Opis:
Introduction. It was established that intragestational depression is a common disease, with the estimated average prevalence of 10–25% in all expectant mothers worldwide. Aim of the study. The aim of the study was to evaluate the frequency of depressive symptoms in pregnant women in Poland and to identify which factors may be related to a higher risk of depressive symptoms during pregnancy. Material and methods. A prospective cross-sectional study was performed. Depressive symptoms were assessed with the validated Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). 346 women were enrolled in the study. Results. 130 women (37.6%) scored 13 or more points and were considered as presenting with depressive symptoms. Independent risk factors of depressive symptoms during pregnancy including mood disorders diagnosed before the current pregnancy (aOR=2.68, 95%CI 1.37-5.22), mental disorders confirmed in family members (aOR=2.72, 95%CI 1.24-5.98), unhappiness in their current relationship (aOR=4.0, 95%CI 1.77-9.01), lack of support from family members (aOR=2.73, 95%CI 1.51-4.96) increased the risk of DS and good financial status decreased the risk of DS occurrence (aOR=0.45, 95%CI: 0.25-0.80). Conclusions. Pregnant women commonly report depressive symptoms. The evaluation of relations with the family members, socio-economic status, former depressive symptoms and possible prenatal depression are essential for proper screening of depression in pregnant women.

Opis:
Depressive disorders have become one of the greatest health problems of the modern society, with about 350 million people suffering from depression around the world (WHO). The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of symptoms of depressed mood and symptoms indicating the possibility of depression or its progression among young people living in the city of Szczecin, Poland. Data from 150 students (107 women and 43 men) from one of the local universities constituted the material for this anonymous study which was based on the Beck Depression Inventory – 21 questions assessing the severity of depressive symptoms. Our results showed that 78% of women and 89% of men did not show symptoms of depression (Fig. 1). The incidence of mild depressive episodes was revealed in 15% of women and 7% of men, moderate episodes in 3% of women and 2% of men, and severe depression in 4% of women and 2% of men.

Opis:
Depresja według Światowej Organizacji Zdrowia (WHO) jest coraz częściej występującą chorobą współczesnego człowieka. Brak precyzyjnych i jednoznacznych badań powoduje, iż w danych mówiących o depresji wśród dzieci i młodzieży istnieją spore rozbieżności.
Depression, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), is a more and more frequent illness of the contemporary man. According to some predictions, at the current increasing rate of falling ill with depression, by 2020 it might become the second biggest cause of deaths amongst adults. The growing scale of the problem does not refer to adults only, but is increasingly affecting children and teenagers. The lack of precise and explicit research into statistics about depression amongst children and teenagers causes considerable divergence. It is estimated that in the case of children, morbidity amounts to 2%, while it varies from 8% up to 20% amongst teenagers. In percentage terms it does not seem alarming, but if you look at the issue in numbers, according to GUS data for 2014, the number of children (aged 0 to 12) totals 100,500, however, amongst young people (aged 13–18) the number reaches about 1,345,000. Facing such numbers, one should admit that this is not a marginal phenomenon. The purpose of this paper is to depict the character of depressive disorders amongst children and teenagers, giving general the features of depression and concentrating in particular on the ones typical of children and teenagers. It will allow us to create the profile of a young man stricken with such disorders. Moreover, the author will try to portray basic mistakes, especially those of home environment, in identifying and in the approach to people suffering from depression and he will also frame the vision of specific forms of support, which are necessary in the struggle with depression.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is one of the most important health problems and one of the most common chronic diseases. The occurrence of COPD is associated with a particular dimension of physical suffering, the source of which is the difficulty in breathing. A significant percentage of patients experience the mental consequences of illness such as depression and anxiety disorders. The aim of the study was to analyze the prevalence of depressive symptoms in patients with medium-severe and severe forms of COPD and to assess the cost of coexistence of depression in this group of patients. The retrospective study, based on medical records, included two groups of patients: Group 1- 63 persons and Group 2– 60 persons. The study evaluated the following parameters: degree of severity of COPD according to Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD), degree of severity of dyspnea using the mMRC scale of dyspnea developed by the Medical Research Council and occurrence of depressive symptoms and their severity using the Beck Depression Scale questionnaire. Patients were treated at the CENTER for Respiratory Medicine between January 2016 and December 2016. Results of our study showed that in both treatment groups analysis of the answers received from the Beck’s Depression Scale questionnaire revealed that all these patients have depressive symptoms of varying severity.

Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS)
Opis:
Objectives: estimation of psychometric properties of the Polish version of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) to recognize the symptoms of postpartum depression. Material and methods: The study was conducted from 2007 to 2011. One hundred twenty six women after childbirth were examined. The mean age was 28,34 years (SD = 3,96). The Scale was administered between the 4th and 12th weeks after delivery (M = 6,56 weeks; SD = 2,14) to mothers, recruit ed previously at the gynecological clinics and prenatal classes. All participants were submitted to a structured interview for postpartum depression diagnosis. Participants completed Polish version of EPDS and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) to verify the reliability and validity of the Polish version of EPDS. To assess psychometric properties of the scale, descriptives statistics, independent and dependent t-test, Cronbach’s alpha, Pearson’s correlation, exploratory factor analysis (with KMO-test) were conducted. The scale sensitivity and specificity were calculated, and the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to find the best cut-off point. Results: Using the factor analysis two factor were extracted, which accounted for 68,5% of the variance. Cronbachʼs alpha coefficient for the entire scale is high and amounts to 0,91. Stability factor estimated by test-retest was 0,761 (p < 0,05). Total scores of EPDS correlated significantly with the results of the BDI (r = 0,836, p < 0,01). Using 13/14 as the cut-off point, the scale’s sensitivity was 96%, the specificity was 93%. Conclusions: The good psychometric properties of the Polish version of the EPDS were confirmed in the present study. The results of the reliability of the Polish version of EPDS, do not differ from results obtained in other validation studies in the world. Polish version of the scale meets the basic psychometric criteria and can be successfully used to identify symptoms of postnatal depression.

