Opis:
The Mediterranean diet is characterized by abundance of plant foods, such as vegetables, fruit, bread and cereal products, legumes, nuts and seeds, as well as olive oil, herbs and spices. Moreover, moderate intakes of dairy products, fish, poultry and wine, and low consumption of red meat are recommended. This diet is low in saturated fat (<7% of energy) with total fat within the range of 25-35% of energy. To assess dietary compliance cardiovascular diseases with the recommendations of the Mediterranean diet a variety of indicators are used, of which the most common are: 9-point scale of alternate Mediterranean Diet Score (aMED) and 14-item Questionnaire of Mediterranean diet adherence (MDA). The results of the epidemiological research indicate that the nutrition model based on the assumptions of the Mediterranean diet is a crucial component of primary and secondary prevention of 25-35% of energy.

Opis:
The article aims to analyse the Mediterranean city as a labyrinthine space based on the trilogy Drifting Cities (1961– 1965) and on the novel Lost Spring (1976) by Stratis Tsirkas (1911–1980). In order to represent space-time in a state of instability and crisis, with that space-time being Jerusalem, Cairo and Alexandria during the Second World War, and Athens during the socio-political disturbances of July 1965, the author resorts to the myth of the labyrinth. This myth evokes, on the one hand, the maze-like structure of an unknown urban landscape, and, on the other hand, socio-political disorder. As Mediterranean cities, Romanesque cities are hybrid and complex. For this reason, they appear as an “in-between” of the real and the imaginary, of the past and the present. It is by relying on the concept of thirdspace (Edward Soja), that the complex character of the Mediterranean city will be highlighted. However, each of these cities has its own specific features: Jerusalem appears as a chessboard where secret agents and obscure organisations engage in innumerable parties to satisfy their interests, Cairo presents itself as a political and social labyrinth, Alexandria refers to a labyrinth of intrigue and machinations and Athens is the home of the monsters of power.

Introduction and aim. The popularity of the Mediterranean diet is increasing and following it has many health benefits, including improving mental well-being. The aim of the study was to assess the nutritional knowledge about the Mediterranean diet and its practical application among students in Poland. Material and methods. The study assessed a group of 313 students in Poland. The research tool was a questionnaire that focused on knowledge about the Mediterranean diet. Results. The study showed that in terms of knowledge of the Mediterranean diet, students scored on average 6.5±3.2 points (on a scale 0–11). When it comes to dietary compliance, the average score was 6.3±2.4 points (scale 1–13 points). The better the knowledge of the diet, the better the compliance with its rules. Statistically, the analysis showed that there is a significant relationship between the age and/or academic degree of the students and their higher level of knowledge. The greater compliance with Mediterranean eating patterns was influenced by the location, age, or education of the respondents. Conclusion. The study shows that the surveyed group of students in Poland has only an average level of knowledge and compliance with the Mediterranean diet.

Opis:
This article aimes to shed light on the rich, but rather enigmatic relationship between Finland and the Mediterranean world. These interactions have been approached since Antiquity, but this paper's focus has been on 19th and 20th centuries and especially on the last three decades. About thirty years ago, when Finland was preparing itself to join the European Union, it also had to build up a real Mediterranean policy of its own. It was in the Corfu European Council in June 1994 when the then-president realised that the country needed such a policy. Thus, in 1995, when Finland joined the EU, it also participated in the Barcelona Euro-Mediterranean Conference and signed the Barcelona Declaration that established the Barcelona Process forming the structures for European Union cooperation with the southern and eastern Mediterranean countries. The participation into this structural process was felt important for Finland mainly for two reasons. Firstly, the country wanted to be a full and active member of the EU and thus contribute to every field of activity that are important for the union. Secondly, we Finns realised that if we wanted the southern European countries to understand and to cooperate with our own ambitions in the northern part of Europe, we needed to show solidarity towards the aims and needs of our southern partners in the Mediterranean. All this resulted in Finland being surprisingly active in all Euro-Mediterranean cooperation environments. This concerned not only official state activities, but also other public sectors as well as civil society actors and NGOs. These EuroMediterranean activities became so many and so multiform that we can deal only with a few of them here as examples.

Opis:
Cyrkulacja strefowa została zablokowana i wzrosło prawdopodobieństwo wystąpienia quasi-południkowych trajektorii niżów.
The paper presents the characteristics of the life cycle of the “Yvette” cyclone and the associated rainfall in Europe. The low originated on May 13th over the Gulf of Genoa. The system moved along Vb route over the Hungarian lowlands, then changed its path to the west. The system was visible on the maps for approx 4.5 days. Heavy rain affected areas of Serbia situated south-west of Belgrade. On May 14th the daily totals reached 112 mm in Belgrade and 130 mm in Loznica. In Bosnia and Herzegovina the rainfall was much lower than in Serbia. In Croatia the precipitation maxima were smaller than in Serbia and BiH. In Poland the highest rainfall occurred between 15 and 17 of May. Record amount of pre-cipitation was measured on May 15th in Zakopane (114 mm). If Yvette trajectory had not been shifted from the Vb pathway toward the west the precipitation and flood risk in Poland would have been higher.

