Opis:
The XIX century Polish evangelical opinion-forming circles emerged in the Kingdom of Poland.Their views were reflected in press, mainly in “Zwi-astun Evangeliczny – Evangelical Herald”.The leading representative of these circles was Leopold Otto, pastor in Warsaw and Cieszyn, editor of “Zwiastun”.Issues affecting women used to be quite frequent topics of sermons and articles. For evangelical circles woman had to be, above all, a wife, mother and good Christian that does not go beyond the frames of the “the 3 K’s” designation. Apart from the family and religious spheres no other role was allocated to women. However, she had to be mother and an active housewife running the household in a modern way as for those times.Any postulates of equality or professionalization of women were decidedly rejected.Any attempts aimed to change women's position and hierarchy of duties were treated as attempts to violate the moral order and, consequently, the social order as well.Woman had to be exclusively a good Christian, mother and wife. Those were her fundamental tasks necessary for the functioning of society. This pattern was, as a rule, observed in Protestant families in the Kingdom of Poland at the turn of the XIX and XX centuries.Similar pattern was followed in Catholic communities.

Opis:
Protestants have been present in Podlachia since the Reformation; but Lutherans appeared in the city of Białystok and its surroundings in the 18th century. They were, among others, architects and craftsmen in the service of hetman J. K. Branicki and some staff of postal stations. In the nearby Zabłudów there was a Reformed parish already in 1608. More Lutherans settled in Białystok after 1795 when, as a result of the Third Partition of Poland, the city was annexed by Prussia and became the capital of the province and department. A rapidly-growing congregation was established with a military chaplain as their pastor. When Białystok was ceded to the Russian Empire in 1807, the structure of parish members changed: in lieu of soldiers and clerks, well-qualified craftsmen became the majority. Some expansive development of the congregation occurred after 1831 when due to economic reasons many textile factories were moved from the Łódź industrial region to the region of Białystok. By the end of the 19th century, the parish had about 12 thousand members. This paper describes the history of the parish until World War I. It presents profiles of pastors, and describes church buildings, as well as charity, educational and cultural actions undertaken by the parish.

The article describes so-called mnemotopoi of Polish Protestants’ image of the past included in the language conceptualized into repeating forms. The term is related to E.R. Curtis and his concept of common places (loci communes). The conducted analysis allowed to distinguish between three forms of commemorating topic (or simply topoi). First of them has initial character and is connected with Biblical traditions, strong awareness of German roots of Reformation and with relationships with German cultural circle. Second of them is the topic of threat and harm, including also the topos of besieged fortress. The third is the topic of choice (e.g. the topic of salt of the earth) – cultural and religious superiority of Protestant countries saved in their historical memory. According to Evangelicals, the religious superiority means eliminating magic from religion.

The Synod of the Lutheran Church in Poland has proclaimed the year 2011-year of the Pastoral Care. That is the reason why the article focuses on the pastoral care one of the most important missions of the Protestant Church. The author shows first the place of the ecclesiological approach in current Polish theological discussion among protestants, and then discusses the subject in the light of the Symbolical Books of Lutheranism, i.e. the Book of Concordia from 1580, especially the Augsburg Confession. The understanding of the Church is one of the most important subject of the early Reformation theology, but the pastoral care is almost absent in the records of confessional books of the 16th century. The author concludes that the pastoral dimension of the Church is rather more of practical than a theoretical nature. In fact the pastoral care is a particularly challenging task of the whole Christianity.

The article completes the picture of the situation of the Lutheran con-gregation in Białystok in the interwar period. It presents lively educational and cultural activities conducted by the parish, the latter to include: choirs, library, pastoral care, youth groups, military chaplaincy. The article also de-scribes the parish's relationship with the German People's Union in Poland which resulted in bad reputation and troubles for the community in the post-war period, although in fact these relations were limited and terminated quite fast. The issue of personal and national tensions within the congregation - illustrated by the case of division in the years 1931-32 - is also discussed. At that time two separate parish councils functioned that did not recognise and fought each other (one of them even questioned the authority of the Consistory in Warsaw and considered joining the congregation of another church). It even came to an intervention of the state authorities. After the breakout of World War II Podlachian Protestants – officially considered to be Germans – were mostly evacuated to German Reich. Those who remained were mostly exiled by the Soviet to Siberia or Kazakhstan andsome converted to Roman Catholicism. After the war only few remained. The congregation was closed in 1978 but since 2002 it is again active and vital. The article ends a series of four articles summarizing the history of the Lutheran congregation in Białystok.

