The research task of the essay is to answer the question of what is the face of the nation in the ethnic enclaves situated at the peripheries of national states. The subject of the analyses is the local population of the village Jaworzynka. In 1922, the settlement Herczawa was founded as a local unit independent from Jaworzynka. Since then Herczawa began to belong to Czechoslovakia. The state-owned status of Jaworzynka, which started to be a part of the Republic of Poland, was recognized after the World War I. The author takes into account the longue durre of folk and national culture generated in the Silesian Beskidy in the second half of the 18th century. The national culture is the main term applied to the investigations of the borderland regions. According to the ethno-symbolic approaches (Anthony D. Smith) and culturalism methods in sociology (Antonina Kłoskowska), the author analyses in his research: 1) language, 2) religion, 3) folkways and mores 4) arts, 5) local knowledge and literature. These elements delineate the sphere of symbolic culture. Based on the common folk culture, two national cultures have been formed nowadays – the Polish and Czech ones. Both Polish and Czech Census Bureau data and objective elements of national culture discussed in the essay indicate the process of national revival. The local people of Jaworzynka identify themselves as Poles and the population of Herczawa define themselves as Czechs. The content and the form of the local culture are visible in Jaworzyna, but they seem to be latent or diminishing in Herczawa.

The article presents the main historically based cultural factors of the Swedish welfare state. The article starts with the general characteristics of the welfare state model of Sweden, then points four main cultural factors of the Swedish welfare state, their historical origins and an impact on modern society. The author points peasant traditions of Swedish society, Lutheran set of moral principles, the primary role of the local community and the pacifist attitude of Swedish society as the main cultural factors of the Swedish-type of welfare state. The article ends with a conclusion that indicated cultural factors are the fundaments of Swedish society and any change of economic system will be strongly based on national culture and historically based national values.

Opposition between the notion of universalism, created in the age of Enlightenment and the Romantic tradition, which dominates in Central Europe is discussed in the article. Universalism is understood as the process of emancipation of man, but at the same time, in countries ‘between Russia and Germany’ it is also understood as the rule of adherence. In the Romantic tradition there is the symbolic extrapolation of historic experiences and the use of metaphors that have ethical universalism, both of which are described by the author in this article. The understanding of culture as a spiritual sphere w hich unites the national spirit was destroyed in the 20th century due to totalitarianism, but this grotesque tragedy from our absurd history has created ‘anti-modern modernism'.

Aim: A global rise in inflation has sparked a renewed interest in the matter of cash holding decisions in firms. Increasing inflation makes for different cash holding practices, but the effect of cash holdings on firm performance remains unclear. This study aims to determine what the effect of higher cash holdings is on financial performance in German and Dutch multinational corporations (MNCs) Design / Research methods: The sample consists of 105 MNCs, 69 of which are from Germany, while 36 firms are Dutch. Through a standard OLS regression, financial performance, measured in return on assets, is regressed on cash holdings, measured in a cash-to-assets ratio. Conclusions / findings: A negative relationship is found between cash holdings and financial performance. This is because agency costs are more considerable when pools of cash become larger. Moreover, the relationship is significantly negative in the German subsample, but not in the Dutch subsample. This could be explained by differences in masculinity in national culture. Originality / value of the article: The effect of cash holdings on firm performance has been neglected in the literature. By focusing on two similar countries, and introducing national culture into the discussion of cash management, the study is valuable to both management and literature. Limitations: Research design is rather limited. Findings are preliminary, and need to be verified through the use of more extensive studies. JEL: G30

Prezentowany tekst ma na celu pokazanie, że Ukraina jest państwem osadzonym pomiędzy Wschodem a Zachodem – tak w sensie geograficznym, jak i metaforycznym (czego niezwykle dramatycznym przykładem są wydarzenia z przełomu lat 2013/2014). Etnicznie i kulturowo nie jest krajem monolitycznym. Wiara w narodową jedność (rozumiana jako homogeniczna wspólnota), która jest wyrażana przez państwo ukraińskie, jest utopią. Potwierdza ten fakt analizowana w artykule kwestia języka. Przeprowadzone w pracy rozważania teoretyczne oparte na koncepcji kultury Scheina pokazują, że język jest jednym z elementów kształtowania kultury i powinien być brany pod uwagę jako jeden z podstawowych determinantów kształtujących kulturę pracy, a wraz z nią – zarządzanie organizacjami. Teoria kultury obecna w naukach o zarządzaniu stanowi odzwierciedlenie teorii kultury w nauce w ogóle. Zrozumienie realiów kulturowych danego kraju pomaga w kształtowaniu kultury organizacyjnej w konkretnym miejscu pracy, a wraz z nią – w zarządzaniu organizacjami. W przypadku państwa ukraińskiego mamy do czynienia z wzajemnym przenikaniem się i oddziaływaniem dwóch kultur. Zarządzanie w omawianym środowisku wymaga skupienia się bardziej na kulturze lokalnej niż państwowej.
The paper’s aim is to show that Ukraine is a country embedded between East and West - both in the geographical and the metaphorical terms. It is not a monolithic country – its ethnicity and the culture are complex phenomena, so the belief in the national unity of the Ukrainian society, which is expressed by the Ukrainian State, remains an utopia. This fact is reflected in the problematic of language, which is analysed in this paper. Theoretical considerations presented in the work, mainly the concept of culture by Schein, show that language is one of the crucial elements of a culture, and should be considered as one of the basic determinants influencing the culture of work, and with it – the management of organizations. Understanding the cultural reality – and so the cultural diversity of the country helps in shaping and understanding the organizational culture in a specific place of work. In the case of Ukraine we are facing an interpenetration and interaction of two cultures at least. Management in this environment requires focusing more on the local than the state patterns of culture.

