    Can correspondence from the 19th century have historical value? By specifying the thematic scope and quotations from letters exchanged between Józef Ignacy Kraszewski and Karol Estreicher for the years 1867–1886, I try to prove that this collection can be the subject of biographical, historical, bibliological and social communication research.

    The manuscript materials left by Karol Estreicher, which have lasted to our times, constitute a valuable historical source not only because of the fact that their owner lived in a period rich in events important for the history of Polish bibliography, literature, or the Polish nation itself, but also because the written legacy of this director of the Jagiellonian Library can also be analysed with regard to his workshop, which consisted of materials and notes. One of the manuscripts included in Estreicher’s diaries contains his first notes and fragments of the text entitled A Memory of Bruno Bielawski. Their version published after Estreicher’s death, clearly echoes those first essays, although it is not so emotionally tinged. The manuscript, quoted as a whole, is an excellent testimony of the intimacy which existed between Estreicher and Bielawski, as well as of the history of Estreicher’s posthumous note devoted to his friend, who was also a publisher and a poet.
    Materiały rękopiśmienne po Karolu Estreicherze, które przetrwały do naszych czasów, to cenne źródło historyczne. Nie tylko dlatego, że był on świadkiem epoki bogatej w wydarzenia istotne dla historii bibliografii, literatury czy narodu polskiego. Spuściznę po tym dyrektorze Biblioteki Jagiellońskiej można też analizować pod kątem warsztatu, jakim były jego materiały i notatki. Jednym z rękopisów włączonych między karty dzienników Estreichera są pierwsze notatki i fragmenty tekstu do Wspomnień o Brunonie Bielawskim. Ich wersja opublikowana po śmierci Estreichera wyraźnie nawiązuje do tych pierwszych szkiców, nie jest jednak tak zabarwiona emocjonalnie. Przytoczony w całości rękopis doskonale pokazuje, w jakim stopniu zażyłości był Estreicher z Bielawskim oraz jak powstawała nota pośmiertna poświęcona przyjacielowi, poecie i wydawcy.

    This article is based on a manuscript of the bibliographer and the director of the Jagiellonian Library, Karol Estreicher (1827–1908) from the collection of the Society of Fine Arts Friends in Cracow. These poems are collected in a volume entitled Leaving the Stage and they portray the theatre life of the actress Sylwia Jutkiewicz (born on 15th June 1871). They are excellent evidence of the dependence of actors on both their environment and the management of the theatre, and also of the life behind the scenes. The poems are preceeded by letters from authors and theatre critics to whom Karol Estreicher sent the manuscript in order to obtain their opinions about it. The described material as a whole is an interesting contribution to the history of the nineteenth century Cracow theatre.

    Opis:
    The wall hanging which adorned the drawing room of the Estreichers – Professor Stanisław Estreicher, the Rector of the Jagiellonian University, and his wife Helena née Longchamps de Berier – was made at the famous textile manufacture of the Count Potocki family, operating in the years 1878–1939 in Buchach, Podoliya. It is one of the textiles which were manufactured in the workshops owned by Oskar Potocki, which on the turn of the 19th/20th century manufactured silk hangings, decorative textiles, fabrics for Polish national costumes (żupan) and Polish sashes. The wall hanging (silk, metallic thread, jacquard technique) with motifs modelled after Italian Renaissance textiles (a rhomboid net created by flower springs with flower bush motifs inside the eyes of the net, and bordure with motifs of palmettes arranged alternately in rows) was made by a weaver from the Nagórzański family, in Count. Oskar Potocki’s workshop, between 1897 and 1904. The Jagiellonian University Museum at Collegium Maius has seven Buchach hangings, including one with the motif of Polish nobility sashes from Ignacy Jan Paderewski’s collection, also manufactured by Oskar Potocki’s workshop.

    he subject of attention as well as the bibliographic and librarian inquiry is the first biography of Saint Casimir that was written in Polish. The Saint was mentioned by Piotr Skarga in the seventh edition of Lives of the Saints (Krakow 1610) when the author incorporated his own biography of St. Casimir into the collection. Skarga also added information that this biography written in Polish was published in 1606. Thanks to this information, bibliographers managed to establish that the print was published in Vilnius and that its author was Chryzostom Wołodkowicz (Wołodkiewicz), as was believed – a soldier of the military commandeer Jan Karol Chodkiewicz, later a writer of Samogitia. The information was most fully popularized by Bibliografia polska (Polish bibliography) by Karol Estreicher (vol. 33, published by Stanisław Estreicher, Krakow 1939). However, the print was only known by its title, and its copy had not been described. The author of the article investigated the history of the information about the print and established that it was first mentioned by bibliographers and Jesuit heraldic officers in the 17th and 18th centuries (Wojciech Wijuk Kojałowicz and especially Kasper Niesiecki). Following this path, the author assumed that the copy should be in Lviv or one of its neighbouring cities. His intuition was rewarded and the copy was found in the Lviv library. As a result, the author described the copy and on its basis corrected the information about its author.

