Many of Beckett characters suffer from different kinds of disabilities and impairments, this being one of the ways of punishing them for “the eternal sin of having been born.” The article discusses blindness in Waiting for Godot, Endgame and All That Fall. In the first of these plays blindness afflicts Pozzo during the interval between the two acts, that is during a single night. Combined with the loss of his watch it is indicative of his entering the subjective realm of timelessness. The blindness of Hamm in Endgame and his inability to walk make him dependant on Clov who is unable to sit, which recalls Pozzo’s dependence on Lucky in the second act. Similarly, the blind Mr Rooney also must get help from other people to be able to move around. In the case of all three plays blindness must be perceived on a literal, as well as metaphorical level.

We report this peculiar case of ocular cysticercosis with intermittent blindness which is never reported to our knowledge. This case highlights use of Ultrasound for examination of the posterior segment of eye globe. In limited facilities Ultrasound is the main modality to reach the diagnosis. We also wish to enforce the point that in endemic regions and in young population primary cysticercosis and its complications must be kept in differentials of cystic mass or calcified mass, as in this case, we have seen both the stages of cysticercosis progression.

The article is devoted to the motif of a lie in selected works by German-language writers, and the texts analysed include Friedrich Dürenmatt’s Der Blinde, Stefan Zweig’s Die unsichtbare Sammlung and Jurek Becker’s Jakob der Lügner. A lie as an element used in literature has different representations: frauds, intrigues, betrayals and purposeful deceptions are accompanied by lies invoked by fear or necessity, and what matters in evaluation of the behaviour of the protagonists that lie are the reasons and motives of their decisions. The anal-ysis included is focused on a merciful lie, a lie caused by pity, which determines significantly the course of action and the protagonists’ lives, saves their health or even life; a lie that results from good and love for other people.

The presented review discusses recent research on human echolocation by blind and sighted subjects, aiming to classify and evaluate the methodologies most commonly used when testing active echolocation methods. Most of the reviewed studies compared small groups of both blind and sighted volunteers, although one in four studies used sighted testers only. The most common trial procedure was for volunteers to detect or localize static obstacles, e.g., discs, boards, or walls at distances ranging from a few centimeters to several meters. Other tasks also included comparing or categorizing objects. Few studies utilized walking in real or virtual environments. Most trials were conducted in natural acoustic conditions, as subjects are marginally less likely to correctly echolocate in anechoic or acoustically dampened rooms. Aside from live echolocation tests, other methodologies included the use of binaural recordings, artificial echoes or rendered virtual audio. The sounds most frequently used in the tests were natural sounds such as the palatal mouth click and finger snapping. Several studies have focused on the use of artificially generated sounds, such as noise or synthetic clicks. A promising conclusion from all the reviewed studies is that both blind and sighted persons can efficiently learn echolocation.

The article concerns Jadwiga Stańczakowa, a blind journalist and writer, and friend of Miron Białoszewski. The author analyses Stańczakowa’s writing as an independent literary phenomenon deserving its own interpretation. Drawing on autobiographical and autoethnographic work by Maria Reimann, who is also an author with a disability, the author observes the emancipatory meaning of blindness. The text present three identities of Jadwiga Stańczakowa. First, the author shows her as a woman and asks if her blindness affected her femininity and sexuality. Secondly, the author interprets fragments of texts written by Stańczakowa during depression. Finally, she describes the writer’s identity, the most autonomous, although they all depend on Białoszewski.

Przedmiotem rozważań jest koncepcja self-blindness. Autorka definiuje ją przez eksperyment myślowy przedstawiający sytuację, w której osoba pomimo zachowania zdolności poznawczych i racjonalności nie ma bezpośredniego dostępu do własnych przekonań. Przywołuje również uporządkowane przez siebie argumenty przeczące możliwości istnienia takiej sytuacji. Pod koniec artykułu stara się wskazać wartościowe wnioski i drogi dalszych rozważań bazujące na tej koncepcji – dotyczące mechanizmów dostępu do przekonań oraz ich natury.

