The Magic Toyshop (1967), Angela Carter’s second novel, is the story of a young middle-class English girl –Melanie, who with her brother and sister has to move to London and live with her uncle after the death of her parents in an accident. Uncle Philips functions as the primordial father in the household and does not tolerate any digression or transgression from the Law. This paper aims to offer a Lacanian analysis of The Magic Toyshop by focusing on the major polarity that stands out in the novel around which all the narrative is structured: Desire and Law.

Generał Omar Torrijos Herrera doszedł do władzy pół roku po zamachu stanu z 1969 r. Rządził przez około 12 lat, aż do swej śmierci w 1981 r. W znacznym stopniu przyczynił się do osiągnięcia największego sukcesu w polityce zagranicznej Panamy, od początku powsta-nia tego państwa (1903 r.), jakim było zawarcie (1977 r.) nowych traktatów: o Kanale Panam-skim oraz o trwałej neutralności i funkcjonowaniu Kanału. Z chwilą wejścia w życie Traktatu o Kanale Panamskim utraciły moc wszystkie dotychczasowe umowy, w tym najważniejsze: z 1903 r., 1936 r. i 1955 r. Pierwszy z układów obowiązywał do 31grudnia 1999 r. Drugi został zawarty na czas nieoznaczony i reguluje współczesny status prawnomiędzynarodowy Kanału. Dzięki tym układom Panama odzyskała władanie suwerenne formalne i efektywne nad całym swym terytorium: nad dawną Strefą Kanału, Kanałem Panamskim i instalacjami wojskowymi. Panama przejęła odpowiedzialność za utrzymanie i funkcjonowanie Kanału i udostępniania go na zasadach otwartości dla żeglugi morskiej. Kilkuletni okres negocjacji przebiegał w trudnych warunkach. Dyplomacji panamskiej udało się uzyskać dla swych starań liczące się poparcie społeczności międzynarodowej, w tym ONZ i OPA. Ważną okolicznością była także skłonność administracji Cartera do zawarcia satysfakcjonujących obie strony traktatów i uregulowania trudnych stosunków z Panamą. Z perspektywy czasu należy uznać zawarcie układów Torrijos-Carter za największy sukces dyplomatyczny Panamy, o ważnych skutkach dla gospodarki tego kraju i żeglugi morskiej. Po upływie kilkudziesięciu lat od tamtych wydarzeń, ocena ta pozo-staje w pełni aktualna.
General Omar Torrijos Herrera came to power roughly six months after the 1968 Panamanian coup d'état. He remained in office for 12 years until his death in 1981. Torrijos played a major role in achieving the greatest success in Panama’s foreign policy since its independence in 1903 - the negotiation, signature (1977) and entry into force (1979) of the Panama Canal Treaty and the Treaty Concerning the Permanent Neutrality and Operation of the Panama Canal (called the Torrijos-Carter Treaties). From the moment the Panama Canal Treaty entered into force all previous agreements, including those from 1903, 1936 and 1955, were rendered void. The Canal Treaty expired on December 31st 1999 but the Neutrality Treaty remains valid for an unspecified period of time and regulates the modern international legal status of the Panama Canal. Under those two treaties Panama regained its sovereign, formal as well as effective, authority over the whole of its territory, including the old Canal Zone, the Panama Canal and neighboring military installations. Panama took over responsibility for the maintenance and functioning of the Canal and it extends access to it based on the principle of freedom of maritime navigation. The treaty negotiation period lasted for several years and was conducted in difficult conditions. Panamanian diplomacy managed to acquire sizeable support for its efforts in the international community, including the UN and OAS. The US administration at the time – the Carter administration – was inclined to negotiate a mutually satisfactory treaty and to regulate its complicated relations with Panama. From a historical perspective it must be stressed that the Torrijos-Carter treaties should be considered as Panama’s biggest diplomatic success, with crucial consequences for its economy and sea shipping. After several dozen years from those events, that assessment remains accurate.

The objective of this work is to investigate the influence of slotted air gap constructive parameters on magnetic flux density of rotating machines. For this purpose, different approaches were used to solve the air gap field diagram using finite element method and the magnetic field distribution uniformity was evaluated by Carter's factor calculation on two-dimensional and three-dimensional models. Sensitivity analysis of slot constructive parameters was performed and results show that slot geometry modifies the magnetic flux on air gap and shifts the air gap magnetic equipotential midline of double slotted machines. Finally, minimization of Carter’s factor on two-dimensional model presents an optimized slot geometry with a near uniform magnetic flux density distribution.

Artykuł poświęcony jest dialogowi powieści Angeli Carter z poezją Baudelaire’a. Odniesienia do twórczości Baudelaire’a są rozproszone w tekstach Carter, fragmenty jego wierszy pojawiają się u niej w formie prozatorskiej. Obrazy z wiersza „Spleen (Jestem jak król...)” służą Carter jako punkt odniesienia dla związków między bohaterami jej powieści, natomiast Baudelaire’a poetyckie przedstawienie przedmiotów i krajobrazów znajduje u odbicie w jej opisach rzeczywistości apokaliptycznej. Co więcej, ton pewnych ustępów z Heroes and Villains i The Passion of New Eve odzwierciedla charakterystyczny dla poezji dekadenckiej nastrój smutku i zagrożenia. Umieszczone w nowym kontekście prozy postmodernistycznej, styl, obrazowanie oraz koncepcje rozwinięte przez Baudelaire’a są jednocześnie komentarzem do fikcyjnych światów Carter, jak i przedmiotem reinterpretacji, a nawet parodii. Reinterpretacja poezji Baudelaire’a splata się u Carter z krytyką koncepcji mitu. Podobnie jak Roland Barthes, Carter postrzega mit jako konstrukt podporządkowujący fakty ideologii. Baudelaire’owski symbol spleenu staje się u Carter główną, wszechogarniającą koncepcją podważającą autorytet fałszywego mitu.