Opis:
Psychedelics, as a plant-derived material, have been used for millennia in reli- gious and medical practices. They produce an altered state of consciousness characterized by distortions of perception, hallucinations, dissolution of self boun- daries and the experience of unity with the world. Classic psychedelics, also known as serotonergic hallucinogens, such as lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) and psilocybin were extensively investigated in substance-assisted psychotherapy during the 1950s–1960s. These early clinical studies reported improvement rates in patients with various forms of depression, anxiety disorders, alcohol dependen- ce. The development of modern neuroimaging techniques renewed interest in the investigation of psychedelics as a class of drugs that may reopen multiple the- rapeutic benefits. Current behavioral and neurochemical data show that psy- chedelics induce their psychological effects primarily via 5-hydroxytryptamine type 2A (5-HT2A) receptor activation and modulate neural circuits involved in mood and affective disorders. Clinical trials examining psilocybin have suggested that the compound relieves symptoms of depression and anxiety with rapid onset and longer duration. Serotonergic psychedelics enhance expression of neurotro- phic factors such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) as well as expres- sion of genes associated with synaptic plasticity and stimulate synapse formation. These effects are similar to those produced by fast-acting antidepressant keta- mine. Basic science research can reveal the neural mechanism of psychedelics action and how they can be used for treatment.

Corona infectious disease, which caused 12,5 million infected people and 560,460 of deaths (12 July 2020 Mainichi Newspaper Japan), had a great impact on the World economies. Many shops closed, cities closed, Champs Elysees in Paris and downtowns in New York and Tokyo became like ghost towns. It is said that over 25 millions of people lost their jobs in the USA. Also, there are traditional poor people, and the gap between rich people and poor people is widening. But we see this as an op- portunity for the rich to share with the poor. The rich man was not rich himself. Enriched by meeting various people, working in a company and getting support from his colleagues. That is the blessing of world relations, including nature. At present, coronaviruses are prevalent worldwide. The virus is neither rich nor poor. Everyone can contract it. The British Prime Minister wandered around the deadline. No matter how rich a person is, he cannot carry it until his death. So what should we do? According to Oxfam International1 (2019 January), only 26 wealthy people in the world own half of the world’s wealth. Conversely speaking, if the wealth of these 26 people is properly distributed to the poor, considerable poverty can be spared. Of course, it is not a simple alchemy. It is not just a payment of money, but a way for the poor to work and become independent. At this time, it is the idea and phi- losophy that are important. However, if you give money away, it will be a sermon. Instead, I would like to show that the merit of the donation to the poor who are unemployed due to the Corona depression will eventually lead to one’s own happiness and even happiness of the world.

Opis:
Wypierana latami przez przemysł farmaceutyczny niefarmakologiczna forma kuracji żywnością obecnie ponownie znajduje swoje zastosowanie we współczesnej terapii chorób o podłożu psychicznym.
Over the years, displaced by the pharmaceutical industry drug-free, nutritional therapy again finds its application in contemporary treatment of psychiatric disorders. There is a limited capacity and possibility of treatment, so now we can see a growing interest in alternative forms of treatment for these diseases. It is suggested that there are associations between nutritional deficiencies, the spread of typical Western diet, the difference in some metabolic processes (including increased oxidative process) and the occurrence of psychiatric disorders. However precise reasons for the increased incidence of these disorders in recent years is not known. No optimistic forecasts for the number of new diagnoses necessitate to take effective preventive measures and to develop new treatment strategies. It is suggested that the modern diet, deficit in nutrients – mainly vitamins and minerals – and rich in sugar, saturated fat and trans and omega-6, may have an impact on developing depression. Other risk factors include depression incidence in the family and those of the social and environmental origin. Possible positive therapeutic effect may have components such as omega-3, B-vitamins, tryptophan and other amino acids required for the synthesis of neurotransmitters, and zinc. Individually selected diet should be justified and should be conducted under the supervision of a specialist in cooperation with Family Doctor. More research is needed on the effects of compounds found in foods on psychiatric illness.

Obesity is a growing public health concern in modern societies. This is a major health concern. It has been implicated as a risk factor for several physical illnesses, functional limitations and poor quality of life. However, while the physical consequences of obesity are well established, the relationship between obesity and mental health is still unclear. The question this study aimed to answer was whether the associations between obesity and mood disorders are occurring in the sanatorium patients population. The results found a significant association between obesity and mood disorders. It is still unclear whether the relationship between obesity and depression is causal, and if so, whether obesity causes depression or depression causes obesity. Implications for health care providers and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Most of the pathological changes in the spine begin with the physiological loss of intervertebral disc function. Discopathy of the lumbar spine leads to a significant deterioration in the quality of life, which is why the therapeutic team strives is to improve patients quality of life through actions aimed at reducing spinal dysfunction to an extent that allows for human functioning. The research aim was to determine the quality of life of patients who had been treat- ed as a result of discopathy of the lumbar spine and to establish the relationship between the experience of negative feelings and a subjective assessment of the quality of life with factors resulting frompatient socio-demographics. The study included 110 patients treated for lumbar discopathy. A diagnostic survey method was employed as a research technique, with the use of a proprietary survey questionnaire. Statistic analysis of the results was performedusing the statistical package PQStat v1.6.6. Subjective evaluation of patients quality of life in 66 persons (60%) was at an average level, only 6 (5.45%) respondents rated the quality of their lives as being higher. Those living in towns of up to 50,000 residents rated their quality of life higher (6.21), with the lowest level being reported by those living in the countryside (4.95). Age did not influence significantly the quality of life, but older people most often experienced pain (p=0.4). Analysis of variance did not show statistically significant differences between marital status and respondent quality of life (p = 0.53) but did show significant differences between education levels and the incidence of negative feelings such as fear, anxiety or depression. Socio-demographic variables: such as gender, age and marital status do not significantly differentiate the quality of life of the respondents. There is a relationship between experiencing negative feel ings and educational levels. The lower the education level obtained, the more often negative feelings are experienced. The experiencing of negative feelings and disease duration are variables that reduce the quality of life of respondents. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Illness and the accompanying psychological and physical states are often hard to verbalize. For this reason and in order to appropriately describe a given state of illness one has to resort to metaphorical expressions. Based on this assumption we aim using depression as an example and deploying the Conceptual Metaphor Theory to show how psychological diseases can be conceptualised. Four main conceptual metaphors pertaining to depression have been singled out and discussed. The basis for the investigation constitute verbal collocations which have been extracted from the DWDS corpus and analysed using the Wortprofil tool.

The aim of this article is to investigate the conditions for depression syndromes among junior high school pupils from the Lubuskie and Wielkopolskie Voievodships and to diagnose their emotional condition. The authors refer to T. Parsons’ concept, according to which, health is as an optimal ability to fulfill social roles and expectations imposed by the environment. In this context, puberty and attending junior high school constitute a huge challenge and an experimental field for teenagers, which affects self-assessment of their mental health and emotional condition. Most mental health disorders result from the processes of growing up. The empirical basis for the undertaken considerations are the results of questionnaire surveys conducted in the spring of 2017.

