Opis:
The purpose of this paper is to present a two-step survey method of commuting to work and its main results on the example of the city of Bialystok. The survey has numerous methodological limitations and is very complex. The authors compare the range of influence of the city in 1983-2005 and describe the structure of daily commuting to work. Despite a number of methodological assumptions, the presented method seems to be a valuable tool for studying daily journeys to work, especially since there are no detailed data related to this issue.

Praca przedstawia wyniki analiz zmian dystansów podróży do pracy mieszkańców obszarów zurbanizowanych i wiejskich wynikających ze spisów dojazdów publikowanych przez GUS dla roku 2006 i 2011. Badania różnic w dystansach dojazdów do pracy dokonano w analizie porównawczej danych z roku 2006 i 2011. Dystanse dojazdów do pracy obliczono w kilometrach po sieci dróg kołowych w stanie na rok 2006 i 2011. Badania przeprowadzono dla gmin dolnośląskich rozpatrywanych jako rejony źródłowe, podzielone na kategorie wg typologii funkcjonalnej gmin Bańskiego.
The paper presents the results of comparative analysis of differences in commuting distances for residents of urban and rural areas, respectively, based on commuting times data published by the Central Statistical Office for the years 2006 and 2011. The calculation of commuting distances was done using road network data for 2006 and 2011 and focusing on the communes of Lower Silesia categorised as origin areas according to the functional typology of communes by Bański.

The most common form of mobility associated with the labor market, and also the most desirable for the region development, is the willingness to work outside the place of residence. The tendency of commuting to work shows flexibility and ability to adapt to conditions on the labor market. The aim of this article is the analysis of workers mobility in Poland and Wielkopolska based on data about commuting to work in 2006. A detailed analysis has been prepared based on Jarocin district in 2006 and 2010. The analysis showed that most of the people commuted to work in 2006 in districts located near larger cities and urban areas. They were mostly district towns and cities with district towns which were the central places of the regions. The intensity and different direction of commuting to work increased in Jarocin district in the years 2006-2010.

Aim/purpose – The conceptualization of the estimation of spatial dysfunctionality costs. Design/methodology/approach – An innovative method of estimating costs due to spatial dysfunctionality was proposed, including costs directly incurred and the time lost. Findings – A modern system of integrated planning requires costs projections that justify the necessary changes in space and convince the public and competently independent territorial authorities in the metropolis to take them accordingly. The dysfunctionality of space exposes a society to high costs. On the example of the Cracow Metropolitan Area, costs only from commuting to work amount to PLN 114.7 billion (2018-2030). Research implications/limitations – The results of research indicate the geographical directions in which the investments of public authorities operating in the metropolitan area should concentrate. For the accuracy of the projections presented, it would be essential to increase the frequency and scope of Central Statistical Office research on commuting to work. Originality/value/contribution – The presented study is part of a few Polish studies in the field of estimating the costs of spatial phenomena – especially in terms of mobility costs. The proposed method of the research attempts to fill the gap in estimating the costs of commuting by taking into account the costs of car amortization. Thus far, research in the field of travel costs has focused merely on fuel costs.

The author has dealt with a role of the small city of Kuřim (population ca. 11,000) in the suburban zone of Brno. Based on statistical data and field research, this small towns was analysed with its own activities in jobs and services to compare it with suburbanized villages almost completely reliant on commuting to the main city. Kuřim is a subordinated job centre and junction of the public transport distributing transport flows on the north-western fringe of Brno, including mutual commuting between Brno and Kuřim. Some indices like unemployment rate or education structure are expressively better at Kuřim than in Brno. On the other side, a poorer social infrastructure (in comparison with other small towns of similar size) signalizes weak central role of suburbanized small town in this sphere – except of some administrative activities. Possible losing of their own identity in view to proximity of Brno is another important factor for suburban small towns. The intensive traffic puts high demands on the road network which sometimes lags behind the population development. Future development is unclear. Kuřim grows due to the natural increase (as a consequence of earlier young families inflow), whereas the construction of flats and further immigration have been almost stopped during the economic crisis.

In the article the author presents the analysis of persona! commuting vehicles produced nowadays. The analysis comprises their purposes, functionality, comfort and construction solution of the following elements: drive and sleering system, suspension and batteries. The evolution of a vehicle regarding the space necessary for its manoeuvres and parking is the essential parameter of the analysis. The concept of a city vehicle worked out at the Cracow University of Technology is presented in the further part of the article. The vehicle that has been constructed belongs to L6e category. In the article two concepts of such vehicle are presented - a vehicle for a single person and "a tandem " type of vehicle for two persons. The result of introductory tests of a function model worked out on the basis of a concept model is also presented. The function of the frame and its shape is to make possible for the front of vehicle to enter the back of the other one. Construction solution of this type also reduced the space necessary for parking. Two concepts of front suspension system - rotation axle and suspension with swivel axle were evaluated. Manoeuvrability and stability of rectilinear of rectilinear motion were taken into account. The results that were obtained make drawing conclusion referring to further development of such vehicle possible.

