The paper presents an explication of semantic differences between the two Italian verbs, venire and andare, in a pragmatic perspective, i.e. referring to the presupposition. A distinction is initially made between presuppositions, on the one hand, inherent in some lexical items, syntactic structures and prosodic features and, on the other, those "generated" by specific speech acts. The presuppositions inherent in both of these verbs permit an exhaustive contrastive description of their occurrences, even in non-deictic uses and transpositions from direct to indirect speech, which constitutes a contribution to the didactics of Italian as a foreign language.

Since antiquity man has been studying irony, it has always been in the center of a continuous debate of scholars of many different scientific disciplines: from Socrates to Aristophanes, from Plato and Aristotle to Cicero and Quintilianus, St. Thomas Aquinas, Baldassarre Castiglione, to the German Romantics. Irony is a world with many acceptations: for this reason, as irony is a rethorical component and a very important element of italian language and culture, it is a very interesting element, which can be used in glottodidactics. The following pages provide a brief overview on the various conceptions of irony, then move on to the suggestion of practical exercises where irony can be used in teaching italian language.

Food and, consequently, the language that describes it represent one of the areas of culture and language in which there has been the strongest assertion of an identity model. This is the result of the sum of different local components. Until the beginning of the 20th century (essentially until the lesson of Pellegrino Artusi), the gastronomic lexicon had moved toward Frenchizing models (i.e. Francesco Leonardi’s Apicio moderno). During the last century, it rapidly descended into an essentially national dimension but also with a kind of “globalization” of the typical product, whereby it is natural to find Sicilian cannoli in Bozen and strudel in Palermo), and finally local, with the revaluation of local products (for example, with the defense and valorization of slow food). Added to this is the progressive expansion of the space that the language of food has in dictionaries and also in the “vocabolario di base” of Italian (significant in this regard are the entries made in the Nuovo De Mauro with respect to GRADIT): precisely by starting from the description of the lexicon of food in the Italian lexicography of use, an interpretation of the relationship between Italian, regionalism and dialectalism in the describing of an identity share of the Italian lexicon will be proposed.

This article presents the issue of linguistic policy and the attitude of educational authorities towards dialects from the point of view of the multi-lingual and multiculture Italian society. Due to specific historical conditions the linguistic situation in Italy is characterized by a high degree of heterogeneity -numerous dialects exist alongside the national language. After the period of the political unity of Italy in 1861 the educational authorities have had to tackle two problems: the necessity of having to choose a linguistic norm and also mutual relations between the language and the dialects. Those issues were and still are highly controversial and are subject to heated polemics as the answer to the question of whether to accept dialects or eliminate them from school education has never been found.

The article presents the classification of symbolic and conventional gestures used in communication otherwise known as quasi-linguistic gestures. The author classified them into two types i.e. direct gestures and indirect gestures otherwise known as linguistic calques. In the present article the first type is presented in detail with a division into the following subtypes deictic, iconic, symbolic and ideographic-metaphoric. Prepositions are highly polysemous items i.e. they are used in various semantic and syntactic contexts. In the theory elaborated by Johnson (1987) and Lakoff (1987), image schemas have been applied to the analysis of the meaning of prepositional phrases. These structured wholes allow for the interpretation of the prepositional phrases both in spatial contexts (locational and directional) and in their metaphorical extensions. The analysis of the preposition in in Italian in spatial contexts leads to the conclusion that the unit in is a linguistic tool that engenders the container schema in whatever spatial context (static or dynamic) it appears. In dynamic contexts the container schema structures only the final location of the trajector which is located in the inner part of the landmark. Directional movement is structured with a path schema built up into the verb stem. The in phrases out of the context (without a static or dynamic predicate) can receive both in or into interpretation. There is only a partial overlap between the uses of the preposition in in Italian and in Polish, which is due to different categorisations of spatial relations in both languages. The Polish equivalents of in phrases in Italian are the following: w+loc, w+acc, na+loc, na+acc i do+gen. They involve different image schemas including the container schema. The first structure w+loc is modelled by the container schema, the second in+acc by the path and container schema, the third na+loc by the support and contiguity schema, the fourth na+acc by the path and support and contiguity schema and the fifth do+gen by the endpoint schema. These correspondences may result useful in the teaching/learning process of prepositional units.

For many years, the translation has not been recommended and has even been banned in language teaching and learning. Recently, it seems to regain some success at this field. The aim of the article is to show how Italians express their emotions when changing the code from Italian to dialect on the example of the Talamona’s dialect. At the beginning, it was presented what emotions are and in which categories they should be considered, the specificity of the Talamona’s dialect and what the change of code is. The theory is supported by examples of change of code from Italian to dialect. The result of the work is to show that the respondents from Talamona very often change the code from Italian to dialect due to their emotionality. The article introduces the concept of change of code and shows how emotionality affects it.

The aim of the paper is to analyse the Italian medical terminology, in particular will be taken into consideration the link between names of different illnesses and rhetoric procedures that might have influenced their lexical form. The examples of medical nomenclature will enable to illustrate the attitude towards the concept of illness and to show the complexity of phenomena perception and the impossibility to understand them completely. For this reason literary tropes, especially metonymy, enable to create terminology, although it will be never enough sufficient to guarantee the highest precision of these concepts.
W niniejszym artykule zostanie przedstawiona analiza włoskiego języka medycznego, w szczególności uwaga zostanie poświęcona związkom między nazwami poszczególnych chorób a figurami retorycznymi, które wpłynęły na ich utworzenie. Przykłady zaczerpnięte z nomenklatury medycznej posłużą do zilustrowania nastawienia względem choroby w celu wykazania złożoności postrzegania zjawisk oraz niemożliwości całkowitego ich zrozumienia. Z tej przyczyny figury retoryczne, w szczególności metonimia, ułatwia tworzenie terminologii specjalistycznej, mimo że nie jest ona nigdy wystarczająca do zagwarantowania precyzji pojęciowej.

In some cases, the teaching of Italian as an L2/LS language continues to perpetuate gender stereotypes, sexist or discriminatory elements. When this is not the case, however, it often fails to offer those approaching the study of Italian the tools and materials to address relevant issues and themes in the contemporary debate such as gender identity and the importance of using inclusive language. Aware that the didactics of Italian can be a fundamental tool for building a context of coexistence of differences, we want to reflect on the Italian situation and present some didactic proposals that can allow to combine in the Italian classroom a language education a reflection on gender identity.

Celem artykułu jest analiza błędów ortograficznych występujących w pracach pisemnych polskojęzycznych studentów uczących się języka włoskiego jako języka obcego. Pojawiające się błędy związane są z nieodłącznym zjawiskiem, jakie towarzyszy procesowi uczenia się języka obcego, tak zwanej interferencji międzyjęzykowej. W artykule przedstawione zostaną problemy dotyczące: a) zastępowania grafemów włoskich ich odpowiednikami występującymi w alfabecie polskim, b) braku podwojeń identycznych liter, c) dopisywania w internacjonalizmach dodatkowej litery występującej w pisowni polskiej, d) zastępowania liter oznaczających spółgłoski dźwięczne bezdźwięcznymi, e) błędnego stosowania wielkiej i małej litery oraz f) pisowni hiperpoprawnej.
The aim of the studyis to trace spelling errors occurring in the written works of Polish-speaking students learning Italian as a foreign language. The resulting errors are related to the inherent phenomenon that accompanies the process of learning a foreign language, the so-called inter-lingual interference. The article presents: a) issues related to the replacement of Italian graphs with their counterparts in the Polish alphabet, b) the absence of identical letters, c) the insertion of additional letters in Polish spelling, d) the substitution of consonants for voiceless consonants, e) misapplication of upper and lower case letters, and f) hyperpolic spelling.

Picturebooks (and silent books, with images only and without words) are children’s books commonly considered suitable only for young children of pre-school age or in the earliest years of schooling. For this reason, picturebooks are mostly neglected in teaching in higher educational stages. Nevertheless, the educational potential of picturebooks is considerable, especially in the later years of primary school. For example, in Italian language teaching, they can be extraordinary tools for planning didactic projects that allow instructors to integrate the teaching/learning of all linguistic skills and of metalinguistic reflection, which are the main elements in the curricula related to Italian language teaching in Italian-speaking countries and contexts. The article aims to show the validity of the above claim by establishing a possible classification of picturebooks into six distinct types and by describing some didactic projects and activities developed in primary schools in Canton Ticino (Italian Switzerland). Focusing on the pleasure of reading engaging stories and on motivation, picturebooks enable teachers to pursue ambitious and challenging goals, such as creating one or more new picturebooks inspired by the one read initially or transposing a picturebook into a theatre script. At the same time, picturebooks enable students to develop their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.
Gli albi illustrati (e la variante dei silent books, cioè gli albi di sole immagini) sono libri per l’infanzia considerati da molti idonei solo ai bambini in età prescolare o nei primissimi anni di scolarizzazione, e per questo per lo più trascurati a livello di insegnamento negli ordini scolastici successivi. In realtà, le potenzialità didattiche degli albi illustrati, caratterizzati negli esempi più riusciti da un perfetto connubio tra parole e immagini, sono enormi, in particolare per la scuola primaria: per ciò che riguarda la didattica dell’italiano, ad esempio, si rivelano dei supporti straordinari per un’impostazione di tipo progettuale che permetta di integrare l’insegnamento/apprendimento di tutte le abilità linguistiche e della riflessione sulla lingua, cioè dei perni sui quali si reggono i programmi e i piani di studio relativi alla lingua italiana dei paesi e dei contesti italofoni. L’articolo si propone di sostanziare questa convinzione attraverso la definizione di una possibile classificazione degli albi illustrati in sei distinte tipologie e la contestuale descrizione di alcuni percorsi didattici sviluppati in scuole primarie del Canton Ticino (Svizzera italiana), incentrati sull’utilizzo di albi illustrati. Puntando sul piacere di leggere storie coinvolgenti e sulla motivazione, l’albo illustrato consente di lavorare in vista di obiettivi ambiziosi e stimolanti (ad esempio, la redazione di uno o più albi illustrati nuovi, ispirati a quello scelto all’inizio del percorso, oppure la trasposizione teatrale del testo di partenza), puntando nel contempo a sviluppare le competenze degli allievi per ciò che riguarda il parlato e l’ascolto, la lettura e la scrittura.

