Opis:
Maps of administrative districts may be regarded as one of the popular publications in Poland. These are commonly available and meant in the main for tourists; typical range of scale is 1:50 000–1:120 000. Since there are no standards of these maps, users remarks and views can be useful guidelines at the map designing. An opinion poll is a way to learn about them. Question of the general character, conditions of use, scale, scope of content, inset maps, descriptive part with additional components and layout were included in the inquiry form. In the presented paper, respondents’ opinions are discussed (for instance, transportation and touristic contents seems the most important) with a quantitative summary.

Opis:
In the modern world of mass information being reduced to colourful images, maps have the chance to become a medium that transmits important information in an attractive format. Due to time pressure, many cartographic publications that have a short life span on the internet contain a lot of methodological errors. Viewers receive an image that is hard to interpret, incomplete or even incorrect. The author aims to summarize and classify the cartographic content of social media, while bearing methodology, the role of the cartographer and users’ reactions to that content in mind. The springboard to online discussion is mainly a map topic. Their design or methodology is of little interest in most cases. This may be due to insufficient knowledge of how forms (their correctness and quality) shape messages. Hence the role of the cartographer is important, what can be seen – among methodological remarks – as one of conclusions. It seems that map-makers are becoming more expert, and are guiding map lovers and amateur cartographers towards creating good, effective and elegant maps.

Opis:
W artykule przedstawiono kilka zagadnień związanych z redagowaniem map w podręcznikach akademickich na przykładzie sześciu wybranych publikacji Wydawnictwa Naukowego PWN.
The article critically discusses cartographic contents of six geography handbooks published by Wydawnictwo Naukowe PWN (Polish Scientific Publishers). The publishing house, founded in 1951 specializes in academic handbooks of various disciplines. In the last few years a change of printing technology and map preparation for reproduction becomes evident. The text presents the description of some maps: its scale, projection - the cartographic graticule. It turns out that on handbook maps the scale is often omitted - linear scale is more common. Occasionally the projection chosen is a wrong one, e.g. Mercator's projection for presentation of meteorological stations in the world (fig. 3). Text explanations are often separated from the legend symbols, the relation "figure-ground" is omitted (land - water in many maps) (fig. 1) and graphic variables misapplied. The aim of the article is to present most common errors and failings, which can be easily avoided with the contemporary technology of cartographic illustration design.

Opis:
W artykule opisano problemy związane z badaniem dokładności map izopletowych oraz przedstawiono źródła błędów na takich mapach.
The isopleth method is rarely used as a presentation method in cartography. There are several reasons for that. One of the main causes is cartographers' distrust towards isopleths, which bases on opinions of many cartographic authorities (Eckert, Imhof, Salishchev). The main dilemma is whether it is possible to represent discontinuous phenomena with isolines. The fact that this method is highly labor-consuming also limited its popularity. Furthermore, there are no clear, acknowledged criteria for preparation of isopleth maps. In order to establish how isopleth maps should be prepared one has to determine a universal tool for their evaluation. Volumetric criterion proposed by J.Moscibroda (1999) seems to be the optimal solution. In short, it preserves unity of a statistic volume of an isopleth map with the volume of continuous choropleth. Application of a criterion of behavior of phenomenon's statistical volume helps to trace down the sources of errors, which appear on traditional isopleth maps. The research made it possible to determine three basic factors which cause errors to appear. They are: the type of basic space units, location and number of reference points and the method of interpolation. Knowing the origin of errors and being able to evaluate them on isopleth maps provides a basis for research on how to improve the methods of their elaboration.

Opis:
The author’s objective is to present the role of base contents for a statistical map and determine its desired features which would influence optimum perception of the main contents of the map. The article consists of two main parts. The first part discusses selection of cartographic projection. Presented recommendations could be summarized in a short conclusion that application of equal-area projections is the optimum solution. It results from the necessity of preserving correct spatial relations during the perception of the thematic map contents. It is recommended to show cartographic graticule on statistical maps, for it helps to recognize geometrical attributes of the map and plays the localizing role. The second part of the article concentrates on the issue of selection of base contents’ elements on statistical maps. Such selection depends on the method of presentation of the thematic contents of the map. Because of that the optimum contents of the map is discussed in the context of basic cartographic presentation methods, i.e. the dot method, the choropleth method, the diagram method and the isoline method. The role of base elements in the process of reading of the main contents is also underlined. It is shown that it is not only the localizing role. Including additional elements of base contents facilitates understanding of the spatial distribution of the phenomenon which is the main topic of the map. The article encourages extension of the contents of statistical maps by additional elements of contents, which, while keeping correct spatial relations, can improve the efficiency of map use.