Late-life depression is a serious and increasing problem in contemporary society, although it seems to be underestimated in clinical practice. It leads to high mortality, deteriorates general somatic condition, escalates disability and destroys patients’ and their families’ quality of life. Depressive symptoms may be difficult to identify and interpret in the elderly because other concomitant pathologies mask the signs of depression. In the article, the specific psychosocial background and clinical features of late-life depression were described. The diagnostic challenges and their sources were recognized. Depression-executive dysfunction syndrome and other cognitive deficits manifested by patients with late-life depression were characterized. Monitoring of patients’ cognitive functioning was recommended in the course of late-life depression treatment.

Intestinal bacteria and the microbiota-brain-intestin axis have been the subject of intense research in the last decade. Until recently, it seemed unlikely to combine fecal microflora with mood disorders. The growing amount of animal research shows that one of the etiological factors of mood disorders may be irregularities in this area. Evidence indicates the existence of an extremely important two-way relationship between bacteria, intestines and the brain, and that this interaction is complex and takes place on many levels. Understanding and analyzing this dependency gives new possibilities in the therapy of mood disorders, such as the use of psychobiotics, prebiotics or drugs which selectively eliminate specific bacterial strains (antimicrobials). Psychobiotics are „good” bacteria which, when consumed in appropriate doses, have a positive effect on the intestinal axis and on the condition of patients with mental disorders. Studies on their use show good results in the treatment of diseases such as depression. In people suffering from depression, significant differences in the composition of the intestinal microflora were observed, which speaks for its essential role in this disease. Even greater role of bacteria in mood disorders favors research that proves that fecal microbiota transplant entails consequences in the form of behavioral changes.

Introduction. Depression is a mental illness widespread in the population and is the most common mental disorder. There has been an increase in number of depression diagnoses among the wider population in the past few years. Aim. The aim of the study was to gain knowledge regarding the attitudes towards depression and to measure the occurrence of depression symptoms among open populations of Polish and British people. Materials and methods. The study was conducted from March to May 2015 by posting an electronic survey on a social network in Polish and English language. 143 completed questionnaires were obtained. The method of diagnostic survey was used in this study. The research tools was a survey created by the authors and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Results. Every third respondent acknowledged that they have a sufficient knowledge of depression. Based on BDI results, 75% of Poles and 39% of British did not show any signs of depression. Conclusions. The British understand the term “depression” correctly more often than Poles. The inhabitants of Poland and Great Britain take a positive attitude towards people with depression. The British have depressive symptoms more frequently than Poles. Nationality and age do not affect the severity of depressive symptoms in both groups.

Suicide is a type of behaviour which assumes the need of overcoming the instinct of self-preservation, as well as overcoming the natural fear of death; it is therefore an act which is in contradiction with basic human instincts. Scientists looking for the answer to the question, what makes people decide that they want to end their life, focus on different aspects of the problem, and as a consequence it is possible to distinguish several directions of suicidal behaviour analysis; they include, among others, psychiatric and psychological directions. Psychiatry analyses suicide in the context of psychological disorders of a person. Psychology studies self-destructive behaviours with particular focus on human psychology, motivation, personality and consciousness of the made decision. Findings of those sciences will be the subject of this article.

Opis:
The high prevalence of depression globally and the severe burden of this life-threatening mental illness necessitate an evidence-based approach to its treatment, in order to offer best-possible relief to those suffering from it. The present bestpractice guideline was originally developed by a team of psychiatrists, psychologists, and other mental health professionals at a large psychiatric teaching hospital and outpatient clinic network in Michigan, USA. The document draws from several current major guidelines for the treatment of adult patients with depressive disorders published by national and international health organisations, such as the American Psychiatric Association (USA), Canadian Network for Mood and Anxiety Treatments (Canada), National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (UK) and World Health Organization (EU). The present document emphasizes the areas of broad consensus across these guidelines and, as such, the treatment recommendations contained herein represent the current “gold standard” in the field of psychiatry in the West. Part I of this two-part series covers a range of relevant psychiatric treatment aspects, from general patient management to treatment-stagespecific and population-specific recommendations. Special attention is given to pharmacotherapy, somatic therapies, treatment strategies for non-response and management of perinatal depression. Additional resources, including clinicianand patient-oriented websites and links to the full-text major published guidelines, where available, are provided. Psychiatric clinicians are encouraged to utilise the evidence-based practice recommendations for best-possible patient outcomes.
Dokument ten bazuje na aktualnych zaleceniach dotyczących leczenia dorosłych pacjentów z zaburzeniami depresyjnymi wydanych przez uznane krajowe i międzynarodowe instytucje zdrowotne, takie jak Amerykańskie Towarzystwo Psychiatryczne (American Psychiatric Association) (USA), Kanadyjska Sieć Leczenia Zaburzeń Nastroju iLękowych (Canadian Network for Mood and Anxiety Treatments) (Kanada), Narodowy Instytut Zdrowia iDoskonałości Klinicznej (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) (UK) oraz Światowa Organizacja Zdrowia (World Health Organization) (UE).

Purpose: Depressive disorders and obesity belong to the most frequently occurring diseases. Improper nutritional behaviours are observed in patients suffering from recurring depressive disorders. We have undertaken research aimed at comparing the body weight composition and the content of selected nutrients in the food intake of patients with diagnosed depressive disorders. Materials and methods: 131 patients (76 women and 55 men) suffering from depressive episode took part in the study. The patients had their body composition analysed using electrical bioimpedance measured by a MALTRON BioScan 920-2 device. The assessment of the diet was conducted using a 24-hour interview concerning the day preceding the examination. Results: Male with diagnosed depression and obesity were more often married or had lower level of education as compared to male with the normal body weight. Obese female with diagnosed depression had more episodes of the disease and were older as compared to female with the normal body weight. Both obese male and female were characterised by a higher percentage content of visceral adipose tissue, subcutaneous adipose tissue and a higher VAT (visceral adipose tissue)/SAT (subcutaneous adipose tissue) ratio as well as a lower content of fat-free body mass. Conclusions: Patients with diagnosed depression, with the normal body weight and obesity, were characterised by an inappropriate supply of proteins, carbohydrates, total fats, saturated and unsaturated fatty acids and dietary fibre.

