The first part of the article discusses the popularity of editing courses at Polish universities and colleges in the last several years; it focuses on different fields of studies, e.g. law, history, librarianship, or Polish studies. Unfortunately, these courses are often limited to basic editor’s skills; the author expresses an opinion that, if they are not accompanied by advanced studies on literature and language, the professional success of the graduates cannot be guaranteed. The second part is devoted to the problems of textual criticism and scholarly editing in Poland nowadays. The author discusses the latest editions of important Polish writers and the most urgent needs in this domain. Another topic touched upon are the transcription rules of old Polish texts. The last part presents and discusses perspectives of the electronic edition: it may attain a high level of attractiveness and value if it becomes something more than just an image of the printed edition on the screen, something that cannot be simply printed out.

The article discusses the goals and methods for publishing anthologies of old sermons in connection with the publication of the monumental three-volume edition comprising a total of 1849 print pages, entitled: Sermons in Polish Culture. Editions of Thematic Collections, ed. K. Panuś, Vols. 1–3, Kraków 2014. This edition onsists of three separate collections of thematic sermons: Marian Sermons, vol. 1; Funeral Sermons, vol. 2; and Passion Sermons, vol. 3. It is the largest compendium of old preaching texts representing the homiletic tradition from the Middle Ages to the 21st century in Polish humanities. The three volumes comprise a total of 69 editions of original Polish sermons and translations from Latin, in the following order: 33 Marian, 15 Funeral and 21 Passion sermons. The compendium gathers 62 preachers’ talks from the Middle Ages, including Peregryn of Opole, Mateusz of Kraków, Mikołaj of Błonie, Stanisław of Skarbimierz, Jan of Szamotuły; and from the modern era, including Grzegorz Orszak, Jakub Wujek, Piotr Skarga, Krzysztof Kraiński, Fabian Birkowski, Szymon Starowolski; as well as contemporary authors, such as Stefan Wyszyński, Karol Wojtyła, and Józef Tischner. Each volume is preceded by a separate extensive introduction (by R. Mazurkiewicz, K. Panuś, M. Skwara, J. S. Gruchała) which presents the current state of research and lists of abbreviations, and states the principles of the publication and transcription. The main difficulty in preparing the anthology was the choice of the editing method, which could not be uniform due to the variety of time periods, the choice of authors, and the fact that Latin translations, original Old Polish versions, and texts in contemporary Polish were all included in one series. The editorial work was done in accordance with codicological, philological, and factual standards. Questions may arise with regard to the language. Would not it have been better to include the Latin sermons in the form of a testimonium? It was a result of the authors’ compromise between maintaining the editorial level, and the intention of making the ‘valuable source material for the history of language, literature, art, religious culture, spirituality, and customs widely available’. The answer to the question posed in the title of the article is positive. It is worth, as long as the edition and the critical apparatus go hand in hand with the proper selection of material and adopting a complementary, interdisciplinary perspective on sermons understood as pieces of sacral writing for spiritual development and religious teaching, which, consequently, become a treasury of ideas and language.
Artykuł jest dyskusją wokół celów i metod wydawania antologii tekstów dawnych kazań w związku z wydaniem monumentalnej trzytomowej edycji liczącej w sumie 1849 stron druku, pt.: Kazania w kulturze polskiej. Edycje Kolekcji Tematycznych, red. K. Panuś, t. 1-3, Kraków 2014. Na omawianą edycję składają się trzy odrębne zbiory kazań tematycznych: Kazania maryjne, t. 1; Kazania funeralne, t. 2 oraz Kazania pasyjne, t. 3. Całość stanowi największe kompendium dawnych tekstów kaznodziejskich reprezentujących tradycję homiletyczną od średniowiecza do XXI w. w polskiej humanistyce. W trzech tomach umieszczono w sumie 69 edycji kazań w oryginale polskim lub w tłumaczeniach z języka łacińskiego, w kolejności: 33 maryjne, 15 funeralne oraz 21 pasyjnych. Razem kompendium zbiera mowy 62 kaznodziejów począwszy od średniowiecznych, m.in.: Peregryna z Opola, Mateusza z Krakowa, Mikołaja z Błonia, Stanisława ze Skarbimierza i Jana z Szamotuł oraz nowożytnych m.in.: Grzegorza Orszaka, Jakuba Wujka, Piotra Skargi, Krzysztofa Kraińskiego, Fabiana Birkowskiego i Szymona Starowolskiego i współczesnych Stefana Wyszyńskiego, Karola Wojtyły i Józefa Tischnera. Każdy tom poprzedzony jest odrębnym obszernym wstępem (R. Mazurkiewicza, K. Panusia, M. Skwary, J. S. Gruchały) z przedstawieniem stanu badań, wykazem skrótów oraz zasadami wydania i transkrypcji. Główną trudnością w przygotowaniu antologii był wybór metody edytorskiej, która w przypadku edycji z kilku epok nie mogła być jednolita, wybór autorów oraz umieszczenie w jednej serii kazań w tłumaczeniu z łaciny z kazaniami w oryginalnym brzmieniu staropolskim lub współczesnej polszczyzny. Strona edytorska jest przygotowana pod kątem kodykologicznym, filologicznym i rzeczowym. Pytania może zaś budzić strona językowa. Czy nie lepiej było w przypadku łacińskich kazań umieścić je w formie testimonium? Był to efekt kompromisu ze strony autorów między zachowaniem poziomu edytorskiego, a intencją szerszego udostępnienia „cennego materiału źródłowego do poznania dziejów języka, literatury, sztuki, kultury religijnej, duchowości i obyczajów”. Odpowiedź na postawione w artykule pytanie jest pozytywna. Warto, o ile edycja i aparat krytyczny idzie w parze z właściwą selekcją materiału oraz z komplementarnym, interdyscyplinarnym widzeniem kazań jako piśmiennictwa sakralnego, służącego duchowemu budowaniu i religijnemu nauczaniu, i w konsekwencji „czytanych” dziś jako „teksty kultury”, skarbnica idei i języka.