    The article presents the outline of the 100th birth anniversary celebrations of Karol Estreicher in the year 1927. Scientific and popular texts by Polish bibliologists, publicists and journalists published in the journals in the years 1927–1928 were analyzed. Particular attention was drawn to rare book publications by Jan Muszkowski and Ksawery Świerkowski, who were the researchers of bibliographer’s legacy. The vast majority of texts aimed to popularize the figure of K. Estreicher, scientific papers revealing facts about bibliographer’s life and his achievements were published occasionally.
    W artykule przedstawiono zarys obchodów setnej rocznicy urodzin Karola Estreichera, które przypadły w 1927 roku. Przeanalizowano naukowe i popularne teksty pióra polskich bibliologów, publicystów i dziennikarzy, które ukazały się na łamach czasopism w latach 1927–1928 oraz nieliczne publikacje książkowe, których autorami byli badacze spuścizny bibliografa okresu międzywojennego – Jan Muszkowski i Ksawery Świerkowski. Większość scharakteryzowanych tekstów miało na celu popularyzację postaci Estreichera w społeczeństwie, znacznie rzadziej powstawały opracowania naukowe, jak np. przyczynki, których zadaniem było ujawnianie wątków z życia i osiągnięć bibliografa.

    Plus ratio quam vis, or, the career of a sentence Although the Jagiellonian University was established as early as in 1364, its widelyrecognized motto was chosen and inscribed on the portico leading from the Assembly Hall to Copernicus Hall much later, only in the mid-twentieth century. In 1952, Professor Karol Estreicher Jr., the head of the University Museum, came across a sentence which he considered “worth being the Jagiellonian University’s motto” (the inscription was eventually carved on the portico in 1964). Apparently, all that Estreicher knew was that the phrase plus ratio quam vis was “a part of a Latin proverb.” He had no idea whatsoever of its author or the original context in which it had been used. Frequently (still too frequently, in truth) the phrase is quoted as coined by Cornelius Gallus, usually labeled, after Ovid, the first of the elegiac poets of Rome. The mistake is justifiable, at least to some extent, as the actual author of the poetic work in which the hemistich appears was for quite a long time mistaken for Cornelius Gallus. After Pomponius Gauricus’s edition of Cornelii Galli Fragmenta (Venice, 1501 die. XII. Ianuarii, which actually means 1502, as the date is indicated more veneto), the elegiac oeuvre by Maximianus, an author active in sixth-century Italy, was, so to speak, redefined as Gallus’s. Until the late eighteenth century the false attribution continued to be repeated by many other editors, who in fact very willingly published collections of the Roman love poets, Catullus, Tibullus, Propertius, and ‘Gallus’ (= Maximianus). It is to some point ironic that in the modern era Maximianus was so easily deprived of the ‘copyright’ to his own poetry, considering that earlier, in the Middle Ages, he was an author (relatively) well-known (under his real name) and even read in and recommended for schools. This aspect brings us back to our main topic here, i.e. the choice of Maximianus’s phrase as the motto of the Jagiellonian University, one of the oldest universities in the world. Karol Estreicher himself was presumably not aware of this but Maximianus was indeed studied in the Kraków Academy in mid-fifteenth century (as two manuscripts, BJ 1954 and 2141, preserved in the Jagiellonian Library, clearly indicate). He was studied for his vivid descriptions of old age (for which he was  celebrated among many medieval commentators and theorists of teaching, who apparently were not at all embarrassed by the fact that their students, when reading Maximianus, might have also read a laus Mentulae) and for his sententiositas. What is more, the Jagiellonian Library possesses a considerable collection of incunabula and old prints containing Maximianus’s (or ‘Gallus’s’) work. So paradoxically, Karol Estreicher could not have chosen better. The motto of UJ is related to its history, in the sense that it is taken from an author whose work was on the reading list in the Academy in the later Middle Ages, it is concise, intelligent, significant, and ‘decent,’ even though it was originally expressed by a poet who was not less efficient when coining memorable sententiae than when singing the praises of Mentula, the embodiment of human corporeality.

    W artykule opisano akcję ratowania polskich dóbr kultury w czasie II wojny światowej. Omówiono działania podjęte tuż przed wybuchem wojny w 1939 roku przez najważniejsze narodowe instytucje (muzea, galerie) oraz prywatnych kolekcjonerów. Cenne zbiory były pakowane i ewakuowane w bezpieczne miejsca w kraju lub za granicą. Karol Estreicher jako sekretarz gen. Władysława Sikorskiego dokumentował straty kultury polskiej pod okupacją niemiecką. Dyrektor warszawskiego Muzeum Narodowego Stanisław Lorentz zabezpieczał zbiory już od kwietnia 1939 r., a w czasie okupacji kierował powstałym w muzeum ośrodkiem ochrony muzeów i zbiorów. Powstała w listopadzie 1939 r. tajna Komisja Rewindykacji i Odszkodowań dokumentowała straty powstałe w czasie działań wojennych i grabieży. Sowiecka ofensywa z 1945 roku przyniosła kolejne zagrożenia rabowania i dewastacji ocalałych zabytków. Po wojnie rozpoczął się żmudny proces odszukiwania i odzyskiwania dóbr kultury. Było to możliwe dzięki osobistemu zaangażowaniu pokolenia, które ratowało polskie zabytki.
