Opis:
The transport of heavy metals from mining disposal site to groundwater and surface water is one of the most serious environmental problems in the world. The transport of heavy metals such as Zn, Cd and Mn from leaching filter cake in RECo, Zanjan, Iran was examined by using column leaching. Parameters studied included: flow rate, pH of input solution and leaching time. In this study, the maximum dissolution percents of Zn, Cd and Mn in input solution pH of 5 were 45.50 %, 53.97% and 19.94%, respectively. To statistically analysis the experimental results, SPSS14 software was employed. The results of SPSS 14 indicated that for the Zn, Cd and Mn dissolution, time and flow rate were found respectively, the effective parameters for the pollution in zinc leach residues.

Opis:
Dolomite is the main impurity mineral in magnesite ore, affecting the quality of magnesite products. This study proposed a selective leaching process to reduce the calcium content from the magnesite flotation concentrate using hydrochloride acid (HCl). Laboratory scale tests were conducted to explore the influence of operation factors including HCl concentration, leaching temperature and time, stirring speed on the leaching recovery. The results showed that leaching recovery of CaO and MgO increased with increasing HCl concentration, temperature and time. The CaO leaching recovery is always significantly higher than that of MgO, indicating a good selectivity of HCl to leach dolomite from magnesite. The leaching kinetics of both dolomite and magnesite follow the Avrami model and are diffusion controlled, with an activation energy of 43±}1 kJ×mol-1 and 25±}4 kJ×mol-1, respectively.

Opis:
As sodium sulfide is easily oxidized to polysulfide and thiosulfate which have a gold leaching effect, gold would dissolve in leaching solution when extracting stibium from gold containing antimony concentrate by alkaline sulfide. Through leaching test and kinetics analysis, the decomposition regularity of sodium sulfide and leaching rate were studied under different leaching conditions. The results indicated that the gold content in antimony concentrate was 28.41g/Mg, and the content of antimony and sulfur was 36.01% and 14.04%, respectively. The main metallic minerals were native gold, arsenopyrite, stibnite, and the gangue minerals were mainly quartz. Anodic polarization curve shows reduced iron powder can increase the peak potential of the oxidation of the leaching solution and it can effectively prevent the decomposition of sodium sulfide and the dissolution of gold. Optimized stibium-extraction efficiency was achieved under the following conditions: a concentration of sodium sulfide and sodium hydroxide at 110g/dm³ and 20g/dm³, respectively; a ratio of iron powder to concentrate of 1:30; a ratio of liquid to solid of 5:1; agitation speed of 600rad/min; reaction temperature of 353.15K; and a reaction time of 3 h. Under the optimized conditions, high antimony recovery (97.35%) and low gold dissolution (1.32%) were achieved.

Recent developments of acid leaching of titanium concentrates and ores have produced renewed industrial and commercial interest. However, the leaching kinetics and mechanism of these concentrates and ores had received little attention. This work, therefore, addresses the leaching kinetics and mechanism of Ti from a rutile concentrate in sulfuric acid solution. The leaching reaction was controlled by diverse parameters like temperature, particle size, acid concentration, liquid/solid (L/S) ratio, and stirring speed. The leaching kinetics was investigated using the Shrinking Core Model in order to determine the optimum criteria which control the reaction. The kinetics analysis showed that the rate of dissolution of Ti increased by increasing reaction temperature, L/S ratio, and stirring speed, while it decreased upon increasing particle size. The kinetics analysis revealed that the dissolution reaction is controlled by the chemical reaction at the rutile particle surface. Applying the Arrhenius relation, the apparent energy of activation Ea for the leaching reaction was calculated to be 23.4kJ/mol. A semi-empirical overall rate equation was introduced to describe the combined effects of the process variables upon the rate of the dissolution reaction: 〖1-(1-x)〗^(1/3)=k_0 〖 C〗_([H2SO4])^0.803 〖 (dp)〗^(-0.518) 〖(L/S)〗^0.793 〖(w)〗^0.668 e^((-23400/RT)) t

Opis:
In this study, variations in permeability of a gold ore by nut shell addition was studied. Ore particle size, nut shell size and volume fraction in the ore were the parameters investigated. Permeability is an important issue in heap leach operations considering the processing duration. Particularly below 6 mm particle size permeability is greatly hampered. Turkey is the leading country in the world in hazelnut production. Therefore, considerable amounts of nut shell are obtained as a by-product. Incerase in the permeability of a finely crushed ore will obviously enable an increase in the leaching efficiency. The finer the particle size the more the liberation of gold is yet the permeability is lower. Therefore, this study focuses on the possibility of improving the permeability of ore heaps with nut shell addition. Optimum amount of nut shell which should be added to the ore was found to be 5% by volume. It was found that the permeability of ore crushed below 2.36 mm considerably increased by the addition of nut shell below 18 mm.

Recovery of silver and lead by means of chloride leaching of solid residue after atmospheric leaching of the copper concentrate from Lubin Concentrator (KGHM) was investigated. The effect of leaching temperature, chloride concentration, Fe(III) and oxygen presence, solid-to-liquid ratio and feed preleaching with NaOH on the silver and lead recovery was analyzed. Chloride leaching appeared to be very effective for recovery of lead, whereas satisfactory recovery of silver was observed after chemical pretreatment of the leaching feed with alkali solution of NaOH in order to liberate Ag entrapped in the jarosite structure. It was found that to achieve the satisfactory recovery of Ag and Pb leaching had to be performed in acidified 4 M chloride concentration at temperature of 90 oC. The presence of oxidants, that is O2 and iron(III) ions, was beneficial in the initial stage of the process. The maximum recovery of Ag and Pb was found for the solid-to-liquid ratio of 1:10 after 10 hours leaching.

Opis:
Although the operating properties of GalvanoxTM leaching have been widely studied in the literature, several factors concerning chalcopyrite passivation during the process remain unknown so far. The present work hence aims at investigating the significant effect of externally added pyrite features with a particular focus on its particle size (d80 of 0.52, 20, 45 and 2000 µm) through a series of experiments performed in a 2-L stirred-tank electro-reactor. To this end, the role of pyrite: chalcopyrite ratio (0.49:1, 2:1 and 4:1) and presence of electrical current were examined while the rest of the parameters kept constant (80 °C temperature, 400–500 mV (Ag/AgCl) redox potential, pulp density of 10% (w/v), and stirring rate of 1200 rpm). Plus, kinetic models of the leaching tests were studied based on the diffusion and chemical controlling concepts. It was found that the coarser the pyrite particles, the more favorable the copper extraction from the concentrate due to acceleration of reactions in the cathodic electrode and high mass transfers. However, this was in contradiction with the existing reports in the literature. Moreover, galvanic interactions became intensive in the presence of pyrite meaning extensive chalcopyrite dissolution with significantly reduced passivation. Ultimate copper extraction values of 24.17±1.25%, 55.79±0.91% and 57.26±1.59% were resulted at Py:Cp ratios of 0.49:1 (natural), 2:1 and 4:1, respectively. The results showed that maximum copper recovery of 67.32±2.34% was obtained at an optimum condition of pyrite grain size=2000 µm, Py:Cp=4:1, current application=500 mA, 8 h and 80 °C. Finally, detailed kinetic modeling indicated that the chemical control mechanism was dominant in the early reaction stages (t<3.5 h) concerning the availability of fresh surface for chemical agents; however, the second half of the process (8.0 h>t>3.5 h) was controlled by the diffusion control.

Zbadano ługowanie miedzi i cyny z płytki drukowanej układu elektronicznego i porównano do ługowania chemicznego. Całkowita ilość usuniętych metali była nieco mniejsza we wszystkich przypadkach. Dodatek bakterii ulepszył proces ługowania miedzi, jednak porównywalne rezultaty otrzymano poprzez dodanie mineralnej pożywki nie zawierającej bakterii. Ługowanie cyny przebiegało w inny sposób, a obecność bakterii nie polepszyła wydajności procesu.
This contribution is focused on the leaching of metals from electronic waste using bacterium Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans under static conditions. Leaching of copper and tin from circuit board using bacteria was verified and compared to chemical leaching. The overall amounts of leached metals were quite low in all variants. Addition of bacteria improved the leaching of copper; however comparable results were obtained by addition of the sole nutrient medium without bacteria. Leaching of the tin followed different pattern and was not improved by presence of bacteria.

This study focused on the leaching of uranium and thorium from a high grade Ethiopian tantalite ore using sulfuric acid. The effects of variables such as acid concentration, temperature and leaching time were studied. In general, the leaching efficiency of uranium increases with increasing temperature from 100 to 300°C whereas the opposite trend was observed for thorium. The amount of uranium leached increased from 69.1% at contact time of 1 hr to 88.6% when the tantalite ore was leached for 3 hrs. On the other hand, for the experiments conditions considered in this study, the leaching behavior of uranium and thorium did not change significantly with varying sulphuric acid concentration from 70 to 90 wt%. Overall, the highest dissolution of uranium and thorium were achieved at 100°C, 70 wt% H2SO4 concentration and 1 hr contact time.

Rapidly declining quality of copper concentrates produced by Lubin Concentrator of KGHM Polska Miedz SA, having very low content of Cu, high content of Pb, As and organic carbon as well as significant contents of Ag, Co, Ni, Zn, Re, V and Mo, makes the concentrates difficult-to-process by flash smelting. Currently hydrometallurgy, using sulfuric acid in the presence of iron(III) and oxygen as a leaching medium for base metals and chloride leaching for silver and lead, seems to be an alternative for pyrometallurgy. The goal of the work is to discuss main aspects of the necessity of application a new hydrometallurgical technology, based on different unit operations, including non-oxidative atmospheric, chloride and pressure leaching, recovery of Pb and Ag, separation of Cu and accompanying metals from PLS and arsenic neutralization. The unique lithological, mineralogical and chemical properties of the process feed were discussed in details. The results of laboratory investigations performed at the Wroclaw University of Technology and assumptions of the process scale-up for acquisition of data for full scale technology were summarized. Planned investigations on the pilot plant scale will provide technical and economic data for a pre-feasibility study of the future hydrometallurgical plant.