Opis:
The essay is dedicated to the influence of the Protestantism on economic effectiveness. According to the well-known Max Weber’s thesis the Christian culture was of crucial significance for the incremental creation of the market economy principles. In turn the Protestantism formed fundamental background for „modern rational capitalism”. Richard Swedberg, famous economic sociologist, following Max Weber, pointed out three factors bound up with Protestantism that had an impact on modern capitalism. Firstly, Dr Martin Luther stressed that the calling of man is the everyday solid work. Secondly, Jean Calvin defined economic success as the proof of the grace of Lord. Thirdly, American Protestantism demands absolute obedience to the commandments and honest behaviour towards other people. The diligence, activity and honesty were the source of trust among people (today defined as a component of „social capital”). The main thesis of the essay focused on the role of Protestant inspiration in forming trust as the source of contemporary economic effectiveness. Sociological research (among others conducted by Ronald Inglehard) proved that relatively high level of trust (especially „bridging social capital”) is a vital feature of highly developed economies of the Protestant countries. However, it should be stressed that there exists no simple cause-effect relationship between these two phenomena. Rather, they are aspects of a complex correlation network.

The article presents the main missionary organizations both Protestant and Orthodox working in the Caucasus in the nineteenth century. By presenting them in a rather general and brief form, the article is intended to emphasize the importance of the Bible translations in the missionary projects. The Bible itself constitutes a text which influences the missionary approach, as well as the cultural and social practices of the people to whom the Bible and its translation is addressed. The main assumption of the text is, however, that the changing attitudes to the Bible among the Christians living in the Caucasus were related to the appearance of the Protestants and their understanding of the Holy Book.

The Pentecostal movement is presently the fastest growing current in Christianity. We are dealing with a high degree of diversity. Dynamic development is accompanied by questions about the preservation of the traditional vision of ecclesiology and soteriology. The Pentecostal movement grew out of Protestantism, especially its evangelical wing. It contains a traditional for this environment soteriological doctrine, partly also ecclesiological. Many theses about doctrine of church are still being defined. The Final Reports of the dialogue conducted by the Vatican Secretariat for Christian Unity with certain Pentecostal Churches, leaders and theological circles are a great help in this regard. The article is an attempt to answer the question about the reception of the formula of St. Cyprian: extra ecclesiam nulla salus in the classic Pentecostal movement.

The 20th century was tragic for Protestantism on the Polish terri-tory.After restauration of Poland’s sovereignty in 1918, Evangelical community amounted to around 900 thousand people, the majority of them were followers of German nationality.Five different Churches of the Lutheran and Prussian Union confession as well as Moravian Congregation (Hernhuts) existed in the Second Republic of Poland. These Churches weremainly of a local nature and their union seemed to be a distant goal.World War II almost led to the destruction of the Polish Protestantism. The Nazi terror, communist repressions and reluctant attitude of a part of the Polish society, identifying Evangelicals exclusively with German element, questioned the future of Protestantism in Poland. After World War II parishes of the Prussian Union, Old Lutheran, Evangelical-Augsburg and Helvetian Churches practically ceased to exist. However, the Evangelical-Augsburg Church did survive and under the Act of the Parliament of 4 July 1947 all other parish communities were included into its structure, unfortunately after they had been illegally deprived of their property. In fact, in 1947 the Evangelical-Augsburg Church became the all-national Church and the only successor of all Lutheran and Union Churches on the Polish territory.

