Opis:
The paper aims to discuss the means of expressing and inferring emotions using as an example the lexical and iconic layers of the blogosphere of the French Outraged movement. The analysis is based on a corpus of content taken from a dozen blogs written in France between 2010 and 2013. In the course of the analysis based on theoretical assumptions of modern discourse and argumentation analysis, the author concludes that the expression of outrage in the texts under investigation is a kind of emotional form which the active co-authors of the blogs actualize in their own manner and by doing so they create not so much pathos but rather ethos – both individual and communal, based on a system of shared values and beliefs. On the other hand, argumentation through emotions usually takes place indirectly, mostly by means of axiologically charged subjectification of discourse.

Opis:
The political discourse is a complex linguistic phenomenon which has no unequivocal perception in linguistic literature. The inaugural speech of president elect is one of the most important types of this discourse. The tradition of this genre was formed many years ago in the United States of America. It is a new genre in Russia, but it is becoming more and more important. Thanks to the intention of speech (unifi cation of the nation), its emotional saturation, the conformity of its content with citizens’ expectations, the inaugural speech is an effective instrument of political activity. The material for the research was president Putin’s inaugural speech in 2012. The author analyzed the composition of speech, its themes and linguistic features. The research proved that the examined speech complies with all functions of the genre and it also contains almost all elements typical for it.

Speech acts identification by the participants of interaction in public communication The purpose of this article is to analyze the public discourse in terms of speech acts identification by the participants of the interaction. The research material comes from two radio programs (“Radio Zet-Guest” and “The 7th Day of the Week”), in which a journalist interviews politicians. Political discourse is not a field of creating sincere speech acts, but rather a playground on which identifying speech acts is strategically important. The preinteraction is very important, which determines both the creation and perception of speech acts. This manifests itself in breaching the preferred communication behaviors, and instead using avoidance strategies. With the development of the discourse in time it becomes more and more authentic and discourse participants “truly” identify speech acts.

The present paper attempts to give an otline of the expressiveness of the discourse encountered in the mass media. Examples are drawn from selected Polish and French periodicals retrieved from the Internet: le Monde, Libération, Tribune, Newsweek, Gazeta Wyborcza. The political stance of these titles is characterized alongside. Main focus is laid on headlines which on account of their localization usually abound most with conspicuous discursive effects, including the ones having specifically expressive character. A priviledged position of the mass media in approaching real life problems is discussed first. Then, various wording techniques implemented in press titles are subject to a thorough analysis. Expressiveness and establishing a particular ranking of values are viewed as two concurrent and close-knit phenomena. Furthermore, expressiveness is shown to reflect current political trends and to comply with main characters of political regime in a given community. Finally, examples exhibiting a high degree of expressive markedness are analyzed. Their peculiar linguistic features result, among others, from delexicalization, NPs exhibiting a strong axiological bias, and neologisms.

Opis:
Metaphor is not infrequently madę use of in political discourse as a suggestive means of expressing a meaning and communicating assessments, that is, as an instrument of persu- asion rendering it possible to shape the recipients’ views, opinions and behaviours from the standpoint of interests of a specified political party or social group. This role is best served by metaphors with a simple syntactic structure, highly conventionalised and em- ploying stereotypical content in their vehicle. In her description of metaphor’s me- aning-creating mechanism, the author emphasises the particular status of metaphoric pre- dicate that is suggested by the utterance’s sender and independently produced by the rece- iver using the metaphor vehicle’s connotation. The valuing so expressed is not subject to direct negation and so is quite powerful in terms of persuasiveness. Use of metaphors car- rying different valuing connotations whilst originating from a single notional field, as well as inventive witty transformation of the metaphor carrier practised in order to divert one’s attention from the evaluating content transferred by the same, can serve to neutrali- se an assessment being suggested by a metaphor. Ludic operations, often carried out on metaphors, enhance by themselves the persuasive power of utterances madę by politi- cians.

There are many active processes which could be observed in vocabulary used in modern Russian discourse. The reason of these processes is connected with changes in social and political life in Russia. These changes are noticeable especially to a large extent in vocabulary because extralinguistic factors have the largest effect on vocabulary. The aim of a present article is to analyse semantic neologisms created by means of morphological derivation. The lexical material was divided into three groups on the base of the way of creation of a new meaning.

