Opis:
Mariusz Grygianiec has criticized the so called "proofs of nonexistence of general objects" as based on a wrong definition. In this paper one of his arguments is shown to depend on an unsatisfiable condition (contradictory to some basic ontological intuitions) without which, however, it is inconclusive as a reductio ad absurdum. Furthermore, it is suggested that even if the argument was sound, it could by no means be counted - contrary to the Author's intention - as a counterargument to Stanisław Leśniewski and Tadeusz Kotarbiński.

Different Jewish thinkers were interested in Jesus since antiquity. But until the modern times they had spoken about him very little and rather negatively. In the sixteenth century a new stage of this interest appeared because several Jews began to look at Jesus with widely opened eyes. They were ready to know critically Jesus on the basis of Christian sources. This paper presents view of Solomon ibn Verga, Abraham Farissol, Jehuda Karmi, Leo Modena, Baruch Spinoza and Jacob Emden. In this way they showed that a profound communication should precede any formal dialogue between Judaism and Christianity.

Corporate social responsibility is becoming more and more popular all over the world. It is promoted by governments and transnational organizations. Nevertheless, since its establishment, it has gained a large group of enemies and still meets with a wave of criticism from different sides, beggining from economists, standing on the position that the purpose of business is only to generate income, through philosophers, who see in CSR a new tool for social enslavement, ending at sociologists, who see an element of corporate management and modern control technology in it. The article presents the most important arguments against corporate social responsibility. It also engages in a polemic against opponents of this concept. However, the starting point is the theory of stakeholders, considered by many as the framework of CSR.

The article offers a reconstruction of the text-based fight between Adolf Nowaczyński and Antoni Słonimski. It was not, as it is argued here, only a contest of styles and temperaments – though this exchange proved one of the most impressive, powerful, and dramatic polemics of that time in terms of articulation. However, it stemmed from a long history of tumultuous contacts which offered an amplified view of the problems of identity (Jewishness), politics, and community. A comprehensive view of the combat between Nowaczyński and Słonimski requires both an analysis of the rhetorics of the texts and an investigation into the context and dynamics of publication.

The article shows the names of the sacrament of confi rmation used in Piotr Skarga’s sermons. The analyzed material has been taken from Kazania o śiedmi Sákrámentách, published in 1600 in Kraków by Andrzej Piotrkowczyk publishinh house, whereas the comparative material has originated from Słownik polszczyzny XVI wieku and other publications about religious language, which are enumerated in the bibliography. The analysis of the materials shows that Skarga has not created new names for the sacrament of confirmation. They have the same forms as in the Bible or in the papers of Church Fathers, namely confi rmation, sacrament of confi rmation.

This article analyses the reasons why Descartes refused to enter into a polemic with Gassendi after the publication of his new objections to Meditations. It argues that Descartes’ irritation was justified because the sensualist limitations of Gassendi’s position made him unable to understand the issues which constituted an important novelty in Descartes’ philosophy. For his part, Descartes is likely to have suspected that Gassendi was not even trying to understand the essence of his philosophy.

Tadeusz Kudliński remained in the memory of Cracovians, above all, as a theatre critic and the author of books dedicated to this topic, which have been republished many times. Serving the function of an educational mission, they combined a harmonious perspective of a historian, researcher, critic, polemicist and apologist, who was also a great story-teller. The role of a ‘theatre man’, which he assumed, also included contacts with amateur theatre, discussions with audience and cooperation with the Theatre Lovers Club. Views on art which had clashed in the preceding century, were clearly reflected in the monographs and collections of reviews written by the author, for whom the history of the theatre was, in fact, the history of drama. For years, Kudliński consistently carried out his ‘theatre lesson’. It revolved around numerous issues – from the description of various theatrical aesthetics, through the search for ‘a Polish style’ of performance, to the characterisation of experimental groups (e.g. Grotowski’s or student theatre). The critic placed experiment on the side of cultural life, on no account in the popular theatre, therefore, he criticised all Polish directors from the second half of the 20th century who staged ‘experimentally’, especially classics. Being a traditionalist and a supporter of theatrical illusion, he attacked Brecht’s model of epic performance, glorifying ”the process of actor transformation”, although he emphasised that it doesn’t have to ”concern only reality.” He provoked, irritated – and taught, which can be confirmed by the fact that his books about theatre are still widely read nowadays.