Opis:
Overweight or obesity which often develop in athletes who end their careers is one of the most important issues of the world of sport. During aging, an increase in the amount of intra-abdominal fat is observed; this fat increases the risk of such metabolic disease as diabetes or hypertension. The participants of the study were 94 males. The people were randomly assigned to one of 2 groups: group 1 – people using the diet based on calorie restriction CRON (n = 32), and group 2 – those who followed the recommendations of the Mediterranean diet (n = 34). The patients who at the check-up declared not following any diet were assigned to the control group (n = 28). A change in parameters was observed in each of the sub-groups after the intervention. The most significant changes were observed in the sub-group which lost >2.6 kg. Both the diet based on mild calorie restriction and the Mediterranean diet had positive effect on the change of the former athlete’s body parameters after the 6-week long dietary intervention. Both diets which were being tested changed the body composition of the athletes who ended their careers in a similar way.

Olea europaea is the most emblematic tree of the Mediterranean region. It has been cultivated for about 6000 years for its fruit, oil, wood, and for medicinal and cultural purposes. The research data concerns the monumental olive trees in the region. The oldest and biggest known trees are in Lebanon, Israel, Greece, Albania and Italy. The oldest of those, ‘Sisters of Noahʼ (Lebanon) are believed to be 5000–6000 years old. The most numerous groups of monumental olives were reported from Apulia in Italy and Albania. The oldest and biggest olive trees could be remnants of ancient plantations from the Hellenic and Roman times, but this hypothesis should be confirmed in a detailed study.

Purpose: To assess the knowledge of young adults (students of dietetics) of the health benefits of the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) and the practical application of the principles of this diet. Materials and methods: The study was performed on 97 women, students of dietetics. Research on general information about the respondents and knowledge about the MedDiet was carried out using a questionnaire with 29 questions. To assess the nutritional value of the diet, a 3-day nutritional diary and computer programme Diet 5.0 were used. Adherence to the MedDiet was appraised according to the 9-point scale of aMED (alternate Mediterranean Diet Score). Results: The most students responded that they have high knowledge of the MedDiet, but do not use the MedDiet recommendations in their daily nutrition. Better adherence to MedDiet was significantly associated with the lower waist circumference of the women, higher intake of mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids, omega3 fatty acids, fiber, vitamin C, folate, vitamin B1, vitamin E and magnesium, and the knowledge of participants of the diet and nutritional value of foods. Conclusions: The adherence to the MedDiet is significantly associated with the participants' knowledge about the diet, the higher nutritional value of the daily diet and lower waist circumference

Immigration and refugee flows in the Eastern Mediterranean migration path have been increased since 2015, thus, creating the need for coordinated political reaction from the European Union. Some actions have been achieved, such as the EU-Turkey agreement but their effectiveness is contested, while the burden is mainly shared by the Mediterranean EU member states. At the same time, the challenges for all European countries in terms of refugees integration is becoming more and more eminent, due to the continuing immigration flows to the EU. This article analyses two basic parameters on the necessity of coordinated European policy both in the fields of immigration policy and foreign policy towards the stabilization in the Eastern Mediterranean, mainly by focusing on the role of Greece.

During August 2000 and February 2001 two cruises were carried out along the Egyptian Mediterranean Coast on the Egyptian r/v ‘El-Yarmouk’. The samples collected were used to study the ecology and distribution of hydromedusae and siphonophores during summer and winter. The density of hydromedusae was high in the inshore waters during summer (av. 71 org × 100 m−3), decreasing to 28 organisms per 100 m3 in the oceanic waters; in winter they were more abundant in the middle and offshore zones. Ato tal of 9 hydromedusae species were recorded during the present study, 8 of them in summer. The most common of these were Aglaura hemistoma, Olindias singularis, Liriope tetraphylla and Geryonia proboscidalis. Only 4 species were recorded during winter, including Cunina octonaria, which was not recorded during the summer. The nine species recorded in the present study are circumtropical. The siphonophore density was high in summer. In winter, the average standing crop of siphonophores fell to about 30% of that recorded in summer. 11 siphonophore species were recorded, 10 of them in summer; Cucullus campanula and Eudoxoides spiralis were the most common. Only 6 species were recorded in winter. These 11 species are widely distributed – they have been recorded from the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. Strong seasonality is thus a striking feature of Egyptian Mediterranean waters. Temperature is the most variable factor affecting the planktonic community, fluctuating between 26.5 and 27◦C in summer and between 16.3 and 17.5◦C in winter. The western part of the Egyptian coast, the area under study in this work, is poorly diversified in comparison with the eastern part.

Opis:
The article presents the course of the average annual trajectory of van Bebber’s Vb cyclones. The most rainfall-efficient section of the trajectory, i.e. the occurrence region of cyclones which produce the highest precipitation in Poland, was delimited. A map of average daily precipitation totals associated with Vb lows was constructed as well as a map indicating the maximum rainfall i.e. the highest sum of daily precipitation at the weather station in the period 1958‒2008 associated with the Vb cyclones situated close to the most rainfall-efficient segment of the trajectory. Vb route begins at the Balearic Sea and ends over southern Finland. The highest rainfall in Poland is associated with lows situated in the vicinity of the middle section of the trajectory – over eastern Hungary, western Romania or southern Slovakia. The highest average amount of rainfall can be observed in south-eastern Poland, particularly in the Żywiec dale, in the Tatras, and over the Lublin Upland. Maximum daily rainfall associated with Vb cyclones occurred on Śnieżka peak and reached 129.2 mm.

