Opis:
Heavy metals are one of the leading environmental pollutants that are hazardous to the health of humans, soils, plants, and aquatic life. This study investigated the potential of Athyrium filix-femina, Ludwigia peruviana, and Sphagneticola trilobata for phytoextraction of Al, Ag, Cd, Cr, Ga, and Sr. To evaluate the heavy metal uptake by the plants, a pot experiment was conducted using uncontaminated soil mixed with a heavy metal solution. At the end of thirty days of planting, the bioconcentration and translocation factors were calculated. Cd accumulated to a greater degree in the shoots of A. filix-femina and L. peruviana than in their roots (8% and 12% respectively). Conversely, S. trilobata accumulated 27% more Cd in its roots than in its shoots. In all three plant species, roots had significantly higher heavy metal concentrations than shoots. These findings demonstrate that L. peruviana, A. filix-femina, and S. trilobata have high potential for phytoextraction and bioaccumulation of Cd, Sr, Ag, and Ga. The herbaceous nature of these plants, coupled with their deep roots and rapid growth rates, make them promising candidates for phytoremediation in heavy metal-contaminated soils.

Marine fishery products have been contaminated with microplastic (MPs), including molluscs, crustacean, and fish. The study aimed to analyze the number and types of MPs in the digestive tract and sediment, correlation between number of MPs with total body length, and estimated uptake of MPs in the fish from sediment using Bioaccumulation Factor (BAF). The method of determining sampling point involved purposive sampling and direct observation at Pramuka Island, Seribu Islands, Indonesia. Groupers fish were found in 20 individuals with 4 species of Epinephelus areolatus, E. ongus, E. sexfasciatus, and E. fuscoguttatus. The number of MPs found in the gastrointestinal tract of Epinephelus is 1648 particles with 3 types: fiber, fragment, and pellet. The highest number of MPs in the sediment was at dock and the lowest was at Gosong Pramuka Island. The numbers of MPs in the digestion tract does not affect the body length of individual species. The BAF value indicates result that the MPs uptake in sediments to gastrointestinal tract of Epinephelus grouper is low. All samples of the Epinephelus grouper were contaminated with MPs.

The consumption of contaminated natural pastures with highly dangerous and toxic heavy metals such as cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) by Andean camelids could cause harmful effects on the health of people exposed via consumption of contaminated alpaca meat. The concentration of Cd, Pb and Zn in the soil-plant-alpaca system was determined and the potential health risk associated with the intake of alpaca meat was evaluated. Soil and grass samples were collected in grazing areas of the South American camelid, and in the Municipal Slaughterhouse of Huancavelica, 30 samples of alpaca pectoral muscle were collected. The concentrations of Cd in the soil, grass and alpaca muscle exceeded the threshold values of national and international standards. The bioaccumulation factor values of the three elements studied was less than 1, Cd was the element with the highest bioavailability and mobility in the soil-plant-alpaca muscle system. The mean concentration of Cd in muscle was 0.335 ± 0.088 mg/kg which exceeded the maximum level allowed by the FAO/WHO and the European Commission, the concentration of Pb and Zn did not exceed the regulated limits. No significant differences were detected in accumulation according to sex. The non-carcinogenic hazard index (HI) values for the studied metals indicated that there is no adverse health risk (HI < 1) for children and adults from alpaca meat intake, but they could experience carcinogenic risk from prolonged exposure to Cd, and for exceeding the 1×10–4 limit threshold. It is recommended to conduct further studies on the accumulation of potentially toxic elements in alpaca tissues in order to determine the possible total risk of heavy metals in consumer’s health.