The article discusses the theme of melancholy in Polish prose of the 21st century, using four contemporary novels – Pokolenie Ikea [The IKEA generation](2012) by Piotr C., Wszyscy jesteśmy hipsterami [We are all hipsters] (2016) by Dariusz Radecki, Melanżeria [Melangery] (2011) by Anna Klara Majewska and Za pięć rewolta [Five minutes to a revolt] (2011) by Dawid Kain – as conspicuous examples of its presence. The author suggests that due to the increased pace of social and technological changes the generation of thirty-year-olds experiences a feeling of melancholy, formerly characteristic for elderly people and analyses the protagonists of the novels selected to present how they cope with a reality that does not fulfil them.

Opis:
Introduction: Ischemic heart disease is the most common cause of death in the world. The lives of patients with vascular defects can be saved by coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). However, it is associated with an increased risk of developing depression after surgery. Meterial and Methods: The aim of the study is to present the results of the latest research on postoperative depression after CABG, including studies describing the course of the disease, its consequences for the patient’s prognosis and treatment. The publications available on the PubMed platform published after 2011 were reviewed. Results: Depression before and after CABG affects 30–40% of patients, mostly women. Established after surgery and untreated, it persists for many years. The level of anxiety in patients decreases systematically after surgery. Indicators that may correlate with the patient’s postoperative depression, including cortisol, high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) and oxidative stress biomarkers, are being investigated. The occurrence of depression in patients after CABG has a number of negative consequences. Those include: weaker response to treatment, greater chance of relapse, and increased readmission frequency and mortality. Treatment of patients with this disorder involves the use of antidepressants (most often SSRIs – selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) and/or various types of psychotherapy with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) at the forefront. Conclusions: Depression following CABG decreases the quality of life and worsens patient prognosis. It is necessary to detect this condition early after surgery and to apply treatment, taking into account the cardiological disorders of the patient.

Previous studies show that maladaptive metacognitive beliefs may constitute the psychopathological core of anxiety and depression. Recent findings also indicate that anxiety exacerbates the severity of depression. We investigated the hypothesis that anxiety mediates the relationship between faulty metacognitive beliefs and depressive symptoms in normal subjects. Two hundred and eight normal participants completed the Metacognitions Questionnaire (MCQ), the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory(STAI), and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). We performed mediation analysis to explore the relationships between metacognition, depression, and trait anxiety as a mediator. Our study showed that positive beliefs about worry, negative beliefs about uncontrollability and danger, low cognitive confidence, and negative beliefs about the need to control thoughts, and cognitive self-consciousness were mediated by the level of anxiety associated withthe severity of depression. Moreover, the mediation analysis indicated that only cognitive confidence beliefs directly influenced the intensity of depressive symptoms.

Although randomized trials have proven the benefit of revascularization with the use of carotid endarterectomy (CEA) or stenting (CAS) for appropriate patients, health care purchasers increasingly look beyond clinical outcome toward measures of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in apportioning limited resources. 36 patients after TIA participated in this study. One group (n=18) had undergone CEA, whereas the second group (n=18) had undergone CAS. Both groups were matched according to age and sex. The Short Form 36 (SF-36) was used to assess the differences in patient-perceived HRQoL in two groups of patients who had suffered minor cerebral ischemic events. No significant difference in health profile between the CEA and CAS was detected for the eight SF-36 domains. However, the CEA group rated a significantly improved change in general health after one year compared with the CAS group (p<0.001). A greater proportion of the CEA group comparing to the CAS group thought their treatment had been successful and that their health had been improved (p<0.001). Both groups shared the same level of anxiety over potential future cerebral ischemic events (p=0.3). Patients' perception of HRQoL measured by the SF-36 domains was almost identical between the CEA and CAS apart from a small but significant improvement in self-reported overall health in the CEA group after one year follow up. HRQoL outcome measures may be of value in future clinical trials of cerebral revascularization to compare the effectiveness of carotid revascularization with the particular method of operation.

The aim of the study is to comprise in one work the cyclicality and ethnic and religious continuity of the Petroşani Depression between 1850-2011. In the second half of the 19th century, the depression was subjected to cycles of colonization that had consequences for the ethnic and religious structure. The ethnic and religious continuity was preserved throughout this period, even though after 1930, some of the settlers remigrated to their birthplace. Compared to the late 19-century censuses, the herds have fallen to 2011, but none of the ethnics and confessions have completely disappeared. The statistical data used were taken from the literature mentioned during the work and on the online platform of the National Institute of Statistics. The geographic information systems were used to achieve the geographical position map at the county and national level of the Petroşani Depression.

Background: Both depressive disorders and nicotine use are proven and important risk factors of dementia. The purpose of this study was to verify if cigarette smoking and depression symptoms together are disadvantageous for the prognosis in mild cognitive impairment. Material and methods: A total of 43 patients with a diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment were included in the study. ADAS-Cog was performed upon inclusion in the study and again at least 2 years later. Additionally, patients with ≥18 points in MADRS were qualified as depressive. The Fagerström scale for nicotine dependence was administered to smokers. Results: Our study shows a relation between severity of depressive symptoms and further deterioration of cognitive functions according to ADAS-cog scale. Regression analysis revealed that smoking associated with severity of depressive disorders is also correlated with the progression of cognitive impairment. Conclusions: The results of our study are based on a small number of subjects and should be regarded as early findings. Moreover, nicotine dependency should not be regarded as an isolated factor affecting mood disorders and cognitive impairment progression. Further studies on larger groups of patients and using more sensitive methods of cognitive function assessment are needed.

Corona infectious disease, which has caused 12.5 million infected people and 560,460 deaths (July 12, 2020 Mainichi Journal Japan), has had a significant impact on global economies. Many shops closed, cities closed, the Champs Elysees in Paris and the city centers of New York and Tokio have become ghost towns. It is said that over 25 million people have lost their jobs in the United States. In addition, there are traditional poor and the gap between rich and poor is widening. But we see this as an opportunity for the rich to share with the poor. The rich man was not himself rich. Enriched by meeting different people, working in a company and obtaining the support of colleagues. It is the blessing of world relations, including nature. Right now, coronaviruses are prevalent all over the world. The virus is neither rich nor poor. Anyone can get it. The British Prime Minister wandered around the deadline. No matter how rich a person is, he cannot carry it until his death. So what should we do? According to Oxfam International1 (January 2019), only 26 rich people in the world own half of the world’s wealth. Conversely, if the wealth of these 26 people is properly distributed among the poor, considerable poverty can be spared. Of course, this is not just alchemy. It is not just a cash payment, but a means for the poor to work and become self-employed. Right now, it’s the idea and the philosophy that are important. However, if you donate money, it will be a sermon. Instead, I would like to show that the merit of giving to the poor who are unemployed due to Corona Depression will ultimately lead to their own happiness and even the happiness of the world.