In the presented polemical article I discuss the paper by Izabela Wagner (Selektywna analiza problemu publikacji humanistów i przedstawicieli nauk społecznych w języku angielskim [Analysis of the problem regarding publishing the scientific articles written in English in humanities and social sciences by scholars originated and educated in non-English speaking countries], „Przegląd Socjologii Jakościowej”, 2012, t. 8, nr 1, s. 166–187). One of the main issues of her polemic was the process of articles’ review in the scientific international journals. On the basis of her single experience with an American journal, Wagner presents a very negative view on this process. However, neither the author of the presented polemic, nor other known to him Polish scientist who have published articles in the international journals in the area of social sciences have encountered problems described by Wagner. In my opinion, such information is very important for the readers of PSJ, since subjective and pejorative presentation of the reviewing process might cause prejudices towards publishing articles in the international journals among the Polish scientists. Additionally, I described in detail the process of assignment of points to the international journals by the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education (the knowledge of which might help to avoid important misunderstandings). Moreover, I presented the possible ways of dealing with unethical editor’s behavior described by Wagner and analyzed her advices on publishing strategies and international career.

An article Journalism – an occupation or profession shows the polemic about the problem whether to qualify journalism as profession. Author points the reasons for and against treating journalism as the profession. The author is especially focuses on the role and social mission associated with journal- ists. The first parts of the article concern the range of definitions of journal- ism as well as the areas and phases of its development. The following parts define the terms of occupation and profession and are the attempt to qualify journalism to one of those categories. Basing on the analysis of the literature, author claims that journalism do not fulfill the criteria to be qualified as profession. Author analyses the matter in order to show the society and the journalists environment, what actions should be undertaken to make the rank of journalism higher and make it more professional.

L’objectif de cette contribution est d’analyser le fonctionnement argumentatif de la formule (au sens de Krieg-Planque 2003, 2009) dobra zmiana (‘bon changement’) dans l’espace public polonais. Après avoir dégagé le potentiel argumentatif du slogan de campagne qu’elle était à l’origine et à l’aide duquel le parti Prawo i Sprawiedliwość (Droit et Justice) est arrivé au pouvoir en Pologne en 2015, nous analysons les stratégies argumentatives dans le discours des opposants au parti au pouvoir (politiques et journalistes anti-gouvernementaux). La formule dobra zmiana est mobilisée dans ce discours afin de disqualifier le parti gouvernant soit de manière déclarée soit de manière voilée, ce qui se fait grâce à trois démarches : reprise sans altérations formelles, reprise avec défigement et évitement.
The aim of this article is to analyse the argumentative functioning of the formula (in the sense of Krieg-Planque 2003, 2009) dobra zmiana (‘good change’) in the Polish public space. After identifying the argumentative potential of the campaign slogan, that it was in the origin and with which the political party Prawo i Sprawiedliwość (Law and Justice) came to power in Poland in 2015, we analyse the argumentative strategies in the discourse of the opponents of the ruling party (politicians and anti-government journalists). The formula dobra zmiana is used in this discourse in order to disqualify the ruling party in a declared way or in a veiled way, which is done in three ways: adoption without formal alterations, adoption with défigement and avoidance.

This article tries to find the answers to the following questions: Can one find, in the Rabbinic writings (the Tosefta, Jerusalem Talmud and Babylonian Talmud), some texts that refer to Jesus and His followers? What is their nature? Do they include anti-Christian undertones and constitute a specific Rabbinic anti-gospel: the rabbis’ well-thought and thorough reaction to the content included in the Gospels? The author in his answers used the detailed research presented in his latest monograph entitled Jesus and His Followers in the Talmud. A Textological, Historical and Sociological Analysis, Lublin 2013. His investigation leads him to the conclusion that in Talmudic narratives Rabbis created a specific anti-gospel which was initially transmitted verbally and then written down in various contexts of their works. The aim of this anti-gospel is to challenge the authority of Jesus of Nazareth as the Son of God and the Messiah from the house of David. Rabbinic narratives wish to show in a clear way that Jesus must not usurp any messianic and divine prerogatives. In the earlier times rabbis warned Jewish community against magic power and the attractiveness of the doctrine advocated by heretics. Subsequent rabbis showed the weakness and stupidity of heretical teaching, whose contradictions and lack of logic were easy to disprove by making use of proper argumentation. Jewish sages wished to prove the superiority of the Rabbinic doctrine and the biblical presentation they offered, over the Christian faith.

