Opis:
The article considers methodological problems in the study of racist attitudes and beliefs among individuals that manifest such attitudes and beliefs and among people who experience racist behaviour. The phenomenon of racism takes different forms, but it always includes the stigmatizing traits of perceived differences in the physical appearance of a human being, leading to exclusion, discrimination and persecution. The study of racism is important because of its topicality and growing presence in various places in the world. However, the study of racism encounters serious methodological problems: firstly, related to the definition of racism, secondly, owing to the desire of respondents to be politically correct and reluctance to talk about their experiences. The situation of a researcher outsider and a researcher- insider are different, sometimes an anthropologist studying natives – both positions have advantages and disadvantages. The article concludes that the only morally transparent and efficient method for a racism researcher is the engaged study of racism.

Opis:
The article examines the narrative of the diary „My Siberian Year” written by one of the first women-anthropologists-Maria Czaplicka. There is a notable absence of discussion about her achievements, despite the fact that her book significantly exceeds the frames of the anthropological narrative of her times. In this paper the perspective refers to the experience of strangeness/otherness as a constitutive part of any fieldwork. This category may be analyzed within different dimensions, which concurrently shed light on the nature of the relationships between people, culture and environment.

The 360-degree camera is a relatively new technology that might become an effective tool for the development of students and teachers and overall educational improvement. As “normal” video provides a maximum 130-degree perspective, it could not offer a complex capture of education. This paper presents a way to use a 360-degree camera during two different modes of trainee teachers’ fieldwork and proposes how to evaluate this form of education in terms of teacher-student-environment interactions by identifying the occurrence and duration of each type of interaction. It is evident that the type and intensity of interactions affect fieldwork significantly and may lead to different depths of learning.

Aim. The aim of this paper is to depict difficulties in presenting ethnographically collected narratives - recorded and transcripted – as written texts. Multifaceted fieldwork experience when translated into form required in academic work is unavoidably reduced. It losts variety of aspects impossible to express just by written language required by academic discourse. Simultaneously written language is influencing and shaping pre-textual fieldwork experience. Method. The study is a theoretical afterthought based on the fieldwork experience gained during research concerning modes of constructing reminiscent narratives in one of lower-silesian villages in years 2013-2016.   Resullt and Conclusions. The analysis shows indispensable impact of medium of written language of process of gaining and presenting ethnographical knowledge. It presents its influence and limitations in the process of building fieldwork experience.

Shaffir (1998:63) writes, “We must learn to reclaim the virtue of patience. When we enhance the pace of doing research, it is often at the expense of acquiring a deep appreciation of the research problem.” This paper engages Shaffir’s claim by examining the importance of undertaking a patient sociology. What is the virtue to be found in prolonged and sustained work? How does this speak to the relationships found in field research and in the identities that inform our work as researchers and theorists? In contrast to recent trends towards various versions of instant or short-term ethnography (e.g., Pink and Morgan 2013) this paper argues for the merits of “slow” ethnography by examining the advantages of relational patience, perspectival patience, and the patience required to fully appreciate omissions, rarities, and secrets of the group.

This article concerns a fragment of research interests of the ethnographer from Lodz – professor Jaworska. In fact, Jaworska neither created the methodological theory of doing an ethnographical field research in a rural socio-cultural context nor the special theory connected with rural study, despite the fact that the most important area for her (in terms of science as well as her personal interests) were the Carpathian villages and the type of pastoral economy. The author of the text analyzes the letters of Jaworska written over 40 years, which reflect Jaworska’s attitude to her mountain field work carried out there as well as to the area itself.

The effects of the process are on one side personal bonds between researcher and researchees (sometimes deep friendship and affection), and on the other side his/her engagement in studied society problems. The author uses not only literature about anthropological reflection on ethical issues in fieldwork, but also implies Maria Ossowska’s works, furnishing rich inspirations.

Opis:
This article deals with fieldwork in challenging research contexts that make preparation for field research particularly difficult. Challenging contexts include generally insecure places, politicized contexts, and unknown settings. Drawing on our experience in the field, we discuss four challenges that are common across these contexts: access, positionality, researcher well-being, and research design and data collection. Bringing together insights from fieldwork with urban elites and in the countryside, this paper describes problems that occurred in both settings and identifies a set of interpersonal skills that helped the authors to tackle the challenges of the field and seize the opportunities it offered. This article posits that recognizing the importance of certain interpersonal skills, namely: openness, empathy, humility, and flexibility, precedes the identification of practical tools. Interpersonal skills, instead, focus on a general attitude that underlies researchers’ capacity to make informed choices about specific courses of actions, preparing fieldworkers to be prepared to confront problems once they arise.