Undoubtedly, one of the greatest achievements of antiquity in the Mediterranean basin is the origin and development of the city in a very broad sense; not only as the functional human settlement, but also the idea that found its place in philosophy. This article is a synthetic discussion of ancient Mediterranean urban planning in terms of its search of the ideal form of the city. Already in Mesopotamia and Egypt in the 4th - 3rd millennium BC they began to "experiment" with the layout of a functional and convenient city for its residents. However, only in the Greek and then Roman world did the ideal form find its full realization. It was then that the most representative examples of the ideal city were created.

The paper presents the conditions and prospects for the development of Euro-Mediterranean cooperation in the field of renewable energy sources (RES). The first part characterises the objectives of the European Union and member states in the field of renewable energy, the second concerns the energy situation in Mediterranean countries, in particular the renewable energy sector, the third presents renewable energy projects implemented within the framework of the Euro-Mediterranean initiative, and part four shows the problems related to the implementation of projects in the renewable energy sector, both in Mediterranean countries as well as within the framework of Euro-Mediterranean programmes. Europe’s energy strategy is closely linked to energy security and diversification of the energy sector by increasing production and consumption of energy from renewable sources. This goal is to be achieved by both domestic production of RES and through trade. Due to their geographical proximity, co-developed institutions and potential, Mediterranean countries are a priority in this strategy. The development of the renewable energy sector in Mediterranean countries may also generate indirect positive effects for Europe and stimulate enhanced Euro-Mediterranean coop- eration in other socio-economic fields.

Opis:
From immemorial time, many Tyrrhenian places of ancient Sicily and Italy were identified (also by the local people) with the main stages of the return of Ulysses (Cyclopes, Aeolus, Circe, etc.). Some Hellenistic critics (for example Aristarchus and Polybius) assumed that it was from the various ancient and pre-Homeric myths that Homer drew inspiration, in the same way that he did with the myth of the Trojan War, which certainly occurred before him. Thus, the voyage of Ulysses, after his losing the course because of the storm at Cape Malea, had to be located in those sites. But how can one explain the fact that Homer places the voyage from Circe to the Hades over the Ocean? Is it only a pseudogeographic poetic touch, aimed to magnify the exploit? Crates of Mallus did not think so: in his opinion, only some of the numerous adventures had taken place in the Tyrrhenian Sea, whereas Homer had purposefully placed some other exactly on the Atlantic Ocean, beyond the Pillars of Hercules (the ancient name given to the Straits of Gibraltar). Whichever of the two models one chooses, the route of Ulysses seems to be completely unlikely, both from the point of view of objective reality and from the point of view of poetic imagination (if one desires to retain at least some plausibility). It appears to be a senseless coming and going that takes the shape of some sort of a labyrinth. Furthermore, the navigation times suggested by the text do not accord at all (even approximately) with the distances among the real sites. For this reason, Eratosthenes held that, from Cape Malea onwards, Ulysses switched from the real world to that of fantasy, or better still to the world of some narrative fable that does not heed geography at all. The modern critics are inclined to agree with him and this thesis is nowadays the most popular one. Yet, a very serious objection can be raised here: the myth and the epos (since the most archaic era), are strictly linked to the geography and the topography as well – they are radically refractory to a narrative fable that totally contradicts the then realities of time and space. Why should Ulysses plunge from Cape Malea onwards straight into the Neverland kingdom? If we combine Odyssey’s data with those we can reconstruct for the earliest form of the Argonautic saga (taking also into account the chronology of the Greek western colonization), then we get the solution that neither the ancient nor the modern critics have guessed correctly: up to around the middle of the 8th century B.C., the Greeks thought the Ocean to flow just after the Sicily Channel, essentially coinciding with the so-called Tyrrhenian Sea, still completely unknown at that time. This new perspective can well justify the objective disorder of Ulysses’ route. Above all, it also bears a deeper poetic sense: the Hero had the chance to know and to experience not only some far and exotic countries in general terms (as it can happen to any off-course sailor), but he also met the very boundaries of the surfacing lands and the rushing waters which encircle the terrestrial disc, bordering the external cosmic abyss. Ulysses came back home alive. He was able to tell the stories about the lands where no human being could ever sail. This borderline that geographically is clearly located marks at the same time the insurmountable chasm between the physical and the meta-physical world.

Opis:
Securitization of environmental problems in the Euro-Mediterranean area (Euromed) seems to be a crucial issue that impacts stabilization of this region in the 21st century. The European Union, as the main actor in this field, regularly declares and stresses that lack of natural environment protection and of preventive actions undertaken by the states of the Mediterranean Sea Basin’s southern flank will transform into an existential threat to the security of this common region. Such a declaration on being endangered formulated by the states of its northern flank, i.e. European part of the Mediterranean, is a kind of a speech act (securitization). Thus, this paper aims to analyze securitization of environmental threats in the Euromed. Firstly, it needs to explain and present the evolution of security itself and its widening scope (environmental dimension). In order to examine the securitization of environmental problems, an analysis of the specific functional and institutional structure of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) is required.

