    Slavoj Žižek, PAN(DEM)IC! – COVID-19 SHAKES THE WORLD (New York and London: O/R Books) is a publicity stunt and a logistic achievement at least as much as a proper book. One must admire the speed with which it was produced and the foresight of its author, who began following the topic closely before most commentators in the West. It is all the more disappointing that the book’s central argument is not better organised and supported. This review considers both the moments of brilliance and the flaws of Slavoj Žižek’s most recent publication.

    Do najtrwalej zakorzenionych przeświadczeń na temat twórczości Roberta Bressona należy to, że francuski twórca pokazuje na ekranie jedynie fragmenty, okruchy rzeczywistości, którym nie stara się nadawać całościowej formy. W związku z tym reżyser ma stosować przemilczenia najistotniejszych wydarzeń w sferze fabuły, bądź też obrazować przestrzenie oboczne w stosunku do tych, w których akurat dzieje się coś istotnego – sięga więc po chwyty elipsy narracyjnej i metonimii. W opozycji do tego autor stara się dowieść, że do najbardziej tajemniczych miejsc ostatniego dzieła Bressona Pieniądz (1983) (ale i w jakiejś mierze także do jego wcześniejszych filmów) kategoria elipsy i metonimii się nie stosuje. Lepsze rezultaty w wyjaśnianiu tych miejsc daje Lacanowska filozofia Nieobecnego. Ostrożnie stosowane narzędzia Lacanowskiej psychoanalizy (przefiltrowane przez pewne pomysły filmowe Slavoja Žižka) prowadzą do nieoczekiwanych wniosków, kłócących się z dotychczasowymi konkluzjami na temat Bressonowskiego materializmu i transcendentalizmu.
    One of the most rooted beliefs about Robert Bresson’s works is that what the French director shows on the screen are only fragments, scraps of reality, to which he does not attempt to give an overall form. Therefore, the director seems to conceal the most significant events in the plot, or to visualize the adjacent spaces in relation to those in which something important is just taking place. This is the reason why he is considered to use frequently the narrational ellipses and metonymies. On the contrary, the author of the article tries to prove that the category of ellipsis and metonymy does not apply to the most mysterious places of the last work by Bresson, L’Argent (1983), and – to some extent – to his earlier films as well. Better results in explaining these places are to be found in the Lacanian philosophy of the Absent. When used with care, the tools of the Lacanian psychoanalysis (filtered through some filmic ideas by Slavoj Žižek) lead to unexpected conclusions which clash with previous conclusions concerning Bresson’s materialism and transcendentalism.

    In this paper I assess how Guy Vanderhaeghe’s early fiction criticizes the class-based and civil movements of post-1960s Saskatchewan through the recurring character of Ed. The protagonist of “Man Descending” and “Sam, Soren, and Ed” from Man Descending, the uncollected “He Scores! He Shoots!” and the novel My Present Age, Ed both condemns and epitomizes the contaminated and seductive gestures of the movements’ influences and enterprises. Vanderhaeghe deploys layers of social criticism: the first comments on the new urban progressive generation-the BMW socialists-while another manifests a counter-criticism that comments on those who challenge social progress, questioning their motives and the credibility of their critique. But what is a BMW socialist? A sociopolitical chameleon hiding behind pretense? Ed describes such a creature as a former “nay-sayer and boycotter” who “intended to dedicate his life to eternal servitude in a legal-aid clinic,” but then “affluence did him in” and now “his ass [is] cupped lovingly in the contoured leather seats of his BMW” (Man Descending 237–38). Vanderhaeghe’s early works criticize the contemporary middle class and progressivist movements of the second half of the twentieth century through this sociopolitical rogue-who in turn becomes a post-rogue. For Ed is ironically undercut by a counter-narrative that is often sub-textual, resulting in a fascinating appraisal of social ignorance, immobility, and unproductivity rather than of any specific ideology.