In this study, wild edible mushroom collected from Rivers and Imo state Nigeria were evaluated for heavy metals and dietary intake risks assessment. Four species of edible mushrooms were collected each in Imo (Lentinus squarrosulus, Pleurotus ostreatus, Lenziles betulina and Grifola polypilus frondosa) and River state (Lentinus squarrosulus, Pleurotus tuber-regium, Lenziles betulina, Auricularia aurucula) and metals extracted using HNO3 before analysis using flame atomic absorption spectrometry (F-AAS) in Varian AA 240 FS apparatus. Results showed that all metals showed concentrations lower than the permissible limits of World Health Organization (WHO) and Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) while Pb was not detected in all samples analyzed and Cd in samples collected from Rivers state. However, Cd was only detected (0.003 mg/kg) in one sample (Lenziles betulina) collected from Imo state. Fe exceeded recommended values in Lentinus squarrosulus, Pleurotus ostreatus and Lenziles betulina in Imo State. Bioaccumulation factors for all mushrooms were generally low (< 3). However, the potential tolerable weekly intake and target hazard quotient values for the four mushroom species were usually extremely low except for Fe (2.24) in Lenziles betulina. Consumption of mushrooms from these areas might pose no potential risk in terms of heavy metals except for Fe content in Lenziles betulina from Rivers state. However, in general, it can be concluded that the consumption of the studied mushroom species from all sites does not present any health risk arising from their regular consumption.

Opis:
Contamination of soil and water by various heavy metals such as Cd, Pb, Ni, Cu, and Fe is increasing day by day as a result of different activities, such as industrialization and urbanization. Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd), and Nickel (Ni) are examples of potential heavy metals that are neither essential elements nor have any role in the process of cell metabolism, but are easily absorbed and accumulated in different parts of a plant and living beings. This study was to investigate the translocation and bioaccumulation of heavy metals such as Pb, Ni, Cd, Cu, and Fe in Urtica dionica L and soil samples from 2 sites (uncontaminated – Koliq and contaminated – Kishnica in the Republic of Kosovo). The results revealed that in the contaminated site, the mean level of all the metals in soil and different parts (root, stalk, and leaf) of the plant were found to be significantly (p < 0.01) higher than the uncontaminated site. Multivariate analysis was used to determine the distribution of metals within the study area. The trace metal contents from different parts of these plants were determined by the use of AAS. The results revealed that Urtica dionica L. translocated high amounts of metals to its organs, especially to leaves, so that translocation factors were much higher than one (> 1). However, these concentrations of heavy metals in the soil and Urtica dionica L were higher than levels specified according to the standards in UK and Germany.

Improperly treated heavy metal wastewater discharged into water sources could cause a serious issue for the environment. The aim of this study was to bioaccumulate iron (Fe) using native bacteria isolated from the laboratory drainage water containing a high concentration of iron. The experiment was conducted in 250 mL conical flasks containing 150 mL Fe solution in concentrations of 25, 100, and 250 mg/L, respectively. Approximately 10% of bacteria inoculum was cultivated in each Fe concentration for 24 and 48 hours. The results showed that Pseudomonas hibiscicola was identified as an effective iron-accumulating species of bacteria. The species could remove Fe up to 82% (25 mg/L), 77.8% (100 mg/L) and 32% (250 mg/L). This promising result indicates that the native bacteria isolated from the environment pose a great potential for the remediation of wastewater containing iron.

In this paper, there was investigated the content of mercury in soil, plant, water, and hydrobionts in Kyiv and in the Obukhiv district of the Kyiv region. Studied territory is characterized by high anthropogenic load. The solid waste landfill in the Obukhiv district of the Kyiv region was characterized by the highest content of Hg in soil. Hg concentration in Taraxacum officinale L. was the highest among all studied plants, hence the possibility of recommending this species for phytoremediation of mercury-polluted soils. Mercury bioaccumulation of aquatic organisms (Blicca bjoerkna L., Esox lucius L., Ceratophyllum demersum L.) was much higher than in terrestrial organisms, which indicates the significantly prevailing level of availability and accumulation of mercury for aquatic species in the water environment.

