Increased interest in development of alternative fuels used to power combustion engines is caused by excessive use of fuels obtained from mineral sources. Depletion of resources, political aspects as well as the negative impact on the environment are commonly discussed issues in relation to fossil fuels. On the other hand, biodegradability, lower toxic components emissions and interchangeability with mineral fuels are commonly described benefits related to biodiesel, interpreted as fatty acid methyl esters obtained from fatty raw material. Also the multiplicity of raw materials that can be used for production promotes popularization of the biodiesel. However the variety of raw materials can have significant impact on the number of physicochemical properties of alternative fuels due to the differences in molecular structures forming given type of raw material. The article presents analysis of properties of different types of biodiesel and its mixtures with diesel according to the outlines presented in the quality standards for mineral and alternative fuels. Alternative fuels were produced in the laboratory setup from swine, poultry, rape and sunflower fatty raw material. Such parameters as: density, kinematic viscosity, flash point, acid value, oxidation stability, cold filter plugging point, sulphur content, water content and total contamination were examined, based on the results, the quality of the biofuels was evaluated. Study confirms that biofuels derived from plant origin fatty raw material present favorable results in the aspect water content, total contamination, acid value and cold flow properties, thus biofuels derived from animal origin raw fatty material presents lower density and sulphur content.

W artykule przedstawiono cechy paliwa FAME bodące przyczyną korozji metali oraz wyniki badania wpływu dodatków na właściwości przeciwkorozyjne paliwa z udziałem FAME do silników o zapłonie samoczynnym. Wyniki badań potwierdzają dane literaturowe o możliwości działania korodującego na stal przez paliwo biodiesel (FAME) i biopaliwo B20. Uzyskane wyniki badań pozwalają również na stwierdzenie, że właściwości przeciwkorozyjne FAME i biopaliwa B20 w znacznym stopniu zależą od jakości tych paliw bezpośrednio po ekspedycji od producenta, czyli od sposobu prowadzenia procesu technologicznego wytwarzania FAME i jego oczyszczania od substancji ubocznych. Wpływa to w istotny sposób na możliwości poprawy jakości biopaliw, jakie dają dodatki przeciwkorozyjne.
The paper describes specific features of the FAME causing metal corrosion and it presents results of examination focused on effects of corrosion inhibitors on anticorrosion properties of the FAME used as a component of diesel engine fuel. The data on corrosive action of biodiesel (FAME) and biofuel (B20) on steel have been confirmed. The obtained results prove that FAME and B20 fuels anticorrosive properties mainly depend on the fuel quality. It could be achieved during the technological process of the FAME production and its purification of side products. The paper shows that possibilities of biofuels quality improvement through anticorrosive additives mainly depend on the fuel quality right after an expedition from a producer.

W pracy zaprezentowano wyniki badań dotyczących oceny biopaliw rolniczych RME i CSME ze względu na układ estrów kwasów tłuszczowych. Badania wykazały, że biopaliwa RME nie są produkowane z najkorzystniejszych z punktu widzenia paliw odmian rzepaku. Z tego powodu charakteryzują się niższą wartością opałową oraz dodatkowo wymagają użycia większej ilości antyutleniaczy. Biopaliwo CSME uzyskane z oleju lnianki różni się znacznie ze względu na skład kwasów tłuszczowych od RME. Zawiera więcej kwasu linolowego, a mniej oleinowego. Taka sytuacja powoduje, że Biodiesel CSME nie spełnia wymagań normy EN 14214, co z kolei ogranicza jego dystrybucję w stacjach paliw.
The paper presents results of the research concerning evaluation of the RME and CSME agricultural biofuels as regards content of fatty acid esters. The research has proven that the RME biofuels production is not based on the most favourable rape varieties from point of view of fuels. As a result, they are characterised by lower calorific value, and additionally they require more antioxidants to be used. The CSME biofuel obtained from Gold of Pleasure (Camelina sativa L.) oil differs considerably from RME as regards constitution of fatty acids. It contains more linoleic acid, and less oleic acid. As a result of this situation, the CSME biodiesel obtained from Gold of Pleasure oil fails to satisfy the EN 14214, which in turn restricts its distribution via petrol stations.

The use of renewable fuels can reduce consumption of fossil fuels as well as diversify the range of alternative energy carriers. The advantage of biofuels is that they can be obtained from waste materials. Biofuels derived from vegetable or animal raw fatty material, as a result of transesterification, are characterized by similar physicochemical properties to mineral diesel fuel in terms of quality standards, however the fatty acid composition of the raw material can significantly influence exhaust gas emissions. The aim of the research is to determine the impact of the origin of various renewable biocomponents on exhaust gasses concentration emitted by compression ignition engine. The tests were conducted on a Common Rail, direct injection engine, operating under steady state conditions. Two kinds of biofuels produced from different fatty raw materials (rapeseed oil and swine lard) were used. All the experiments were performed on fuels containing a total of 50% biocomponent shares admixed to commercial diesel fuel. The tested samples included both: binary and ternary mixtures. During the experiments the differences in: hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides concentrations were examined as a result of different fuel composition. The study shows that the best results were achieved for fuel containing both plant and animal biocomponents.

