Opis:
The aim of this study has been to determine the indirect and direct effects of farmyard manure and sewage sludge composts, produced in the north-eastern part of Poland, on the content of 1 mol HCl⋅dm-3 soluble forms of zinc and copper in soil. In 2004-2007, a field experiment was carried out at the Experimental Station in Bałcyny near Ostróda. The experiment was established on proper grey-brown podzolic soil originating from light boulder clay, which was rich in P, moderately abundant in K and low in Mg. It comprised a four-field crop rotation system (potato, spring barley, winter oilseed rape and winter wheat. The design of the experiment, set up according to the random block method, involved 8 objects (2 x 4): 1) farmyard manure, 2) compost (sewage sludge + straw), 3) dried and granulated sewage sludge, 4) composted sewage sludge. The composts and FYM were introduced to soil once (in 2004) at a rate of 10 t d.m.⋅ha-1 or 2 × 5 d.m.⋅ha-1 (under potato and winter oilseed rape). In 2004, nitrogen in the soil enriched with natural fertilizers was balanced to 150 kg⋅ha-1 according to the N-total content. In 2005, soil cropped with spring barley received only mineral fertilization, whereas winter oilseed rape received the second rate of organic fertilizers (in the series consisting of 2 × 5 d.m.⋅ha-1) and nitrogen was balanced to 120 kg⋅ha-1. In 2006, soil under winter wheat received only mineral fertilization. Prior to the establishment of the experiment, soil, manure and compost samples were taken. Having been averaged, the samples were subjected to determination of their content of Cu and Zn in 1 mol HCl dm-3. The soil, whose reaction was 5.04 in 1 mol HCl dm-3, was moderately abundant in available zinc and low in copper. After four years of the trials, the levels of available forms of copper and zinc in the soil fertilized with sewage sludge composts, compared to the soil enriched with FYM, were higher. In the first and fourth year of the experiment, the content of both elements was found to increase significantly in the objects fertilized with dry, granulated and composted sludge. Sludge composted with straw significantly raised the content of Zn and Cu in the second and third year of the experiment. However, fertilization of grey-brown podzolic soil with sewage sludge did not change its classification according to the abundance of available forms of copper and zinc.
Ostródy, na glebie płowej typowej wytworzonej z gliny lekkiej zwałowej, o wysokiej zawartości P, średniej K i niskiej Mg, przeprowadzono doświadczenie z 4-polowym płodozmianem (ziemniak, jęczmień jary, rzepak ozimy, pszenica ozima). Schemat doświadczenia, założonego metodą losowanych bloków, obejmował 8 obiektów (2x4): 1) obornik, 2) kompost (osad ściekowy+ słoma), 3) osad ściekowy suszony i granulowany, 4) osad ściekowy kompostowany. Przed założeniem doświadczenia pobrano próbki gleby, obornika i kompostów. W próbkach, po uśrednieniu, oznaczono zawartość Cu, Zn w 1 mol HCl⋅dm-3. Gleba o pH=5,04 w 1 mol HCl⋅dm-3 charakteryzowała się średnią zasobnością w przyswajalny cynk i niską w miedź. Po czterech latach badań wzrosła zawartość przyswajalnych form miedzi i cynku w glebie użyźnianej kompostami z osadów ściekowych, w porównaniu z glebą nawożoną obornikiem.

Opis:
Extraction methods are especially important during the stage of preparing the samples to the identification and separation of the elements from environmental samples. Analytes, which are mainly solid organic substances, can be separated from solid materials either by a gas or a solvent. Nevertheless, solvents are still the most popular and the most widely used extractants. Still, the efficiency of extraction depends not only on the particular type of solvent but also on the extraction method. In literature, there are all sorts of assaying processes. Qualitative or quantitative persistent chemical pollutants are among others, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). This research was to test two different organic solvents, ie hexane, dichloromethane and hexane with acetone, as well as different extraction methods in the process of isolating polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from compost originating from municipal wastes.