Using the tools of rhetoric and critical discourse analysis, the paper describes the discourse of slimming diets in the Italian men’s magazine “For Men”. The study covered 49 monthly issues published in 2013—2022. The research has shown the presence of numerous persuasive techniques based on building the credibility of theses presented to the readers (mostly using the argument of authority). There are numerous references to popular topoi that increase the competitiveness of the proposed nutritional regimes. Some techniques influencing the emotions of readers were used to a lesser extent. The discourse of diets is present in every issue of the magazine under study, and much space is devoted to it, creating the impression that it is an important and interesting topic for contemporary Italian readers (permanent columns present). In addition, phenomena such as scientization and medicalization of nutrition, fragmentation of the male body were observed. Many of the examples cited could be found in the Italian women’s press published about 15 years ago.

The purpose of this is to analyze the toponyms present in some Italian-Polish and Polish-Italian bilingual dictionaries. After selecting a “skeleton” of the dictionaries that trace part of the history of the bilingual lexicography in question, we move on to the analysis of the toponyms used in the dictionaries. In a lexicultural context, understood as the transfer of the cultural elements of a given language, we observe the choices made by lexicographers of the different eras and try to understand the reasons, sometimes of a personal nature or dictated by the historical context, or sometimes influenced by the political system in a given country. At the same time, we want to highlight the evolution in the diachronic field that toponyms and their equivalents have had in the dictionaries in question, as well as their value in teaching a particular foreign language.

This paper presents the results of a new study investigating object clitic production by Polish learners of L2 Italian in different syntactic environments. Object clitic pronouns have different distributional properties in Italian and Polish. Additionally, Polish is less restrictive than Italian in allowing object drop in pragmatically felicitous contexts. New findings indicate the presence of object clitic omissions in language production, especially in the context of clitic left dislocation (CLLD). It is proposed that Italian CLLD constructions are particularly demanding for Polish learners, since both syntactic and discourse-pragmatic requirements support clitic omission in their native language.
Niniejszy artykuł przedstawia wyniki pracy badawczej poświęconej produkcji zaimków klitycznych w funkcji dopełnienia przez osoby uczące się języka włoskiego jako drugiego języka (L2). Zaimki klityczne w tych dwóch językach nie zawsze występują na tym samym miejscu w zdaniach. Ponadto w języku polskim dopełnienia domyślne są bardziej dopuszczalne. Najnowsze wyniki wskazują na występowanie pominięcia zaimków litycznych w funkcji dopełnienia w produkcji językowej, zwłaszcza w kontekście przesunięcia dopełnienia w lewo (Clitic Left Dislocation, CLLD). Ponadto sugerują, ze konstrukcje CLLD stanowią szczególne wyzwanie dla polskojęzycznych osób uczących się języka włoskiego, gdyż wymogi syntaktyczne i pragmatyczne wspierają pominięcie zaimków klitycznych w języku polskim.

Un approccio interdisciplinare che coinvolge la linguistica, la retorica e la teoria dell’argomentazione aiuta a rivelare come la gente argomenta le proprie opinioni e decisioni. Anche se la pandemia è un’esperienza comune, i relativi rischi vengono percepiti in modi diversi. Per alcuni, la vera minaccia è il Covid-19 e il rimedio è la vaccinazione. Per gli altri, invece, il rischio vero e proprio è il vaccino, mentre il «rimedio» è il rifiuto di farsi vaccinare. Giustificando le proprie opinioni in merito, gli internauti italiani fanno riferimento ai valori comuni (come la vita, la salute, la responsabilità, ecc.). Tuttavia, poiché gli internauti diagnosticano i rischi in modi differenti, fanno uso dei valori condivisi in modi ben diversi. Nel presente contributo, le opinioni di chi è pro o contro la vaccinazione sono analizzate da tre prospettive complementari. La prima concerne diversi modi in cui i sostenitori e i no vax concepiscono vari valori. La seconda svela come, servendosi degli stessi luoghi comuni, i sostenitori e i no vax creano diverse gerarchie di valori, fondamentali per le loro rispettive decisioni. La terza, infine, esplora le differenze nei modi di usare i valori in vari schemi argomentativi usati nelle controversie sulla vaccinazione.
Interdyscyplinarne podejście, obejmujące językoznawstwo, retorykę i teorię argumentacji, pomaga ujawnić, w jaki sposób ludzie argumentują swoje opinie i decyzje. Chociaż pandemia jest powszechnym doświadczeniem, ryzyko z nią związane jest postrzegane na odmienne sposoby. Dla niektórych prawdziwym zagrożeniem jest Covid-19, a lekarstwem – szczepienia. Dla innych natomiast prawdziwym zagrożeniem jest szczepionka, a „lekarstwem” odmowa szczepienia. Uzasadniając swoje poglądy w tej kwestii, włoscy internauci odwołują się do wspólnych wartości (takich jak życie, zdrowie, odpowiedzialność itp.). Ponieważ jednak internauci w różny sposób diagnozują ryzyko, wykorzystują wspólne wartości w zupełnie odmienny sposób. W niniejszym artykule poglądy zwolenników i przeciwników szczepień są analizowane z trzech komplementarnych perspektyw. Pierwsza z nich dotyczy różnic w pojmowaniu rozmaitych wartości przez ludzi. Druga pokazuje, jak używając tych samych toposów zwolennicy i przeciwnicy szczepień tworzą odmienne hierarchie wartości, na podstawie których podejmują decyzje. Trzecia perspektywa odsłania różnice w sposobach wykorzystania wartości w rozmaitych schematach argumentacyjnych stosowanych w sporach na temat szczepień.
An interdisciplinary approach involving linguistics, rhetoric, and argumentation theory helps reveal how people argue their opinions and decisions. Although the pandemic is a common experience, its risks are perceived in different ways. For some, the real threat is Covid-19 and the remedy is vaccination. For others, however, the real risk is the vaccine and the “remedy” is refusal to get vaccinated. Justifying their opinions on the subject, Italian Internet users refer to common values (such as life, health, responsibility, etc.). However, since Internet users diagnose risks in different ways, they make use of shared values in differing ways. In this paper, the views of those for and against vaccination are analyzed from three complementary perspectives. The first one concerns the differences in which people conceive of various values. The second one shows how, using the same topoi, pro- and anti-vaccine advocates create different hierarchies of values that are fundamental to their respective decisions. Finally, the third one explores differences in the ways values are used in various argumentation schemes used in disputes on vaccination.

Amongst the possible linguistic-stylistic polarities for Italian narrators (monolinguism/ standardised language and multilingualism/regionalised Italian), which are clearly outlined by De Roberto in his well-known Preface to Documenti umani, Santo Piazzese and Domenico Seminerio move with care and remarkable metalinguistic consciousness, drawing on Sciascia in different ways. Their different writing practices, far removed from Camilleri’s linguisticstylistic choices, seem oriented towards what Testa (1997) called a “simple style” with a focus on “local colour” that is part of Piazzese’s refined rhetorical and investigative play and, in the case of Seminerio, is functional to the expressive rendering of the interlacing of History, magic, and mystery. In both cases, it is thanks to this specific attention to linguistic facts that the defining principles of detective stories are renewed. The aim of this article is to systematically trace the two different ways of stylistically rendering the sociolinguistic reality narrated by Piazzese and Seminerio, with the first oriented towards the cautious mimesis of regional dialogue, the second, towards the diegetic pole of reproducing indirect and traditional narrative modes.
Fra le polarità linguistico-stilistiche possibili per i narratori italiani (monolinguismo/ lingua standardizzata e pluringuismo/italiano regionalizzato) - delineate con chiarezza già da De Roberto nella ben nota Prefazione a Documenti umani - i nostri due autori, Santo Piazzese e Domenico Seminerio, si muovono con cautela e notevole coscienza metalinguistica, facendo tesoro della lezione sciasciana con modalità diverse. Distanti dalle scelte linguistico-stilistiche di Camilleri, le loro differenti pratiche scrittorie sembrano orientate verso quello che Testa (1997) definiva “stile semplice” con un’attenzione al “colorito locale” che fa parte nel caso di Piazzese del raffinato gioco retorico e indagativo e nel caso di Seminerio è funzionale alla resa espressiva dell’intreccio tra, Storia, magia e mistero. In entrambi i casi è proprio grazie a un’attenzione specifica ai fatti linguistici che si rinnovano i moduli della narrativa poliziesca. Con forme mimetiche caute, utili a conferire colore locale oppure modi di pensare profondamente contrapposti, i gialli dei due autori offrono ai lettori la possibilità di riflettere sulle strutture sociali e i rapporti interpersonali proprio grazie a una resa equilibrata delle relazioni comunicative nel dialogato e nel narrato.

On a daily basis, Google’s algorithm plays a decisive role in determining the success or failure of web content. Authors must not only consider linguistic norms and conventions, which have been thoroughly explored in the literature on the subject, but also adhere to Google’s guidelines and the suggestions of SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) experts in order to optimise their content for a high position in the SERP (Search Engine Results Page). This process is highly complex, as it depends on the continuous updates of the search engine and requires consideration of all the services provided by Google—such as YouTube, Images, and Discover, among others—to meet the diverse needs of its users. Moreover, if necessary, the significant impact of social media, which is in some way connected with search engines, cannot be underestimated. It is evident that the search engine induces certain linguistic usages and trends, and its important role must be acknowledged in providing a clear and impartial view of such phenomena. In the context of web writing, the practice of “hyper-planning” is a fundamental aspect that is largely dependent on Google’s guidelines, as well as authors’ adherence to official guidelines, SEO manuals, and case studies. This approach embodies a markedly distinct attitude from the nonchalant approach often associated with web writing. This work is based on a corpus of 40 online guides and aims to illustrate the influence of the search engine on editorial choices concerning the lexicon (as part of “surface” planning), textuality, syntax, and content structure (as part of a more “deep” planning).
Con il proprio algoritmo Google decreta quotidianamente il successo o l’insuccesso dei contenuti pubblicati nel web. Gli autori devono tener conto tanto della norma linguistica e più in generale della forma, già attentamente studiate dalla letteratura scientifica sull’argomento, quanto delle linee guida di Google e dei suggerimenti degli esperti SEO (Search Engine Optimization) sull’ottimizzazione dei contenuti per il posizionamento vincente nella SERP. Si tratta di un’attività molto complessa che dipende anche dagli aggiornamenti continui del motore di ricerca e che non può escludere né i molti servizi messi a disposizione da Google per soddisfare i bisogni dell’utenza (YouTube, Immagini, Discover ecc.) né, là dove necessario, il peso dei social media. Alcuni usi e alcune tendenze sono quindi evidentemente indotti dal motore di ricerca, il cui il ruolo non può essere affatto sottovalutato per restituire una visione chiara e non parziale dei fenomeni linguistici. L’“iper-pianificazione” è senza dubbio uno degli aspetti fondamentali della scrittura in rete che dipendono in buona parte da Google e soprattutto dall’idea che l’autore ha maturato su questo tipo di scrittura seguendo le linee guida ufficiali, la manualistica SEO, i case study ecc. Essa è frutto di un atteggiamento quasi opposto alla disinvoltura in genere attribuita a tali scritture. Questo lavoro, basato su un corpus di quaranta guide online, mira a illustrare con gli esempi più rilevanti quanto il motore di ricerca abbia influenzato le scelte editoriali sul lessico, che rientrano in una pianificazione “di superficie”, e quelle sulla testualità, sulla sintassi e sulla presentazione dei contenuti, relative una pianificazione più “profonda”.