In this study, contamination of potentially toxic elements (Cr, Mn, Cu, Zn, Hg and Pb) and species dominant in the fish community of Lake Kenon – Carassius auratus gibelio (Bloch 1782) and Perca fluviatilis (Linnaeus 1758) – were investigated. Chemical elements in samples were determined by atomic emission spectrometry (iCAP-6500, Thermo Scientific, USA) and mass spectrometry (X-7, Thermo Elemental, USA). It was reported that water in Lake Kenon contained low concentrations of the studied metals. The bottom sediments are enriched with Mn, Zn, Hg and Pb. Bioaccumulation factors of chemical elements accumulated from the surrounding water for P. fluviatus and C. auratus gibelio in descending order are as follows: Zn > Pb > Hg > Cu. P. fluviatus accumulates Hg in equal measure from both water and bottom sediments. Manganese and mercury are accumulated in the muscles of C. auratus gibelio from bottom sediments. The high accumulation ratio of Zn and Hg in C. auratus gibelio was obtained from Chara sp. (24 times) and Chironomus spp. (38 times), respectively. High accumulation ratio of Zn (26 times) and Hg (29 times) in P. fluviatus was obtained from amphipods. At the same time, Hg in P. fluviatus muscles was accumulated at high level from Chironomus spp. (67 times). In this way, management decisions for mitigation practices in Lake Kenon should be focussed on for the disposal of wastewater from the ash dump contaminated with chemical elements.

Opis:
Background. The aim of the conducted research was to determine the changes in nitrogen and magnesium contents in pea (Pisum sativum L.) and in soil under the effect of diversified nitrogen doses, as well as to calculate bioaccumulation factors and to demonstrate the relationships between the studied characteristics. Material and methods. In a two-year-long field experiment, carried out at the experimental plot of the Siedlce University of Natural Sciences and Humanities, four plots with different fertilization levels were established: 0 (control plot), N1, N2, and N3 $(N1 – 10, N2 – 20, and N3 – 30 kg·ha^(-1) )$. No phosphorus or potassium fertilization was applied because soil richness in assimilable phosphorus was established as very high, and in assimilable potassium as high. In the plant and soil material, total nitrogen content was established with the CHN/S method and total magnesium content with the ICP-AES method. Nitrogen and magnesium bioaccumulation factors and a coefficient of correlation were calculated. Results. Nitrogen fertilization $(10, 20 and 30 kg·ha^(-1))$ significantly diversified nitrogen content in seeds, straw, and pod walls of pea (Pisum sativum L.) and magnesium content in seeds and pod walls. Average nitrogen contents in pea were as follows: seeds (37.3) > roots (14.0) > straw (10.6) > pod walls (9.2) $g·kg^(-1)$ d.m. Magnesium content went in the opposite direction: pod walls (2.97) > straw > (2.20) > roots (1.68) > seeds $(1.18) g·kg^(-1)$ d.m. Total nitrogen content in the soil varied between $1.96 g·kg^(-1)$ and $2.31 g·kg^(-1)$ of soil, and total magnesium content between $0.75 g·kg^(-1)$ and $0.79 g·kg^(-1)$ of soil. Nitrogen and magnesium bioaccumulation factors in the pea biomass were high. Conclusion. The established nitrogen and magnesium contents in the dry matter of pea were within the limits of partition values that determine the acceptable amounts of those elements in fodder. The applied nitrogen fertilization at the doses of $10-30 kg·ha^(-1)$ did not affect negatively the changes in nitrogen and magnesium contents in pea and in the soil
Nawożenie azotem istotnie różnicowało zawartość azotu w nasionach, słomie i strączynach grochu siewnego (Pisum sativum L.) oraz magnezu w nasionach i strączynach. Średnie zawartości azotu w grochu siewnym przedstawiają się następująco: nasiona (37.3) > korzenie (14.0) > słoma (10.6) > strączyny $(9.2) g·kg^(-1)$ s.m. Odwrotnie kształtowała się zawartość magnezu: strączyny (2.97) > słoma > (2.20) > korzenie (1.68) > nasiona $(1.18) g·kg^(-1)$ s.m. Całkowita zawartość azotu w glebie wynosiła $1.96–2.31 g·kg^(-1)$ gleby, a magnezu $0.75–0.79 g·kg^(-1)$ gleby. Oznaczone zawartości azotu i magnezu w suchej masie grochu siewnego mieściły się w zakresie liczb granicznych określających dopuszczalne ilości tych pierwiastków w paszy