The rapidly declining quality of ores and concentrates produced by Lubin Concentrator (KGHM) makes the flotation concentrates exceptionally difficult-to-process by flash smelting. Currently, a hydrometallurgical process, using sulfuric acid with the presence of oxidants as a leaching medium, seems to be either a reasonable alternative or a complementary option to pyrometallurgy. The unique lithological, mineralogical and chemical properties of the concentrate were considered in a selection of the process route. Results of a pressure leaching of the copper sulfide concentrate from Lubin Concentrator (ZWR Lubin) with oxygenated aqueous H2SO4 solutions are presented. The effect of temperature from 120 to 200 °C, initial concentration of H2SO4 from 60 to 100 g/dm3, and oxygen partial pressure ranging from 0.5 to 2.0 MPa were investigated. The pressure leaching appeared to be an efficient process for recovering copper from the Lubin concentrate. At optimal leaching conditions (140 °C, 100 g/dm3 H2SO4, 1.0 MPa O2) 96% of Cu was extracted after 4 h.

Opis:
Oxide fraction of industrial zinc ash from hot dip galvanizing was characterized in terms of composition and leaching behaviour in 10% sulfuric acid solution. Waste product contained about 68% Zn, 6% Cl, 3% Al, 1% Fe, 0.7% Si, 0.5% Pb and minor percentages of other metals (Mn, Cu, Ti etc.). It consisted mainly of zinc oxide contaminated with metallic zinc, zinc hydroxide chloride and silica. Dissolution of the metals from the material was determined as a function of solid to liquid ratio (50-150 kg/m3), temperature (20°C and 35°C) and agitation rate (300 and 900 rpm). The best results (50 g/dm3 Zn(II) at 78% zinc recovery) were obtained for 100 kg/m3 and the temperature of 20°C. Increase in the agitation rate had weak effect on the zinc yield. The final solutions were contaminated mainly by Fe(II, III) ions. Leaching of the material was an exothermic process with the reaction heat of about 800 kJ/kg.

Opis:
In this research, the high arsenic content dust of copper smelting, as a raw material, the extraction of copper and arsenic from the high arsenic content dust in the leaching system containing acidic and alkaline compounds was investigated. Meanwhile, the effects of acid/alkaline initial concentration, liquid to solid ratio, leaching temperature, leaching time on the leaching rate of copper and arsenic were studied. The optimum conditions for the leaching of high arsenic content dust and preparation of copper arsenate were determined. The results showed that acidic/alkaline leaching of high arsenic content dust was particularly effective. 93.2% of the copper, and 91.6% of the arsenic were leached in an acidic leaching process and 95% of the arsenic, while less than 3% of the copper, less than 5% of the antimony, less than 2% of the bismuth was also leached in an alkaline leaching process. A new method (the parallel flow drop precipitate method) was developed in the synthesis of copper arsenate process. The parallel flow drop method was employed to adjust the molar ratio (copper to arsenic) of the mixed solution of the acid-leaching solution and the alkali-leaching solution by taking the drop acceleration of an acidic leaching solution and an alkaline leaching solution at 10 mL/min and 12 mL/min, at a temperature of 60°C and a reaction time of 1h. Copper arsenate was prepared by mixing an acidic leaching solution and an alkaline leaching solution. The main phases of copper arsenate were CuHAsO4·1.5H2O and Cu5As4O15·9H2O. Copper arsenate contained 30.13% copper and 31.10% arsenic.

The objective of this work was to compare the bioleaching with the acid leaching of uranium under similar process conditions within 65 days. The low-grade uranium ore used in the experiments was collected from Radoniow’s ‘small’ dump, Poland. Bioleaching and acid leaching studies were carried out in identical columns. The isolated bacterial consortium from the Radoniow’s mine was used for the bioleaching process. A solution of sulphuric acid and H2O2 as oxidizing agent was used for the acid leaching. The extraction of uranium under acid leaching conditions reached maximum of 64±13 % w/w after 31 days. The bioleaching of uranium achieved a maximum extraction of 75±15 % w/w after 55 days. In this study an attempt was made to demonstrate the relationship between the shrinking-core model and the experimental data by plotting the fractional conversion of uranium against time.

Opis:
Scientific objective of this work was elaboration of radiometric method for the development of hydrometallurgical process for recovery of Cu from the copper ore. A neutron activation analysis (NAA) was identified as a very convenient tool for the process investigation. The samples of copper ore were activated in a nuclear reactor. The parameters of the neutron activation were calculated. Radioisotope 64Cu was selected as an optimal tracer, and it was used for the investigation of the leaching process. During the experiments, various processes applying leaching media such as sulphuric acid, nitric acid, and organic acids were investigated. The recovery of the metals using sulphuric acid was insufficient, around 10%. Investigated organic media also did not meet expectations. The best results were obtained in experiments with nitric acid. Up to 90% of Cu and other metals were extracted from the copper ore. Copper concentration calculations obtained by NAA were confimed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) technique. Both techniques gave comparable results, but the advantage of the NAA is a possibility for easy online measurements without shutting down or disturbing the system.

Opis:
The use of radiotracers in the present study is intended to replace traditional steps of metal quantitative analysis (solution sampling and instrumental chemical analysis) and to allow real-time measurements of metal concentrations during the leaching process. In this study, 64Cu, an isotope of copper, was selected as a radiotracer. Samples of copper flotation tailings were irradiated in the Maria research reactor (Świerk, Poland) and mixed with an inactive portion of the milled flotation waste. The leaching process was carried out in a glass reactor, and the radiation spectrum was measured using a gamma spectrometer. The material was then treated using various acids (sulphuric acid, nitric acid, acetic acid, citric acid, and ascorbic acid) in a wide range of their concentrations. Experiments with the radiotracer were conducted in sulphuric and nitric acids. The amount of the leached metal (copper) was calculated on the basis of the peak area ratio in the gamma-ray spectrum of the activated tailings and standard samples. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was also used to analyse the metal content. Maximum recovery of 56% Cu was achieved using 9 M HNO3, whereas the recovery was lowest for ascorbic acid (1%). Both analytical methods were compared, and the results presented in this paper are in good agreement with radiometric measurements obtained using ICP-MS analysis.

Opis:
Industrial steelmaking (EAF) flue dust was characterized in terms of chemical and phase compositions, leaching behaviour in 20% sulphuric acid solution as well as leaching thermal effect. Waste product contained about 43% Zn, 27% Fe, 19% O, about 3% Pb and Mn and lesser amounts of other elements (Ca, Si, Mo, etc.). It consisted mainly of oxide-type compounds of iron and zinc. Dissolution of metals (Zn, Fe, Mn) from the dust was determined in a dependence of solid to liquid ratio (50-200 g/L), temperature (20-80°C) and leaching time (up to 120 min). The best result of 60% zinc recovery was obtained for 50 g dust/L and a temperature of 80°C. Leaching of the material was an exothermic process with a reaction heat of about –318 kJ/kg. Precipitation purification of the solution was realized using various ratios of H2 O2 to NH3aq . A product of this stage was hydrated iron(III) oxide. Final solution was used for zinc electrowinning. Despite that pure zinc was obtained the highest cathodic current efficiency was only 40%.

Opis:
A characteristic iron-containing halloysite sample from Turkey was subjected to acid leaching using organic and inorganic acids for removing iron impurities. The aim of this study was to compare the raw hydrated and dehydrated halloysites with the leached products. Hydrochloric acid and oxalic acid were chosen as leaching agents for the removal of iron impurities at 80 °C for 2.5 h. The physicochemical properties of the acid-treated halloysite were analyzed by XRF, XRD, FTIR, TGA, DTA, SEM, and TEM. The XRF results showed that the acid treatment caused the dissolution of minor amounts of Al3+ ions from the clay layer. The XRD results indicated that the crystalline structure was unchanged after the leaching. However, it was observed that the hydrated (1 nm) halloysite readily lost its interlayer water and was transformed to the dehydrated (0.7 nm) form. In addition, no visible effects of the acid treatment on the tubular structure of halloysite were detected in the SEM and TEM images. Typical pores of varying dimensions were observed in all of the samples regardless of their form or treatment. Furthermore, the TG-DTA and FTIR analysis results were similar for both the raw and the acid-treated samples.

This paper investigates the dissolution mechanism of a lateritic nickel ore from the Caldag Region of Manisa in Turkey. The ore sample contained 1.2% Ni, 24.8% Fe, and 0.062% Co. The optimum leaching conditions were found to be temperature 80 oC, particle size -74 μm, H2SO4 concentration 200 g/dm3, solids ratio (by weight) 10% and leaching duration 8 h. The extractions of 98.2% Ni, 98.6% Fe and Co 98.9% were obtained under these conditions. Additionally, the effects of additional substances such as NaCl, Na2S2O5, Na2SO4, and KCl were investigated in order to decrease the leaching duration. The results showed that the additives accelerated the leaching kinetics and achieved nearly the same nickel and cobalt extractions at the end of 4 h compared to the results obtained after 8 h without the additives. If the additives containing chlorine were used, it was determined that the iron extraction showed no increase, although both the nickel and cobalt extractions increased.

Opis:
The methods of decontamination of radionuclides from soils are considered. The literature focuses on fixing radionuclides in soils and creating geochemical barriers that it is prevent the spread of pollution. The main disadvantage of these methods is excluding the possibility of building a territory. It is needed to clean up the area to the sanitary and hygienic requirements for further use and then it is desirable to fix the residual activity. The conducted analysis of forms of radionuclides fixation in soils and mechanics of this fixation, therewith revealed that Cs-137 fixed more strongly on mineral components of soil, than Sr-90, which is mainly in the acid-soluble and exchangeable form, and, as a consequence, passes into the liquid phase during soil deactivation more easily. Contaminated soil deactivation in the urbanized territory is possible by washing it by ferric chloride solution at a concentration 0.02–0.05 M and with an equimolar addition of an ammonium chloride. Therewith, most efficient methods, which use in-situ conditions, are heap and convection leaching technologies with treatment degree, which is not less than 80%. At the same time, the most efficient methods which use in-situ conditions are heap and the convection leaching. The hardware-technological scheme of a convection leaching is presented. It is worth to note that ammonium salts additions slightly rise coefficient of treatment from Sr-90. Because ammonium salts are inexpensive, their additions allow to obtain significant economic benefits due to decreasing ferric chloride consumption, which is more valuable, and waste water volume reduction.