In contemporary Italian, just like in other languages, numerous English words are used. They are particularly frequent in the terminology of some branches of science, such as computer science, as well as in the language of young people. In this article, we discuss the issue of an appropriate policy to adopt towards these foreign lexical items. Different approaches to the problem are presented: the liberal approach, in which linguists should only describe linguistic realities rather than prescribe the “right” choices; the conscious approach, in which every speaker of Italian should reflect on his or her lexical choices; and the most radical approach, in which some official solutions are to be introduced. One of these solutions is the project of the Consiglio Superiore della Lingua Italiana, whose task would be to protect the Italian language against loanwords of English origin.
Nell’italiano contemporaneo, come in altre lingue, si usano numerosi anglicismi. Essi sono particolarmente frequenti nella terminologia di alcuni rami della scienza quali l’informatica, ma anche nel linguaggio giovanile. Nell’articolo viene discussa la questione della politica adeguata da adottare verso gli elementi lessicali stranieri. Si presentano diversi approcci al problema: l’approccio liberale in cui i linguisti si limitano a descrivere la realtà linguistica invece di prescrivere soluzioni corrette, l’approccio cosciente in cui ogni parlante d’italiano riflette sulle proprie scelte lessicali e l’approccio più radicale in cui si introducono alcune soluzioni ufficiali. Una di quelle soluzioni è il progetto della fondazione del Consiglio superiore della lingua italiana il cui compito sarebbe la protezione della lingua italiana dai forestierismi di origine inglese.

In the article entitled ‘The Taming of the Italian Vulgarism or Polish Translators Facing Censorship’ the authors reflect upon the translation of Italian vulgarisms contained in literary works into the Polish language. Two modern teen novels written by Federico Moccia were analyzed for this purpose, namely Tre metri sopra il cielo and its sequel Ho voglia di te. The former was translated into Polish by Krystyna and Eugeniusz Kabatc whereas the latter by Anna Niewęgłowska. The text analyses were performed with the use of TextSTAT. The authors analyze the translations of the expressions within the given contexts and attempt to tackle the questions concerning the translation techniques applied in the traduction of vulgarisms and cuss words as well as shed light on the differences in the translations of the two literary texts.
Dans le présent article, les auteurs réféchissent sur la traduction des vulgarismes italiens en polonais dans les deux romans contemporains pour les jeunes de Federico Moccia : Tre metri sopra il cielo et Ho voglia di te. La traduction du premier livre a été assurée par Krystyna et Eugeniusz Kabatc, tandis que le deuxième, qui constitue la suite des aventures des jeunes héros du premier texte, a été traduit par Anna Niewęgłowska. Après avoir fait une analyse statistique concernant le nombre de mots vulgaires dans les textes originaux et dans leurs traductions respectives, on a examiné les contextes d’apparition des gros mots, ce qui a permis de répertorier les solutions utilisées par les traducteurs de deux textes et les différentes techniques qu’ils ont adoptées dans la traduction des vulgarismes.

In this essay, we discuss the results of a questionnaire to observe the perception of the needs associated with the professional training of Italian as Second Language teachers. Previously, we investigated these necessities according to a scientific literature review. A questionnaire was administered to a sample of teachers in order to explore the professional needs and the critical aspects of Italian as Second Language Teaching. From data analysis two significant needs emerge. The first being the formal instruction of language training, and the second being to improve the communication between academic research and professional life.
In questo contributo sono discussi i risultati di un questionario relativo alle necessità formative del personale docente, che si occupa di insegnamento dell’italiano L2. A partire dalla valutazione della letteratura scientifica di riferimento, è stato strutturato un questionario per rilevare i bisogni formativi e gli aspetti critici in merito alla dimensione della didattica dell’italiano L2. Dall’analisi dei dati emerge con chiarezza il desiderio di formazione di carattere linguistico e la necessità di ulteriori raccordi fra mondo accademico e professionale.

The article discusses the motif of the object in the prose of the twentieth century Italian writer C.E. Gadda. Gadda’s attitude towards objects reflects his philosophy according to which the world of (physical and psychological) phenomena is a product of intersecting possibilities and creates a “convolution” of relations – impossible to describe in its entirety – that materializes as an object, event or person. Any understanding of the chaos of the world can only be merely partial and fragmentary. Objects and matter constitute a fundamental component of the narrative world presented by the writer. By using specific stylistic figures of speech (i.e. enumeration, list or catalogue) and distorting the standard language through neologisms, synonymy and calque, Gadda assigns the roles of full-fledged protagonists to the objects, being indispensable constituents of chaos. In itself, an attempt to describe chaos by applying such measures constitutes an attempt to find harmony and order.

In questo contributo viene introdotto il progetto Scrivere Come Risorsa Professionale nella Svizzera italiana (SCRiPSIt), promosso dal Dipartimento formazione e apprendimento (DFA) della Scuola Universitaria Professionale della Svizzera Italiana (SUPSI). Il progetto si propone di identificare le difficoltà e gli errori più ricorrenti nella scrittura delle tesi di laurea in lingua italiana degli studenti di tre dipartimenti della SUPSI (Dipartimento Formazione e Apprendimento, Dipartimento Tecnologie Innovative, Dipartimento Economia Aziendale, Sanità e Sociale) e di una scuola affiliata (Accademia Teatro Dimitri), con l’obiettivo di migliorarne la qualità linguistica e formale. Dopo una descrizione degli obiettivi e dello stato attuale di realizzazione del corpus, ci si sofferma sull’illustrazione dei software impiegati per l’analisi automatica, sui primi esiti dell’analisi relativa al lessico e sulle potenzialità dell’impiego della pipeline Tint. I risultati del progetto consentiranno di attivare corsi specifici dedicati alla scrittura delle tesi di laurea e più in generale alla scrittura di tipo funzionale e professionale, con applicazione potenzialmente estesa a tutti i dipartimenti della SUPSI e alle scuole affiliate.
This paper describes the highlights of Project SCRiPSIt (Writing as a Professional Resource in Southern Switzerland), led by the Department of Teaching and Learning of the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI). Located in the largest Italian-speaking population centre outside of Italy, SUPSI is a heterogeneous higher-learning institution with a strong emphasis on professional development. Project SCRiPSIt investigates a relatively large corpus of SUPSI bachelor’s theses by bringing together a heterogeneous research team featuring a combination of qualitative and quantitative research expertise in linguistics as well as in automated text processing. After a description of the key project objectives, we present an overview of the current state of the corpus and of the text-processing pipeline, along with some preliminary results.

The paper discusses some contact-related phenomena in the phonetics, morphology and syntax of the Slovene dialect that is spoken in the Natisone Valley in Italy, a dialect belonging to the Littoral dialect group. The purpose of the study is to establish the origin of these phenomena and clarify the features of their functioning and areal distribution. The data for the analysis (oral speech of informants) was collected during field research in this region. The following phenomena are revealed: voicing of the voiceless dental alveolar s before sonorants; borrowing of prepositions and conjunctions; postposition of adjectives in noun groups; doubling of pronouns and nouns; temporal constructions are used to express dates. It is revealed that the analyzed constructions and items have a high degree of variability: they function along with their Slovenian counterparts. In some cases, we are dealing with contaminated forms (contaminated prepositions, temporal construction for expressing dates). The doubling of pronouns and nouns forms a broken area, and a similar phenomenon is found in the languages of the Balkan Sprachbund.
W artykule omówiono niektóre zjawiska językowe jako rezultat kontaktów językowych z zakresu fonetyki, morfologii i składni, w słoweńskim dialekcie doliny Natisone we Włoszech, należącym do grupy dialektów przybrzeżnych. Celem artykułu jest ustalenie genezy tych zjawisk oraz opis sposobu funkcjonowania i obszarów występowania. Dane do analizy (wypowiedzi informatorów) zostały zebrane podczas badań terenowych w tym regionie. Ujawniają one następujące zjawiska: udźwięcznienie bezdźwięcznych spółgłosek zębowo-dziąsłowych przed sonornymi; zapożyczanie przyimków i spójników; postpozycja przymiotników w grupach rzeczownikowych; podwojenie zaimków i rzeczowników; wyrażanie dat przez określone konstrukcje czasowe. Okazuje się, że analizowane konstrukcje i formy charakteryzują się dużym stopniem zmienności, funkcjonują równolegle ze swoimi słoweńskimi odpowiednikami. W niektórych przypadkach mamy do czynienia z formami mieszanymi (mieszanymi konstrukcjami przyimkowymi, konstrukcjami czasowymi do wyrażania dat). Podwojenie zaimków i rzeczowników występuje na obszarze nierównomiernie, podobne zjawisko występuje w językach ligi bałkańskiej.

The article takes on the subject of linguistic picture of the world concerning the love and equivalent proverbs in Italian and Polish languages. The analysis of lexicographical materials demonstrates identical perception of this feeling, confluences within syntax of equivalents (despite the affiliation to different groups of languages) and, several times, common origin of proverbs in either language. This provenance oscillates around Latin. All of this tangential points undoubtedly are result of common, European cultural heritage.

According to the Italian legal system, Regions may intervene on social and administrative questions with their own laws. The aim of this paper is to analyse varieties of the same law in different Italian regions and cities. The quantitative and qualitative approach is aimed to show the efficiency of each text, taking into consideration linguistic factors and their use in legal writing, such as syntax and lexis as well as intertextuality and relations between hyper- and hypotext (European directives and national norms vs. local norms). The comparison between five similar texts on the same subject will show how the interpretation of a norm may deeply differ one from another and how the quality of a norm may negatively influence it’s comprehension.
Secondo l’ordinamento italiano le regioni possono intervenire sulle questioni sociali e amministrative approvando leggi locali. Nel presente articolo vogliamo analizzare varietà della stessa legge promulgata in diverse regioni e città italiane. L’approccio qualitativo e quantitativo dell’analisi è stato adottato per dimostrare l’efficacia del singolo testo, considerando inoltre fattori linguistici e le modalità della scrittura legale, tra cui la sintassi e il lessico adoperato, nonché l’intertestualità e le relazioni tra l’ipo- e l’ipertesto (si pensi alle direttive europee in materia, alla legge nazionale e alle norme locali). Il confronto tra cinque testi affini dedicati allo stesso argomento dimostrerà quanto sia differente l’interpretazione tra un testo e l’altro e quanto la qualità della norma scritta possa compromettere la sua comprensione.

