From the introduction: "In this article we attempt to use concepts of fuzzy set theory to formalize such ideas as `about 30', `approximately 5', few, many, etc. These ideas describe some numbers, but are not precise; hence, we call them imprecise, or fuzzy numbers. Despite their fuzzy character, one can perform various arithmetical and logical operations: X earns more than Y (even though both of them earn very little), Z earns as much as X and Y earn between them (a sum of two numbers), etc. The purpose of this paper is to define operations on these numbers so that they would reflect our intuitive ideas and would in some sense generalize corresponding operations performed on the `ordinary' real numbers. Attainment of the first objective is difficult because of its subjective character and the lack of formal criteria. For this reason, a large part of this article is devoted to the justification of this or that type of formalism.''

From the introduction: "This paper contains a review of fundamental concepts and theorems of some areas of fuzzy mathematics, and an example of their application to the theory of decision making. Elementary definitions and properties of fuzzy sets are introduced in Chapters 1 and 2 [see L. A. Zadeh, Informat. and Control 8 (1965), 338–353; MR0219427]. Chapter 3 contains rudiments of fuzzy topology as presented by C. L. Chang [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 24 (1968), 182–190; MR0236859] and C. K. Wong [ibid. 43 (1973), 697–704; MR0324613; ibid. 45 (1974), 512–521; MR0341366]. Subsequent chapters deal with fuzzy probabilistic measures on the σ-field of fuzzy sets and contain original results of the author. In the last chapter the author discusses the concepts of fuzzy programming based on papers of R. Bellman and Zadeh [Management Sci. 17 (1970/71), B141-B164; MR0301613], and C. V. Negoiţă and D. A. Ralescu [Applications of fuzzy sets to systems analysis, English translation, Wiley, New York, 1975; MR0490082].''

A variety of numerical approaches for reasoning with uncertainty have been investigated in the literature. We propose rough membership functions, rm-functions for short, as a basis for such reasoning. These functions have values in the interval [0,1] and are computable on the basis of the observable information about the objects rather than on the objects themselves. We investigate properties of the rm-functions. In particular, we show that our approach is intensional with respect to the class of all information systems [P91]. As a consequence we point out some differences between the rm-functions and the fuzzy membership functions [Z65], e.g. the rm-function values for X ∪ Y (X ∩ Y) cannot be computed in general by applying the operation max(min) to the rm-function values for X and Y.

In traditional statistics all parameters of the mathematical model and possible observations should be well defined. Sometimes such assumption appears too rigid for the real-life problems, especially when dealing with imprecise or linguistic data. To relax this rigidity fuzzy methods are incorporated into statistics. This paper is devoted to statistical inference about the population median in the presence of vague data. We propose the notion of fuzzy median. Then we suggest a fuzzy estimator and fuzzy confidence interval for the median. Next we discuss the problem of hypothesis testing concerning the median in the presence of imprecise data. All methods presented are distribution-free.

This paper addresses an important issue of information of granulation and relationships between the size of information granules and the ensuing robustness aspects. The use of shadowed sets helps identify and quantify absorption properties of set-based information granules. Discussed is also a problem of determining an optimal level of information granulation arising in the presence of noisy data. The study proposes a new architecture of granular computing involving continuous and granulated variables. Numerical examples are also included.

Opis:
The paper presents an approach to detecting dependence of a decision-maker's actions (or decisions) on conditions with respect to a certain type of fuzzy rules, namely gradual rules. Gradual rules are of the form "the more c is C, the more d is D", where C and D are L-fuzzy sets on the domain of the attributes c and d with membership values possibly in different lattices, respectively. The decision-maker's actions and conditions for those are found in a data base-like system, called an information system. We use the information system to define relations corresponding to L-fuzzy sets, and we define weakening modifiers by these relations. These modifiers are closure operators in the corresponding topologies, and we can define fineness relation between L-fuzzy sets. This relation is useful when comparing different decision-maker's actions. We define strong degree and topological degree of depedence of the attributes (with respect to a gradual rule), and we study some properties of those. Finally, we present a small application.

Opis:
There are two different concepts that are often used incorrectly - randomness and imprecision. The randomness is described on the basis of the theory of probability, whereas the analysis of the imprecision is a subject of research of the fuzzy sets theory. The theory of reliability uses the Hasofer-Lind's index for the assessment of probability of failure of structureswhich are risked by a stability loss. The limit state function in distinction of the classical one was described by applying the fuzzy sets theory. Three fuzzy areas were defined: desirable states, limit states and undesirable states. The suitable probabilities were calculated using the approximation method FORM. It enabled taking into account in the reliability analysis the weakening of a structure before appearing of the limit point on the equilibrium path.
Do obliczenia odpowiednich prawdopodobieństw użyto aproksymacyjnej metody FORM. Takie postępowanie umożliwia uwzględnienie w analizie niezawodności osłabiania się konstrukcji jeszcze przed osiągnięciem punktu granicznego na ścieżce równowagi.

