Pultusk meteorite
Opis:
Mössbauer measurements of one sample of the Pułtusk meteorite were performed at room temperature (300 K) and at temperature of liquid nitrogen (80 K). Following mineralogical phases were identified in Mössbauer spectra: olivine, pyroxene, troilite, kamacite, taenite, and a doublet associated with ferric iron. The differences in the percentage of spectral areas obtained for all subspectra are very small. It means that in the range of these temperatures the Debye–Waller factor is the same for all mineralogical phases present in the investigated sample.

In the present work the phase constitution and magnetic ordering of the magnetocaloric LaFe11.0Co0.8(Si0.4Al0.6)1.2 alloy in the as-cast state and after annealing at 1323 K for 1 h (in case of ribbons) and 49 days (in case of bulk) were studied. For bulk and ribbon samples in as-cast state three crystalline phases were identified: dominant ferromagnetic alfa-Fe, minor ferromagnetic La(Fe,Co)Si and traces of paramagnetic La(Fe,Si)13 phase. Appropriate heat treatment resulted in the evolution of phase constitution of the alloy, where two crystalline phases were developed: the dominant paramagnetic La(Fe,Si)13 phase and a minor fraction of the ferromagnetic alfa-Fe for both bulk and ribbon samples.

The spin reorientation phenomena (changes from planar to axial spin arrangements) have been studied extensively by a narrow step temperature scanning in the neighbourhood of the spin reorientation temperature. From the analysis of the spectra it was deduced that in the region of transition each subspectrum was split into two Zeeman sextets, which were characterized by different hyperfine magnetic fields and quadrupole splittings. A consistent way of describing the Mössbauer spectra in the wide range of temperatures was proposed. The composition and temperature dependencies of hyperfine interaction parameters and subspectra contributions were derived from experimental spectra. The transition temperatures were determined for all the compounds studied.

Opis:
This paper reports the results of 57Fe Mössbauer study of stilpnomelane K0.6Fe6(Si8Al)(O,OH)27 .2H2O from Żółkiewka (Lower Silesia, Poland). Stilpnomelane in paragenesis with chlorite, tourmaline, claevelandite and zeolites has been found in granite pegmatites in quarries at Żółkiewka. The samples of naturally weathered stilpnomelane and chlorite from the same fragment of rock were also studied. The Mössbauer spectrum of an untreated sample could be fitted to two Fe2+ doublets and two Fe3+ doublets. The Fe2+ doublets have similar isomer shifts, but they distinctly differ in values of quadrupole splittings. Ferric iron, octahedrally coordinated occurs in three different environments represented by two doublets. The first of them, assigned to combined M1 + M2 positions and the second one assigned to M3 site with parameters IS = 0.36 mm/s and QS = 2.07 mm/s is visible in the spectra up to 880°C. This doublet is characteristic of stilpnomelane and can be regarded as a "fingerprint" of this mineral. After heating at 200°C, the relative content of Fe2+, ÓFe2+/ÓFe, decreases to 0.22 what means a 50% decrease in comparison to the initial value observed in the untreated sample. At about 1000°C, complete breakdown of the stilpnomelane structure takes place and the Mössbauer spectrum consists of two sextets and two ferric doublets. Abnormally high content of Fe2+ in naturally weathered stilpnomelane (0.70) comparing to the untreated sample of stilpnomelane (0.45) indicates that the sample had to be subjected to hydrothermal processes operating locally. Almost the same contents of divalent iron and hyperfine parameters of Fe2+ and Fe3+ doublets in weathered stilpnomelane and associated chlorite suggest that the process of chlorite transformation into stilpnomelane seems to be very probable.

Small particles of magnetite, i.e. 7.5, 13.4 and 14.1 nm in diameter, were obtained by the method of co-precipitation. The crystal structure and size distributions were determined by means of transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The magnetic properties of the nanoparticles were tested by Mössbauer spectroscopy within the temperature range from 3 K to room temperature (RT). The Mössbauer study of magnetic nanoparticles reveals relaxation behaviour related to the existence of the superparamagnetic phase. The blocking temperature depends on the sizes of the nanoparticles and the ammonia concentration.

A comparison of results related to spin reorientation phenomena obtained for Gd- and Th-substituted compounds is presented in this paper. Spin reorientation phenomena (changes from planar to axial spin arrangements) have been studied extensively by a narrow step temperature scanning in the neighbourhood of the spin reorientation temperature, TSR. From the analysis of Mössbauer spectra, it was deduced that in the region of transition each subspectrum was split into two Zeeman sextets, which were characterised by different hyperfine magnetic fields and quadrupole splittings. A consistent way of fitting the spectra in the wide range of temperatures was proposed. The composition and temperature dependencies of hyperfine interaction parameters and subspectra contributions were derived from fits and the transition temperatures were determined for all the compounds studied. DSC studies proved that the spin reorientations were accompanied by thermal effects for all compositions of the Gd- and for x = 0.5 of the Th-series. Transformation enthalpy and TSR were determined from these studies and the two-stage character of transition was confirmed. Magnetic spin arrangement diagrams for R = Th and Gd series were constructed and compared using combined data obtained with both methods.

The paper presents the investigation of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) dedicated to hyperthermia application. The crystal structure and size distributions have been determined by means of transmission electron microscope (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Magnetic properties of the nanoparticles were tested by Mössbauer spectroscopy together with calorimetric experiments. The Mössbauer spectroscopic study of MNPs revealed the existence of a superparamagnetic phase. The relative contribution of the relaxing component to the total spectrum at room temperature was about 10%. The heating effect of these MNPs under alternating magnetic field was examined. The temperature increase has reached 5°C in 10 min. The preliminary temperature rise suggests that the investigated materials are applicable for hyperthermia.