Opis:
This study was conducted during the two winter seasons (2018/2019&2019/2020) to investigate the effect of NPK and compost fertilizers on the Camelina sativa plant under Egyptian ecology. The fertilizer levels of NPK were 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100%, recommended doses, whereas compost was applied at 6, 8 and 10 m3/fed to investigate the effect of these fertilizers and the interaction of both chemical and organic fertilizers on the vegetative growth, oil yield and oil components percentage, especially Linolenic acid (ω-3). The obtained results indicated that the application of 100% NPK as well as 10 m3 of compost produced the highest mean values of all vegetative characteristics compared to unfertilized plants at both samples in the two growing seasons and the other treatments. On the other hand, the results showed that all NPK treatments, i.e. 25, 50, 75, and 100% NPK significantly increased seed yield (g/plant) as compared to control, the mean values were 3.06, 4.70, 9.09 and 10.20 g/plant compared to 1.84 g/plant, respectively, for the 1st season and 3.11, 4.48, 9.27 & 10.27 g/plant comparing to 1.80 of control for the 2nd season. Compost treatments significantly increased the seed yield; the mean values were 5.10, 5.72, 5.88 and 6.42 g/plant in the 1st season and 5.09, 5.73, 5.99 and 6.32 g/plant in the 2nd season for fertilization with 0, 6, 8 and 10 m3/Fed., respectively. The maximum mean values were obtained by compost at 10 m3/fed. The interaction treatment between 100% NPK and 10 m3/fed showed the maximum mean value of seed yield which recorded 10.51 and 10.78 g/plant for the 1st and 2nd seasons, respectively. In contrast, the lowest values of seed yield were obtained from unfertilized plant which recorded 1.09 and 1.04 g/plant for the 1st and 2nd seasons, respectively. The promising effect of NPK fertilizer on fixed oil % and yield was evident with NPK 100%, 52.53% and 52.83% fixed oil, whereas yield was 408.63 and 413.68 l/fed.), followed by 75% NPK which produced fixed oil percentage and yield 46.82, 46.77% as well as 207.29 and 208.06 l/fed for the first and second season, respectively, compared with other treatments and control. The highest fixed oil percentages and yield (l/fed) were recorded with NPK at 100% and compost at 10 m3/fed during both seasons.

This paper presents the results of studies which aim was to determine the pollution of the water environment for both methods of preparation for the utilization of sewage sludge in agriculture. The study was conducted in 2008-2012 in lysimeters filled with light sandy soil (clayey sand). During the study variants with equal doses of nitrogen in an amount of 20 g . m-2 (15.7 g per one lysimeter) were supplied to the soil in sewage sludge and in the compost made from the same sludge. These variants were used three times for two species of perennial plants: Miscanthus gigantenus i Sida hermaphrodita Rusby. In a variant of sludge soil fertilizing, it was leached into water environment more than 12% of the applied nitrogen over 5 years of research. In case of compost nitrogen leaching was reduced to 8.1-10.0% of the quantity supplied to the soil.

The aim of this paper is to assess the effects of different doses of sewage sludge compost mixed with wheat straw on heavy metal content in Italian ryegrass and in soil. A two year experiment with the Italian ryegrass was set up in autumn 2012. The experimental design consisted of a control plot, a plot with NPK fertiliser and three plots with three different doses of municipal sewage sludge compost (5, 10 and 15 Mg of fresh matter·ha-1). Those different compost doses contained the amounts of Nitrogen equivalent to 60, 120 and 180 kg·N.ha-1. The two lower doses of compost were supplemented with nitrogen fertiliser so that the amount of this chemical element introduced to the soil of all plots with compost stood at 180 kg·ha-1. During 2013 and 2014 seasons the grass was cut three times a year after about a 30-day growing period. After dry mineralisation, the content of Zn, Cu, Ni, Pb and Cd in the plant samples was measured with the ICP-AES method. The fertilisers applied significantly diversified the content of chemical elements in the grass and in the soil. The highest dose of compost resulted in the highest concentration of Zn, Cu and Cd in the grass while the highest concentration of Ni and Pb was in the soil and the grass from the plot where the mid dose of compost had been applied. Cadmium concentration in the soil was the highest in the plot where the mid dose was applied. The experiment proved that compost made with sewage sludge and wheat straw is beneficial for plants.