Let (ƒt)t∈R be a measurable iteration group on an open interval I. Under some conditions, we prove that the inequalies g o ƒa ≤ ƒa o g and g o ƒb ≤ ƒb o g for some a, b ∈ R imply that g must belong to the iteration group. Some weak conditions under which two iteration groups have to consist of the same elements are given. An extension theorem of a local solution of a simultaneous system of iterative linear functional equations is presented and applied to prove that, under some conditions, if a function g commutes in a neighbourhood of ƒ with two suitably chosen elements ƒa and ƒb of an iteration group of ƒ then, in this neighbourhood, g coincides with an element of the iteration group. Some weak conditions ensuring equality of iteration groups are considered.

Over the past two and a half decades, the transition from a centralised to a market economy has affected Romania’s spatial configuration by re-widening the gap between cores and peripheries at a regional scale. Through a statistical analysis carried out for the North-West Region (NUTS 2), my contribution focuses on one of the mechanisms interrelated with peripheralisation, namely territorial mobility. The aim is twofold. First, to show how increasing core-periphery disparities impact mobility flows by offering different levels of structural (dis)advantages. Second, to exemplify how various social groups can influence these (dis)advantages by choosing their place of residence and work.

This paper explores the role of the built environment and socio-economic drivers in shaping the modal share of commuting. For this, we have identified through our literature review 67 potential variables categorised into two groups; the built environment and the households’ socio-economic characteristics. We have considered the city of Djelfa as a case study and used the questionnaire as a data collection tool. The questionnaire processing of the 700 questionnaires provided to the households allowed us to select 184 questionnaires for our analysis. The sensitivity analysis protocol is designed for two stages; (i) an exploratory stage, conducted by principal component analysis and bivariate correlation analysis; (ii) and a confirmatory stage conducted by a path analysis. The first step allowed us to hypothesise several causal pathways that could explain, directly or indirectly, the modal share of commuting. The results of the path analysis show that the modal shares of walking, private car and public transit are controlled by 13, 16 and 12 explanatory variables, respectively. Overall, the socio-economic characteristics of households discourage walking and transit use, and encourage private car commuting. On the other hand, the variables identified in this paper related to the built environment discourage walking, but encourage the use of public transit rather than private cars for commuting.

Objectives: The aim of the study was to assess physical activity (PA) level in a representative sample of Polish adults.Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional analysis was performed among 2413 randomly selected individuals (51.5% women) aged 18-79 years, who participated in the Nationwide Study of Occurrence of Risk Factors of Cardiovascular Diseases NATPOL 2011 (March-July 2011). The study procedures consisted of a questionnaire as well as of anthropometric, blood pressure and biochemical measurements. Leisure-time, occupational and commuting PA were assessed by the use of a questionnaire interview. Results: About 48.2% of adults do exercise for at least 30 minutes on most days of a week. About 11% of the respondents declare a sedentary lifestyle. About 26.5% of working population report hard physical work, while sedentary work is reported by 47.6% of the employed participants. Active commuting is declared by 27.3% of working/studying population. About 47.2%, 36.6%, and 15.3% spend < 15, 15-30, and > 30 min per day, respectively, on this kind of PA. Conclusions: PA level of more than half of Polish adults is still not satisfactory. Promotion of an active lifestyle should concern mainly leisure-time and commuting PA with paying special attention to substantial differences in various socio-demographic groups.

The debate about exurbanites and exurbs has ever been an Anglo-American phenomenon. Due to the limitless space for growth and the individual preferences of living in single-family homes, the exurban census tracts were the fastest growing urban type in the USA for several decades. The increase in highway infrastructure lead to an auto-centric development of land and an ongoing urban sprawl in search for natural amenities and affordable housing. This was not the case in Europe for a long time as Europeans preferred to live closer to the place of work and the historically grown structures of the urban development. However, after the COVID-19 pandemic and the restructuring of a new office culture with remote work as the new condition and growing preferences for more living space and green amenities, exurbs could also evolve in the European context. In this investigation, the authors try to identify exurbs in the German context based on a multi-criteria analysis. We find that they are mostly located in the east and north of Germany around Hamburg and Berlin, and to a minor extent to the west and south of Germany. While there has not been a significant increase of exurbs in the past years, the question remains whether the COVID-19 pandemic has influenced the exurbanisation and the related issues to a sustainable urban development according to SDG 11. Further research on the characteristics of exurbs is needed to provide additional policy recommendations and monitor the development of potential exurbs in the future.