Opis:
Temperature dependence of asymmetry as well as isomer shift and quadrupole splitting values of Mössbauer spectra of trivalent iron complexes coordinated to porphyrin ligands such as octaethylporphyrin, monoazaethioporphyrin, diazaoctaethylporphyrin and phthalacyanine is discussed in this paper. All the above mentioned complexes have the chloride axial ligand at the fifth coordination site. Different temperature changes of asymmetry and other parameters of Mössbauer spectra of these complexes can be correlated with a number of methine bridges CH substituted by nitrogen atoms in the porphyrin macrocycle. The form of this asymmetry is such that the higher-energy component of the doublet is more broadened than the lower-energy one, while the areas (intensities) under each of two components are the same. The most distinct asymmetry is observed at room temperature. When temperature is decreasing, the spectrum becomes successively more symmetrical and at liquid helium temperature linewidths of both components of the quadrupole splitting are very close one another. The Mössbauer spectrum of the FeCl-monoazaethioporphyrin complex exhibits reversed asymmetry at liquid helium temperature in comparison with the spectra of the remaining complexes i.e. the lower-energy component of the doublet is slightly more broadened than the higher-energy one. The spin-spin and spinlattice relaxation mechanisms in the context of quantum mechanically mixed spin states S = 5/2 + 3/2 of FeIII ions are considered as a source of the observed asymmetry.

The Mössbauer spectra show a gradual decrease of quadrupole splitting and line width values of an Fe3+ doublet with increasing annealing temperature. Rather unexpected feature of these spectra for an Fe2+ doublet is a considerable increase of the line width with progressive crystallinity and a simultaneous decrease of both quadrupole splitting and isomer shift values. Changes of the hyperfine parameters as a function of the annealing temperature appeared as sensitive indicators of the thermal recrystallization process of metamict davidite similar to metamict silicates.

Both fully metamict and crystalline gadolinite show divalent iron exclusively in octahedral coordination. Changes of the amplitudes ratio of high energy to low energy absorption peaks from Fe2+ quadrupole doublets are strictly correlated with calculated absorbed alpha-dose and the metamictization stages of the gadolinite specimens. In this respect, one of the samples is in conflict with the estimated radiation dose based on age and radionuclide concentrations. In this case, Mössbauer spectroscopy shows that the sample had to be naturally annealed over geologic time.

Opis:
The preliminary results of 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) of fully metamict samarskite dated at ~1500 Ma, which absorbed -dose of 6.5 × 1017 α-decay mg–1, are reported after one-hour annealing at 673, 873, 1173 and 1373 K in argon atmosphere. Metamict minerals contain radioactive elements that degrade their crystal structures over geological time. All the Mössbauer spectra obtained can be fitted to two quadrupole doublets assigned to Fe2+ and Fe3+ in octahedral positions. The relative contribution of Fe2+ (Fe2+/Fe) reaches a minimum of 0.10 at 1173 K.

In this paper, the results of the complex examination of the 42CrMo4 steel samples are presented. The samples were taken from the metallurgical forging prepared for the production of the wind turbine main shaft. The samples underwent Mössbauer spectroscopic analysis, as well as the measurement of its mechanical characteristics such as hardness and strength are analysed. Conversion electron Mössbauer spectrometry confirmed phase purity and isotropy of the investigated 42CrMo4 steel. The method provided accurate results, proving Mössbauer spectrometry to be an effective tool for the wind turbine main shaft analysis.

This paper presents the results of the study on structure and magnetic properties of the perovskite-type (BiFeO3)x-(BaTiO3)1-x solid solutions. The samples differing in the chemical composition (x = 0.9, 0.8, and 0.7) were produced according to the conventional solid-state sintering method from the mixture of powders. Moreover, three different variants of the fabrication process differing in the temperatures and soaking time were applied. The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD), Mössbauer spectroscopy (MS), and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) were collected and compared for the set of the investigated materials. The structural transformation from rhombohedral to cubic symmetry was observed for the samples with x = 0.7. With increasing of BaTiO3 concentration Mössbauer spectra become broadened refl ecting various confi gurations of atoms around 57Fe probes. Moreover, gradual decreasing of the average hyperfi ne magnetic fi eld and macroscopic magnetization were observed with x decreasing.

57Fe Mössbauer spectra of YbFe4Al8 of the tetragonal ThMn12 structure have been investigated. Mössbauer measurements at the lowest temperatures yield information on the iron population in three crystallographic sites 8f, 8j and 8i available for Fe atoms. The obtained results indicate on the coexistence of magnetically ordered and paramagnetic-like Fe moments within antiferromagnetic phase of YbFe4Al8. The MS measurements show that the onset of short range antiferromagnetic interaction in the Fe sublattice takes place at 220 K.

From 57Fe Mössbauer spectrum of FeTe2 taken in high external magnetic field (B = 4.6 T), the sign of electric field gradient was determined as negative, with an asymmetry parameter of 0.2. A comparison of these data with results of calculation of the electric field gradient within point charge model suggests the lattice character of electric field gradient with some contribution from covalency effects. The effective magnetic field acting on 57Fe is less than the applied, which points out the diamagnetic Fe+2 state of iron. This "electronic state" is in a contradiction to Fe+3 "charge state" concluded from 125Te experiments on 3d transition metal ditellurides as well as from 57Fe quadrupole splitting and isomer shift.

