Opis:
In the present work, fruits from two plant species, Rosa canina L. and Sorbus aucuparia L., popular in traditional folk medicine in Serbia, were studied. The aim was to examine and compare the efficiency of the ultrasonic extraction with different solvents regarding physicochemical properties, polyphenolic profile of extracts, as well as their tyrosinase inhibitory and antioxidant activity. The polyphenols evaluation indicated that water was the best solvent for a thorough extraction of bioactive compounds from the R. canina fruits, while propylene glycol-water (45:55, v/v) was the most efficient regarding S. aucuparia fruits, followed by ethanol-water (7:3, v/v). Only flavonoids were more abundant in S. aucuparia fruit extracts. R. canina water extracts showed a higher antioxidant activity, using several in vitro tests with different working principles. However, S. aucuparia ultrasonic extracts with propylene glycol-water (45:55, v/v) demonstrated a higher potential concerning tyrosinase inhibitory and chelating activity. Therefore, these ultrasonic extracts, being great sources of natural anti-tyrosinase inhibitors and antioxidants, can be considered as promising candidates suitable for pharmaceutical application, as great sources of natural anti-tyrosinase inhibitors and antioxidants.

Opis:
In this study, the physicochemical properties, antioxidant capacity, sensory properties, and phenolic and mineral profiles of instant rosehip teas prepared using spray-drying (SD) and freeze-drying (FD) were compared. The yield of instant tea produced using FD and SD was 23.75 and 21.25 g/100 g, respectively. The total color difference between the FD and SD tea was 50.74, with the SD sample exhibiting higher redness and yellowness. The FD tea was richer in ascorbic acid than SD tea (67.2 and 59.4 mg/100 g dry weight, DW, respectively). The mineral content ranged from 0.20 mg/kg DW (copper) to 2,837 mg/kg DW (potassium) in SD tea, and from 0.31 mg/kg DW (copper) to 3,083 mg/kg DW (potassium) in FD samples. The total phenolic content was 1,315 and 1,495 mg GAE/100 g DW of SD and FD samples, respectively. The antioxidant capacity of instant rosehip teas was determined as total antioxidant capacity, ferric reducing antioxidant power and DPPH radical scavenging activity. In all these assays, FD tea was found to have a higher antioxidant capacity. In the phenolic profile determined by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) technique, protocatechuic acid dominated in instant rosehip teas prepared using both methods. The main flavonoids identified were quercetin, quercitrin, hyperoside and luteolin 7-glucoside. Following the sensory analysis, the panelists have generally preferred the FD tea in terms of aroma and flavor, while opting for the SD tea in terms of appearance and color. In conclusion, although freeze-drying allowed obtaining a product with a higher antioxidant capacity and antioxidant content than spray-drying, both drying methods may be considered suitable for the production of instant rosehip teas and ensure obtaining a functional food product.

The aim of the present study was to compare carotenoid extracts of Rose hips (Rosa canina L.) with regard to their phytochemical profiles and their in vitro anti-Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), cytotoxic, multidrug resistance (MDR) reversal and radical scavenging activity. Carotenoid composition was investigated in the different fractionation of rose hips, using extraction methods. Six main carotenoids - epimers of neochrome, lutein, zeaxanthin, rubixanthin, lycopene, β,β-carotene - were identified from Rose hips by their chromatographic behavior and UV-visible spectra, which is in accordance with other studies on carotenoids in this plant material. The active principles in the carotenoid extract might differ, depending upon the extraction procedures.

The objective of this study was to investigate the ranges of intra- and interindividual variability on the example of R. canina. For this purpose, four flowers were collected randomly (72 flowers in total)from 18 wild shrubs of R. canina growing in one population in Poznań (Poland)and then, from each flower, 50 correctly formed pollen grains (200 pollen grains per each individual)were selected. Inter- and intraindividual pollen grain variability was characterised based on 3600 pollen grains. They were analysed for seven quantitative features, i.e. length of polar axis (P), equatorial diameter (E), thickness of the exine along the polar axis (Exp), length of ectocolpi (Le) and P/E, Exp/P, and Le/P ratios. Our study revealed highly significant differences among flowers of the particular R. canina individuals with respect to all pollen grain biometrical features. In addition, it showed that the assessment of the full range of variability in pollen grain biometric features within one individual (shrub)was more reliable if we examined several pollen grains from several flowers than for the same number of pollen grains derived from a single flower. We also found statistically significant differences among particular individuals in all pollen grain features. This proves that in order to well characterise a population of a given species from the point of view of palynology, the plant material should derive from a possibly numerous number of individuals (shrubs).