The aim of this paper was to assess the content of Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn and Ni in water and in algae collected in the region of the Makarska Riviera. The samples of water and algae were collected in August 2016 from nine sampling points: Makarska, Podgora, Baska Voda, Split ul. Jana Pawła II, Storbeč, Podstrana, Omiš, Mimice, Dvernik. The concentrations of the elements in the water and in the digested algae samples were determined using the ICP-OES method. The study results indicate anthropogenic enrichment of all studied elements in water, with the exception of manganese. Higher contents of studied elements in water collected in Split were found. The concentrations of elements in algae do not indicate pollution of the natural environment and are characteristic of non-contaminated areas. The content of the studied elements in the water decreased in the order Fe>Cu>Mn>Ni>Cr in Cystoseira barbata algae decreased in the order Fe>Cu>Mn>Ni>Cr and in Ulva rigida in the order Fe>Mn>Cr>Cu>Ni.
Celem pracy była ocena zawartości Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn i Ni w wodzie i glonach pobranych w rejonie Riwiery Makarskiej. Próbki wody oraz glonów pobrano w sierpniu 2016 roku z dziewięciu punktów badawczych: Makarska, Podgora, Baska Voda, Split ul. Jana Pawła II, Storbeč, Podstrana, Omiš, Mimice, Dvernik. Zawartość pierwiastków w wodzie oraz roztworzonych próbkach glonów oznaczono metodą spektrometrii emisyjnej, w aparacie Optima 7600 DV firmy Perkin Elmer. Determination of the proximate, nutritionally valuable mineral in five samples of food seasonings label as, A, B, C, D, & E food condiments readily consumed in Nigeria were obtained from Gwagwalada Central Market Abuja. Investigating the concentrations of some mineral elements such as, iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), and two heavy metals, cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) were carried out using AA320N Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) after acid digestion with 2:1 HNO3/HClO4. The result shows that all samples contained high levels of protein (13.63% ±0.53%) with mean value moisture, ash, fat, fiber, and carbohydrate for all samples levels being (3.94%±0.64%), (57.51% ±4.27%), (5.11% ±0.20%), (0.02% ±0.00%) and (18.41% ±0.41%) respectively. Sample D has high Fe concentration with (0.04 ±0.01 μg/g) and Sample B & C has low Fe concentration with (0.01 ±0.00 μg/g). Sample D & E has high Zn concentration with (0.03 ±0.01 μg/g) and sample A, B & C has low Zn concentration with (0.02 ±0.01 μg/g). In cadmium, sample A has the high concentration (0.03±0.01μg/g), sample B & D has the low Cd concentration (0.02 ±0.00 μg/g). Sample D had the high Pb concentration (0.05 ±0.00 μg/g), sample C had the low Pb concentration (0.02±0.01 μg/g). In conclusion, Fe, Zn, Cd and Pb were both present in low concentrations in all the samples analyzed. The presence of Cd and Pb in the food seasonings even at low concentration could prove fatal through bioaccumulation. The low level of the toxic metals, Pb and Cd indicates that these products meet the safe limits specified by most food standards.

The objective of the paper was to assess the trace elements content (Cd, Cu, Cr, Fe, Mn, Ni and Pb) in gills, muscles, gonads and liver in two fish species from two bays (Karantinna and Balalaklava) in the region of Sevastopol. Concentration of the investigated elements in the obtained solutions and water were determined with the absorption atomic spectrometry method with electro-thermal atomization. Levels of heavy metals differed in two locations. Differences due to fish species were slight. Water from both locations included the investigated elements in the amounts that indicated anthropogenic en-richment. Concentration of the investigated elements in fish liver was in the order from the lowest Pb < Cd < Cr < Mn < Ni < Cu < Fe. In case of gonads, the content was in the order Cd < Pb < Mn < Cr < Ni < Cu < Fe, while in muscles and gills it was respectively Cd < Pb < Cr < Mn < Cu < Ni < Fe and Cd < Pb < Cr < Cu < Ni < Mn < Fe. The concluded contents of all investigated elements in particular fish organs were characteristic for ecosystems changed into anthropogenic. Critical values of the concentration of the investigated metals in muscles were not exceeded from the point of view of fish use for food.