Celem artykułu jest wskazanie roli dojazdów do pracy i szkół jako ważnego identyfikatora powiązań przestrzenno-funkcjonalnych, które zachodzą pomiędzy wielkimi ośrodkami miejskimi a jednostkami gminnymi stanowiącymi ich bezpośrednie zaplecze. W pierwszej części pracy dokonano przeglądu literatury oraz doświadczeń krajowych i zagranicznych w aspekcie badań dojazdów do miejsc pracy i nauki. Przedstawione zostały również źródła danych oraz metody badawcze. W części empirycznej autorzy przytoczyli wyniki badań zasięgów oddziaływania miasta Poznania jako ośrodka szkolnictwa ponadgimnazjalnego i dojazdów do pracy. Badania te zostały przeprowadzone na potrzeby projektu delimitacji poznańskiego obszaru metropolitalnego, który został zrealizowany przez zespół Centrum Badań Metropolitalnych UAM w Poznaniu na zlecenie Stowarzyszenia Metropolia Poznań.
The aim of this article is to identify the role of commuting to work and school as an important indicator of functional spatial relations between the large cities and their urbon zone. The article has been prepared in an attempt to recognize the scale and directions of daily migration to work and schools in the agglomeration of Poznań. The first part of paper presents the literature and the experience of national and international research of commuting. Through extensive research, presented in this article, it was possible to determine the zones of strong and weak interactions with Poznań city.

Skuteczne zarządzanie i planowanie rozwoju miast wymaga uwzględniania coraz mocniejszych powiązań pomiędzy miastami i ich zapleczem. Obecne tendencje sprawiają, że nie można spoglądać na miasta jako odrębne jednostki funkcjonalne. Część funkcji miasta, przekracza bowiem jego granice administracyjne. W związku z tym wokół niemal każdego miasta tworzy się strefa z gęstymi powiązaniami, która wraz z miastem tworzy funkcjonalny obszar miejski. Oddziaływanie każdego miasta jest wprost proporcjonalne do jego wielkości i rangi, natomiast odwrotnie proporcjonalne do odległości. Powiązania między miastem i jego otoczeniem określane są za pomocą powiązań funkcjonalnych, tj. dojazdów do pracy, edukacji, usług itp. Te przemieszczenia wahadłowe nabierają coraz większego znaczenia praktycznego, przy tworzeniu planów zagospodarowania przestrzennego, polityk transportowych i strategii mobilności. Autorka ukazuje przestrzenne zróżnicowanie miast średniej wielkości w Polsce pod względem wielkości dojazdów do pracy. Badanie opiera się na miernikach określających migracje wahadłowe były to: współczynniki wyjazdów, przyjazdów, salda przepływów oraz ilorazu przepływów. Polacy są mobilnym narodem. Co czwarty mieszkaniec Polski dojeżdża do pracy poza gminę swojego zamieszkania. Miasta średnie pozostają w cieniu dużych pod względem atrakcyjności ich rynków pracy. Największe przepływy ludności z miast średniej wielkości notuje się w granicach największych aglomeracji, na co zasadniczy wpływ ma bliskość wielu miast oraz dogodne połączenia między nimi. Jednostki te odznaczają się ujemnym saldem przepływów, podczas gdy w obszarach peryferyjnych saldo to dla miast średnich cechuje się dodatnimi wartościami.
Effective management and planning of urban development requires taking into account links between cities and their backends, which are stronger and stronger. Current trends indicate that we should look at the city as a distinct functional unit. Some of its functions cross administrative borders. Consequently, a dense zone of influence is formed around each city. This zone, together with the inner city, creates a functional urban area. The impact of each city is proportional to its size and importance, and inversely proportional to the distance from it. The relationship between the city and its surroundings is determined using functional links, for example commuting to work, education, services, etc. In fact, these shuttle migration is gaining ever greater practical importance in providing foundation for land-use planning, transport policy or strategy. The aim of the article was to show the spatial differentiation of medium-sized cities in Poland in terms of commuting. The study is based on measures concerning shuttle migrations. The analysis uses indices of departures, arrivals, the balance of flows and the quotient factor too. Poles are a mobile nation. One in four inhabitant commutes to work outside the municipality of their residence. Medium-sized cities remain in the shade of large cities in terms of their labour market attractiveness. The largest flows of population to/from medium-sized cities are noted within the largest ones, which have a considerable number of urban units and easy access to them. These medium cities show negative balance of everyday flows, while in remote areas the saldo is positive.