The aim of the paper is to outline an idea of solving the problem of the vagueness of concepts. The starting point is a definition of the concept of vague knowledge. One of the primary goals is a formal justification of the classical viewpoint on the controversy about the truth and object reference of expressions including vague terms. It is proved that grasping the vagueness in the language aspect is possible through the extension of classical logic to the logic of sentences which may contain vague terms. The theoretical framework of the conception refers to the theory of Pawlak's rough sets and is connected with Zadeh's fuzzy set theory as well as bag (or multiset) theory. In the considerations formal logic means and the concept system of set theory have been used. The paper can be regarded as an outline of the logical theory of vague concepts.

The aim of this paper is to present a constructive methodology and algorithms for operations with fuzzy sets of type 2. The need to elaborate this methodology came from practical problems of Decision Making. To realize the methodology, some simplifications of the problem have been introduced. Particularly, only the trapezium form of membership functions was used. To highlight the difference between the proposed approach and the classical theory of fuzzy sets of type 2, the terms "hyperfuzzy set" and "hyperfuzzy function" have been introduced. Some base situations of hyperfuzzy functions with real arguments and real functions of hyperfuzzy arguments are performed.

Opis:
This paper uses the notion of relative sets in relation to fuzzy set theory to provide a mathematical framework to analyze communication among agents. Each relative set partitions all objects into four distinct regions corresponding to four truth-values of Belnap’s logic. Two orderings on relative sets are considered; one is an extension of the classical set inclusion ordering while the other is a new ordering of knowledge or information. According to these orderings, we can divide set theoretic problems into two major categories: reasoning problems and communicating problems. In the first category, an agent tries to extract a sound decision through granular reasoning. In this case, a granule represents a concept or a word. In the second category, each granule relates to an agent, and the problem is to compare agents’ knowledge about concepts by their related granules, e.g. a knowledge reduction problem. Then, we concentrate on the second category of problems and try to investigate this kind of problems in the context of fuzzy set theory. In this way, we could provide a basis for modeling and analyzing the relations among machines, which could communicate with each other using words and granules.

Computational Intelligence has emerged as a synergistic environment of Granular Computing (including fuzzy sets, rough sets, interval analysis), neural networks and evolutionary optimisation. This symbiotic framework addresses the needs of system modelling with regard to its transparency, accuracy and user friendliness. This becomes of paramount interest in various modelling in bioinformatics especially when we are concerned with decision-making processes. The objective of this study is to elaborate on the two essential features of CI that is Granular Computing and the resulting aspects of logic-oriented processing and its transparency. As the name stipulates, Granular Computing is concerned with processing carried out at a level of coherent conceptual entities - information granules. Such granules are viewed as inherently conceptual entities formed at some level of abstraction whose processing is rooted in the language of logic (especially, many valued or fuzzy logic). The logic facet of processing is cast in the realm of fuzzy logic and fuzzy sets that construct a consistent processing background necessary for operating on information granules. Several main categories of logic processing units (logic neurons) are discussed that support aggregative (and-like and or-like operators) and referential logic mechanisms (dominance, inclusion, and matching). We show how the logic neurons contribute to high functional transparency of granular processing, help capture prior domain knowledge and give rise to a diversity of the resulting models.

A perception-based interpretation of evaluation systems is proposed in this paper. Thus, a perception-based approach to create intelligent systems is considered. The evaluation systems can be employed eg. in order to assess student exams, as well as to other applications. Evaluation marks used in these systems are given as perceptions expressed by words. The words play the role of labels of perceptions, and are represented by fuzzy sets. This means that the idea of perception-based systems, introduced by Zadeh, is applied. Various algorithms of overall assessment are suggested in this paper. Overall evaluation is produced as an aggregation of component evaluation marks. Systems of this kind can be obtained using fuzzy neurons, so fuzzy neural networks are also mentioned as a method of perception-based reasoning. The usefulness in artificial intelligence of both fuzzy sets and neural networks, and especially a combination of these, is shown.

In the paper two kinds of uncertainty: randomness and imprecision are proposed to be considered in a structure description. Imprecise experts' opinions can be described using fuzzy numbers. As a results, the reliability analysis of a structure can be based on the limit state function with fuzzy parameters. As a consequence, the structural failure or survival can be treated as fuzzy events. The probabilities of these fuzzy events can be the upper and the lower estimations of the structural reliability. They can be achieved using well-known reliability methods (e.g. Hasofer-Lind index and Monte Carlo simulations). They can be used as a base for the calibration of partial safety factors in desing codes.

Prawdopodobieństwa tych zdarzeń stanowić będą dolne i górne oszacowanie niezawodności konstrukcji.