The present paper contains information about dramas in editions of Cyprian Kamil Norwid's writings published up till now, and especially about editorial differences between them, mainly in the field of language, and to a lesser degree, in the field of punctuation. These results are then compared with the text of dramas prepared for a new edition of Norwid's works (Collected Works) that started to appear in 2007 under the imprint of the Learned Society of the Catholic University of Lublin. The Author of the present article has prepared dramas for the edition, taking the poet's autographs or (in case of their being lost) their first edition as the basis. It has turned out that a considerable number of corrections had to be made in the new edition of the text of Norwid's dramas, which is illustrated in the article by numerous examples.

Gerson Digital is the first of the digital monographies published on-line by the Dutch Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Dokumentatie (RKD) in The Hague. The monography is a revised and updated version of the now classical work by Horst Gerson, Ausbreitung und Nachwirkung der holländischen Malerei des 17. Jahrhunderts, Haarlem 1942). The scope of the so far published fragment is the chapter on Poland and the influences of the Dutch painting here. Gerson Digital is a very fine and scrupulous piece of editorial and translation work, but its novelty lies rather in the form: it has been published as a digital text interlaced with data (pictures, bibliography, person and artist indexes) that are drawn directly from vast databases which RKD has been building up for the past decades. The text is not therefore enclosed within the borders encircled by the author and his editors, but opens up to other resources. Reader may at some point abandon the text to follow an interesting thread by themselves. Gerson Digital clearly demonstrates the importance of databases for research in art history. Bibliographies, indexes, digital libraries, digital photo collections, and the like should no longer be understood as tools appropriate only for data storage and retrieval but also – and with time maybe primarily – as cornerstones of synthetic interpretation.
Gerson Digital to pierwsza z serii monografi cyfrowych publikowanych przez holenderskie Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Dokumentatie (RKD) w Hadze. Monografia jest przejrzaną i uzupełnioną wersją klasycznej już dziś pracy Horsta Gersona, Ausbreitung und Nachwirkung der holländischen Malerei des 17. Jahrhunderts (Haarlem 1942). Dotychczas opublikowany fragment obejmuje swym zasięgiem Polskę. Gerson Digital to edycja przygotowana bardzo pieczołowicie pod względem przekładu i redakcji, lecz jej nowatorstwo tkwi raczej w formie: jest to tekst w postaci cyfrowej, przepleciony rozmaitymi danymi (fotografiami, bibliografią, indeksami osobowymi), które odsyłają wprost do bogatych zasobów bazodanowych, zgromadzonych przez RKD w minionych dziesięcioleciach. Tekst nie jest przez to ograniczony ramami nakreślonymi przez autora i wydawców, lecz pozwala na przechodzenie do zasobów zewnętrznych. Czytelnik może więc porzucić lekturę na rzecz samodzielnego poszukiwania informacji w interesującej go kwestii. Gerson Digital jasno pokazuje, jak ważne są zasoby bazodanowe dla badań w zakresie historii sztuki. Bibliografie, indeksy, biblioteki cyfrowe i cyfrowe fototeki, nie powinny być odtąd postrzegane jedynie jako narzędzia do przechowywania i wyszukiwania danych, lecz raczej – a z czasem może: przede wszystkim – jako budulec, z którego powstają opracowania o syntetycznym charakterze.