Opis:
The beginning of the 16th century in western Christianity’s history was marked by the appearance of its third tendency, i.e. the Protestantism. In its two main confessional variants (Lutheranism, Calvinism) the protestant theology phrased different models of understanding of a church. The Lutheran ecclesiology was defined in The Augsburg Confession, Art. 5: “That we may obtain this faith, the Ministry of Teaching the Gospel and administering the Sacraments was instituted”. Teaching the Gospel and administering the Sacraments are thenceforth notae ecclesiae, i.e. constitutive marks of a church. In the 16th century and later the bond between autonomous, national Lutheran churches had only a spiritual character. Bringing the Lutheran World Federation to life in 1947 was a result of a long process of looking for a deeper bond between the Lutherans all over the world. LWF’s ecclesiology was developed on consecutive General Assemblies. In 1984 in Budapest the member churches’ delegates accepted the “pulpit and altar fellowship”, understood as a principle of membership and relations between LWF’s member churches. 1990 the Assembly in Curitiba (Brazil) introduced a change to the status, describing the Federation as a communion of churches. In the 21st century the communion of Lutheran churches is based on the Reformation’s idea of spiritual communion of believers, gathered around the common teachings of Gospel and altar, aiming at closer cooperation in the world, with advanced autonomy and possibility to formulate opinions independently or to continue local traditions. It is a completion of Reformation’s ecclesiological vision and an alternative model to integralist visions.

A descendant of the Czech Brethren, Pawel Hulka-Laskowski belonged to a group of thousands of Polish Evangelists with foreign roots who consciously chose Poland as their homeland during the period of partitions. Many became Polish patriots. For this reason, Poland’s welfare was one of the main themes in Hulka-Laskowski’s scientific and literary output. He propagated the concept of open patriotism. In his opinion, an affiliation to the Polish nation was primarily of a cultural, not ethnic nature. The stereotype of a Pole-Catholic was dangerous to the Polish nation, because it repelled people of foreign origin who were not Roman Catholics. In his educational activity among workers, Hulka-Laskowski emphasised the importance of civic education, stressing the significance of education for love as a way of making the Polish nation more attractive to foreigners.

This article is devoted to a comprehensive discussion of Jews’ conversion to Protestantism in the Ottoman Empire in the cities of Istanbul and Izmir, during the decade before the Hatt-i-Șerif of Gülhane, the first Tanzimat decree in 1839, until the Hatti hümayun decree of 18 February 1856. It also considers the attitudes of the Ottoman authorities and the Jewish communities toward this phenomenon, as well as the extent to which three missionary societies, the London Society for Promoting Christianity among the Jews, the American Board of the Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM), and the Free church of Scotland mission, succeeded in prevailing upon Jews to give up their faith. The missionaries worked with the millenarian anticipations and looked forward to intensive activity which would result in the conversion of the Jewish masses. To achieve their objectives they relied on evangelical, educational and philanthropic activities, and on medical missions. The article discusses the motives and the social and economic status of converts to Christianity and those given Christian religious instruction, and describes the communities’ steps taken against Jewish conversion to Christianity in the 1820-50s. The article concludes that all three missionary societies that operated in the Ottoman Empire acknowledged the fact of their failure to achieve the goal of converting the Jewish masses, and took solace in those dozens who were converted through their efforts.

The paper describes the participation of Tomaszów Mazowiecki’s Protestant population (of German origin) in the January Uprising (1863–1864). Special emphasis is placed upon four particularly spectacular biographies. Arthur William Benni (1839–1867) was a social revolutionary fighting for democracy in Russia and for the freedom of Poland and Italy. Dr. Karol Henryk Abraham Benni (1843–1916), known under the pseudonym ‘Henryk Wilk’, was a secret emissary and an insurgent in 1863–1864; he later became a distinguished physician, as well as a social worker and economic activist. Two protestants of German origin who fought in the January Uprising lived to their old age in the restored Republic of Poland. Karol Henryk August Sarré (1843–1927), a young January insurgent, served in the punitive detachment of the Tsarist Army, and was finally deported to Irkutsk (Siberia) for twelve years. Gustaw Glaesmann (1844–1928), a member of the national gendarmerie in 1863–1864, was deported to Siberia for 25 years. After his return from Siberia (1889) he worked as a teacher, and finally was buried in Tomaszów Mazowiecki.