Estimating groundwater vulnerability to pollution is based on the quantitative and qualitative assessment of the degree of exposure to the pollution. This article attempts to assess groundwater vulnerability to pollution in the area of a complex of landfill sites located in the supply area of one of the important groundwater reservoirs in southern Poland. Two dynamic leaching tests and two static tests were carried out on two different samples of slag from one of the metallurgical landfills during various periods of storage (15 year old waste and freshly deposited waste). Transport equations were based on the data from a column experiment. The advection-dispersion equation for column leaching was employed, which confirmed the simulation parameters through experimentation. The results of the leaching tests on chlorides showed that they are leached from the landfill over a period of ~60–90 years from the moment of depositing the waste. The seepage time for the Quaternary aquifer is 1–7 years and, for the Triassic aquifer, 5–40 years. The Backman’s contamination index (1998) values exceeded 25, while a high threat to groundwater is observed when the contamination index value equals 3. The use of all the aforementioned methods determined the most vulnerable area.

In this research cyanide-free leaching of pure gold and pressure oxidized refractory gold concentrate by thiosulfate-copper-ammonia solutions were examined. A quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) was used to study gold leaching as a factorial series where the best gold leaching rate (2.987 mg/(cm2∙h)) was achieved with a solution consisting of 0.2 M (NH4)2S2O3, 1.2 M NH3, 0.01 M CuSO4 and 0.4 M Na2SO4. Temperature had the greatest effect on the gold leaching rate. An increase in thiosulfate concentration (0.1–0.2 M) increased gold dissolution. The combined effect of temperature and ammonia concentration had a statistically significant effect on the gold leaching rate at 0.1 M M2S2O3. Combination of applied potential and NH3:S2O3 ratio had a statistically significant effect on the gold leaching rate at 0.2 M M2S2O3. An increase in applied potential decreased the gold dissolution rate at low ammonia concentrations but increased it at high concentrations. A pressure oxidized gold concentrate was leached for 6 hours in the batch reactor leaching experiments. The effect of rotative velocity (1.26–1.56 m/s) and slurry density (10–30 wt%) was investigated at the following leaching parameters: 0.2 M Na2S2O3, 0.6 M NH3, 0.01 M CuSO4, 0.4 M Na2SO4. Lower slurry density (10 wt%) resulted in a higher Au leaching efficiency. An increase in the rotation rate did not have an effect on the final Au leaching recovery. The best Au leaching efficiency (89%) was achieved with 590 rpm mixing, 1.56 m/s rotative velocity and 10 wt% slurry density.

One of the major issue in gold chloride leaching is a tendency of gold to either precipitate or adsorb on a carbonaceous matter in an ore, i.e. preg-robbing. This paper discusses issues related to a preg-robbing phenomenon in gold hydrometallurgy, specifically in gold chloride-bromide leaching. This phenomenon has been observed in the 1800s to decrease gold recovery during gold chlorination as well as the state-of-art of gold cyanidation processes. The experiments were conducted in order to study the preg-robbing phenomenon in chloride-bromide media. The tendency of preg-robbing was demonstrated by adding carbon in a non-preg-robbing ore. It was shown that the preg-robbing tendency in the chloride-bromide media was very strong. Addition of 0.01% w/w of carbon powder into the non-preg-robbing ore decreased gold recovery from 92 to 70% and addition 5% w/w of carbon decreased gold recovery to almost zero.

The degradation of tebuconazole in the majority of Polish mineral soils withlow organic carbon content is slow, and its adsorptionis especially low in subsoils. Therefore, the fate of tebuconazole in these soils cannot be predicted based on the results of the adsorption and degradation experiments carried out in typical soils of the European Union. For this reason, the simulations of tebuconazole accumulation in Polish soils and its leaching to groundwater were carried out. The cultivation of winter cereals and winter oilseed rape was simulatedusing FOCUS PELMO in six Arenosol, Luvisol, and Chernozem profiles, representing 59% of Polish arable mineral soils. The simulations indicated that almost all fungicide that reached the soil surface was retained in the topsoil layer of 0–15 cm. The highest concentrations (range of 0.069–0.320 mg/kg) were estimated for the layer 0–5 cm. The results suggested that runoff can be the principal source of tebuconazole in surface water. It was found that the majority of tebuconazole that reached the soils was microbiologically degraded. However, in the years with unfavorable weather conditions for degradation, up to 11% of the tebuconazole that reached the soils remain undegraded. In addition to the accumulation of tebuconazole in the topsoils, the simulations indicated its very slow but constant penetration into the subsoils. The estimated concentrations of tebuconazole in percolate water were low: < 0.02 μg/L at the depth of 25 cm, < 0.002 μg/L at the depth of 75 cm, and trace concentrations at the depth of 1 m in one profile. The obtained results were consistent with the results of the monitoring studies available in literature.

The presence of arsenic in zinc sulphide concentrates is particularly harmful, because it creates problems in zinc electrolysis. The main source of arsenic in non-ferrous metallurgy is arsenopyrite (FeAsS). In oxidative roasting of zinc concentrates, FeAsS oxidizes to arsenic oxides (As2O3, As2O5). In this connection a natural FeAsS was examined, and also the distribution of arsenic in the products of the roasting process, the cycle of sulphuric acid obtaining and the leaching of zinc calcine were studied. The arsenic contamination of soils in the vicinity of nonferrous metals smelter KCM SA, Plovdiv, Bulgaria as a result of zinc and lead productions has been studied.

In this study, the extraction of lithium from zinnwaldite concentrate containing 0.25% Li was investigated. The run-of-mine ore originated from nepheline syenite rocks in Kırşehir, Turkey, and contained 216.3 ppm Li. Firstly, the ore was beneficiated by a flotation process to increase the lithium content. Then, it was subjected to roasting and water leaching processes, respectively. In the roasting process, calcite and gypsum were used as additives to form dissoluble lithium sulfate for the next process. Additionally, the effect of roasting temperatures (750, 850, 950, and 1000°C) and times (30, 60, 90, 120, and 240 min) was examined along with different ratios of additives to concentrate to find the optimal conditions. Accordingly, the calcined product from the roasting process was dissolved in water by determining the optimal leaching temperature, time, and water/solid ratio. Consequently, a lithium product was obtained from the concentrate with 93.3% extraction efficiency. Finally, the mother liquor contained 30 mg/dm3 Li, the production of Li2CO3 from mother liquor will be investigated in case of production of the sample at the optimal conditions of roasting and leaching in further studies.

Opis:
To improve the quality of raw materials from North East Algeria and their application in the field of flat glass manufacturing, the sandstone of El-Aouana (Jijel) was subjected to a physicochemical characterization. Analysis techniques such as X-ray diffraction, atomic absorption spectrophotometry and a chemical analysis of size fractions by sieving were used. According to this characterization it is noticed that sandstone feedstock contains primarily quartz (SiO2), as well as ferriferous minerals considered as impurities during glass manufacturing. This work concerns the removal of iron oxide from silica sandstone to obtain a material acceptable for flat glass manufacturing. For this, we have studied the silica enrichment process using a magnetic separation. Moreover, a leaching process by using hydrochloric acid has been studied under various experimental conditions; the parameters studied were: hydrochloric concentration, temperature, and time of contact. The results obtained show that the leaching studied presents a better removal of iron oxide after 150 min of treatment at temperature 90°C with a 3 mol/L, a concentrate obtained final of 99.16% SiO2 with a content of 0.01% Fe2O3.

Paper reports results of the research on the application of ammoniacal solutions (sulfate, chloride, carbonate) for hydrometallurgical treatment of smelted low-grade e-waste. Two Cu-Zn-Sn-Ag-Pb alloys were analyzed in details and discussed. Leaching of copper from the alloys was slow in sulfate solution, but the dissolution rate decreased in chloride and carbonate baths. Anodic alloys dissolution was uniform in sulfate and carbonate electrolytes, but high degradation of the material was observed in chloride bath. Chemical and phase composition of slimes and cathodic deposits produced during electrolysis were characterized. In all cases, separation of copper from other metals was found, but efficiencies of the processes were low.

Leaching studies were performed to develop a suitable method for extraction of uranium from domestic uranium ores: dictyonemic shales and sandstones. The extracting procedure was composed of successive separation steps: crushing and grinding, acid or alkaline leaching, solid-liquid separation, and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) analyses of post-leaching solutions. The influence of such process parameters as temperature, pressure, particle size of solid material, kind of leaching solution and its concentration, on the recovery efficiency of uranium and accompanying metals were tested. The efficiency of uranium leaching with sulphuric acid solution achieved 81%. Satisfactory results were obtained for the alkaline leaching process. It was found that uranium can be selectively extracted by the alkaline leaching solution. Almost complete extraction of uranium from sandstones was achieved when a mixture of sodium carbonate and sodium hydroxide, with hydrogen peroxide as a leaching solution was used.

To examine the efficiency of La and Ce recycling processes from the sludge, two major methods were used, namely leaching and precipitation. The findings suggest that 12% of La and 24.2% of Ce were contained in the sludge. The sludge was leached in an optimum condition of 6N HCl at a temperature of 70°C with a 3g/50 mL solid/liquid ratio for 3 h to obtain a 100% leaching recovery of La and Ce. After pH adjustment of the obtained La and Ce optimum leaching solution to 6 with NH4OH and a simultaneous addition of H2O2 in a ratio of 1:1, Ce precipitated out with 65.9% recovery. On the other hand, La was not precipitated. The results obtained in this study reveal that leaching and pH adjustment method could be used to recover the valuable REE of La and Ce from glass polishing sludge in order to reach the goals of resource recycling.

Effect of lead nitrate addition on cyanidation of Havran, Ovacık, Mastra LCu (low copper) and Mastra HCu (high copper) gold ores was investigated by laboratory tests at the Ovacik Gold Mine Metallurgy Laboratory. Leach tests were performed at optimum NaCN additions and pH values while different lead nitrate additions were applied. Ovacik cyanidation plant leaching time, 24 hours for the constant 100 Mg/h ore feed rate was applied as optimal for all lead nitrate tests. Results showed the increase in gold and silver recoveries between 0.4-1.2% for gold and 3.9-11.6% for silver at the end of 24 hours leaching by the addition of lead nitrate as 0.1-0.5 kg/Mg. NaCN consumption decreased or did not change except for the Ovacik ore. In the case of the Ovacik ore it slightly increased.