The problem of search of an authenticity of the cities looks very actual and draws attention of numerous researchers. In the article the analogy between the human person and the city in this problem is used. For the person, as well as for the city, awareness of own identity is necessary to resist depressive tendencies. It is shown that symptoms of depression of the person are similar to the ones for depression of the cities. The identity of the city necessary for opposition of a depression is offered to be looked for in two planes – historical and geographical (to be looked for in historical and geographical plane). The historical plane is made by local myths and legends of the city and its inhabitants. The geographical plane of identity is concentrated on features of relief, climate, flora and fauna of that region in which the city is located.

Introduction: Diabetes is a disease whose course is strongly determined by self-monitoring and self-care. Ensuring metabolic control of diabetes is not only important for the current state of health, it also allows to maintain the body in the best condition despite the existing chronic disease. Purpose: To assess the relationship between sociodemographic factors and depression symptoms and the level of disease acceptance in diabetes. Materials and methods: The study used a diagnostic survey method with a questionnaire, the Beck Depression Inventory, and the Acceptance of Illness Scale. The study group consisted of 43 women (51%) and 41 men (49%). A total of 67% of respondents had diagnosed type 2 diabetes, 24% type 1 diabetes, and 6% LADA. Average disease duration was 15 years. Results: In the studied group, 15% of patients had diagnosed symptoms of depression; while according to the Beck Depression Inventory, depressive episodes occurred more often in mild (30%) and moderate (23%) severity. They were observed more often in people over 50 years old. Depression symptoms were significantly more common in the group of overweight and obese people (p=0.022, r(X,Y)=0.2490). Conclusions: The problem of depression increases with disease duration. People diagnosed with type 2 diabetes have lower levels of disease acceptance. Opis:
Introduction: A vertical posture distinguishes humans from other living beings. It also determines the specific conditions for movement. The element which connects body posture and movement is stability. It is based on the static and dynamic balancing of the destabilising forces of gravity and inertia through stimulating the appropriate muscle groups. A disruption of postural control may be conditioned by various factors, among which the literature mentions mental health. The purpose of this study was a comparative analysis of selected variables characterising the postural stability of persons with depression.Material and methods: The study involved fifty-four persons who were divided into two groups. The first group comprised 28 patients diagnosed with depression. The mean age of the participants was 37.25 +/ – 3.88. The second group consisted of 26 completely healthy persons who were recruited from the general population, excluding persons with depression or a low mood. The mean age of the participants was 33.31 +/ – 5.19 years. The postural stability was assessed using a PEL 38 posturographic platform and TWIN 99 computer software. Results: The results differed significantly between the two groups with regard to five variables: oscillations of the centre of gravity in the frontal and the sagittal planes, average deviation in the frontal plane, and deviations in the parameters of instability (the surface area and the ratio of length to the surface area). It was observed that the group with a diagnosis of depression displayed higher values in 4 out of 5 the evaluated parameters when compared to the control group. Conclusions: Persons with depression are characterised by a reduced body stability compared to those who do not suffer from depression.
Do drugiej grupy zakwalifikowano 26 osób. Osoby te były w pełni zdrowe, rekrutowane z ogólnej populacji, u których wykluczono depresję i obniżenie nastroju. Średnia wieku badanych wynosiła 33,31 +/- 5,19 lat. Do badań oceniających stabilność wykorzystano platformę PEL 38 i oprogramowanie komputerowe TWIN 99. Wnioski: Osoby z depresją cechuje zmniejszenie stabilności ciała w porównaniu do osób bez depresji.

Psychology of old age is a new field that attempts to explain the functioning of the psyche during the final stages of life. Psychoanalysis was initially very skeptical towards older patients, but faced with increasing number of senior adults, the fields of psychology and psychoanalysis had to adapt, searching for explanations and answers aimed at understanding human aging. The goal of geriatric psychotherapy is to assist elderly individuals in their psychological mentalization, including the mental process of mourning their "self," which goes through a difficult period of losses, so that they do not fall into psychosomatic symptoms or depression. Psychotherapy can thus support a positive sense of identity.

Background. Marital adjustment is an evolutionary process between a husband and wife that is created, strengthened or weakened in life. Mental health and healthy and pleasant sexual functioning seem to be important in promoting it. Objectives. The aim of this study was to determine any correlations of marital adaptation with stress, anxiety, depression or sexual function and its components. Material and methods. This cross-sectional study was done on 514 women of reproductive age who were referred to health centers in Shiraz and were chosen by random sampling. The Spinner marital adaptation questionnaire, the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) and the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (Dass-21) were the study tools. The statistical tests applied for data analysis were the t-test, Fisher’s, chi-squared and Pearson’s coefficient correlation. Results. Marital conflict was reported in 54.7% of women. The average score of sexual function was significantly less in maladaptive patients than in adaptive ones (22.32 ± 7.05 versus 26.53 ± 5.01). There was a significant link between marital adaption and components of sexual function (p < 0.05). The mean scores of stress, anxiety and depression in the maladaptive group were 9.14 ± 4.74, 6.60 ± 4.56 and 7.75 ± 4.79 versus 6.53 ± 4.62, 4.48 ± 3.93 and 4.06 ± 4.21, respectively, which was statistically significant (p < 0.05). Conclusions. As to data analysis, sexual function, stress, anxiety and depression affect marital adaptation. Therefore, providing the necessary relevant education can improve the family health, couples intimacy and marital satisfaction.

One of the most common causes of disability of Slovak people is mental illness. According to psychologists, this trend lasts for several years and the situation is not improving. The cause is mainly lifestyle. In the entire World are suffering from depression over 110 million men and women. It is the most common psychological disorder. Numbers of depressed patients increase by 3% every year. Depression affects many people of working age, regardless of their social and economic status. Up to 15% of people suffering from depression attempt suicide and only 25% seek out profes- sional psychiatric help. This disease belongs to the man as well as an ap- pendix. Depression is not just an ordinary grief that gnaws at the soul of man. In the care of the mentally ill has the nurse in communicating a very im- portant place. Skills of nurses should be at a level such that she under- stands the patient, supports him, could effectively intervene at any time and, if necessary, be close to patient. It is primarily she who spends most of his time with the patient.