Scholarly editing is a highly desirable and practical discipline. Being essential to philology, it now exists in different cultural, technological, economic, and organizational conditions. Obviously, it is possible to separate quintessentially scientific issues from so-called technical problems. Such separation does not demand vast knowledge, which does not interest or concern us, and gives the opportunity to justify potential mistakes. If some scholars’ attitude towards scholarly editing remains unchanged, it will lead us to stagnation and result in the long-lasting absence of unabridged editions of works by Polish classics.

he article addresses instances of the reception of Juliusz Słowacki’s Król- -Duch in Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz’s life and works; it is based on Iwaszkiewicz’s memoirs, diaries, reviews, literary texts, correspondence with his wife Anna, and the marginalia left on the copies of Król-Duch remaining in the poet’s archive in Podkowa Leśna. The article also includes a critical edition of the three texts on Król-Duch by Iwaszkiewicz, published in “Wiadomości Literackie” in 1924, 1925, and 1927. The first two texts critically review Słowacki’s narrative poem, the third is a literary sketch putting Król-Duch side by side with Marcel Proust’s In Search of Lost Time.

Autor opisuje sposoby dokonywania owych przekształceń oraz zastanawia się nad ich konsekwencjami.
The essay focuses on the operations to which Tadeusz Różewicz submits his (poetic and other) texts. These involve various kinds of transformations, as a result of which Różewicz’s poems become multiple texts and are revealed to be, in a sense, variants with no clear “original.” Skrendo describes the ways in which these transformations take place and considers their consequences.

In accordance with the title, the article is concerned with the editorial problems posed by the part of Norwid's work that is least known, that is his notes and albums,. The need of reflection on this domain of the poet's work appeared along with the new edition of the poet's Works. Within the edition Norwid's “portfolios” have been separated as individual volumes, which stresses both the qualitative and quantitative dimension of the phenomenon in the work of the author of On the freedom of speech (Gomulicki's edition of Complete Works included only the texts written with Norwid's own hand, excluding prints and illustrations – drawn both by the poet himself and by other people). On the one hand the article explains the reasons for such a decision, and on the other it undertakes a number of editorial questions as well as ones connected with the text that appear as a consequence of the assumptions that have been made. Apart from the problem of the autonomy of Norwid's notes and albums the question of the integral character of the collection has been touched upon; also, the problem of their final textological form, their contents (e.g. the question if inserts made by hand should be included, as they are not Norwid's own texts, but together with the notes and drawings they constitute a certain semantic and compositional whole). Ordering the illegible and sometimes complicated compositional design of the collection should be accompanied by reflection – which is shown by analyses – saying that in the case of Norwid's notes and albums (e.g. in the case of the so-called “his own summaries” or “the authors summaries”) excessive care taken of legibility and accessibility (an example being Gomulicki's edition) may lead to excessive “polishing”, and in consequence to upsetting the genological bases of the notes and albums. The problem is also raised of legibility of the notes and other sources Norwid used (often the notes are just excerpts from books he had read, and the drawings and water-colors are imitations of other artists' works). Selected issues from the domain of editing notes and albums show the specificity and stress the identity of this part of Norwid's work.