In this work the compositional dependence of hyperfine interactions and magnetoelectric coupling in (BiFeO3)x-(BaTiO3)1–x solid solutions where x = 0.5–0.9 fabricated from commercial BaTiO3 in terms of the solid-state sintering method at various temperatures and over different time periods is described. In general, as the content of BaTiO3 increases, a decrease in the hyperfine magnetic field (Bhf) at 57Fe nuclei was observed. However, for samples exhibiting lower homogeneity in which the ions of Bi3+ and Fe3+ are replaced by Ba2+ and Ti4+ with lower probability, higher values of Bhf are obtained. For the sample where x = 0.6 that exhibits the coexistence of rhombohedral, regular and tetragonal phases, the highest value of the αME coefficient (3.57 mV/A) was observed, which is more than three times higher when compared to the hitherto published results.

The microstructure and ordering of alfa-FeCo phase of the nanocrystalline Fe83 xCoxNb3B13Cu1 (x = 6, 25 or 41.5) alloys were investigated. We have stated that á-FeCo phase is atomically ordered in the Fe83 xCoxNb3B13Cu1 (x = 25 or 41.5) samples crystallized by the heat treatment in a furnace. However, after flash annealing (by current or laser) that phase is disordered. Moreover, we have found that Co concentration in the crystalline alfa-FeCo phase strongly depends on Co content in the as-quenched ribbons. The annealing conditions influence also the grain diameter of the crystalline phase. In the nanocrystalline alloys obtained by a flash annealing of the amorphous ribbons finer grains are present.

Opis:
Performed investigations showed that the magnetic properties of the Fe2.4V0.6Al alloy markedly depend on the degree of atomic order of its cubic structure. The atomically disordered alloy with A2 (bcc) type structure exhibits ferromagnetic properties. Its Mössbauer spectra can be described by the hyperfine field distribution connected with various local environments of Fe atoms. Alloys with B2 (sc) and DO3 (fcc) type structure do not exhibit magnetic transition above 4.2 K. High values of the magnetization and its strongly non-linear variation with magnetic field intensity in a wide temperature range suggest the presence of magnetic iron clusters in these alloys. Superparamagnetic relaxation times of the order of 10-9 s and 5 × 10-8 s correspond to the largest magnetic clusters with a magnetic moment of 4 × 103 žB in B2 and 104 žB in DO3-type structure, respectively. Mössbauer spectra of these alloys confirm lack of the magnetic order and also suggest the presence of the Fe magnetic clusters with those relaxation times. It was shown that the increase of atomic order of the crystal structure causes formation of the Fe magnetic clusters and disappearing of the magnetic order.

The room temperature Mössbauer spectra of 57Fe were measured for numerous dilute iron-based alloys Fe1-xDx (D = Al, Co, Cr, Mn, Mo, Ni, Os, Pt, Re, Ru, Ta, Ti, V, W, Zn), annealed at 1270 K for 2 h before the measurements. The spectra were analyzed using the Hesse–Rübartsch method in order to determine the mean hyperfi ne magnetic fi eld at the 57Fe nuclei as a function of concentration x of the minority component of the alloy. As the binary alloys are one-faze solid solutions of an element D in iron, a linear relationship between and x is observed. The result supports the suggestion that Mössbauer spectroscopy is a useful tool for the study of dissolution of different elements in iron.

X-ray diffraction measurements and Mössbauer spectroscopy with and without external magnetic field parallel to beam direction have been performed for Fe1-xNix (x = 0.25, 0.30, 0.35) alloys. The compositions of the studied alloys were chosen in order to cover the concentration range where the fcc - bcc structural transformation appears, as well as where single phase fcc Fe-Ni alloys exhibit the Invar phenomena. In the second, the low field component of the hyperfine magnetic field is ordered antiferomagnetically (or disordered) while the high field component is aligned by an external magnetic field. In order to determine the mean values of cosine of the angle between teta-rays direction and hyperfine field vector of iron, (), a monochromatic circularly polarized Mössbauer source (MCPMS) was used. The analysis of the MCPMS results show that the shapes of the measured spectra can be explained by single values of .

Opis:
Magnesium oxide (MgO) is one of the most important raw materials in many branches of industry. Magnesium oxide is a popular refractory raw material because of its high refractoriness and high resistance to basic slags and environment. In many cases, use of MgO is limited by its properties, especially the presence of secondary phases like iron oxides. The amount and distribution of iron oxides can strongly infl uence the technological properties of MgO and depend on the manufacturing method, particularly the heat-treatment process. The aim of the study was to evaluate the infl uence of the heat-treatment process on amount and distribution of iron ions in a magnesium oxide lattice. The 57Fe Mössbauer effect measurements of fused and sintered magnesium oxide samples doped by the iron oxide were conducted. Investigation reveals in both cases the presence of Fe2+ as well as Fe3+ ions. Fe2+ ions occupy Mg2+ octahedral sites in the MgO lattice, whereas the Fe3+ ions are located in highly distorted octahedral coordination. The amount of Fe2+ varies from around 66% for fused samples to 30% for sintered samples.

The results of a combined study of bornite with Mossbauer spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and DC magnetometry are reported. The orthorhombic crystallographic structure of the mineral is observed at 15 K and 300 K. It exhibits an increase of the orthorhombic distortion with decreasing temperature. Magnetic susceptibility shows a Curie-Weiss like behaviour between 230 K and 380 K corresponding to the effective magnetic moment of 7.2(3) mi B per formula unit. The material undergoes a transition to an antiferromagnetic-like state at 75 K. Mossbauer spectra at the paramagnetic range are doublets with a small quadrupole splitting and the isomer shift corresponding to a high spin Fe3+ state. Upon magnetic ordering, a coexistence of the paramagnetic doublet with a broadened magnetic sextet is observed indicating an inhomogeneous character of the magnetic transition. The hyperfine field of 350 kOe at 4.2 K is much lower than that observed for a high spin Fe3+ in oxides (510 kOe) which is attributed to covalence effects and a possible copper contribution to the effective magnetic moment of the compound.