The article offers a phonosemantic analysis of Angela Carter’s “The Bloody Chamber.” The phonosemantic investigation has been based on the corpus of nineteen relevant sound-related descriptions of the sea. Although most excerpts identified contain aural metaphors and are not phonologically iconic per se, there seem to exist at least three fragments which are particularly interesting from a phonosemantic point of view. Most notably, phonaesthemes /gl/, /l/, /r/ have been found to carry substantial meaning contributing to the overall interpretation of the story in question. Accounting for the inevitable subjectivity concerning iconicity, and in this case phonological iconicity, a few theories are presented in order to support the author’s reading of each phonaestheme’s contextual significance. The paper briefly reviews the chronological development of the field of phonosemantics and then combines the aural images theory (proposed by Richard Rhodes) with the “aural semiotic process” theory (the term coined by the author). Each analysis is further supplemented with scholarly views on respective phonaesthemes. On the whole, the paper does not aim to polemicize with the well-established definition of a phoneme and its generally accepted arbitrariness. Nevertheless, it has been observed that a speculative phonosemantic analysis of a literary work may yield noteworthy results.

In this article we investigate the latest developments on life expectancy modeling. We review some mortality projection stochastic models and their assumptions, and assess their impact on projections of future life expectancy for selected countries in the EU. More specifically, using the age- and sex-specific data of 20 countries, we compare the point projection accuracy and bias of six principal component methods for the projection of mortality rates and life expectancy. The six methods are variants and extensions of the Lee-Carter method. Based on one-step projection errors, the Renshaw and Haberman method provides the most accurate point projections of male mortality rates and the method is the least biased. The Quadratic CBD model with the cohort effects method performs the best for female mortality. While all methods rather underestimate variability in mortality rates and life expectancy, the Renshaw and Haberman method is the most accurate.

Presented topic includes following issues: 1) hidden dictatorship of the attitudes of ‘nasty people’ (‘diminishers’) and its influence on social relations; 2) strategies of depreciation that are used by ‘nasty people” (sowing incertitude, projections, generalizations, adjudications, psycho manipulations, hidden attacks, conflicting signals, provocations, creating illusory situations without exit); 3) verbal and extraverbal manifestations of the archetypes of ‘tormentor/victim’, ‘hunter/ hunted’, ‘attack/escape’ within the activity of ‘nasty people’; 4) long-term violation of the rules of symbolic interactionism by ‘diminishers’. In terms of methodological contexts there are taken mainly concepts of Jay Carter, Eric Berne, Herbert Blumer and Jean Baudrillard. Among historical contexts there is reference to the concept of neurotic personality (Freud, Horney) within the anthropological framework of seduction attitudes and communication play of evident/hidden. The analysis is proceeded on a set of artifacts that constitute oppressive ‘daily practices’.

In the paper a new recursive approach to the mortality forecasting is proposed based on the well-known Lee-Carter stochastic model. The standard Lee- -Carter method and its modified version are presented and compared using mortality data for Poland in the time period 1990-2007. The results obtained indicate that the recursive approach gives more accurate forecasts in terms of the mean squared error. Stochastic forecasts of age-specific death rates are also used to predict death prob- abilities and life expectancy being the main parameters of the life-tables. As an example, future life-tables for 2020 are calculated. Applications of Lee-Carter methodology in pension annuity calculations are presented.

Zmiany geometrii kości spowodowane rozwojem osteoartrozy (OA) dotyczą coraz szerszej populacji. Skomplikowany przebieg choroby wymaga prowadzenia dokładniejszych badań mechanizmów powstawania choroby. W pracy przeprowadzono analizę numeryczną przebudowy tkanki gąbczastej kości udowej według dwóch modeli przebudowy (model Tsuboty oraz model Cartera) w zależności od stadium rozwoju choroby zwyrodnieniowej. Pokazano wpływ zmian geometrii nasady na rozkład beleczek kostnych w chorobie zwyrodnieniowej.
Changes in bone geometry caused by development of osteoarthritis (OA) affect more and more people. The complicated course of the disease necessitates a closer studies of mechanisms of the disease. In the paper numerical analysis of remodeling of femur spongy tissue was carried out. Two models of reconstruction were used (Tsubota model and Carter model) depending on the stage of development of osteoarthritis. Impact of changes in geometry of epiphysis on the distribution of trabecular bone in osteoarthritis were analyzed.

Based on the Deictic Shift Theory as adopted by cognitive poetics (Stockwell 2002), this paper offers an account of fear generating mechanisms involving spatial, temporal, perceptual, relational and compositional deictic shifts in Angela Carter’s The Bloody Chamber. Focusing on the ways the reader gets involved in the terrifying story of Carter’s protagonist, the paper uncovers the complex mechanism of the “production of horror” in the text.

This article presents the methodology of stochastic modeling mortality on the example of the models: Lee-Carter, Renshaw-Haberman and Plat. As a result of calcula-tions, estimated model parameters describing the level of mortality in the Polish popula-tion have been obtained. Based on the estimated models predictions of life expectancy in Poland have been made.