The aim of the paper is to review the ancient sources devoted to the sea monster called κάμπη (f. ā-stem). Some researchers believe that it is also attested as κάμπος (n. es-stem). The zoonym in question, so named by the reason of a similarity of the marine animal to a caterpillar, evidently derives from the verb κάμπτω ‘to bend, curve’. The dramatist and philosopher Epicharmus of Kos (ca. 530–440 BC) was probably the first Greek writer who mentioned the sea monster κάμπη. Such a supposition is confirmed by the gloss κάμπη· κῆτος παρὰ Ἐπιχάρμῳ, registered in Hesychius’ lexicon (5th–6th c. AD). According to most modern lexicographers, the alternative form κάμπος n. ‘a sea monster’ is attested in one literary work in the form of the genitive plural καμπέων (Lyc., Alex. 414). The author intends to verify whether the alleged variant κάμπος (n. es-stem) is an authentic lexical item or a doubtful guess.

The objective of the paper is to present assumptions and to attempt the assessment of financial instruments implementation providing the support for the Mediterranean Partnership from the European Union. The author’s intention was to offer a review of the available financial instruments since each of them may be characterized in more detail considering the broad spectrum of factors, determinants and interdependencies influencing the form, purpose and assessment of the discussed instruments. The first part of the paper illustrates the profile of the European Union constituting the part of a geopolitical group, as well as the situation of North Africa and Middle East countries. The European Union holds a very strong position in international relations which depends, among others, on its regional influence and involvement in international political, economic and social reality. This position is of crucial significance from the perspective of roles played by the European Union also with regard to neighbouring countries located in the Mediterranean region. The countries of North Africa and Middle East, despite frequently difficult historical relations and interdependencies with the European countries as well as their specific culture, in the current peace oriented reality became the beneficiaries of aid coming from the European Union and therefore took up the role of EU cooperating partners on many levels. The roles played by the European Union in the Mediterranean region are influenced by both internal and external factors. From among numerous functions took over by the European Union the most important ones are those of: an active actor in solving Arab-Israeli conflict, advocate of providing means for the establishment of peace among nations, supporting relations based on mutual trust and disarmament in the region, promoter of economic reforms and sustainable, regional development, propagator of democracy and human rights as well as intercultural dialogue. These roles aim at bringing peace, stability and wealth in the region and result in higher EU safety level and also the implementation of its interests. The concept of these roles is presented in bilateral agreements entered into and concluded by the European Union. Among the most important agreements the following should be listed: the Barcelona Declaration dated 28th November 1995 which initiated the Mediterranean Partnership and Joint Declaration of the Paris Summit for the Mediterranean Region dated 13th July 2008 initiating Union for the Mediterranean.

The aim of the article is to analyze NATO’s activities in ensuring security in the Mediterranean and the importance of this basin for security in the region and outside. Therefore, the main research problem in this article boils down to the question: how is the activity of the North Atlantic Alliance in the Mediterranean, and what role does this basin play in the regional and global security systems? The article indicates the multifaceted importance of the Mediterranean Sea for NATO, key challenges and threats generated in this region, as well as actions taken by the Alliance to build safety in this area. During the conducted research, theoretical methods were used primarily, i.e., source analysis, synthesis, abstraction or generalization. Research was carried out based on scientific articles, monographs and websites, in particular the official website of the North Atlantic Alliance. In the course of research, an institutional and legal analysis method was also used, involving the analysis of normative documents issued by NATO.

A new quasimetric approach is used to statistically analyze taphonomic data from a commonly occurring shallow water clypeasteroid echinoid in order to obtain metric equivalent measurements of taphonomic alteration on an interval-like scale. This technique takes the character condition as well as its proportion into account and translates the taphonomic alteration into data, which behave as interval scaled and thus allows for the use of parametric as well as non-parametric statistics. Tests of Echinocyamus pusillus from Giglio Island (Mediterranean Sea, Italy) were analyzed with respect to a suite of taphonomic features including abrasion of the test surface, tubercles, ambulacral and genital pore margins as well as, if present, the outline and cross section of predatory drillholes. The degree of fragmentation and encrustation was also determined. Taphonomic features were analyzed using a semi-quantitative approach with three degrees of test alteration including non-altered, moderately altered, and highly altered which were statistically analyzed using non-parametric statistics due to highly non-normal distributed data. Abrasion intensities vary among different surface characters, with exposed areas of the test showing higher abrasion intensities than sheltered areas. Fragmentation occurs in low frequencies (7%) and fractures in the tests are almost absent (1.7%). Encrustation rates by bryozoans and serpulids can cover up to 80% of the test surface, but vary strongly among individuals and sample sites. Encrustation is independent of test size and prolongs overall test survival by crossing plate boundaries. The presence of drillholes in decreasing test preservation potentials is discussed with respect to analytical parameters.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to analyze the level of physical activity in people with diabetes, depending on their characteristics. Methods: The sample consisted of 81 participants with type 1 and type 2 diabetes and belonging to a diabetes care association. First of all, the participants completed the short version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire and the Mediterranean Diet Adherence Questionnaire online. Subsequently, they indicated their sex, age, type of diabetes, the presence of other complications and the years since diagnosis. In addition, data on consumption of tobacco and alcohol, glycosylated hemoglobin and fasting glucose were collected. For the analysis of the data, t-test for independent samples was used to compare means between categories, always with a level of significance of p <.05. Furthermore, effect size was calculated through Cohen’s d. Finally, the frequency and the percentage of the variables were calculated. Findings: The results showed in all the categories an average level of physical activity higher than the recommendations of physical activity for people with diabetes, being the level of physical activity predominantly moderate. Although women also complied with the recommendations for physical activity, their level of physical activity was significantly lower than the level of men Conclusions: It is recommended to expand the research on the barriers and motivations found by people with diabetes to practice physical activity, playing special attention to women with diabetes.

