Opis:
In the present article I discuss the remarkable fact that many of the motifs to be found in Seneca’s tragedies – such as a horrible death, a madman, an obsession or some supernatural agent – are also to be found in abundance in the work of “Gothic” authors such as Ann Radcliffe and Edgar Allan Poe. Indeed, these motifs are now commonly considered to be the hallmark of the Gothic genre. I also analyse some of the techniques which Seneca uses in order to arouse fear and stimulate the reader’s imagination, comparing them with those used by Poe and other Gothic writers.

Opis:
Artykuł podnosi wagę wewnętrznych psychologicznych mechanizmów związanych uwarunkowaniami stymulowania i podtrzymywania procesów POE w organizacji. Wspólne uznawane wartości korespondujące z wykonywanymi zadaniami, dostrzegany sens pracy i akceptacja kultury organizacyjnej firmy – mają tu krytyczne znaczenie. Odniesienia te winny znaleźć miejsce we wzajemnym oddziaływaniu i budowaniu więzi pomiędzy pracownikami, wzroście poczucia integracji i identyfikacji z organizacją, jej strategią i misją.
The article deals with POE in the context of the stimulation and modeling of employee engagement. The issue has not been fully investigated yet, although, POE stimulation and modeling in organizations is an indispensable management process in present days. It has an impact on work efficiency, work quality and innovativeness, which is an important current issue. The paper emphasizes the significance of internal psychological mechanisms that are related to the conditions of stimulating and maintaining POE processes. Shared values that correspond to the tasks, the awareness of the sense of work and the acceptance of the organizational culture of a company are of key importance here. They should be present in the creation of attachment among employees, their feelings of integration and identification with the organization, its strategy and mission.

Opis:
Rethinking conditions of revolutionary potential of literature, with special regard to ways literature incessantly has re-examined otherness in language, in this paper we have chosen to focus on specific mechanism of illusion-making, i.e. anamorphosis taken both as a technique and a theme. Since one of the most famous elaboration of anamorphosis in literature is to be found in Poe’s stories, it is worthwhile to examine how Poe’s game of hide and seek with depth and surface is reflected in his devoted Croatian reader and interpreter A.G. Matos. In a comparative analysis of Poe’s and Matos’s stories, we will elaborate on how a procedure of naming and a procedure of signifying are revealed to be mere effects of anamorphosis in Matos’s short story “Miš” (The Mouse). Since it is an embodiment of a figure designating schism and split, the rodent from the title of Matos’s short story reveals the other side of thinking, which is no other than the other within.

Opis:
The article is a comparative reading and analysis of selected works by two eminent authors of weird fiction, Stefan Grabiński and Howard Phillips Lovecraft, the goal of which is to trace two (independent) trajectories of development of ideas concerning “weird” story writing, as established, in pre-modern context, by Edgar Allan Poe. The two authors appear to suffer from a combination of tragically inherent inability to write “like” Poe, with a haunting desireto do so. Exhibiting understanding of the Poesque discourse, they are driven to invent strategies to cope with the resulting textual neuroses-a way out of the discursive “maze” of Poe’s craft, a way that is always already shut.Where Lovecraft’s “mechanistic materialism” finds its expression in an indifferent cosmos, populated by alien beings, whose influence seems to be inscribed in the fabric of his textual realities, Grabiński’s sense of “amazement” is deployed internally, with psychological constructs overshadowing the “objective” reality. Both discourses, however, spring from one tradition of horror, and from the unexorcised trace of Poe’s spectre. The two authors’ ambivalent relation with modern sensibilities results in a series of obsessive investigationsinto the ideological underpinnings of art, philosophy and science.

Opis:
This paper considers The Masque of the Red Death, a short story by E.A. Poe. Understanding the carnival as mundus inversus (temporary inversion of order) and using the theories proposed by M. Bakhtin or V. Turner, the authors present an interpretation according to which Poe’s ball is indeed an inversion of a ball – an anti-carnival. Furthermore, they do not agree with the allegorical understanding of Poe’s works. Indicating a suggestion made by Poe himself, they choose an interpretation related to Eliade’s concept of symbolism. They also disagree with the theory in which The Masque of the Red Death is the story about the non-existence of God. Referring to other religious interpretations and the problems of time, they present their own biblical conclusion.

Opis:
The article deals with E.A. Poe’s story The Murders in the Rue Morgue which centers on a mysterious murder case. Several acknowledged critical appreciations of the tale are presented and reevaluated. The paper endeavors to uncover inconsistencies in the traditional critical appro- aches as well as to unveil Poe’s sporadic literary incongruities embedded in the text. Stress is laid on the contrast between the traditional psychoanalytical readings of the story and the views of modern psychology and psychiatry. The article is intended to shed an alternative light on possible interpretations of the tale written by the 19th century pioneer in the field of the detective story and novel.

Opis:
Clarification is one of the textual phenomena enumerated by Antoine Berman as deforming tendencies in translation. It is best observable when the target text turns what was ambiguous in the original into more specific. This need to clarify the original often stems from systemic differences between languages. However, on numerous occasions the movement from the original ‘indefinite’ into the definite in the translation results from a subjective decision taken by the translator, who in fact has proper linguistic means at his disposal to retain the original level of indeterminacy. In the case of a literary work such a tendency may influence all its levels, especially the interpretative possibilities, as seen in two Polish translations of E.A. Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher, by Bolesław Leśmian and Stanisław Wyrzykowski. By discussing descriptions of the fictional space and the references to the Usher siblings, this article indicates to what extent clarifying lexical choices impact on the atmosphere of the work, consistency of the fictional world, suspense and the stance of the narrator.

Opis:
Edgar Allan Poe’s eerie short story “The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar” is a particularly noteworthy example of the sublime, a psychological state in which one is overwhelmed by the magnitude of that which is perceived by the mind. Valdemar exemplifies the sublime in that his death has somehow been suspended in time because he was under hypnosis as part of a medical experiment at the moment of his passing. However, the story also draws particular attention to the means by which insight into the nature of death is acquired by the hypnotist who narrates the story. For a more comprehensive understanding of the sublime experience, one may turn to the psychoanalytic theory of Jacques Lacan and the postmodernist work of Slavoj Žižek, which lead to the conclusion that the dramatic chain of events in “Valdemar” is an example of the sliding signifier, and, moreover, that the instability of the signifier may explain the sublime effect.