Nothing intrigues more than performing tasks that disability renders impossible. Overcoming physical limitations and mental restraints raises an interesting issue of the human creative potential broadly investigated by scientists and acutely experienced by the disabled. A cruel disease that leads to complete blindness appears even more dramatic when affects visual artists. A blind artist painter sounds an oxymoron, but the stories of Sargy Mann and John Bramblitt prove that a human being can always defy comfortable schemes. A sighted observer may be puzzled by complexity of this multipolar drama marked with painful turning points, but also, perhaps surprisingly, with a feeling of gain, sense, and reward. The artists’ personal and subjective perception of the loss inspires a discussion that presents universal values in a broader perspective. Beauty and truth, uncertainty and courage are to be found in the narrations of the artists above and the essays of a distinguished Polish philosopher Fr. Józef Tischner. The article portrays the silhouettes of the blind painters focusing on their artistic strive to a meaningful and rewarding life in the light of philosophical reflections based on the axiomatic concepts of beauty and truth.

Jadwiga Stańczakowa was a blind writer, who was more known as a friend of Miron Białoszewski than for her own literary work. Meanwhile, she is the author of several books of poetry, autobiographical prose and a diary. Miron Białoszewski was certainly master for her, thanks to him she began to write about his own blindness. Although that all her work was connected with Białoszewski, it is worth to hear her own voice, especially in the context of disability studies. In this article the author is trying to bring out the poetess of the Białoszewski’s shadows. First of all, the author pointed out that blindness was a magical experience treated as a basis of lirycs. But the dysfunction of sight has also been a cause of recurring depressions. The writing during this ‘double disease’ was particularly difficult and made sense of self-therapy.

The ability of some humans to echolocate has become widely known primarily due to a small number of famous expert echolocators who are capable of extraordinary feats. However, a lesser-known fact is that all humans exhibit this skill unconsciously and can learn it relatively quickly and implicitly through repeated practice. In our experiments we tested groups of 12 blind and 14 sighted untrained participants in a simple echolocation test - localizing a 1m x 2m vertical wall at distances between 1 and 3 meters using 10 different types of sounds as the source signals for the echolocation attempts. There were significant differences between the participant groups and between some of the tested sounds. Although the groups were small, a clear difference was also observed between the experienced totally blind participants and the legally blind visually impaired participants that had residual light sensitivity. From the compared sounds 3 kHz and 4 kHz synthetic percussion sounds, pink and blue noise were among the sources that led to the highest chances of correctly guessing the obstacle’s direction and distance.

Celem artykułu było zbadanie wpływu niepełnosprawności wzrokowej na umiejętność rozpoznawania i oceniania emocji podczas komunikacji. Przedstawione w artykule badanie z udziałem dorosłych osób niewidomych i widzących wskazuje, iż osoby niewidome mogą napotykać pewne trudności w rozpoznawaniu stanów emocjonalnych innych osób.
This study was designed to investigate whether people who are blind are able to recognise and judge negative emotions during natural communication similar to people who are sighted. In the current study, blind, sighted and blindfolded participants were given two tasks and they were tested on their ability to recognise target emotions (the emotion recognition task) and to judge the intensity of the emotions (the emotion judgement task). The results revealed significant differences between the groups in the recognition and judgement of negative emotions. The study shows that people who are blind may encounter difficulties in recognising emotions and judging their intensity during natural communication. This may be related to their lack of access to the speakers’ gestures, facial expressions and body postures