Two types of large, branched structures from the Lower Pleistocene (Calabrian) high-energy calcarenites of Favignana Island are described: Faviradixus robustus gen. et sp. nov. and Egadiradixus rectibrachiatus gen. et sp. nov. They may be interpreted as root structures of large plants, trees and trees or shrubs, respectively. The former taxon co-occurs with the marine animal trace fossils Ophiomorpha nodosa, Ophiomorpha isp., Thalassinoides isp. and Beaconites isp. The interpretation as root structures although tentative is probable and can be related to short emergence episodes for the formation of E. rectibrachiatus or to longer emergence, responsible for the discontinuity at the base of the overlying Tyrrhenian deposits, for F. robustus. Calcified root mats of smaller plants associated with the Tyrrhenian or younger emergence surfaces are common.

Aim: This article investigates the effects of two attacks and a failed coup attempt during 2016 on the tourist behavior. Foreign tourist data for the 2003-2019 period is analyzed to observe irregularities in Turkey’s national tourism income. Design / Research methods: Linear regression, multivariate regression and regression based static forecasting methods are applied for modeling the relationships. These models are supported with statistical tests. Conclusions / findings: Results on this study are in accordance with the current literature in the sense that conflicts in 2016 caused a shift in tourist behavior which in turn impaired the tourism industry in Turkey. Repercussions did not endure longer than expected and Turkish tourism recovered rapidly, only facing a serious loss due to the shift in tourism demand trend. Originality / value of the article: This study makes an addition to the terror and tourism literature, especially for the Mediterranean region and specifically for Turkey both of which are among the most popular tourist destinations worldwide. The aftermath of attacks and the coup attempt in Turkey during 2016 have not been researched before. The data and the outcomes presented sufficient evidence to infer on this issue.

Opis:
The aging population is a significant social, medical and economic problem due to increasing prevalence of chronic diseases in elderly population. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia and the most common neurodegenerative disease. It is characterized by a progressive deterioration of memory and cognitive function. So far, there is neither an effective prevention nor cure for dementia, so more and more attention is paid to the prevention of this group of diseases, particularly to the appropriate diet. Preventive intervention gives the best results if introduced before the first symptoms of dementia, i.e., around the age of 50. This is when the nutritional status, number of synapses, cognition, and neuropathological changes in the nervous system compensate each other, which increases the chances of staying healthy for a longer period of time. It has been proven that dietary habits, which lead to the development of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, significantly increase the risk of dementia. On the other hand, a Mediterranean diet rich in antioxidants, fiber and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids may have a protective effect on the neurodegenerative process. The beneficial effect of many nutrients on the course of AD has been demonstrated. These include: glutathione, polyphenols, curcumin, coenzyme Q10, vitamins B6, B12, folic acid, unsaturated fatty acids, lecithin, UA, caffeine and some probiotic bacteria. A diet rich in saturated fatty acids and branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) promotes the progression of dementia. Dietary intervention should be introduced as early as possible to minimize the risk of developing dementia. The Mediterranean and DASH diets have been documented to protect against AD. However, the MIND diet is reported to be much more effective in preventing cognitive decline/dementia than either the Mediterranean or DASH diets alone.

The paper then investigates the efect of Israel's territorial expansion after 1967 on Israeli ideas about geostrategy. Finally, the paper shows how changing global, regional, and technological variables in the last two decades have transformed how Israeli elites understand their geostrategic realities and how they allocate resources in response to these changing conditions.

The role of coins is not limited only to a means of payment, but through the various iconographic and epigraphic contents they contain, coins are also a means of cultural communication. The obverse and reverse of coins are a specific form of image, which includes motifs understood as a repeating decorative element that is also a pattern or an iconographic element expressing specific symbolism and themes. Archaeological motifs reflect archaeological monuments or their elements, and their themes commemorate not only the monument itself, but also related aspects studied by archaeologists, e.g. the broadly understood context. The aim of the considerations was to examine the numismatic form of commemorating and popularizing archaeological heritage on the example of selected motifs referring to monuments of Mediterranean archeology appearing on European coins in the years 1990–2005. First, the motifs were analyzed in terms of the form of their depiction on coins, then the archaeological theme with which themotifs were connected was determined and, on its basis, axiological considerations were carried out, the aim of which was to learn a potential answer to the question – why a given motif was placed on a coin.