The aim of this paper is to show how a 16th-century Catholic clergyman would polemicize in the matter of religion with a Lutheran, whom he tried to convince to abandon erroneous (in his opinion) teachings. The Qur’ān was never translated into Church Slavic in its entirety; still, in the writings of some mediaeval Christian authors (Byzantine and Latin) quite extensive quotations and borrowings from it can be found. Many of these texts were transmitted in the Slavia Orthodoxa area. The aim of this article is to present the Church Slavic literary sources which contain quotations from the Qur’ān. The analysis covers Slavic translations of Byzantine and Latin authors as well as original texts of Slavic provenance. The main conclusion of the research is that only ca. 2% of the text of the Qur’ān has been preserved in the Church Slavic material.

Jedną z widocznych cech Ewangelii według św. Jana jest jej „potencjał polemiczny”. Wiele zdań Janowego Jezusa wobec Jego rozmówców (Żydów) ma ostry i polemiczny charakter. W niniejszym artykule autor pragnie wskazać na źródła Janowego konfliktu i polemiki w szerszym kontekście literatury judaistycznej (Izajasz, Targum Izajasza) i chrześcijańskiej (Pierwszy List św. Jana, List do Galatów). Analiza ta umożliwia wydobycie „paradygmatu polemicznego”, który mógł być wykorzystany przez autora czwartej Ewangelii i zaaplikowany do sytuacji końca I w., kiedy szczególnie żywotnym było pytanie o tożsamość „prawdziwego Izraela” w odniesieniu do ojcostwa wobec Boga i Abrahama.

The first part of the article contains a polemic with some of the theses proposed by Maciej Parkitny in his article, "To nie wino zawiniło". “Spór rymotwórski” Krasickiego z Naruszewiczem (It Is Not the Wine’s Fault. "Spór rymotwórski" [A Rhyme-forming Dispute] of Krasicki and Naruszewicz). The issue is the depreciation of Tadeusz Mikulski’s statements about the "Dispute..." and the perception of Ignacy Krasicki’s and Adam Naruszewicz’s works as expressions of different views on the political system of the First Polish Republic. At the end of the article, there is a list of particular differences between the two bishops and writers on several levels.

The article is an attempt to describe the dispute in the theory of literature, as exemplified by a polemic between Professor Jakub Z. Lichański and Professor Michał Rusinek. The public dispute of these scholars was mainly conducted in the issues of some major Polish humanities periodicals at the beginning of the first decade of the 21st century and concerned the perception of rhetoric, which Prof. Lichański understands in a traditional but at the same time modern way, while prof. Rusinek applies conceptually sophisticated categories of postmodernity. Surprisingly, the method of describing this polemic is offered by classical rhetoric itself, which integrates textual, communicative and contextual aspects of each statement, demonstrating its persuasive, i.e.: cognitive, educational and aesthetic functions. Even in the case of a scientific dissertation, particularly, a polemical one.
W artykule podjęta została próba opisania sporu w teorii (literatury) na przykładzie polemiki Panów Profesorów Jakuba Z. Lichańskiego i Michała Rusinka. Publiczna dyskusja tych uczonych prowadzona była głównie na łamach najważniejszych periodyków polskiej humanistyki w początkach pierwszej dekady XXI wieku, a dotyczyła sposobu rozumienia retoryki, którą prof. Lichański pojmuje tradycyjnie, choć zarazem nowocześnie, natomiast prof. Rusinek ujmuje retorykę w wymyślnych kategoriach ponowoczesności. Metodę opisu tego sporu przewrotnie oferuje sama retoryka (klasyczna), która integruje tekstowy, komunikacyjny i kontekstowy aspekt każdej wypowiedzi, ukazując jej perswazyjną, czyli poznawczą, wychowawczą i estetyczną, funkcję. Nawet publikacji naukowej, zwłaszcza polemicznej.

