Opis:
The properties of a mechanical resonator provide a valuable ability to measure liquid density and viscosity. The viscosity of liquids is of interest to researchers in both industry and medicine. In this paper, a viscosity sensor for liquids is proposed, which is designed based on an electromechanical resonator. In the proposed sensor, a capacitor is used as an electrostatic actuator. The capacitor is also used to monitor the frequency changes of the proposed resonator. The range of displacement of the resonator and capacitor in response to different fluids under test varies according to their viscosity. The design of the proposed sensor and its electrostatic and mechanical simulations are reported in this paper. Also, the effect of viscosity of several different liquids on its performance has been analyzed and presented experimentally using a prototype.

Opis:
This work presents a numerical simulation of aviation structure joined by friction stir welding, FSW, process. The numerical simulation of aviation structure joined by FSW was created. The simulation uses thermomechanical coupled formulation. The model required creation of finite elements representing sheets, stiffeners and welds, definition of material models and boundary conditions. The thermal model took into account heat conduction and convection assigned to appropriate elements of the structure. Time functions were applied to the description of a heat source movement. The numerical model included the stage of welding and the stage of releasing clamps. The output of the simulation are residual stresses and deformations occurring in the panel. Parameters of the global model (the panel model) were selected based on the local model (the single joint model), the experimental verification of the local model using the single joint and the geometry of the panel joints.

Opis:
Chock-shield support is usually used in undergroud coal mining to protect the roof. However, as the mining depth gets deeper, impact load that came from the roof becomes stronger and more frequent. This causes the support to bear a large number of dynamic loads, and reducing its reliability. To improve the support performance of the chock-shield support, the mixed-kinetic model was established using the mechanical-hydraulic co-simulation method. The load distribution law of the support joint under impact load form different stability forces, impact load amplitude, and impact frequency is discussed. The mechanical-hydraulic cooperative response of the chock-shield support are obtained. The results show that different joints show typical non-uniformity characteristic during the loading process. The proposed mechanical-hydraulic co-simulation method can more accurately obtain the dangerous points of hydraulic support reliability. The results of this study will help to improve the reliability of the chock-shield support.

Opis:
Optimal design of engineering structures and technological processes requires taking into account various factors affecting the state of strain and stresses in the structure. Coupled thermo-mechanical analysis enables, among others, determination of undesirable changes in a body shape resulting from the implementation method of the initially-boundary conditions, for example, time-varying load and physical properties of the material depending on the temperature. They are also used to determine residual stresses remaining after manufacturing to prevent revalued stiffness and rigidity of the designed construction. In this study, coupled thermo-mechanical analysis illustrated by metal machining operation is presented. The commercial code MSC.Marc has been used to develop a coupled thermo-mechanical finite element model of plane-stress orthogonal metal cutting operations. Metal cutting is one of the most important and common manufacturing processes in the car industry. A thermal mechanical transient analysis is performed to convert mechanical work into heat by plastic deformation of the workpiece material and friction during metal machining operation. The finite element mesh distortion, due to large deformations, requires a remesh technique. The influence of parameters of the 2D and 3D finite element mesh adaptation on plastic deformation and temperature generated in the cutting processing is considered.

This paper discusses the dynamic system solution with three degree of freedom consist a weightless cable thrown over two fixed side pulleys and the third, free pulley moving along the rope. The cable is stretched with weights attached to its ends and the weight of the free pulley causes the cable dip. Passive resistance on the pulleys stops them from moving. The mathematical description uses a system of differential equations combined with complex kinematic relationships and a description of the passive resistances. The set of equations is converted to a format suitable for numerical solution and a simulation model is created in the Matlab -Simulink program. The results are presented in the form of various relations of kinematic and dynamic system variables.

Opis:
The melt cleaning is an important aspect in the production of high-quality aluminum castings. Specifically inclusions within the melt and an excessively high hydrogen content lead to defects and undesired porosity in the castings. Although it is possible to reduce the amount of hydrogen and oxidic inclusions by purge gas treatment and the use of melting salts, it is impossible toremove oxides (bifilms) created during filling of gating system. Paper deals with the effects of melt quality and the placement of a filter in the filling system on Al-7%Si-Mg alloy mechanical properties. Three different filters were used: (a) rectangular ceramic pressed filter with 3 mm thickness (b) cubical pressed ceramic filter with thickness 10 mm (c) cubical pressed ceramic filter with thickness 22 mm. The results showed that the highest tensile strength values were obtained from the filter with thickness of 22 mm. Numerical simulation analysis of the filling process showed that velocity reduction by filter is the major phenomenon affecting the mechanical properties. Another evaluated aspect during experiments was capability of filters to retain old bifilms. For this purpose multiply remelted alloy was prepared and analyzed. Results showed that filter efficiency increases with decreasing melt quality as a result of possibility to retain "old” bifilms better than small and thin "new” bifilms.

Opis:
A method of modelling of nozzle and rotor blade rows of gas turbine dedicated to simulations of gas turbine performance is proposed. The method is applicable especially in early design stage when many of geometric parameters are yet subject to change. The method is based on analytical formulas derived from considerations of flow theory and from cascade experiments. It involves determination of parameters of gas flow on the mean radius of blade rows. The blade row gas exit angle, determined in turbine design point is a basis for determination of details of blade contour behind the throat position. Throat area is then fixed based on required maximum mass flow in critical conditions. Blade leading edge radius is determined based on flow inlet angle to the blade row in the design point. The accuracy of analytical formulas applied for definition of blade contour details for assumed gas exit angle was verified by comparing the results of analytical formulas with CFD simulations for an airfoil cascade. Losses of enthalpy due to non-isentropic gas flow are evaluated using the analytical model of Craig and Cox, based on cascade experiments. Effects of blade cooling flows on losses of total pressure of the gas are determined based on analytical formulas applicable to film cooling with cooling streams blowing from discrete point along blade surface, including leading and trailing edges. The losses of total pressure due to film cooling of blades are incorporated into the Craig and Cox model as additional factor modifying gas flow velocities.