The paper aims to analyse Jaroslav Rosendorfský’s bilingual Italian-Czech / Czech-Italian dictionary. After briefly presenting the Czech-Italian lexicographic contacts, we analyse the macroand microstructure of this lexicographic work, highlighting the characteristics that, as of the 60 years leading to the beginning of the 21st century, made it the most popular bilingual Italian-Czech and Czech-Italian dictionary.
L’articolo ha come scopo l’analisi del dizionario bilingue italiano-ceco/ceco-italiano realizzato da Jaroslav Rosendorfský. Dopo aver presentato brevemente i contatti lessicografici cecoitaliani fino al momento dell’uscita del summenzionato dizionario, si passa all’analisi della macroe microstruttura di quest’opera lessicografica, delle sue finalità, mettendo in evidenza le caratteristiche che dagli anni Sessanta del XX secolo fino agli inizi del terzo Millennio ne hanno fatto il più popolare dizionario bilingue italiano-ceco e ceco-italiano.

W ramach Tygodnia z Kulturą Włoską organizowanego na Uniwersytecie Pedagogicznym w Krakowie odbyły się warsztaty biblioteczne nauki języka włoskiego dla dzieci w wieku przedszkolnym. Program zajęć przewidywał zabawę na Boblesach, uaktywniających pamięć językową poprzez aktywizację fizyczną, i obejmował trzy zabawy, które miały na celu w sposób przystępny pomóc dzieciom przyswoić nazwy kolorów, zwierząt oraz podstawowych zwrotów w języku włoskim. W programie uwzględniona została także część plastyczna oraz podsumowanie, podczas którego powtórzono z dziećmi nowopoznane włoskie słownictwo. Wydarzenia takie jak te są nie tylko niekonwencjonalną próbą uczenia dzieci języka, ale także dowodem na aktywny udział bibliotek w procesie kształcenia jej najmłodszych użytkowników.
During the Week of Italian Culture organised by the Pedagogical University of Cracow a library workshop of teaching the Italian language to preschool children was arranged. The program was based on Bobles, activating the linguistic memory through physical activation, and included three games which were supposed to help the children to memorise, in an accessible way, the names of colours, animals, and some basic expressions in Italian. Moreover, the children also participated in the artistic part of the workshop and the revision part. Events like these are not only an unconventional attempt at teaching a foreign language to children, but also a great example of active participation of libraries in the process of education of the youngest user.

The paper first brings an overview of spoken interaction in FL and flipped learning principles. The present article is aimed at observing the usefulness of the traditional paper textbook for Italian language teaching in two educational contexts: in in-person and remote teaching. Its main research question concerns possible differences and similarities in the use of the textbook in the traditional and virtual classroom. The focus is also put on the specifics of the textbook application, such as the selection of content, types of texts, and activities preferred by teachers. In the first part of the article, the theoretical basis is illustrated and the definition of language textbooks and the specifics of remote teaching during and after the Covid-19 pandemic are highlighted. In the second, analytical part, the data from the survey on the usefulness of the traditional textbook in in-person and remote teaching have been presented. The relevant questionnaire was distributed from March to July 2022 via Google Forms among Italian language teachers working in different European countries, where Italian is taught as a foreign language, and Italy, where Italian is taught as a second language. The survey was aimed at capturing similarities and differences regarding the use of textbooks in these two teaching contexts. The results showed that the textbook still represents an important teaching tool both in person and via the Internet, mostly in the context of teaching Italian as a foreign language—outside the Italian-speaking area.
Il presente articolo si propone di osservare l’utilità del tradizionale libro di testo dedicato all’insegnamento della lingua italiana in due contesti educativi: nell’insegnamento in presenza e a distanza. La domanda di ricerca più importante riguarda possibili differenze e somiglianze nell’uso del libro di testo nella classe tradizionale e in quella virtuale. L’attenzione è volta anche al carattere dell’applicazione del libro di testo, come la selezione dei contenuti, i tipi di testi e le attività preferite da parte degli insegnanti. Nella prima parte dell’articolo sono state illustrate alcune basi teoriche, con un particolare riguardo alla definizione dello stesso libro di testo e alle specificità dell’insegnamento a distanza durante e dopo la pandemia Covid-19. Nella seconda parte, analitica, sono stati presentati i dati di un’indagine sull’utilità del libro di testo tradizionale nell’insegnamento frontale e a distanza. Il relativo questionario è stato distribuito nel periodo tra marzo e luglio 2022 tramite il modulo Google tra gli insegnanti di lingua italiana che lavorano sia in diversi paesi europei, insegnando l’italiano come lingua straniera, che in Italia, dove l’italiano è insegnato come seconda lingua. L’indagine mirava a cogliere le analogie e le differenze relative all’uso dei libri di testo in questi due contesti didattici. I risultati hanno mostrato che il libro di testo rappresenta ancora un importante strumento didattico sia in presenza che via internet, soprattutto nel contesto dell’insegnamento dell’italiano come lingua straniera, ossia al di fuori dell’area italofona.

In the Italian academic discourse research, Master’s degree theses used to be studied mainly from the perspective of linguistic competencies of their authors. However, strictly linguistic skills are not the only challenge for undergraduate, who must also convey intellectual content in appropriate discursive and rhetorical forms. The paper explores the patterns of a peculiar form of “collaborative writing”, i.e. the cooperation between the thesis supervisor and the student. Using the example of Master’s theses in lin- guistics, written in Italian as a foreign language, three basic didactic approaches are discussed in the paper. In the didactics of content the supervisors emphasize knowledge, i.e. linguistic concepts expected to be applied in a Master’s thesis. In the didactics of forms, the supervisors focus on the linguistic code, that  is, on grammatical and lexical correctness of the Master’s thesis. In the didactics of forms of content the supervisors use regularities observed in academic discourse, such as genre and rhetorical structures, as valuable teaching resources likely to help students develop metacommunicative awareness.

Literature may stand in opposition to any theory, and so, even those theories which are marked by conspicuous theses, hardly provide readers with sufficient, compelling interpretations. Gustaw Herling-Grudziński in his Diary Written at Night assumes the reader’s vantage point. He writes of what he sees, reads, and what he can remember, but also of what is really important. In the Diary we may witness a Pole who, despite being an outstanding intermediary, does not take liberty to explain in order to elucidate new things, but merely reads and comprehends the world, approaching reality also by means of languages and cultures through which Goodness is expressed.
Literatura może pozostawać w opozycji do każdej teorii, tak że nawet te teorie, które odznaczają się wyraźnymi tezami, nie dostarczają często wystarczających interpretacji i nie są w stanie przyciągnąć czytelnika. gustaw Herling-Grudziński Dziennik pisany nocą pisze z pozycji czytelnika. Pisze o tym, co widzi i czyta, o tym, co sobie przypomina, a także o tym, co jest naprawdę ważne. W Dzienniku widać Polaka, który będąc wybitnym pośrednikiem, nie tłumaczy, aby przybliżyć innym coś nowego, lecz czyta i pojmuje świat, zbliżając się do rzeczywistości także przy pomocy języków i kultur, poprzez które wyraża się dobro.

Im Tagebuch kann man einen Polen sehen, der als hervorragender Mittler nicht erklärt, um anderen etwas neues näher zu bringen, sondern er liest und begreift die Welt, indem er sich der Realität auch mit Hilfe von Sprachen und Kulturen nähert, durch die das Gute zum Ausdruck kommt.

Word-formation and compounding in Italian present many interesting challenges (classification of compounds, its interpretation and types of semantic relationship that may hold between the compound’s elements). This article attempts to examine a different one — the orthography of one productive compounding pattern in present-day Italian, that is Verb + Noun compounds. Various accounts of Verb + Noun ortography are reviewed, with special focus on the status of hyphenated words. In light of this data, the author focuces also on the problem of inclusion of compounds as multi-word units by dictionaries. The aim of this research is to contrast theoretical prescriptions with some data samples of Italian (Noun) Verb + Noun compounds drawn from La Gazzetta dello Sport (2016—2020). With this analysis the author wants to examine more in detail whether the use reflects what Italian grammarians claim about the Verb + Noun compounds ortography rules, because in various researches conducted in this field that aspect has often been neglected.

The paper aims to present contrastive Italian-Macedonian studies, giving a general overview of the development of these studies, with particular attention to the context in which the first studies between these two languages appeared. A corpus of 60 studies published in the last two decades is analysed in the second part of the paper. The classification of the studies based on the topics covered reveals a prevalence of morphosyntactic, semantic, and translation studies. Contrastive studies related to teaching Italian as a foreign language and studies that introduce other topics are also present in the corpus. The final part of the paper reflects upon the future of this type of contrastive study, especially in light of the recent changes related to the interest in studying Italian in Macedonia.
Lo studio mira a presentare il quadro delle ricerche contrastive italiano-macedone. Si presenta una breve panoramica della storia dell’italianistica macedone, con attenzione particolare al contesto in cui nascono i primi studi di ordine contrastivo tra l’italiano e il macedone. Nella parte centrale del contributo viene analizzato il corpus composto da circa sessanta studi pubblicati negli ultimi due decenni. La classificazione degli studi esaminati in base all’argomento trattato rivela la prevalenza di studi che vertono su argomenti morfosintattici, semantici e traduttologici. Negli ultimi anni si attesta inoltre una notevole crescita degli studi didatticamente motivati e ricerche che aprono argomenti nuovi. Nella parte finale dello studio si riflette sulle possibili direzioni future degli studi contrastivi tra queste due lingue tenendo in conto anche i cambiamenti recenti che riguardano l’interesse per l’italiano in Macedonia.

The purpose of the article is to examine the relationship between television language and spoken Italian, applying the problem of the subjunctive as a reference point, frequently replaced by the indicative in colloquial contexts. Despite the fact that television language is now considered a reflection of Italian varieties and spoken-spoken language, there is still a heterogeneous language of the type transmitted. As such, it constitutes a set of various styles and registers, characterized by different linguistic phenomena from those of unattended speech. The effect of the study is to show that although in the field of Italian diametric varieties television language has more in common with spoken than written Italian, the dynamics of the processes that take place in both are still not the same.