W pracy zaprezentowano wyniki badań dotyczących określenia składu frakcyjnego biopaliw, zawierających biokomponent CSME oraz oleju napędowego. Badania przeprowadzono zgodnie z wymogami normy ASTMD 1160 przy użyciu mini destylarki firmy Grabner Instruments. Badania pokazały, że zarówno początek destylacji jak i jej przebieg zależy od ilości CSME w oleju napędowym. Spośród badanych biopaliw tylko B20 CSME może sprostać wymogom dla standardowego oleju napędowego stanowiącym, że 95% V/V paliwa musi odparować do temperatury 360°C.
The paper presents results of the research concerning determination of fractional composition for biofuels containing the CSME bio-component and diesel oil. The tests were carried out according to the requirements specified in the ASTMD 1160, using a mini distiller manufactured by Grabner Instruments. The tests have shown that both distillation start and progress depend on the CSME volume contained in diesel oil. Among all examined biofuels, only the B20 CSME may meet requirements of the standard applicable for standard diesel oil, which specifies that 95% v/v of fuel must evaporate up to the temperature of 360°C.

Biodiesel is widely perceived as a source of ecological energy used to power compression ignition engines as an alternative to fossil fuels. Depletion of fossil fuels and increasing environmental awareness of society has led to an increased demand for energy derived from renewable sources. This phenomenon requires acquisition of raw material used for biofuel production. In order avoid controversies related to misuse of edibles; sources of biofuel production should be viewed as inedible or waste materials. This paper presents an analysis of possible sources of animal material intended for biofuel production. An examination of the quality assessment for biofuels obtained in the laboratory setup, produced from swine lard and turkey fat is presented. The results have been compared to rapeseed biofuel and commercial diesel fuel as fuels commonly used to power compression ignition engines. The paper concerns an examination of pure biofuels and their mixtures with commercial diesel fuel in three different proportions. Parameters such as density, viscosity, acid value, cold filter plugging point, oxidation stability, sulphur content, total contamination, water content and flash point has been examined according to procedures outlined in the PN-EN 14214 Standard. Based on the results, biofuels and their mixtures have been analysed for use in compression ignition engines.

The assessment of renewable fuels on the basis of the results of internal combustion engine’s tests is not clearly good or not good. Biofuels can be a part of sustainability from energy sources, energy security and energy diversity point of view. But they cannot be assessed better compared to the fossil diesel as for their combustion and air pollution and the engine’s external parameters. Comparison test series has been conducted with three different fuel and their controlled blends. These fuels were fossil diesel, the conventional, standardized biodiesel, and a new type biodiesel, which is the so-called TBK-biodiesel. These tests covered the physicochemical properties of the fuels, the engine external parameters, the combustion parameters and the exhaust emission of an internal combustion compression ignition engine. Furthermore, external costs have been calculated based on the emission results. Physicochemical properties, engine parameters, combustion parameters, exhaust emission and external costs have been observed as parameter groups, which contain many parameters. A complex evaluation could be built with the help of such kind of parameter set. On the basis of the results, it can be established that almost in the most cases the direction of the parameters’ changes is negative. Thus, the evaluation’s centre of gravity has been observed as shifted in the negative direction.

The manuscript presents a comparative analysis of the performance and emission characteristics of a compression ignition engine equipped with a Common Rail injection system. The engine is fueled with diesel-biodiesel mixtures containing 25% and 50% share (by volume) of renewable components. Conventional diesel is used as a reference. Turkey lard and rapeseed oil are used as raw materials and subjected to the single-stage transesterification process to obtain methyl esters. The experiments are performed on a medium-duty, turbocharged, inter-cooled, Common Rail Direct Injection (CRDI) diesel engine. This study concentrates on one engine speed of 1500 rpm, typical for gen-set applications, and mid-load range from 100 Nm to 200 Nm. The scope of measurements covers the analysis of exhaust gasses concentration and engine efficiency parameters. In addition, the in-cylinder pressure measurements are performed in order to provide insight into the differences in combustion characteristics between examined fuel mixtures. The study reveals that the addition of the renewable component to fuel mixture positively affects a number of examined performance parameters as well as de-creases the concentration of the examined toxic exhaust components, in the majority of cases.

