Researchers in the field of instructed second language acquisition have been examining the issue of how learners interact with input by conducting research measuring particular kinds of instructional interventions (input-oriented and meaning-based). These interventions include such things as input flood, textual enhancement and processing instruction. Although the findings are not completely conclusive on whether these instructional interventions have an impact on acquisition, it is clear that we have witnessed a shift in the field from the original question “Does instruction make a difference?” to the more specific question “Does manipulating input make a difference?” In this article, the key classroom-based research conducted to measure the relative effects of different types of enhancement and manipulation is reviewed. Three main research foci are considered: (a) research measuring the effects of saturating the input with the target form (input flood), (b) research measuring the effects of different types of textual enhancements to draw learners’ attention to the target form, and (c) research measuring input restructuring to improve interpretation and processing of target forms or structures (processing instruction).

Microscopic technology has recently flourished, allowing unparalleled viewing of microscopic elements invisible to the normal eye. Still, the existence of unavoidable constraints led on many occasions to have low contrast scanning electron microscopic (SEM) images. Thus, a noncomplex multiphase (NM) algorithm is proposed in this study to provide better contrast for various SEM images. The developed algorithm contains the following stages: first, the intensities of the degraded image are modified using a two-step regularization procedure. Next, a gamma-corrected cumulative distribution function of the logarithmic uniform distribution approach is applied for contrast enhancement. Finally, an automated histogram expansion technique is used to redistribute the pixels of the image properly. The NM algorithm is applied to natural-contrast distorted SEM images, as well as its results are compared with six algorithms with different processing notions. To assess the quality of images, three modern metrics are utilized, in that each metric measures the quality based on unique aspects. Extensive appraisals revealed the adequate processing abilities of the NM algorithm, as it can process many images suitably and its performances outperformed many available contrast enhancement algorithms in different aspects.

Human enhancement affects all members of society and is thus closely linked to issues of social justice: up to now, the promises and perils of enhancement are usually only known to, and thus used, by few members of society. This can lead to individual competitive advantages that create or widen social gaps. Broad public information is, therefore, key to ensure that enhancement does not conflict with the principle of equality of opportunities. As possible means of public information, literature and films are able to counter such possible social injustice, which is why they may be allotted a central role in the ethical debates on human enhancement. Two aspects will be considered in this regard: 1) enhancement in art and 2) through art. 1) The extent to which artistic depictions and public information and perceptions of enhancement may be intertwined will be illustrated by two examples where both texts and their accompanying paratexts had a particular bearing on the public debate on enhancement: the film Gattaca of 1997 and the novel Never let me go (2005) by Nobel laureate Kazuo Ishiguro. 2) The second part of the paper is dedicated to the question of how far enhancing selected groups of society may contribute to a greater common good and which potentials art can offer in this regard. Three groups of persons will be taken into account: 1) clinical ethics committees, 2) physicians, and 3) patients.

In this article I discuss one of the most significant areas of bioethical interest, which is the problem of moral enhancement. Since I claim that the crucial issue in the current debate on human bioenhancement is the problem of agency, I bring out and examine the conditions of possibility of selfunderstanding, acting subjects attributing responsible authorship for their actions to themselves. I shall argue that the very idea of moral enhancement, properly understood, fails to justify the claims that enhancing the “biological” factor that plays a part in the process of making moral choices, whether through biomedical or genetic interventions, will actually increase the probability of having “morally better future motives”.

A metamaterial in the form of a periodic lattice of split-ring resonators on a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure was numerically studied at terahertz frequencies. A finite-difference time-domain algorithm was applied to calculate distribution of the electromagnetic field in the layer positioned at 100 nm below the heterostructure surface where a two-dimensional electron gas typically resides in real structures. The results allowed to determine the resonant frequencies of the metamaterial as well as an enhancement factor of the electric field as a function of the period of the metamaterial's lattice.

This paper proposes a speech enhancement method using the multi-scales and multi-thresholds of the auditory perception wavelet transform, which is suitable for a low SNR (signal to noise ratio) environment. This method achieves the goal of noise reduction according to the threshold processing of the human ear’s auditory masking effect on the auditory perception wavelet transform parameters of a speech signal. At the same time, in order to prevent high frequency loss during the process of noise suppression, we first make a voicing decision based on the speech signals. Afterwards, we process the unvoiced sound segment and the voiced sound segment according to the different thresholds and different judgments. Lastly, we perform objective and subjective tests on the enhanced speech. The results show that, compared to other spectral subtractions, our method keeps the components of unvoiced sound intact, while it suppresses the residual noise and the background noise. Thus, the enhanced speech has better clarity and intelligibility.

Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance (LSPR) mediated electromagnetic field enhancement play a vital role in enhancing the performance of bio-molecular sensors, photovoltaic cells and Raman spectroscopy (e.g., in SERS) etc., to name only a few. It is now well established that the field amplification factor (mode squared field) ~106 for spherical shaped plasmonic nanoparticle dimers is significantly higher than the amplification factor of a monomer which is ~103. In this work, a theoretical and semi-analytical approach based on multipole spectral expansion is used to investigate the electric field enhancement in the gap region of spherical nanoparticle dimers of Al, Rh, Ag, and Au. The dimer exhibit rich spectra compared to its isolated counterpart. For example, in contrast to a monomer, the dimer spectra consists of multiple resonant peaks which can be fine tuned by varying particle size and/or inter-particle separation. Moreover, the enhancement in dimer is several orders higher than that in monomers. Rich spectral features in dimer spectra arise from the interaction between particle plasmons of constituent NPs and their hybridization, which results in the splitting of plasmonic energy levels. We carry out, systematic investigation of these systems to quantify the effect of particle size, interparticle separation and metal type (Al, Ag, Au, Rh) on electric field enhancement.

The growing popularity of so-called cognitive enhancement technologies raises questions about their impact on the sphere of individual legal responsibility. This article examines the issue of whether, in a situation where a surgeon, prone to making a fatigue-related medical error, refuses to undergo a safe cognitive enhancement before surgery, the surgeon can be attributed liability for damages. The answer to this question is negative, however, as indicated in the article, the impossibility of attributing damages is a result of (1) the lack of professional guidelines requiring doctors to undergo cognitive enhancement; (2) the lack of scientific evidence that the use of such measures results in the elimination of fatigue and reduces the risk of error. As a result, the negative answer to the analyzed question is not determined by the solution of the model of liability for damages adopted in Polish law, but rather by the current state of research on cognitive improvement. This gives the analysis a universal character and makes it possible to relate the method adopted in it to new results of research on means of cognitive enhancement if any.

The exponential growth of technological advancements creates an environment in which the traditionally conceived cognitive enhancement – education – must constantly redefine itself in the face of the invasive presence of A.I., the social media and various biotechnologies that strive to augment the effect-oriented performance. Whereas on the conceptual level there is a visible shift from the static to flow-modelled education, and the rising trend to invest in the skills like flexibility and creativity, not many of emerging technologies are seriously considered as educational tools. The paper looks into the varieties of cognitive enhancement within educational context. Of major concern are the already available technologies of collective intelligence and nootropics, as well as experimental dowloadable learning. I review the problems occasioned by these technologies, as well as the existing solutions, which tend to incorporate rather than exclude the possibilities of radical cognitive enhancement.

The article presents a method of compression of High Dynamic Range of infrared image and its details enhancement. The method is based on aggregation of partial images with different ranges of pixel values generated using a weighting function. Aggregation of images could be performed according to proposed scheme with use of the optimal algorithm selected by user. As a result of grammaticalisation processes, within various constructions the pronoun es could establish itself as the subject of these constructions. Amongst them, verbs describing the weather constitute a rather small and semantically defined verb subclass. The es-subject is regarded as a peripheral subject realisation with an abstract meaning. Since the ‘weather’ verbs are a verb group firmly anchored in the German verb system, analogous to other constructions, their primary valence varies too. The valence enhancement, i.e. the two- or multi-digit usage, allows the ‘weather’ verbs to be used as verbs of visual perception, verbs of movement, and verba dicendi. Based on the verb regnen ‘to rain’, the article more closely examines the synchronous variability of its valence.

Many prominent bioethicists have recently raised the question of the possibility of moral status enhancement. In this paper I discuss the arguments advanced by Nicholas Agar for the possible existence of the postpersons. I argue that in spite of the many limitations and shortcomings of Agar’s account, there are no conclusive reasons to rule out the possibility of moral status enhancement. However, if post-persons are as they are described by Agar, the fact of their possibility is less interesting and ethically relevant than it might seem. Most importantly, the account of post-persons given by Agar is rather an outcome of some implausible assumptions. I propose that Agar conflates the ethical with the scientific and dismisses the importance of phenomenology in framing our ethical outlook. Also, he seems to follow the assumption made by many utilitarian ethicists that such features as sentience and cognitive capacities have some universal relevance. This accounts for the delusion that we can view our moral attitudes from the point of view of the Universe.

Because of rapidly changing customer requirements, current company-focused measures to enhance flexibility at the supply chain level are not sufficient. Therefore, flexible supply chain performance is essential for firms aiming to fulfill service level agreements despite increasing complexity, shorter delivery times, and dynamic market demands. As a method of training neurofeedback has proved to be effective in education and therapy of children (e.g., with ADHD, autism spectrum or specific learning disorders). However, there are no neurofeedback training protocols targeting individuals with a mild intellectual disability. Therefore, I designed a neurofeedback procedure for children with this disability; it focuses on attention span training. In this study I presented the pre-planned procedure to the child’s parent to determine whether the proposed method is feasible for work with a child with a mild intellectual disability. After learning the parents’ opinion, I indicate the possible further stages of developing a neurofeedback strategy for working with children with a mild intellectual disability. Finally, I demonstrate the future directions of research and planning of neurofeedback procedures for individuals with special needs.