W latach 2012–2019 w ramach dwóch konkursów finansowanych z Narodowego Programu Rozwoju Humanistyki (NPRH) wydano 7 obszernych tomów antologii kazań. To „monumentalne dzieło” (prof. Alina Nowicka-Jeżowa, UW) mieści na ponad czterech tysiącach stron teksty kazań zarówno znanych i docenionych kaznodziejów, jak i mówców minorum gentium, komentarz naukowy do nich oraz aparat krytyczny. Seria, której wspólny tytuł brzmi: Kazania w kulturze polskiej. Edycje kolekcji tematycznych, „wyrasta powoli na jedną z najważniejszych w polskiej humanistyce XXI wieku” (prof. Roman Mazurkiewicz, UP). Po latach zaniedbań zespół badawczy projektu podjął na nowo szeroko zakrojone prace nad tym ogromnym i nierozpoznanym dotychczas zasobem źródeł, jakim są kazania. Artykuł przestawia stan badań nad dziejami kaznodziejstwa polskiego, założenia projektu Kazania w kulturze polskiej i uczestniczące w nim zespoły badawcze, kryteria doboru tekstów kazań, osiągnięcia w realizacji projektu oraz uwagi krytyczne wskazane przez recenzentów.
In the years 2012–2019, as part of two competitions financed by the National Program for the Development of Humanities (NPRH), 7 extensive volumes of an anthology of sermons were published. This „monumental work” (prof. Alina Nowicka-Jeżowa, University of Warsaw) contains on over four thousand pages the texts of sermons of both well-known and appreciated preachers and speakers of minorum gentium, a scientific commentary on them and a critical apparatus. A series with a joint title is: Kazania w kulturze polskiej. Edycje kolekcji tematycznych (Sermons in Polish Culture. Editions of thematic collections) „is slowly growing into one of the most important in the Polish humanities of the 21st century” (prof. Roman Mazurkiewicz, Pedagogical University). After years of neglect, the project’s research team resumed extensive work on this vast and hitherto unknown resource of sermons. The article presents the state of research on the history of Polish preaching, the assumptions of Kazania w kulturze polskiej (Sermons in Polish Culture) and the research teams participating in it, the criteria for selecting the texts of sermons, achievements in the project implementation and critical comments indicated by the reviewers.

Powieść Adama Jerzego Czartoryskiego pt. Pan Sędzia Deluty po raz pierwszy została wydana w 2005 roku na podstawie rękopiśmiennej kopii tekstu wykonanej przez Leonarda Niedźwieckiego, sekretarza Czartoryskiego. Niemniej jednak autograf jest znacznie bogatszy. Zawartość jego pierwszych dziewięciu kart – Czartoryski nazwał je „urywkami” – pozostaje w związku z powieścią, pomimo że wydaje się jedynie „tekstem pobocznym”. Fragment ten oczekiwał na wydanie do dziś. Co więcej, nigdy dotąd nie został odnotowany w żadnej pracy badawczej. Celem artykułu jest edycja tej cząstki zapomnianej lub nawet nieznanej prozy, która może nie wydaje się bez znaczenia dla wnikliwej analizy, interpretacji oraz zrozumienia całej książki Czartoryskiego.
Adam Jerzy Czartoryski’s novel entitled [Mister] Judge Deluty [Pan sędzia Deluty] was first ever published in 2005 on the base of the text’s handwriting copy made by Leonard Niedźwiecki, Czartoryski’s secretary. However, the autograph is much richer. The content of its first nine cards – Czartoryski named them ‘snippets’ – are in connection with the novel despite the fact that they appear to be only a ‘secondary text’. This fragment waited to be issued until now. What is more, it has not been mentioned in any research work so far. The purpose of the article is to issue a piece of this unknown prose which seem not to be without importance for thorough analysis, interpretation and comprehension of the whole book by Czartoryski.

The article shows the history of the Spanish and American editions of the novel Dalla parte di lei by the Italian-Cuban author Alba de Céspedes and the process of its retranslations starting from the several English versions of the text used as “text-pivot”. Through the investigation of the author’s intense correspondence with her publishers and taking into account Berman’s “Retranslation hypothesis” and Venuti’s approach within the Translation Studies, this work demonstrates how, in the 1950s, one of the most popular Alba de Céspedes’ novel used to be translated in other languages through different editing, revision and retranslation practices depending on the public of readers. In particular, Francoism censorship was decisive in editorial choices for the Spanish edition of the text.
Artykuł przedstawia historię hiszpańskiego i amerykańskiego wydania powieści Dalla parte di lei włosko-kubańskiej autorki Alby de Céspedes oraz proces jej retranslacji, poczynając od różnych wersji anglojęzycznych stosowanych jako “tekst-pivot”. Analizując korespondencję autorki z jej wydawcami i nawiązując do “hipotezy retranslacji” Bermana oraz podejście Venutiego w obrębie przekładoznawstwa, niniejszy artykuł dowodzi o tym, jak w latach 50. jedna z najpopularniejszych powieści Alby de Céspedes była tłumaczona na inne języki za pomocą różnych procesów edycji, rewizji i retranslacji w zależności od jej odbiorców. Zwłaszcza frankistowska cenzura odgrywała decydującą rolę w procesie wydawniczym hiszpańskiego wydania tekstu.

