This work is also an attempt to show the contribution of Polish snow-related research to the international achievements in this fields.

The article presents a synthetic summary of the state of research on the Łódź ghetto. The author focuses on research by Polish and German scholars. The paper presents edited source texts, such as newspapers or reportages, one of the most important documents of the Holocaust literature, namely the “Chronicle of the Łódź Ghetto / Litzmannstadt Getto”, as well as studies on various phenomena in the ghetto, such as culture and literature, daily life, or deportation of Jews from various German cities to the Łódź ghetto. The article also mentions the current works on subsequent editions.

The quality of life is an interdisciplinary issue. Hence, in Polish social sciences there are many different definitions for this term, which has its consequences in research. Nowadays, the topic of life quality is being analyzed through its objective and subjective indexes. The article presents results of various research on mass media usage in the context of spending free time and using modern information and communication technologies (ICT), since both these trends have dominated the field of analyzing objective and subjective dimension of life quality of Poles when it comes to using media. Unfortunately, using mass media is not regarded in research as one of the main indexes for life quality and its full utilization requires a correction of meaning and methodology.

Artykuł przedstawia w skrócie najważniejsze fakty z historii polskich badań i odkryć naukowych w Arktyce i Antarktyce od XIX stulecia do chwili obecnej. Autor jest geologiem, od 1956 roku badaczem polarnym, prowadził badania naukowe i zorganizował 23 wyprawy polarne na Spitsbergen, Grenlandię i do Antarktyki, przez wiele lat był przewodniczącym Komitetu Badań Polarnych przy Prezydium Polskiej Akademii Nauk. Obecnie jest jego honorowym przewodniczącym.
The article describes Polish research and discoveries in the Arctic and the Antarctic since the 19th century. The author is a geologist and since 1956 has been engaged in scientific field research on Spitsbergen, Greenland and Antarctica (23 expeditions). For many years chairman of the Committee on Polar Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences, he is now its Honorary Chairman.

Tematem artykułu są zbiory archiwalne Kanadyjsko-Polskiego Instytutu Badawczego w Toronto, który jest jedną z niewielu organizacji stworzonych przez Polonię kanadyjską dysponujących archiwum, wydawnictwem oraz biblioteką. Celem niniejszego tekstu jest scharakteryzowanie poloników będących w posiadaniu Instytutu oraz przedstawienie technik gromadzenia i udostępniania zbiorów. Opisowi poddano różne grupy jednostek archiwalnych: zbiory mikrofilmów, skany gazet polonijnych, pamfletów i druków ulotnych, a także publikacje książkowe o tematyce związanej z polską grupą etniczną w Kanadzie: pamiętniki imigrantów, biografie i autobiografie, monografie i rejestry. Zbiory te – częściowo dostępne w wersji zdigitalizowanej – zostały rozpoznane i docenione przez nielicznych badaczy, głównie historyków i socjologów. Autorka artykułu postuluje, by stały się one przedmiotem bardziej systematycznej niż dotąd interdyscyplinarnej eksploracji naukowej.
Joanna Lustański’s article is concerned with the archives of the Canadian Polish Research Institute in Toronto, one of the few organizations established by the Polish ethnic group in Canada that possesses archives, a publishing house, and library. Her aim is to describe the polonica owned by the institute, and to present the techniques of gathering and sharing the collections. She describes various groups and types of archival records: microfilm collections, scans of Polish diaspora newspapers, pamphlets and leaflets, as well as books on topics related to the Polish ethnic group in Canada, immigrant memoirs, biographies and autobiographies, monographs and registers. Now partially available in a digitized version, the collections have been known and appreciated by a small group of researchers, mainly historians and sociologists. Lustański suggests that the polonica should become a subject of interdisciplinary research exploration to a much greater degree than previously.

Przedmiotem artykułu jest kwestia traktatu svalbardzkiego i polskiego udziału w tej międzynarodowej umowie. Podpisany w 1920 r. traktat nie przewidywał wielu nowych wyzwań, z którymi boryka się współczesny świat zarówno od strony praktycznej, jak i prawnej. Polska stała sygnatariuszem traktatu Ssvalbardzkiego w 1931. Aktywność naszego kraju sprowadza się na tym archipelagu wyłącznie do aspektu badawczego, czemu służy polska baza naukowa w Hornsundzie. Brak natomiast innych form zaangażowania, takich jak np. górnictwo. Możliwy byłby też większy rozwój takich form działalności jak turystyka.
The article discusses the question of the Svalbard Treaty and the Polish participation in this international agreement. The treaty that was signed in 1920 did not take into account numerous new challenges which are faced by the modern world, both as far as the practical and the legal aspects are concerned. Poland became a signatory of the Svalbard Treaty in 1931. The activity of our country on this archipelago is reduced exclusively to the research aspects, which are served by the Polish research base in Hornsund. However, there were no other forms of engagement, such as mining. There could also be greater opportunities for the development of such forms of activity as tourism.

