vocabulary
Opis:
This study describes an experiment in vocabulary learning. The vocabulary was presented to students in two different forms, the classical one (a list of vocabulary presented on a paper sheet), and a computer-generated one (to guarantee validity: with the same list as shown on the paper sheet). No other variables have influenced learning. The remembrance of the vocabulary was tested immediately after, one day after and one week after learning. The results: Vocabulary remembrance was strikingly worse when learning from the computer screen in comparison with learning the classical way, from the paper sheet.

This article deals with the best media or media adequate ways to memorize vocabulary. An empirical study is presented in which test persons had to memorize vocabulary in an unknown language in three different ways. Thus, three experimental groups were presented Hungarian vocabulary to be learnt. The first group learnt a vocabulary list from a sheet of paper, the second one from the computer monitor, but without any animation, and the third one from an animated flash file. In the present article, the results of this study are reported and discussed.

Opis:
Video object retrieval is a promising research direction, developing in the recent years, and the current video object retrieval strategies are used for visualizing, digitizing, modeling, and retrieving the objects especially in graphics and in architectural design. The research performed led to the design of proficient video object retrieval techniques. Yet, although, a number of algorithms had been devised for tracking objects, the problems persist in enhancing the performance, for instance – with regard to non-rigid objects. In this review article we provide a detailed survey of 50 research papers presenting the suggested video object retrieval methodologies, based on approaches such as deep learning techniques, graph-based techniques, query-based techniques, feature-based techniques, fuzzybased techniques, machine learning-based techniques, distance metric learning-based technique, and also other ones. Moreover, analysis and discussion are presented concerning the year of publication, employed methodology, evaluation metrics, accuracy range, adopted framework, datasets utilized, and the implementation tool. Finally, the research gaps and issues related to various proposed video object retrieval schemes are presented for guiding the researchers towards improved contributions to the video object retrieval methods.

Opis:
This study investigated foreign language students’ perceptions about their Information and Communication Technology (ICT)-based College English Course (CEC) in China. The research used a five-point Likert-scale questionnaire based on Simsek (2008). A factor analysis confirmed the construct validity of the questionnaire and 6 factors were delineated. 200 non-English majors who responded mentioned that ICT was well integrated into the CEC. They reported that the ICT-based CEC gave them a good environment for independent learning and they were more motivated to learn English as they had more opportunities to communicate, interact and cooperate with other students in English using authentic language in a variety of contexts. They found learning was more effective compared to the traditional learning environment; it provided freer learning environment, less restricted communication, more time flexibility and more self-scheduled study plan ensuring learner-centeredness and learning autonomy.

Opis:
This study investigates the effect of a vlogging project on Malaysian ESL students’ speaking performance in a secondary school. Additionally, the students’ experience and perception of making and using vlogs in their language learning were also investigated. To this end, a mixed-methods approach was adopted and the data was collected from 73 participants. A quasi-experiment was conducted to determine the effect of the vlogging project while a questionnaire and a retrospective self-report were utilised to obtain the participants’ views pertaining to their experience in creating vlogs. The findings indicate statistically significant improvement in the ESL students’ speaking scores. Additionally, the participants viewed the vlogging project positively and perceived it as a student-friendly learning tool which can also promote self-evaluation and function as a source of motivation. Drawing on the findings, ESL teachers should consider the pedagogical benefits of vlogs and incorporate them as an instructional technique in the language classrooms. This study indicates that the use of vlogs warrants further research in order to inform the feasibility and pedagogical impact of using vlogs to enhance students’ speaking skills.

Opis:
The paper presents an example of Instance-Based Learning using a supervised classification method of predicting selected ductile cast iron castings defects. The test used the algorithm of k-nearest neighbours, which was implemented in the authors’ computer application. To ensure its proper work it is necessary to have historical data of casting parameter values registered during casting processes in a foundry (mould sand, pouring process, chemical composition) as well as the percentage share of defective castings (unrepairable casting defects). The result of an algorithm is a report with five most possible scenarios in terms of occurrence of a cast iron casting defects and their quantity and occurrence percentage in the casts series. During the algorithm testing, weights were adjusted for independent variables involved in the dependent variables learning process. The algorithms used to process numerous data sets should be characterized by high efficiency, which should be a priority when designing applications to be implemented in industry. As it turns out in the presented mathematical instance-based learning, the best quality of fit occurs for specific values of accepted weights (set #5) for number k = 5 nearest neighbours and taking into account the search criterion according to “product index”.

Opis:
The article addresses the problem of modern maritime education and training in the perspective of computer technologies development, especially the internet. Computer-based training is being a standard for the maritime industry for almost 25 years, but there is still no unified approach on the use of this teaching method in MET. Authors suggest to open a conversation on harmonization of standards regarding CBT in the industry and wider implementation of this teaching method into STCW training process via a blended learning approach, where theoretical part of the course may be taken online, while the practical part is taken in the training facility.

This study determined the level of assessment of subjects with CBT (Computer-Based-Training) application among marine engineering students of John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University-Molo, Iloilo City. The participants in this study were the randomly selected one hundred and thirty-three (133) marine engineering students of JBLFMU-Molo, Iloilo City who had taken subjects with CBTs. The present study employed quantitative-qualitative research design by Creswell (2013). Results reveal the following: (1) review with CBT or CBTR review is the mostly utilized subject because this is needed in the marine engineering licensure examinations; (2) level of assessment of CBTs is excellent; (3) no significant differences in the assessment of CBTs were found out among marine engineering students as classified according to different variables such as academic performance, students’ classification, type of students, and section.