Transport is the second energy consumer sector after housing in Algeria. In this article, we explore the ener- gy implication of commuting by considering a panel of socio-economic (SE) and built environment (BE) driving factors. The method is based on four steps: (i) The first step is to identify the main and potential drivers from the literature review and to propose a model that summarises the main assumptions that could explain the volume of commuting and the resulting energy consumption. (ii) In the second step, we designed and distributed 700 questionnaires in the municipality of Djelfa and retained 184 valid questionnaires in the final study sample. (iii) In the third step, we developed a method adapted to urban areas to quantify energy consumption as a function of the distance travelled, the type and density of occupation by means of transport and the type of fuel. (iv) The fourth step is to check the fit of the hypothetical model with a path analysis-based approach. The model developed identifies 15 factors, of which five have a direct impact and 10 have an indirect impact on the energy consumption of commuting. The model shows that building density and the age of the respondent can reduce the energy consumption of commuting by up to −15% and −12% respectively; whereas the number of cars by housing and the round-trip frequency could increase the energy consumption up to 38% and 27% respectively. Our results suggest a structuring role of the socio-economic characteristics of households in explaining the energy consumption of commuting.

The aim of this paper is to find conditions that assure the existence of the commutant lifting theorem for commuting pairs of contractions (briefly, bicontractions) having (*-)regular dilations. It is known that in such generality, a commutant lifting theorem fails to be true. A positive answer is given for contractive intertwinings which doubly intertwine one of the components. We also show that it is possible to drop the doubly intertwining property for one of the components in some special cases, for instance for semi-subnormal bicontractions. As an application, a result regarding the existence of a unitary (isometric) dilation for three commuting contractions is obtained.

Transport needs result from the essence of human needs (from the need for movement or from natural mobility) and from the scientific, cultural, economic or administrative activities carried out. They have a diverse character resulting from both objective and subjective reasons, and their consequence is the emergence of journeys. The specificity of these mobility can be analyzed in reference to various spaces related to the implementation of journeys. The purpose of the paper is to present the results of research carried out as part of the project Strategy for urban development of the Radom Functional Area (ROF). These studies concerned the recognition of transport users’ behaviours and preferences of commuting in Radom. The research was carried out in traffic generators performing the most important urban functions and defining the specificity of socio-economic processes in Radom.

Participation in Leisure-Time Physical Activity (LTPA) has declined among university undergraduate students in Nigeria. Studies have identified the physical environment of universities as a potential cause of the decline; however, this claim has not been verified. Therefore, this study evaluates the role of the physical environment in universities in inducing student participation in LTPA. This study is necessary, as previous research has shown the involvement in LTPA helps in developing the physical, physiological, social, emotional and mental capacities of students. It is also a factor in the relief of daily stress from the heavy academic workloads of the university students. A quantitative research methodology was adopted for this study. A total sample of 2,867 students was selected from 14 public universities in South West Nigeria using a multi-stage sampling technique. It was deduced from the study that the physical environment was a determining factor for LTPA participation among university undergraduate students in South West Nigeria. In addition, it was found that the availability of facility infrastructure that encourages students roaming and safety pre-cautions on campus would enhance participation in LTPA among the university students.

The article aims to present data resources for the needs of research in geography of industry in Poland. These sources can be independently obtained primary sources or secondary sources. Primary data have a unique value. They are collected for a specific purpose to solve a specific problem. They usually allow for a detailed description of the theme under investigation. As they are obtained directly from the surveyed entities during statistical research, they show timeliness and originality. In the research in geography of industry, primary data sources are used relatively rarely. It is mainly due to the time-consuming and costly nature of this type of research and the increasing difficulties in obtaining consent for research from respondents. Therefore, secondary data, which are the results of previous research, primarily by Statistics Poland, are especially popular. Statistics Poland, deals with issues useful from the point of view of the research in geography of industry, both in the form of surveys of the official statistics and as part of experimental studies. The article describes research carried out by Statistics Poland, which provides essential information about the industry and its location. Administrative data sources which may be helpful in this regard have also been mentioned. Public statistics has access to many of them. The area of interest of official statistics regarding data on industrial activities also refers to the data on the labour areas, which were created using the European version of the TTWA algorithm. The argument presented in this article proves that public statistics investigates a broad spectrum of phenomena related to industrial activities, and the results of these studies are and may be widely used by researchers in geography of industry.

