Opis:
The Amharic language is the second most widely spoken Semitic language in the world, used by around 25 million speakers. Even though the Amharic language is successfully used in many domains, it still needs appropriate neologisms to give name to notions typical for Western European culture which increasingly influences not only the language but also the culture of Ethiopia. Even though loanwords from European languages were ubiquitous in Amharic for many decades, in recent years the lexicon of the extinct Geʿez lan-guage is partially used to coin a number of neologisms by means of metaphors or different juxtaposed parts of speech. In the beginning, the compounds in the form of the Amharic and Geʿez construct state (status constructus) are discussed; this is followed by an analysis of adjective-noun compounds, constructions with the nouns derived from verbs and verb and noun compounds. In the next part of the article the com-pounds with Geʿez prefixes are considered. The analysis of hybridised compounds and loan translations is the final point of the paper

The objective of this article is to discuss social varieties of Polish and Russian employed on the labels of wine bottles. The author aims to shed light on how sensory experiences in the domains of VISION, SMELL, TASTE, and TOUCH are recast into the text. This sociolect is characterized by its unique vocabulary and phraseology. The analysis indicates that labels on wine bottles consist of transparent semantic structures, on the one hand, and professional terminology used by sommeliers and wine stewards, as well as neologisms, on the other. This professional variety of the Polish and Russian ‘wine languages’ is extensive and internally diversified.

Opis:
The article is devoted to the semantic evolution of the word patchwork, which has become frequent in contemporary Polish. This appropriate borrowing from English was registered in Polish lexicography for the first time in 1995. In the twenty years since then, it showed its new meanings different from the original ‘artistic handicraft technique, consisting in stitching together pieces of material of different colours and shapes’, ‘composition resulting from the use of this technique’ and ‘product formed in this manner, for example bedspread, tapestry, clothes’. Nowadays, this lexeme can refer to any term referring to a particular or abstract designatum which ‘creates a coherent whole, but consists of various elements’ and also – as a derivatives of phraseology the patchwork family – means ‘a family founded by parents, at least one of whom has had a previous unsuccessful relationship or marriage involving their common children, their children from previous relationships, and sometimes also former partners and their relatives’.

More than 1,400 terms are covered; single-word terms, as well as open or closed two-element compounds (of the type biznes sekretarka or bg mama), some of them until now unattested to in studies or dictionaries. Author’s neologisms (so-called occasionalisms) are characteristic phenomena of the contemporary Bulgarian press. They are present in all components of the publishing text. Their purpose is to bring attractiveness in speech, voice the author’s point of view in an expressive way, characterize the  referent  and  attract  the  attention  of  the  reader. Author’s  neologisms  are  manifestations  of linguistic play and are based on the current literary word-formation rules. They are characterized by low frequency but high expressiveness. For this purpose, we use the creative possibilities of graphics, fonts, morphology, phonetics, semantic transposition.

Opis:
This paper deals with the word-formation of Mayakovsky’s neologisms, the principles of their composition and also the objects subjected to neologization. Attention is also paid to the Nachleben of these neologisms in contemporary Russian, based on the research into the Russian National Corpus. The paper is a result of the analysis of all Mayakovsky’s neologisms listed in A. Humesky’s book Majakovskij and His Neologisms (1964), except for those originated by the simple connection of two words or word components. The results were compared with the most recent work dealing with Mayakovsky’s neologisms, V. N. Valavin’s dictionary (Word-formation of Mayakovsky. An Attempt at a Dictionary of Occasiоnalisms). It is argued that the main word-formation principle is that of composition (substantives and adjectives) and suffixation (verbs), that even today many neologisms show surprising vitality, and also that not all of the neologisms ascribed to Mayakovsky are indeed his authorial creations.

Formative specifics of the German language creates particular conditions for forming neologisms and the related linguistic creativity. The degree to which neologisms are formed in contemporary German can be for instance easily observed upon the ‘Wortwarte’ project. Some of the neologisms considered as such by the authors of the ‘Wortwarte’ project shall be discussed in this article. The object of the linguistic analysis are neologisms from the world of politics. During analysis some interesting aspects referring to the form and specifics of contemporary neologisms have been pointed out i.e. word class presented by the analysed neologisms, their construction (i.e formative models upon which they have been formed), their components (i.e. native or foreign elements constituting them) as well as their semantics.