Opis:
This article presents simulation models of trailer air brake systems in configurations without a valve and with a differential valve, thus demonstrating the rationale for using a valve to improve system performance. Simplified mathematical models using the lumped method for systems without and with a differential valve are presented. The proposed valve can have two states of operation depending on the configuration of relevant parameters. These parameters can include the length of the control pipe, the throughput between chambers in the control part of the valve and the forcing rise time. Based on the calculations, it was found that the differential valve with large control pipe lengths can reduce the response time of the actuator by 42.77% relative to the system without the valve. In the case of transition of the valve to the tracking action, this time increases only by 9.93%. A force rise time of 0.5 s causes the transition of the valve from the accelerating action to the tracking action, with 9.23% delay relative to the system without a valve. The calculations can be used in the preliminary assessment of the speed of operation of pneumatic braking systems and in the formulation of guidelines for the construction of a prototypical differential valve. In conclusion, it is suggested to use a mechatronic system enabling smooth adjustment of the flow rate between chambers of the control system of the differential valve.

Assumptions made while modelling the oil film between the ring and the cylinder liner in IC engines, especially concerning the boundaries of the wetted area of the ring face surface, were discussed and the assumptions adopted for the developed model were presented in this study. It was assumed that the model should take into account partially flooded lubrication, which meant that the boundaries of the ring wetted area had to be determined. Based on the adopted assumptions, a model for calculation of the oil film thickness between the cylinder and moving rings, and thickness of the oil film left on the cylinder by the ring pack was developed. A computer application operating in the Windows operation system was developed to carry out numerical calculations. The results of initial numerical calculations were also presented. The proposed model can be utilized to determine the effects of the ring pack geometry, especially the geometry of the ring surface, on parameters of lubrication. These parameters, including the oil film thickness, distribution of pressure in oil film or tangential force, are crucial for friction and wear of cooperating surfaces, oil consumption, and flow of gas from the combustion chamber to the crankcase, thus playing a role in the durability, fuel consumption and emission of an engine.

Opis:
An experiment in cooling of gas turbine nozzle guide vanes was modelled numerically with a conjugate viscousflow and solid-material heat conduction solver. The nozzle vanes were arranged in a cascade and operated in highpressure, hot-temperature conditions, typical for first turbine stage in a flow of controlled-intensity, artificiallygenerated turbulence. The vane cooling was internal, accomplished by 10 channels in each vane with cooling-air flow. Numerical simulations of the experiment were conducted applying two turbulence models of the k-omega family: k-omega-SST and Transition SST implemented in the ANSYS Fluent solver. Boundary conditions for the simulations were set based on conditions of experiment: total pressures and total temperature on inlet to cascade, static pressure on the outlet of the cascade and heat flux on the surface of cooling channels. The values of heat flux on the surface of cooling channels were evaluated based on Nusselt numbers obtained from experiment and varied in time until steadystate conditions were obtained. Two test cases, one with subcritical outlet flow, and another one, with supercritical outlet flow were simulated. The result of experiment – distributions of pressure, surface temperature, and heat transfer coefficients on the vane external surface were compared to results of numerical simulations. Sensitivity of the vane surface temperatures and heat transfer coefficients to turbulence models and to boundary-condition values of parameters of turbulence models: turbulence energy and specific dissipation of turbulence energy was also studied.

Molecular dynamics simulations were conducted with the Stillinger–Weber potential at room temperature to study the mechanical properties and find the mode-I critical stress intensity factor of buckled two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal silicon mono-sulfide (SiS) and germanium selenide (GeSe) sheets. Uniaxial tensile tests were simulated for pristine and pre-cracked sheets. 2D Young’s modulus of SiS and GeSe are estimated at 38.3 and 26.0 N/m, respectively. Their 2D fracture strength is about 3.1–3.5 N/m. By using the initial crack length with the corresponding fracture stress, their mode-I critical stress intensity factor is estimated in the range from 0.19 through 0.22 MPapm. These values differ within 5% from those obtained by the surface energy and are very small compared to the reported fracture toughness of single-crystalline monolayer graphene.

Opis:
Durability of engineering structures depends on the structure itself and environmental conditions. Aggressive substances can penetrate concrete matrix causing chemical degradation of material skeleton. At the same time the material is exposed to mechanical exertion which contributes to additional deterioration. This work attempts to analyze chemo-mechanical degradation of concrete from phenomenological point of view using numerical simulation. Diffusion of corrosive species was determined through local diffusion parameters and balance equations with sources and outfl ows prescribed by stoichiometry of chemical equations and reaction extent constant. Degradation of concrete was described with use of an additive scalar damage parameter adopting adequate evolution equations. The cellular automata method used is shown to be an effective calculation method. Contour lines of species concentration and partial damage parameter values were obtained using numerical simulation of the processes in 2D space. As expected, progressive degradation of concrete decreased bearing capacity of the RC section. Numerical simulation of residual cross-section strength was obtained by use of short-time destructive loading tests.