Nation and national identity formation in Latin America. Selected issues The history of nation formation in Latin America cannot be easily interpreted within the frames of existing theoretical perspectives, such as modernism. The difficulty lies in the fact that the existing theories only partly apply to this region. The aim of this article is to present the processes of nation and national identity formation in Spanish America until the 1950s pointing to its main characteristics and selected factors of the most significant impact. Procesy formowania narodów i tożsamości narodowej w Ameryce ŁacińskiejHistoria powstawania narodów w Ameryce Łacińskiej nie daje się jednoznacznie zinterpretować w ramach istniejących schematów i ujęć teoretycznych (np. modernizmu). Trudność polega na tym, że znajdują one jedynie częściowe zastosowanie w odniesieniu do Ameryki Łacińskiej. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie procesów tworzenia narodów i tożsamości narodowej w Ameryce hiszpańskiej do połowy XX w. z uwzględnieniem wybranych głównych cech tego procesu i czynników, które miały na niego wpływ.

The article deals with the role of patriotic songs in shaping national identity of the Polish. The discourse is divided into three matters. The first part is introductory and treats about the most essential issues and research problems, regarding the key topic. I attempt to answer the raised questions in the last part of the work. The middle part of a historical character presents crucial research assumptions, along with all the transformations that have taken place over the years, and have been influencing our comprehending of national songs and strengthening the feeling of national identity. The final part sums the discourse up and is critical to the key topic. I strive to foresee possible consequences of the described phenomena. I derive my conclusions from the analysis, presented in the second part of the article, and from my personal experience, which has been gained due to long years of participating and organizing patriotic concerts and performances.
W poniższym artykule zajmuję się rozważaniami na temat współczesnej roli pieśni patriotycznej w kształtowaniu tożsamości narodowej Polaków. Artykuł został podzielony na trzy części. Pierwsza z nich ma charakter wprowadzający i przedstawia najważniejsze problemy badawcze dotyczące tematu. Druga część ma charakter historyczny, przedstawia najistotniejsze założenia badaczy oraz przemiany na przestrzeni lat naszego rozumienia znaczenia pieśni patriotycznych w kształtowaniu i umacnianiu polskiej tożsamości narodowej. Ostatnia część stanowi próbę przewidzenia przyszłych następstw analizowanego problemu. Przedstawione wnioski opierają się na analizie oraz obserwacjach własnych wynikających z wielu lat uczestniczenia, organizowania i tworzenia koncertów o charakterze patriotycznym.

The article reveals the actual for the modern human knowledge problem of specific of national culture in a European context through a philosophical and theoretical analysis of the cultural phenomenon of symbiosis as a major mechanism of Belarusian tradition. Author proves that the history and logic of the Belarusian-Polish cultural relations can be represented as a sequence and set of several "cultural experiences". Considered specifics of the Polish-Belarusian literature Romanticism as one of the most representative manifestations of the symbiotic nature of cultural correlations of Belarus. It is concluded that "the Belarusian cultural model" as a model of synthetic boundary cultural co-existence can be regarded as one of the most productive and heuristically important ones for a globalizing world.

Niniejszy tekst poświęcony kolędom w kulturze polskiej stanowi próbę krótkiej analizy wpływu tych szczególnych wytworów kultury na kształtowanie się zwyczajów związanych ze świętowaniem Bożego Narodzenia, a przez to na budowanie kultury narodowej. Kolęda jako muzyczny utwór religijny już sama w sobie stanowi wyraz przenikania się religii i sztuki. Dodatkowo jednak często przywodzi na myśl skojarzenie ze sztuką ludową, bliską człowiekowi, co podkreśla jeszcze jej szczególny wymiar jednoczący — tak w rodzinie, jak i we wspólnocie narodowej. W Polsce kultura, szczególnie ludowa, kształtowana była przede wszystkim przez religijność chrześcijańską, stąd też jej wpływ na rozwój tożsamości i odrębności narodowej jest bardzo znaczny. Ponadto pokazany został wpływ odwrotny, tj. w jaki sposób konkretna sytuacja polityczno-historyczna Polski oddziaływała na powstające w danych okresach nowe kolędy i jednocześnie w nich miała swoje odzwierciedlenie. W tekście przedstawione zostały jedynie wybrane przykłady kolęd, które obrazują przenikanie się religii i kultury, a także podkreślają kształtowanie przez kolędy postawy patriotycznej.
The paper on carol in Polish culture is an attempt at a brief analysis of the influence of these particular cultural products on the development of the customs associated with Christmas celebrations and the building of national culture. Carol as a musical religious piece shows the penetration of religion and art. In addition, it is often associated with folk art, close to man. It also highlights its unique dimension of unity—in the family and in the national community. In Poland, especially folk culture, it was shaped primarily by Christian religiosity, and its influence on the development of identity and national identity is very significant. In addition, the opposite was shown—how the specific political and historical situation of Poland influenced the new Christmas carols created in specific periods and at the same time reflected in them. Only selected examples of carols were presented in the paper, which illustrate the interpenetration of religion and culture and also highlight the formation of attitude of patriotism by carol.