Microstructure and thermomagnetic characteristics of the amorphous Fe51Co12Si16B8Mo5P8 alloy in the as-quenched state and after 1 h of annealing at 573 K and 773 K are studied. The structural investigations performed by Mössbauer spectroscopy and X-ray diffractometry confirmed the amorphous structure of the analysed materials. An increase in the annealing temperature up to 773 K does not lead to crystallization of the amorphous alloy. Only structural rearrangement that causes changes in the topological short-range order and annealing out of free volume is observed. This behaviour was confi rmed by modifications of the shapes of hyperfi ne field distributions derived from the corresponding Mössbauer spectra of the investigated alloys. The Curie temperatures of the as-quenched and annealed Fe51Co12Si16B8Mo5P8 alloy at 573 and 773 K are 400, 405 and 421 K, respectively.

In this work the hyperfine interactions in (BiFeO3)x-(BaTiO3)1-x solid solutions with relation to their structural properties have been investigated. X-ray diffraction, Mössbauer spectroscopy and magnetoelectric effect measurements have been used for studies of sintered (BiFeO3)x-(BaTiO3)1-x solid solutions with x = 0.9, 0.8 and 0.7. With increasing contents of BaTiO3, the structural transformation from rhombohedral to cubic was observed. The weakening of the hyperfine magnetic fields accompanied by this transformation. On the other hand, the increasing amount of BaTiO3 caused an increase of the magnetoelectric effect.

The paper is aimed at the description of the newly developed Mössbauer spectrometer MsAa-3. The spectrometer MsAa-3 consists of a high quality gamma-ray spectrometer including either a proportional gas detector head or a scintillation detector head, a transducer driving system including the transducer, data storage system, and data communication system based on the TCP/IP protocol. Additionally, the Michelson-Morley interferometer is provided for precise calibration of the transducer velocity. The spectrometer is equipped with an integrated simple temperature controller. All the essential functions are remotely controlled over the TCP/IP link allowing for the spectrometer set-up as the stand-alone unit in the computer network, e.g. on the Internet. External gamma-ray detectors or external complete nuclear blocks could be used as well. The spectrometer is equipped with software allowing for setting all the functions, to perform on-line control, and retrieve data. The Mössbauer data processing software MOSGRAF is enclosed as well. The latter software allows for the calculation of the variety of velocity reference functions.

Electron configuration of Fe(I) ions in these complexes is (dxy)2(dxz ,dyz)4(dz 2)1. The [Fe(I)(MAEP•)]- structure is stable only in solution and it is transferred into Fe(I)(MAEP) in the solid state. Mössbauer parameters for all products of the reduction reaction are given.

Opis:
Doping with Lewis acid is a new method for improving solution processibility of conductive polyaniline. We report here detailed Mössbauer spectroscopy studies of polyaniline complexed with Lewis acids containing Mössbauer active nuclei, namely SnCl4 and FeCl3. Films of Lewis acid doped polyaniline cast from nitromethane solutions show stoichiometries of PANI(MeCln)1(CH3NO2)1 (where n = 3 or 4, Me denotes Sn or Fe and PANI denotes one aniline repeat unit), which means that both types of polyaniline nitrogens (imine and amine) participate in the complexation reaction, and one solvent molecule is introduced in the polymer matrix per one Lewis acid molecule. Mössbauer parameters of polyaniline doped with SnCl4 are consistent with hexacoordinated Sn(IV) in an environment of non-equivalent ligands. The spectrum of PANI doped with FeCl3 consists of two doublets with distinctly different Mössbauer parameters, which can be ascribed to two types of complexing sites (amine and imine nitrogens). From the temperature dependence of the isomer shift and the recoil free absorption, we have calculated the Mössbauer lattice temperature, ?m, as probed by both complexing sites, which are 83 K for amine and 126 K for imine sites.

Mössbauer spectra of equilibrated ordinary chondrites consist of two sextets due to magnetically ordered iron present in metallic phases and troilite and two doublets due to paramagnetic iron present in olivines and pyroxenes. The Mössbauer spectral areas of the different mineralogical phases in meteorites are proportional to the number of iron ions present in olivines, pyroxenes, metallic phase and troilite. This property of Mössbauer spectra was the basis for constructing various methods for the classification of ordinary chondrites. Review of these methods will be presented.

The procedure to form a Co deposited onto Rh foil was established using two different electroplating baths: the acid-based buffer (pH 3) containing boric acid, sodium chloride, and saccharin, and the alkaline-based buffer (pH 10) containing hydrazine hydrate and ammonium citrate. The influence of different annealing conditions was investigated. From the results, the best diffusion degree of electrodeposited Co onto the rhodium matrix was obtained in an annealing process performed at 1100°C for 3 h in vacuum over 10-5 hPa.