Paper described geomorphological characteristics of landform sets which occur on research areas investigated by Polish geomorphologists on Spitsbergen. These area involve four areas along the western coast of Spitsbergen, i.e. vicinities of the Kaffiøyra, the Werenskioldbreen, the Calypsostranda, and the Hornsund, as wel as one area located in the central part of Spitsbergen, i.e. vicinity of Billefjord with special emphasis on surroundings of the Petuniabkukta. Landforms are characterized in different morphogenetic terms, mainly glacial, peryglacial, deundational, slope, fluvial, even eolian factors and processes.

The aim of this article is to present the possible relationship between the level of financing of R+D, the R+D personnel rate (particularly in the higher education sector) and the presence of Polish academic research in the world demonstrated by prestigious publications indexed in the Web of Science (WoS). The research findings concern the analysis of changes in time and show a clear, strong and positive correlation between the level of financing of research and development activity and the number of publications listed in the WoS. The received result indicates with a wellfitting regression model that there is a direct relationship between the expenditure on research and the presence of Polish scholars in the international science.

Prof. Ignacego Mościckiego. Dzisiejsze osiągnięcia IChP dowodzą ciągłości tradycji i wierności koncepcji twórczej służby przemysłowi chemicznemu i gospodarce narodowej.
An outline of the realization of its research mission, the training of specialized personnel for the chemical industry and planning of the economy, as well as publishing activity in the 100-year history of the Industrial Chemistry Research Institute, a successor of the Institute of Technical and Scientific Research Metan has been presented. The strategic goals set up by the founder and patron of the Institute – Professor Ignacy Mościcki, which include the invention of modern chemical technologies with the application of locally available raw materials in order to guarantee economic independence for Poland has been fulfilled consistently under the different organizational changes of the Institute: Institute of Technical and Scientific Research Metan, Chemical Research Institute, Main Chemical Institute and lastly the Prof. Ignacy Mościcki Industrial Chemistry Research Institute (ICRI). The present achievements of ICRI are proof of this continuing tradition and adherence to the concept of a creative service dedicated to the chemical industry and the national economy.

W artykule opisano poszukiwania, które przeprowadzono w latach 2014–2017 na polu bitwy pod Grunwaldem / Tennembergiem / Žalgirisem (1410) za pomocą wykrywaczy metalu. W lutym 2014 roku in Odense w Danii podpisano umowę na wspólne przedsięwzięcie pomiędzy Muzeum Bitwy pod Grunwaldem w Stębarku i Duńskim Towarzystwem Archeologicznym Harja. Zgodnie z tą umową Harja miała dostarczyć główną partię wykrywaczy metalu, które miały za zadanie zeskanować obszar wyznaczony przez Muzeum. Zasadniczym celem przedsięwzięcia było zlokalizowanie obszaru określnego jako Dolina Wielkiego Strumienia n a p ołudnie i wschód od wioski Stębark, która według Andrzeja Nadolskiego (1921–1993), polskiego archeologa i historyka, była uważana za najważniejsze miejsce bitwy pod Grunwaldem w 1410 roku; to tam zjednoczone siły polsko-litewskie starły się z Zakonem Krzyżackim. We wskazanym miejscu nie znaleziono jednak żadnych śladów pola bitwy. Przez następne 3 lata poszukiwania rozszerzano na inne obszary na południe i wschód od wioski Grunwald, tym razem ze znakomitym wynikiem. Obecnie nie ma wątpliwości, że główna bitwa odbyła się w obszarze położonym około 2–3 km na zachód od wspomnianej Doliny Wielkiego Strumienia. Zatem przez 180 lat historycy i archeolodzy wyznawali błędną teorię na temat dróg przemarszu wojsk i formowania się szyków bojowych; autorem tej błędnej teorii z 1836 roku był pruski historyk Johannes Voigt. Artykuł zawiera opis realizacji tego międzynarodowego przedsięwzięcia oraz opisuje jego wyniki.
SummaryThe paper describes the search for the field of the battle of Grunwald / Tannenberg / Žalgiris (1410) with metal detectors in the years 2014–2017. In February 2014, a joint project of the Grunwald Museum (Polish: Muzeum Bitwy pod Grunwaldem w Stębarku) and the Danish Archaeological Society Harja was agreed upon and signed in Odense, Denmark. According to the agreement, Harja was to provide the main group of metal detectorists that were to scan the areas chosen by the Museum. The main goal of the project was to try and locate the area named ‘Valley of the Great Stream’ (Dolina Wielkiego Strumień) to the south and east of the village of Stębark (German: Tannenberg), which, according to Andrzej Nadolski (1921–1993), a Polish archaeologist and historian, was supposed to be one of the most important places of the Battle of Grunwald in 1410, where the allied Polish-Lithuanian forces clashed with the Teutonic Knights in Prussia. However no battlefield was found in that area. For the next three years, the search was therefore extended to other fields to the south and east of the village of Grunwald (German: Grünfelde), that time with excellent results. There is now no doubt that the main battle took place in the area which is situated about 2–3 kilometers to the west of the ‘Valley of the Great Stream’. For 180 years historians and archaeologists have accepted a fallacious theory about the march routes and battlefield deployment of the armies, the theory created by the famous Prussian historian Johannes Voigt in 1836. The paper provides information about the successful international project and its findings.