Political Discourse
Opis:
During the period discussed in the article (1997 - 2005) actors from the Polish political scene were deeply divided by their history - being a part of "Solidarność" or having communist roots. In the process of building their political identity, both right-wing and left-wing parties didn't strive for removing historical divisions but instead they exposed them in order to emphasize their distinctive features. The effect was that communist history became legitimization not only left-wing but also right-wing which was originally born as a symbol of struggle against communism. An assumption taken in this article is that all kind of language including political language is the ever-transforming process being the outcome of changes in social consciousness. This idea contradicts the theory according to which Polish political scene is ruled by ritual chaos. First of all the very target of political discourse is to be listened and supported and this is achieved by being flexible to the audience which requires also being organized and creative. The other politics feature supporting my point of view is richness of rhetoric and phraseology used in discourse. Such associations as those with death, religion or love that were applied in analysed articles are very vivid and thus emotions they cause can be quite strong, which makes political problems crucial on the grand social scale. Finally it is hard to talk about ritual chaos when the great consequence of political discourse is the change in people's attitudes. It appears that the audience influenced by colourful words of politicians and journalists is able to modify their memory about their own history. What we encounter here is the authentic social change that is only possible when social drama is played.

The time of the turn XX and the XXI century in Poland is a period in which the discussion of crime and methods of fighting it is very vivid. People interested in the matter are not only lawyers but, what is more important, also politicians, journalists and, thanks to media, ordinary citizens. The main interest is focused on the ways of reacting to crimes. Questions traditionally asked are: "Will the crime rate decrease when the punishment is more severe?" and, consequently "Should we make law stricter because of the increasing crime rate?". The cause of the discussion is a reform of criminal law, especially some points of new criminal code introduced in 1997, and some proposals of other amendments. Obviously, the tendency to follow strict criminal policy is a combination of many different factors, among others are the fear of crime and the feeling of insecurity, which have been increasing gradually along with the real increase in crime rate. The growing fear of crime was also broadly presented in media. The feelings were used by politicians, who included they ways of fighting the problems in their political programs and election campaigns.

Opis:
Mass media discourse about politics consists of three overlapping fields: public discourse, discourse of politics and political discourse. Political discourse is defined as a discourse of symbolic elites present in the media, including journalists. In news programs there is a combination of political discourse and a discourse of politics: politicians appear in their political roles, while comments made by experts and reporters can be viewed as a part of the political discourse. The main topic of the article is the tabloidization of the political discourse in Polish television news programs. According to Frank Esser’s concept of tabloidization it takes place on two levels: micro and macro, and this paper focuses on the second one. The main goal of the paper is to present how the phenomenon of tabloidization of the media discourse on politics has appeared in Poland since the beginning of the 21st century. Some empirical data from different periods of time are presented to provide content analysis of news programs on commercial and public TV. Differences between the way politics is discussed in public and commercial TV are visible, but the tendency described as tabloidization is observed in both.

Indignation in the political discourse has a long rhetoric tradition because of its moral aspect. Our analysis is based on the study of emotion in discourse proposed by Ch. Plantin (2011), the notion of subjectivity in language (C. Kerbrat-Orecchioni 1980) and the concept of ethos D. Maingueneau (1999).

The author demonstrates that poetic discourse approaches to the journalistic one by the set of ideologemes, the social evaluation, the author’s intention to change the perception and the worldview of the recipient, the strategies of persuasion and linguistic manipulation. Special attention is given to irony and citations as interpretive methods of formation of the evaluation, and to expression of subjectivity. The article concludes the convergence of poetic and political discursive practices. The research is based on the material of Russian socio-political poetry of the circle of the “New literary review”, fellonneau poetry of D. Bykov and L. The present paper carries out a political discourse analysis of three Iraqi designation speeches which were delivered respectively by three different designated prime ministers Mohammad Alawi, Adnan Al-Zurfi, and Mustafa Al-Kadhimi in the first half of 2020 after the resignation of the then Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mehdi as a consequence of October 2019 Uprising which broke out as a reaction to corruption, social injustice and bad services. The analysis is based on the categories suggested by Van Dijk (1997) which include topics, superstructure, syntax, lexicon and rhetoric. The results of the analysis have revealed a great similarity in the overall structure of the speeches and some but interesting differences in some parts or aspects of the speeches. The similarity reflects the convergence in the topics as well the circumstances at the time of delivering the speeches while the differences indicate the approach each of the speakers adopts in identifying the problems and suggesting solutions as well his personal style of expressing things.