The aim of this study was to investigate manganese and zinc recoveries from spent zinc-carbon and alkaline battery powder. The effect of sulfuric acid concentration, ascorbic acid dosage, reaction temperature and leaching time on zinc and manganese dissolutions was investigated. The optimum reductive acid leaching conditions were determined as: 3 hours, 70 °C, 0.5 M of sulfuric acid concentration, 13 g/dm3 of ascorbic acid dosage, 1/20 g/cm3 of solid/liquid ratio and 200 rpm of stirring speed. Under these conditions, dissolution efficiencies were 99.99% for Zn and 99.25% for Mn. In addition, dissolution kinetics of manganese was undertaken, and the activation energy was found to be 7.04 kJ/mol. Using 3 M NaOH as precipitating agent at room temperature, 95.35% of Zn (at pH 8) and 93.66% of Mn (at pH 10) were precipitated from the leaching solution. Under the same conditions, using 3 M KOH, precipitations of Zn and Mn were 91.63% and 96.39%, respectively. Based on the experimental results, a flowsheet of zinc and manganese recovery was proposed.

Treating chalcopyrite flotation concentrates by hydrometallurgical techniques seems to be the most convenient method for leaching copper due to concerns over air pollution and regulations regarding the emission of sulfur dioxide that result from smelting. In this study, the leaching recovery-time trajectories of bulk chalcopyrite concentrate obtained from a flotation plant in the Kastamonu region of Turkey are presented. The effects of various parameters were elucidated in the nitrous-sulfuric acid electrolyte (CNaNO2:0.05 M–0.15 M, CH2SO4:1 M) at a moderate temperature (80–120 °C). A high level of copper recovery (98%) from bulk chalcopyrite concentrate was obtained under a total pressure of 6 atm at 120°C within 2 h when using small amounts of nitrite species due to their autocatalytic behavior in acidic solutions. The kinetics were well correlated with the shrinking core model for the diffusion controlled mechanism with an apparent activation energy of 34.06 kJ·mol–1. Elemental sulfur was the primary leaching product on the mineral surface, as confirmed using XRD and SEM/EDX. The semi-empirical equation explaining the reaction rate under the present conditions was expressed as follows: ...[wzór].

Opis:
Refractory gold ores have poor gold recoveries with direct cyanide leaching. Typically the refractoriness is due to encapsulation of the gold particles inside the host mineral. To liberate gold for leaching the host mineral must be broken by mechanical or chemical means. The aim of this study was to study the effect of temperature, oxygen partial pressure and slurry density on pressure oxidation of pyrite-arsenopyrite gold concentrate. Batch oxidation tests in an autoclave were done using a factorial design. Different responses were measured and analysed to study effect of the three factors and oxidation kinet-ics. Generally, high slurry density required high temperature and oxygen partial pressure to reach com-plete oxidation. Oxidation kinetics at 225°C temperature, with 1050 kPa oxygen partial pressure and 15% slurry density was found to be fastest resulting in complete conversion of sulfides in 30 minutes. At 195°C, 700 kPa oxygen partial pressure and 10% slurry density, the oxidation kinetics for complete sul-fide conversion was about 60 minutes. Slurry densities above 10% had an adverse effect on the oxidation rate, when the temperature was below 225°C and oxygen partial pressure below 1050 kPa.

In all working Saudi gold mines, ores are treated using the hazardous cyanidation process. Some Saudi gold ores, such as Al-Amar, is known to be refractory to cyanidation. In this work, we have examined the extraction of gold from Al-Amar gold ore by the much environmentally safer and efficient thiosulfate process. The run of mine (ROM) and carbon-in-leach (CIL) feed, that is obtained after separation of copper concentrate from ROM, samples were found to contain 6.5 and 3.6 ppm gold, respectively. The mineralogical microscopic investigations of ROM samples confirmed that fine gold specks were scattered and encapsulated inside sulfide or quartz base minerals. This could explain the expected reason of the difficult leaching of gold by cyanidation. The X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the CIL feed contained quartz, pyrite, sphalerite and chlorite minerals. After detailed leaching studies of CIL feed, almost 70% of gold could be extracted at 0.2 M ammonium thiosulfate and 0.3 M ammonium hydroxide after 24 h. Addition of copper(II) as <0.2 mM only slightly enhanced the gold leaching in the ammoniacal thiosulfate solution. Gold leaching drastically decreased as the concentration of copper(II) increased 0.2 mM due to the degradation of S2O3²¯.

Sulphidic tailings from Finnish Hitura nickel mine and Pyhäsalmi multi-metal mine were leached using sulphuric acid and bioleached. The aim was to recover minor amounts of valuable Cu, Ni, Zn and Mn. Both tailings consisted mainly of iron and magnesium-containing minerals and acid neutralizing minerals. The solution after chemical leaching tests contained mostly iron and magnesium, in Hitura up to 11 g/dm3 Fe and 38 g/dm3 Mg while in Pyhäsalmi 8–9 g/dm3 Fe and 4 g/dm3 Mg. Amount of these metals was 20–100-fold larger than amount of valuable metals, which were typically 100-300 mg/dm3. Problems in chemical leaching were high consumption of acid and poor selectivity. Bioleaching using iron and sulphur oxidizing bacteria was more selective towards the valuable metals. Both in leaching and bioleaching the high concentration of iron and magnesium in solution will make metals recovery challenging.

The effects of the calcination temperature, H2SO4 concentration, leaching temperature and liquid-solid ratio on the dissolution characteristic of Ga, K and Al were studied. The results showed that increasing the calcination temperature, H2SO4 concentration and leaching temperature can improve the solubility of K and Al. However, higher H2SO4 concentration and lower leaching temperature can improve the dissolution of Ga, which was beneficial to recovery of Ga. On the basis of the solubility difference in H2SO4, a two-stage process of selective acid leaching and alkali precipitation of Ga was proposed. The concentration of Ga was increased significantly from 54 g/t in alunite ore to 4100 g/t in alkali precipitation product. The major elements of Al and K in alunite were recovered as the alum crystal with a purity of 99.62%.

Nepheline syenite, which is a silica-poor crystalline rock, competes with feldspar in applications such as glass, ceramic filler, and pigment industries. While its appearance is medium coarse granular like granite, main differences between them are nepheline syenite is silica poor, and contains high alumina and alkali content. Turkey has considerable nepheline syenite deposits in Kırşehir Region, and they contain 1.3% Fe2O3 on average, thus cannot be used unless beneficiated by flotation or/and magnetic separation. In this paper, physical and physicochemical experiments were carried out to improve the quality of nepheline syenite ore. After determinations of chemical, mineralogical, and properties of the sample, three different technologies such as flotation, magnetic separation, and leaching were applied on the ore sample, separately and combined. The obtained results showed that the magnetic separation alone could not produce a nepheline syenite concentrate assaying 0.45% Fe2O3. It was not also possible to obtain a nepheline concentrate less than 0.25% Fe2O3 adapting optimum flotation conditions. The best results were found in combination of the high intensity wet magnetic separation and flotation between -212+63 μm particle size, and a final concentrate with 0.20% Fe2O3 and 0.01% TiO2 was obtained. The leaching experiments were conducted to further decrease Fe2O3 content. Finally, a saleable nepheline syenite concentrate for tile, sanitary ware, electrode, glass, and fiberglass industries was obtained with 6.63% K2O, 9.02% Na2O, 0.15% Fe2O3, and 0.01% TiO2 by the weight of 63.9% at the end of the experiments.

Naturally, refractory gold is enclosed by sulfide minerals such as pyrite and arsenopyrite and a higher content of organic carbon, which results in difficulty in the recovery of gold. In this study, the flotation gold concentrate before and after pressure oxidation (POX) was analyzed. The analysis of the Eh-pH diagram revealed that pyrite/arsenopyrite would be dissolved in higher oxidation potential. Results of SEM-EDS showed that the surface of minerals became very rough and structure of some particles was destroyed after POX. The XRD measurement showed that pyrite was oxidized to jarosite, and gangue minerals such as quartz and organic carbon were hardly changed. The process of thiosulfate leaching of gold was designed and optimized according to Miscellaneous implemented by Response Surface Methodology (RSM). Based on the results of ANOVA, leaching model was significant. In leaching, [S2O32-] played an important role and the interactions between [S2O32-] and [Cu2+] were significant. The effect of [HA] was relatively weak. Optimum process parameters of the initial reagent concentration were 505.00 mM for [S2O32-], 34.77 mM for [Cu2+], and 0.50 mM for [HA]. Under these conditions, the Au extraction value was about 86.21%, which was significantly higher than that obtained with leaching directly.

In this work, the recovery of Pd compound was studied from the cemented Pd by zinc (Zn) metal from spent electroplating solutions. Initially, the selective extraction ability of ionic liquids synthesized from commercial extractants for Pd(II) over Zn(II) from the synthetic HCl solution was investigated. Pd(II) was selectively extracted over Zn(II) from 9 M HCl solution by ALi-CY301(Nmethyl-N,N,N-trioctylammonium bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) dithiophosphinic) and by ALi-I (N-methylN,N,N-trioctylammonium iodide) from weak HCl solution (pH 1). Since 9 M HCl was needed to completely dissolve Pd from the cemented Pd, ALi-CY301 was employed for the separation of Pd(II) and Zn(II) from the real HCl leaching solution of the cemented Pd. Two-stages counter-current extraction of the real HCl solution with ALi-CY301 resulted in selective extraction of Pd(II). Pd(II) was effectively stripped from the loaded ALi-CY301 by a mixture of HCl and NaClO. After oxidizing Pd(II) in the stripping solution to Pd(IV) by adding NaClO, Pd(IV) compound was synthesized by adding NH4Cl as a precipitant. By comparing leaching and extraction efficiency between hydrochloric and sulfuric acid solutions, a hydrometallurgical process consisted of HCl leaching, extraction with ALiCY301 and precipitation with NH4Cl was recommended for the recovery of pure (NH4)2PdCl6 from the cemented Pd.

