Opis:
The aim of the article is to analyze the presentation of the novel body in the literature of the second half of the nineteenth century against the backdrop of the crisis of structures that appears along with romanticism and gains strength in the second half of the nineteenth century. This was a time saturated with ideas of socio-biological evolutionism, which promote materialism, entropy, transformation and the disintegration of permanent structures, including socio-economic ones (Marx, Capital). Flaubert, Zola and Mirbeau, faithful to this poetics, subordinate the presentation of the body to the dynamics of change, including images of “volatilization” and decay. These “volatile” and crumbling bodies are at odds with the realist-naturalistic poetics prevailing in the second half of the nineteenth century, dominated by ostentatious materialism. This peculiar transformation of the physical state of matter, from “solid” to “volatile,” may have been interpreted as a symptom of a change in the way reality is presented. As this analysis shows, the volatility of bodies becomes in realist writers an indestructible form of decay and (still) a material form of absence that resists destruction by death. Paradoxically, taking a volatile form, the body does not disappear but reorganizes itself, dematerializing, transforming and reappearing. Both representations of the body and emerging modernity appear as a dynamic, constantly changing process and not as a frozen structure.

Opis:
In Mirbeau's novel Le Jardin des supplices (1899), the circular representation, completed and relayed by design of the plant, should be read violently. The reader conceives some philosophical influences or convergences. The Narcissus myth is subjected here to a literary transmutation. The novel tells a personal obsession; it becomes a reconciliation between earlier fictions [L'Abbé Jules (1888), Dans le ciel (1892-1893)] and his dramatic work which is coming.

Opis:
The nineteenth century sees a new vision of the artist. Faced with a bourgeois and materialistic society, he stands as a cantor of a haughty and disinterested art. Such a gap between the artist and the public must produce tension and give rise on both sides to the feeling of incomprehension which often degenerates into contempt. Charles Baudelaire contributes a lot to this conception of art, where the notion of contempt often comes up: contempt for the bourgeois public, the gentrified artist, the narrow-minded art critic – but also, the scorn of the profanum uulgus directed against the artist. Three decades later, Octave Mirbeau uses this same notion to build his model of artist – public relations, a model very similar to that of Baudelaire. Our objective is therefore twofold: to analyze the concept of contempt for both artists, and to identify many affinities that exist at the thematic, stylistic and rhetorical level in their writings on art.

Opis:
Before World War 1, French painter Léon Bonnat became famous by portraying celebrities, among which almost every leading politician in the newly founded Republic. His academic and dark style however was criticized by art critics and humourists; hence his portraits put on stage in character comedies have to be read as critics of the very people they represent and of himself as an official artist.

Opis:
This article studies the tools and strategies employed in the creation of caricature in one of the prototypical works of the European exotic discourse. Le Jardin des Supplices is indeed an important milestone in the formation of stereotypes about China; however, this representation, far from seeking to develop a realistic depiction of China, or even to point out its supposed barbarity, aims, on the contrary, at producing a caricature of its counterpart, Europe, while using verbal and figurative exacerbation as main devices. Le Jardin des Supplices acts as a mirror in which the West recognizes itself in the described phantasmagorical utopia; in this sadistic farce, we will therefore identify both a parody of European institutional structures and a pastiche of the characteristic features of literary decadence. Notwithstanding, Le Jardin des Supplices provides a lasting and ironical view of the representation of China and the Chinese in the collective unconscious.

Opis:
The paper analyses the image of female domestic servants and their condition as unmarried women in three examples of nineteenth‑century French literature: A Simple Heart by Gustave Flaubert (1875), Germinie Lacerteux (1865) by Edmond and Jules de Goncourt and Diary of a Chamber-maid (1900) by Octave Mirbeau. The protagonists of these stories represent interesting versions of stereotypical images present in a great number of contemporary works: the life of a loyal and sacrificed servant (Flaubert), the sad history of a servant succumbing to sexual temptations (E. and J, de Goncourt) and the subversive portrait of a perverted chambermaid, exploited by and exploiting their masters at the same time (Mirbeau). The common trait of the three women is their solitude, as service means for them to remain unmarried, unable to realize the role considered socially as the only proper for a woman.