Dal punto di vista cognitivo insegnare a comprendere significa insegnare ad attivare nella maniera più efficace la expectancy grammar, per giungere alla capacità di cogliere e collegare il filo logico che lega il discorso. La ricerca valuta il livello A1 (QCE) delle abilità ricettive in tre tappe di studio dell’italiano come materia opzionale, e precisamente in quinta elementare, terza media inferiore (che nel sistema scolastico croato corrisponde all’ottava elementare) e terza media superiore. La scelta di analizzare lo stesso livello di competenza linguistica è stata dettata dall’ipotesi che la lingua italiana nella verticale scolastica della scuola croata tende ad arginarsi alle competenze di base. Il fatto potrebbe rispecchiare i cambiamenti nella struttura demografica della popolazione istroquarnerina, interessata da una fluttuazione costante in controtendenza rispetto alla tradizione italofona. Si prenderanno in esame i dati comparati di un corpus complessivo di 1051 soggetti, scaturiti dall’analisi della lettura e dell’ascolto in base al grado di studio e al sesso.
From a cognitive point of view, teaching to understand means teaching to activate in the most efficient way the “expectancy grammar” in order to achieve the capacity to grasp and link the logical thread that links up speech. This article evaluates level A1 of the receptive abilities in three stages of learning Italian as an optional language. The choice to analyse the same level of linguistic competence was dictated by the hypothesis that the Italian language teaching in Croatian educational tends to contain only the basic competencies. This fact could be influenced by the changes in the demographic structure of the population in the area of Istria and Kvarner, which, due to the constant flux of the population, have a negative impact on the indigenous Italian population. In the article, we will analyse a complex corpus of the comparative data (that includes 1 051 participants) which resulted from the analysis of reading and listening and is based on the level of study and the sex of the interviewees.

Ninejsze studium przedstawia socjo-kulturowe praktyki zastosowania języka angielskiego jako jezyka kontaktowego na przykładzie specyficznej grupy kontaktowej: migrantów, którzy przepłynęłi Morze Sródziemne i zarejestrowani zostali w programie SPRAR (Sistema di Protezione per Richiedenti Asilo e Rifugiati), w ramach którego pobierają naukę języka włoskiego. W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań (obserwacji zajęć i wywiadów z nauczycielami) na temat przenikania się języków: włoskiego, angielskiego i języków używanych przez uchodźców, z punktu widzenia kreatywności, elastyczności i przeskakiwania z kodu na kod w toku lekcji na początkowym etapie kursu językowego. Zaobserwowano formy językowe, które, choć błędne z punktu widzenia poprawności, stosowane są w konkretnych celach. Zilustrowano przykłady użycia hybryd języka angielskiego w sytuacji pedagogicznej, jako języka kontaktowego w trans-języcznej grupie, a także w narracjach osobistych, lub w odniesieniu do jego funkcji pragmatycznych: umacniania kontaktów i integracji grupy, okazywania zaufania, tolerancji i szacunku. Badanie przekracza granice dyscyplinarne, ponieważ integruje perspektywy spojrzenia lingwistycznego, antropologicznego, pedagogicznego i społecznego na zachowania językowe, aby dokładniej określić rolę i funkcję języka angielskiego w nowej sytuacji komunikacyjnej.
Descriptive research on English as a Lingua Franca has been under way for more than a decade now, to the point where the acronym ELF refers not only to situations in which speakers of different first languages use English as their main communicative medium of choice, but also to a new research paradigm in various disciplines documenting a set of shared and stable features and processes. ELF is, in fact, essentially defined and characterised by its variability, flexibility, and linguistic creativity (Guido & Seidlhofer 2014; Seidlhofer 2011). In this paper, we approach the study of ELF as a socio-cultural, political and pragmatic phenomenon by looking at how it manifests itself linguistically in a specific group of speakers: migrant people who have recently crossed the Mediterranean and are enrolled in the national SPRAR project (Sistema di Protezione per Richiedenti Asilo e Rifugiati). The examples of language contacts between ELF and IFL (Italian as a Foreign Language) here discussed will illustrate how linguistic creativity manifests itself in ELF not only in the way “the virtual language of English” (Widdowson 1997: 138–140) is flexibly and creatively adapted and used, but also in the way in which non-English speech can be also integrated into ELF discourse. In the context of multicultural classrooms like those observed in this study, where such factors as integration, tolerance, respect and conflict are at issue every day, the use of ELF becomes more and more controversial. Indeed, it requires a multidisciplinary approach that considers the teaching/learning environment from a variety of perspectives, from the linguistic to the anthropological, from the pedagogical to the sociological ones.

The flow of migrants towards Italy in these past decades has raised the problem regarding the absorption and integration of newcomers in the new society and the labour market; this problem has become more severe in this last period. Learning the language and the foundations of the social and political structures of the receiving community is the best way to establish the necessary competence for integration. As the presence of foreigners in Italy stabilises, education has become more complex, as it must be oriented not only towards newcomer students, but also towards those who were born in Italy in foreign families who speak their own mother tongue at home but are also highly competent in Italian. This situation gives rise to diverse individual profiles according to the different balance of the linguistic varieties in these students’ inventory. This article aims to show that an inspection carried according to the sociolinguistic methodology can bring forth valuable data for educational as well as territorial planning and for the definition of policies for integration. The article will present general data on the Italian situation compared to the European one in general in order to define the phenomenon. Then a specific study will be presented based on research conducted in the Scuola Cavour in Alessandria (PISU project – POR FESR 2014/2010), where there are classes in which foreigners and second-generation Italians (G2s) are numerous. A sociolinguistic questionnaire has been collected from students between the ages of 11 and 13 years old; the aim is to assess not only the students’ competences tout court, but also the social spaces where their different languages are used, their main difficulties, and their ambitions. The statistical data are presented and discussed in order to point out the different profiles; they reveal how complex it is to create a linguistic education that moves towards aware citizenship. Practically, the data also provide an important indication on the composition of the classroom and on the educational practices to adopt.
Il flusso di migranti verso l’Italia di questi ultimi decenni ha sollevato il problema dell’assorbimento e dell’integrazione dei nuovi arrivati nella società e nel mercato del lavoro; questo problema è divenuto più acuto in questi ultimi anni. Imparare la lingua e i fondamenti delle strutture sociali e politiche della comunità ospitante è il modo migliore per creare le competenze necessarie all’integrazione. Con lo stabilizzarsi della presenza di stranieri in Italia l’educazione è divenuta sempre più complessa perché deve orientarsi non solo agli studenti appena arrivati, ma anche a quelli che sono nati in Italia da famiglie straniere ed usano la loro lingua madre a casa, ma sono anche molto competenti in italiano. Si sono formati così svariati profili individuali, a seconda del diverso equilibrio delle varietà che compongono il loro repertorio linguistico. Questo articolo intende mostrare che l’indagine condotta con la metodologia della sociolinguistica può produrre dei dati preziosi per la pianificazione di interventi sia didattici sia territoriali volti anche alla definizione di politiche d’integrazione locale. L’articolo presenterà alcuni dati generali sulla situazione italiana confrontata con quella europea per definire il fenomeno, per poi presentare i risultati di una ricerca condotta nella Scuola media “Cavour” di Alessandria nell’ambito del progetto PISU (POR FESR 2014/2010) dove la presenza di alunni stranieri e di seconda generazione (G2) è molto numerosa. È stato somministrato un questionario sociolinguistico a studenti tra gli 11 e i 13 anni; l’obiettivo non era soltanto la valutazione delle competenze tout court, ma anche la classificazione dei contesti in cui le diverse varietà vengono usate, l’identificazione delle principali difficoltà rispetto alla istituzione scolastica e delle ambizioni. Si presenteranno e si discuteranno i dati statistici che evidenziano i diversi profili e mostrano quanto complessa sia la formazione linguistica finalizzata alla cittadinanza consapevole. Sul piano pratico, i dati danno anche una preziosa indicazione sulla composizione delle classi e sulle pratiche da adottare.

Our research intends to find selection parameters for children’s literature to be used as a fundamental part of a foreign-language curriculum. We achieve this through an analysis of the educational and cultural-linguistic advantages of this literature. Our project’s goal is to expose our students to Italian literature using their second language, rather than their first one, as a way to convey cultural meaning. This educational project was conducted in 2015, in a school in Chicago that offers classes of Italian Language and Culture to children at various linguistic levels, including the English-Italian bilingual one. Our research paper is divided into three parts. The first part introduces a theoretical excursus on the meaning of children’s literature and on the fable’s structure as a literary genre. The second part presents examples of how a specific text (L’albero delle fiabe by Roberto Piumini) was selected and used during the project; this part also includes our comments based on the observations of the child participants. Finally, the analysis stage describes the generalisation of our data within a framework indicating how to select a literary text, which may be useful for other teachers when deciding which children’s books to use and how to apply them to educational curricula.
Il nostro studio si propone di individuare criteri di selezione del testo letterario per l’infanzia, da usare come parte integrante di un curriculum di lingua straniera, analizzandone i vantaggi educativi e linguistico-culturali. Lo scopo del progetto è stato esporre i bambini alla letteratura italiana, usando la lingua seconda come strumento veicolare, non il contrario. Il progetto didattico è stato svolto presso una scuola di Chicago che offre corsi di lingua e cultura italiana a bambini di vario livello linguistico, compreso i bilingui in inglese e italiano. Lo studio è diviso in tre parti. La prima parte presenta un excursus teorico sul significato della letteratura d’infanzia e sulla struttura della fiaba come genere letterario. La seconda parte presenta esempi di selezione del testo usato durante il progetto (L’albero delle fiabe di R. Piumini) e i commenti derivati dalle nostre osservazioni. La fase di analisi riporta la generalizzazione dei nostri dati in uno schema di lavoro per la selezione del testo letterario, utile ad altri insegnanti nella scelta e didattizzazione di libri per l’infanzia.

The article presents the benefits of virtual exchanges/telecollaboration in higher education. Telecollaboration is a form of virtual mobility which can complement or substitute physical mobility. Taking part in virtual exchanges brings benefits which are in line with the recent European recommendations on education. Importantly, telecollaboration requires lower financial outlays and less time comparing to participation in physical exchanges. Thus, its implementation allows the development of various competences (linguistic, digital, intercultural, etc.) despite students’ economic and personal situation. The second part of the study presents a Polish-Italian virtual exchange conducted in the 2018/2019 academic year between the Marie Curie-Skłodowska University and the University of Turin. During the exchange learners of Polish and learners of Italian played the role of their mother tongue teachers. The research aimed to determine whether such a structure of virtual exchange is possible to be successfully implemented among students at the bachelor level. Three factors were analysed during the project: the students’ choice of online tools, forms of presenting language content to partners, and acts of code switching. The data were collected from the students’ production in telecollaborative tasks. It was found that giving students the possibility to choose the language code autonomously did not affect the exchange negatively. However, the students were not sufficiently prepared to act as teachers. Despite being familiar with various online tools, they chose those not adapted to the digital environment, and they found the language issues too complex to be successfully explained to their exchange partners.