Opis:
Ellagic acid (EA) is a natural antioxidant, belonging to the group of polyphenolic compounds. It displays a broad spectrum of pro-health effects, ranging from the prevention of cancer to antiviral properties. It is present in many fruit from the rose family (Rosaceae): strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and walnuts as well as cranberries and grapes. The available literature states that the fruit of roses, in addition to their aesthetic and functional applications, also show therapeutic properties, which, among other things, are associated with a high content of polyphenols, including ellagic acid derivatives. The aim of this research was to determine the differences in the content of free ellagic acid in the fruit of selected rose species. The test material consisted of freeze-dried sublimation and ground fruit from the following species of roses: R. canina, R. moyesii, R. pendulina. The fruit was separated into two fractions: flesh and seeds. Quantitative analysis of free ellagic acid was carried out by spectrofluorimetry. The free EA was present both in the flesh and in the seeds of the studied species of roses. Its content in the mentioned fractions varied depending on the species. The flesh of R. pendulina was characterised by the highest level of EA in free form (247.72 μg·g–1 of dry weight). The seeds of R. moyesii proved to be the most abundant in free EA (105.69 μg·g–1 of dry weight).

Shoot tips from in vitro plants of four rose species were cryopreserved by the droplet vitrification method. Optimized conditions involved exposure to loading solution for 20 min, then treatment with plant vitrification solution (PVS2) for 20 min (Rosa agrestis, R. canina and R. dumalis) or 30 min (R. rubiginosa) followed by freezing in liquid nitrogen. Survival rate ranged from 78.3 to 95.1%, depending on the species. Regrowth rate of shoot tips was 50.5% for R. agrestis, 63.2% for R. rubiginosa, 71.4% for R. dumalis and 78% for R. canina. The preculture of donor plants in a medium with 0.25 цЫ sucrose facilitated the isolation of shoot tips and increased regrowth rate after cryopreservation. Plant regeneration was carried out in Murashige and Skoog medium with 1 цЫ 6-benzylaminopurine, 1.5 цЫ gibberellic acid and 0.087 M sucrose. Plants regenerated from cryopreserved shoot tips did not display morphological alterations in comparison with non-cryopreserved shoot tip - derived plants.

Opis:
The morphology of pollen grains of 16 species from the Rosa L. genus were studied (i.e. R. agrestis, R. canina, R. dumalis, R. gallica, R. inodora, R. jundzillii, R. kostrakiewiczii, R. majalis, R. micrantha, R. mollis, R. pendulina, R. rubiginosa, R. sherardii, R. tomentosa, R. villosa, and R. zalana). The material came from 16 native localities of those species in Poland. The measurements are based on at least 30-50 randomly selected, fully developed pollen grains per specimen. In total, 500 pollen grains were examined. They were analysed for 13 quantitative features of pollen grains and exine sculpturing and the following qualitative traits: outline, shape, "operculum" structure. The diagnostic features of pollen grains of studied species were: length of polar and equatorial axes and length of ectocolpi. The above-mentioned pollen grain morphological features make isolation of one species possible: R. gallica. R. gallica is distinguished for its highest values of the length of polar and equatorial axes, and the length of ectocolpi. The obtained analytical results of operculum and exine sculpture features, considered as diagnostic, corroborated only slightly their priority significance for the isolation of the examined species and sections. The collected data failed to confirm fully the current taxonomical division of the Rosa genus into sections (only section Gallicanae from R. gallica is isolated) as well as consanguinity relationships between the examined species from the Caninae section. On the dendrogram, both species closely related with each other as well as those from other developmental lines were found in the same group. These equivocal results are by no means surprising because the Caninae section is the most polymorphic group in the Rosa genus, and contemporary Caninae are of the nature of a swarm of R. canina hybrids as a link combining all taxons of the section.

The article reviews the electrophysiological characteristics of pre-cambial phloem material in undergrowth shrubs. The electrophysiological properties of hazel (Corylus avellana L.), elder (Sambucus nigra L.) and other undergrowth shrubs are compared, as well as how these characteristics change depending on stand density indices. Differences in electrophysiological characteristics reveal the crucial role of light for the growth, development and persistence of undergrowth shrubs. I suggest that a quantitative assessment of electrophysiological characteristics should be undertaken when managing forest stands for the creation of desirable undergrowth.