Opis:
A novel speech enhancement method based on generalized sidelobe canceller (GSC) structure is presented. We show that it is possible to reduce audible speech distortions and preserve residual noise level under acoustic model uncertainties. It can be done by constraining a speech leakage power according to masking phenomena and conditional minimizing the residual noise power. We implemented the proposed approach using a simple delay-and-sum beamformer model. Finally a comparative evaluation of the selected methods is performed using objective speech quality measures. The results show that the novel method outperforms conventional one providing lower speech distortions.
Prezentowana jest nowa metoda uzdatniania mowy w oparciu o strukturę uogólnionego tłumika listków bocznych. Wykazujemy, ze możliwe jest zmniejszenie słyszalnych zniekształceń mowy przy zachowaniu stałego poziomu szumu rezydualnego, dla modeli przybliżonych środowiska akustycznego. Może to być dokonane poprzez uwarunkowanie poziomu mocy przecieku mowy zgodnie ze zjawiskiem maskowania oraz minimalizację warunkową mocy szumu rezydualnego. Proponowane podejście zaimplementowano w oparciu o prosty model beamformera opóźniająco-sumującego. Ostatecznie przeprowadzono ocenę porównawczą wybranych metod z wykorzystaniem obiektywnych miar jakości mowy. Wyniki pokazują, że nowa metoda przewyższa konwencjonalną zapewniając mniejsze zniekształcenia mowy.

The study aims at showing how the dynamics of tracer gradient accounts for the stirring mechanism produced by a periodically forced flow relevant to practical mixing operation. The numerical simulation uses the equations for the orientation and norm of the tracer gradient and an analytic model for velocity. To a large extent, the micromixer properties over different ranges of the Strouhal number are explained through the response of the tracer gradient orientation to the tilting of strain principal axes resulting from flow forcing. The analysis also reveals a rich picture of stirring as the Strouhal number is varied.

Opis:
The paper reviews the book written by F.M. Kamm, entitled Bioethical Prescriptions: To Create, End, Choose, and Improve Lives (published in Oxford: Oxford University Press in 2013, pp. 599). Kamm is one of the most prominent analytical philosophers in moral philosophy, known from such works as Intricate Ethics (2007). She defends the rights-based approach to ethics and is also famous from constructing multilayered moral dilemmas. The review poses methodological questions, of whether scientific-like thought experiments performed in a moral lab, and the Method of Hypothetical Cases are able to transform our ethical dilemmas and provide any solutions. In the final part of the review, the first chapter of the book on Tolstoy’s essay (The Death of Ivan Ilych) is discussed in more detail.

In this paper I undertake to analyze the way in which the arrival of HETs may influence the therapeutic relationship between the medical doctor and the patient. I begin with presenting he notion of transhumanism, insisting especially on the fact that some of the technologies that can be classified as HETs are already in use. As a result, the traditionally difficult task of defining health and a disease is becoming even more complicated. This circumstance poses the risk that medical doctors in their relationship with the patient, because of the possibilities offered by new technologies, will oscillate in their professional practice between helping the patient to recover and satisfying needs that are not justified by the considerations of health. I will try to show how the therapeutic relationship between the medical doctor and the patient may be transformed because of new technologies by using the example of IVF procedure applied to postmenopausal patients. In order to understand why the relationship between the medical doctors and their patients is so vulnerable in the context of transhumanism, I propose to re-analyze the most basic notions which help us understand the nature of the therapeutic relationship: the status of medicine as contrasted with technology, basic principles of medical ethics, the notion of a disease and an illness.

The current generation paving the path for new research marks a milestone to attain the ancient goal of improving our cognition. To date, increased prevalence of cognitive enhancers by healthy people has raised the scientific community’s attention as well as media coverage. In particular, nootropics such as piracetam promise to offer modest improvements in cognitive performance. The long-lasting impetus of this “holistic enhancer” convinced scientists as well as ethicists to discuss its potential ethical implications and future directions. Moreover, there are discrepancies in the concept of a true nootropic between pharmacology and contemporary public culture. Here, I review the ethical aspects of nootropics raised by its potential use in cognition enhancement and substantiate the epistemological commentary on the concept of nootropic.

Until recently it was believed that Navier’s boundary condition could be given as a rigorous foundation for slip phenomena. Due to the latest measurements in the mass flow rate of a gas flowing through nano- and microchannels, several discrepancies in the mathematical modelling have been found. Thus, in the literature, the opinion persists for the Navier slip condition to be correct only under certain circumstances, particularly those restricted to the first order boundary conditions. One of many ways to eliminate this discrepancy, which is extensively employed in the contemporary literature, is to develop a variety of the so-called second order boundary conditions. This path, however, seems incorrect since it lacks consistency between the bulk stress tensor and its boundary representation. In the paper we propose to replace the classical Navier slip condition with the new, more general Navier-Stokes slip boundary condition. Instead of the usual method of consideration, the boundary condition is presented as following from the mass and momentum balances within a thin, shell-like moving layer. Owing to this, the problem of consistency between the internal and external friction in a viscous fluid is solved within the framework of new layer balances, and a proper form of constitutive relations for friction and mobility forces. Finally, the common features of the Navier, Stokes, Maxwell and Reynolds concepts of a boundary slip layer are compared and revalorized. The classifications of different mobility mechanisms, important for flows in nano-, microchannels are also discussed.

Opis:
Lean has established itself as the primordial approach to obtain operational excellence. Its simple and intuitive techniques focus on reducing lead time through continuous improvement, involving all levels of employees in the organization. However, the rate of successful implementations has remained low. This paper contributes to the understanding of continuous improvement in a Lean context, by analyzing a database of almost 10.000 improvement actions, from 85 companies, covering the time frame 2010–2018. It discusses categories of actions, their impact and cost, as well as key characteristics of the companies. It proposes an objective criterion to identify “success” and “failure” in Lean implementation and tries to link these to operational results. It is probably the first time an analysis of this magnitude on the subject has been performed.

The proposed technique is on dual axis solar tracking system based on fuzzy control. In this proposed research solar panel will move along horizontal as well as along vertical axis according to sun’s daily movement and also follow its seasonal change in axis; motion of the panel will be determined by the fuzzy controller. The proposed technique is such that solar panel actually follows the motion of sun to get maximum power. Problem is the percentage of useful solar energy because it varies with time. Variation in it occurs because as we know sun keeps on moving so its incident radiation is not perpendicular to panel’s surface all along the day. It has been observed that efficiency of solar panel is about 23% -25%. Generally, PV panels are fixed along one direction due to which as the sun moves, the angle of incident insolation varies, decreasing the amount of useful solar radiation and hence could not provide maximum power, there is need of a technique which can be used to solve out this problem.

Głównym celem artykułu jest analiza pojęcia nieśmiertelności, wpisanie go w kontekst debaty bioetycznej poświęconej pojęciu udoskonalania człowieka i przedstawienie problemów wiążących się z tymi zagadnieniami. W tekście podejmuję próbę krótkiego omówienia kwestii udoskonalania człowieka w nawiązaniu do postępu technologicznego i zarysowanego przez Harrisa programu ewolucji udoskonalającej. Następnie staram się pokazać czym dla Harrisa jest nieśmiertelność, jakie jej typy wyróżnia, dlaczego warto się nią zajmować i w jaki sposób. Wreszcie przedstawiam główne zarzuty kierowane pod adresem nieśmiertelności i to, jak Harris się im przeciwstawia. Celem pobocznym, czy raczej postulatem, jest próba zaproponowania kierunku dalszych badań zarówno nad zagadnieniem nieśmiertelności jak i w dziedzinie udoskonalania człowieka.
The main goal of this article is to analyze the notion of immortality, to place it in the context of bioethical debate over the concept of human enhancement and to present problems related to these issues. In the text, I attempt to briefly discuss the question of human enhancement in reference to the technological progress and Harris's program of enhancing evolution. Afterwards I try to show what for Harris immortality is, what types of it he distinguishes, why is it worth dealing with and how. Finally, I present the main allegations against immortality and the way Harris opposes them. A side goal, or rather a postulate, is my attempt to propose a direction for further research both on the issue of immortality and in the field of human enhancement.

Image enhancement is becoming increasingly im portant with the advancement of space exploration techniques and the technological development of more durable and sci entifically sound observatories equipped with more powerful telescopes. The enhancement of images helps astronomers an alyze the results and act toward determining the dates of religious festivals. This work describes a technique known as contrast-limited adaptive histogram equalization (CLAHE) with grayscale contrast enhancement and bilateral filtering. We apply CLAHE on the L component of the CIE-Lab color space to adjust lightness contrast. Subsequently, grayscale contrast enhancement is performed to increase the visibility of the moon crescent. Noise caused by grayscale contrast en hancement is reduced using bilateral filtering. Two quantitative measures are selected (PSNR and MSE) to show the visual improvement achieved by the proposed algorithm.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the size of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) on dose enhancement in brachytherapy with photon emitting sources. Four photon emitting sources, 125I, 169Yb, 103Pd, and 192Ir were simulated and dose rate constant and radial dose functions were compared with published corresponding data for these sources. Dose enhancement factor in the presence of gold nanoparticles of 30 mg/ml concentration was calculated separately for nanoparticles with a diameter of 50, 100 and 200 nm. Gold nanoparticles were simulated precisely as nanospheres utilizing a lattice option in the MCNPX Monte Carlo code and the results were compared with those obtained with a simple model in which gold atoms are distributed uniformly in tumor volume as a simple mixture. Among the four mentioned sources, the dose enhancement related to 125I source is higher. Our results have shown that with gold nanoparticles of higher diameter, the level of dose enhancement is higher in the tested tumor. It has been also observed that the simple model overestimates the dose enhancement factor when compared with the precise model in which nanoparticles are defined according to the Monte Carlo code. In the energy range produced by the brachytherapy sources, the dose enhancement is higher when using brachytherapy sources with lower energy. Among the size range of gold nanoparticles used in medicine, it is predicted that nanoparticles with higher diameter can be more useful when are utilized in brachytherapy. It is also recommended that when calculating dose enhancements, a precise model be used for modelling of nanoparticles in the Monte Carlo simulations.

The presence of high Z material adjacent to soft tissue, when submitted to irradiation, enhances locally the absorbed dose in these soft tissues. Such an effect occurs due to the outscattering of photoelectrons from the high Z material. Polymer gel (PG) dosimeters were used to investigate this effect. Analytic calculations to estimate the dose enhancement were performed. Samples containing a polymer gel with 0.005 gAu/gPG and a pure polymer gel were irradiated using an X-ray beam produced by 150 kV, filtered with 4 mm Al and 5 mm Cu, which resulted in an approximately 20% greater absorbed dose in the samples with gold in comparison to those with the pure polymer gel. The analytic calculations resulted in a dose enhancement factor of approximately 30% for the gold concentration of 0.005 gAu/gPG.

