The $L^p$ boundedness(1 < p < ∞) of Littlewood-Paley's g-function, Lusin's S function, Littlewood-Paley's $g*_λ$-functions, and the Marcinkiewicz function is well known. In a sense, one can regard the Marcinkiewicz function as a variant of Littlewood-Paley's g-function. In this note, we treat counterparts $μ_{S}^{ϱ}$ and $μ_{λ}^{*,ϱ}$ to S and $g*_λ$. The definition of $μ_{S}^{ϱ}(f)$ is as follows: $μ_{S}^{ϱ}(f)(x) = (ʃ_{|y-x| < t}| 1/t^{ϱ} ʃ_{|z|≤ t} Ω(z)/(|z|^{n-ϱ}) f(y-z) dz|^2 (dydt)/(t^{n+1}) )^{1/2}$, where Ω(x) is a homogeneous function of degree 0 and Lipschitz continuous of order β (0 < β ≤ 1) on the unit sphere $S^{n-1}$, and $ʃ_{S^{n-1}} Ω(x')dσ(x') = 0$. We show that if σ = Reϱ > 0, then $μ_{S}^{ϱ}$ is $L^p$ bounded for max(1,2n/(n+2σ) < p < ∞, and for 0 < ϱ ≤ n/2 and 1 ≤ p ≤ 2n/(n+2ϱ), then $L^p$ boundedness does not hold in general, in contrast to the case of the S function. Similar results hold for $μ_{λ}^{*,ϱ}$. Their boundedness in the Campanato space $ε^{α,p}$ is also considered.

Extremal coefficient properties of Pick functions are proved. Even coefficients of analytic univalent functions f with |f(z)| < M, |z| < 1, are bounded by the corresponding coefficients of the Pick functions for large M. This proves a conjecture of Jakubowski. Moreover, it is shown that the Pick functions are not extremal for a similar problem for odd coefficients.

Some conditions under which any subadditive function is periodic are presented. It is shown that the boundedness from below in a neighborhood of a point of a subadditive periodic (s.p.) function implies its nonnegativity, and the boundedness from above in a neighborhood of a point implies it nonnegativity and global boundedness from above. A necessary and sufficient condition for existence of a subadditive periodic extension of a function ƒ0 : [0, 1) ? R is given. The continuity, differentiability of a s.p. function is discussed, and an example of a continuous nowhere differentiable s.p. function is presented. The functions which are the sums of linear functions and s.p. functions are characterized. The refinements of some known results on the continuity of subadditive functions are presented.

In this investigation, we consider Bayesian and Non-Bayesian estimation problems of unknown scale parameter of Gamma distribution assuming the shape parameter as known and derive Bayes and Classical (Non-Bayes) estimators of the scale parameter. Bayes estimators are obtained under symmetric (squared error) and asymmetric (linex and precautionary) loss functions using a non-informative prior. The risk efficiency of Bayes estimators is also obtained under these loss functions. Finally, the simulation study is done to compare the performance of these estimators using MATLAB software.

The paper focuses on the link between infrastructure and productivity in the Polish economy. The researcher aims to estimate the direct elasticity of GDP with regard to infrastructure and check the indirect influence of infrastructure on productivity. The adopted research method is based on estimating a three-factor production function for Poland, covering capital, labor and infrastructure. Two forms of the production function were adopted, the Cobb-Douglas function and the translog function. The production function was estimated on the basis of data for Poland’s 16 provinces in 2000-2006. The findings obtained by the author show that infrastructure is an important factor influencing production. The estimated direct elasticity of GDP to infrastructure ranged from 0.11 to 0.22 depending on the production function and the variables used. This level of elasticity is compatible with research findings for other countries, the author says. However, Mackiewicz-Łyziak’s research yielded no conclusive findings on the influence of infrastructure on productivity in the case of other production factors.