As a result, what the journey to Italy becomes for Wat is not only a discovery of the beauty of landscape and the plenty of art, but, most importantly, an experience of physical contact with the Mediterranean land, an initiation into the fascinating witnessing of the incarnation of cultural tradition into a visible landscape, a sensual initiation into the legacy of the Mediterranean. The coda of the text is his unexpected reminiscence from the first journey to Italy recorded in a social realist drama.

Leaves from three fig (Ficus carica L.) varieties (White, Black Royal and White Royal) were collected at different development stages of the tree, i.e. flowering, fruit development, fruit maturity, and postharvest, after which the variation of macro- (K, Na, Ca, Mg, N, P) and micronutrient (Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, B) concentrations during the growing season were measured. The leaf concentrations of N, P, K, Ca and Mg during the studied period for the White variety ranged from 19 to 25, from 1.1 to 1.3, from 13 to 18, from 20 to 24 and from 2.7 to 2.9 g kg-1 (on dry weight basis DW), respectively. The corresponding values for the Black Royal variety ranged from 22 to 26, from 1.1 to 1.4, from 13 to 19, from 23 to 29 and from 2.5 to 3.4 g kg-1 (DW), respectively. The corresponding values for the White Royal variety ranged from 19 to 25, 0.9 to 1.2, 10 to 17, 26 to 30 and 4.3 to 4.5 g kg-1 (DW), respectively. The leaf content values of Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, and B during the studied period for the White variety ranged from 107 to 147, from 42 to 35, from 10 to 9, from 52 to 61 and from 23 to 40 mg kg-1 (DW), respectively. The corresponding values for the Black Royal variety ranged from 77 to 155, from 38 to 41, from 8 to 9, from 52 to 66 and from 23 to 56 mg kg-1 (DW), respectively. The corresponding values for the White Royal variety ranged from 84 to 126, from 44 to 48, from 8 to 9, from 88 to 98 and from 23 to 47 mg kg-1 (DW), respectively. According to the results, the leaf nutritional content varies in the plant’s development stages and there were differences between the fig varieties in the nutrient content at different development stages, which indicated that different varieties of plants need different amounts of nutrients during the growing cycle. These results should be taken into consideration when elaborating a fertilization program.

The main goal is to analyze the complexity of the threats and challenges emerging from the Mediterranean region, as well as the institutional framework for peacekeeping operations, with a focus on EU involvement in the Mediterranean. The article attempts to answer the question of whether a regional organization such as the EU has effective instruments to improve security in its southern neighbourhood.

Coastal storms as extreme hydrometeorological events have severe impacts on the coasts and consequently affect the coastal communities, attracting considerable research interest nowadays. Attempting to understand the risk of these extreme events, a coastal storm analysis is accomplished by studying the parameters which define a coastal storm and their properties, such as the wave height, the wave period, the duration, the calm period, and the storm energy. The frequency of occurrence of coastal storms, the thresholds of storm parameters and the way they are interrelating with each other draw a rough outline of wave climate during coastal storm events for a specific location. This information is valuable afterwards for the design of coastal structures and the coastal zone management. In this work, buoy datasets from 30 locations in the Mediterranean Sea are analysed for describing coastal storm activity. A sample of 4008 coastal storms is identified. Each location faces around 10—14 coastal storms per year, with most of them to occur in winter months and their characteristics to be sitedependent. Their average duration is lower than 30 hours, and 25% of them are consecutive events which hit the same location in less than a day. Furthermore, the wave period and the main direction present no remarkable fluctuations during a coastal storm. With this analysis, a deeper understanding of coastal storm severity is pursued, gaining knowledge about their past activity, in order to be prepared in the future and to protect the coastal areas.

Juniperus excelsa s. str. (Greek juniper) in Crimea is a relic species on the limits of its range, and represents the Mediterranean flora in the Sub-Mediterranean part of the peninsula. Its origin and history in this area remains unresolved. We aimed to analyze phylogeny and potential demographic expansion of the juniper in the Crimea as well as to study its morphological differentiation. We analyzed plant material from 59 trees inhabiting eight populations. Genetic variation assessments were based on the four non-coding chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) fragments and the nuclear internal transcribed spacer region ITS1-5,8S-ITS2 (ITS). To examine the morphological differentiation, eight measured/counted traits of cones, seeds, and shoots were chosen and eight ratios were calculated. Morphological parameters were compared using ANOVA, Student’s t test, discrimination analysis and Kruskal-Wallis and U MannWhitney tests. Two cpDNA fragments were polymorphic and, in total, 10 cpDNA haplotypes were found. Haplotype diversity (Hd) ranged from 0.0 to 0.9. Based on both cpDNA and ITS sequences variation, phylogenetic analyses revealed a close relationship of the Crimean junipers to the individuals from other parts of the species range. In general, our molecular results confirmed the low level of genetic differentiation of J. excelsa individuals inhabiting different parts of the species range, likely resulting from a common ancestry. Only slight morphological differences were found between populations with different geographic location or habitat. The analyzes showed the distinctness of the populations from the southern part of the coast. Some unique morphological and molecular features of southern coastal populations imply that they are remnants of Late Pleistocene abundant forests. We suggest that the recent fragmentation of the Juniperus populations in the Crimean Peninsula could have arisen during the Atlantic period of the Holocene.