Over the last years, thousands of asylum seekers and refugees have arrived in Italy, including a large number of teenagers without any adult caregivers and women. A significant partof them is placed in the Italian language courses for foreigners organised by the Provincial Centre for Adult Education, commonly called CPIA (Centro Provinciale per l’Istruzione degli Adulti). Thispaper addresses the exploration of the language testing and assessment of the courses organized by this institution. With the aim of evaluating these aspects, the paper concentrates on the CPIA,its teachers, and its students. Focusing on CPIA’s language courses, we investigate the language testing and assessment carried out at the beginning and at the end of the language courses. Thanks to these observations, the paper tries to identify some critical aspects and to understand their causes.

The paper discusses the attitude of the Fascist regime in Italy towards the dialects, which in that period were still used in everyday communication by most Italians. It analyses the language politics in the field of education and mass media. A lot of attention has been paid to the teaching program “from dialect to language”, which was experimented with at schools in the twenties and subsequently abandoned as a result of a growing anti-dialect campaign. It also discusses the restrictions in the use of dialects in the press, radio and cinema. The emerging picture of the language policy of that period shows a transition from relative tolerance towards the use of dialects in public area in the twenties to a rising hostility and the fight against them conducted for the sake of ideological and political unification of Italy.

The aim of the article is to show the possibility of using the idea of autobiographical narrative in the process of learning a foreign language. The article is composed of two parts, the former presenting the theoretical background of autobiographical narratives in the light of latest glottodidactic literature, the latter presenting the results of the author’s autobiographical narrative research conducted in the year 2012 amongst the students of Classical and Mediterranean Philologies of Wroclaw University (Institute of Classical Studies). The writing of this article was inspired by the published work of Dorota Werbinska22 and her study conducted amongst the students of English Philology as well as the students of non-philological fields of study like managerial studies and elementary education with English. The main objective of the article is to show the possibility of using the autobiographical study in the more effective process of teaching foreign languages.

This paper presents some results of a comparison of a sample of Italian texts produced by native speakers of Italian with the following: 1) a parallel sample of written productions of native speakers of Polish; 2) a sample of parallel texts produced in Italian by a group of Polish learners of Italian as a foreign language. The way of textualizing the narrative macro-act elicited with a short comic movie of Mr. Bean that was proposed to the informants in the course of an experiment is investigated. The proposed analyses show that texts produced by Italians have textuality definable in terms of nominal style, while Polish texts and Italian texts produced by Polish informants tend toward verbal style. The results obtained are commented in the light of contrastive-typological considerations aimed to place Italian and Polish within the distinction between endo- and exocentric languages.
Il presente contributo presenta alcuni risultati di una comparazione di un campione di testi italiani, ovvero prodotti da informatori di madrelingua italiana con: 1) da un lato un campione parallelo di produzioni scritte di parlanti nativi del polacco; 2) dall’altro lato un campione di testi paralleli prodotti in italiano da un gruppo di apprendenti di italiano come LS madrelingua polacchi. Viene indagato il modo di testualizzare il macroatto narrativo a partire da un input extralinguistico (breve filmato comico di Mr. Bean) proposto agli informatori nel corso di un esperimento. Dalle analisi proposte emerge che i testi italiani hanno una testualità definibile in termini di stile nominale, mentre i testi polacchi e i testi italiani prodotti dagli informatori polacchi tendono verso lo stile verbale. I risultati ottenuti vengono commentati a partire da una cornice interpretativa costruita attorno alle considerazioni tipologico-contrastive volte a collocare l’italiano e il polacco rispetto alla distinzione tra le lingue endo- ed esocentriche.

This paper presents findings from the planning and testing of a didactic unit for students of Italian as a second language, a unit that focuses on how to use the multipurpose word che (che polivalente). The materials used in this unit are Italian songs. The aim of this testing is to support the training of future language mediators, interpreters, and translators at the Department of Interpreting and Translation of the University of Bologna by raising awareness about a linguistic trait of the neo-standard, i.e., the new standard variety of Italian language. This paper examines the didactic context of testing, how it was carried out, and the phenomenon of the multipurpose che; it also attempts to classify the various cases of the che polivalente in two macro-areas. The outcomes of a quantitative analysis of the data gathered through monitoring are thought to provide evidence for how this practice of using songs may prove useful both in creating a positive atmosphere that fosters language acquisition, as well as in enhancing motivation based on the concept of pleasure. This may facilitate the processing of an otherwise incomprehensible linguistic input and lay the groundwork for further research on the subject, which may also allow for a broader study.
Questo articolo illustra la progettazione e sperimentazione di un’unità didattica basata su testi di canzoni italiane e finalizzata a facilitare l’approccio con il fenomeno del che polivalente da parte di discenti di lingua italiana L2. Lo scopo di tale sperimentazione è di supportare la formazione di futuri mediatori, interpreti e traduttori presso il Dipartimento di Interpretazione e Traduzione dell’Università di Bologna, favorendo la consapevolezza circa un tratto linguistico dell’italiano neostandard. Verranno presentati il contesto didattico di sperimentazione, il tema del che polivalente, con un tentativo di classificazione delle sue diverse realizzazioni in due macroaree, e l’unità didattica realizzata. Infine, dall’analisi quantitativa degli esiti di un monitoraggio svolto sul gruppo-classe oggetto di studio, si mostrerà come tale pratica si sia rivelata utile a creare un’atmosfera positiva favorevole all’acquisizione e a potenziare la motivazione legata al piacere, facilitando la processabilità di un input linguistico altrimenti incomprensibile e gettando le basi per ulteriori indagini sul tema che consentano di dare vita ad uno studio più ampio.

In this article, we attempt to examine how the issue of double‑auxiliary verbs, that is, verbs that can be conjugated – in compound tenses – with both avere and essere as auxiliaries, are presented in Italian grammar books for foreign language learners. We will focus in particular on 1) verbs that can be both transitive and intransitive (e.g., ho cominciato un nuovo lavoro vs le vacanze sono cominciate); 2) verbs expressing atmospheric phenomenon (ha/è nevicato); 3) verbs of movement (e.g., sono volato a Roma vs ho volato diverse volte); 4) verbs that use two auxiliaries indifferently (e.g., ha/è assomigliato); and 5) verbs that change meaning depending on the auxiliary verb used in the compound tense (e.g., ho calzato gli sci vs è calzato a pennello). Our analysis is carried out on 19 grammar textbooks for Italian language referring to the CEFR, highlighting some weaknesses regarding the presentation of the rules for double‑auxiliary verbs, such as the total omission of this issue, a certain selectivity and/or disorder, as well as terminological inconsistencies. In our conclusions, we propose some solutions that may help to systematize the rules regarding double‑auxiliary verbs in Italian.
Celem artykułu jest analiza gramatyk języka włoskiego dla obcokrajowców pod względem reguł, jakie formułują w kwestii podwójnego czasownika posiłkowego (czasowników, które w czasach złożonych występują z oboma czasownikami posiłkowymi, avere i essere). Omówione zostaną przede wszystkim: 1) czasowniki, które mogą być użyte jako przechodnie i nieprzechodnie (np. ho cominciato un nuovo lavoro vs le vacanze sono cominciate); 2) czasowniki określające zjawiska atmosferyczne (np. ha/è nevicato); 3) czasowniki wyrażające ruch (np. sono volato a Roma vs ho volato diverse volte); 4) czasowniki, dla których wybór czasownika posiłkowego jest dowolny (np. ha/è assomigliato) lub 5) czasowniki, które zmieniają znaczenie w zależności od czasownika posiłkowego użytego w czasie złożonym (np. ho calzato gli sci vs è calzato a pennello). Analizie poddano 19 gramatyk języka włoskiego nawiązujących do ESOKJ, ukazując pewne ich mankamenty, np. brak reguł dotyczących danego zjawiska, wybiórcze i niesystematyczne omówienie problemu, brak precyzji terminologicznej. W konkluzjach zaproponowano kilka rozwiązań, które pomogą usystematyzować reguły dotyczące podwójnego czasownika posiłkowego w języku włoskim.

This paper sustains that rhetoric can be a fruitful way of practicing philosophy of language. The starting point is a suggestion drawn from the work of the Italian philosopher Roberto Esposito. According to Esposito, one of the main characteristics of the Italian thought is the focus on the necessary connection between language and extra-linguistic world. I argue that rhetoric (intended in an Aristotelian sense), thanks to its extra-linguistic aim (persuasion), pays particular attention to this connection. This has important consequences: 1. considering speakers and listeners as essential components of speech and assigning a key position to the listener; 2. including the sphere of emotion in the fi eld of refl ection on language; 3. considering truth as a social practice; 4. considering the agonistic dimension as a constitutive element of the speech.

L’obiettivo del presente contributo è esaminare la possibilità di utilizzare i corpora nell’insegnamento di argomenti di ordine grammaticale ad apprendenti di italiano LS. Il contributo presenta una proposta didattica basata su corpora e sperimentata con studenti di italiano dell’Università “Ss. Cirillo e Metodio” di Skopje nell’anno accademico 2016/2017. L’ipotesi alla base della proposta didattica è che l’uso diretto e guidato di corpora possa sensibilizzare gli studenti alla problematicità dell’argomento grammaticale trattato, ma anche fornire loro degli strumenti e percorsi per esplorare la lingua in modo autonomo. La prima parte del contributo esamina l’uso dei corpora nell’insegnamento delle lingue straniere con riferimento particolare all’uso dei corpora nell’contesto dell’italiano LS. La parte centrale presenta le attività didattiche proposte sulle frasi concessive e il contesto in cui sono state sperimentate. L’ultima parte verte sulle considerazioni degli studenti riportate in un questionario da una parte e sulle potenzialità e i limiti di questo approccio didattico dall’altra.
The aim of the paper is to explore the possibility of using corpora in teaching grammar to learners of Italian as a foreign language. The paper presents corpus-based activities used with students of Italian at the Saints Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje in 2016/2017. The hypothesis underlying this teaching approach is that direct and guided use of corpora can raise students’ awareness of the complexity of the phenomena observed as well as present them with resources and methods to explore the language more autonomously. The first part of the paper investigates the use of corpora in language teaching, with particular attention to the use of these resources in teaching Italian as a foreign language. The main section describes the activities on concessives and the context in which they have been used. The final part reports on the observations of the students and addresses the advantages and disadvantages of this teaching approach.