The paper presents the results of sentence and logatome speech intelligibility measured in rooms with induction loop for hearing aid users. Two rooms with different acoustic parameters were chosen. Twenty two subjects with mild, moderate and severe hearing impairment using hearing aids took part in the experiment. The intelligibility tests composed of sentences or logatomes were presented to the subjects at fixed measurement points of an enclosure. It was shown that a sentence test is more useful tool for speech intelligibility measurements in a room than logatome test. It was also shown that induction loop is very efficient system at improving speech intelligibility. Additionally, the questionnaire data showed that induction loop, apart from improving speech intelligibility, increased a subject’s general satisfaction with speech perception.

Reverberation is a common problem for many speech technologies, such as automatic speech recogni- tion (ASR) systems. This paper investigates the novel combination of precedence, binaural and statistical independence cues for enhancing reverberant speech, prior to ASR, under these adverse acoustical con- ditions when two microphone signals are available. Results of the enhancement are evaluated in terms of relevant signal measures and accuracy for both English and Polish ASR tasks. These show inconsistencies between the signal and recognition measures, although in recognition the proposed method consistently outperforms all other combinations and the spectral-subtraction baseline.

This study analysed the theoretical foundations utilised by past empirical research in order to understand the pedagogical strategies used in schools for promoting positive behaviour. The analyses also include how pedagogical theories underpinned past research on positive behaviour enhancement. Samples for this study were academic papers obtained from four main databases: the Australian Education Index, British Education Index, ERIC (Educational Research Information Centre) and Scopus. By using a systematic review technique, a total number of 143 papers were found to be relevant for further analysis. Results revealed that four theoretical models dominate the studies examined, namely Applied Behavioural Analysis, Social Capital theory, Culturally Responsive Classroom Management, and Ecological Systems theory. This study recommends understanding of those theories is important in designing modules for positive behaviour enhancement in schools.

Zabiegi intensyfikacji wydobycia wpływają znacząco na własności fizyczne strefy przyodwiertowej, zwiększając przez to produktywność odwiertu. Efektywność takich zabiegów ocenić można przez analizę podstawowych parametrów eksploatacyjnych oraz porównanie zdolności produkcyjnej przed zabiegiem i po nim. W większości przypadków zabiegi te oceniane są jako pozytywne, jako że znacząco wpływają na wydobycie z odwiertów. Jednakże uwzględnienie czynnika ekonomicznego oraz czasu trwania efektu zwiększenia produktywności może zmienić te oceny. Wynika stąd konieczność gromadzenia i analizy dodatkowych danych eksploatacyjnych. W artykule dokonano przykładowych ocen efektywności zabiegów intensyfikacyjnych z uwzględnieniem wymienionych czynników oraz określono progi opłacalności ekonomicznej
Enhancement procedures significantly influence the physical properties of the near-hole zone, thus increasing its productivity. The efficiency of such procedures can be evaluated by analyzing basic exploitation parameters and comparing them with productivity before and after the enhancement. In a majority of cases, these procedures are assessed as positive, significantly improving the productivity of wells. However, the economic factor may change the final evaluation. Hence a conclusion that additional exploitation data should be gathered and analysed. Exemplary assessments of enhancement efficiency are presented. The above mentioned factors were accounted for and economic profitability established

This book consists of an introduction to the debate in both Polish and English and 12 chapters (papers). It also includes details about the contributors and an index. The papers are written by a dozen or so well-known experts on transhumanism, who come from renowned academic institutions and various research centers. The publication is not only interesting and inspiring, but also forces one to reflect on the nature of man, his essence and the impact of technology on his life, as well as the ethical evaluation of this impact.

This article analyses some of the most significant aspects of the exploratory adventure around the physiology of consciousness which the Polish writer Stanisław Lem provides in his science-fiction novels and essays. It is argued that the onto-epistemological and ethical problems associated with the complex mind-brain relationship, the sophisticated medical intervention devices that involve neuronal communication, and the challenges that humankind faces in view of the physical and intellectual evolutionary advance largely determine Lem’s perspective, which is shown to lie between fantastic inventiveness and plausible foresight.

We propose a high-quality infrared and visible image fusion method based on a deep wavelet-dense network (WT-DenseNet). The WT-DenseNet includes three network layers, the hybrid feature extraction layer, fusion layer, and image reconstruction layer. The hybrid feature extraction layer is composed of a wavelet and dense network. The wavelet network decomposes the feature map of the visible and infrared images into low-frequency and high-frequency components, respectively. The dense network extracts the salient features. A fusion layer is designed to integrate low-frequency and salient features. Finally, the fusion images are outputted by an image reconstruction layer. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can realize high-quality infrared and visible image fusions, and the performance of the proposed method is better than that of the six recently published fusion methods in terms of contrast and detail performance.

Opis:
Speech enhancement in strong noise condition is a challenging problem. Low-rank and sparse matrix decomposition (LSMD) theory has been applied to speech enhancement recently and good performance was obtained. Existing LSMD algorithms consider each frame as an individual observation. However, real-world speeches usually have a temporal structure, and their acoustic characteristics vary slowly as a function of time. In this paper, we propose a temporal continuity constrained low-rank sparse matrix decomposition (TCCLSMD) based speech enhancement method. In this method, speech separation is formulated as a TCCLSMD problem and temporal continuity constraints are imposed in the LSMD process. We develop an alternative optimisation algorithm for noisy spectrogram decomposition. By means of TCCLSMD, the recovery speech spectrogram is more consistent with the structure of the clean speech spectrogram, and it can lead to more stable and reasonable results than the existing LSMD algorithm. Experiments with various types of noises show the proposed algorithm can achieve a better performance than traditional speech enhancement algorithms, in terms of yielding less residual noise and lower speech distortion.

The prior language knowledge of learners for whom the target language is not the first foreign language poses a different starting learning situation that should merit pedagogical attention. The present paper seeks to contribute to the question of which pedagogical considerations can be made in regard to the role of prior language knowledge beyond instructed L2 grammar acquisition. Moreover, it fills a significant gap expanding the limited existing pedagogical options that instructors have at their disposal when it comes to teaching in classrooms where one foreign language is simultaneously chronologically first to some and second to others. Starting with (combinations of) existing theoretical accounts and associated pedagogical aspects (such as explicit information, negative evidence, metalinguistic explanations, grammar consciousness raising, and input enhancement), a recently developed method (Hahn & Angelovska, 2017) is discussed. The method acknowledges equally the three phases of input, practice and output and is applicable in instructed L2 grammar acquisition and beyond.

Rosnące zapotrzebowanie na surowce energetyczne, a w szczególności na ropę naftową oraz wiążący się z tym wzrost cen paliw na światowym rynku wymusza na firmach eksploatacyjnych poszukiwania nowych rozwiązań. Jednym z nich jest konieczność wzmożenia intensyfikacji wydobycia surowców z istniejących już starych odwiertów. Niestety, często z uwagi na zły stan konstrukcji lub spadek wydobycia otwory takie wymagają prac rekonstrukcyjnych. Ponieważ prace rekonstrukcyjne są pracami o podwyższonym ryzyku (obecność medium pod ciśnieniem, duże zużycie elementów wyposażenia zarówno napowierzchniowego jak i wgłębnego), niezbędna jest znajomość najnowszych rozwiązań technicznych stosowanych do rekonstrukcji lub powierzenie tych prac wyspecjalizowanym firmom. W artykule autorzy analizują siły, jakie działają podczas prac z użyciem elastycznego przewodu - coiled tubingu.
The growing demand for energy minerals, especially oil, and the resulting growth of world's fuel prices induces on prospecting companies elaboration of new solutions. One of them is the necessity of intensifying raw minerals in the existing wells. Unfortunately, owing to the bad technical condition of the well or drop of production, the wells need reconstruction works. The reconstruction works are high-risk operations (presence of pressurized medium, high wear of the surface and downhole equipment), therefore it is vital to know the newest reconstruction solutions or to ordering them at specialized companies. The forces acting during works with a coiled tubing are analyzed in the paper.

The aim of this study is the evaluation of electron dose enhancement and photon contamination production by various nanoparticles in the electron mode of a medical linac. MCNPX Monte Carlo code was used for simulation of Siemens Primus linac as well as a phantom and a tumor loaded with nanoparticles. Electron dose enhancement by Au, Ag, I and Fe2O3 nanoparticles of 7, 18 and 30 mg/ml concentrations for 8, 12 and 14 MeV electrons was calculated. The increase in photon contamination due to the presence of the nanoparticles was evaluated as well. The above effects were evaluated for 500 keV and 10 keV energy cut-offs defined for electrons and photons. For 500 keV energy cut-off, there was no significant electron dose enhancement. However, for 10 keV energy cut-off, a maximum electron dose enhancement factor of 1.08 was observed for 30 mg/ml of gold nanoparticles with 8 MeV electrons. An increase in photon contamination due to nanoparticles was also observed which existed mainly inside the tumor. A maximum photon dose increase factor of 1.07 was observed inside the tumor with Au nanoparticles. Nanoparticles can be used for the enhancement of electron dose in the electron mode of a linac. Lower energy electron beams, and nanoparticles with higher atomic number, can be of greater benefi t in this field. Photons originating from nanoparticles will increase the photon dose inside the tumor, and will be an additional advantage of the use of nanoparticles in radiotherapy with electron beams.

Experimental and Numerical studies were carried out on turbulent heat transfer and friction factor loss through a triangular chevron channel. For uniform wall heat flux equal 1350 (W/m²) using air as a working fluid. Reynolds number varied from 3000 to 10000, phase shifted at the range of 0≤ϕ≤180, with variation distance between chevron surfaces (5 ≤ D ≤ 35 mm). Nu increased and TEF decreased in increasing of Re. The TEF and Nu increased with closing to channel phase shift angle 90˚, the best performance was noticed on phase shift, ϕ=90º. At the end of this paper effect of distance between chevron surfaces presented, The TEF and Nu increased with decreasing to channel distance and the best performance was noticed on closing to D=5(mm).