W artykule przedstawiono w ogólnym zarysie historyczne dokonania polskiej historiografii dziejów regionu nordyckiego – począwszy od okresu międzywojennego po czasy współczesne. Powyższa problematyka mieści się w dwóch głównych nurtach polskich historycznych badań skandynawistycznych – podejmowania tematów wskazujących na polsko-nordyckie relacje we wszelkich zakresach, oraz skupianie się na dziejach Skandynawii i regionu nordyckiego. Trzecim nurtem, najsłabiej zaznaczonym, jest w sposób nowoczesny ujęta komparatystyka w odniesieniu do historii społecznej, dziejów państw i kultury. W minimalnym zakresie występuje w polskiej historiografii edycja źródeł do dziejów regionu nordyckiego. Artykuł stanowi jednocześnie przegląd aktywności głównych ośrodków badań skandynawistycznych w Polsce, zarówno pojedynczych badaczy-historyków funkcjonujących samodzielnie w poszczególnych uniwersytetach i wydziałach historycznych, jak i centrów polskiej skandynawistyki, zwłaszcza takich, które obejmują swymi badaniami studia nad całym regionem w ujęciu interdyscyplinarnym: nad językiem, literaturą, kulturą, polityką, gospodarką i historią. W artykule zwraca się także uwagę na słabości polskich badań nad dziejami regionu nordyckiego, co wynika przede wszystkim z wielu uwarunkowań, a także z niemożności wykorzystania oryginalnych zasobów archiwalnych i źródłowych.
The article outlines the achievements of the Polish historiography concerning the Nordic region, from the inter-war period to the present times. The problems dealt with are included in the two main trends of the Polish historical research concerning Scandinavian questions: the topics of Polish-Nordic relations of any kind, and the topics of the history of Scandinavia itself and of the Nordic region. The third trend, much weaker than the two others, comprises the comparative studies concerning the social history, the history of states and cultures. Still another trend, the edition of sources to the history of the Nordic region, is hardly to be found in Polish historiography.The article is also a review of the main centres of Scandinavian studies in Poland, both individual scholars, single historians functioning at departments of history at universities, and institutional centres of Polish Scandinavian Studies, especially the ones which carry out research into the whole region in an interdisciplinary approach: into languages, literature, culture, politics, economy and history. Some emphasis has been put on the weaknesses of the Polish research concerning the Nordic region, especially the ones resulting from the inability to use original archival materials and sources.

The paper presents the relations of Jaroslav Valenta (1930–2004), a prominent Czech researcher of the most recent Polish history, with a number of Polish historians. The picture of these complex relations in the years 1965–1996 has been built up the basis on archival sources.

Prywatyzacja i inwestycje zagraniczne zmieniły rynek działania polskich instytutów badawczych, Instytuty te znalazły się w warunkach ekonomicznej i telekomunikacyjnej globalizacji. Nowa rzeczywistość wymaga nowego opisu, który w dużym stopniu zawiera misja instytutu. Wpracy opisano jak zainteresowani radzą sobie z tym wyzwaniem.
Privatization and foreign investments have changed the market activities of Polish research institutes. These research institutes found themselves in conditions of economic and telecommunication globalization. A new reality requires a new description, which to a large extent includes a mission of the institute. This paper describes how the concerned ones cope with this challenge.
