Polskie przedsiębiorstwa, zwłaszcza małe i średnie po akcesji do UE w rozwiązaniach innowacyjnych powinny upatrywać podstawę rozwoju gospodarczego oraz zwiększenia zatrudnienia. Istnieje szereg uwarunkowań rozwoju innowacyjności, do których można zaliczyć poziom wzrostu gospodarczego, poziom nakładów na naukę, rozwiązania prawne i regulacyjne.
Innovations are a process of creating and spreading technical changes which achieve certain economic and social benefits. Promoting innovations and implementing them in enterprises conditions a good position on the global market. An adequate innovative policy of a state should lead to decreasing the economic, technological and organisational gap between Poland’s economy and those of advanced countries. Polish enterprises, particularly small and medium ones, following the accession into EU, should perceive innovative solutions as the basis for economic development and employment increase. There are a number of innovativeness development determinants which can include economic development growth, level of outlays on education, legal and regulatory solutions.

The role of small and medium-sized enterprises in the development of national economies is difficult to overestimate. Managing SMEs requires reliable information coming from simple and clear records. In Poland, the classification of small and medium-sized enterprises and their record to a large extent depends on tax legislation and those regulations apply in the European Union. What rules apply to the Belarusian entrepreneurs who are not subject to the European regulations? The article aims to analyze the current legal status and the resulting differences in the records and accounts of small Polish and Belarusan businesses. The article also highlights directions of changes in the legislation of both countries in this area. The article states that one of the most important issues affecting SMEs is the need to reduce regulatory requirements and compliance costs for small and medium-sized enterprises. The article also highlights directions of changes in the legislation of both countries in this area.

The high formal and substantive requirements for access to these funds, which causes that these sources are not available for all enterprises, often are skipped. The objective of this paper is to answer the question of what attributes are typical for micro-, small-, and medium-sized enterprises that fulfilled all requirements and received structural funds subsidies. Additionally, this article presents opinions expressed on structural fund access barriers by entrepreneurs.
Fruitful cooperation between banks and businesses, which not only benefits stakeholders, but also provides aims particularly important in times of crisis, is the basis for efficient functioning of the economy. The SME sector has become so attractive, and banks are currently so interested in supporting companies from that sector, that co-operation between banks and businesses is beginning to yield much improved results. The amount of bank lending to businesses, which in 2011 increased significantly (by 14.2%) compared to 2010, is one of the measures of this cooperation. Comprehension of the specifics of the interbank market (in four areas - maintaining a bank account, lending, issuing and processing of payment cards, and online customer services) creates understanding of the banks' strategies, and relationships that occur within the Polish economy, between funders, which create supply of credit, and borrowers - small and medium-sized entities that make up almost 50% of the GDP, and provide employment for more than two-thirds of employees in Poland.

There is much research on women's entrepreneurship but little research on the types of women entrepreneurs. Therefore, the main goal of this study is to make a segmentation of female entrepreneurs. The data is based on a survey of one hundred and seventy-seven Bulgarian female entrepreneurs through a standardized questionnaire. For segmentation purposes, 10 original variables are used, which refer to the reasons for starting a business, typical characteristics of women entrepreneurs, competitive advantages, strengths and success factors, and barriers to their entrepreneurial activities. Two cluster analyses were conducted (hierarchical and non-hierarchical), resulting in three distinctive clusters. These clusters are tested for stability, validity and predictive power, while the profiling is performed with some demographic indicators. The results reveal that the first cluster includes female entrepreneurs who are driven by a desire for independence. Their management practices rely on the quality of products/services, personal customer service, family attitude towards employees and personal qualities and contacts. This cluster is dominated by young women with higher education. Unlike it, the third cluster refers to the women who became entrepreneurs out of necessity - to avoid unemployment. Older women with lower education prevail in this cluster. The second cluster is somewhere in the middle between the first and the third ones. The novelty of this study is the segmentation by certain variables that add to the understanding of women entrepreneurs and would help for better targeting of policies in support of women's entrepreneurship.

Innovation is a vital factor in today's markets and can dramatically change a company's competitive position. Despite its importance, innovation can also be a high risk adventure for companies due to the high level of uncertainty it entails. This article describes how well structured procedures can help companies guide through the whole innovation process, from idea generation to market launch. Furthermore, it illustrates how the decision making process regarding innovation management can be supported by appropriate software. First, currently existing innovation process models are investigated. How they support small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in their innovation activities is analysed and a modification Thom's well known process model is presented. Furthermore, a description of useful methods and instruments and their use within the innovation process is provided in the form of the innovation tool box. The innovation tool box helps companies both select and implement appropriate methods for the context at hand. A discussion of core factors and basic conditions for successful innovation management in SMEs rounds out the paper. A software tool for innovation management is then presented. Such software systematically supports innovation management and decision making throughout the whole innovation process. Furthermore, by demanding specific description and guidance of innovation methods it can additionally help companies in executing their innovation projects. How the database within the software can also be used to help companies distribute relevant information effectively is also described.

There is no doubt in Poland, the activity of small and medium-sized enterprises play a key unprecedented and significant role in economic development. These companies are of fundamental importance not only for the sustainable functioning of the economy, but also allows you to take advantage of the effects of rapid development of future generations. Author of the study by testing advocates, among others, that more than 1.6 million SME operators in Poland, the dominant force of the Polish economy and the source of growth, innovation, employment and social inclusion. Small and medium-sized enterprises are characterized by flexibility and ease of adaptation to market conditions and to respond to market needs. Still the number of newly established enterpris-es in Poland is very high compared to that on the deaths of firms, as evidenced by the high-potential entrepreneurship Poles. According to data from the Central Statistical Office indicate that companies currently operating in Poland is a place of work for more than six and a half million people. This means that as many as 7 out of 10 workers are employees of the sector of small and medium-sized enterprises. The level of entrepreneurship Poland does not stand out from the rest of Europe. In terms of the number of active enterprises occupy sixth place in the European Union.