Opis:
Algorithms for examination of the density and selected parameters of movement of sperm cells have been elaborated and implemented. The conducted research is a part of work on a computer system for semen analysis. The system will allow for an increase in the precision of examination thanks to an exact specification of numerical values of the chosen parameters. An additional advantage of the system is an increased time efficiency of examination. Nowadays, the basic type of examination is an estimated analysis of semen parameters by visual observation of a sample, based on a physician's subjective assessment of an image. Registration of images is impossible in visual analysis.

Underwater acoustic images are acquired using sonar instrument that uses sound propagation to navigate and map the sea floor. The sonar devices are effectively used to create images of large area of the seabed. However, the visual perception of the object in the acoustic image depends on refraction, which is a function of changes in the speed of sound in successive layers of water. And refraction depends mainly on temperature, slightly on salinity and hydrostatic pressure. The quality and resolution of sonar imaging of the bottom depends on many other factors such as pitch, yaw and heave of the side scan sonar, the presence of volume scatterers in the water body, the distance of the sonar from the bottom and orientation of the object. Generally, the objects in an acoustic image would be of small size compared to their normal size as the distance between the sonar and object is larger. To detect and recognize the objects in the images, the resolution should be enhanced. In this paper, we propose an efficient edge preserving interpolation method for underwater acoustic image resolution enhancement which preserves the edge sharpness. The method handles the diagonal pixels in the first pass, in turn fills the horizontal and vertical pixels in the second pass. The results obtained are compared with the state-of-the-art interpolation techniques and the performance measures such as Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) and Structural Similarity Index Measurement (SSIM) shows an improved result.

The effect of the linewidth enhancement factor (LEF) or α-factor on two common routes to chaos (mainly period-doubling and quasi-periodic routes) in optically injected semiconductor laser is theoretically investigated using bifurcation diagrams. The value of the LEF is slightly modified to examine the sensitivity of routes to chaos to any variation in the LEF. Despite the fact that LEF enhances chaos in the system, both routes are found to be highly insensitive to the variation in the LEF.

Speaker‘s emotional states are recognized from speech signal with Additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). The influence of white noise on a typical emotion recogniztion system is studied. The emotion classifier is implemented with Gaussian mixture model (GMM). A Chinese speech emotion database is used for training and testing, which includes nine emotion classes (e.g. happiness, sadness, anger, surprise, fear, anxiety, hesitation, confidence and neutral state). Two speech enhancement algorithms are introduced for improved emotion classification. In the experiments, the Gaussian mixture model is trained on the clean speech data, while tested under AWGN with various signal to noise ratios (SNRs). The emotion class model and the dimension space model are both adopted for the evaluation of the emotion recognition system. Regarding the emotion class model, the nine emotion classes are classified. Considering the dimension space model, the arousal dimension and the valence dimension are classified into positive regions or negative regions. The experimental results show that the speech enhancement algorithms constantly improve the performance of our emotion recognition system under various SNRs, and the positive emotions are more likely to be miss-classified as negative emotions under white noise environment.

Helping behavior can be triggered by complex motivators, a number of them self-related. Investigation of this issue can foster a better understanding of such current social phenomena as volunteerism within the context of intensive migration in Europe. The research presented here focuses on individuals who applied for volunteer positions in the Registration and Reception Centers for Refugees in Bulgaria. Document analysis was conducted concerning 128 applications for participation in an ongoing volunteer project during the period 2013-2016. The explicit motivations of candidates indicate that groups of motives related to self-enhancement are among the key triggers for volunteers. These include a desire to foster social change and the effort to develop a positive self-image, both of which are associated with the role of volunteer.

This paper proposes an enhancement approach to improve the accuracy of global Digital Elevation Models (GDEMs) in Egypt. The proposed approach is an empirical one that depends on subtracting the heights error from the original DEM. The research includes the evaluation and enhancement of SRTM-1 (SRTM v4.1), ASTER GDEM v2, and AW3D30 v2 GDEMs, in Egypt, using 980 well distributed GPS/levelling points, that cover the entire country. The GPS/levelling points are divided into 500 control and 390 check points. The results show that the root mean square error (RMSE) in the SRTM, ASTER and AW3D30 are 3.99 m, 8.81 m, and 2.98 m respectively. For enhancing purposes, two different approaches are used: a linear regression analysis approach, and the proposed empirical surface subtraction approach. The results of the linear regression analysis approach show that the accuracies are improved by 3%, 16%, and 3% for SRTM, ASTER and AW3D30 respectively. However, the accuracies are improved by 5%, 23%, and 16% for SRTM, ASTER and AW3D30 respectively when the proposed approach is followed. After using the proposed approach, the obtained accuracy of the enhanced DEM reached 2.5 m.

The paper describes applications of the vibration-assisted laser surface texturing and spark erosion process as methods of modifying properties and structures of metal surfaces. Practical aspects of the use of produced surfaces in the heat exchanger with a minichannel have been described. Compared with smooth surfaces, developed metal surfaces obtained by vibration-assisted laser surface texturing and electromachining show more effective heat transfer. The local heat transfer coefficient for the saturated boiling region obtained for developed surfaces had the values significantly higher than those obtained for the smooth plate at the same heat flux. The experimental results are presented as the heated plate temperature (obtained from infrared thermography) and relationships between the heat transfer coefficient and the distance along the length of the minichannel for the saturated boiling region.

In this paper, the performances of a wavelength interrogation-based optical fiber surface plasmon resonance sensor for hemoglobin (Hb) concentration is investigated by theoretical simulation. The proposed configuration incorporates optical fiber, 70 nm silver, 18 nm barium titanate (BaTiO3), and 2 nm zinc oxide. Simulation results show the sensor exhibits refractive index sensitivity of 4023 nm/RIU and concentration sensitivity of 10.0873 nm/(g∙dL), along with Hb concentration varying from 0 to 14 g/dL. This paper especially focuses on the influence of BaTiO3 on the performances of the proposed sensor with light wavelength ranging from 350 to 1000 nm. Comparison analysis indicates sandwiching 18 nm BaTiO3 between sensing layers not only enhances the concentration sensitivity by 30.14% but also decreases the nonlinear error of the sensor from 0.68% to 0.63%. For a wavelength accuracy of 0.1 nm, the proposed sensor can provide a resolution of 0.0099 g/dL for Hb concentration detection.

This paper seeks to determine the role of farmland afforestation in the development of rural areas in Poland. An analysis covered the distribution of afforestation conducted in the years 2003-2013 in terms of afforestations needs of rural communes. The assessment relied on the ranking of communes worked out by the Forest Research Institute for the purposes of the National Woodiness Enhancement Programme (NWEP). It was found that, in spite of the NWEP, farmland afforestation did not proceed in a spatially ordered way. The research showed that there is no straightforward relation between the level of afforestation needs of rural communes and spatial differences in farmland afforestation.
Celem artykułu jest określenie roli zalesień gruntów rolnych w rozwoju obszarów wiejskich w Polsce. Przeanalizowano rozmieszczenie zalesień wykonanych w latach 2003-2013 pod kątem potrzeb zalesieniowych gmin wiejskich. Oceny dokonano uwzględniając ranking gmin opracowany w IBL na potrzeby Krajowego Programu Zwiększania Lesistości. Wykazano, że mimo istnienia KPZL zalesianie gruntów rolnych nie odbywa się w sposób przestrzennie uporządkowany. Badania uwidoczniły brak jednoznacznego związku między poziomem preferencji zalesieniowych gmin wiejskich a zróżnicowaniem przestrzennym zalesień.

A three-dimensional electromagnetic crystal is employed as a directivity-enhancing superstrate for planar antennas. The crystal is a woodpile made of alumina rods. In a shielded anechoic chamber, the performance of a patch antenna covered with the woodpile is measured. The superstrate is positioned at different distances from the antenna and its orientation is varied in the 8–12 GHz frequency range. The return loss, gain and radiation pattern in the E- and H-planes are measured. The electromagnetic behavior of Fabry-Perot cavities with woodpile mirrors, equivalent to the compound radiator, is also studied. The main effect of the crystal on the antenna performance is an enhancement of about 10 dB in maximum gain. A rather complete series of experiments is presented, highlighting the role of the periodic structure in the directivity enhancement and allowing a deeper understanding of the electromagnetic phenomena involved in EBG resonator antennas. Benefits and disadvantages of this kind of antennas are discussed and ideas for future research are given.

In this study, fully developed laminar flow and heat transfer in an internally longitudinally finned tube are investigated through application of the meshless method. The flow is assumed to be both hydrodynamically and thermally developed, with a uniform outside-the-wall temperature. The governing equations have been solved numerically by means of the method of fundamental solutions in combination with the method of particular solutions to obtain the velocity and temperature distributions. The advantage of the proposed approach is that it does not require mesh generation on the considered domain or its boundary, but uses only a cloud of arbitrarily located nodes. The results, comprising the friction factor as well as the Nusselt number, are presented for varied length values and fin numbers, as well as the thermal conductivity ratio between the tube and the flowing fluid. The results show that the heat transfer improves significantly if more fins are used.

We examined the influence of identity fusion and status of evaluator on willingness to fight for one’s group after group-descriptive or not group-descriptive feedback. The valence of evaluative information was varied as well: feedback either support negative group-stereotype (negative but descriptive condition) or contradict negative group-stereotype (positive but not descriptive condition). In two studies (N=208 & N=119) we partially replicated previous findings on self-verification. Individuals fused with one’s group were more prone than non fused to fight for group members after receiving, challenging, not group-describing feedback, but only when evaluator’s status was high. When the evaluator’ status was low, fused participants (vs. non fused) engaged in self-enhancement strategies: that is they endorse radical behavior after negative, even if group-describing, feedback. We discuss the importance of identity fusion and evaluator’s status for determining when self-enhancement and self-verification will and will not be evoke.

Opis:
In this paper a new method for the reduction of multiplicative noise in digital images is described. The proposed algorithm is a modification of the Mean-Shift (MS) filter which is based on the concept of the Non-Local Means (NLM) denoising. The proposed algorithm does not focus on single pixels only, as in the case of the mean-shift technique, but also on their neighborhoods. The performance of the novel approach is experimentally verified and the obtained results prove that the new design is superior both to the MS and NLM techniques.