Zamiejscowy w Sopocie Szkoła Wyższa Psychologii Społeczne Zjawisko niedostrzegania zmian zachodzących bezpośrednio w polu percepcyjnym podmiotu jest zaskakująco powszechne. Zdaniem większości badaczy jest ono wynikiem ograniczeń pamięci roboczej, która może być rozumiana jako ognisko uwagi i jej orientacji w kierunku konkretnych obiektów w polu percepcyjnym. Zgodnie z założeniem teorii uwagi ekstensywnej (Kolańczyk, w tym tomie) ognisko uwagi zmienia swą postać od wąskiej orientacji na czynniki szczególnie istotne z punktu widzenia realizowanego celu w trybie intensywnym po szeroką orientację na obiekty mogące stanowić użytek w realizacji szeroko zakreślonych standardów jednostki przy ekstensywności. Uwaga ekstensywna charakteryzuje się względną dominacją procesów oddolnych, co pozwala sądzić, że zmiany zachodzące w środowisku jednostki stają się łatwiej wykrywalne. Przeprowadzone badanie, dotyczyło zdolności wykrywania zmian zachodzących w polu wzrokowym. Uwagą manipulowano przy użyciu wizualizacji z elementami treningu autogennego w przypadku ekstensyfikacji lub rozwiązywania prostego, ale długiego zadania matematycznego w warunku intensyfikacji uwagi. Zgodnie z oczekiwaniami, więcej zmian wykrywano w stanie uwagi ekstensywnej, w porównaniu do stanu uwagi intensywnej, co potwierdza tezę, iż ekstensywność uwagi redukuje zjawisko niedostrzegania zmian.

The literary work of A.G. Matoš is characterized by a strong interest in femininity and sexuality. The analyses of female’s figures and sexuality in the author’s oeuvre have strived to imbue these concepts with stable meaning. Our thesis is that sexuality and the rhetoric of femininity are generally unreadable and ambiguous, and that their direct, literal interpretations are based on their unconscious exclusion. The example of the short story Cvijet sa raskršća (Crossroads Flower) shows that the rhetoric of femininity works as a drive of the text and its reading, and that the interpretations, trying to calm the ambiguity of that concept, remain blind to the blindness of insight, for what the text sets as a necessary condition of its own reading and understanding.

Celem artykułu jest zaprezentowanie aspektów stygmatyzacji i stereotypizacji osób niewidzących w świetle teorii stygmatyzacji Ervinga Goffmana. Omówiono także tendencje przeciwstawne zjawiskom naznaczenia społecznego i tworzenia uproszczonych schematów poznawczych dotyczących tej grupy osób, wśród których należy wymienić rewizję języka potocznego i tekstów kultury w kierunku nieutrwalania zafałszowanego obrazu osób niewidomych. Na koniec przedstawiono także narzędzia i materiały przydatne w pracy pedagogicznej ukierunkowanej na tworzenie środowiska inkluzyjnego.
The aim of the paper is to present aspects of stigmatizing and stereotyping the visually impaired people in the light of social stigma theory of Erving Goffman. Also discussed are the tendencies contrary to the phenomena of social stigma as well as the creation of simplified cognitive schemes related to people with blindness. These tendencies are for example: revision of common speech and cultural discourse to not to consolidate false image of people with blindness. At the end of the paper there are also presented practical tools and materials which can be useful in pedagogical practice.

This article is based on a case study conducted in an Italian primary school where the interactions between a sightless girl (named Jasmine, aged 8) and her classmates were extensively observed. The initial aim was to understand and describe the problems encountered by the sightless pupil, who acted in a social, organizational and physical environment which was not designed for handicapped people. However, other theoretical issues emerged during the research. The main finding was that sightlessness seems socially and organizationally constructed before it becomes a biological/physical handicap. The organizational processes through which the blindness is slowly and routinely constructed were extensively described.

Sonification is defined as presentation of information by means of non-speech audio. In assistive technologies for the blind, sonification is most often used in electronic travel aids (ETAs) – devices which aid in independent mobility through obstacle detection or help in orientation and navigation. The presented review contains an authored classification of various sonification schemes implemented in the most widely known ETAs. The review covers both those commercially available and those in various stages of research, according to the input used, level of signal processing algorithm used and sonification methods. Additionally, a sonification approach developed in the Naviton project is presented. The prototype utilizes stereovision scene reconstruction, obstacle and surface segmentation and spatial HRTF filtered audio with discrete musical sounds and was successfully tested in a pilot study with blind volunteers in a controlled environment, allowing to localize and navigate around obstacles.

This article is based on a case study conducted in an Italian primary school where the interactions between a sightless girl (named Jasmine, aged 8) and her classmates were extensively observed. The initial aim was to understand and describe the problems encountered by the sightless pupil, who acted in a social, organizational and physical environment which was not designed for handicapped people. However, other theoretical issues emerged during the research. The main finding was that sightlessness seems socially and organizationally constructed before it becomes a biological/physical handicap. The organizational processes through which the blindness is slowly and routinely constructed were extensively described.