    In this article I will interpret the figure of living dead in terms of political allegory by relating three levels: the level of narration, theory, by which the narration can be decoded, and political situation, a symptom of which this narration is. In this way, I can trace the potential of two realizations of zombie figure in contemporary cinema: firstly, as a consumer, performing automated acts; secondly, as a revolutionary subject – excluded rebel. I treat both of those images as symptoms of radical political desire, its main motives and impasses.

    The article discusses the significance of the concept of ideology for social sciences. Although this concept was abandoned a long time ago in favour of the more “neutral” terms, due to Marxism and psychoanalysis it returned to social sciences in the second half of the 20th century. In the article, I present the concept of Louis Althusser, whose perception of ideological phenomena shifts them from the field of studies on cognitive mistakes and manipulation towards the socialization theory. I discuss shortly the psychoanalytical sources of this concept and point to the sociological tradition where similar concepts and problems can be found. I use the empirical example to illustrate the consequences of Althusser’s theory for understanding ideology, and Slavoj Zizek’s theory to show the ways out of certain impasse of this theory. In the summary, the question returns on the importance of the concept of ideology for social sciences.

    Opis:
    The topic of the article is the transition of the cultural picture of a historical figure in relation to the ideological influence of the dominant trends in culture and ideologies of the cusp of 20th and 21st centuries. An important point is the illustrative example which shows the determinations of such degrading-recreating tales: the inevitability of distortions, clouding of the root image. The example is Paul of Tarsus as a symbol of european culture and Western civilization on par with Homer, Plato, Octavian or Augustus. We're interested with the way Paul was perceived and depicted at the brink of modernity, at the beginning of the 20th century. Later we focus on the picture of Paul in late modernity and postmodernism. At first it is going to be a picture of philosophy which determines the intellectual and ideological trends of modernism. Not until we cover this ideological matrix can we go further to the only –  but very distinctive – literary picture, derivative of philosophy but enriched with personal contexts.
    Przedmiotem artykułu jest znaczące przekształcenie kulturowego obrazu historycznej postaci w związku z ideologicznym wpływem dominujących na przełomie XX i XXI wieku mód kulturowych i ideologii. Tkwiąca w człowieku narracyjna skłonność jest zarazem potrzebą nieustannego korygowania znanych z historii opowieści o wybitnych dziejowych postaciach – ich osobowościach, motywacjach, czynach (swoisty retelling rekapitulizujący znane i weryfikowalne bądź mityczne ich losy).

    Edgar Allan Poe’s eerie short story “The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar” is a particularly noteworthy example of the sublime, a psychological state in which one is overwhelmed by the magnitude of that which is perceived by the mind. Valdemar exemplifies the sublime in that his death has somehow been suspended in time because he was under hypnosis as part of a medical experiment at the moment of his passing. However, the story also draws particular attention to the means by which insight into the nature of death is acquired by the hypnotist who narrates the story. For a more comprehensive understanding of the sublime experience, one may turn to the psychoanalytic theory of Jacques Lacan and the postmodernist work of Slavoj Žižek, which lead to the conclusion that the dramatic chain of events in “Valdemar” is an example of the sliding signifier, and, moreover, that the instability of the signifier may explain the sublime effect.