Research demonstrated that in the analyzed material (programs of 11 Russian parties) three rhetorical strategies are employed: the lowering strategy, the elevation strategy and the theatricality strategy, implemented with the help of various tactics. The most frequently used strategy is undoubtedly the theatricality strategy, verbalized through the following tactics: encouraging, cooperating, separating, promising, anticipating and warning.

The continual growth in the importance of commercial media, as proven by its growing share of the audience market, invites us to scrutinize the ways politics is mediated through these chan- nels. One may assume that the very essence of commercial activity influences the ways and forms of conducting political discourse by these media, and as a result influences the picture of politics. The aim of the article is to point out the shift away from traditional forms of political debates as well as the change in formula of covering political phenomena and events, and political processes by the media, and the specifics of the convergence of television genres, in which politics is present. The article will attempt a reconstruction of medial political reality, based on content analysis and the analysis of the forms of political discourse in commercial television, particularly in news programs using “Fakty”, broadcasted by TVN, as a case study.

Arming and disarming. Metaphorical expressions in political discourseAccording to Cognitive Metaphor Theory, metaphorical expressions are considered to be a projection of a clearer and more easily comprehensible cognitive structure on a more abstract or complicated target domain. In other words, metaphorical expressions explain complicated and more abstract notions in terms of easier and less abstract phenomena. However, the choice of a source and a target domain often imposes a certain point of view and sanctions specific interpretations. This characteristic of metaphorical expressions makes them an extremely useful device for political persuasion. Since the emergence of Cognitive Metaphor Theory there has been a growing number of research focused on the relations between figurative language, power and ideology. This paper focuses on processes of arming and disarming metaphorical expressions in political discourse. The author outlines basic tenets of Cognitive Metaphor Theory, as well as some of its implications on the relations between figurative language, persuasion and ideology. This paper gives also a very concise overview of previous research on arming and disarming metaphorical expressions by Teresa Dobrzyńska [1994] and a study on metaphorical expressions and ideology by Michael Billig and Katie Macmillan [2005].

The text focuses on the analysis of the programme, which is categorised by the editorial team as “political journalism”. The author is trying to show her doubts regarding the lack of connection between the definition of the word ‘politics’ and anything that appears in media’s offer in such category. She points out how the broadcasters nurture in the audience the belief that the viewed programme deals with political problems and the issues of public area which are important for conscious citizens. Among the set of tools and means used throughout the programme, she highlights the following: usage of concealing type indicators, activation of keywords included in semantic fields derived from the noun ‘politics’; moving the focus from the public area to the private one; staging antagonistic scenes and critical situations. The presented tendencies to stage the reality fit into the mechanism of ‘seducing with politics’, using the citizen sphere as a pretext for focusing first and foremost on emotions, assumptions and controversies.

The article analyzes the complementarity of image and text in political cartoons taking into account the following parameters: Prior Text(s), Producer, Cartoon, and Viewer/ Reader. In the meaning-making process, the viewer/reader constantly alternates between image and text. The two modes of communication can convey the same message(s), each of the modes can strengthen the meaning of the other; the two might have nothing in common, yet, when combined, will produce a meaningful message. Visual metaphors and metonymies play an important role in the construction of meaning in political cartoons. They are analyzed from the point of view of conceptual metaphor and metonymy theory and its application in multimodal communication. Humour in political cartoons is also briefly discussed.

The main aim of this paper is to identify patterns in the communication of irony in political discourse, and to determine the role of negative emotions in conveying ironic meaning. The first point to be considered is how politicians use irony, which communicates a contextually incongruent meaning. To be specific, the author’s aim is to investigate what mechanisms of negative politeness are communicated by irony. The second issue to be analysed is the role of negative affect and irony in political discourse. Consequently, the author’s aim is to investigate whether such an interface is socially acceptable and justified in parliamentary discourse. The empirical part of the research seeks to probe the language-affect interface in human interaction. The qualitative and quantitative elements of the analysis lead to results that corroborate the findings relating to the Tinge Hypothesis of Shelley Dews and Ellen Winner (1995: 3), which underscore that irony mutes negative emotions. The paper also takes the perspective of linguistic pragmatics and sociology to highlight the individual factors which play a crucial role in communicating irony. These include face-threatening acts (henceforth: FTAs), role-taking, and negative emotions (evaluations). Another aspect to be considered is the role of the speaker in producing ironic meaning. The author expounds upon the patterns of communication among politicians who share affect-imbued ironic meanings.