Opis:
An important element of Internet of Things systems (IoT) is wireless data transmission. Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) and LTE Cat M1 (LTE-M) are the new standards for such transmission intended for LTE cellular networks. Cellular network operators has recently launched such transmission. The article presents the results of measurements of NB-IoT transmission parameters in this network, inside the building and in open urban areas. The main features of the NB-IoT system and measuring equipment are briefly discussed.

There are always new proposals concerning the application of new genetic technology. Some of them concern the genetic enhancement of man. There are four groups of such proposals, labeled as: better children, better performance, ageless bodies, and happy souls. The Magisterium of the Roman Catholic Church, which distinguishes between therapeutic and non-therapeutic genetic manipulation, does not reject non-therapeutic genetic manipulation (genetic enhancement is such manipulation), but it does prescribe some requirements for its moral acceptance. However, these requirements are general and not very useful for determining specific moral limits for genetic enhancement of man. There are neither ready standards nor criteria for establishing those limits. The role of philosophers (theologians) then, is to ascertain those limits. It is possible to do that on the basis of virtue ethics in its version elaborated by St. Thomas Aquinas. His description of human perfection is of great help in establishing the morally acceptable limits of the genetic enhancement of man. Aquinas’s intuitions are confirmed by the observations of contemporary psychology.

Textual manipulation is a common pedagogic tool used to emphasize specific features of a second language (L2) text, thereby facilitating noticing and, ideally, second language development. Visual input enhancement has been used to investigate the effects of highlighting specific grammatical structures in a text. The current study uses a quasi-experimental design to determine the extent to which textual manipulation increase (a) learners’ perception of targeted forms and (b) their knowledge of the forms. Input enhancement was used to highlight the Spanish preterit and imperfect verb forms and an eye tracker measured the frequency and duration of participants’ fixation on the targeted items. In addition, pretests and posttests of the Spanish past tense provided information about participants’ knowledge of the targeted forms. Results indicate that learners were aware of the highlighted grammatical forms in the text; however, there was no difference in the amount of attention between the enhanced and unenhanced groups. In addition, both groups improved in their knowledge of the L2 forms; however, again, there was no differential improvement between the two groups.

In the paper, the authors present the results of seismic reservoir characterization of shale gas deposits of the Lower Silurian and Ordovician (Sasino Formation and Jantar Formation), which are localized within the onshore part of the Baltic Basin, N Poland. For this purpose, acoustic inversion of seismic data and petrophysical analysis of well-log data were incorporated. The new approach that the authors used for acoustic inversion was the resolution enhancement algorithm, known as spectral blueing, before proceeding with the acoustic inversion process. The spectral blueing procedure enhances the seismic spectrum by weighting it with the well reflectivity spectrum. The resulting enhanced seismic volume manifests itself in higher energies of the high frequency component, while keeping the frequency range constant. With the results of acoustic inversion after the spectral blueing procedure, the authors were able to define two more potential exploration sites within the Ordovician deposits.

W artykule zostały opisane i porównane metody podwyższania rozdzielczości obrazów cyfrowych. Przedstawiono klasyfikację tych metod oraz implementacje wybranych algorytmów. Zasadniczą część artykułu stanowi przedstawienie dwóch hybrydowych autorskich metod interpolacji. Zaproponowane metody, w celu poprawy jakości interpolowanego obrazu (w szczególności jego ostrości), wykorzystują informacje o krawędziach wykrytych na obrazie oryginalnym. Artykuł opisuje, w jaki sposób są wykrywane i wykorzystywane krawędzie do poprawy jakości obrazu w większej rozdzielczości.
This paper presents results of our research aiming at obtaining new methods for increasing resolution of digital images, giving better visual results. Classification of these methods and implementation of some algorithms is also shortly presented here. The main part of the paper presents two proposes a simple but efficient method for increasing resolution of digital images using edge-based approach.

The epistemological consequences of the increasing popularity of artificial cognitive enhancements are still confined to the margins of philosophical exploration, with priority given instead to ethical problems requiring urgent practical solutions. In this paper, I examine the less popular, yet still important, problem of the threats to which the very knowledge-forming process is exposed when its subject uses artificial cognitive enhancers. The theory of knowledge I call upon is borrowed from virtue epistemologists who, together with proponents of active externalism, seek to define the conditions that will protect artificially enhanced agents from a loss of epistemic agency. I invoke three such conditions (authenticity, integration and reciprocal causation), rejecting the last one. Incorporating active externalism into virtue epistemology points to the possibility of treating extended systems, composed of humans and artifacts, as extended subjects of knowledge. In the final part, however, I present two arguments against such an extension of epistemic agency.

In this paper, we present a simple near-field probe model that is composed of an elongated ellipsoid and a finite metal truncated cone. The elongated ellipsoid has been shown to act as a protrusion or separate particle near a truncated cone apex with strong near-field enhancement under laser excitation. By controllably varying the length of the ellipsoid protrusion from the truncated cone, the truncated cone-ellipsoid probes can be adapted to the suitability of near-field probes. The effects of substrate material and excitation wavelength on the near field enhancement for different tip apexes are also discussed. In addition, we compared the properties of the truncated cone-ellipsoid probe with the widely used hemisphere conical tip by launching surface plasmon polaritons on plasmonic waveguides to prove the suitability of the truncated cone-ellipsoid probes as high performance near-field probes. The present simple model would provide a theoretical basis for the actual construction of probes.

In this experimental investigation, the critical heat flux (CHF) of aqua-based multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) nanofluids at three different volumetric concentrations 0.2%, 0.6%, and 0.8% were prepared, and the test results were compared with deionized water. Different characterization techniques, including X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared, were used to estimate the size, surface morphology, agglomeration size and chemical nature of MWCNT. The thermal conductivity and viscosity of the MWCNT at three different volumetric concentrations was measured at a different temperature, and results were compared with deionized water. Although, MWCNT-deionized water nanofluid showed superior performance in heat transfer coefficient as compared to the base fluid. However, the results proved that the critical heat flux is increased with an increase in concentrations of nanofluids.

The experiments were performed using a unique self-made Nd:YAG laser operating in the Q-switching regime, where the laser transmission losses are switched. Such a laser allowed for an easy and quick change of the operating mode (one and two pulses), free shaping of the energy ratio of the two pulses (division of the energy of a single pulse into two parts) and a smooth change of the delay time between pulses in the range from 200 ns to 10 μs. To our knowledge, such a laser was used in LIBS measurements for the first time. LIBS experiments revealed strong self-absorption depending on energy ratios carried out in the first and second laser pulse in the double-pulse mode. This was confirmed also by statistical factorial analysis of LIBS spectra. Plasma temperature and LIBS signal enhancement were measured both for energy proportions between the first and the second laser pulse and for the first-to-second-pulse delay.

This paper systematically investigated the effects of normalizing, annealing and water-quenching heat treatments on corrosion of samples of the steel types in 0.5M H2SO4 containing 3.5%-Wt sodium chloride at ambient temperature. Non-heat-treated (control) and heat-treated samples of low and medium carbon steel with respective carbon contents of 0.207% C and 0.46% C were produced, cleaned, weighted and immersed in pairs in the chloride medium for various durations of 72, 96 and 168 hours. Thereupon, the samples were removed, re-cleaned, dried, and re-weighed. The respective average pair weight losses were evaluated and used to determine the corrosion penetration rates of the samples in the medium. Analysis of the entire obtained rates data showed that corrosion of the samples tended to increasingly passivate with the exposure time in all cases. The low carbon steel samples generally showed much less resistance to corrosion in the medium, compared to the medium carbon steel. The experiment demonstrated that the control, annealed, normalized, and quenched low carbon steel samples comparably resisted corrosion in the medium. Furthermore, the quenched medium carbon steel samples exhibited much better corrosion resistance than their annealed and the annealed better than their normalized. Correlative micro-structural analysis of the control, normalized, annealed, and quenched steel types with the worst-case corrosion showed no appreciable changes in the case of low carbon steel samples, but various levels of reduction and re-orientations in grain sizes and inter-granular boundaries of the carbide, ferrite, pearlite, and martensite in the matrix structures of the medium carbon steel samples, compared to the corroded control samples of the steel types.

Speech enhancement is one of the many challenging tasks in signal processing, especially in the case of nonstationary speech-like noise. In this paper a new incoherent discriminative dictionary learning algorithm is proposed to model both speech and noise, where the cost function accounts for both “source confusion” and “source distortion” errors, with a regularization term that penalizes the coherence between speech and noise sub-dictionaries. At the enhancement stage, we use sparse coding on the learnt dictionary to find an estimate for both clean speech and noise amplitude spectrum. In the final phase, the Wiener filter is used to refine the clean speech estimate. Experiments on the Noizeus dataset, using two objective speech enhancement measures: frequency-weighted segmental SNR and Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality (PESQ) demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms other speech enhancement methods tested.

In this paper, a small (20 × 20 × 2.4 mm) loaded microstrip patch antenna (MPA) with an asymmetric artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) as a ground plane is designed for millimeter wave applications. Two AMC structures are proposed; one has the property of a 0 ◦ reflection phase around 28.4 GHz, with a symmetric geometry, which makes the reflection phase insensitive to variations in both polarization and incident angle. This symmetric AMC structure ensures angular stability which is considered as a major requirement when periodic structures are used as antenna ground planes. The other structure is characterized by an asymmetric geometry and shows an interesting behavior around 28.6 GHz, where a discontinuity in the reflection phase appeared due to the fact that surface impedance nature changed from purely capacitive to purely inductive. This paper studies the effects of the two proposed AMC structures on the performance of MPAs, by using an array of 8 × 8 unit cell elements as an artificial ground plane. Simulation results show that an MPA with a symmetric AMC ground plane offers better impedance matching and a wider bandwidth. Compared with conventional MPAs, gain is enhanced and directivity is improved as well. As far as an MPA with an asymmetric AMC ground plane is concerned, its performance in terms of gain and directivity is higher than that of the conventional solution.