Opis:
Although the concept of Martian meteorites was not yet known 50 years ago, today there are nearly 400 meteorites in this group. Only five of them were observed falling to Earth, the rest were found many years after their fall. They are all achondrites and, with a few exceptions, they all belong to the SNC (Shergotty-Nakhla-Chassigny) clan. At the end of the last century, the origin of these meteorites was hotly discussed and is intensively studied to this day. There is more and more evidence that their parent body is Mars. The main factor is the age of crystallization of SNC meteorites, repeatedly determined using various methods, mainly isotopic ones. This age does not exceed 2.4 billion years which is much less than the age of the Solar System, i.e. 4.6 billion years. Specific mineral and isotopic composition and proportion of gases trapped in the form of bubbles in the meteorite shock glass, identical in terms of noble gas content to the Martian atmosphere, also clearly points to Mars as the parent body of Martian meteorites. A significant contribution to the study of Martian meteorites is made by investigations carried out using Mössbauer spectroscopy based on iron, to determine the mineral composition of Martian meteorites and to compare the results with those obtained by spectrometers installed on Mars rovers during the MER – Mars Exploration Mission.

Ternary Co-Fe-Ni alloys were prepared from the elemental powders by the mechanical alloying method. Structural properties and hyperfine interactions parameters were determined using X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction proved that during milling Co-Fe-based solid solutions with b.c.c. lattice were formed in the case of Co40Fe40Ni20 and Co50Fe40Ni10 alloys, while for Co52Fe26Ni22 and Co65Fe23Ni12 compositions Co-Ni-based solid solutions with f.c.c. lattice were obtained. Mössbauer spectroscopy revealed similar values of the average hyperfine magnetic fields for all the alloys. These values corresponded to the different surroundings of 57Fe isotopes by Co, Fe and Ni atoms, depending on the chemical composition of the alloy. The possible atomic configurations around 57Fe isotopes were discussed on the basis of the local environment model under the assumption that only the first nearest neighbours contribute to the hyperfine magnetic field at 57Fe site.

Ferromagnetic compounds ErFe11TiHx (x = 0, 1) have been investigated by 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy in the temperature range 20–300 K. Mössbauer spectra were analyzed in terms of a model which takes into account the local environment of Fe atoms on three crystallographic sites (8f, 8j and 8i) and an influence of the random distribution of titanium on the 8i site. The 14 sextets with different intensities have been considered. The temperature dependencies of hyperfine interaction parameters and subspectra contributions were derived from experimental spectra. The hyperfine fields and the isomer shift increasing upon hydrogenation are discussed in terms of the hydrogen-induced Wigner-Seitz unit cell expansion and the s-electrons transfer from Fe atoms to the adjacent hydrogen atoms.

Martensite containing 0.87 wt.% carbon was studied by Mössbauer spectroscopy at temperatures, T = 10, 15, 25, 40 and 78 K and by X-ray diffraction at T = 78 K in the course of 35 days. Samples in the form of 30 mm thick foil of pure carbon martensite with enhanced tetragonality were synthesized applying non-standard technology. The measured by X-rays (c/a - 1) ratio varies within the limits 0.044-0.055 by pulsations with a period of few hours. According to Kurdimov’s model any changes in tetragonality of martensite are fully related to the passage of carbon atoms from Oc to Oa and Ob octahedral sites or vice versa. Pulsations of the central and satellite sextets were observed by Mössbauer spectroscopy. In accordance with the conventional interpretation of satellites, these pulsations result from different spatial distribution of carbon around the Fe atoms in the diffusion process. The data of (c/a - 1) pulsations were used to determine the diffusion coefficient below 78 K. The measured diffusion coefficient of carbon in a-iron below 78 K contradicts the classical approach to the observed temperature dependence. As the temperature is lowered below 78 K, the diffusion constant approaches the nearly temperature-independent value. The low temperature branch is apparently characteristic of a quantum mechanical process dominated by tunnelling in the ground state.

The aim of the study was to characterize the 0.8CaZrO3-0.2CaFe2O4 composite structure with particular emphasis on the role and position of iron in the function of sintering temperature. The paper presents the results of 57Fe Mössbauer effect at room temperature. It was found that the increase of sintering temperature causes an increase in the amount of incorporated iron ions in the CaZrO3-crystal structure. Based on Mössbauer spectroscopy analysis, it was found that three different environments of Fe3+ ions were observed in the obtained materials. Two of them corresponded to CaFe2O4 phase and one was associated with the substitution of Zr4+ by Fe3+ in the CaZrO3 structure.

Structure and hyperfine interactions of amorphous and nanocrystalline FINEMET were investigated by means of Mössbauer spectrometry. It was found that substitution of x iron atoms with aluminum ones causes changes in the properties of both amorphous and nanocrystalline alloys as well as in the structure of individual phases. The reduction of hyperfine magnetic field caused by atom substitution is a non-linear function of x, unlike the linear dependence expected because of dilution. Temperature studies reveal a double magnetic phase transition at 250°C and 330°C as well as point to the variety of phases in the examined material.

The paper presents results of microstructure and magnetic properties studies of Nd8.5Tb1.5Fe83Zr1B6 ribbons obtained by melt-spinning technique. The samples were produced using the rapid cooling of liquid alloy on the copper wheel, by applying three different linear velocities 20, 30, and 35 m/s. The microstructure of obtained ribbons was examined using X-ray diffractometry and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Magnetic measurements were performed using LakeShore vibrating sample magnetometer. The microstructure measurements were used for quantitative and qualitative analysis of phase composition. Basing on results of structure studies combined with magnetic measurements, the infl uence of phase composition on hysteresis loop behavior was described.