Opis:
Map perception consists of numerous processes of information processing, taking place almost simultaneously at different levels and stages which makes it conditioned by many factors. In the article, a review of processes related to the perception of a map as well as levels and properties of perception which impact its course and the nature of information obtained from a map is presented. The most important process constituting the basis of a map perception is a visual search (eye movement). However, as stated based on the studies, the process is individual depending on the purpose of map perception and it may be guided by its image (visual search guidance) or by the knowledge of users (cognitive search guidance). Perception can take place according to various schemes - “local-to-global” or “global-to-local”, or in accordance with the guided search theory. Perception is divided into three processes: perceiving, distinguishing and identifying, which constitute the basis to interpret and understand a map. They are related to various degrees of intellectual involvement of the user and to various levels of questions concerning the relations between signs and their content. Identification involves referring a sign to its explanation in the legend. Interpretation means transformation of the initial information collected from the map into derivative information in which two basic types of understanding take place: deductive and inductive. Identification of geographical space objects on the map and the interpretation of its content constitute the basis to introduce information into memory structures. In the brain a resource of information is generated called geographic knowledge or spatial representation (mental map) which may have a double nature - verbal or pictorial. An important feature of mental maps is organization of spatial information into hierarchical structures, e.g. grouping towns into regions as well as deformation of spatial relations between individual elements and their groups independent of consciousness. The process of map perception depends on various factors, including the nature, scale and map content, the degree of its complexity and compliance of the map language with cartographic principles. Important factors also include cartographic competencies of the recipient of a map conditioned by age, education and the task type. It is related to types of information about geographical space: semantic - concerning spatial references of particular objects and structural - connected to relations between elements of a map. Such relations may be determined at the regional or global level, they may concern qualitative or quantitative features as well as changes in time. Nowadays, an important factor impacting the nature and consequences of map perception is the situation in which the process occurs. Traditionally, static and unchanging maps are used under other conditions than computer maps and navigation systems, making it possible to freely zoom in and zoom out the image and its spatial scope as well as to quickly go from one image to another. Today, when the predominant way of map use is their perception on the screens of navigation systems, processes of map perception and factors conditioning it are also significant to understand the process. In the analysis of map perception, also tasks which are implemented using the map and the nature of information obtained by the map user must be taken into account.

Intriguingly, there is no analysis of maps used as a stimuli in these experiments. In order to fill existing scarcity, this paper presents the analysis of the content of four journals affiliated by the International Cartographic Association. Four features (map medium, reactiveness, method of cartographic presentation, users familiarity with the depicted data) are described based on 103 papers presenting empirical studies. Types of maps were identified in scope of every feature. Most frequently used ones are displayed on the screen, non-interactive, depicting qualitative data and area unfamiliar for the participant of the study.

The purpose of this article is to present a mental model of knowledge as a concept map as an input to knowledge management (KM) investigations. This article’s extended knowledge concept map can serve as a resource where the investigation, development, or application of knowledge would be served with a broad mental model of knowledge. Previously unrelated concepts are related; knowledge concepts can sometimes be expressed as a range, i.e., certainty related states: view, opinion, sentiment, persuasion, belief, and conviction. Extrathesis is identified as a potential skill level higher than synthesis, and associated with the concepts: discovery, institution, insight (the event), revelation, or illumination that precedes innovation. Qualitative methods were used to gather and document concepts. System engineering and object analysis methods were applied to define and relate concepts. However, the theoretical sampling and theoretical saturation methods applied do not guarantee all appropriate concepts have been identified. Given the breadth, depth, and dimensionality of concepts of knowledge, later researchers may add additional concepts. This article provides evidence of additional things people know, an alternative to psychology’s acquaintanceship, understanding and placement of newer categorizations of knowledge in relation to older ones, and suggests that ranges for knowledge terms exist. This article extends the 2015 paper on this topic by: 1) taking a deeper look into epistemological terms and relationships, 2) providing contextual definitions, 3) suggesting extrathesis as an idea beyond synthesis, 4) updating the concept map; and 5) providing new insight on the overloaded knows including adding an eleventh know. It provides a much more solid basis for KM investigations than typical presentations, providing a broad understanding of knowledge that is beneficial.

We consider linear and metric self-maps on vertex sets of finite combinatorial trees. Linear maps are maps which preserve intervals between pairs of vertices whereas metric maps are maps which do not increase distances between pairs of vertices. We obtain criteria for a given linear or a metric map to be a positive (negative) under some orientation of the edges in a tree, we characterize trees which admit maps with Markov graphs being paths and prove that the converse of any partial functional digraph is isomorphic to a Markov graph for some suitable map on a tree.

W artykule przedstawiono zawartość zespołów, zbiorów i kolekcji map, planów urbanistycznych, rysunków architektonicznych i technicznych oraz grafik stanowiących zasób kartograficzny Archiwum Głównego Akt Dawnych w Warszawie.
Cartographic collection of the Main Archives of Old Records (AGAD) in Warsaw consists of atlases, urban maps, architectural and technical drawings and graphic art kept in the Department of Cartography and in departments which collect the documents of authorities, offices and institutions of the Republic as well as family records. The collection kept in the Department of Cartography is divided into seventeen groups, sets and collections which are concisely described in the article. The Archives' cartographic collection is dated between 1579 and 1974. Among its maps and architectural drawings are multicolored hand drawn documents, mainly large scale land property maps and urban plans from 18th and 19th centuries. The oldest map in the collection, presenting East Phrysia is a copperplate engraving from 1579. The oldest hand drawn document is the plan of the manor and garden in Ujazdów near Warsaw from 1606, authored by Alessandro Albertini. Cartographic items from the time of the Commonwealth of Both the Nations collected in the archive concern mainly the territories of the Crown rather than the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Those from the period after the partitioning (1794) cover mainly the terrains taken over by Prussia as a result of the 2nd and 3rd partitioning, and later the territories of the Duchy of Warsaw and the Kingdom of Poland in the borders established in 1815 by the Vienna Congress. Atlases constitute the least numerous group.