The article presents the analysis of two speeches given by Rory O’Neill, also known as Panti Bliss, who is so far the most recognisable Irish drag queen. Apart from being a drag queen, Rory O’Neill is also a political activist whose performances were part of the campaign before the referendum concerning the 34th Amendment to the Constitution of Ireland. In the analysis both these aspects of the speaker’s identity are taken into consideration. Although the analysis is mostly linguistic, it also considers extralinguistic aspects of communication, e.g. the performer’s appearance on stage, as contextual elements are essential in sociolinguistic contexts. Thus, the analysis draws from the theoretical background focused on political discourse and the language used by drag queens to a detailed account of the two speeches in order discuss them in relation to the standards of both a drag performance and a political speech.

The article is an example of a discourse analysis dedicated to the decreasing relevance of the left-wing politics in Poland. In the course of the article author, first, reconstructs explanatory factors behind the phenomenon of the „disappearing left in Poland” that has been proposed by several authors since the 90s. In the second step, author applies this framework to the field of parliamentary politics, political discourses as well as to wider political context (i.e. media). The explanatory factors has been classified into five groups: adaptation (adjusting the left to the neoliberal order), denial (unsuccessful defense of leftist values and tradition), misrepresentation (consent of the political elites of the left to changing political affiliation of the trade unions that folated towards the conservative right), capture (exploitation of the crucial elements of the doctrine like „welfare state” by the national- Catholic milieus), incoherence (different ideological priorities of the „young” and „old” activists of the Left) and eventually liked with the „vanishing voter” situation in Poland.

Opis:
The article analyses the use of irony in contemporary political discourse. Referring to selected examples taken from the discourse of politics, the author shows how the cited statements express their ironic characteristics. The article demonstrates that hidden irony is not always obvious and easy to recognize, and it may take a form of an extremely aggressive rhetoric. Using this virulent form of irony containing the type of negative evaluation proves to be extremely effective tool for insulting, expressing at least disrespect for the rival on the political scene.

The aim of this research is to examine the linguistic approaches employed in referencing social and political traditions in the United States and Russia, investigate disparities in linguistic strategies within both political discourses, and assess variations in semantic outcomes. The analysis has been conducted to answer the following research questions: (1) What are the linguistic methods of referring to social and political traditions in America and Russia? (2) Do the linguistic strategies differ depending on the political discourse? (3) Is the semantic output different depending on the political discourse? The findings reveal marked differences between the two discourses, reflecting the social and political discrepancies between the political systems of the United States and Russia.

This article analyzes the typology of speech genres in contemporary political discourse. The material for research is served by the utterances made by Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin. The concept of a speech genre was defined and its features were listed. Based on the research of Polish and Russian politolinguists, the most important features of political texts were highlighted, such as: officiality, public, being part of the institutional, mass and persuasive communication. The author also presents the criteria available in the scientific literature for the division of speech genres used in political discourse (way of perception, main text function and length) and on this basis, divides the Russian president’s statements into written and oral; ritual, indicative and agonal as well as into small, medium and large. The analysis leads to the conclusion that V.V. Putin’s discourse is dominated by oral, indicative and medium genres.

Today the mass media plays a more and more important role as a source of infor-mation about different aspects of social life. Thus, it has become the main source of political knowledge as well. The more information citizens obtain from mass media, the bigger power the media has over its audience. Therefore, various players – journalists, publicists and politicians (using this feature of contemporary media) want to influence the state of social consciousness. One of the methods of such influence is the instrumen-tal use of survey results in political and media discourses. In their article the authors describe different examples of these argumentations.