Bronia (Brejndl) Baum (1896–1947) was an orthodox writer, activist and publicist. She was born in a Hasidic family in Tomaszów Mazowiecki. She published poems and articles in Yiddish in “Der Jud”, “Dos Jidisze Togblat”, “Bejs Jakow” and in Hebrew in “Bat Izrael”, “Baderech”. In the family archive among the manuscripts of Bronia Baum from 1912–1921, a diary written in Russian has been preserved. Considering the content and form of records, it can be most accurately described as an intimate diary. The notes of Bronia Baum are a valuable source for research in the field of local Jewish history, especially during the First World War, but also for issues related to Jewish orthodoxy, Zionism and religious feminism.

Edycje źródeł stanowią podstawowe narzędzie pracy. Ich przygotowywanie jest zawsze żmudnym procesem, a zarazem próbą dla wydawców. Ponad 30 lat temu humaniści zaczęli korzystać z techniki cyfrowej podczas tworzenia edycji. Od 20 lat można mówić o e-edytorstwie jako odrębnej dziedzinie badawczej. Nadal głównym problemem pozostaje opracowanie jednolitych zasad, które umożliwiają jak najpełniejsze zbudowanie aparatu krytycznego. Wśród wielu propozycji na szczególną uwagę zasługuje Text Encoding Initiative (TEI), który jest szeroko stosowany do tworzenia rozmaitych edycji. W artykule przedstawiono niektóre problemy związane z budowaniem aparatu krytycznego przy pomocy TEI.
Source editions are a basic tool for the scientific activity. They are time-consuming and need a huge workload. They testify also skills of an editor. Since more than 30 years scholars have been using the digital technology for editing. Since 20 years an e-editing has existed as the established branch of science. Preparing a set of uniform and precise instructions for the critical apparatus in e-editions remains still a main problem. Among many programmes Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) is the most comprehensive tool for preparing of editions. This paper presents some problems related to creating of critical apparatus under TEI.

The article deals with the use of majuscule in religious terms in the context of editing the unfinished typescript of Stanisław Baczyński’s Propozycje. Nowa kultura – nowa cywilizacja. The author spelled the words such as Kościoł (as an institution, a population of worshippers), Boży, Chrystusowy (as possessive adjectives) inconsistently – once in uppercase, once in lowercase (the latter more frequently). The author of the article (and the editor of Baczyński’s work) analyzes orthographic norms, both present ones and those contemporary with Baczyński, and on this basis decides to leave unchanged the spelling inconsistencies in religion-related words. These inconsistencies are considered a result of the clash between the atheist worldview and the repressive function of orthography, and at the same time a proof of the author’s linguistic struggle, telling a lot not only about the creative process, but also about the idea of the work.
Artykuł podejmuje problem używania majuskuły w nazwach religijnych, w kontekście pracy edytorskiej nad niedokończonym maszynopisem Stanisława Baczyńskiego zatytułowanym Propozycje. Nowa kultura – nowa cywilizacja. Autor zapisywał słowa takie jak Kościoł (w znaczeniu instytucji, ogółu wiernych), Boży, Chrystusowy (jako przymiotniki dzierżawcze) niekonsekwentnie – raz dużą, raz małą literą (z przewagą stosowania minuskuły). Autorka artykułu (jednocześnie edytorka rozprawy Baczyńskiego) analizuje dzisiejsze, a także współczesne Baczyńskiemu normy ortograficzne i na tej podstawie podejmuje decyzję o pozostawieniu niekonsekwencji w zapisie słów związanych z religią. Uważa je bowiem za rezultat zderzenia ateistycznego światopoglądu z represywną funkcją ortografii, a jednocześnie za dowód językowych zmagań autora, wiele mówiący nie tylko o procesie tworzenia, ale też o idei dzieła.