    W artykule podjęty został temat relacji między rewolucją a postulatem emancypacji w myśli społeczno-politycznej Slavoja Žižka. Autor wskazuje, że w tekstach myśliciela rewolucja jest jedynym skutecznym narzędziem prawdziwej emancypacji klas społecznych wykluczonych. Artykuł jest efektem analizy treści zawartych w najważniejszych tekstach Žižka, w których poruszana jest tematyka rewolucji. Autor stosuje podejście interpretatywne i metodę hermeneutyczno- fenomenologiczną. Analiza dokonana została w trzech etapach. W etapie pierwszym autor wskazuje, że rewolucja jest u Žižka kwintesencją krytyki obowiązującego w społeczeństwie porządku symbolicznego. W drugim etapie autor dowodzi, że rewolucja jest formą radykalnego działania politycznego, które przynosi prawdziwą zmianę porządku. W trzecim etapie rewolucja zostaje ukazana jako wybuch oddolnej wolności i demokracji mas społecznych.
    The article discusses the relation between revolution and emancipation postulates in Slavoj Žižek’s social and political thought. In his texts, the author points out that the revolution is the only tool for the real emancipation of the excluded classes. The article is the result of the content analysis of few of the most important Žižek’s texts on revolution. The author uses an interpretative approach as well as hermeneutic and phenomenological methods. The analysis was made in three stages. In the first stage, the author points out that the revolution in Žižek’s thought is the quintessence of criticism of the symbolic order of the society. In the second stage, the author proves that revolution is a form of a radical political action that brings about a real change of order. In the third stage, the revolution is presented as an outbreak of freedom and democracy.

    The present methodological paper aims at answering the question whether the notionof ideological interpellation, put forward by L. Althusser, in the form given to it by S. Žižek, can be operationalised in order to be deployed as a tool for the critical reading of legal texts. The paper gives a positive answer to the question, indicating that the application of the said method may contribute to the opening of legal discourse towards the impact of critical theory. The paper consists of three parts. The first part presents Žižek’s theory of ideology, the second part discusses the notion of ideological interpellation, and the third part is devoted to a preliminary attempt at operationalising the said notion.

    Wraz z nowymi możliwościami, jakie dziś oferuje świat, powstały nowe zagrożenia. Jednym z badaczy zajmujących się tą tematyką jest słoweński filozof i krytyk kultury, Slavoj Žizek. Przybliża on problemy, z jakimi stykają się jednostki we współczesnej rzeczywistości, i z sobie właściwą manierą zajmuje wobec nich krytyczne stanowisko.
    With the new opportunities that the world offers today, new threats have arisen. Faster and better communication, trouble-free access to almost any interesting area of knowledge, as well as the importance of information and political correctness led to the expansion of the field of operation of the modern form of Marxism in these zones, but above all in culture. The individual, constantly under the influx of new stimuli, adopts certain attitudes, often generated on the basis of previously observable, or subconsciously instilled with the help of media, visual and cultural messages. One of the researchers dealing with this subject is the Slovenian philosopher and cultural critic, Slavoj Žizek. He introduces problems faced by individuals in modern reality and takes a critical attitude towards them with his typpical manner.

    Celem artykułu była próba rozwikłania kontrowersji interpretacyjnych wokół jednej z najbardziej oryginalnych telewizyjnych produkcji rozrywkowych ostatnich lat jaką był Towarzysz Detektyw. Produkcję tą można określić mianem pastiszu amerykańskich kumpelskich filmów policyjnych. Jego fabuła odnosi się do realiów socjalistycznej Rumunii lat osiemdziesiątych ubiegłego wieku i w prześmiewczy sposób opowiada o walce lokalnych milicjantów z amerykańskim zagrożeniem. Staraliśmy się udowodnić, że serial nie tyle szydzi z realiów tamtego ustroju, co w dużej mierze stanowi satyrę na propagandowe kino amerykańskie tamtych czasów. Choć humor w nim zawarty wydaje się prostacki i absurdalny, to mimo, czy wręcz dzięki temu posiada dialektyczną naturę, w której kpiny uderzają zarówno w ustrój kapitalistyczny i socjalistyczny. Ponadto staramy się rozwikłać kontrowersje związane z polityczną wymową serialu. Naszym zdaniem jego niejednoznaczność wynika z zastosowania strategii artystycznej bardzo zbliżonej do postmodernistycznej strategii artystycznej określanej mianem retrogardy.
    The aim of the article was to attempt to unravel the controversy of interpretation around the most original television productions of recent years, which was the Comrade Detective. This production can be described as a pastiche of American buddy police films. His story relates to the realities of socialist Romania in the eighties of the last century and in a mocking way tells about the fight of local militiamen with the American threat. We tried to prove that the show does not so much mock the realities of that socialist system, because is largely a satire on american propaganda cinema of cold war time. Although the humor contained in it seems crude and absurd, it still has a dialectic nature, in which mockery strikes both the capitalist and socialist system. In addition, we are trying to unravel the controversy associated with the political sayings of the series. In our opinion, its ambiguity results from the application of an artistic strategy very similar to the postmodernist artistic strategy referred to as retro-avant-guard.