The leachability of heavy metals (Cu, Pb and Zn) from the coal fly ash samples was studied. The investigations executed using three leachability tests (USEPA, TCLP, ASTM). The effect of different parameters was determined (the diameter of ash grains, the kind of leaching solutions, pH of leaching solutions, the volume ratio of leaching solutions to the mass of ash samples, and the leaching time) on the leachability of the heavy metals from fly ash samples. Moreover, the influence of pH and changes in the redox potential of the leaching solutions as well as the presence of organic compounds that could potentially form complexes with metals and solubility changes of metals. The concentration of the metals studied (Cu, Pb and Zn) in all obtained solutions was determined by FAAS method. On the basis of the research investigations, optimal leachability conditions for Cu, Pb and Zn from fly ash in this study have been determined. We have also found that pH of the leaching solution, and the presence of organic compounds which have a potential capacity of complexion the metals are the important factors in determining the solubility of Cu, Pb and Zn.

The alkaline treatment of NdFeB powders in NaOH solution at various equivalent amounts of NaOH at 100°C was performed. The resultant powders were then leached in 0.5M H2SO4 solution at 25°C for 2 minutes. At 5 equivalents of NaOH, neodymium in NdFeB powders was partially transformed to neodymium hydroxide. The transformation of neodymium to neodymium hydroxide actually occurred at 10 equivalents of NaOH and was facilitated by increasing the equivalent of NaOH from 10 to 30. In addition, iron was partially transformed to magnetite during the alkaline treatment, which was also promoted at a higher equivalent of NaOH. The leaching yield of neodymium from alkaline-treated powders was increased with an increasing equivalent of NaOH up to 10; however, it slightly decreased with the equivalent NaOH of over 10. The leaching yield of iron was inversely proportional to that of rare earth elements. NdFeB powders treated at 10 equivalents of NaOH showed a maximum leaching yield of neodymium and dysprosium of 91.6% and 94.6%, respectively, and the lowest leaching yield of iron of 24.2%, resulting in the highest selective leaching efficiency of 69.4%.

The leaching kinetics of Y and Eu from waste phosphors using a hydrochloric acid (HCl) solution containing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) were investigated. Characterization of the waste phosphors was performed using XRD to ascertain the phases as (Y0.95Eu0.05)2O3 (red phosphors), (Ce0.67Tb0.33)MgAl11O19 (green phosphors), (Ba0.9Eu0.1)Mg2Al16O27 (blue phosphors), and SiO2 (quartz). The influence of factors such as HCl concentration, addition amount of H2O2, temperature, and reaction time on the leaching performance of Y and Eu was investigated. The maximum leaching recoveries of Y (99.87%) and Eu (88.72%) were obtained at 4 M HCl, 0.2 cm3/g H2O2, 60 ℃ temperature, and 180 min of reaction time at a liquid-to-solid ratio of 7.5 cm3/g. Leaching kinetic results showed the best fit with the shrinking sphere model (1-(1-x)1/3)=kct), ensuring that the overall leaching process was governed by a chemical control mechanism. Activation energies of 42.35 and 33.28 kJ/mol were acquired for leaching of Y and Eu, respectively, at 40-70 ℃, which further supports the proposed chemical control leaching process.

In this study, the leaching process of a lead-bearing ore, consisting mainly of cerussite, in an ammonium citrate tribasic medium was investigated. The parameters including temperature, reagent concentration, particle size, and stirring speed were examined. During leaching process, the lead conversion rate increased with an increase in reagent concentration, reaction temperature, and stirring speed, and a decrease in particle size. The results show that about 95% of lead content was extracted from the samples with particle size range of +75-96 μm after 21 min leaching in 1.25 mol/L ammonium citrate tribasic solution at 800 r/min and 40°C. It was found that the leaching reaction followed the shrinking core model. The results indicated that ammonium citrate tribasic could be used as an effective leaching reagent for extracting lead from lead oxide ore.

Nuclear energy is considered as one of the most important energy resources in the world. Thorium (Th) has a significant potential to be used in electricity production by nuclear energy since its existence is not depended on the presence of another radioactive elements, and it has larger potential reserves than uranium. Bastnaesite ((Ce, La)CO3F) is one of the minerals from which Th can be economically extracted. In this study, solubility of bastnaesite containing ore obtained from Eskisehir, Turkey was investigated by leaching with H2SO4 and HNO3 in terms of leaching performance of thorium and some rare-earth elements (Ce, Nd, La). In this context, representative samples were taken from three different areas in Eskisehir-Kizilcaoren region, and a composite sample was prepared to be used for the leaching experiments. The effects of several parameters such as the solid ratio, leaching time, acid amount and pulp temperature, on dissolution efficiencies of Th, Nd, Ce and La was investigated. The best results were obtained using 3.42 mol/dm3 HNO3, solid–to–liquid ratio of 35%, 120 min leaching time and 60 oC temperature. Under these optimum conditions, the dissolution efficiencies of Th, Ce, Nd, and La were obtained as 94%, 82%, 77% and 70%, respectively.

Iron ore having high-sulfur content causes problems in the concentrate production, pelletizing, and steel-making processes and environmental issues such as sulfur dioxide emission during the concentrate pelletizing process, and effect on steel quality. The current study was focused on the removal of sulfur from iron ore concentrate using chemical leaching technique. Magnetite iron ore concentrate was chosen for this purpose. The results obtained from the study showed that more than 90% of the total sulfur content was removed from the iron ore concentrate by the chemical leaching. Effects of several parameters, including temperature, stirring speed, particle size, and use of organic solvent on the sulfur removal was investigated by a series of experimental conditions. After optimizing the experimental conditions, it was demonstrated that in addition to sulfur, more than 80% of phosphorus, another important impurity, was also removed from the iron ore concentrate. In addition, one of the major advantages of our proposed method was the transformation of mineral pyrites to useful byproducts such as elemental sulfur.

An improved method to model CIP plants by plant data is presented. The Turkish gold cyanide leaching CIP plants, Bergama Ovacik, Gumushane Mastra and Eskisehir Kaymaz were modeled by using gold concentrations of monthly carbon, solution and solids spot samples of adsorption tanks without a need of laboratory work. Five carbon adsorption models were used namely k-n, Nicol-Fleming, Dixon, Film Diffusion with Langmuir isotherm and Film Diffusion with Freundlich isotherm (Johns model). Several monthly obtained plant data were collected and modeled separately and model parameters as well as regression coefficient R2 values were found by non-linear regression. By comparing R2 values, the best fit model for the three CIP plants was determined as Film Diffusion with Langmuir Isotherm that R2 values were above 0.95. Thus, by using the best fit model, the Kaymaz plant was optimized for existing 49 Mg per hour ore feed tonnage and plant parameters were predicted according to planned feed tonnage increase to 120 Mg per hour.

In this paper, recovery of manganese and zinc from alkaline battery paste by leaching under atmospheric condition using elemental sulfur as a reductive agent and sulfuric acid was investigated. Different dissolution parameters, acid concentrations, liquid-to-solid ratios, reaction temperatures, leaching times and amounts of elemental sulfur were studied in detail. According to results, the Mn dissolution in reductive acidic media was an intermediate-controlled process with activation energy of 10.21±2.60 kJ/mol. After the leaching step, Mn and Zn were selectively precipitated from the leaching solution using sodium hydroxide. After solid/liquid separation, manganese(II,III) oxide (Mn3O4) was obtained by drying at 105 °C in air. Next, Mn3O4 was converted to manganese(IV) oxide (MnO2) by heating at 800 °C in air. After that the solution containing Zn(OH)42- was treated with sulfuric acid to form zinc hydroxide, separated and next converted to zinc oxide by heating at 600 °C in air. The final products were characterized by XRD. The results showed that the proposed process can be effectively used for recovery of Mn and Zn from alkaline batteries.

Copper flue dusts, or copper Cottrell dusts, from three types of copper smelting furnaces were leached with different ammonia-based reagents (ammonium chloride, ammonium carbonate and aqueous ammonia solutions) to dissolve the oxidised copper species via the formation of copper-ammonia complexes, so that most of the copper-accompanying metals, especially iron, remained in the solid residue. Such copper-bearing dusts are not only valuable secondary source of copper but also are considered as hazardous materials and cannot be dumped as such. Therefore, two procedures for copper dust treatment are proposed, one of them includes ammonium-based leaching, liquid-liquid extraction with LIX 860 (aldoxime), LIX 84 (ketoxime) or LIX 54 (β-diketone) and electrowinning to grade A copper cathode. The other one covers also ammonium-based leaching followed by cementation with zinc to copper cement as a final product.

Numerous solutions are used in the site to treat pollution, including remediation of heavy metals and hazardous wastes by solidification/stabilization (S/S) with cement as a binder. S/S is one of the most commonly methods used for treating inorganic wastes. The objective of this research was using unconfined compressive strength test, and EPA Toxicity Leaching Procedure TCLP method 1313, to test the effectiveness performance, and efficiency of the solidification/stabilization method for treatment of some heavy metals (Fe, Zn, Mn, Cr) contaminated sands using ordinary locally produced Portland Cement type A. In this study, three loads of pollution in three mix designs by contaminated sands were used. As a result of the unconfined compression test, it was observed that the value 1–15 MPa with OPC cement content 25% in the solidification/stabilization process was good enough to comply with the limited value set by the (US EPA). In addition, the concentration of zinc ions was 500 kg/mg, 1500 kg/mg, and 3000 kg/mg, which caused an increase in compressive strength in the early period of age, and a decrease at a later age. An increase in the iron ion concentration caused an increase in the compressive strength at a later age, the effective retention percentages were (97, 93.5, 96 and 92) for iron, zinc, manganese and chromium ions, respectively, which exceeded 3000 mg/kg initially. The high effectiveness in holding and retaining metals within the matrix of solidification/stabilization at the particle size above 9.5 mm was found as well. The samples (Mn and Cr) with the low amount of cement in the mix treatment were not able to retain the required TCLP regulatory limits value, and the initial extraction pH 4.9. However, the final pH 9.5 is alkanet and stabilization effects of the cement matrix.