Artykuł poświęcony jest rozważaniom na temat miejsca i roli dialektów lokalnych w repertuarze językowym młodego pokolenia Włochów (umowna kategoria wiekowa: 18–24 lata). Zachowania językowe tej grupy naznaczą w znacznej mierze panoramę socjolingwistyczną Italii w XXI wieku. W pracy omówiono dane statystyczne (ISTAT) dotyczące rozpowszechnienia znajomości dialektu w wybranej grupie wiekowej oraz scharakteryzowano, na podstawie zebranego materiału empirycznego, w jaki sposób przebiega komunikacja młodych Włochów w gronie rodzinnym oraz w życiu społecznym. Przedstawiono także opinie respondentów na temat przyszłości dialektów lokalnych (uwzględniając rolę wychowania, szkoły oraz mediów, a także przydatność dialektów w kontekście rynku pracy) oraz opisano wartość emocjonalną i funkcję ekspresywną dialektów.
The present paper is dedicated to the reflection on the place and role of local dialect in the linguistic repertoire of the young generation of Italians (the conventional age category: 18–24 years). The language behaviors of this age group will be largely indicative of the sociolinguistic panorama of Italy in the XXI century. The article contains a secondary analysis of statistical data regarding the diffusion of dialect among the selected age group and the characteristics of language communication with the family members and in the daily social conversations. Moreover, the respondents’ opinions on the future of the local dialects were presented (including the discussion on the role of family education, school and media, and the usefulness of dialects in the context of the labor market). Finally, the emotional value and expressive function of dialects were described.

The subject of this paper is the cultural identity of bilingual Polish immigrants who moved to Italy between 1956 and 1999. The bilingualism and the cultural identity of the subjects investigated have been presented as individualized phenomena and as an ongoing lifetime process. Applying the affective criterion, the author has distinguished six types of identity attitudes, the most important of which is the “over‑particularist cultural and national identity”, an attitude not oriented around a specific language or culture, but related to an emotional state or a psychological need predominant in the respondent’s life.

From multi-dialogue to monologue in spoken Italian: the pragmatic/prosodic basis of multi-dialogue and its transformation in narrative and descriptive monologues – The paper summarizes the Language into Act Theory (L-AcT), according to which spoken texts are analysed and aligned per utterance to the acoustic source. Three stretches of spoken Italian taken from the LABLITA Corpus (multi-dialogue, dialogue, monologue) are described according to L-AcT as regards turn-taking, information structure, and illocution. The above texts are then compared to a short literary excerpt showing the different syntactic architecture of the two language varieties.

In this article, we consider a reading test developed by the CILS Certification Centre of the Università per Stranieri di Siena, designed for students of Italian as a Foreign Language. The so-called “information detection test” is a variant of a true/false test. We have studied the design of the test (level B1, summer 2009), examined its goals, collected data based on samples tested on foreigners and natives. Numerous critical issues are identified making the tests poorly suited to the certifying body’s purposes, as we demonstrated in a previous research (Torresan 2014).

Postępująca globalizacja i coraz powszechniejszy dostęp do internetu sprawia, że interakcje między uczącymi się języków obcych zachodzą już nie tylko w formie bezpośredniej, ale także online. Taka forma komunikacji charakteryzuje się specyficznymi właściwościami i wymaga odmiennych od tradycyjnych form nauczania. W niniejszym artykule ukazano, jak nowoczesna forma uczenia się, jaką jest udział w wymianach wirtualnych, pozwala na wykorzystywanie umiejętności charakterystycznych dla interakcji online określonych w dokumencie CEFR Companion Volume. Zaprezentowane badanie oparte jest na danych zebranych podczas polsko-włoskiej wymiany wirtualnej przeprowadzonej między Uniwersytetem w Turynie a Uniwersytetem Marii Curie-Skłodowskiej w Lublinie. Analiza ilościowo-jakościowa wypowiedzi studentów uczących się języka włoskiego na poziomie A1, zgromadzonych podczas projektu, pozwoliła na stwierdzenie, że udział w wymianie wirtualnej był dla studentów okazją do wykorzystania różnorodnych umiejętności związanych z rozmową i dyskusją online, zdefiniowanych w dokumencie CERF Companion Volume. Wyniki badania wskazują ponadto, że ilość wypowiedzi uczestników projektu przewyższała minimum konieczne do zrealizowania wyznaczonych zadań oraz, że wykazali się oni wieloma kompetencjami w zakresie interakcji online przyporządkowanymi poziomowi A2, a więc przewyższającymi ich poziom biegłości językowej w zakresie języka włoskiego. Na tej podstawie można stwierdzić, że wymiany wirtualne są dla studentów angażującą formą nauki nawet na najniższym poziomie językowym, która pozwala realizować ich potencjał komunikowania się w języku docelowym, z wykorzystaniem umiejętności interakcji online.
In today's world interactions between language learners take place not only in a direct form but also online. Online communication requires adequate forms of teaching, one of which can be learning through virtual exchanges. This article shows how this form of learning allows the use of skills characteristic of online interactions defined in the CEFR Companion Volume. The research herein presented is based on data collected during a Polish-Italian virtual exchange. The quantitative and qualitative analysis of A1 level Italian students' statements gathered during the project showed that participation in the virtual exchange was an opportunity for learners to use various skills related to online conversation and discussion defined in the CERF Companion Volume. The results also show that the number of statements created by the learners was significantly higher than the minimum necessary to complete the assigned tasks. Furthermore, the students demonstrated many online interaction skills assigned to the A2 level, thus exceeding the level of their Italian language proficiency. On this basis, it can be concluded that virtual exchanges are an engaging form of learning for students, even at the beginner level, which allows them to realize their potential for communicating in the target language with the use of online interaction skills.

Objet : l'usage que les italophones font de la dérivation modificative italienne afin de comprendre les besoins de formation en L2. Protocole: Un dessin affiche des oppositions dimensionnelles (petit homme vs. homme grand) et qualitatives (chien gentil vs. chien méchant) parmi les référents, ce qui devrait motiver l’usage des suffixes modificatifs. Quelques résultats : – utilisation fréquente des suffixes diminutifs -ino/-etto/-ello et de l’augmentatif -one ; – priorité donnée aux formes modificatives nominales, au signifié dimensionnel et aux modificatifs lexicalisés. Conclusion : en L2 il faudrait donner la priorité à l’apprentissage des constructions les plus simples, productives et fréquentes.
Subject. The student’s needs in Italian as a Foreign Language on the basis of how the native Italian speakers use the modifying morphology. Protocol. An image displays some dimensional oppositions (small man / big man) and qualitative oppositions (friendly dog / naughty dog) among the referents, which could be translated using the modifying suffixes. Some results. – The most common modifying morphemes used are the diminutive suffixes -ino/-etto/-ello, the augmentative -one. – The nouns are the most frequently modifying words. The dimensional sense and the lexicalized modifying forms are privileged. Conclusion. The most simple, productives and frequent modifying constructions should be favored in Foreign Language learning.

A oltre 30 anni dalla pubblicazione dei 35 tratti dell’italiano dell’uso medio (IUM), pur in presenza di successive osservazioni e puntualizzazioni, si può dire che questa etichetta linguistica sia ormai condivisa da tutti gli studiosi. Tuttavia la scuola non sembra essere stata particolarmente ricettiva delle variazioni nella distanza tra la norma e l’uso e continua a imporre una varietà di italiano che ormai può essere considerata a sé stante. Purtroppo mancano studi che permettano di valutare la discrepanza tra norma interiorizzata e comportamento linguistico negli italofoni: poco sappiamo di quali tratti dell’IUM passano del tutto inosservati, quali sono rilevati ma ritenuti accettabili e quali ancora censurati. Questo contributo rende conto di alcuni sondaggi su parlanti italiani diversificati per provenienza geografica, età, sesso e livello di istruzione, chiamati a esprimere un giudizio su testi giornalistici in cui era presente o è stata inserita ad arte una selezione di tratti dell’IUM. I sondaggi non possono ovviamente dirsi esaustivi e rappresentano solo le prime fasi di uno studio più ampio. Ciononostante, oltre a testare le modalità di somministrazione dei questionari e di selezione degli informanti stessi, i risultati evidenziano la forte influenza della norma interiorizzata sui giudizi, influenza che non si limita ai tratti dell’IUM considerati ma che investe tutta una serie di altri fenomeni che rientrano nell’italiano scolastico e che contribuiscono a formare il modello di riferimento vigente presso la comunità italofona.
Over 30 years after the publication of the list of 35 traits characterising the “medium [i.e., between formal and informal] register of Italian”, this sociolinguistic label is commonly accepted, although many researchers have improved and modified its description. However, teachers in Italian schools have not proven to be particularly sensitive to the widening gap between norm and usage and still teach a variety of Italian that is not found anywhere else but in the classroom. Unfortunately, insufficient research has been conducted so far on the differences between the norms that Italian native speakers learn in their school years and their actual linguistic behaviour. Which traits of the IUM (italiano dell’uso medio) pass unnoticed, which are detected but considered acceptable, and which are classified as mistakes are still up for debate. This study illustrates a survey involving native speakers of Italian coming from different geographical areas and social backgrounds who were invited to comment on the language used in newspaper articles containing IUM traits. Of course, this survey is part of a larger research project and is not considered to be exhaustive; however, it proves useful in testing the most effective procedures to administer the questionnaires and select the informants. In addition, preliminary results show a strong influence of the linguistic norm taught at school on the assessment not only of IUM traits but also of a range of other traits contributing to the linguistic reference model used by Italian native speakers.

The article contributes to the discussion regarding the state certificate Since the new legislation in 2015 was introduced, the number of for-eign sessions of the state certificate examinations in Polish as a foreign language has significantly decreased. The article aims to show the impact of the amended legal provisions on the availability of the certificate examinations outside of Poland and, consequently on the level of knowledge about them among potential candidates in Italy. The article is based on the results of the survey conducted by the au-thors among the students of Polish studies in Italy.

The aim of this study is to present the oral production in Italian as foreign language (A2+) in the higher education level as a result of some repetition task activities with repetition questions and the autonomy study of the students for the oral preparation. For this research it has been analysed how students answer to the same question in 1:1 conversation after four weeks. The corpus comprises a total of 20 oral answers (10 in the first conversation and 10 in the second) and has been transcribed using the Jefferson method. Through the research it should be highlighted that comparing the total of the first answers with the second, the number of words used were major in the second answers as well as the length of the answer. Furthermore, in the second conversation, the level of autocorrection was higher. In addition, no remarkable differences were found by the use of micro and long pauses, interjectional, cut of words or phrases.
Celem niniejszego opracowania jest ukazanie tworzenia wypowiedzi ustnych w języku włoskim jako języku obcym (A2+) na poziomie szkolnictwa wyższego w świetle zastosowanych powtórzeń zadań oraz samodzielnej nauki studentów w ramach przygotowania ustnego. Na potrzeby badania przeanalizowano sposób, w jaki uczący się odpowiadają na to samo pytanie w rozmowie 1:1 po upływie czterech tygodni. Korpus obejmuje łącznie 20 odpowiedzi ustnych (10 w ramach pierwszej i 10 w ramach drugiej rozmowy) a transkrypcja została przeprowadzona z zastosowaniem metody Jeffersona. Przeprowadzone badanie zestawia ogół pierwszych i drugich odpowiedzi i pozwala stwierdzić, iż liczba użytych słów oraz długość wypowiedzi są znacząco większe w drugim przypadku. Podczas drugiej rozmowy stwierdzono także wyższy poziom autokorekty. Ponadto nie zaobserwowano znaczących różnic w stosowaniu mikro i długich pauz, wykrzyknień, cięć słów lub fraz.