The issue of salvation is at the heart of Protestantism. Jesus Christ – God’s Son, true God, and true man is the Savior of all humankind. The traditional Protestant (Evangelical) theology, in both Lutheran and Calvinist confessional forms, regarding the exclusive salvation of the Church was in line with the teaching of the ancient Church. The denominational books of Lutheranism, especially the Augsburg Confession, showed that Lutheran theology in the science of salvation is biblical and it is in line with the teaching of the first councils of the indivisible Church. The teaching of the Evangelical-Reformed tradition followed in the same direction. The Heidelberg Catechism discusses in detail the Apostolic Creed, deriving from it the basic concepts of both soteriology and ecclesiology. In the opus magnum of John Calvin - Institutio, we find a direct reference to the concept of St. Cyprian proclaiming that there is no salvation outside the Church. With the emergence of the Neoprotestantism in evangelical theology and spirituality (Schleiermacher), the question of the exclusivity of the Church in the process of salvation ceased to be obvious.

He describes the phenomenon of conversion in neopentacostalism and the type of spirituality based on subjective religious experience. At the base of the neopentecostal way of thinking lies intense experience of God’s presence transforming human. From it is born the desire to experience communication with God. Axiom: extra ecclesiam nulla salus in the neopentecostal movement is understood as an experience of God’s presence throughout the whole community which rooted in „newborn” leads to a spousal relationship with Jesus Christ.

In Protestantism, the woman’s place was at home, with her husband and children, the most important function being that of wife and mother. Single women were treated as a certain deviation from the applicable norm. However, according to Protestant principles, every individual should be socially useful, including the so‑called “old maids”. An area where they could prove useful was the Evangelical church and charity. Many women became deacons, sometimes called Protestant nuns, working in Evangelical hospitals and nursing homes, and helping pastors in their pastoral work. Some were active in Protestant charities and were actively involved in parish life. Less wealthy single women could also count on material help from the congregation. It was clearly indicated that the place of “old maids” was to be in the church environment.

Jej rozpowszechnienie prowadzi niekiedy do fałszywych sądów. W tle tego głównego celu opracowanie pokrótce przedstawia zarys szczególnego poglądu, szeroko rozpowszechnionego w różnych koncepcjach dotyczących kapitalizmu i rozważających go w perspektywie religijnej.
One of the most common sociological convictions is the Weber’s thesis about the genetic relationship between Protestantism and capitalism. The proliferation of this thesis at times leads to false premises as for instance the opinion that the capitalist social order has emerged from the Luther’s theology. The article aims to answer the question of Luther’s contribution to capitalism, it also shows the crucial theological aspects of the Luther’s teaching on economic order. Furthermore, it presents specific and widely spread views which considers capitalism in the religious perspective: that of Walter Benjamin and that of Max Weber.

Dynamic development of the Lutheran parish of Białystok, including the nearby towns in Podlachia (presented in previous paper) got unexpectedly interrupted when the World War I broke out. While retreating, the Russian Army devastated factories and evacuated pat of the population, especially those of German origin; others fled to Germany. All of the above turned Białystok from an important industrial centre into a city full of unemployment and poverty. The Lutheran parish, despite its very poor financial situation, met new needs of its members and other citizens and started certain new charity actions for the poor and victims of war; these included e.g. orphanage, soup kitchen, home for elderly, medical support. When the Polish jurisdiction was restored after 123 years, the parish in Białystok joined the Evangelical–Augsburg Church in Poland. New circumstances generated a number of new problems, both internal – like tensions between pro-Polish and pro-German parties coexisting in the congregation, and external – like annexation of a church, attempted by a local priest. When the World War II broke out, most of community members were deported. This paper describes an outline of the history of the parish from the outbreak of World War I to World War II, including all the charity’s actions, and also mentions other protestant communities in Białystok.

Dlatego zredukowano je do minimum.
The many aspects of the early Protestant spirituality (during the sixteenth century) make it difficult to present a systematic bibliography for that period. Interest in the early protestant spirituality has considerably increased among scholars during the last decades. We must therefore proceed to a severe selection. Only studies that deal with the most significant topics will be included. No breakdown of the material can be completely satisfactory. As the main point, however, is to give as clear a picture as possible, one must distinguish in sixteenth century protestant spirituality the following character: biblical, Christocentric, ecclesiastical. Subdivisions of the subject matter in each period will necessarily overlap. But we will reduce this to a minimum.

