With learning contexts globally promoting putting learners in the centre, it is no surprise that autonomous learning will gain ground in contemporary classrooms. As there is no learner autonomy without autonomous teachers, investigating instructors’ preferences about autonomous learning is necessary for more successful language education. The research assessed Georgian teachers’ viewpoints on fostering autonomous learning in EFL acquisition. The study employed a close-ended questionnaire completed by over 100 teachers. The analysis concludes that Georgian teachers associate obstacles with a lack of resources, technical problems, and class size, while challenges linked to teachers include lack of experience, limited development opportunities, and time management.

Opis:
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of the current study was to investigate emotions accompanying teachers in the process of getting accustomed to the new situation of distance learning during the COVID-19 lockdown in secondary schools in Poland. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The research questions concerned the type of emotions teachers experienced, the triggers provoking most positive and negative emotions, as well as factors influencing teachers’ emotional states. The tool used in the study was the questionnaire by means of which the teachers were to identify emotions they had towards people who took part in the lesson, the lesson itself, the equipment used and other interrelated issues in line with Yik’s circular model of affect. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION:  The way teachers reach students remotely, often unfamiliar, unknown to many of the educators, has been further complicated by the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to fulfilling their teaching duties, the teachers had to face extra-curricular difficulties and dangers, such as infection, isolation and quarantine, and gradually get used to the new situation. RESEARCH RESULTS: The obtained results indicate emotional changes at each stage of getting accustomed to the new situation. The tendencies observed could be described as increasing negative feelings experienced by the sample at the very beginning of distant education that lowered towards the end of the school closure periods, and/or were replaced with positive ones. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, RECOMMENDATIONS: The author presents measures to be used to improve the school situation, among which an immediate solution lies in the courses currently offered by many institutions, and IT support offered by schools. Also, ideas on how to expand the current study, involving those allowing for a comparison between different levels of education and among other participants of distance learning, such as primary/university teachers as well as learners and their parents and siblings.

The article substantiates the importance of using a communicative approach in foreign language teaching. The term “communication” is interpreted by scientists as a totality, meaningful generalisation of theoretical and practical knowledge presented in the form of concepts, principles, provisions that promote mutual understanding, and situations necessary for successful interactions. The purpose of teaching a foreign language in a higher education institution is the possession of future teachers of communicative competencies that allow them to implement their knowledge, skills and abilities to solve creative problems. The principles of communicative learning are determined: the principle of speech and mental activity, individualisation, functionality, and novelty. The main factors of effective application of the communicative approach important for teaching a foreign language are highlighted: communicative orientation of all kinds of training; the main link in learning by their interests, abilities, and needs; teaching materials are presented on a thematic or functional basis. Communicative teaching methods are identified, which are based on a humanistic approach and aimed at the development and self-improvement of the individual, the disclosure of its reserve capabilities and creative potential, create conditions for effective improvement of education in higher education. The scientific novelty of forming students’ communicative skills in higher education institutions is determined by changes in the education system, focusing on the formation of communicative competence of future professionals. The use of pedagogical tasks in foreign language classes allows students to form a communicative culture, skills and abilities of foreign language communication; contributes to the real, personal preparation of students for future professional activities; makes foreign language classes more interesting and meaningful. Orientation of foreign language classes on the development of professionally necessary communicative skills and communicative culture ensures the implementation of the principles of the contextual approach of learning, increases students’ motivation for learning and the success of foreign language learning.

Opis:
To expand the literature on the rather new concept of student burnout, the present study examined the influence of teacher immediacy and stroke variables on English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students’ experience of burnout. To fulfill this aim, a group of 631 undergraduate EFL students from various universities in Iran answered questionnaires including the Immediacy Behavior Scale, the Student Stroke Scale, and the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Survey. The results of confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) of immediacy and burnout scales demonstrated the validity of the two scales in the Iranian EFL context. Subsequently, Pearson multiple correlation coefficients and structural equation modeling (SEM) were used to analyze the data. It was found that student burnout subscales negatively and significantly correlated with teacher immediacy and stroke subscales. Moreover, the results indicated that teacher immediacy and stroke variables, in combination with their subscales, could predict student burnout. On the whole, it can be concluded that teacher immediacy and stroke concepts, characterized as positive teacher interpersonal communication behaviors enhancing rapport and positive interaction between the teacher and students in EFL contexts, are potential preventers of negative student-related outcomes such as burnout.