The paper deals with the development of high-performance composite heat exchangers made of different metals. The samples made of meshes and fine fibers have been sintered to the copper base in the reduction atmosphere to prevent oxidation. The test of boiling heat transfer performance have been carried out under ambient pressure with distilled water and ethyl alcohol as working agents. The obtained data indicates significant enhancement of heat flux of such composite heat exchangers in comparison to the smooth surface without any coating. The maximum heat flux for the microstructure covered heater has been several times higher than for the smooth surface. The enhancement has been observed to decrease as the temperature difference become higher.
Artykuł dotyczy badań wysokowydajnych, kompozytowych wymienników ciepła wykonanych z różnych metali. Próbki wykonano poprzez spiekanie w atmosferze redukcyjnej (w celu uniknięcia utlenienia) warstw siatkowych i drobnych włókien metalu z podstawą miedzianą. Badania przeprowadzono pod ciśnieniem atmosferycznym dla dwóch cieczy roboczych tj. wody destylowanej i bezwodnego alkoholu etylowego. Uzyskane wyniki wskazują na znaczące możliwości zwiększenia wymienianych gęstości strumienia ciepła dla wymienników kompozytowych w porównaniu do powierzchni gładkiej bez pokrycia. Maksymalne wartości gęstości strumienia ciepła odbieranego z powierzchni z mikropokryciem nawet kilkakrotnie przewyższały te, odbierane z powierzchni gładkiej. Intensyfikacja wrzenia zmniejszała się jednak w miarę wzrostu przegrzania.

The main assumption of given study was to develop tablets containing amorphous ibuprofen by hot melt extrusion process. However proposed manufacturing procedure demonstrates quite a few differences in comparison to a conventional hot melt extrusion. Accurately the given manufacturing procedure has been called a hot melt impregnation due to the process characteristics. As a product of described process a fine free flowing extrudate is obtained. Four different compositions have been proposed. Materials prepared by hot melt impregnation technique have been extensively examined in terms of physicochemical properties and then were subjected to tablet compression process. Obtained tablets were examined in terms of thermodynamic stability and compared to marketed product containing ibuprofen.

This work presents the methods of improvement of biometric images contrast, and it corresponds to one of the main parts of the biometric system that verify identities based on distribution of the blood vessels in a hand. The acquisition of the palm blood vessel pattern causes noises that can prevent the right verification. To solve this problem, we investigate four different methods of contrast enhancement, and provide an evaluation of their performance by using four different quantitative contrast measurement methods.

This paper presents the analysis of momentum, angular momentum and heat transfer during unsteady natural convection in micropolar nanofluids. Selected nanofluids treated as single phase fluids contain small particles with diameter size 10-38.4 nm. In particular three water-based nanofluids were analyzed. Volume fraction of these solutions was 6%. The first of the analyzed nanofluids contained TiO2 nanoparticles, the second one contained Al2O3 nanoparticles, and the third one the Cu nanoparticles.

Nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) is one of the most popular machine learning tools for speech enhancement (SE). However, there are two problems reducing the performance of the traditional NMF-based SE algorithms. One is related to the overlap-and-add operation used in the short time Fourier transform (STFT) based signal reconstruction, and the other is the Euclidean distance used commonly as an objective function; these methods can cause distortion in the SE process. In order to get over these shortcomings, we propose a novel SE joint framework which combines the discrete wavelet packet transform (DWPT) and the Itakura-Saito nonnegative matrix factorisation (ISNMF). In this approach, the speech signal was first split into a series of subband signals using the DWPT. Then, the ISNMF was used to enhance the speech for each subband signal. Finally, the inverse DWPT (IDWT) was utilised to reconstruct these enhanced speech subband signals. The experimental results show that the proposed joint framework effectively enhances the performance of speech enhancement and performs better in the unseen noise case compared to the traditional NMF methods.

This study discriminates different lithological units of the Dokan Area, Kurdistan Region, NE-Iraq, using rapid-eye satellite data by image enhancement techniques, namely the false colour composite (FCC), optimum index factor (OIF), minimum noise fraction (MNF), principal component analysis (PCA) and band ratio (BR). Results of analyses show that the FCC (R: 5; G: 4: B: 1); MNF (R: 2, G: 3, B: 5); PCA (R: 5, G: 2, B: 1), and band ratio (R: 5/4, G: 2/1, B: 5/3) are the best to different geological formations. The results are confirmed in the field support with the geological maps available for the area. Geological formations appeared as a result of the collision process between the Arabian plate and the Iranian plate. In general, the study area is mountainous, which is usually represented by anticline folds with the main NW - SE trend in the study area, with very a rugged relief mainly due to the continuous collision between the Arabian plate and Iranian plate. The digital image processing of satellite data has demonstrated the sensor’s capability and efficiency of the image processing methods in identifying and mapping geological units in the study area.

Osiągnięcia nauk biomedycznych pozwalają obecnie ingerować w naturę ludzką w stopniu, w jakim wcześniej nie było to możliwe. Zwolennicy takich działań, zwłaszcza transhumaniści, starają się przekonywać, że kierunek ingerencji wyznaczony przez postęp technologiczny jest nieuchronny, a wszelkie wątpliwości związane z biomedycznym doskonaleniem człowieka okazują się pozbawione wystarczających racji. Celem artykułu jest próba rozważenia, czy realizacja zgłaszanego przez transhumanistów postulatu przekształcenia człowieka w postczłowieka stanowiłaby akt depersonalizacji. Przeprowadzone analizy pokazują, że można tu mówić o depersonalizacji w dwojakim sensie: o próbie zanegowania właściwego i pełnowartościowego odniesienia do osoby (a więc o deprecjonowaniu miłości bezwarunkowej) oraz o instrumentalizacji ludzkiego życia.
Achievements of biomedical science allow us to interfere with human nature to a larger extent than ever before. Supporters of such activities, especially transhumanists, hold that technological progress determines an inevitable direction of such interference and all doubts related to biomedical improvement of the human being lack sufficient grounds. The article considers whether the transhumanist demand for a transformation of the human being into the ‘post-human’ being involves depersonalisation. The conducted analyses show that in the case of transhumanism we would be dealing with twofold depersonalisation of the human being: firstly, the transhumanist postulates jeopardize the attitude of unconditional love, which is the only proper attitude towards the human person, and, secondly, they objectify human life, which as such is unobjectifiable.

Aim. It has been acknowledged by research that self-directedness proves to be fundamental in learning processes. Despite the fact that self-directedness is vital in the perspective of lifelong learning, there is an insufficient amount of known research that focuses on enhancing self-directedness in the studies of English for Specific Purposes (ESP). In order to expand the body of knowledge in this field, the aim of this work is to establish the types of tasks used in ESP study books which contribute to learners’ self-directedness. Methods. The study employs the methods of relevant literature analysis and comparative analysis of three ESP study books published by Oxford University Press, Pearson Education Limited and Macmillan, which are designed for the intermediate and upper-intermediate students of Business English. Results and conclusion. The comparison shows that the analysed ESP study books contribute to the enhancement of self-directedness through a communicative type of tasks (reading, vocabulary building, speaking, listening activities), which correlates with the categories of Remembering, Understanding, Applying, Analysing, Evaluating, and Creating of Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy by Lorin Anderson and David Krathwohl (2001). Thus, the findings allow to conclude that reading, vocabulary building, speaking, and listening tasks provided in the three ESP study books are designed to develop not only learners’ linguistic competences, but also their self-directedness. Cognitive value. Understanding the types of tasks that encourage learners to transition from low-order thinking skills to high-order thinking skills, which enables them to self-direct their learning, may be of fundamental importance in the studies of English for Specific Purposes.

Speech enhancement is fundamental for various real time speech applications and it is a challenging task in the case of a single channel because practically only one data channel is available. We have proposed a supervised single channel speech enhancement algorithm in this paper based on a deep neural network (DNN) and less aggressive Wiener filtering as additional DNN layer. During the training stage the network learns and predicts the magnitude spectrums of the clean and noise signals from input noisy speech acoustic features. Relative spectral transform-perceptual linear prediction (RASTA-PLP) is used in the proposed method to extract the acoustic features at the frame level. Autoregressive moving average (ARMA) filter is applied to smooth the temporal curves of extracted features. The trained network predicts the coefficients to construct a ratio mask based on mean square error (MSE) objective cost function. The less aggressive Wiener filter is placed as an additional layer on the top of a DNN to produce an enhanced magnitude spectrum. Finally, the noisy speech phase is used to reconstruct the enhanced speech. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed DNN framework with less aggressive Wiener filtering outperforms the competing speech enhancement methods in terms of the speech quality and intelligibility.

The normal mode solution for the form function and target strength (TS) of a solid-filled spherical shell is derived. The calculation results of the spherical shell’s acoustic TS are in good agreement with the results of the finite element method (FEM). Based on these normal mode solutions, the influences of parameters such as the material, radius, and thickness of the inner and outer shells on the TS of a solid-filled spherical shell are analyzed. An underwater spherical shell scatterer is designed, which uses room temperature vulcanized (RTV) silicone rubber as a solid filling material and does not contain a suspension structure inside. The scatterer has a good TS enhancement effect.

Contemporary transformation and disintegration of man is manifested in many ways. One of the most compelling is transhumanism understood as a philosophy (ideology) based on a conviction that man can be enhanced using technological means. It is the modem progress of science and technology, particularly biotechnology, that for transhumanists makes the pursuit for human enhancement necessary. Thus, human beings are perceived as a transitional species in human history leading to the posthuman future when posthumans will become resistant to disease, to aging etc. From the Christian theological perspective transhumanism is criticized as a project entirely secular, promising a happy life and "ageless bodies” on earth. Not fewer criticisms come from the ethical perspective. In the posthuman world ethics seems to be entirely relativized and even disintegrated due to its subordination to utilitarianism and eugenic purposes. What is particularly troubling is the idea that "the genetically enhanced will take advantage of the unenhanced”. The whole transhumanist ideology is the concept in which the giftedness of human life is fundamentally denied and man aspires to be self-sufficient and in control of his future. Transcendence is entirely rejected and replaced by biotechnological future.