In August 2012, the police massacre of thirty-four workers during a strike in Marikana, South Africa highlighted the interconnectedness of political power, state violence, and capitalism. Taking as its starting point the sweeping ramifications of the Marikana strike, this article asks how the state attempted to restore its moral authority amidst a grassroots social movement. The methodology consists of a critical political discourse analysis of references to Marikana by members of the national ANC government, as well as dissenting voices in rival political movements, between August 16, 2012, when the massacre took place, and June 30, 2015, five days after the release of the Farlam Commission report. This paper argues, from a critical realist standpoint, that the power of political discourse lies not in the text itself, but in the speaker’s intentions, the audience’s interpretations, and the public’s responses. Such a framing reveals the systems of domination underlying all discourse, such that varied, malleable concepts produce visible, violent social structures. It finds that in the aftermath of Marikana, the national ANC government, faced with comparisons to the apartheid regime, represented itself as both the voice of the marginalized and an impartial mediator between competing narratives. This approach stood in contrast to counter-discourses, particularly that of Numsa, that positioned the state in opposition to the oppressed working class. These two discourses reflect divergent understandings of the nation at large. Ultimately, the ANC’s conciliatory approach failed to address many of the strikers’ grievances, creating a vacuum in political discourse that increasingly is filled by anti-capitalist voices from below.

By analyzing Ukrainian political discourse I managed to track the imprudence fond in the formulation of comments for different reasons – an inability to report or inability to control emotions, as well as a direct and deliberate strategy of applying all possible means of modeling verbal aggression, especially the use of invectives. The postulates of the author are confirmed by illustrative material – examples of statements made by Ukrainian politicians from different parties and groups, selected from the transcripts of the Supreme Council of Ukraine (Verkhovna Rada) from the year 2013.

Key theoretical and methodological approaches of foreign and national scholars towards the understanding of the essence of «political person» in the ancient discourse are investigated in this article. The role of the politics in the process of the ancient state building and its influence on the formation of the notion of «political person» is analyzed. It is defined that the development of the political organization of the society, human pursuit of collectivity and sociality contributed to the participation of people in the politics. The definition context of the human problem in the age of antiquity outlines the importance of such categories as «spirituality» and «morality» as the key principles of social life conceptualization and the regulators of human behavior, which is governed by rational and irrational norms. The notion essence of «political person» and characteristic aspects of the meaning formation are studied. Human participation in political affairs of the ancient Greece and ancient Rome states is described separately. Various interpretations of the concept of political person are presented. Much attention is paid to the anthropocentric world view of Aristotle, especially his concept of man as a «political animal». The key role of the state in the process of the formation of a political person that became the main actor of the political arena of the polis life is emphasized. It is shown that outside of the family unit there is political space, which is formed with the «spirit» of liberty and publicity. The article researches in details the peculiarities of democratic form of government of the ancient Greece as well as reveals the advantages and disadvantages of the purposive involvement of the citizens into political life. It is stated that such political process on one side formed an active political actor and on the other – political career of the Athenian citizen took all of his life space. The reasons and process of the state building concentrating on the social part of human nature are studied and analyzed. The main features of anthropocentric conception of the ancient thinkers are studied; the key criteria for distinction of an animal and a human being are highlighted. The article defines and analyzes three main characteristic features that distinguish a human being from living creatures: sociality, intellect and language. The influence of the latter on the development of the state as an «institutional reality» built with words and symbols is proved. The article emphasizes the considerable significance of the communication and political discourse as crucial characteristics of a citizen that determine his political activity. The language is viewed as an art of relations and inseparable method of nonviolent political actions. In modern politological discourse there formed a tendency to define Athenian democracy as «the most conversable» state form. «Language» and «action» as two forms with political status are described separately. The article formulates synthetic definition of the concept of political person, considering the peculiarities of human essence interpretation in ancient discourse. The factors directly or indirectly influencing the definition of the notion «political person» has been described. It is emphasized that the interpretation of the essence of the human of the ancient times is based upon the definition of a person as a social, governmental and political being. In the process of the research it is defined that the notion of «political person» is a complex conceptual model that is formed with such essential features as «socializing person», «ideal citizen», «personality of law», «friendly being».

Terror management theory (TMT), political discourse, media impact
Opis:
Anxiety is one of the most fundamental social phenomena nowadays. It has important impact on our societies, especially after the terrorist attack of 11/9/2001. It shapes social processes and plays a vital role in political activity. It has also become significant as an object of scientific research. Among many research perspectives that take into account different causes and consequences of anxiety existence in social processes, Terror management theory (TMT) is especially inspiring and promising. According to TMT, human beings are aware of the inevitability of death and that leads them to feel an overwhelming terror. It is managed by the maintenance of cultural worldviews and high self-esteem which allows to return to psychological equanimity. Some attitudes arise when terror appears, for example: high nationalism, high conformism and acceptance for charismatic leaders. This paper considers the possibility of applying TMT in research on Polish political discourse after Smoleńsk plane crash of 10/04/2010. The constant exposition of mortality in the Polish media after the tragic flight in which 96 well known politicians and social leaders, including the President Lech Kaczyński died, should lead to reveal the mechanism described by TMT.