Opis:
While it is increasingly recognized that teachers have a crucial role to play in motivating learners, language teacher cognition research that focuses on beliefs about second language (L2) learner motivation and motivational practices is still rare, particularly in English for specific purposes (ESP) settings in Asia. Furthermore, much of what is available does not employ stimulated recall interviews to facilitate a comparison of espoused beliefs elicited beforehand, observed classroom practices and situated cognitions. We have employed such methodology in an under-researched ESP setting in China, to gain insights into the influence of culture and context on teacher beliefs and behavior. Our qualitative case study of three Chinese ESP teachers highlights harmony and tensions between espoused beliefs regarding student motivation and the teacher’s motivational role, and motivational practices, this harmony/disharmony being likely to impact these teachers’ self-determination. It considers possible reasons for identified tensions, including limited professional development opportunities in ESP, apparently dated knowledge of L2 motivation theory, deeply embedded Confucian values and an entrenched assessment culture. Findings suggest the need for awareness-raising and mentoring activities designed to support cognitive harmony regarding motivation and motivational practices amongst ESP teachers.

Opis:
Teacher agency occurs when teachers demonstrate a capacity to solve pedagogical and curriculum challenges. This article delves into how tertiary English teachers in Thailand practice their agency in response to the abrupt conversion to online teaching amid the COVID-19 pandemic. This study drew on teachers’ responses to a questionnaire (n=162) and semi-structure interviews (n=3) to identify their positioning and agentic actions. The results suggest that teachers’ positioning as being professionally responsible for students’ learning outcomes remains intact, even though the situation restricted them from going beyond their fundamental responsibilities. From a pedagogical standpoint, teachers’ agentic actions identified were endeavoring to create an interactive learning environment; implementing social media platforms to compensate for the loss of face-to-face communication; working with students to adjust their teaching practices; promoting autonomous learning; and incorporating formative assessment approaches. Teachers might find themselves struggling to achieve their pedagogical goals, but once they become familiar with the new learning environment and master suitable teaching methods, online learning can be a viable option for formal language education, even in the normal situation.

Opis:
In many countries, English as a foreign/second language (L2) teaching has become compulsory in urban and rural public schools. In rural areas, the challenges for the implementation of this state-sanctioned policy have been explored among L2 teaching specialists. However, this mixed-methods study considered a different teacher group and examined the struggles and initiatives of generalist teachers who are obligated to teach English in rural schools. To this end, data were collected from 115 teachers in 17 rural secondary schools in the Southeast of Mexico. First, the participants completed a survey with closed-ended questions that elicited information about teacher education, teaching experience and knowledge of the rural school system. Then, a subsample of participants completed an individual thematized semi-structured interview. They were selected on the basis of L2 teacher education involvement. In the survey data, response patterns were identified using frequency analyses. The interview data were analyzed using categorical aggregation. The data revealed that the generalist teachers struggle with L2 professionalization, sociocultural and instructional challenges. Nonetheless, only few participants have been engaged in L2 teacher education which could help them overcome these challenges. Instead, they rely upon limited strategies to counteract the day-to-day challenges at the expense of effective L2 teaching practices.

Opis:
This project attempts to measure how teachers in a TESOL graduate program practically employ technology to teach English for Academic Purposes (EAP). Determining how teachers in training employ technology in teaching is difficult as one first needs to determine an instrument that can track evidence of how teachers envision combining technology with teaching EAP concepts in their teaching environments. A teacher training activity that can also be used as an instrument to measure how teacher trainees use or envision using technology to teach is student generated teaching suggestions (SGTSs), an activity that asks teacher trainees to develop and post teaching suggestions related to weekly course readings to a Moodle forum. If the SGTSs relate to technology, this activity can also be used to develop and measure technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge (TPACK). Utilizing a longitudinal research design, SGTSs that employed technology to teach EAP posted in a number of master’s in TESOL courses over a three-year period are presented and analyzed to determine how teacher trainees envisioned implementing technology in their teaching, the value of asking teachers to make SGTSs related to teaching with technology, the implications of their suggestions concerning teaching EAP with technology, and ways to improve the activity to better develop TPACK in student teachers.

The fact that a successful language instructor has to be a reflective practitioner is undeniable. However, observations made during teacher training courses reveal trainees’ reluctance to self-evaluate their conduct and poorly-developed reflective thinking skills. In an attempt to aid the future teachers’ progress in this area, a series of written tasks was introduced during a course. These included: self-evaluation of one’s strengths and weaknesses, pre and post-microteaching reflections. The analysis of these narratives provides an insight into the trainees’ self-evaluation processes and demonstrates a gradual progress in their abilities from descriptive to productive reflective thinking. Thus the results seem to confirm the positive influence of the intervention.

Research outcomes derive from questionnaire (n=79), crosschecked with interview data (n=47), revealing their alignments. The first hypothesis was confirmed at a high level; the second was partially supported. Teacher power appeared to be distracted by power relations in interactions between native and non-native English speakers and among non-native English speakers themselves. The study offers two insightful directions for EFL teachers.