The presence of inorganic elements in solid fuels is not only considered a direct source of problems in the furnace but is also connected with the release of pollutants into air during combustion. This article focuses on the sintering characteristics of biomass and coal ashes, in particular on the leaching processes, and their impact on the tendency to sinter ash. Biomass and coal ash with high alkali metal concentration can deposit in boiler sections and cause severe operating problems such as slagging, fouling and corrosion of boiler and heat exchanger surface, limiting heat transfer. Two biomass types and one coal ash with different origin and different chemical compositions were investigated. A sequential leaching analysis was employed in this study to elucidate the modes of occurrence of metals that can transform into fuel extract. Sequential leaching analysis was conducted as a two-step process: using distilled water in the first step and acetic acid in the second step. The chemical composition of ashes, before and after each step of the leaching processwas studied using ICP-OES method. The standard Ash Fusion Temperature (AFTs) technique was also employed to assess the sintering tendency of the tested samples. It was observed that the presence of key elements such as sodium, potassium, magnesium and sulphur (elucidated in the leaching process) plays a significant role in sintering process. The sintering tendency enhances when the concentration of these elements increases.

The purity of a quartz ore is relatively low at a $SiO_2$ content of 97.18%, and the main impurity in the ore is $Fe$, $Al$, and $Ca$ bearing minerals. The main component in an industrial waste bacteria (WJ) is polysaccharides, which may be used as depressors for inhibiting iron minerals in quartz flotation. Moreover, WJ belongs to microbial inhibitors because it is mainly composed of bacteria. As a result of this study, a concentrate grade of 99.88% at recovery over 80% was obtained under the condition of 2000 g/Mg WJ dosage, a grinding fineness of 70% -0.074 mm, pH 11.7, 400 g/Mg $CaCl_2$, and 800 g/Mg $NaOL$ in the flotation experiments for the quartz ore. Moreover, a $SiO_2$ grade of 99.97% at a recovery of 68.85% was obtained at an acid dosage of 40 kg/Mg by using mixed acid of $H_2SO_4$, $HCl$, $HNO_3$, and $HF$ in mass ratios of 20%, 30%, 20%, and 30%, respectively, in subsequent acid leaching of the quartz flotation concentrate. Zeta potential analysis before and after the interaction of quartz and hematite with WJ showed that WJ increased the zeta potential of hematite significantly but had little impact on the zeta potential of quartz, indicating stronger adsorption of WJ on hematite than on quartz. FTIR analysis showed that there exist not only –$COOH$, –$CH_2$–, and –$CH_3$, which are the functional groups of starch but also $NH_2$ and –$C=O-NH$– in WJ. The $NH_2$ and –$C=O-NH$– in WJ are the important groups for adsorption, so the depressing effect on hematite was better for WJ than starch.

Scandium and its compounds have excellent properties, and are widely used in cutting-edge fields such as optics, electronics, and alloys. Thus, scandium is an important strategic metal. However, scandium is extremely sparsely distributed in the earth's crust, rarely occurs as an independent mineral, and requires a complex recovery process. Therefore, the study of the extraction of scandium is of great practical significance. This study examined the leaching test and kinetics of scandium under the acid leaching system of refractory anatase ore. Under appropriate two-stage countercurrent leaching conditions, the first stage of the particle size of fraction of -0.074 mm 82.6%, initial H2SO4 concentration of 6 mol/L, leaching temperature of 100 °C, acid/solid ratio of 3 ml/g, stirring speed of 300 rpm, and leaching time of 50 min; and the second stage of the initial H2SO4 concentration of 11 mol/L, leaching temperature of 150 °C, acid/solid ratio of 4 ml/g, stirring speed of 300 rpm, and leaching time of 50 min, a scandium leaching rate of 96.98% was achieved. The kinetics of scandium leaching conformed to a shrinking-core model, and sulfuric acid concentration and temperature were the most important parameters affecting the scandium leaching rate. The kinetic analysis of scandium leaching at different sulfuric acid concentrations showed that as the concentration increased, the sulfuric acid leaching of scandium changed from being chemical reaction-controlled to internal diffusion-controlled, and the apparent reaction order was 1.2429. The kinetics of scandium leaching at different temperatures showed that the sulfuric acid leaching of scandium was reaction-controlled and the apparent activation energy was 42.21 kJ-mol-1.

The carbon-in-leach (CIL) process is one the most efficient methods of gold recovery from gold bearing ores. The efficiency of the leaching process greatly depends on the flow structure created by mechanical agitation (in some cases air agitation) in the leaching tanks. Residence time distribution (RTD) measurement was conducted in the CIL section of a gold processing plant in order to determine the flow structure in the first tank using the 131I radioactive tracer. The shape of the experimental data revealed that the flow behaviour in the tank was close to an ideal mixer. Modelling of the experimental data, however, revealed that the tank was not behaving as a single perfect mixer, but consisted of two mixing zones. The flow structure in the tank was best described by the “perfect mixers with exchange” model consisting of two mixing zones. The model allowed the determination of flow parameters including the mean residence time, flow rate and volumes of the mixing zones.

In this study, laboratory-scale experiments were carried out to investigate the effects of microwave-assisted alkaline leaching on the treatment of electric arc furnace dusts to recover zinc and lead. Microwave treatment is a new innovative technology in waste treatment and now is an attractive advanced inter-disciplinary field and also environmental friendly. The highest zinc extraction, 50.3% in 60 minutes using 5 M NaOH at 750 W and L:S ratio 20, and lead extraction up to 92.84% was achieved in these same conditions but in 30 minutes. Compared with conventional leaching, the top extraction rate using MW-assisted leaching was higher by 16% (Zn) and 26% (Pb). Zinc presents in the flue dust in the form of franklinite (ZnFe2 O4 ), its leaching in sodium hydroxide does not occur under the examined conditions, because it is enclosed in a matrix of iron.

The continuous changing technologies of electronic devices, mainly mobile phones cause that their life is shorten from year to year (even to 8-12 months); that is way there is a constantly increasing amount of generated waste. Such waste treatment to recover mainly copper and other base metals should be really profitable. The process of metals recovery could be done using different methods including pyro- and hydrometallurgical process. The paper describes the research of leaching process of Printed Circuit Boards (PCB) coming from waste mobile phones. As a leaching agent sulfuric acid was used with addition of hydrogen peroxides. Experiments were carried out for different temperature, acid concentration and addition of hydrogen peroxide. As a result the concentration of copper, zinc, iron and aluminium in the obtained solution was measured. The results were discussed.

Various types of waste materials containing zinc (e.g. dusts and sludges from gas dedusting process) are obtained in steel industry. The contents of Zn in these materials may vary considerably. Even a low concentration of zinc in recirculated products precludes their recycling in ferrous metallurgy aggregates. Long storage of this type of material can lead to contamination of soil and water by zinc compounds which can be leached out by acid rain, for example. This paper focuses on research involving alkaline leaching tests of low zinc content iron-bearing materials. These tests were preceded by the analysis of the elemental, phase and grain size composition, and analysis of the thermodynamic conditions of the leaching process. The main aim of research was to decrease the content of the zinc in the sludge to the level where it is suitable as an iron-bearing material for iron production (~1% Zn). Leaching at elevated temperatures (368 K, 60 min) has led to a decrease in the zinc content in the sludge of about 66%. The research revealed that long hour leaching (298 K, 100 hours) carried out at ambient temperatures caused a reduction in zinc content by 60% to the value of 1.15-1.2% Zn.

This paper presents the results of nonlinear statistical modeling of the bauxite leaching process, as part of Bayer technology for alumina production. Based on the data, collected during the year 2011 from the industrial production in the alumina factory Birač, Zvornik (Bosnia and Herzegovina), nonlinear statistical modeling of the industrial process was performed. The model was developed as an attempt to define the dependence of the Al2O3 degree of recovery as a function of input parameters of the leaching process: content of Al2O3, SiO2 and Fe2O3 in the bauxite, as well as content of Na2Ocaustic and Al2O3 in the starting sodium aluminate solution. As the statistical modeling tool, Adaptive Network Based Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) was used. The model, defined by the ANFIS methodology, expressed a high fitting level and accordingly can be used for the efficient prediction of the Al2O3 degree of recovery, as a function of the process inputs under the industrial conditions.

Cyanide is used in the leaching phase of hydrometallurgical recovery of gold. The toxicity and environmental risks have created a need for safer alternatives. There is a vast amount of information about gold extraction and a selection has been collected and formalized to be used in a decision support tool. The tool Auric Advisor uses case-based reasoning (CBR) to provide process alternatives for the user queries. The aim of this paper is to study leaching of gold with cyanide replacing alternatives such as ammonium thiosulfate, chloride-hypochlorite, thiourea and thiocyanate to provide new cases for the tool. The behaviour of gold was examined with electrochemical tests and weight loss measurements a using quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) were used to determine the dissolution rate. Based on literature, the dissolution rate determined for cyanide solution was 2.5 mgcm-2h-1. Based on polarisation experiments and potential measurements, the ammonium thiosulfate system with cupric ion as oxidant was estimated to dissolve gold slower than cyanide. In the QCM tests the chloride-hypochlorite alternative showed highest dissolution rate of 8.6 mgcm-2h-1 at the redox potential of 900 mV vs. SHE. The thiocyanate system with ferric ion dissolved gold at a rate of 3.4 mgcm-2h-1 at the redox potential of 620 mV vs. SHE. Thiourea system with ferric ion showed the dissolution rate of 1.65 mg cm-2 h-1 at the redox potential of 450 mV vs. SHE. The results of the rapid tests were comparable with literature and were included in the case base of the Auric Advisor decision-support tool.

Opis:
Process improvement and kinetic study on copper leaching from low-grade cuprite ores in sulfuric acid solution are presented in this paper. Effects of major leaching parameters on copper leaching efficiency are determined. The results indicate that copper minerals in the raw ores are mainly cuprites. The reaction rate of this ore increases with an increase in temperature, reaction time, sulfuric acid concentrations and decrease in the particle size of ore. Leaching of about 92.5% of copper is achieved using 0.125-0.074 mm ore particle size at a reaction temperature of 353 K for 180 min reaction time with 150 g/dm3 sulfuric acid. The solid/liquid ratio was maintained constant at 1:15. Leaching kinetic indicates experimental data complies with shrinking core mode (SCM). It is found in the study that agitation rate is not an influential factor on leaching rate and that the dissolution rate is controlled by surface chemical reaction. The average activation energy of the process is determined to be 45.28 kJ mol-1, and the reaction order of H2SO4 is 0.8093.