The aim of the paper was the analysis of the scientific disputes published in ”Pamiętnik Literacki” in the “Dyskusje – Korespondencja” section, and previously ”Polemika”, ”Dyskusje i Polemiki”, and ”Korespondencja”, from 1902 till 2008. The author of the paper has formulated the idea of the peripheral frame which describes the type of argumentation of a peripheral character which, nonetheless, introduces essential arguments into a discussion. While analysing the disputes published in ”Pamiętnik Literacki” the author of the paper has observed some repeated elements of the refutation frame which have a peripheral character, surrounding the subject and modulating the statement’s persuasion-ability. The frame elements can also be found in the sphere of inventive, thematic and disposable topos related to the composition limits. Among their most important mutual points (loci communes) there are: concern of the reader (argumentation like ad auditores), meta-polemic remarks, adminicula, or, in other words, reference to a dispute circumstances, causa scribendi, or refutation reasons, an opponent’s evaluation, or a group of arguments ad hominem.
Les textes des polémiques scientifiques incluses dans « Pamiętnik Literacki » dans la partie « Dyskusje – Korespondencja » , et auparavant « Polemika » , « Dyskusje i Polemiki » , « Korespondencja » , de 1902 à 2008, étaient l’objet de l’analyse. L’auteure a formulé la notion de cadre périphérique qui représente le type d’argumentation à caractère non essentiel, mais introduisant dans une discussion des arguments essentiels. À la suite des études sur les textes des polémiques publiées dans « Pamiętnik Literacki » , on peut repérer des éléments récurrents du cadre réfutatif à caractère périphérique qui entourent l’argumentation pertinente et qui modulent le caractère persuasif d’un discours. Les éléments paratextuels sont également repérables dans la topique inventive, thématique et dispositive liée aux seuils de composition d’un texte donné. Parmi les lieux communs (loci communes) les plus importants des polémiques scientifiques qui sont apparues dans « Pamiętnik Literacki » se trouvent : le soin porté au lecteur (argumentation ad auditores) ; les remarques métapolémiques ; adminicula, c’est-à-dire la référence aux circonstances d’une discussion ; causa scribendi, c’est-àdire les causes d’une réfutation ; l’appréciation d’un adversaire, c’est-à-dire un groupe d’arguments ad hominem.

The article is devoted to the linguistic analysis of the polemics conducted in the press by Józef Kostrzewski and Bolko von Richthofen in the interwar period. The scientific subject – the ethnogenesis of the Slavs – turned into a sharp political polemic. The set of analysed texts is an example of a discourse – a tangle of texts, thematically related, standing with each other and with the discourse in a complex relationship. The texts refer to each other through numerous quotations, paraphrases, references in the text and footnotes. Their analysis provided information about the image of us – Poles (Slavs) vs. they – Germans (Germani), we – Polish scientists vs. they – German researchers existing then, as well as information on language strategies used to create a specific image of oneself and the opponent. Since the controversy was conducted in public, it also affected the public perception of the discussed issue, while the socio-historical reality of the time also had an impact on the course of the debate. The closer the Second World War approached, the more heated the dispute became, and the more scientists moved away from the scientific problem and entered into sharp political polemics.

W niniejszym artykule termin „Żydzi” zostaje ukazany jako klucz interpretacyjny do głębszego zrozumienia historii i teologii Ewangelii Janowej. Najpierw autor dokonuje analizy terminu „Żydzi” w szerszym kontekście źródeł żydowskich (Stary Testament, teksty qumrańskie, literatura rabiniczna, Józef Flawiusz, Filon z Aleksandrii) i chrześcijańskich (Nowy Testament, literatura patrystyczna). Następnie zostaje ukazana specyfika terminu „Żydzi”, występującego 72 razy na kartach czwartej Ewangelii. Autor wyodrębnia różne znaczenia tego terminu (regionalne, ogólne, etniczne i religijne), a szczególnie zainteresowany jest negatywnym użyciem terminu „Żydzi” w 37 tekstach Janowych. Łącząc metody diachroniczne i synchroniczne w podejściu do tego terminu, autor stara się odpowiedzieć na pytania, kim są „Żydzi” Janowi oraz jaką funkcję spełniają oni w narracji Janowej. Analizowany termin jest interpretowany w aspekcie historycznym, socjologicznym, symbolicznym, narratywnym i psychologicznym. Na podstawie przeprowadzonej analizy tego terminu autor ukazuje jego znaczenie dla lepszego zrozumienia kontekstu historycznego i teologicznego Ewangelii Janowej.
In the present article the term “Jews” is shown as the interpretative key for the better understanding of history and theology of the Gospel of John. First the author makes analysis of the term “Jews” in the wider context of Jewish sources (Old Testament, Qumran texts, rabbinic literature, Josephus Flavius and Philon of Alexandria) and Christian sources (New Testament, patristic literature). Then the author describes the specific meaning of the term “Jews” which occurs 72 times in the Fourth Gospel. He distinguishes various meanings if this term (regional, general, ethnic and religious). He is especially interested in the negative use of this term in 37 texts of the Gospel of John. Connecting diachronical and synchronical methods in the interpretation of the term “Jews” he tries to answer on the questions: who are the Johannine “Jews”? and how is the function of the term “Jews” in the narrative of John? He makes analysis in historical, sociological, symbolical, narrative and psychological interpretation. On the basis of wide analysis of the Johannine “Jews” the author shows its important meaning for better understanding of historical and theological context of the Fourth Gospel.