W pracy poruszono zagadnienie oceny kontrastu achromatycznych obrazów cyfrowych. Przedstawiono porównanie wyników oceny kontrastu obrazów przy wykorzystaniu, zarówno znanych z literatury jak i nowych, miar kontrastu. Zaproponowane nowe miary bazują na lokalnej realizacji pewnych znanych z literatury globalnych miar kontrastu. Badania przeprowadzono dla kilkudziesięciu obrazów testowych. Przedstawiono także problemy związane z doborem miar kontrastu do danego zastosowania.
The paper deals with the problem of gray level image contrast evaluation. Comparison of several, both known from the literature and new, image contras evaluation methods are presented. Methods taken into consideration are: (1) and (2)-two methods based on Weber-Fechner law, (3) and (4)-variance based methods, method (5) with its modifications-based on difference between gray-level values of neighboring pixels, (6)-image energy based method, (7)- method based on Shannon entropy information theory, (8)-(11)-group of new methods based on the idea of aggregating of local contrast evaluation value obtained for neighborhood of pixel for all pixels in image. The comparison was performed on the set of 48 test images obtained as a result of contrast enhancement of 8 images (Fig. 1) using 5 contrast enhancement methods. The results of contrast evaluation of all images are given in Table 1. In order to compare the numerical contrast evaluation with visual judgment, two subsets of test images are presented (Figs. 2 and 3) together with charts of the contrast values (Fig. 4). The obtained results are analysed in Section 4, where on the example of two different applications of contrast enhancement the difficulties with contrast evaluation and selection of the best contrast evaluation method are discussed. It is not possible to choose the best contrast evaluation method basing on the obtained results and taking into consideration different purposes of image contrast enhancement. Because of this, a contrast evaluation method should be chosen for each application individually.

Praca dotyczy zagadnienia oceny kontrastu achromatycznych obrazów cyfrowych. Przedstawiono i porównano znane z literatury metody oceny kontrastu obrazów, a także zaproponowano nowe rozwiązania bazujące na określeniu różnic poziomów szarości sąsiadujących ze sobą pikseli. Ocena przydatności poszczególnych metod została dokonana na przykładzie zadania wyboru najlepszej wersji obrazu pod kątem jego dalszej analizy. Przeprowadzona analiza wyników oceny kontrastu obrazów wskazuje, że dla przyjętych warunków porównania najlepszą metodą oceny kontrastu jest jedna z nowych metod.
This paper deals with the gray-level image contrast evaluation problem. In the paper some methods of contrast evaluation are considered, namely: (1) and (2) - two methods based on Weber-Fechner law ((2) is a Michelson contrast), next two methods (3) and (4) are based on variance of gray-level values in the image, and the last two (5) and (6) are new methods in which the difference between gray-level values of neighbouring pixels is used for calculating the image contrast ratio. The evaluation of the described methods has been made for one of the standard usage cases of the contrast evaluation method, i.e. evaluation of images after contrast enhancement for choosing the best of them for its visual analysis. The investigations have been performed on the example of aerial image AERIAL (Fig. 1). The contrast enhancement of this image gives the set of test images (a)-(j) (Fig. 1). Table 1 presents the contrast enhancement methods and their parameters used for obtaining test images. The contrasts evaluation values of the test images obtained by use of the methods (1)-(6) are given in Table 2. Table 3 shows the ranking of the images (a)-(j) obtained by sorting in descending order the contrast ratio of test images independently for each evaluation method. It is difficult to indicate the best evaluation method but it seems that, basing on the comparison, the new method (5) is the best image contrast evaluation method

W pracy zaprezentowano algorytm umożliwiający pseudokolorowanie obrazów szarych, jak również przedstawiono rezultaty uzyskane dla określonych zdjęć medycznych. Zaproponowano technikę polegającą na konwersji bitmap o kolorze szarym z jednowymiarowej przestrzeni barw do przestrzeni trójwymiarowej. Zastosowana metoda umożliwia wyodrębnienie szczegółów obrazu w postaci kolorów, niewidocznych w czarno-białych obrazach medycznych, i w efekcie ułatwia ich analizę. W artykule przedstawiono też określone modele barw, stosowane w grafice komputerowej i wykorzystane podczas realizacji algorytmu.
This paper presents an approach to the pseudo-coloring of grayscale images. An application of use to the medical scans also has been covered. The algorithm enables conversion from one dimensional grayscale space, to a three dimensional color space, resulting significant color enhancement. This introduction of colour to greyscale images cancertainly make image analysis of medical seans easier. The paper provides background of some color models, used in the computer graphics and also applicable in the presented algorithm.

The aim of radiotherapy is to maximize the dose applied to the tumor while keeping the dose to the surrounding healthy tissue as low as possible. To further enhance dose to a tumor, techniques to radiosensitization of the tumor, using high atomic number elements, have been proposed. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of using gold nanoparticles as a contrast agent on tumor dose enhancement when the tissue is irradiated by a typical mono energy X-ray beam. To improve the conventional radiotherapy enhancement of the absorbed dose in a tumor tissue and to spare the skin and normal tissues during irradiation in the presence of concentration agent, a model based on a Monte Carlo N-Particle eXtended (MCNPX) computer code has been designed to simulate the depth dose in a phantom containing an assumed tumor. Test was carried out in two phases. In phase 1, verification of this model using the MCNPX was evaluated by comparing the obtained results with those of the published reports. In phase 2, gold was introduced into assumed tumor inside the phantom at different depths in the simulation program. Simulation was performed for four different concentrations of gold nanoparticles using a low mono-energetic parallel beam of synchrotron radiation. The obtained results show that the optimum energy for dose enhancement is found to be around 83–90 keV for all gold concentrations. The dose enhancement factor is increased linearly with concentration and diminished in depth along the central beam in the tumor. This approach of introducing contrast agents in conventional radiotherapy could hopefully prepare new treatment planning and improve the efficiency of tumor therapy.

Despite various speech enhancement techniques have been developed for different applications, existing methods are limited in noisy environments with high ambient noise levels. Speech presence probability (SPP) estimation is a speech enhancement technique to reduce speech distortions, especially in low signalto-noise ratios (SNRs) scenario. In this paper, we propose a new two-dimensional (2D) Teager-energyoperators (TEOs) improved SPP estimator for speech enhancement in time-frequency (T-F) domain. Wavelet packet transform (WPT) as a multiband decomposition technique is used to concentrate the energy distribution of speech components. A minimum mean-square error (MMSE) estimator is obtained based on the generalized gamma distribution speech model in WPT domain. In addition, the speech samples corrupted by environment and occupational noises (i.e., machine shop, factory and station) at different input SNRs are used to validate the proposed algorithm. Results suggest that the proposed method achieves a significant enhancement on perceptual quality, compared with four conventional speech enhancement algorithms (i.e., MMSE-84, MMSE-04, Wiener-96, and BTW).

Subspace-based methods have been effectively used to estimate enhanced speech from noisy speech samples. In the traditional subspace approaches, a critical step is splitting of two invariant subspaces associated with signal and noise via subspace decomposition, which is often performed by singular-value decomposition or eigenvalue decomposition. However, these decomposition algorithms are highly sensitive to the presence of large corruptions, resulting in a large amount of residual noise within enhanced speech in low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) situations. In this paper, a joint low-rank and sparse matrix decomposition (JLSMD) based subspace method is proposed for speech enhancement. In the proposed method, we firstly structure the corrupted data as a Toeplitz matrix and estimate its effective rank value for the underlying clean speech matrix. Then the subspace decomposition is performed by means of JLSMD, where the decomposed low-rank part corresponds to enhanced speech and the sparse part corresponds to noise signal, respectively. An extensive set of experiments have been carried out for both of white Gaussian noise and real-world noise. Experimental results show that the proposed method performs better than conventional methods in many types of strong noise conditions, in terms of yielding less residual noise and lower speech distortion.

This essay examines the ‘posthuman condition’ and its critical relevance to Joseph Conrad’s The Secret Agent (1907). It will be shown that oppressive examples of constitution-altering technologies find complex and recurrent depiction throughout the novel, often dismantling and redefining the physiques of their respective hosts. Most centrally however, it will be argued that Conrad criticises this notion of the posthuman condition through menacing depictions of ‘the Professor’, crucially emphasising the instability and endangerment potentially associated with the technologically-enhanced constitution. To this end, brief descriptions of The Secret Agent and contemporary conceptions of the posthuman condition will be provided. Thereafter, I shall explore the novel’s disquieting depictions of prosthetic technology and their detrimental effects upon the organic constitution, before then interrogating Conrad’s treatment of the posthuman condition and the devastation apparently inherent to this state of mechanical alteration. Finally, the novel’s ultimate denunciation of the posthuman condition will be considered, with particular reference to the death of Stevie and the numerous depictions of his fragmented body.

The SIW antenna suffers from the narrow bandwidth for a single cavity and single resonant. Defected ground structure (DGS) with a dual cavity was the solution to solve narrow bandwidth by resulting in hybrid resonance. The hybrid resonance with 14.83% impedance bandwidth is proposed in this antenna design. The first resonance resulted from the combination of the TE101 modes from inner and outer HMSIW cavities while the second resonance resulted from the combination of the strong TE101 and the weak TE102 mode from the inner HMSIW cavity and the addition of the weak TE101 from the outer HMSIW cavity. The measurement antenna design has a broadband antenna with a 14.31% (5.71 – 6.59 GHz) impedance bandwidth by using substrate Rogers RO 5880.