Opis:
The political discourse is a complex linguistic phenomenon which attracts attention of many scientists from different fields, which shows its interdisciplinary character. The inaugural speech of president elect is one of the most important genres of political discourse. The tradition of this genre was formed many years ago in the United States of America. It is a relatively new for Russia, but a very important genre of Russian political discourse. Thanks to intention of the speech (unification of nation), its emotional saturation, conformity of its content and citizens’ expectations the inaugural speech is an effective instrument of political activity. The material for the research was Russian Presidents’ speeches (president Putin: 2000, 2004, 2012, President Medvedev: 2008). This work is devoted to the analysis of their features: a composition, a subject–matter, lexical features, functions of the speech and their realization.

The aim of the paper is to implement a new and so far unfamiliar theoretical perspective into Polish communication science. Although the functional theory of political discourse discussed here originated on the ground of American empiricism, it aspires to be perceived as an international theory which may be successfully applied in analyses of political messages in various countries. Thus, the authors of presented paper aim not only at transporting onto Polish humanities premises and theoretical presumptions but also at verifying their adequacy in Polish political stage based on com- parative analysis obtained from research performed by American and Israel scholars.

This paper, drawing on insights from discourse-historical approach to discourse analysis and applying Conceptual Metaphor theory, examines selected BUILDING metaphors of the welfare state in a corpus of four British newspapers. The paper compares the use of these metaphors in the four newspapers and considers their argumentative function, finding that while the metaphors largely overlap between the newspapers, their argumentative functions are more though not completely distinct, legitimising government reforms of the welfare state in the conservative newspapers, with the left-leaning newspapers using them to support and oppose these reforms.

This article is devoted to the notion of expert rationality, understood as one of the central epistemic regimes of the discourse of the European Union. Expert rationality is instrumenlal to the legitimization of EU directivity and control of centrally designed political, economic, and sociál Solutions for an integrating Europę. From a philological perspective, however, it is worth investigaling how expert rationality tends to be textually realized. Therefore, this article discusses the stylistic properties of the genre of the directive based on Directive 98/79/EC of 27 October 27 1998 on in vitro diagnostic medical devices. The analysis focuses on the identification of such stylistic resources and the strategie applications that underpin the ideology of expert rationality.

The aim of the article is to show how the use of lexeme dignity can affect the acquisition and maintenance of the electorate by a political party. On the example of selected statements by ex-Prime Minister Beata Szydlo from 2015–2018, the author analyzes various contexts of use of token dignity, for example: economic, social, historical, showing that they had a specific context and an explicit, distinctive system of values that should be taken by the recipient. At the same time, through the use of the lexeme, Beata Szydlo denied the political opponent, creating in the eyes of the electorate their negative image. The ex-Prime Minister presented herself as an authority, which on the one hand decides who should be given dignity, and who should take it.

Opis:
As part of a diplomatic tour to the United States in 2012, now ex-president of Argentina Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, gave a series of speeches at various institutions of higher learning. The Argentinean press covering the President’s visits coded their analysis following a melodramatic code reminiscent of popular serialized programming known in Latin America as telenovelas (Soap operas in the Anglo-American media context). Conservative and right leaning media outlets used the telenovela formula to construct Kirchner as a villain, due to her promotion of a populist participatory democracy in opposition to neoliberal economic policies. Journalists followed the Kirchner tour closely, and each of her visits were framed as episodes full of the genre’s markers with clearly delineated cliff-hangers, explosive revelations, and competing dichotomous characters. In order to understand the uses of melodramatic paradigm, I am proposing a close reading of the staging, performance and the speeches Kirchner held at Harvard University. I argue in this article that Kirchner employs the code of melodrama to speak to her constituents, but it is also her adversaries which frame a condemnation of the President using similarly structured telenovela paradigm. I am interested in addressing how the telenovela/ melodramatic code is appropriated by both opposing political sides and the implications this has on the television genre as a purveyor of political discourse.