Throughout the period between the 11th and 15th centuries, Christian and Arabic countries as well as territorial dominions, although faced with feudal political chaos, managed to take joint action against pirates. Piracy was unanimously treated as a major risk both to inshore safety and safety at sea, as well as to trade and economic growth. Attempts were made to establish institutional framework for prosecuting the pirates and setting terms under which respective counties would remain legally liable. International treaties had laid foundations for the aforementioned framework and imposed certain liabilities on the countries. A number of treaties concluded during the period under discussion and published by an archivist in the 19th century enables modern researchers to get to know the Law of Nations created somewhere in between the Islamic and European legal cultures.

Objectives: The objective of the present study was to perform an analysis of the barriers to the practice of physical activity and diet in people with diabetes mellitus residing in Spain. Methods: Ninety participants (40 men and 50 women) with type 1 diabetes mellitus (71) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (19) residing in Spain, and aged between 12 and 80 years (average age 41.12 ± 17.04) were part of the present study. The participants were asked about the sociodemographic variables of sex and age, as well as the type of diabetes, the presence of other associated pathologies and the years elapsed since their diagnosis. The participants were also asked about the consumption of tobacco and alcohol. Afterwards, the barriers or difficulties perceived in relation to physical exercise were assessed through the Barriers Self-Report for the Practice of Physical Activity (BSPPA) and the diet with the Questionnaire of Adherence to the Mediterranean Diet (MEDAS-14). Then, the participants provided information regarding their last blood test with respect to the levels of glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and fasting glucose. A descriptive analysis was carried out to present the characteristics of the sample as well as the barriers for the practice of physical activity presented by the sample studied. Finally, a comparison analysis of means was carried out using the Student's t test for independent samples, showing the significant differences between the barriers for the practice of physical activity according to the characteristics of the sample. Findings: The data showed how the Obligations / Lack of time factor represents the main barrier to the practice of physical activity in this population, especially in women, in those under 65 and in people with type 1 diabetes. Conclusions: In general, it is observed that all those categories that may indicate a less healthy lifestyle have a greater degree of agreement with the perceived barriers.

Considering the general typology of landscapes, winery landscapes are a subtype of agricultural landscapes. A winery landscape is an area in which the dominant land use or indigenous vegetation consists of extensive grapevine crops, that is, vineyards and/or areas covered by wild grapevines; where a specific wine culture has evolved, or grapes constitute an important part of the local diet. In this paper, winery landscapes are studied at two levels: typological (as a repeatable, specific type of area with precisely defined characteristic features), and regional (regional areas that are unique and individual). The authors analyze the evolution of winery landscapes over time and describe their natural and historical aspects. A wide range of factors were taken into consideration: historical and political, socio-economic, cultural and religious influences, as well as the natural environmental background. This paper aims to describe the evolution of winery landscapes in Europe and beyond by considering the Mediterranean Basin, Asia Minor, Transcaucasia, and Central Asia.

Opis:
The Mediterranean Diet has long been regarded as one of the promising strategies for the prevention of cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease. Aim: This study aimed to determine the association between adherence to a MedDiet and the risk of cognitive impairment (CI) among the elderly in Morocco. Due to their complete data, a sample of 172 (56.4% men) from 237 subjects were included in our study. Cognitive functions were assessed by the MMSE test (Mini-Mental State Examination). Adherence to a MedDiet was assessed using a validated questionnaire based on weekly consumption of the seven main MedDiet foods: non-refined cereals, potatoes, fruits (whole or in juice), vegetables (cooked or as salad), legumes, fish, olive oil, and three foods consumed less frequently in a MedDiet: red meats, poultry, and full-fat dairy products. A binary logistic regression was performed, with cognitive function as the dependent variable MedDiet adherence score as well as the aliment consumption frequency associated with CI in the bivariate analysis as an independent variable. The binary logistic regression adjusted for confounding variables revealed that adherence to a MedDiet is not associated with a lower risk of cognitive impairment (ORa= 0.928; 95% CI; [0.831-1.037]) (ORa: Adjusted Odd Ratio; 95% CI: 95% of Confidence Interval). However, only Olive Oil consumption was a protective factor against CI (ORa= 0.882; 95% CI; [0.815-0.953]).

Research background: Tourism sector is considered as a driving force of economic development and understanding factors that deter the flow of tourists and hinder its development, which is essential for all actors involved in this industry. Purpose of the article: The purpose of the article is to investigate the impact of rule of law, corruption, and terrorism on tourism in 14 coastal states of the Mediterranean Sea based on the United Nations classification. Methods: The short and long-run relationships among the rule of law, corruption, terrorism and tourism are respectively analyzed through Dumitrescu and Hurlin causality test and LM bootstrap cointegration test taking notice of the presence of heterogeneity and cross-sectional dependence. Findings & value added: The causality analysis reveals that control of corruption has a significant influence on tourism only in the short run. The cointegration analysis uncovers that terrorism negatively affects the tourism in Albania, Algeria, Egypt, and Tunisia, but improvements in corruption also positively affect the tourism in Albania, Algeria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece and Italy. Last, the rule of law has a positive impact on tourism in Egypt, Greece, and Israel. In this context, the rule of law can also be a key factor for tourism development via combat with corruption and terrorism. Based on some unique characteristics, the Mediterranean region has consolidated its position as the world's leading tourist destination, but to maintain this competitive position, it is crucial to recognize and adopt strategies that respond to all key challenges faced by this sector.