Studies were conducted using a 10-chamber Micro-Oxymax (Columbus, OH, USA) respirometer to determine the effect of bioaugmentation, biostimulation and combination of them on enhancing intrinsic biodegradation of oil hydrocarbons in soil. Contaminated soil was collected from a former military airport in Kluczewo, Poland. Bioaugmentation was realized by addition of indigenous or exogenous bacteria to soil. Biostimulation was done by aerated water supply and surfactant addition. Bioaugmentation + addition of a surfactant was applied as the combined treatment. The intrinsic and enhanced hydrocarbons biodegradation rates were estimated from the slopes of linear regressions of cumulative curves of O2 uptake. Pertinent biodegradation rates were recalculated on the basis of the stoichiometric reaction (mass balance equation) and conversion equation. The results showed that combined treatment (indigenous bacteria bioaugmentation + addition of a surfactant) was the most effective method of biodegradation enhancement as the 20-fold increase of biodegradation rate was observed.
Przeprowadzono badania mające na celu określenie efektywności wspomagania biodegradacji węglowodorów ropopochodnych w gruncie w wyniku zastosowania bioaugmentacji, biostymulacji lub metody kombinowanej. Próbki gruntu użyte do badań zostały pobrane z terenu Centralnej Stacji Tankowania (CST) lotniska Kluczewo niedaleko Stargardu Szczecińskiego. Bioaugmentację przeprowadzono z użyciem autochtonicznych i allochtonicznych mikroorganizmów zdolnych do rozkładu węglowodorów ropopochodnych. Z kolei biostymulacja obejmowała wprowadzenie napowietrzonej wody lub substancji powierzchniowo czynnej (SPC) do zanieczyszczonego gruntu. Biodegradację węglowodorów ropopochodnych szacowano na podstawie konsumpcji O2 przy użyciu respirometru Micro-Oxymax V6.0 COLUMBUS INSTRUMENTS. Średnie szybkości konsumpcji O2 podczas biodegradacji węglowodorów wyznaczono z równań aproksymacji liniowej krzywych kumulacyjnych. Na podstawie równania bilansu masy i wyznaczonych szybkości konsumpcji O2 obliczono szybkość biodegradacji węglowodorów, tj. szybkość ubytku substratu w czasie. Z przeprowadzonych badań wynika, że metoda kombinowana (kombinacja bioaugmentacji z dodatkiem SPC) była najbardziej efektywną metodą wspomagania biodegradacji węglowodorów ropopochodnych w gruncie - odnotowano wtedy 20-krotny wzrost szybkości biodegradacji.

Opis:
This work is a review of the book "Human Enhancement. Philosophical Perspective" (edited by G. Hołub and P. Duchliński, Jesuit University Ignatianum Press in Krakow, Krakow 2018). The main purpose of the text is a critical review of selected problems and views that are included in this publication. The article contains additions, comments, and polemics, as well as methodological remarks based on the literature in Polish and English.
Niniejsza praca jest recenzją książki "Ulepszanie człowieka. Perspektywa filozoficzna" (pod. red. G. Hołuba i P. Duchlińskiego, Wydawnictwo Naukowe Akademii Ignatianum w Krakowie, Kraków 2018). Zasadniczym celem tekstu jest krytyczny przegląd wybranych problemów oraz poglądów zamieszczonych w tej publikacji. Artykuł zawiera dopowiedzenia, komentarze, polemiki, jak również uwagi o charakterze metodologicznym, opierające się na rodzimej oraz anglojęzycznej literaturze przedmiotu.

Celem niniejszej pracy było scharakteryzowanie źródeł pochodzenia cząstek magnetycznych na przykładzie gleby inicjalnej skalistej i rankera. Analiza rozkładów pionowych wybranych parametrów magnetycznych i geochemicznych prowadzona była w trzech profilach glebowych wytworzonych z/na różnym podłożu skalnym (serpentynicie, amfibolicie i granitoidzie). Prezentowane badania oparte zostały o wykorzystanie wybranych parametrów magnetycznych: podatność magnetyczna (χ) i jej zależność częstotliwościowa (χfd), wspartych przez analizy geochemiczne (określenie zawartości wybranych potencjalnie toksycznych pierwiastków (PTEs: Pb i Zn) oraz Fe, a także zastosowanie wskaźnika geoakumulacji (Igeo). Wyniki wskazują na wertykalną zmienność wartości χ w profilach glebowych, która także odzwierciedla stopień zmienności pozostałych parametrów. W przypadku geogenicznego wzbogacenia magnetycznego wysoka wartość podatności magnetycznej w poziomie mineralnym (przejściowym) AC wskazuje na dominującą rolę procesów wietrzenia i redystrybucji ferrimagnetycznych minerałów z podłoża skalnego (poziomu R) do wierzchnich poziomów gleby. Natomiast, pedogeniczne wzbogacenie magnetyczne związane było z podpoziomem organicznym Ofh, gdzie stwierdzona została obecność superparamagnetycznych cząstek. W odniesieniu do profilu wytworzonego z granitu, magnetyczny i geochemiczny sygnał w wierzchnim poziomie mineralnym (Ah) jest efektem wzbogacenia w technogeniczne cząstki magnetyczne (TMPs).
The primary aim of this study was to characterize the origin and nature of magnetic particles on the example of Lithosol and Ranker. Analyses of the vertical distribution of selected magnetic and geochemical parameters were conducted in three different soil profiles developed on various bedrock to describe the local conditions and factors affecting magnetic enhancement. Examined soil profiles represent two type of soils (one Brown Ranker and two Lithosol) developed from igneous – plutonic (granitoid) and metamorphic (amphibolite and serpentinite) rocks, respectively. The measured magnetic parameters include: volume (κ) and mass magnetic susceptibility (χ) as well as frequencydependent of magnetic susceptibility (χfd). Moreover, magnetic data were supported by geochemical measurement of the selected Potentially Toxic Elements (PTEs: Pb and Zn) and Fe content, and quantification of soil pollution parameter (i.e. Geoaccumulation Index – Igeo). The results show that the vertical variability of χ values in soil profiles results also in a high variability of other presented ‘parameters’. In the case of geogenic magnetic enhancement, the high magnetic susceptibility values measured in mineral (transitional) horizon AC indicated the predominant role of weathering processes together with the redistribution of ferrimagnetic minerals from bedrock (i.e. R horizon) to the topsoil. Whereas, the pedogenic magnetic enhancement was related to organic subhorizon Oea (in soil profile developed on amphibolite) and reflects the occurrence of ultra-fine superparamagnetic particles. Magnetic and geochemical signal in the topsoil horizon (i.e. Ah) of profile developed from granite cause the enhancement of Technogenic Magnetic Particles (TMPs), i.e. the increment of χ is accompanied with the high concentration of iron, lead and zinc.

Reflections presented in this paper reverberate with the current social discourse based on respect for human rights, with heavy emphasis put on the active policy of employment of persons with disabilities. Improvement of the employment support system seems to be one of the most efficient forms of integrating this previously excluded and marginalized group of people into the mainstream social life. It is especially important in the case of persons with intellectual disabilities, who often remain in a particularly difficult situation for many reasons. Enhancing their autonomy via occupational engagement may be beneficial both at the individual (improved personal functioning) and macro (reduced costs for the state and welfare system) levels. The authors of this paper reflect upon the development and implementation of best practices in terms of building an effective mechanism of promoted social participation and the occupational engagement of persons with intellectual disabilities in an open social environment. This seems to create a real chance for community integration, to which these persons have the inalienable right, although so far they have often been left out of the mainstream social life.

Over the last two decades nanotechnology has become one of the most dynamically evolving field of research. The unique properties of nanomaterials, not disclosing at microscale, are examined and exploited to extend our understanding of the interactions taking place at atomic or molecular level. Those findings affect research in many areas, like e.g. alternative energy sources, electronics, physics and medicine. In this paper, the possibility of using nanomaterials for the enhancement of photodynamic activity, is discussed. A brief review on drug-delivery facilitating nanomaterials, regarding their characteristic features, is presented. An exemplary application of silver-doped nanomaterials for enhancement of photodynamic properties of two photosensitizers: Photolon and Protoporphyrin IX, is described. Influence of silver-doped nanomaterials addition on the fluorescence intensity of photosensitizers immobilized in silica-titania (SiO2-TiO2) sol was examined via VIS spectroscopy. Influence of sonication on the fluorescence enhancement was also investigated. It was demonstrated that the fluorescence enhancement of photosensitizers depends on the concentration of both: photosensitizer and silver-doped nanoparticles.

The following contribution aims at discussing the role of pedagogy against the background of a time in which limits are overcome through the use of new technologies. It is argued that pedagogy is in some way itself always related to both the recognition, as well as the overcoming, of limits. This can be seen first of all in the fact that both a recognition of the limit of the self as well as (or rather in differentiation to) a limit of the other are necessary in order to recognise oneself in the first place and therefore are essential to the constitution and formation of the self and the world. Secondly, the basic duty of pedagogy could be defined as the forming of human beings through the use of educational tools and by changing the limits that constitute the self. Adhering to this definition would therefore assume that there is a transhuman moment inherent in pedagogy itself.
Niniejszy artykuł podejmuje kwestię roli jaką pedagogika pełni w czasach, w których kolejne granice są przezwyciężane dzięki nowym technologiom. Autorzy argumentują, że w pewnym sensie pedagogika zawsze wiąże się zarówno z uznaniem, jak i przekraczaniem granic. Po pierwsze, świadczy o tym fakt, że zarówno uznanie granic własnej jaźni, jak i granic (bądź raczej odróżnianie się od) innego jest konieczne przede wszystkim w celu autoidentyfikacji. Z tego też powodu uznanie tych granic jest istotne dla konstytuowania i formowania własnej jaźni oraz otaczającego nas świata. Po drugie, podstawowe zobowiązanie pedagogiki może zostać zdefiniowane jako kształtowanie człowieka dzięki narzędziom edukacyjnym i zmianie tych ograniczeń, które konstytuują jaźń. Stosowanie takiej definicji zakładałoby, że w samej pedagogice zawarty jest moment transhumanistyczny.

The most challenging in speech enhancement technique is tracking non-stationary noises for long speech segments and low Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR). Different speech enhancement techniques have been proposed but, those techniques were inaccurate in tracking highly non-stationary noises. As a result, Empirical Mode Decomposition and Hurst-based (EMDH) approach is proposed to enhance the signals corrupted by non-stationary acoustic noises. Hurst exponent statistics was adopted for identifying and selecting the set of Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMF) that are most affected by the noise components. Moreover, the speech signal was reconstructed by considering the least corrupted IMF. Though it increases SNR, the time and resource consumption were high. Also, it requires a significant improvement under nonstationary noise scenario. Hence, in this article, EMDH approach is enhanced by using Sliding Window (SW) technique. In this SWEMDH approach, the computation of EMD is performed based on the small and sliding window along with the time axis. The sliding window depends on the signal frequency band. The possible discontinuities in IMF between windows are prevented by the total number of modes and the number of sifting iterations that should be set a priori. For each module, the number of lifting iterations is determined by decomposition of many signal windows by standard algorithm and calculating the average number of sifting steps for each module. Based on this approach, the time complexity is reduced significantly with suitable quality of decomposition. Finally, the experimental results show the considerable improvements in speech enhancement under non-stationary noise environments.