The paper presents conclusions of the survey conducted in Gdańsk in October 2017. The study aimed to compare travel times between the largest residential districts in Gdańsk and the area of the businessacademic center. The research was aimed at showing time losses on the commuting trips and their organizational and infrastructural causes, which lead to the extension of the actual travel time. Based on the identiefid time losses and their causes, recommendations regarding further organizational and investment work were presented to improve the competitiveness of public urban transport and bicycles in relation to the cars.

Dojazdy do pracy stanowią najważniejszy i najlepiej zauważalny przejaw powiązań przestrzenno-funkcjonalnych między poszczególnymi miejscowościami, gminami, powiatami oraz innymi regionami. Z tego powodu podkreśla się istotność ich badania w kontekście dociekań naukowych, ale też na różnych szczeblach planowania przestrzennego. W artykule zidentyfikowano kierunki i skalę dojazdów do pracy w odniesieniu do gminy miejsko-wiejskiej Uniejów. Analizując dane Głównego Urzędu Statystycznego o przemieszczeniach ludności związanych z zatrudnieniem w latach 2006, 2011 i 2016, uwzględniające przepływy powyżej dziewięciu osób, stwierdzono wzrost liczby wyjazdów pracowniczych mieszkańców tej jednostki, jak również przyjazdów do pracy w gminie Uniejów osób zameldowanych poza jej granicami.
Commuting to work is the most important and most easily observable indication of spatial-functional connections between localities, municipalities, districts and other regions. For this reason analysis of commuting patterns is very useful in scientific research as well as at various levels of spatial planning. This article identifies the directions and scale of commuting to work for the urban-rural municipality of Uniejów. On the basis of analysis of data from the Central Statistical Office concerning population movements connected with employment in the years 2006, 2011 and 2016 (flows of more than 9 persons)it has been found that the number of out-commutes to work from this municipality as well as incoming travels to work from outside Uniejów municipality have increased.

Głównym celem artykułu jest wykazanie przydatności metodologii modelowania dwupoziomowego w szacowaniu wartości zmiennych społeczno-ekonomicznych. W pierwszej części opracowania przedstawione zostaną etapy konstrukcji modelu uwzględniającego dwupoziomową strukturę badanej populacji oraz zmiennych. W części drugiej przedstawiono przykład zastosowania opisanej metodologii do szacowania liczby osób pracujących w przekroju powiatów. Jako jednostki drugiego poziomu przyjęto województwa. Dzięki zastosowaniu metodologii modelowania dwupoziomowego możliwe jest uwzględnienie zróżnicowania poziomu badanej zmiennej oraz siły jej zależności ze zmiennymi objaśniającymi pomiędzy grupami. Ponadto, pozyskane zostały dodatkowe informacje dzięki wprowadzeniu zmiennych objaśniających z drugiego poziomu, czyli dotyczących całych grup. W części drugiej jako zmienne objaśniające wykorzystane zostały miedzy innymi wyniki unikatowego badania przeprowadzonego w Urzędzie Statystycznym w Poznaniu, które dotyczyły przepływów związanych z zatrudnieniem. Głównym źródłem informacji tego badania są zasoby rejestrów podatkowych Ministerstwa Finansów. Dane te dotyczą roku 2006 i jest to pierwsza informacja od 1988 roku dotycząca dojazdów do pracy udostępniona przez GUS. Przeprowadzone zostało porównanie jakości szacunków otrzymanych przy pomocy omawianego podejścia dwupoziomowego oraz klasycznej regresji liniowej. Otrzymane wyniki wskazują na przewagę modelu dwupoziomowego.
The main objective of this paper is to demonstrate the usefulness of two-level modeling methodology for estimating the socio-economic variables. In the first part of the paper one will present the model construction stages taking the two-level structure of population and variables into account. In the second part an example of using the above methodology for estimating the number of working people in cross-section of counties is presented. Province were chosen as second-level unit. With the two-level modeling methodology one can include variation of the level of the considered variable and the strength of its dependencies with explanatory variables between the groups. Furthermore, additional information has been obtained by using the explanatory variables from the second level – concerning the entire group. In the second part, as the explanatory variables, among others, the results of unique study in the Statistical Office in Poznań which concerned the flow of employees were used. The main source of information of this study are the fiscal records of the Ministry of Finance. These data concern the year 2006 and this has been the first information for commuting since 1988 provided by the Central Statistical Office. The comparison of the quality of estimates obtained using two-level approach and the classical linear regression were conducted. The results show the advantage of two-level model.