Amelia Rosselli
Opis:
In one of her many poetic motivation descriptions included in her literary works and comments, Amelia Rosselli points to tough-life experience as a factor influencing her artistic creativity. The Italian twentieth-century poet repeatedly emphasizes a direct impact of mental well-being as the driving force of her writing process. A gloomy flashback, hand in hand with a concept, experience, and fantasy, influence the expression of her pieces and structures the literary space. A minor overtoned reference to the grievous reality of Fascist Italy connected with the murder-for-hire of family members, sudden and premature death of her sweetheart and brother, mental illness in the context of the DNA memory, and, finally, the promise of suicide had all impacted noticeably upon the verses of her poems. Another thing worth mentioning is the issue of stress and hardships lived through by Amelia Rosselli’s mother and her immediate relatives just prior to the poet’s birth. According to the latest developments in medicine and cognitive sciences, any psychical damage influences bodily and mental functioning of persons not only directly affected by them, but also their descendants. The linguistic terms applied in the pieces of the Italian poet provoke a discussion of the phenomenon of post-memory. The term, which was proposed by Marianne Hirsch to refer to collective trauma inheritance, has been recently broadened by psychologists to encompass individual memory as well. The fragments written in four language codes (Italian, French, English, and music notation) offer hints to be used in the psycho-emotional analysis of the poet. Additionally, scrutinizing Amelia Rosselli’s nostalgic lyrical pieces, we can discern, by referring to psychological sciences, how the composition-making can constitute an auto-psychotherapy procedure. In terms of interdisciplinarity, the experience of melancholy and nostalgia in Amelia Rosselli’s artistic creativity covers the psychological, social, historical, cultural, political, and artistic areas.

Objectives: The aim of this study is to establish which psychosocial factors at work are related to depression among female white-collar workers in Vilnius. Materials and Methods: The data was collected in a case-control study in 2002-2004. The cases were selected from patients treated at Vilnius mental health centers. The controls were randomly selected from employed Vilnius residents. A descriptive statistic and logistic regression was applied. Results: 3 psychosocial factors and possible confounders within the evaluated model were statistically reliable (model χ²: 44.47, p < 0.05 ). The adjusted odds ratio for uneven work distribution was 2.17 (95% CI: 1.38-3.51, p < 0.005), the odds ratio for possibility to control was 10.81 (95% CI: 2.13-54.71, p < 0.005), and the odds ratio for family esteem was 2.13 (95% CI: 1.01-4.59, p < 0.005). Conclusion: This study suggests that work distribution, possibility to control and family esteem, together with stressful life events and mental health disorders in the family, are related to depression among female white-collar workers.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to describe the available measures of preventing post-stroke depression and their efficacy with regard to psychological interventions. The said affective disorder is often poorly diagnosed for a number of reasons. Also the treatment itself turns sometimes to be inappropriate. It is worth highlighting that post-stroke depression affects the process of recovery of the patient, thus its harmful effect is not limited to a mere depressed mood. Studies describing the measures of prophylaxis of depression after stroke are dominated by those assessing the efficiency of pharmacotherapy. Meta-analyses point to a low efficiency of this type of therapeutic effects as well as to the inconsistency of their outcomes. Other methods of prevention efforts include those of psychological nature which should be divided into different categories, such as: psychotherapy, other unstructured interactions (for example: education, emotional and instrumental support, service of multidisciplinary team, physical exercises) or motivational interviewing. The results show that motivational interviewing is the most effective of all methods. Problem-solving therapy appears to be another effective intervention within the prevention of post-stroke depression. Also a short-term psychosocial-behavioral therapy produces good results. There is a definite and urgent need for more research on this subject that would enable the recommendation of an appropriate form of prophylaxis. The majority of the described studies are characterized by a small number of patients. It seems that different psychotherapeutic approaches that place the individual needs of the patient in the first place are worth further research. Those related to the behavioral approach seems to bring hope for greater efficacy.

Curiosity is a personality trait that is inversely related to depression and positively related to subjective wellbeing. However, the relationship between curiosity and these two outcomes is still unclear which hampers our general understanding of well-being. Based on research within positive psychology that showed character strengths such as curiosity can indirectly decrease depression, we hypothesized that the inverse relationship between curiosity and depression would be mediated by subjective well-being. Two hundred and fifty seven participants, between 18 and 64 years old (M = 24.50, SD = 8.33) completed a web-based survey comprising: The Curiosity and Exploration Inventory - II, Center for Epidemiological Studies - Depression and the Steen Happiness Index. We found that well-being mediated the relationship between curiosity and depression. The results indicate that curious individuals tend to report higher levels of subjective well-being which, in turn, is associated with lower levels of depression. Our findings contribute to the understanding of positive results obtained from clinical samples that underwent positive psychotherapy of depression.

Introduction. Depression is one of the most serious diseases of civilization in recent years. The clinical picture of depression, dominated primarily depressed mood, perceived by patients as a state of depression, resignation, sadness. Quality of life in the perspective of medical science focuses on the phenomena of health and disease. Progress in medicine has extended survival time for patients with various diseases, but there has to be a sufficient measure of efficacy. Improving the quality of life prolongation is therefore an important challenge for modern medicine. Aim. The aim of the study is to analyze aspects of the quality of life of patients with depression, depending on the selected demographic factors Material and methods. The study was conducted among patients mental health. The method of diagnostic survey. The study used a shortened version of the GDS, scale WHOQOL-Bref and a questionnaire survey of his own design. The results were statistically analyzed. Results. Among the respondents, the dominant group were women and people aged 46 to 70 years. Most patients lived in the countryside and had a pouse. The largest group among the respondents were people with secondary education. The results show significant differences in the quality of life assessment domains on sex of patients. Conclusions. Among those diagnosed with depression significantly more women than men evaluate the areas of quality of life. Age does not determine significant quality of life for patients with depression.
Materiał i metody. Badania przeprowadzono wśród pacjentów poradni zdrowia psychicznego. Zastosowano metodę sondażu diagnostycznego. W badaniach wykorzystano skróconą wersję GDS, skalę WHOQOL-Bref a także kwestionariusz ankiety własnej konstrukcji. Wyniki poddano analizie statystycznej. Wyniki.