In this research, we studied the magnetic phase transition by Mössbauer spectroscopy and using vibrating sample magnetometer for amorphous Fe86–xZr7CrxNb2Cu1B4 (x = 0 or 6) alloys in the as-quenched state and after accumulative annealing in the temperature range 600–750 K. The Mössbauer investigations were carried out at room and nitrogen temperatures. The Mössbauer spectra of the investigated alloys at room temperature are characteristic of amorphous paramagnets and have a form of asymmetric doublets. However, at nitrogen temperature, the alloys behave like ferromagnetic amorphous materials. The two components are distinguished in the spectrum recorded at both room and nitrogen temperatures. The low field component in the distribution of hyperfine field induction shifts towards higher field with the annealing temperature. It is assumed that during annealing at higher temperature, due to diffusion processes, the grains of α-Fe are created in the area corresponding to this component. Both investigated alloys show the invar effect and the decrease of hyperfine field induction after annealing at 600 K for 10 min is observed. It is accompanied by the lowering of Curie temperature.

It was found that cold rolling has a minor effect on the martensitic transformation even at high reductions in the material under investigation. On the other hand, powdering process induces strong martensitic phase transformation, i.e., about 25% of austenite transforms into martensite during powdering. High rolling reductions as well as powdering reduce an average hyperfine magnetic field at iron by about 1 T, while annealing at about 430°C increases this field by about 3 T.

The 57Fe Mössbauer spectra for the iron-based solid solutions Fe0.90Cr0.10 and Fe0.88Cr0.12 were measured at different temperatures ranging from 300 K to 900 K. Analysis of the obtained spectra shows that the distribution of impurity atoms in the two first coordination shells of 57Fe nuclei is not random and it cannot be described by the binomial distribution. Quantitatively, the effects were described in terms of the atomic short-range order (SRO) parameters and the pair-wise interaction energy with the help of a quasi-chemical type formulation introduced by Cohen and Fine. The obtained results reveal strong clustering-type correlations in the studied samples (a predominance of Fe-Fe and Cr-Cr bonds). Moreover, the changes in SRO values observed during thermal processing suggest that the distribution of Cr atoms in an α-iron matrix is strongly temperature dependent.

The subject of the investigations were quasibinary Sc(Fe1-xCux)2 Laves phases in which structural and magnetic properties depend on replacement of Fe atoms by Cu atoms. Powder X-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction measurements carried out at room temperature revealed that samples were a mixture of two phases: the quasibinary Sc(Fe1-xCux)2 compounds with cubic C15 structure and ScCu2 with tetragonal structure. 57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy revealed that the Sc(Fe1-xCux)2 compounds are ferrimagnetic up to an actual concentration xact less than 0.30. A decreasing of mean values of hyperfine magnetic fields was observed. On the basis of analysis of the neutron diffraction spectra the mean values of Fe magnetic moments were determined, considering the component connected with the quasibinary Sc(Fe1-xCux)2 phases. These moments change from 1.45(29) ĘB in the Sc(Fe0.92Cu0.08)2 to 1.18(32)mi B in Sc(Fe0.72Cu0.28)2 phase at 8 K. From the results of independent hyperfine magnetic field on 57Fe probes and magnetic Fe moments measurements, the hyperfine coupling constant in quasibinary ferrimagnetic Sc(Fe1.xCux)2 phases is estimated as equal to 13 T/mi B at room temperature.

The Nd10Fe83Zr1B6 alloy ribbons, prepared by melt-spinning technique, have been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Mossbauer spectroscopy. Magnetic properties were studied by Faraday balance and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). The ribbon samples were produced at various surface velocities of the copper wheel from 10 m/s to 20 m/s. The XRD and Mossbauer spectra analysis have shown that the ribbons consist of the soft magnetic alfa-Fe, hard magnetic Nd2Fe14B and disordered phases. The results showed that a uniform Nd2Fe14B/alfa-Fe nanocomposite structure with fine alfa-Fe grains can be obtained at an optimum velocity of the cooper roll of 20 m/s. The samples produced in these conditions had the best magnetic properties (mi0HC= 0.84 T, mi0MR = 1.05 T, mi0MS = 1.36 T, (BH)max = 160 kJ/m3) with strong exchange coupling between the hard magnetic Nd2Fe14B and soft magnetic mi-Fe phases. The simple co-precipitation method was used to prepare AgxFeO2 delafossite with non-stoichiometric silver concentration in the range of x = 0.05–1. The obtained material was investigated using X-ray powder diffraction and 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy at room temperature. The structural and hyperfine interaction parameters were recognized in relation with decreasing silver concentration. The study revealed that the delafossite structure of AgxFeO2 was maintained up to x = 0.9; as the range of silver concentration was decreased to 0.05 ≤ x ≤ 0.8, a mixture of AgFeO2, Fe2O3 or/and FeOOH was formed.

Nanocrystalline Fe80–x–yCoxNiyCu1Nb3Si4B12 alloys were prepared by the annealing of amorphous ribbons. Primary crystallization of the alloys annealed at temperatures of between 500 and 550°C was studied by X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Magnetic properties of the alloys were investigated using a hysteresis loop tracer and vibrating sample magnetometer. The annealed ribbons are composed of a two-phase nanostructure consisting of bcc Fe-based grains embedded in an amorphous matrix. Conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy (CEMS) measurements reveal a more advanced crystallization process in the surface layers when compared with the volume of the ribbons. The degree of saturation magnetization of the nanocrystalline alloys is of about 1.5 T. The coercive fi eld varies from 1.0 to 6.5 A/m and peaks at an annealing temperature of 525°C. Magnetic softening of the nanocrystalline alloys observed after annealing at 550°C is correlated with a volume fraction of the nanocrystalline bcc phase.