Opis:
Agricultural land abandonment is an elusive phenomenon, as yet not fully defined. Even though it is common in Polish landscape, there are no measures to date that could quantify the phenomenon. Neither the data from the Central Statistical Office, nor the data from land registers include information on land abandonment. Therefore, there is a need for a systematic approach that could quantify and determine the extent of land abandonment. A fieldwork approach was designed for the purpose, and research was conducted on a test area of Okocim village in Małopolska region. Vegetation cover that could indicate the existence of land abandonment on the agricultural areas – such as trees, brushwood, and grass cover – was examined using a representative sample of 145 test fields. The fieldwork approach revealed that the extent of land abandonment in the test area is 37% of all areas officially classified as agricultural, which shows that the scale of the phenomenon is significant, and that there is a need to develop an approach to provide a more detailed picture of the distribution of land abandonment.

Opis:
This article provides an overview of a subject previously not discussed in the Polish ethnomusicological literature, namely, the phenomenon of e-fieldwork – ethnomusicological fieldwork on the Internet, discussed here from both the Polish and the global perspective. Based on the (mostly English-language) subject literature, as well as responses from a brief questionnaire conducted among Polish researchers, the author explains how ethnomusicologists use the Internet for various purposes, which include preparing for field trips, conducting research online, collecting materials and information, and maintaining contact with respondents (to explore the subject at greater length or to send recorded materials). The author discusses issues relating to methodology (what to study and how, available techniques and methods), logistics and technology (contact with informants, access to data, identifying interlocutors), identity (who the researchers are and how they feel on the Internet) and terminology (terms currently used, particularly in English, relating to online ethnomusicological research practice). Some ethical and legal issues are also signalled (EU GDPR). Citing ethnomusicological studies conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic, the author shows how that situation altered ethnomusicologists’ lives, what and how research was conducted in that period, and whether – and if so, how – the way people worked was modified in the changed circumstances.

Aim.  The aim is to depict specificy of fieldnotes  as a first result of research experience are standing between perception which obviously has to be personal (even if it's based on non-individual experience) and text which main feature is to be intersubjectively understandable. Method. The study is based on experience of conducting collaborative fieldwork and writing common fieldnotes. Paper itself is also an example of collaborative work - written together is an opportunity to share theoretical perspective on team research grounded in fieldwork experience in process. Resullt and Conclusions. Fieldnotes as a part of fieldwork process are first step of translation from subjective experience to objective knowledge. In the case of collaborative writing, unlike in the case of report where the final research result is presented which can have the form of general, conclusion, fieldnotes are much more dynamic – become domain of negotiation revealing crucial points of collective fieldwork experience.

The article promotes the argument that anthropological or ethnological knowledge is primarily produced through ethnographies that present fieldwork experience. As publications that appear after returning home, they provide the social sciences with the most recent information about the present reality. Moreover, that is where we can find new methodological approaches and new theoretical concepts. Our contemporary experience in such a fast-changing world shows the uselessness of the formerly applied analytical notions, forcing us to search for a new form of description and new interpretative categories. The article is actually a survey of the best known fieldwork monographs presented through theories, schools and trends in cultural and social anthropology that have been constituted or overcome by these very monographs, which are milestones in over a century of ethnological/anthropological research. As the last ones are from the 21st century, they present not only the newest research results, but also the most up-to-date methodologies.

Opis:
The article presents a typology of football supporters illustrated by the example of Polonia Warszawa supporters. The aim of the paper is to describe activities and attitudes of supporters and to assess to what extent the proposed typology modifies and enriches previous studies. As a basis for comparison the article uses a popular division of football fans into ultras, hooligans, pseudo-fans, “picnics”, as well as the typology presented by Antonowicz and Wrzesiński (2009) which describes supporters as members of a specific religion group. Qualitative techniques were used in the research, including semi-structured interviews and hidden participant observation. The main factors which differentiate the football audience are: age, stadium attendance seniority, involvement in team supporting during the game and group membership. The proposed new typology of football supporters distinguishes eight categories: leaders, ultras movement, associated supporters, activists, match fanatics, soul-supporters, precursors and spectators.