Dietrich von Hildebrand is a representative of 20th-century absolutism in axiology and ethics. In this paper I demonstrate the main arguments he gave against ethical relativism. These are: emotional cognition of values, axiological blindness (full constitutive value-blindness, partial value-blindness, blindness of subsumption), immanent contradiction of all relativism and some particular arguments against axiological relativism and subjectivism.

W pracy przedstawiono koncepcję wykorzystania XML do zebrania i uporządkowania danych z pochodzących z aplikacji biomedycznych badających prawidłowość widzenia barwnego, jak również możliwości ich wykorzystania do automatycznego diagnozowania rodzaju i typu ślepoty barw. W pracy omówiono również przykłady analizy i zastosowania zebranych informacji, m.in. w postaci publikowania ich w postaci ogólnodostępnego kanału RSS czy generowania wykresów w formacie SVG.
The paper discusses the importance of proper detection of color vision disorders, not only in professional [5, 13, 17], but also in everyday life [14, 15] and describes the interactive method for detecting colorblindness shown in Fig. 1. This method can be used both as a diagnostic tool (e.g. for improving the process of medical examination of candidates for drivers [13]) or for creating the database containing information about people with color vision disorders, allowing further research on the subject. The latter is especially important concerning all introduced or planned legal regulations on granting access to public information for anyone regardless of any criteria (e.g. disability) [11]. The author analyses the usage of XML for sharing data gathered by applications using the described interactive method for detecting color vision disorders. The possibilities of using other means offered by the XML standard, such as RSS channels or generating SVG charts are also discussed.

Niniejszy artykuł poświęcony jest specyfice funkcjonowania poznawczego niewidomych dzieci i nastolatków w zakresie postrzegania, uwagi, pamięci, przetwarzania informacji oraz Teorii Umysłu. Poruszone jest też zagadnienie jej wpływu na naukę języków obcych. Omówione są badania empiryczne dotyczące wpływu niepełnosprawności wzrokowej na funkcje poznawcze, a proces nauki języka obcego jest przedstawiony z punktu widzenia teorii, według których jest on wynikiem działań poznawczych zorientowanych na rozwijanie kompetencji komunikacyjnych. Sytuacja niewidomego ucznia na lekcji języka obcego jest omówiona zarówno z perspektywy trudności stojących przed niewidzącą osobą, ale także z punktu widzenia możliwości zmniejszenia luki pomiędzy osobami widzącymi i niewidzącymi dzięki treściom zawartym w podręcznikach do nauki języków obcych.
This paper deals with the specific character of cognitive functioning of blind children and adolescents with respect to perception, attention, memory, information processing and Theory of Mind. It also discusses the impact of this specificity on foreign language learning. Empirical research on the influence of visual impairment on cognitive functions is discussed, and foreign language learning is presented from the viewpoint of theories which look upon this process as a result of cognitive operations, oriented towards developing communicative competence. The situation of a blind learner in a foreign language class is discussed both from the perspective of challenges a blind student has to face and also from the perspective of opportunities to diminish the gap between the blind and the sighted thanks to the content included in foreign language textbooks.

Opis:
Glaucoma is one of the main causes of blindness worldwide. Periodical retinal screening is highly recommended in order to detect any sign of the disease and apply the appropriated treatment. Different systems for the analysis of retinal images have been designed in order to assist this process. The segmentation of the optic disc is an important step in the development of a retinal screening system. In this paper we present an unsupervised method for the segmentation of the optic disc. The main obstruction in the optic disc segmentation process is the presence of blood vessels breaking the continuity of the object. While many other methods have addressed this problem trying to eliminate the vessels, we have incorporated the blood vessel information into our formulation. The blood vessels inside of the optic disc are used to give continuity to the object to segment. Our approach is based on the graph cut technique, where the graph is constructed by considering the relationship between neighbouring pixels and by the likelihood of them belonging to the foreground and background from prior information. Our method was tested on two public datasets, DIARETDB1 and DRIVE. The performance of our method was measured by calculating the overlapping ratio (Oratio), sensitivity and the mean absolute distance (MAD) with respect to the manually labeled images.