The Oxfordian ammonite group Passendorferiinae (known as "Mediterranean perisphinctids") forms a group of perisphinctids characterized by strongly evolute serpenticone coiling and subcircular to subquadrate whorl section, and forms a lateral divergent branch of the main stem Perisphinctidae. They originated probably from Late Callovian Grossouvriinae (Alligaticeras) and spread mainly in the Mediterranean (Tethyan) Province along the southern margin of Tethys, occasionally reaching the outer areas of epicontinental platforms. Their particular morphological features make them somewhat homoeomorphic with Tethyan Kimmeridgian Nebrodites. The phyletic link might be represented by the genus Geyssantia Meléndez, known from the Late Oxfordian Planula Chronozone. Separate biogeographic distribution in relation to the Perisphinctinae might reflect a progressive differentiation of western Tethyan faunas at the Callovian-Oxfordian boundary and at the onset of the Middle Oxfordian Transversarium Chronozone. Their rapid evolution gives them a biostratigraphic value similar to that of the Perisphinctinae. At the turn of the Middle-Late Oxfordian they gave rise to early Ataxioceratinae (Orthosphinctes), which replaced the Perisphinctinae in epicontinental areas, and colonised the marginal epicontinental blocks of northern Tethys. The taxonomy of this group is based upon the recognition of sexual dimorphism, using a single generic and specific name for both (M) and (m), and hence rejecting the use of former subgeneric ames for both dimorphs. A new species within this line: Passendorferia nodicostata sp. nov. from the Plicatilis Biozone (Paturattensis Subbiozone) is defined and described for the first time.

This article analyses recent trends in coastal urban growth, mainly prompted by tourism in its various forms, experienced along the Spanish Mediterranean coasts and the Canary Islands, with a special focus on the Balearic Islands. The article seeks to measure and compare the differential rates of urban growth between island and continental coasts during the period 1990-2006, coinciding with the latest major economic growth cycle in Southwestern Europe, and where real estate and tourism activities have played a central role. The results suggest that the degree of urbanization in island coastal regions analysed is lower than that of mainland coastal regions.

The Mediterranean Sea has seen an increase of ports hosting cruise ships during the first fifteen years of the 21st century. The increase in cruise ship presence in Mediterranean ports is associated with the dynamism of cruise traffic in recent years, with an average annual growth of 7.45% for cruise passengers worldwide during the period of 1990-2015. Cruise traffic is a maritime business that is primarily composed of two elements, maritime affairs and tourism. This article focuses on the maritime component. With the growth of the cruise industry, cruise lines have been forced to seek new ports to meet demand in an attempt to create differentiated products based on the ports that compose the itinerary. The itinerary system of cruise traffic makes the cruise ports depend on one another to design an itinerary. This feature results in both complex geographic relationships in the design of a cruise itinerary and complex competitive/cooperative relationships between ports. The aim of this article is to present the hierarchic picture of a sample of 29 cruise ports in the Western Mediterranean region during the period of 2000-2015. To achieve this goal, a port size classification is proposed and a shift-share analysis at the inter- and intra-group size level is applied. Moreover, concentration measures are used to determine the changes in the levels of market concentration. Furthermore, a dynamic model is proposed to determine the competitive or cooperative relationships between cruise ports. The proposed model is applied to the largest ports with data from the 2001-2015 period.

We are currently in the process of formally dealing with the warm water species diversity affiliated with the family Papposphaeraceae. In this paper we describe a new genus and species Ventimolina stellata based on material from the Andaman Sea (type locality) and the NW Mediterranean.

Opis:
The European Neighborhood Policy (ENP) was developed in 2004, with the objective of avoiding the emergence of new dividing lines between the enlarged EU and our neighbors and strengthening the prosperity, stability and security of all. In order to realize the vision of building an increasingly closer relationship with our neighbors, and a zone of stability, security and prosperity for all, the EU and each ENP partner reach agreement on reform objectives across a wide range of fields within certain ‘common’ areas such as cooperation on political and security issues, to economic and trade matters, mobility, environment, integration of transport and energy networks or scientific and cultural cooperation. The EU provides financial and technical assistance to support the implementation of these objectives, in support of partners’ own efforts. During the Barcelona Conference in November 1995, the foreign ministers of the 15 member states and the 12 TCMs, from then on ‘partners’ (Maghreb and Mashrek countries including the Palestinian Authority as well as Israel, Turkey, Malta and Cyprus) officially approved the principle of the creation of a Euro-Mediterranean free-trade economic zone. This article shows how this cooperation is connected with The European Neighborhood Policy.