The late Rev. Mieczysław Jacek Brzozowski is an important figure of Polish pastoral theology with homiletics as his specialty. His research and didactic work that was done in the Lublin circle considerably influenced the shape of Polish homiletics in the 20th century. The present discussion is a result of editorial study of Rev. Brzozowski’s school-leaving examination certificate. This means that it is a study of a document containing various kinds of information that may allow looking at it from the angle of the times in which it was issued. And first of all it may allow learning about the document itself – about its contents and its form. So this is not a historical study—there are no descriptions or interpretations of facts. It may only serve historians as an aid. Editorial work that has been done on the basis of the analyzed document seems to be a valuable complement of the knowledge of Rev. Brzozowski himself, as well as of Polish education in the middle of the 20th century. The document that only has one copy has been recorded in the form of an academic study. In this way its contents may be accessible to many potential recipients.

Opisuje dokonane zabiegi edytorskie (okładki, ilustracje, wybór, nadawanie tytułów, skróty, objaśnienia i komentarze, wstępy...). Ukazuje, jak zmiana adresu czytelniczego wpływa na kształt samych tekstów i ich potencjalny odbiór. 
The text is devoted to the critical description and evaluation of editions of works by Romantic writers intended for children. These are prepared ad usum Delphini. The texts are given in a selection suitable for children, rephrased (because they were originally mostly written for adults), prepared from larger works, and given in fragments. They are given new titles or retitled. The editions lack basic editorial information, such as indications of the sources of the fragments included in the anthology. The noble intention of introducing young readers to Romantic poetry is not counterbalanced by the fact that such editions offer a vision of a tame, infantilised, illustrated and finally caricatured Romanticism, inclining the reader to an extra-contextual and extremely simplified interpretation.

The review discusses the Polish translation of Alfredo Stussi’s manual Introduzione agli studi di filologia italiana, edited by the Gdańsk publishing house “słowo/obraz terytoria” in 2011. The reviewer starts out by emphasizing that such publications are needed for familiarizing Polish students with textual criticism abroad. It is interesting that in the first chapter Stussi includes some general information on the book as an object, discussing parchment, paper, script, structure of codex, printing techniques etc.; such elementary knowledge is scarce in Polish manuals of textual scholarship. In the next chapters, the Italian author discusses witnesses of the text, errors, kinds of textual variants, and methods of textual criticism, placing emphasis on stemmatic procedures and studying the originals (autographs, prints edited with the participation of the author). Other ways of dealing with the text (e.g. copy-text, the best text) are only mentioned by Stussi; the reviewer’s opinion is that it makes the book less useful for Polish students. His other critical remarks concern the translation of some technical terms into Polish, and especially the literal translation of the title of the last chapter: Filologia d’autore (Polish Filologia autorska), which is vague. Moreover, the edition lacks the bibliographic information necessary for the Polish reader. In the conclusion the reviewer recommends Stussi’s book only to the most interested students.

Wynika to z przyjętej przez T. Giergiela definicji edycji i jej płynnego potraktowania. Polemika dotyczy głównych wątków recenzowanego artykułu. Autor niniejszych rozważań przedstawia ponadto własne postulaty badawcze warte naukowego omówienia, bazując na osobistych doświadczeniach związanych z przygotowaniem metryk parafialnych do druku. Artykuł T. Giergiela został oceniony jako istotny dla rozwoju wiedzy o współczesnym edytorstwie metryk kościelnych i dobry punkt wyjścia do dalszego pogłębiania refleksji w sprawie metod ich wydawania.
This article includes polemical remarks on the analysis of the current conditions of editing the Old-Polish baptismal certificates, as was presented by Tomisław Giergiel. The author refers his comments mainly to observations concerning scholarly editions, excluding publications in which the contents of certificates were given in a diversified and popularizing form. This results from the definition of editing – and its flexible treatment – by T. Giergiel. The polemic concerns mainly the major motives of the reviewed article. Additionally, the author presents his own research postulates which are worthy of academic discussion, based on personal experiences with the preparation of parish certificates for publishing. The article by T. Giergiel was assessed as important for the development of knowledge on the contemporary editing of church certificates and a good starting point for the future reflection on the methods of publishing them.