We discuss several extensions of binary Boolean functions acting on the domain [0, 1]. Formally, there are 16 disjoint classes of such functions, covering a majority of binary functions considered in fuzzy set theory. We introduce and discuss dualities in this framework, stressing the links between different subclasses of considered functions, e.g., the link between conjunctive and implication functions. Special classes of considered functions are characterized, among others, by particular kinds of monotonicity. Relaxing these constraints by considering monotonicity in one direction only, we generalize standard classes of aggregation functions, implications, semicopulas, etc., into larger classes called pre-aggregations, pre-implications, pre-semicopulas, etc. Note that the dualities discussed for the standard classes also relate the new extended classes of pre-functions.

Modelling lifetime data with simple mathematical representations and an ease in obtaining the parameter estimate of survival models are crucial quests pursued by survival researchers. In this paper, we derived and introduced a one-parameter distribution called the Agu-Eghwerido (AGUE) distribution with its simple mathematical representation. The regression model of the AGUE distribution was also presented. Several basic properties of the new distribution, such as reliability measures, mean residual function, median, moment generating function, skewness, kurtosis, coefficient of variation, and index of dispersion, were derived. The estimation of the proposed distribution parameter was based on the maximum likelihood estimation method. The real-life applications of the distribution were illustrated using two real lifetime negatively and positively skewed data sets. The new distribution provides a better fit than the Pranav, exponential, and Lindley distributions for the data sets. The simulation results showed that the increase in parameter values decreases the mean squared error value. Similarly, the mean estimate tends towards the true parameter value as the sample sizes increase.

Motivated by results on strongly convex and strongly Jensen-convex functions by R. Ger and K. Nikodem in [Strongly convex functions of higher order, Nonlinear Anal. 74 (2011), 661-665] we investigate strongly Wright-convex functions of higher order and we prove decomposition and characterization theorems for them. Our decomposition theorem states that a function / is strongly Wright-convex of order n if and only if it is of the form [formula], where g is a (continuous) n-convex function and p is a polynomial function of degree n. This is a counterpart of Ng's decomposition theorem for Wright-convex functions. We also characterize higher order strongly Wright-convex functions via generalized derivatives.

The interval function and the induced path function are two well studied class of set functions of a connected graph having interesting properties and applications to convexity, metric graph theory. Both these functions can be framed as special instances of a general set function termed as a transit function defined on the Cartesian product of a non-empty set V to the power set of V satisfying the expansive, symmetric and idempotent axioms. In this paper, we propose a set of independent first order betweenness axioms on an arbitrary transit function and provide characterization of the interval function of Ptolemaic graphs and the induced path function of chordal graphs in terms of an arbitrary transit function. This in turn gives new characterizations of the Ptolemaic and chordal graphs.

The study deals with social and educational functions of (literary) narratives – both oral and written – in everyday life of a socially grounded individual. Narratives (or stories told or read) play an essential role in building and strengthening social bonds within a community (by spending time together, informing its members of preferred social values and behaviour patterns, etc.) The author sustains that narratives circulating within a particular community (or ethnic group, nation) should be viewed and analyzed from the perspective of cultural anthropology. As an educational tool, stories are utilized not only in families and schools, but also in penitentiary and correctional institutions or in public reading courses. The author also pays attention to particular structural components of “captivating” narratives (such as novelty, surprise, cognitive and/or emotional relevance to the reader, etc.) and so-called narrative universals – themes, types of characters, plots and settings that are common to all cultures worldwide (such as romantic love, human desires and needs, sacrifice, etc.).

The joint model of the system operation process and the system multi-state reliability is applied to the reliability and risk evaluation of the container gantry crane. The container gantry crane is described and its operation process unknown parameters are identified on the basis of real statistical data. The mean values of the container gantry crane operation process unconditional sojourn times in particular operation states are found and applied to determining this process transient probabilities in these states. The container gantry crane different reliability structures in various its operation states are fixed and their conditional reliability functions on the basis of data coming from experts are approximately determined. Finally, after applying earlier estimated transient probabilities and system conditional reliability functions in particular operation states the unconditional reliability function, the mean values and standard deviations of the container gantry crane lifetimes in particular reliability states, risk function and the moment when the risk exceeds a critical value are found. he joint model of the system operation process and the system multi-state reliability is applied to the reliability and risk evaluation of the container gantry crane.