Not blindness itself, but blindness as a symptom for an inner seeing and as a counterforce against a one-sided fixation on beauty and taste were the reasons why Marcel Duchamp from 1916 onwards was occupied with the theme of blindness. Two volumes of The Blind Man were displayed in 1917 on the exhibition of the Society of Independent Artists in New York. The second volume contained comments about the fact that Duchamp’s contribution of a Fountain, his now so famous ready-made Urinoir, signed “R. Mutt”, was rejected by the apparently jury-less committee. This means that the theme of blindness was expressed twice: no one could see the work and so his theoretical opposition against beauty and taste could not be illustrated by the Urinoir either. How Duchamp from then on also challenged the other senses, so as to avoid focusing only on the eyes, will be dealt with in this article as well. Arguments from the biography, philosophy, mythology, and iconography will be used to underpin the article’s main thesis. In this sense the question may be asked whether Duchamp was inspired in this group of his works by humorous etymological and literary references. In the end it will become clear that the theme of blindness in his work and artistic theory is highly paradoxical.

Opis:
Visual loss in the wilderness setting is potentially fatal. Firstly it may be a warning sign of a serious systemic problem and secondly the patient may lose their functional independence and ability to respond to objective danger. The issues discussed in this paper fall broadly into two categories, those that are unique to the high altitude setting and those that could happen anywhere but require treatment to protect vision then standard ophthalmological care is unavailable. The aims are to provide practical knowledge on how to manage simple eye problems and also how to recognize the warning signs when evacuation may be required. In keeping with all wilderness medicine, preparation and prevention are essential to avoid eye problems in the mountains. This paper is intended for physicians, interested non-medical people and expedition operators as a practical guide to the treatment and prevention of eye problems on expeditions.

This article explores the role of an international open society of mental health stakeholders in raising awareness of values and thereby reducing the vulnerability of psychiatry to abuse. There is evidence that hidden values play a key role in rendering psychiatry vulnerable to being used abusively for purposes of social or political control. Recent work in values-based practice aimed at raising awareness of values between people of different ethnic origins has shown the importance of what we call “values auto-blindness” – a lack of awareness of one’s own values as a key part of our background “life-world” – in driving differential rates of involuntary psychiatric treatment between ethnic groups. It is argued that the vulnerability of psychiatry to abuse stems from values auto-blindness operating on the judgments of rationality implicit in psychiatric diagnostic concepts. Acting like a “hall of mirrors,” an international open society of mental health stakeholders would counter the effects of values auto-blindness through enhanced mutual understanding of the values embedded in our respective life-worlds across and between the diverse perspectives of its constituents. The article concludes by noting that a model for the required open society is available in the contemporary interdisciplinary field of philosophy and psychiatry.

The article discusses the issue of blind and visually impaired people’s preferences in choosing assistive technology. Assistive technology is an important tool for them as it helps in the process of education, communication and mobility by compensating the lack of visual information. The article, which is based on a research, shows possibilities and barriers of using AT by people with vision problems and places a special emphasis on the social factors determining preferences in choosing hardware and software. Review and analysis of empirical data allowes to formulate important conclusions for the practice of education and rehabilitation of the blind and visually impaired people.
W artykule podjęto zagadnienie preferencji osób z dysfunkcją wzroku w zakresie korzystania z informacyjno-komunikacyjnych technologii wspomagających. Osoby niewidome i słabowidzące dzięki wykorzystaniu technologii wspomagających kompensują brak lub ograniczenie informacji dostarczanych kanałem wzrokowym, koniecznych do zdobywania wiedzy, komunikowania się i mobilności. W artykule omówiono możliwości i bariery wykorzystania technologii wspomagających przez osoby z dysfunkcją wzroku ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem czynników społecznych warunkujących preferencje wyboru sprzętu i oprogramowania – na podstawie badań (głównie zagranicznych) podejmujących te kwestie. Przegląd i analiza danych empirycznych posłużyły do sformułowania wniosków istotnych dla praktyki tyflopedagogicznej.