A rotor-stator spinning disk reactor for intensified biodiesel synthesis is described and numerically simulated in the present research. The reactor consists of two flat disks, located coaxially and parallel to each other with a gap ranging from 0.1 mm to 0.2 mm between the disks. The upper disk is located on a rotating shaft while the lower disk is stationary. The feed liquids, triglycerides (TG) and methanol are injected into the reactor from centres of rotating disk and stationary disk, respectively. Fluid hydrodynamics in the reactor for synthesis of biodiesel from TG and methanol in the presence of a sodium hydroxide catalyst are simulated, using convection-diffusion-reaction multicomponent transport model with the CFD software ANSYS©Fluent v. 13.0. Effect of operating conditions on TG conversion is particularly investigated. Simulation results indicate that there is occurrence of back flow close to the stator at the outlet zone. Small gap size and fast rotational speed generally help to intensify mixing among reagents, and consequently enhance TG conversion. However, increasing rotational speed of spinning disk leads to more backflow, which decreases TG conversion. Large flow rate of TG at inlet is not recommended as well because of the short mean residence time of reactants inside the reactor.

W artykule przedstawiono analizę wyników pomiarów zawartości biokomponentów w postaci estrów metylowych kwasów karboksylowych oleju rzepakowego (RME - Rapeseed oil Methyl Ester) w oleju napędowym. Zgodnie z obowiązującymi normami zastosowana została metoda spektrofotometrii w podczerwieni IR. Do oceny ilościowej wykorzystano prawo Lamberta-Beera. W torze pomiarowym do ustawienia analitycznej długości fali (5,73 žm) zastosowana została siatka dyfrakcyjna z regulowaną szerokością szczeliny. Przeanalizowany został wpływ szerokości szczeliny w siatce na dokładność wyników pomiaru.
The paper presents analysis of the measurement results of the content of biocomponents - rapeseed oil methyl esters (RME) in diesel oil. Up to mandatory standard as a method of analysis concentration RME of biodiesel infrared absorption spectroscopy IR was used. The quantitative determinations of the contents of biocomponents from the absorption spectra are based on the Lambert and Beer law. In slotted section to set analytical wavelength (5,73 žm) diffraction grating with regulate width gap was applied. Width gap effect was analysed.

Recently, problems concerning the necessity of increasing the contribution of renewable energy are raised very often. In the aspect of combustion engines, the most common and promoted method consists in making liquid fuels from vegetable raw materials, which are subsequently added to conventional mineral fuels. In this study, the authors’ interest lies in the glycerin fraction, a side product of biodiesel production. Thus, it can be concluded that after phase separation, biofuel and glycerol are obtained and then glycerol can be utilized in the cosmetic, pharmaceutical or any other industry. However, in reality, we have to do with a three-stage equilibrium process, therefore, in the process of biodiesel production it is not glycerin that we deal with but a mixture of many substances of which glycerin is the main component. The amounts and contents of glycerin phases obtained in various technological conditions have been studied. Refined rapeseed oil, raw rapeseed oil and waste rapeseed oil were used as raw materials in biodiesel production.

Biodiesel is currently preferred for consumption and has been widely used as a substitute for diesel. This study aimed to determine the effect of various methanol-to-oil ratios in the esterification process and also the effect of hydrotalcite catalyst weight on the transesterification product. The catalyst was characterized with SEM, XRD, FTIR, and TG-DTG-DTA. The esterification process was operated at various oil-to-methanol ratios, i.e., 1:12–1:36 and the transesterification was performed using several catalyst weights, 0.5%–2.5%. The results showed that the optimum conditions of esterification were at the 1:30 molar ratio of oil-to-methanol, which decreased the amount of acid number by 95.75%, while the optimum condition of transesterification was at 1.5% catalyst weight. The characteristics of biodiesel using 0.5–2% hydrotalcite catalyst (acid number, total glycerol, free glycerol, ester levels, viscosity, density, oxidation stability) have met the Indonesian biodiesel standard of SNI-04-7182-2012.

Attempts were made to optimize variables affecting the yield of linseed oil biodiesel in a base catalyzed transesterification reaction. The variables studied were reaction temperature (40-70oC), catalyst (NaOH) concentration (0.1-1.5%) and reaction time (30-180 min). The conversion of linseed oil into methyl esters was confirmed through analytical methods like 1H NMR, gas chromatography (GC) and refractometer. The maximum biodiesel yield (97š1.045% w/w) was obtained at 0.5% catalyst concentration, 65oC temperature, 180 min reaction time and 6:1 molar ratio of methanol to oil. 1H NMR confirmed the practically obtained % conversion of triglycerides into methyl esters which was further evidenced by refractometer analyses. The refractive index of biodiesel samples was lower than pure linseed oil. GC analysis confirmed the presence of linolenic acid (C18:3) as the dominant fatty acid (68 wt. %) followed by oleic acid (C18:1), linoleic acid (C18:2) and stearic acid (C18:0) respectively. The physical properties of linseed oil biodiesel like specific gravity (0.90 g/cm3) and flash point (177oC) were higher than American Society for Testing and Materials standards (ASTM 6751) for biodiesel. However, kinematic viscosity (3.752 mm2/s) was in the range of ASTM standards.