This paper investigates extraction of nickel and iron from a lateritic nickel ore from the Caldag region of Manisa in Turkey. The ore sample contains 1.2% Ni, 24.77% Fe and 0.062% Co. The process applied includes digestion with 40 wt-% sulfuric acid at 200 C for 60 min, roasting at 700 C for 15 min, leaching with water for 30 min at 1:5 solid/liquid ratio (by weight) and precipitation of the remaining iron at pH 3 and 60 C. In order to improve nickel and cobalt extractions using the digestion-roasting- leaching-precipitation process (DRLP), Na2SO4 addition in the roasting stage was examined. Under the optimum conditions and in the presence of Na2SO4, 86.2% Ni and 94.2% Co extractions were obtained with almost zero iron content. As a result, 2.07 g dm-3 Ni, 0.12 g dm-3 Co and 0.05 g dm-3 Fe could be achieved in the pregnant leach solution within nearly 2.5 hours.

Clay from Udi in Nigeria was mined, ground, and acid-leached at different concentrations of hydrochloric acid to produce adsorbents of varying properties. The raw and acid-leached samples were characterized using x-ray fluorescence (XRF) and Fourier transforms infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR) to examine the structural modifications in the clay as a result of acid-leaching. The analysis showed that the acid-leaching process caused several modifications of the clay samples. The surface area, Si/[Al + Fe + Mg] ratio, adsorption capacity were found to have increased in the acid-leached samples. The acid-leached samples were tested in order to ascertain their performance in bleaching palm oil and it was observed that the bleaching efficiency increased from 29.8% to 66.7%. The acid-leached sample prepared with 7M hydrochloric acid yielded an adsorbent that was efficient in bleaching palm oil under the experimental conditions. The isotherm analysis showed that the bleaching process followed the Freundlich equation.

This study focused on the extraction of nickel from a low-grade lateritic ore. The characterization of representative samples was done by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and microscopic mineralogical studies. Nickel was uniformly distributed in iron (hydr)oxide minerals. The pre-concentration of nickel was attempted by magnetic separation, but was unsuccessful. The effect of the type of lixiviant, acid concentration, S/L ratio, time, and temperature were investigated in the atmospheric leaching process. Based on the experimental data, optimum conditions for the maximum recovery of nickel were determined under the following conditions: 5 M H2SO4, 25% (w/v), 90 ºC, and two hours. Pre-calcination, for increasing nickel extraction by converting goethite to hematite, was carried out on raw ores at different times (30-180 minutes) and temperatures (180-540 ºC). Recovery was found increasing from 69 to 95% under the same conditions. Kinetic studies were conducted by fitting the data with Shrinking Core (SC) models. The study determined, from the estimate of activation energy, that the rate of reaction controlled by chemical reaction.

In this work extraction of copper and iron from a reverberatory furnace slag was studied. A two-step extraction procedure was followed. The first step was roasting of the slag in the presence of sulphuric acid at temperatures between 150 and 800oC. The second step was leaching of the resulting calcine with distilled water. The maximum copper extraction of about 94% was achieved. In this case, the slag was roasted at 250oC with sulphuric acid higher of about 33% than that stoichiometrically required, followed by water leaching of calcine at 50oC. About 55% of iron was also dissolved under these conditions. On the other hand, for the calcine obtained at sulphation temperature of 600oC, extraction of copper in a water leaching stage was still relatively high (about 79%), whereas that of iron was comparatively low (about 6%). Dissolution of copper and iron from the calcine was found to be very fast and was complete within the first few minutes. The water temperature in the leaching step was found to have no effect on extraction of copper and iron from the calcine in the range of 30 to 85oC.

Trioxoboric acid (H3BO3) is a white weakly soluble acid produced from boron minerals. This acid type was used for the first time in this study for ash and sulfur removal from coal. Ash and sulfur are the most important impurities in the content of coal and have significant effects on environmental pollution. It is possible to remove ash and sulfur by H3BO3 leaching. However, there have not been enough studies in this area and the performance of trioxoboric acid has not been fully demonstrated. In this study, leaching performance of trioxoboric acid and other strong acids (hydrofluoric, hydrochloric and sulfuric acids) has been demonstrated. Trioxoboric acid removed ash and sulfur from coal by 41.18% and 32.16%, respectively. This acid can compete especially with hydrochloric and sulfuric acid in sulfur removal. However, hydrofluoric acid provided the best results in ash and sulfur removal.

Opis:
It is demonstrated that amino acids such as glycine, betaine, and lysine may be applied as selective copper leaching agents in the process of hydrochemical oxidation of chalcopyrite at atmospheric pressure and in the temperature range 25÷65 °C. The advantage of the proposed method is its relative environmental friendliness. Solid samples of the initial mineral and leached chalcopyrite residues were analyzed by X-ray diffraction analysis, and Mössbauer and Raman spectroscopy. The results of the atomic absorption analysis showed that copper's extraction efficiency increased when the experiment's duration was raised and when the process temperature was higher. The leaching ability of amino acids was evaluated by the specific leaching rate of chalcopyrite in these reagents. Amino acid leaching was thought to be mainly due to the complexation of copper (II) glycinates, copper (II) betainates and copper (II) lysinates. This reaction can be enhanced by adding hydrogen peroxide to the system as an oxidant. It was determined that glycine was more effective as a leaching agent than betaine and lysine. Based on experimental data, it was assumed that the most possible mechanism is selective copper leaching due to the formation of chalcopyrite-based solid solution Cu1-XFeS2.

The most important approaches to formulate the equations constituting the physical and mathematical description of the leaching process are discussed. Turbulent mixing caused by density differentiation plays the principal role here. Poor understanding of this role and lack of its description are the fundamental deficiencies of past proposals. Model where brine concentration and flow through the cavern are dependent only on depth and time, is sufficiently good approximation.

Opis:
The main objective of the present study was an assessment of the possibility of uranium recovery from domestic resources in Poland. In the fi rst stage uranium was leached from the ground uranium ore by using acidic (sulfuric acid or hydrochloric acid) or alkaline (carbonate) solutions. The leaching efficiencies of uranium were dependent on the type of ore and it reached 81% for Dictyonemic shales and almost 100% for sandstones. The novel leaching routes, with the application of the helical membrane contactor equipped with rotating part were tested. The obtained postleaching solutions were concentrated and purifi ed using solvent extraction or ion exchange chromatography. New methods of solvent extraction, as well as hybrid processes for separation and purifi cation of the product, were studied. Extraction with the use of membrane capillary contactors that has many advantages above conventional methods was also proposed as an alternative purification method. The fi nal product U3O8 could be obtained by the precipitation of ‘yellow cake’, followed by calcination step. The results of precipitation of ammonium diuranate and uranium peroxide from diluted uranium solution were presented.

Opis:
Soil is essential for food production, and there is need practice sustainable soil management. This study was aimed to evaluate physical and chemical properties of soils and their management in three farming communities; Sangasumi (SGS), Gangkoen (GGK) and Gangbuen (GGB) of Southern Adamawa State, Nigeria. The intent is to encourage optimum land use planning and increase the efficiency in the use of soil resources. In the work, a digital Terrain Model (DTM) was generated from the map of the study area, and three elevation ranges were identified; 660-780m - representing the upper-slope in SGS, 540-660m - representing the middle-slope in GGK and 420-540m - representing the lower-slope in GGB, respectively. Three slope positions were delineated using the Geographic Information System (GIS) and their coordinates were obtained by means of a Handheld Geographic Positioning System (GPS). Three profile pits were dug on each of the locations and soil samples were collected in each of the identified horizon of the pits. Standard laboratory procedures were then used to determine soil physical and chemical properties. Herein, results for particle size analysis indicated that the soils were predominantly sand, ranging between 51% to 91% across the pedons and %sand was positively correlated with bulk density. Moreover, soil pH in each sample was slightly acidic to neutral (6.1-6.5 to 6.6-7.3), while organic carbon and total nitrogen levels were low (<1%, <0.15%) and available phosphorus levels were medium (10-20ppm). In contrast, magnesium was high (>1), sodium recorded up to 0.60cmol/kg, potassium was also high (>0.3) and %base saturation were generally medium to high (50-80 to >80). Results suggest the soils have potentials for arable farming. However, soil erosion hazards had affected parts of the fields; this lead to reduction in soil fertility and crop yields. Addition of organic and inorganic fertilizers and control of soil erosion will greatly improve soil fertility losses and increase crop yields.

Opis:
The experimental work is the most time consuming and expensive part of the process design. A case-based reasoning (CBR) methodology can be used to assist in the process design. Auric Adviser is a CBR system under development for recommendation of gold ore processing workflows. In Auric Adviser the knowledge in gold ore processing is represented in two models. The first model holds the knowledge needed to recommend process chains already used in industry. The second knowledge model is intended to recommend the most efficient unit processes based on research results. The objective of this study was to analyse the information richness of journal articles and other publications concerning single process steps of gold extraction. The aim was to study the applicability of these publications as a source for the second Auric Adviser knowledge model. In this study, 25 publications concerning leaching of gold were analysed and information was extracted in a case base. The case base was taken as either a process or experimental description with clearly defined differences to other descriptions. In total, 218 cases that described results of gold leaching were extracted from the sources. The analysis of descriptions showed that the knowledge necessary for design the second Auric Adviser model can be elicited from journal articles and other publications concerning single process steps. The trends in the case description were that the gold content and process outcome were usually well described. Nevertheless, the information richness varied in descriptions of raw materials, experimental arrangements but the results were often missing details. The incompleteness of information causes challenges in the process comparison although it does not prevent the CBR system to work.