Introduction: A chronic or recurrent pain and discomfort in the upper abdomen occurs frequently in depressive patients. The pathogenesis of these symptoms is complex and not fully understood. The aim of the study was to estimate the gastric myoelectrical activity in this group of patients. Material and methods: The study group consisted of 90 subjects, including 71 women and 19 men (mean age – 38.0±8.1). Among them three groups were divided: healthy subjects (K, n=30), depressive patients with dyspepsia (group II, n=30) and depressive patients with Helicobacter pylori infection (group III, n=30). All the subjects completed Hamilton Depression Scale and the gastric myoelectrical activity examination with Polygraph–Medtronic A/S (Denmark) was done before and after a liquid meal for 120 minutes. Results: Preprandial normogastria in depressive patients (group II, III) compared to healthy subjects (group K) was lower 79.5±8.1% vs 73.6±8.7% (p<0.01) and 79.5±8.1% vs 68.4±9.9 (p<0.001). The similar differences were recorded during postprandial time. Power ratio scale (PR) was also lower in depressive patients than in healthy subjects: 3.5±0.7 (K), 1.6±0.7 (group II), 1.7±0.8 (group III) – p<0.001, p<0.001 respectively. Conclusions: In depressive patients gastric myoelectrical activity is disturbed and probably causes chronic dyspepsia symptoms.
Wstęp: U chorych z depresją często występują bóle i dyskomfort w nadbrzuszu. Spośród nich wyodrębniono trzy grupy – osoby zdrowe (grupa K, n=30), pacjenci z depresją i dyspepsją (grupa II, n=30), pacjenci z depresją i zakażeniem Helicobacter pylori (grupa III, n=30). U wszystkich oceniono stan emocjonalny z użyciem Skali Depresji Hamiltona, a aktywność mioelektryczną żołądka (Polygraph–Medtronic A/S, Denmark) rejestrowano przez 120 minut przed i po posiłku płynnym. Wyniki: W porównaniu do osób zdrowych (grupa K), u pacjentów z depresją (grupa II i III) odsetek normogastrii przedposiłkowej był niższy; 79,5±8,1% vs 73,6±8,7% (p<0,01) i 79,5±8,1% vs 68,4±9,9 (p<0,001).

Aim: Self-destructiveness involves behaviours whose likely negative effect is mediated by additional factors, and the relationship between behaviour and damage is perceived as probable. The main objective of the research is to evaluate the behaviour of indirect self-destructiveness in patients with symptoms of anxiety and/or depression (compared to the persons without mental disorders-control group). Material and method: Clinical group included 40 patients of the Department of Adult Psychiatry at the Medical University of Lodz – people reporting symptoms of anxiety and/or depressed mood. The control group consisted of people without mental disorders. Polish version of Chronic Self-Destructiveness Scale (CS-DS) adapted by Suchanska and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale – Modified (HADS-M) by Snaith and Zigmond were used. The survey aimed at collecting sociodemographic data. Results: Differences were noticed between the clinical and control group in the following indirect autodestructive behaviours: Poor Health Maintenance, Lack of Planfulness, Personal and Social Neglects, Helplessness and Passiveness. Behaviours in all of those areas were more frequent in the clinical group. There were no significant differences noticed between groups in terms of: Transgression and Risk, alcohol use and smoking. Conclusions: Anxiety and depressive disorders promotes occurring of indirect self destructive behaviours.
Zastosowano polską wersję skali chronicznej autodestruktywności (Chronic Self-Destructiveness Scale, CS-DS) Kelley w adaptacji Suchańskiej oraz Szpitalną Skalę Lęku i Depresji w wersji zmodyfikowanej (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale – Modified, HADS-M) autorstwa Snaitha i Zigmonda. Wyniki: Zaobserwowano różnice między grupą kliniczną a kontrolną w przypadku następujących grup zachowań pośrednio autodestruktywnych: zaniedbania zdrowotne, nieuważność, nieostrożność i brak planowania, zaniedbania osobiste i społeczne, pasywność (bierność).

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to determine whether a link exists between early maladaptive schemas identified by Young et al. and depression in alcoholics. The relationships of schemas with selected alcohol dependence variables and suicidal thoughts in alcoholics were also checked. Material and methods: Seventy-seven alcohol addicts participated in the study – 19 women and 58 men. Young Schema Questionnaire (YSQ-S3), Beck’s Depression Inventory (BDI) and Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (MAST) were used. Results: Based on the results obtained, 16 out of 18 schemas are positively and statistically correlated with depression among alcoholics. The strongest relationships were noted for emotional deprivation, social isolation/alienation and subjugation. Correlations between the schemas and the severity of addiction and the age of drinking initiation were also found. Differences in the intensity of some schemas occurred between people experiencing suicidal thoughts and people without these thoughts. Conclusions: There is a need to consider inclusion therapy focused on changing maladaptive schemas in alcoholics. This is especially true of the schemas of social isolation, emotional deprivation and subjugation. There is also a need for further research in this area.
Dotyczy to zwłaszcza schematu izolacji społecznej, deprywacji emocjonalnej i podporządkowania.

Opis:
Introduction. Endometrial cancer (EC) is the most common gynaecological malignancy in developed countries. Effective treatment of the early stage of the disease is achieved by surgery alone. An increasing number of patients with EC become long-term survivors; therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the quality-of-life (QOL) of EC survivors. Materials and Method. A total of 328 survivors who had completed cancer treatment more than 3 years ago, and had previously completed questionnaires concerning QOL – European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30) and depression – Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II). Patients were grouped into those with surgery alone or surgery with adjuvant radiotherapy. Responses were compared with 284 healthy women who were seen for standard gynaecologic screening examinations. Results. According to the presented results, the QOL of women with EC after surgical treatment was equal to that of healthy women in the control group. Treatment with adjuvant radiotherapy influenced the QOL, with the exception of emotional functioning (p=0.028). No statistically significant differences were found in scores on the BDI-II between groups for the cognitive-affective factor, the somatic factor, or the total sum score. Conclusions. The quality of life in EC survivors approximates that of healthy controls after 3 years post-surgical treatment. Patients treated for early stage EC should be informed about the anticipated good prognosis and the low risk of psychosocial and physical long-term effects. Cancer survivors who are treated by surgery and adjuvant radiotherapy may be especially at risk for emotional functioning problems.