The principles of editing historical sources have been discussed for decades, but most of the dilemmas cannot be unequivocally resolved. These include the decision to translate a foreign language source into Polish. Several factors should be taken into consideration, above all: 1. The editorial practice; 2. The language of the source; 3. The type of the text and the recipient of the publication; 4. The availability of the original for researchers of the era. Each of these aspects deserves separate evaluation.
Zasady edytorstwa źródeł historycznych są od dekad dyskutowane, jednak większości dylematów nie będzie się dało jednoznacznie rozwiązać. Do takich zaliczyć możemy decyzję o tłumaczeniu obcojęzycznego źródła na język polski. Decydować o niej powinno kilka czynników, przede wszystkim zaś: 1. praktyka edytorska; 2. język źródła; 3. Rodzaj tekstu i odbiorca publikacji; 4. dostępność oryginału dla badaczy epoki. Każdy z tych aspektów zasługuje na osobne rozważenie.

The article is a discussion of Volumes Three and Four of Complete Works by Cyprian Norwid, containing the poems by the author of Vade-mecum, edited by Stefan Sawicki, Adam Cedro and Piotr Chlebowski. The arrangement and the contents of the edition, the contents of individual parts of the critical apparatus (the editor’s notes, variations of the texts, explanations) were subjected to analysis. Moreover, the lessons and emendations suggested by the editors were analyzed in a wide range.

The origins of Dzieci nędzy (1913) and the story of its writing offer interesting insights into the creative work of Stanisław Przybyszewski, the most prominent writer of the Young Poland period. The study has revealed, e.g., his aversion (or inability rather) to introduce radical modifications to already finished texts and that his literary efficiency increased the further he was from big cities. A collation of the novel and a reading of private documents have enabled me to ascertain that the final shape of Dzieci nędzy was to a large extent influenced by Przybyszewski’s personal complications and trying circumstances, which severely determined (or rather undermined) his writing process, as well as the interventions by his editor who demanded additions to the work, with which the writer always agreed and added several chapters. Those diligently developed corrections proved how important the editorial remarks of the need to improve the text were to the writer. However, the most important discovery resulting from the textual study is that of the author’s decision to abandon his initial intention to author an epic poem in prose and shift to the novelistic form. That resolution, a kind of a surrender in the struggle with matter, proves Przybyszewski’s innovative approach to the novel and as a result of it Dzieci nędzy are an artistically interesting modern record of psychological states. In terms of structural and narrative solutions, it is clearly one of the most interesting novels by Przybyszewski.
Na podstawie prześledzenia genezy Dzieci nędzy (1913) i historii komponowania tekstu dokonano ciekawych ustaleń z zakresu działań twórczych najgłośniejszego autora Młodej Polski – Stanisława Przybyszewskiego. Badania ujawniły m.in. niechęć pisarza do (czy może: nieumiejętność) radykalnej modyfikacji raz dokonanych zapisów tekstowych i wzrost literackiej efektywności z dala od wielkich miast. Kolacjonowanie przekazów powieści oraz lektura dokumentów osobistych pozwoliły stwierdzić, że znaczący wpływ na ostateczny kształt Dzieci nędzy miały powikłania osobiste i przykre okoliczności życiowe, które znacząco determinowały (czy raczej: destruowały) proces pisarski Przybyszewskiego, oraz ingerencja domagającego się uzupełnień wydawcy, któremu pisarz skwapliwie przyznał rację, dopisując kilka rozdziałów. Te sumiennie dokonane poprawki świadczą o tym, jak ważne były dla pisarza uwagi redakcyjne w udoskonalaniu tekstu.Najważniejsze odkrycie, do jakiego prowadzą badania tekstologiczne, dotyczy jednak autorskiej rezygnacji z zamierzonego pierwotnie poematu prozą i przetransponowania jego idei w formę powieściową. Ta decyzja – będąca rodzajem kapitulacji w zmaganiach z tworzywem – świadczyła de facto o nowatorskim myśleniu Przybyszewskiego o powieści i sprawiła, że Dzieci nędzy to niezwykle ciekawy artystycznie, nowoczesny zapis stanów psychicznych. Od strony rozwiązań konstrukcyjno-narracyjnych to niewątpliwie jedna z najciekawszych powieści Przybyszewskiego.