This paper discusses the seventeenth-century Rozmowa białocerkiewska that has not been interpreted from the language perspective. The author presents the discrepancies that are current in technical literature and concern dates and ascription of the text to a publishing house, once there is consent as to the text’s authorship. Principally, however, she focuses on structural and linguistic analysis of the text, which is a document of the polemic that took place between the Catholic clergymen, A. Piekarski and M. Prażmowski, and the Orthodox priest J. Galatowski. The mechanisms of constructing one’s position, i.e. quotations, replicas, addresses to an adversary, show far-fetched differences between them, while the tone of the polemic was retained. The differences found here together with doubts as to the accordance between print and historical discussion give rise to two basic questions: who is the author of the text and how far the intervention in the shorthand notes went.

In this polemic essay I critically engage with the migration-modernisation argument presented by Marek Okólski in his article “Modernising Impacts of Emigration” published in “Studia Socjologiczne”, issue 3, volume 206. By employing postcolonial and decolonial theory I offer an alternative voice in the discussion on theorising migration. The polemic attempts to question the prevailing thinking on the migratory situation in Poland (patterns of immigration and emigration) anchored in the rhetoric of modernity and, by doing so, provoke further discussion on theorising and researching migration in Poland.
W niniejszym eseju polemicznym pragnę krytycznie odnieść się do tezy migracji-modernizacji, która została przedstawiona w artykule Marka Okólskiego „Modernising Impacts of Emigration” opublikowanym w „Studiach Socjologicznych”, numer 3, tom 206. Moja wypowiedź opiera się na perspektywie studiów postkolnialnych i dekolonialnych oraz stanowi alternatywny głos w dyskusji dotyczącej konceptualizacji migracji. W polemice pragnę zakwestionować dominujące myślenie o procesach migracyjnych w Polsce (wzorach emigracji i imigracji), które osadzone jest w retoryce modernizacyjnej, tym samym, pragnę sprowokować dalszą dyskusję na temat stosowanych podejść teoretycznych i empirycznych w badaniach migracyjnych w Polsce.

The article is the analysis of the place of Kazimiera Iłłakowiczówna in contemporary literary discourse. The author of the article claims – using Pierre Bayard’s theory – that the poetess is known “more or less”: she is remembered as someone who got prizes and recognition but at the same time she is impossible to read nowadays. There is political ambiguity and antiquity in her texts that keep her in the past. Marzec points at four areas of literary studies, where Iłłakowiczówna is still present: 1. Poetics: Iłłakowiczówna uses an original and unusual type of the Polish tonic verse. The author of this article analyses it using tools of psychoanalysis. 2. Religious discourse: Iłłakowicz.wna is interpreted as the author of religious poetry but Marzec argues with such interpretations. 3. Post-dependence studies: Iłłakowiczówna has not been analysed in terms of post-dependence studies yet but she is mentioned in the Polish borderlines discourse. 4. Feminist literary criticism: Iłłakowiczówna used to be studied as the author of androgynous poetry, but Marzec points out other motifs such as miscarriage, infanticide or problems of the new woman, like work at government institution, contestation of vitalism and bureaucracy. The aimof this article is to show that writing of Kazimiera Iłłakowiczówna needs to be read in terms of the history of literature which is devoid of evaluation and judging. Such analysis means going back in terms of modern literary studies which have undergone multiple turns that changed the tools accessible to contemporary critics.

The first part of the article is a polemic with the Polish version of postcolonialism, which adopted the name post-dependence. The author criticizes mimicking the romantic code, abstractness, operating essentialist oppositions which, in the modern meaning of culture processes, are regarded as anachronistic. The second part discusses the works of Mariusz Wilk, who is a voluntary immigrant in Russia, and his writing is treated as a model of sovereign reflection.