Introduction: Death anxiety, fear of abundance, isolation, stigma of the disease and medication side effects are among the most common sources of anxiety and depression in patients with breast cancer. Purpose: To examine the possible relationship between religiosity, psychological resilience and depression on breast cancer patients. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional design was employed in this study which 152 breast cancer patients participated. Data were collected with the following instruments: Patient Health Questionnaire-2-item scale, Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale 25 and Centrality of Religiosity Scale and a special designed sheet reporting social, demographic and clinical characteristics. Statistical analyses were conducted with the Statistical Package for the Social Science V25. Descriptive statistics such means, and frequencies were calculated and inferential statistics such correlation test, simple and multiple regression analysis were applied. Results: Approximately 1 in 3 patients suffered symptoms of depression while they were reporting moderate religiosity and resilience values. Based on the four-step mediation analysis religiosity was strongly associated with psychological resilience but it was not found to affect directly either depression, but psychological resilience can be a mediator between religiosity and depression. Conclusion: This study supports the notion thatreligiosity and spirituality can have a beneficial influence on health outcomes.

Background: It is well known that advancing age is accompanied by many negative feelings due to the feeling of loneliness and psychological emptiness, which leads to the individual feeling that society does not need him due to his weak physical abilities and thus this, will negatively affect healthy aging. Objective: The study aimed to investigate the effect of the leisure activities on the psychological stress among the elderly during Coronavirus (COVID-19) Outbreak. Design: To achieve this, we used the quasi-experimental approach on a sample consisting of 54, with the average age of (65.4±2.3) years. Divided into two groups 27 as a control group and 27 as the experimental group and this sample was purposively selected. Because of the home quarantine and to reduce face-to-face interaction, we used a questionnaire to measure the psychological stress level by using the Google form. The study tool consisted of 7 paragraphs associated with depression and 6 paragraphs associated with anxiety, finally 6 paragraphs associated with aggression. Before applying the experiment, the psychological stress was measured among the study sample, and then the leisure activities program was sent to the experimental group by the WhatsApp application. The researchers used means, standard deviations, paired and independent sample t-test by using SPSS version 24 with a confidence level of 95% (p<0.05). Results: The results of the study have shown that the level of the psychological stress among both groups came with a high average in the pre-measurement, as well as the anxiety domain that were the most affected in a positive way through leisure activities practicing. Additionally, there were statistically significant differences between the pre and post measurement among experiment group and favor of the post measurement. Conclusion: the leisure activities practicing among the elderly have contributed positively to reducing the level of psychological stress represented by depression, anxiety.

Opis:
There are difficulties to the conventional depressant for achieving separation of scheelite from calcite for the sake of their similar surface properties. The paper reported that a new depressant quinic acid (QA) was used for separating scheelite from calcite. The adsorption experiments, zeta potential experiment, contact angle, FTIR, XPS analysis and crystal chemistry analysis were utilized to known the depression mechanism of selectivity. The results showed that the recovery of calcite decreased drastically after QA added, whereas hardly influenced on scheelite. The tungsten concentrate could reach 66.24% WO3 grade and 89.46% recovery with 1.5×10-4 mol•L-1 QA at pH=9. The surface adsorption quantity of the QA on calcite was much greater than scheelite, which enhanced significantly the hydrophilicity of calcite surface. Due to its negative charge, QA could be adsorbed on the surface of calcite which had positive charge instead of that of scheelite with negative charge. Subsequently, free carboxyl groups of QA could chelated with Ca2+ species on the calcite surface to form stable chemical adsorption in order to prevent the Pb-BHA to form further adsorption on that, so there was no increase significantly on hydrophobicity. However, QA was obviously weak for adsorbing while Pb-BHA which could still be chemically adsorbed on scheelite surface of pre-treated with QA.

Mania is a psychiatric disorder which may occur alternately with depression as a bipolar disorder, or much less often as an individual disease. It might be accompanied by other disorders, i.e. schizophrenia, dementia or withdrawal syndrome. Only a few effective drugs are used for the treatment of mania. Patients suffering from bipolar disorder are treated with mood-stabilizing drugs, administered during the course of the disease, and drugs that are implemented when mania or depression episodes occur. Some studies report effectiveness of anticonvulsant drugs in the cessation of mania, thus in our study we assessed the effectiveness of pregabalin in a mouse model of mania induced by administration of metylphenidate (5 mg/kg; s.c). Pregabalin was tested in the forced swim test (75 mg/kg, 100 mg/kg; i.p.) and the elevated plus maze test (75 mg/kg; i.p.) to assess its antidepressant-like and anxiolytic-like properties, respectively. In the elevated plus maze in MPH-treated mice pregabalin significantly reduced time spent in open arms (p<0.001 vs. MPH-treated control). In the forced swim test MPH compared to vehicle significantly (p<0.001) reduced duration of immobility. In MPH-treated mice pregabalin partially reversed this effect of MPH. This effect was significant only for the dose of 75 mg/ kg (p<0.05). In the rotarod test neither MPH, nor its combination with pregabalin (75 mg/kg; 100 mg/kg) influenced motor coordination of mice at any speed tested. To conclude our study revealed that pregabalin might reverse manic-like action of MPH related to hyperlocomotion, which may indicate for its possible effectiveness in mania episodes.

Introduction and objectives. An increased incidence of depressive disorders observed in recent years in the Polish and world population is a serious health problem. The aim of the study was to compare dietary habits and nutritional status of patients with recurrent depressive disorders, depending on their place of residence. Their impact on selected metabolic parameters was also considered. Materials and method. The study group comprised 96 women and 84 men reporting to the Outpatient Mental Health Clinic at the Department of Psychiatry, Medical University of Bialystok in north-eastern Poland. The average age of the women was 46.7±11.7 years, and of men 47.0±11.3 years. In the quantitative assessmentof diets, 24-hour food recall interviews were conducted. Assessment of the nutritional status of the respondents consisted of anthropometric measurements, body composition analysis and biochemical parameters. Results. It was show that the diets of female urban inhabitants were characterized by a significantly lower energy value and total fat content, compared to their rural counterparts. The food rations of men living in the city had a significantly higher energy value, protein content and total FAT, compared to rural residents. It was also noted that urban residents of both genders were characterized by a lower percentage of body fat, both visceral and subcutaneous (women), and a higher water content than rural residents. Conclusions. The study showed dietary errors in all compared groups, regardless of place of residence, which was reflected in the nutritional status of the respondents. The results also indicated that during the declared change in dietary habits, the treatment of depressive patients should include dietary instructions in order to ensure an optimum supply of nutrients.