Concentration of the investigated elements in fish liver was from the lowest Pb < Cd < Cr < Mn < Ni < Cu < Fe. W przypadku gonad, zawartości kształtowały się w kolejności Cd < Pb < Mn < Cr < Ni < Cu < Fe, natomiast w mięśniach i skrzelach odpowiednio Cd < Pb < Cr < Mn < Cu < Ni < Fe i Cd < Pb < Cr < Cu < Ni < Mn < Fe.

Opis:
Therefore the carried out study aimed at determination of the effect of high-calcium brown coal ash and compost being produced from municipal sewage sludge on the content and bioaccumulation of heavy metals in potato tubers, wheat grains and rapeseeds during a three-year period. Rapeseeds contained most Cd whereas wheat rains less. Potato tubers, wheat grains and rapeseeds contained more Mn, Ni and Zn in the fertilization objects with municipal sewage sludge with or without coal ash and compared to those where calcium carbonate or coal ash had been introduced into the soil at a dose corresponding to 1.5 Mg CaO · ha−1  at the beginning of this study. Differences in the Mn, Ni and Zn contents in test plants between the fertilization objects with sewage sludge of with and without addition of ash were not significant.

Opis:
Background. The aim of the presented research was to trace changes in lithium and aluminium content in eastern galega subjected to varied levels of potassium fertilization and then to compare the obtained results with permitted animal nutrition standards and to calculate bioaccumulation factors. Material and methods. The three-year field experiment was conducted on experimental plots belonging to the University of Natural Sciences and Humanities in Siedlce. The research included three factors: I – potassium fertilisation (four levels): K0, K1, K2, K3; II – the years of conducting research (three years); III – eastern galega harvest cut dates (three dates each year). Phosphate fertilizers were applied at a rate of P – $23 kg·ha^(-1)$, and potassium K0 – 0; K1 – 124; K2 – 166; K3 – $207.5 kg·ha^(-1)$. Nitrogen fertilization was not applied because the research was carried out on a perennial plantation. Results. Diversified potassium fertilization significantly affected changes in the lithium and aluminium content in galega plants and in the soil. Fertilization at a rate of 166 kg of potassium per hectare increased the content of lithium and aluminium in the test plants. A decrease in the content of the analyzed elements in the eastern galega dry weight was found in the successive years of the research and in the harvesting dates. Significantly, the highest total lithium content was found in soil fertilized with potassium at a rate of $124 kg·ha^(-1)$, while for aluminium content it was after the application of $207.5 kg·ha^(-1)$ of potassium. The bioaccumulation factors of lithium and aluminium in the eastern galega biomass were at medium and low levels, respectively. Conclusion. The determined contents of lithium and aluminium in eastern galega dry weight remained below the permitted values for these elements in feed.
W badaniach uwzględniono trzy czynniki: I – nawożenie (cztery poziomy : K0, K1, K2, K3); II – lata prowadzenia badań (trzy lata) ; III – terminy zbioru rutwicy wschodniej (trzy terminy). Nawozy fosforowe stosowano w dawce $23 kg·ha^(-1)$ P, a potasowe: K1 – 124; K2 – 166; K3 – $207.5 kg·ha^(-1)$. Oznaczone zawartości litu i glinu w suchej masie rutwicy wschodniej mieściły się poniżej zakresu liczb granicznych określających dopuszczalne ilości tych pierwiastków w paszy.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to estimate the content of trace elements (Zn, Cu, Cr, Cd, Pb) in soils and consumer plants grown under and without the influence of traffic. The species such as lettuce, raspberry, beetroot, apple, carrot, chives and onion were selected for the study. The samples were mineralized and the heavy metal content in plants and soils was determined by means of atomic absorption spectrometry. The content of heavy metals in the soil from municipal allotments was higher than in the soil from the Saniki Colony. For both samples, the permissible soil content was not exceeded. The amount of trace elements in plants varied depending on species, but the place of vegetables and fruits origin was also important. Most of trace elements occurred in larger amounts in the plants from allotments, and in smaller amounts in the plants from Saniki Colony.