Opis:
Electron configuration changes of Fe(III) ions in porphyrin complexes with chloride axial ligands caused by the successive nitrogen substitution of CH methine bridges at meso positions of the porphyrin ring is discussed on the basis of Mössbauer spectroscopy results. It was shown that increase of a number of nitrogen atoms at the meso positions changes the character of quantum-mechanically mixed spin state of Fe(III) ions (S = 5/2 + 3/2) by the increase of the intermediate-spin (S = 3/2) contribution. This feature is reflected in Mössbauer spectra by an increase of quadrupole splitting values and the decrease of the asymmetry of quadrupole doublets, when the number of nitrogen atoms at the meso positions increases. Isomer shifts remain practically unchanged. These peculiarities are discussed in the light of spin relaxation mechanisms and the occupancy of d orbitals in Fe(III) ions coordinated to the porphyrin ring and chloride ligand. It has been noticed that Mössbauer parameters correlate qualitatively with EPR data.

In this work investigations of structure and magnetic properties of conventionally sintered Bim+1Ti3Fem.3O3m+3 compounds with 4 less-than or equal to m less-than or equal to 8 were performed using X-ray diffraction, Mossbauer spectroscopy and vibrating sample magnetometry. Room-temperature Mossbauer spectra of the compounds correspond to a paramagnetic state, however, low temperature measurements (80 K) reveal the antiferromagnetic state with a residual paramagnetic phase. Temperature dependencies of magnetic susceptibility, chi sigma(T), provided magnetic ordering temperatures and revealed an irreversibility in Aurivillius compounds with m greater-than or equal to 5. In the case of Bi5Ti3FeO15 compound the chi sigma(T) dependence shows a paramagnetic behavior down to 2 K. The Bi6Ti3Fe2O18 compound reveals a magnetic ordering at 11 K. The compounds with m = 6-8 show a magnetic ordering at temperatures higher than 200 K. Highly irreversible character of their temperature dependencies of chi sigma indicates a spin-glass type disordered magnetism with frustration due to a random distribution of Fe on Ti at their sites.

The materials studied were polycrystalline compounds Er2-xTbxFe14B (x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4) which crystallize in a tetragonal lattice and display a variety of spin arrangements. The compounds have been measured with 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy over the temperature range 80–320 K in order to investigate the spin reorientation processes. Each compound was studied in a wide temperature range, with precise Mössbauer scanning in the vicinity of the transition. The set of spectra obtained for a given compound was analyzed using simultaneous fi tting procedure to investigate the infl uence of the transition on the shape of the spectra. The fi tting program was specifi ed to analyze the transition according to the ‘two state model’: spins fl ip abruptly from initial angle to fi nal arrangement (90° angle). Obtained results suggest that spin reorientation process cannot be described using only the mentioned above model. Additional computer simulations based on the Yamada–Kato model were conducted to determine temperature range and the type of spin alignments in the vicinity of the transition. These theoretical results supported by spectra analysis suggest the existence of intermediate (canted) spin arrangements in the studied compounds. The spin arrangement diagram was constructed.

Opis:
1 at.% 119Sn doped La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 compound was studied by Mössbauer spectroscopy, magnetization, AC susceptibility and resistivity measurements. Huge separation (66 K) of the transition temperatures from the ferromagnetic (FM) to paramagnetic (PM) state (TC) and from metallic to insulating state (TM-I) clearly shows that transition from FM metallic to PM insulator phase goes via FM insulator phase. The Mn lattice dynamics was studied by the relative changes of Lamb-Mössbauer factor f as a function of temperature. In the Debye approximation from the calculated ln(f/f0) values of the characteristic Debye temperatures (čD) were estimated for the FM (368(10) K) and PM (391(6) K) phases. No anomaly of -ln(f/f0) at TM-I and its rather spurious increase around TC was found. The 119Sn isotope as a local diamagnetic probe samples the transferred hyperfine field (Bhf) from its neighbour Mn magnetic moments and witnesses the dynamics of the Mn moments. Theoretical curve based on the molecular field theory was fitted to the experimental values of Bm hf ax and the value of the ordering temperature (TC * H 280 K) of Mn moments inside the large FM domains was estimated. It is much higher than the TC (172 K) obtained from magnetization measurement. The coexistence of FM and PM phases, which is evident from the shape of our 119Sn Mössbauer spectra, was confirmed for temperatures T e 150 K and indicates the inhomogeneous character of the magnetic transition.

In the present work, the Fe-Al-X (X = Cu; Ni; Cr) metallic powders produced by the self-decomposition method of the Fe-Al doped alloys were examined by Mössbauer spectroscopy. The concentration of the Fe vacancies and the Fe atoms substituting Al (Fe-AS) was determined from the intensities of the sub-spectra in the Mössbauer analysis connected with distinct Fe environments. The results have shown that nickel and copper cause an increase of vacancy concentrations in comparison with the values found for Fe-Al metallic powders, whereas chromium decreases vacancy concentrations causing a significant increase of anti-site atoms Fe-AS concentration.

Opis:
Samples of natural alfa-Fe doped randomly with Os impurities up to about 9 at.% have been investigated by means of the 14.41 keV Mössbauer absorption spectroscopy of 57Fe vs. Os concentration and at room temperature. It has been found that the nearest neighbor single Os impurity reduces hyperfine magnetic field on the iron nucleus by 3.97 T, while the second neighbor single Os impurity decreases this field by 1.11 T. More distant impurities slightly increase iron hyperfine field. There are no discernible effects of the Os-Os interaction on the magnetic field seen by iron. On the other hand, the electron charge density on the iron nucleus is increased by the nearest neighbor Os atom as seen via changes in the isomer shift, i.e. via changes in the spectral shift. The second neighbor impurity has the opposite effect on the charge density. More distant impurities tend to decrease the charge density as well. The effect of the first and second neighbor impurities decreases with increasing overall Os concentration indicating some Os-Os interaction influencing a charge density of the conduction electrons seen on the iron nucleus.