Autor zauważa liczne wątki dekonstrukcjonistyczne w refleksji Baldwina na temat podmiotu literatury elektronicznej, a zarazem wskazuje na brak skrupulatnego przedyskutowania wcześniej wypracowanych koncepcji nieświadomości podmiotu piszącego w sieci. Przykładem takiej koncepcji jest Przekleństwo fantazji Slavoja Žižka, za pomocą którego autor artykułu pokazuje kilka przeoczeń teoretycznych Baldwina i stawia tezę o pewnej anachroniczności pojęciowej książki The Internet Unconscious.
    The article discusses Sandy Baldwin’s book The Internet Unconscious. On the Subject of Electronic Literature. The author takes note of the numerous deconstructionist threads in Baldwin’s work on the subject of electronic literature, and at the same time points to the absence of scrupulous discussion of previously developed concepts of the unconscious of the subject of online writing. One example of such a work is Slavoj Žižek’s The Plague of Fantasies, which the author uses to show some of Baldwin’s theoretical oversights and finally present the thesis that The Internet Unconscious is hindered by an anachronistic conceptual framework.

    Artykuł prezentuje interpretację rewolucji październikowej w pismach społeczno-politycznych Slavoja Žižka. Myśliciel ten analizuje wydarzenia rewolucji 1917 r. w kontekście historiozoficznym. W rozważaniach posługuje się on pojęciami z zakresu filozofii dziejów Hegla oraz Marksa. Interpretacja Žižka przedstawiona została w pięciu krokach, w których zobrazowano najważniejsze elementy koncepcji.
    The article presents the interpretation of the October Revolution made by Slavoj Žižek in his social and political writings. The thinker interprets the events of the 1917 revolution in a historiosophical context. He uses some concepts of the philosophy of history of Hegel and Marx in his deliberations. The Žižek’s interpretation is presented in five steps, which illustrate the most important elements of this concept. The article is based on the content analysis of Žižek’s main texts that include the most important considerations about the Bolshevik revolution.

    Opis:
    Right at the very beginning of the pandemic, Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Žižek published a monograph about his thoughts on the first few weeks of the new situation. In it, he presents both his personal experience of the pandemic and his opinions on the overall changes that it might subsequently bring forth. As many times before, he once again calls for a new global order, basing his calls on the faults of the current system that the pandemic revealed in their entirety. He calls that world order “new communism” rooting it primarily in the need for solidarity and more executive power given to global organisations such as the World Health Organisation, as well as a more active role of the state during crises.
    Na samym początku pandemii COVID-19 słoweński filozof, Slavoj Žižek, opublikował książkę ze swoimi przemyśleniami na temat pierwszych kilku tygodni nowej sytuacji. Przedstawia w niej zarówno swoje osobiste doświadczenie pandemii, jak i opinie na temat ogólnych zmian, które może ona wywołać. Ponownie wzywa do utworzenia nowego globalnego porządku, wskazując na wady obecnego systemu, które w całości ujawniły nowe realia. Filozof nazywa ten światowy porządek „nowym komunizmem”, zakorzeniając go przede wszystkim w potrzebie solidarności i większej władzy wykonawczej przyznanej globalnym organizacjom, takim jak Światowa Organizacja Zdrowia, a także bardziej aktywnej roli państwa podczas kryzysów.