Opis:
The research was conducted to investigate the efficiency and possibilities of advanced oxidation process based on ozone-hydrogen peroxide. The process was used as a post-treatment step of composting leachate utilisation. The leachate samples were collected from a typical composting plant with the aerobic biological treatment system. The samples were conditioned in a “ozone reactor” without dilution. The effectiveness of the treatment process was measured by pH values (4.0-7.0), H2O2 concentrations (0.5-4.0 g∙dm-3), ozone doses (0.5-1.5 g∙h-1) and reaction times (0-10 min). The highest removal efficiencies achieved were 85% and 92% for chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), respectively. The optimum process parameters occurred at pH 5.0, 2.0 g∙dm-3 concentration of H2O2, and 0.75 g∙h-1 of ozone dose. The optimal reaction time was 3 min. The O3/ H2O2 advanced oxidation process was found to oxidize COD and BOD5 of the composting leachate. The oxidation reaction can be used as a feasible technique for composting leachate treatment.

Zagospodarowanie osadów ściekowych to integralna część procesu oczyszczania ścieków. Substancje humusowe wprowadzone do gleby z kompostem poprawiają jej urodzajność. Należy stwierdzić, iż kompostowanie to proces złożony, obejmujący szereg licznych procesów biochemicznych, chemicznych i fizycznych zachodzących w obecności bakterii aerobowych.
The paper presents investigations on quality of composts produced in chosen waste water treatment plants located in north eastern part of Poland. The project was carried out during 2003-2010 with sewage sludge (municipal and dairy) with different concentration of physical and chemical parameters. Different materials as dust saw, straw and chips were used as a components for low cost composting methods. Basic technological parameters of sewage sludge composting in four WWTPs located in Zambrow, Sokolka, Nowa Wies Elcka and Kolno were presented. Also parameters from research installations located in Koryciny Rudka Forestry and Zambrow were presented. Evaluation of final composts parameters were presented: micro and macro elements, general and available forms, weight and sieve analysis. Obtained results of composts composition were compared also with regulation rules for organic fertilizers and composts. Common and different properties of composts due to municipal and dairy sludge and structural materials were highlighted. Characteristic parameters of verrmicompost produced with Californian worms were presented in the paper. Analyses performed in Department of Technology in Engineering and Environment Protection, Technical University in Bialystok proved high quality of organic fertilizers (composts and vermicomposts). Usefulness of low cost methods for sewage sludge treatment and utilization and basic parameters to obtain the best final product were shown. The product from Sokolka, Zambrow and Nowa Wies Elcka obtained special certificate. The final product can be used widely in agriculture, forestry and for other natural purposes.