The translation of an artificial dialect in David Mitchell’s novel “Cloud Atlas” The purpose of the present study is an analysis of the techniques applied by the translators of David Mitchell’s novel “Cloud Atlas” into Polish, German, French, Spanish, and Portuguese while translating the artificial dialect used in the chapter “Sloosha’s Crossin’ an’ Ev’rythin’ After”. The plot of that chapter is set in a distant future, after the fall of humanity. The narrator is a goatherd whose dialect can be described, on the one hand, as simplified, partly distorted English and, on the other hand, as an exotic dialect which contains neologisms referring to fictional species, culture-specific terms, etc. Special attention is paid to the translation of neologisms as well as to the rendering of the original style. As the results show, the translators used a number of techniques, especially lexicalization, colloquialisation and rusticalisation, adapting the dialect as much as possible to the morphologies of the target languages in order to preserve the style of the chapter as well as to achieve the appropriate effect on the TL readers. In fact, as the dialect is artificial, the translators were able to approach it in a creative way, without the risk that the dialect would be associated with a particular geographic region.

Opis:
Chrzest ognia by Andrzej Sapkowski is a collection of short stories published in Poland in 1996; however, the first English edition, Baptism of Fire, was not published until 2014. The analyzed fragment abounds in nomenclature connected to the Slavic culture as well as neologisms. The uniqueness of the text results from Slavic character. One may observe that the main difficulty in the translation of such a culture-bound text is that Slavic literature is not popular worldwide; nonetheless, The Witcher Saga is a worldwide phenomenon, as it was placed on the New York Times bestseller list. It is worth noting that despite the fact that the way in which neologisms are coined in a fictional novel may differ from the coinage of words in the standard language, the word formation processes are similar to those applied in standard English or standard Polish. However, it should be noted that there is unknown what really enables a borrowing to catch on in another language.

The title nostalgia in Andrei Tarkovsky’s film is evoked by the Russian writer’s longing for his family and homeland. It is activated in his contact with another culture, in this case with Italian culture. This paper attempts to provide an analysis of the mechanisms used by the director to make a projection of this emotional state and to portray it in the film. A number of intersemiotic relations among visual, verbal and sound codes were analysed. The following relations were identified: complementarity, parallelism and contradiction. The provided examples show the significance of the visual code as an indicator of cultural otherness. They also prove the diversity of stylistic devices used for transposing emotional states to the physical world.

The article describes the new words that appeared in the Russian language public discourse. They are connected with three political events that caused a wide public outcry: the All-Russian vote on the approval of amendments to the Constitution of the Russian Federation, protests in support of Sergei Furgal, the detained governor of the Khabarovsk Krai, and the poisoning of opposition leader Alexei Navalny. The research material was collected from online media from January 2020 to September 2021. It includes neologisms, neosemantisms, and new phrases, many of which are occasional. In the collected material there are innovations formed according to standard derivational models and words and phrases representing the product of wordplay, including lexical blends. The considered innovations, being a manifestation of democratization and carnivalization of public communication, perform not only a nominative function. Due to their novelty, unusualness, and expressiveness, they have an evaluative potential. These innovations often become a linguistic means of speech aggression. In addition, they reflect the current social and political events of concern to the society and the attitude of the linguistic community to what is happening. The considered innovations, being a manifestation of democratization and carnivalization of public communication, perform not only a nominative function. Analysed lexical innovations reveal affinity to the group, which uses “its” language called by linguists youth slang, sociolekt, pupils or teenage lingo or pupils jargon. Examined formative neologisms reflect general development tendencies of the language – tendency for efficiency, which is realised in tendency for using acronims and tendency for creating expressive forms. The article emphasises that non oficial names are created not only for naming purposes but mainly pragmatic ones. In the thesis few reflections are shown which are linked to correctness of analysed secondary names, as there are doubts as to the correctness of their spelling and lexical-semantic cohesion.