Teaching Italian grammar involves several critical aspects, amongst which is a recurring lack of motivation in students. Therefore, combining the teaching of grammar with the use of potentially appealing resources for students is a challenge for the teacher of Italian as a foreign language (FL). With regards to this, songs represent an important didactic resource; in fact, they can motivate students’ learning, are texts full of linguistic and cultural references (such as the variety of sociolinguistic registers or rhetorical figures), and foster the memorisation of lexical and grammatical structures thanks to their intrinsic characteristics (like rhythm and melody). In order to take advantage of the potentialities of songs, the teacher of Italian as a FL should acquire both appropriate methodological competences and a broad collection of didactic techniques to present the various grammatical topics. The essay is divided into four sections: the first attempts to explore the teaching of Italian grammar from a humanistic perspective; the second is devoted to the presentation of the critical aspects that characterise it, together with the introduction of some possible solutions, such as the use of songs, which is debated in the third section. Finally, the fourth and last part is concerned with some didactic considerations about how and when to use songs for grammatical purposes.
L’insegnamento della grammatica italiana pone diverse criticità, tra cui la frequente demotivazione degli studenti. Unire le esigenze di insegnamento grammaticale con delle risorse attrattive per i discenti, dunque, si pone come una sfida per il docente di italiano LS. La canzone può rappresentare un’importante risorsa didattica. Essa, infatti, è molto motivante per gli studenti, è un testo di lingua e cultura estremamente ricco (si pensi alla varietà di registri sociolinguistici o alle figure retoriche presenti) e, grazie alle sue caratteristiche intrinseche (come il ritmo e la melodia), può favorire la memorizzazione efficace del lessico e delle strutture grammaticali. Per poter sfruttare al meglio le potenzialità della canzone, allora, occorre che il docente di lingua possieda le adeguate conoscenze metodologiche e si doti di un repertorio di tecniche didattiche ampio per presentare i diversi aspetti grammaticali. Il saggio è diviso in quattro sezioni: nella prima parte si tratta la didattica della grammatica nella prospettiva di una glottodidattica di natura umanistica; nella seconda si considerano gli aspetti critici che la caratterizzano l’insegnamento delle strutture morfosintattiche e si avanzano delle possibili soluzioni, come l’uso didattico della canzone, esplorato nella terza parte; nella quarta e ultima sezione si presentano delle considerazioni metodologiche relative alle modalità e ai tempi di utilizzo della canzone a fini grammaticali.

The article presents borrowings adopted from Romance languages wich can be found in educational aids for teaching Polish as a foreing language. The text focuses on the percentage share of borrowings in dictionnaries and beginners’ course books. It also concentrates on lists of words and topics in which those borrowings occur. The author emphasises the fact that in course books for teaching and learning Polish as a foreign language there are actually only proper loanwords while non assimilated and calques are missing. Besides neither metaphors nor foreign prefixes are not represented.

This article deals with the learning of some spatial prepositions in Italian L2 by Polish learners. Italian and Polish differ in at least two ways, as Polish expresses syntactic relations by a full case system, while Italian relies only on prepositions. More importantly, according to Talmy’s classification, Polish is a satellite-framed language while Italian is verb-framed, but later studies have shown that these categories are not perfectly binary but fuzzy. In the learning of prepositions, three elements are in play: a natural progression from simpler to more complex prepositions; the conceptualisation of the event in which the prepositions are used to express spatial relations; and the semantic categorisation of the participants into the event, in particular the basic one, Ground. By means of different elicitation techniques (questionnaires, frog story, and written tasks), many oral and written texts have been collected from Polish learners of Italian of different levels of competence. It has been revealed that the influence of the motion-event typology affects the learning of the motion expressions in an irrelevant proportion; this is probably due to the fact that Polish, like other Slavic languages, appears to be less satellite-framed than Germanic languages, being characterised by the weak autonomy of the verbal prefixes. The inappropriate uses of prepositions confirm the natural progression of complexity, and the semantic categorisation of the Ground also exerts an influence. In any case, the interplay of these different forces gives rise to different personal idiosyncrasies.
L’articolo verte sull’apprendimento di alcune preposizioni spaziali in italiano L2 di apprendenti polacchi con diversa competenza della lingua obiettivo. Il quadro teorico adottato è quello della linguistica cognitiva e del “(re-)thinking for speaking”. Secondo alcune ricerche, la distanza tipologica tra L1 e L2 condiziona il processo di apprendimento sia a livello grammaticale sia a livello cognitivo, in quanto implica la proiezione di un sistema concettuale su un altro. Quest’aspetto produce interferenza linguistica tra la lingua sorgente e la lingua obiettivo. Italiano e polacco differiscono in almeno secondo due parametri; il polacco esprime le relazioni sintattiche con un esteso sistema di casi, mentre l’italiano dispone solo delle preposizioni. Inoltre, secondo la classificazione di Talmy, il polacco è una lingua satellite-framed mentre l’italiano è verb-framed. Studi successivi hanno, però, dimostrato che queste categorie non sono mutamente esclusive ed i confini tendono ad essere sfumati. Nell’apprendimento delle preposizioni entrano in gioco tre elementi, una progressione naturale da quelle più semplici a quelle più complesse, la concettualizzazione dell’evento in cui le preposizioni sono impiegate e la categorizzazione semantica dei partecipanti all’evento. I campioni, scritti e orali, sono stati raccolti con varie tecniche di elicitazione. L’influenza che la tipologia del “motion event” esercita sul processo di apprendimento si rivela scarsa, probabilmente perché il polacco, come altre lingue slave, appaiono meno satellite-framed delle lingue germaniche, dal momento che il preverbo è dotato di meno autonomia. L’uso di preposizioni non appropriate conferma la progressione naturale della complessità.

The aim of this paper is to present LEX.CH.IT, a corpus for micro-diachronic linguistic investigations of Swiss normative acts in Italian. Italian has a peculiar position as an official minority translation language within the Swiss institutional system. Until now, few studies have focused on Swiss legal Italian, but the academic interest has been growing over the last two decades. In order to further expand on research in this field, resources such as corpora are fundamental. This is why LEX.CH.IT has been compiled. This corpus was originally created in the context of a doctoral research project, which will be briefly outlined in this paper. The main goals of the project are to determine whether clarity is a feature of Swiss legislation in Italian, whether there have been relevant evolutions over the last five decades and to assess the role of translation for a clear legislation. In the future, LEX.CH.IT could also be useful for a number of other projects aiming to shed light on the features of this language variety.
Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie korpusu do badań mikro-diachronicznych i językoznawczych szwajcarskich aktów normatywnych w języku włoskim LEX.CH.IT. Język włoski w Szwajcarii posiada szczególną pozycję „oficjalnego języka mniejszości”. Do tej pory niewiele badań koncentrowało się na szwajcarskim prawnym i prawniczym języku włoskim, ale zainteresowanie naukowe wzrosło w ciągu ostatnich dwóch dekad. Aby dalej rozwijać badania w tej dziedzinie, zasoby takie jak korpusy są fundamentalne. Dlatego też skonstruowano LEX.CH.IT. Chociaż korpus ten został pierwotnie stworzony w kontekście doktoranckiego projektu badawczego wyjaśniającego jasność szwajcarskiego ustawodawstwa w języku włoskim, może on być również przydatny w wielu innych projektach zwracając uwagę na cechy tej różnorodności językowej.

This paper aims to analyse the elements of gender ideology and neo-liberal ideology in a corpus composed of three Italian and two Serbian as a foreign language textbooks. The focus of the study is centered on the representation of activities related to the purchase of clothes and accessories, analysed from the perspective of Critical Discourse Analysis. The results indicate that neoliberal values are sustained through the idea that women are naturally predisposed to be clothes and fashion consumers. On a broader scale, the results implicate that the educational materials taken into examination lack a critical pedagogy approach, and that they do not employ the critical and the transformative potential of education, instead they are limited to the reproduction of dominant ideologies.
Il presente contributo si propone di analizzare gli elementi dell’ideologia di genere e dell’ideologia neoliberale nei manuali per l’insegnamento delle lingue straniere. Il corpus è composto da tre manuali di italiano LS e due manuali di serbo LS adottati nella didattica delle lingue straniere presso l’Università di Banja Luka, Bosnia ed Erzegovina. Il focus dell’analisi è centrato sulla rappresentazione delle attività relative all’acquisto di capi di abbigliamento. Il modello tridimensionale di Norman Fairclough, al cui interno l’analisi delle pratiche discorsive è articolata in tre tappe – descrizione, interpretazione, spiegazione – costituisce il punto di riferimento metodologico. La prima tappa dell’analisi consiste nell’individuazione delle sequenze testuali e illustrative in cui sono denotate le attività relative all’acquisto di capi di abbigliamento, mentre nelle fasi di interpretazione e spiegazione si mette in luce la natura ideologica del discorso educativo. I risultati mostrano che sia nei manuali di serbo LS che in quelli di italiano LS la rappresentazione dell’acquisto di capi di abbigliamento è caratterizzata dalla differenziazione di genere, evidente nella scelta di rendere esclusivamente i personaggi femminili protagonisti di quest’attività. L’immaginario stereotipato della moda e dello shopping in cui a consumare è solo e sempre la donna, rafforzato dal messaggio che implica che l’acquisto di abbigliamento è uno dei modi per soddisfare gli standard di bellezza e aumentare la percezione positiva di sé, conferma il sovrapporsi delle due ideologie, ovvero dimostra come gli stereotipi di genere vengono sfruttati e capitalizzati dalle dinamiche del consumo nel settore della moda e dell’abbigliamento. Siccome né gli stereotipi di genere né i valori neoliberali vengono capovolti per offrire modelli alternativi ed equilibrati, si evince che i manuali del corpus non mettono in atto il potenziale trasformativo dell’educazione.