Opis:
The application of fertilizers based on sewage sludge significantly affects the formation of the nitrogen fund of sod-podzolic soil, as well as changes in the content of mobile compounds of phosphorus and potassium exchange. The application of such fertilizer under Jerusalem artichoke has a positive effect on the nitrogen content of alkaline hydrolyzed compounds, in particular on increasing the content of mineral and alkaline hydrolyzed nitrogen fractions. The application of sewage sludge at a dose of 20–40 t/ha and the appropriate compensatory dose of mineral fertilizers at the rate of N90P90K90 helps to increase the content of ammonium nitrogen compounds from 16 to 20–22 mg/kg of soil in the upper (0–20 cm) layer – 28% prevails over the control variant, as well as the content of nitrate nitrogen compounds in the layer 0–40 cm from 1.70 to 2.52–2.64 mg/kg of soil. The ratio of the content of alkaline hydrolyzed nitrogen compounds to the nitrogen content of mineral compounds in the experimental conditions changes insignificantly, which indirectly indicates a relatively stable value of this indicator, which changes little under the influence of fertilizers. The application of sewage sludge as a fertilizer significantly affects the change in the content of mobile phosphorus compounds and potassium exchange compounds in the upper (0–40 cm) layer of the soil. However, from a depth of 60 cm, their content decreases sharply and approaches the initial values of the control version. Depending on the application of fertilizers, the indicators of the coefficient of concentration of macronutrients in the soil change significantly, which reflects the ratio of the content of the element in the soil to its content in the control variant. As the rate of sewage sludge increases, the element concentration coefficient increases from 1.27 in the variant with the application of only mineral fertilizers to 2.36 for potassium and for phosphorus – from 1.02 to 1.31. There is a close correlation between the content of phosphorus and potassium in the soil and the coefficients of their concentration. This relationship reflects the multiple coefficient of determination, which for phosphorus and potassium is R2 = 0.69 and R2 = 0.90, respectively. The use of fertilizers in the form of compost with sewage sludge and straw of cereals causes similar trends as the introduction of uncomposted sewage sludge. However, this effect has less radical impact with lower absolute nutrient content compared to the introduction of fresh sewage sludge. The application of sewage sludge in the form of compost and uncomposted form contributes to a significant increase in the content of macronutrients in the soil, providing an improvement in the mineral nutrition of cultivated plants, including Jerusalem artichokes.

The lysimeters were planted with Miscanthus giganteus, which is an energy plant with a high demand for water and nutrients. The amount of leaching of mineral nitrogen forms was determined on the basis of measured volumes of leachates from the soil and volumes of ammonium nitrogen (N-NH4) and nitrate nitrogen (N-NO3) contained in them. The research results showed a significant increase in the average content of mineral nitrogen forms in the effluents from the fertilized soil (S - 6.8 mg-dm-3 of N-NO3 and 0.3 mg-dm-3 of N-NH4, C - 7.8 mg-dm-3 of N-NO3 and 0.4 mg-dm-3 of N-NH4), compared to their concentrations in the leachates from non-fertilized soil (Z - 2.1 mg-dm-3 of N-NO3 and 0.2 mg-dm-3 of N-NH4). The content of mineral forms of nitrogen, in particular N-NO3, were similar in both fertilization variants. The lowest concentrations of mineral nitrogen in the leachates occurred in the third and fourth year after planting Miscanthus giganteus, when it entered the period of the highest yield. In the fifth year, due to a cold, snowless winter, there was a weakened growth of plants, which resulted in an increase in the concentration of mineral nitrogen in the leachates from the fertilized soil. It follows that in addition to the intensity of precipitation, the collection of this component by plants primarily influences nitrogen leaching from the soil. The general amount of mineral nitrogen leached from the soil was not large and amounted Z - 2.5 kg-m-2, S - 6.7 kg-m-2, C - 6.4 kg-m-2. This testifies to the intense collection of this form of nitrogen by Miscanthus giganteus.

Opis:
The experiment consisted in monitoring the count of moulds and three selected Trichoderma sp. isolates (T1-Trichoderma atroviride, T2-Trichoderma harzianum, T3-Trichoderma harzianum) in vegetable (onion and tomato) waste composted with additives (straw, pig manure). Additionally, the aim of the study was to determine the type of interaction occurring between autochthonous fungi isolated from composts after the end of the thermophilic phase and Trichoderma sp. strains applied in the experiment. Number of microorganisms was determined by the plate method, next the identification was confirmed. The rating scale developed by Mańka was used to determine the type of interactions occurring between microorganisms. The greatest count of moulds in onion waste composts was noted in the object which had simultaneously been inoculated with two strains T1-T. atroviride and T3-T. harzianum. The greatest count of moulds was noted in the tomato waste composts inoculated with T2-T. harzianum strain. Microscope identification revealed that Penicillum sp., Rhizopus sp., Alternaria sp. and Mucor sp. strains were predominant in onion waste composts. In tomato waste composts Penicillium was the predominant genus, followed by Rhizopus. The test of antagonism revealed the inhibitory effect of Trichoderma isolates on most autochthonous strains of moulds. Tomato waste composts proved to be better substrates for the growth and development of Trichoderma sp. isolates. The results of the study show that vegetable waste can be used in agriculture as carriers of antagonistic microorganisms.