The amount of waste printed circuit board (WPCB) increases continuously. There is an economic and environmental need to recover valuable metals from WPCBs. In this study, the applicability of oxidative pressurized acid leaching of WPCBs rich in copper and tin was investigated. The effect of leaching parameters such as temperature, partial oxygen pressure and chloride concentration on metal dissolution from WPCBs was studied in sulfuric acid media. It was shown that non-metallic elements present in WPCBs initiated gas formation, namely CO2 and CO, during oxidized pressure acid leach. Decomposition of plastic components already started at 90 °C with 1.5 MPa oxygen overpressure in the presence of 1 g/dm3 chlorides. Gas formation was shown to have a negative impact on the process since copper extraction was reduced to 27% compared to 80-90% extraction achieved from anode slimes used as a reference material. It was suggested that gas formation related to plastic components could have a severe impact on metal yields. The highest dissolution of tin equal to 36% was achieved at room temperature. It was found that higher temperature promoted tin hydrolysis.

The progress of civilization brings with it the development of advanced technologies and increased demand for electric and electronic equipment. That directly influences the increase of produced e-waste, called Waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE). Due to the fact that deficit and critical metals are running out throughout the World, and due to increased demand for those metals, their alternative source and recovery methods have to be found. As an alternative biotechnological methods can be used. The advantage of biological methods over chemical processes is its selectivity in regard to different metal groups, simplicity of technological process, economic effectivity (lower energy expenditure) and lack of negative impact on environment. The aim of this work was to compare the effectiveness of biological and chemical leaching of copper (Cu), nickel (Ni) and zinc (Zn) from circuit boards (PCBs).The experiment was conducted in variants which included factors such as temperature (24°C and 37°C) and speed of mixing. In case of all metals higher effectiveness was achieved in variants conducted in the temperature of 24°C and faster mixing than in temperature of 37°C and slower mixing. In case of cooper and zinc better results of metal removal were achieved in bioleaching variant. In case of nickel faster result of metal removal were achieved in chemical leaching, but at the end of the experiment the effectivity of chemical leaching and biological leaching was similar. The maximum efficiency of cooper, nickel and zinc release was adequately 100%, 90%, 65%.

Opis:
In the recycling of WEEE, two approaches are common: a pyrometallurgical or hydrometallurgical treatment, preceded by a mechanical and/or physical separation. In this study, twostep processing of unmodified waste samples of LCD screen inverters was investigated: hightemperature processing followed by acidic leaching under fixed conditions (1M H2SO4, 90 ℃, 1 bar). The analysis carried out concerned a correlation between the type of HT treatment (pyrolysis, incineration, or gasification) and the dynamics of metals’ leaching from samples pretreated this way. It was found that HT method can act as “thermal disintegration”, since it affects, to a varying degree, the structure of the samples and cause elimination of organics and carbonaceous residue (incineration/gasification). The greatest mass loss (~18%) and the most loosened structure was observed for the gasified sample. Varying oxygen potential in HT-processes correlates well with the leachability of thermally treated inverters. The incineration was found to be the most favorable for copper extraction (>95%) by acidic leaching due to oxidized form of Cu, whereas Cu leaching from pyrolyzed and gasified samples needed oxygen and was controlled by the oxygen supply achieving only 36/43% after 6 h. The course of Pd leaching was similar to copper, although with lower efficiencies; 47% of palladium was extracted from the incinerated sample, and only 4 or 7% from gasified and pyrolyzed samples, respectively. Au was leached immediately but only to a slight extent. Contrary to Pb, leaching of Zn, Sn, Sb, and Ni was gradual, probably due to the formation of alloys with copper.

Opis:
Permeability reduction is a major challenge in heap leaching, primarily caused by the accumulation of fines that move with the leaching agent, leading to the formation of dead zones and channeling within the heap. In the Aria copper beneficiation plant, the 0–2 mm fraction with a copper grade of 1.4% undergoes pre-separation prior to heap loading without further processing. This study investigated the potential of using the agglomeration method to improve permeability in the case of using the 0–2 mm fraction of ore. Mineral compounds, such as sodium silicate and calcium sulfate, and non-ionic, cationic, and anionic polymer compounds, were used in the agglomeration process. The strength of interparticle bonding was evaluated by measuring the fine migration percentage (FMP) in the soak test. The results revealed that agglomerates produced using non-ionic compounds had the highest bonding strength, with an FMP of 3.89%, the lowest of all the compounds tested. This enhanced bonding strength was attributed to the combined influence of hydrogen bonding forces and van der Waals forces.

Sludge from cardboard mill is most commonly landfilled, but it could also be recycled on-site into production or reused in some other way. In this study the use of sludge from cardboard mill as stabilizing agent in the stabilization treatment of cadmium polluted sediment was examined. The effectiveness of treatment and long-term leaching behavior of cadmium was evaluated by determining the cumulative percentage of cadmium leached, diffusion coefficients (De) and by applying different leaching tests (semi-dynamic test, toxicity characteristic leaching procedure, waste extraction test). In order to simulate the “worst case” leaching conditions, the semi-dynamic leaching test was modified using 0.014 M acetic acid (pH = 3.25) and humic acids solution (20 mg l-1 TOC) as leachants instead of deionized water. A diffusion-based model was used to elucidate the controlling leaching mechanisms. Applied treatment was effective in immobilizing cadmium irrespective of high availability in the untreated sample. The controlling leaching mechanism appeared to be diffusion, which indicates that a slow leaching of cadmium could be expected when the cardboard mill sludge as stabilization agent is applied.

Opis:
Contamination of soil with heavy metals has become a worldwide environmental problem, and receives great attention. In this study, we aim to investigate soil pollution level affected by an industrial district nearby. The total amount of typical heavy metals in the soils (Hengyang Songmu Industrial Park, Hunan Province, China) was analyzed. In addition, the fraction analysis and laboratory simulation leaching via different pH rainwater was carried out to study the migration and transformation of heavy metals. The main results show that the contents of Cu, Zn, Pb, Cr and Cd in the samples were higher than the soil background values in Hunan Province. The heavy metals forms, analyzed by sequential extraction method, show that the proportion of the unstable form of Cd, Zn and Pb was more than 50%. Igeo values indicate that the heavy metal pollution degree of soil sample #5 at the investigated area is recorded in the order of Cd(6.42), Zn(2.28), Cu(1.82), Pb(1.63), and Cr(0.37). Cu, Zn, Pb, Cr and Cd in this area could pose a potential leaching risk to the environment which may affect the food chain and constitute a threat to human health. It would be necessary to take steps to stabilize and monitor the heavy metals in soil.

Sparse distribution of uranium, gold, boron and other minerals deposits are developed by the in-situ leaching (ISL) method. As a mineral, uranium is considered and the sulfuric acid is used as a solvent reagent in the governing reaction describing of uranium leaching process. At the problem decision the following assumptions was applied: the medium is homogeneous and isotropic, the density of solution and layer are constant, and solution flow on the layer border doesn't exist. Mathematical model of process is based on mass conservation equation, Darcy law, and transfer equation of reagent concentration in liquid phase, equation of useful element concentration in solid phase, and its transition to liquid phase. Distribution of hydro dynamical pressure, velocity field, distribution of uranium concentration in layer, reagent concentration and useful element concentration in product solution are obtained.

The XRF analysis confirmed the assumption of shales constituents mobility due to the water-rocks interaction. The mobility of studied constituents was expressed by means of variations in content of individual elements. Increased pH of leachates obtained as a result of water based leaching medium indicated releasing of alkaline origin components such as Ca, Rb, Mo, Sr. Measurements of TOC of the leachates indicated low levels of dissolved organic carbon.

Anatase, as an important titanium resource, is attracting more and more attention in research and application. In this study, an efficient process of comprehensively extracting the titanium and other valuable elements from the anatase mineral was proposed. The effect of particle size, stirring speed, initial sulphuric acid concentration, solid-to-liquid ratio, and reaction temperature on the leaching rate of titanium from anatase was investigated. Under appropriate two-stage countercurrent leaching conditions, with the first stage of the liquid-to-solid ratio of 1/3 g/cm3, reaction temperature of 120 °C, initial acid concentration of 11 mol/dm3, residence time of 30 min, stirring speed of 200 rpm, and the second stage of the liquid-to-solid ratio of 1/3 g/cm3, reaction temperature of 200 °C, initial acid concentration of 13 mol/dm3, residence time of 30 min, and stirring speed of 200 rpm, over 99% TiO2, 99% Al2O3, and 97% Sc2O3 were extracted respectively with quartz still remained in the residue. X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence spectrometer, and scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive spectroscopy were used to characterize the anatase samples before and after the leaching. Additionally, the leaching kinetics analysis indicated that both acid concentration and temperature were the most significant parameters for the leaching process. And, the titanium leaching reaction rate was controlled by the diffusion of reactants through the residual layer.

Opis:
Jarosite and neutral leaching residue (NLR) are the greatest environmental problems of hydrometallurgical zinc production due to their high quantity and hazardous content. Pyrometallur-gical processes, such as the Waelz process, could be applied to recover valuable metals present in this waste. The paper investigates the possibility of forming environmentally stable Waelz slag after the Waelz process of jarosite and NLR. Waelz slag, obtained using CaO as a conventional alkaline additive in the Waelz process, showed high As and Sb release after the EN 12457-4 standard leaching test. Multiphase equilibrium composition calculations indicated that As and Sb were present as volatile and migratory species in the slag. In order to obtain Waelz slag with more stable matrices that would encapsulate and immobilize pollutants, MgO additions to CaO and different cooling conditions of the slag were further investigated. The efficiency of modification in additives composition and cooling conditions was assessed by EN 12457-4 leaching test and chemical and microstructural characterization (XRF and SEM-EDS analyses) of the Waelz slags. The results show that addition of MgO does not reduce the efficiency of the process, even more it increases leaching resistance of the slags. Concentrations of all investigated metals (As, Ba, Cu, Mo, Pb, Sb, Zn) after the leaching test were below defined limits for non-hazardous waste. Microstructural analyses revealed that MgO remained inert during Waelz process, and thus favoring the formation of amorphous stable structure, which was enhanced by increased cooling rate. All investigated Waelz slags with MgO additions are suitable for further use or safe disposal.

Opis:
The dissolution of smithsonite in boric acid solutions was investigated. The influence of the reaction temperature, acid concentration, solid-to-liquid ratio, particle size and stirring speed on the zinc extraction were determined in the experiments. The results show that the dissolution rate increases with increasing acid concentration and reaction temperature, and with decreasing particle size and solid-to-liquid ratio. The dissolution results were analyzed by reaction control models. The activation energy of smithsonite in boric acid solution was also calculated.
