Opis:
This paper gathers and analyses the main parts of the Finnish model of design promotion. It starts with providing the clear idea of division into global and national mechanisms as well as into commercial and cultural initiatives. Global mechanisms work on an international level, raising the design awareness and building the global perception of Finland as the country of design. They include works of the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (now the World Design Organisation) and UNESCO. The promotional efforts taken on the national level focus on establishing the position of the designer and raising the understanding of the importance of design in public spaces. Those are supported by national organisations such as the Arts Promotion Centre Finland (Taike), the Finnish Association for Designers (ORNAMO) and Design Forum Finland (the official organisation of the Finnish Society of Crafts and Design), as well as local initiatives. The last section looks at the role of commercial initiatives, such as fares and marketing strategies, applied to design and the importance of cultural projects, such as museum exhibitions, publications, lectures, etc. All of the measures amalgamate to form a well-established model of design promotion which has been proven to work on many levels.

Opis:
Designing a machine’s constructions and an object’s structures is one of the areas of technology design. The complexity of the structure is defined by the technology for which it is used. Following the theory of construction and mechanisms, the full characteristics of a machine or device is defined by its shape and operating parameters. The shape reflects geometry. As a result of using the correct parameters, the construction should functional correctly (which means according to its general principles of operation). The project of any structure is a creative process performed by a team of designers and constructors. The contemporary design is not solely based on the personal preferences of engineers. More and more scientific and computerized design methods are being introduced to this process. They are characterized as computer-aided systems and are based on algorithms, programs, and IT equipment. This article presents the methodological application of computer-aided design on an example of the design of shaft furnaces that are used in foundries as cast iron smelters. These furnaces, called cupolas, have again become objects of interest for research. In the design of the cupola construction, Autodesk Inventor techniques were used.

Opis:
Today, more than ever, audiences are surrounded by imaginary worlds in which a wide variety of products and activities can be fully explored through multiple media windows. Imaginary worlds allow members of the audience to enter vicariously in the narrative space, spending a certain amount of time in speculative and explorative activities, experiencing the ‘possible world’ through the stories set within it. According to this, it is possible to differentiate between story and storyworld. While ‘stories’ are self-enclosed arrangements of causal events that come to an end in a certain period of time, ‘storyworlds’ are mental constructions shared between recipients and authors in which new storylines can be developed. This paper aims to discuss the implication of world-building activity for the design practice. Considering narratives and world-making practices as a matter of design, this essay will tackle the following question: how can a designer use the creation of storyworlds in his practice to activate new perspectives on specific contexts? In doing so, the first part of the essay is a brief summary of how imaginary worlds have evolved through the decades. Then, the second part is devoted to the presentation of the so-called Storyworld Canvas, one of the narrative design tools developed in our research group in order to support both storytelling practice and storyworld creation. Finally, the paper describes the project Watchmen of the Nine with the aim of analysing its storyworld from the perspective of the design domain, considering storytelling and world-building activities as ways to enrich the design practice.

Opis:
The text aims to investigate methods and techniques introduced by Scandinavian designers which are beneficial to the overall sensorial aspect of their work. To emphasize the wide spectrum of the subject, various materials would be taken into consideration—wood, glass, metal, textiles. Thanks to the analysis of selected case studies it is possible to showcase the main ideas of how the multisensorial design practices have been implemented within the realm of Scandinavian design, focusing on diversity of examples. The methodology applied uses the analysis method of design history combined with the perspective provided by cultural studies and their analysis of the broad context. To enrich the latter, also certain cultural associations will be considered. Wood provides the visual, tactile, and olfactory experience which has been used in both conceptual and commercial projects. Glass, often considered by designers exclusively for its visual aspects, brings the tactile element of shape and structure, which are meant to mimic the contact with nature, vital for many Nordic projects. Metal and textiles can be considered as opposite sensorial features based on contrasting properties, hot–cold, soft–hard. The study serves as an introductory paper to touch upon the question of multisensory in Scandinavian design, not thoroughly investigated in international literature, by presenting further opportunities for in-depth studies.

Opis:
Polish-born, Milan-based designer, Dorota Koziara has been active on the international design scene for two decades. Her artistic career has swung between her national roots and the well-established traditions of Italian design. Working alongside the iconic Alessandro Mendini, Koziara gained a brand-new way of self-expression, smoothly intermingling between the two cultures. Her activity covers an outstanding range of projects, she is also the winner of the Third Millennium International Sculpture Competition held in Italy. Her achievements on both Polish and Italian design scenes are a unique example of how fluid contemporary trends based on national heritage can be. In this border-free society, the influences and relations between Polish and Italian design seem to be highly important. After centuries of inspiration and domination by Italian art, today’s scene shows a different approach to multicultural dialogue, the results of which are apparent in Koziara’s works. The article focuses on her achievements in the light of reciprocal Polish-Italian influences.

This research adopted literature analysis methods to explain the principles and types of line illusion and, secondly, using Grasshopper software generated some fashion design samples with visual illusion element application. Then semantic analysis was applied to investigate audiences’ cognition, with the aim to improve the design. Lastly, Grasshopper software was used to generate new design patterns by changing the set of generated points through algorithm operation and dotted line interference to change the presented linear illusion forms and patterns. The results of this research show that with the support of parametric technology, the opportunities and space for creating line elements in clothing will be further expanded, enabling that real-time pattern or apparel design changes, and adjustments can be realized by parameter variable controlling. The research comprised a new attempt at combining linear visual illusion, fashion design and parametric design, showing the content and design case studies for relevant research in this area.

A short overview of the main techniques for turbomachinery blade design based on CFD is followed by a more detailed description on an Optimisation- and Inverse Design method, developed at the von Karman Institute. The optimisation method uses an Artificial Neural Network to extract knowledge from a Database containing the results of previous designs and a Genetic Algorithm to define the optimum blade. The inverse design method makes use of the Euler or Navier-Stokes equations to predict how a given 3D blade shape should be modified to reach a prescribed pressure or Mach number distribution along the blade surface. Examples of transonic compressor and turbine blades, designed by both methods, illustrate the potential of these modern aero-design systems. Special attention is given to the problems related to existence and uniqueness and to those features that facilitate the practical use of these methods.

Ship designing is a complex process, as the ship itself is a complex, technical multi-level object which operates in the air/water boundary environment and is exposed to the action of many different external and internal factors resulting from the adopted technical solutions, type of operation, and environmental conditions. A traditional ship design process consists of a series of subsequent multistage iterations, which gradually increase the design identification level. The paper presents problems related to the design of a small untypical vessel with the aid of variant methodology making use of optimisation algorithms. The computer-aided design methodology has been developed which does not need permanent reference to already built real ships and empirical-statistical relations. Possibilities were indicated for integrating together early design stages, and parallel designing of hull shape and parameters.