Opis:
This study presented investigation results of temperature and organic master changes during two stages composting process. The feedstock components were dewaterednot digested sewage sludge and rape straw as a structural material. The aim of investigation concerned determination of relationship between time of composting duration in rotating rector (125 m3 volume) and time of stabilization of compost in periodically browsed windrows. Five cycles with different time of feedstock retention were monitored: 7, 10, 14, 18 and 21 days. The second stage of composting in all cycles lasted five months. The results show that longer compost retention in reactor effectively reduce time needed for compost stabilization. Results presented in this paper are a part of investigations which have on aim determination of relationship between duration time of two phases of composting in two stage systems. Changes of both, temperature and content of organic substances durin the process, are one of many parameters which describe process of compost stabilisation [3, 6, 7]. Conducted analysis of achieved results allows to state that longer retention time of feedstock in the reactor causes shorter period of stabilisation. The basis of such conclusion is character of changes of determined physical parameters and interpretation of calculated gradients of organic substances. Changes of both parameters were interpreter in the context of compost stability, which is not synonymous with achieving its maturity. It is hard to conclude, that 37 days of composting, with assumption of 21 days of retention of feedstock in the reactor (fig. 1 - 21 days cycle), assures gaining mature compost. In this regard examinations also included determinations of other physicochemical parameters, including so-called humification index. Those results will be the content of next papers in the Annual Set of Environment Protection.

Opis:
A field experiment was carried out at the Experimental Farm of SEKEM Company in Bilbes, Sharqia Governorate, Egypt during the 2019 season, in order to study the effect of adding compost tea and humic acid on the growth and active ingredient of the chive (Allium schoenoprasum L.) plant. Chive seeds were sown in nursery in August, two months later seedlings were transplanted to permanent soil. The chive plants received two organic fertilizers: the first one was compost tea (0, 100 and 200 ml/L) as main plot, and the second one was humic acid (0, 2 and 4 g/L) as sub plot. The two fertilizers were sprayed twice, 45 and 75 days after sowing. The results revealed that: the applied compost tea significantly increased the growth and yield characteristics as well as oil percentage and yield, compared with untreated plants. The plants treated with compost tea at 200 ml / L produced the maximum mean values of plant height, fresh and dry weights of herb, as well as essential oil yield. However, humic acid at 4 g /L recorded the highest mean values of plant height, fresh and dry weights of herb. On the other hand, humic acid at 2 g/L gave the highest values of essential oil yield. Moreover, the interaction treatments had a significant effect on all traits under study. Thirty compounds of Chive essential oil (EO) were identified by GC-MS analysis, representing from 65.07 to 93.29% of the total EO. The main compounds found were dipropyl disulfide (12.8–35.4%), dipropyl trisulfide (12.9–30.05%), methyl propyl trisulfide (3.80–9.03%) and 1-propenyl propyl disulfide (1.56–10%). The highest amounts of dipropyl disulfide and 1-propenyl propyl disulfide were detected with humic acid at 4 g/L treatment. The treatment of compost tea at 200 ml/L + humic acid at 2 g/L caused the greatest accumulation of dipropyl trisulfide which recorded 30.05%, while the greatest values of methyl propyl trisulfide (9.03%) were recorded as a result of tea compost at 100 ml/L.