The review focuses on presenting to the reader the latest book by Marek Buś, titled Idee i formy. Studia i szkice o Norwidzie, Towarzystwo Naukowe KUL, Lublin 2014. It answers the question of how the author managed to organise studies that differ in terms of genre and that are addressed to various recipients with different reading competences. It discusses the role of the publication in relation to the previous researcher’s works, and its unique value, also related to its contribution to the abolition of the barrier dividing books into those intended for a small group of specialists and those for the general public.
Recenzja skupia się na przybliżeniu czytelnikowi treści najnowszej książki Marka Busia Idee i formy. Studia i szkice o Norwidzie. Ze względu na charakter omawianej publikacji, która w znacznej części jest zbiorem wcześniej wydanych artykułów, opisuje ich charakter i przeznaczenie. Odpowiada na pytanie, w jaki sposób Autor poradził sobie z uporządkowaniem studiów różniących się pod względem gatunkowym i kierowanych do rozmaitych odbiorów, o odmiennych kompetencjach czytelniczych. Wskazuje na rolę książki Busia względem wcześniejszych jego prac, oraz jej wyjątkową wartość, także związaną z wkładem w znoszenie bariery dzielącej książki na te, przeznaczone dla wąskiego grona specjalistów, i na popularnonaukowe.

Edmund Jankowski (1912-1991) devoted all his life to studies of Eliza Orzeszkowa's life and work. He took care of the writer's archive, he worked out a nine-volume edition of her letters as well as other writings providing it with broad and detailed commentaries. He made available unknown, preserved in manuscripts, texts by the author, or their fragments. He is the author of a comprehensive, based on sources, biography of Eliza Orzeszkowa, which was edited several times.

Artykuł jest próbą zarysowania naukowego przeznaczenia badań filologicznych oraz ich funkcji społecznej. Na podstawie krytycznych ocen dorobku światowej filologii autor kwestionuje niektóre paradygmaty myślenia o tej dyscyplinie nauki oraz postuluje jej wykładnię, zgodnie z którą zasadniczym celem filologii – jako sztuki akceptacji oraz poszanowania unikalności tekstu będącego efektem cudzego procesu myślowego – jest próba zrozumienia innego.   Artykuł powstał w wyniku realizacji projektu „Redefniowanie filologii”, nr 0031/NPRH2/H11/81/2012.
The article addresses the scholarly aim of philological investigations and their social function. The author considers the critical evaluation of worldwide philological practice, questioning some paradigms of thinking about philology and promoting its definition as an effort to understand the other by accepting and respecting the uniqueness of text.   The article is part of the research project entitled “Redefining Philology” (Contract No. 0031/NPRH2/H11/81/2012).

Opis:
The article discusses difficulties in tracing Old Polish phonetics in an early printed text. It demonstrates the importance of rediscovering the Old Polish phonetics and, at the same time, the limits of such endeavour. The linguistic features are shown to melt with the conventional ways of printing certain words. These conventions have to do with graphic aspects of the text rather than with the real language. The problem is presented primarily by using Old Polish loanwords as an example.

This paper is an attempt to answer the question: can the process of historical source construction be a way of responding to national catastrophe? The primary meaning of the word catastrophe is the unexpected but logical conclusion of a play. Although the word "catastrophe" has changed its meaning, it still retains its connotation. It is not a meaningless ending. History cannot be the cure for catastrophe in the classical sense. Its effects are well described by the idea of Pharmakon, which we can find in Plato. Pharmakon is both a medicine and a poison. A person suffering a catastrophe is not cured, but rather is inebriated by history. It is what gives one the strength to survive the trauma of catastrophe. Historians are no exception. The second half of the article is a concrete example (case‑study) of how, under the guise of objective studies of historical documents, historians create realities that help them to relive (but not cure) the trauma of catastrophe. Often the historical source is perceived as an immutable, natural basis for the construction of a historical narrative. A historical source has no nationality, but it can obtain it. The most popular and simple way is the publication of new (or first) historical sources edition as "nationals" This article examines a specific example of the race between Polish and German historians (after 1945) on the issue of publishing historical sources concerning mediaeval Silesian history. Since the very same documents had to be published, the primacy in publication of new editions had to determine its "nationality".

The paper is about the theoretical and practical proposals of genetic criticism and its complicated relations with academic editing. The author discusses the benefits from applying that method of reading manuscripts, the related difficulties and possibilities of using its effects in digital editing. Examples of existing digital genetic editions are presented, with practical tips regarding the technical aspects – including the language used for encoding manuscripts and digital reconstruction of the text-producing process – related to such a presentation of a text in a digital environment.