The article is devoted to Washington Gladden, one of the leading figures of liberal Protestantism – a religious movement that developed at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries in the United States. The times in which Gladden lived were a period of changes taking place in American society, such as capitalist social relations, centralizing banking sector, and developing industry. As a pastor, he also faced these changes as a journalist, leader of the social gospel movement, and creator of liberal Protestantism. Through his sermons, articles, books, and specific charitable and social activities, he aimed to realize the Kingdom of God on earth. The article an-swers questions such as how Gladden understood the church, how he imagined Christianity, and how he created liberal Protestantism. It also explores how the movement functioned and what content it conveyed.

Opis:
Hilaire Belloc, prolific British writer and friend of G.K. Chesterton, was widely known for his firm Catholic faith and strong belief in the leading role of the Catholic Church in establishing the European Civilization. In combination with his interests in economy, this resulted in his consistent historic vision of the western world, with Reformation as a turning point. European society, once existing as a servile state, was transformed by Christianity into a distributist state, which was regarded by Belloc as the best possible social-economic system. But when rapid Reformation changed the common morality, then arose Capitalism, which degraded the majority of population, and threatened the society with further perils of socialism, and even the return of the servile state. In this Article the Author argues, that in spite of the popular opinion, the incontestable influence of Reformation was not a positive factor in the development of the European Civilization, but in fact it resulted in a sudden change of morality, which eventually destroyed a once tested and effective system, putting the society in danger of further perilous consequences.

The topic of the paper is the origin of the capitalist mode of production as seen by two giants of the social sciences: Max Weber and Karl Marx. In other words, first Weber's famous theory of the capitalist spirit is examined in-depth, not restricting oneself to the overview of the critical literature, but adding a couple of novel counter-arguments put forward by the present author himself. Weber's treatment is then compared with an equally famous Marxian theory of primitive capitalist accumulation. Better to bridge the two approaches in question, Grossman's essay has been used to that end. It is also pointed out that from the perspective of modern historical studies, Marx was largely right, and his theory is compelling to this day.

Opis:
The idea of social and civilization evolution, not based on reason and science, but on the power of religion and the church, was created by Benjamin Kidd in 1894. At that time, it enjoyed global interest and contributed to the creation of a new scientific thought – sociology. Its creator was called a „social prophet,” and his work became an inspiration for thinkers and activists of the social gospel movement, led at that time by, among others, Washington Gladden, Walter Rauschenbusch, Lyman Abbott, William D.P. Bliss or Josiah Strong. At the height of his fame, Kidd’s work inspired the founders and activists of the social gospel, but was also the subject of public criticism. Over time, however, religious thought in the United States of America has undergone a metamorphosis, also in the space of the social gospel movement. Hence, the important question is whether the contemporary thought of this British sociologist is still present and plays a role in shaping the doctrine of the social gospel? Is the social evolution described by Kidd present in the dogma of contemporary liberal Protestantism? Can we still talk about social evolution according to Kidd in the context of the influence of liberal evangelism on the activities of social gospel movements? These and other questions will be answered in this article.

Opis:
Walter Rauschenbusch was an important figure in American liberal Protestantism, the social gospel movement, and American theology. He served for many years as pastor of the Second German Baptist Church in New York and a professor at Rochester Theological Seminary. His most notable work was Society of Christian Social Crisis (1907), in which he set forth his ideological assumptions for Christianity in the United States. These ideas referred primarily to the vision of the Kingdom of God on Earth, which was to be instituted mainly through eliminating social inequalities and facilitated by the spread of love of neighbor and social justice. In addition, they were inspired by the figure and activities of Jesus Christ, whom the American pastor saw not only as a son of God, a prophet, and, before all, as a social activist. Hence, to act effectively, Rauschenbusch created a movement based on Christian socialism, as reflected in the Society of Christian 168 sebastian dama Socialists and later in the social gospel movement, which significantly changed not only Christianity in the United States but also the society of the country.