The rest of the iron, about 20%, is in the oxidation state Fe2+. This iron could be mostly present as VIFe2+, but five-fold coordinated iron is also possible. Finally, the structural model of the synthesized 60P2O5-40Fe2O3 glass was proposed.

The Mössbauer spectra measured with x = 0.2, 0.3 show three doublets with different values of isomer shift (IS) and quadrupole splitting (QS) related to three different local surroundings of Fe atoms in the hexagonal Ni2In-type structure. It was shown that Fe atoms in the hexagonal Ni2In-type structure of as-cast Ni1−xFexMnGe alloys are preferentially located in Ni sites and small amount of Fe is located in Mn and probably in Ge sites. The spectrum for x = 0.1 shows the doublets in the central part of spectrum and a broad sextet. The doublets originate from the Fe atoms in the paramagnetic state of hexagonal Ni2In-type structure, whereas the sextet results from the Fe atoms in orthorhombic TiNiSi-type structure.

The spin reorientation process in the Tm2–xHoxFe14B series of compounds was studied using 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy over the temperature range 5.2–320 K with a focus on the analysis of conical spin arrangement. Each compound was studied by precise Mössbauer scanning in the vicinity of the transition and during the transition. By applying computer simulations based on the simplified Yamada-Kato model, as well as on some literature data for R2Fe14B (R = Tm, Ho) compounds, the above series was selected for studies as it contains compounds with different spin arrangements (axial, planar, conical). It was a crucial requirement for obtaining unambiguous angular dependences when applying a simultaneous fitting procedure of Mössbauer spectra. Such an extended procedure was applied which allowed the temperature dependence of the angle describing the position of the magnetization vector to be obtained. The results were compared with those from theoretical simulations. The spin arrangement diagram was constructed. A conical spin arrangement was confirmed over a wide temperature range.

In the case of samples with a significant amount of crystallites, a high field (about 27.5 T) component of continuous part of the hyperfine field distribution was found that could be attributed to boundary regions between the grains and rest of the sample. The existence of the surface effects was confirmed in the magnetostrictive experiment.

Opis:
Two isostructural series of polycrystalline compounds: Er2-xYxFe14B and Er2-xCexFe14B have been studied by 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy in the temperature range 80-370 K. The spin reorientation phenomenon (a transition from basal plane to axial easy magnetisation direction) has been studied extensively by a narrow step temperature scanning in the vicinity of the transition. Using the procedure of subtracting the Mössbauer spectra taken for the same compound at different temperatures, it was possible to follow the influence of transition on the shape of spectra. From this procedure it was concluded that in the region of transition each subspectrum splits into two Zeeman sextets, which are characterised by different hyperfine magnetic fields and quadrupole splittings. The consistent way of describing the Mössbauer spectra was proposed. The spin reorientation temperatures have been established for all compositions and compared with the values obtained from theoretical calculations of spin orientation angle based on phenomenological model. The spin arrangement diagrams have been constructed.

Opis:
In Mossbauer spectra of the Sołtmany meteorite we identified four iron-bearing minerals: olivine, pyroxene, kamacite and troilite. The distribution of iron among these minerals is different in the Sołtmany meteorite from this distribution in the Baszkowka meteorite. As Sołtmany and Baszkowka meteorites are ordinary chondrites type L (both falls), differences in the distribution of iron over the four main iron-bearing mineral phases could be the basis for a new classification of L-type ordinary chondrites. Small amounts of taenite were also observed in the Sołtmany meteorite. The ratio of iron in kamacite and taenite in the Sołtmany meteorite was found to be about 3. No Fe3+ could be detected.

Opis:
In this study, the influence of Ti content on the microstructure of the martensite bcc α'), which was formed by thermal effect, was investigated by scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope observations, in Fe-30Ni-xTi (x=0.8, 1.8, 2.6) alloys. The crystallographic orientation relationship between austenite fcc (γ) and thermally induced bcc (α') martensite was found to be as (111)_{γ}/(011)_{α} (Kurdjumov-Sachs (K-S)), by the electron diffraction analysis. The martensitic transformation temperature (M_{s}) of α' martensite was determined as -41°, -62°, and -76 ° in the alloys with 0.8%, 1.8%, and 2.6% Ti concentration, respectively. The Mössbauer spectrometer analysis has been revealed by a paramagnetic character for the austenite phase and magnetically order character for α' martensite phase. Hyperfine magnetic field, isomer shift and volume fractions of phases were determined by the Mössbauer spectroscopy.

Opis:
The high temperature decomposition of basalt from Lower Silesia (Poland) was followed by Mössbauer spectroscopy investigation. The Fe content of the sample was ~9.0 at.%. The X-ray diffraction analysis shows that augite (37%) and olivine (12%) are major Fe-bearing mineral components. The sample also contains significant amount of anorthite (22%) and nepheline (17%). The sample was heated at various temperatures between 200o C and 1100o C for three hours. Up to a temperature of 500o C changes in contribution of Fe-bearing minerals are insignificant. Heating in the temperature range from 500o C to 1100o C leads to a systematic increase in contribution of iron oxides at the cost of contribution of silicate minerals, like augite and olivine. Mössbauer spectrum obtained after heating at 1100o C showed hematite as the main iron oxide phase. The ratio of Fe3+/Fetot in the non-heated sample was equal to 0.51 and after heating at 1100o C this ratio amounted to 0.89.
