Opis:
From the times of Leon Kanner, autism was presented as a clinical image of behaviours. The descriptions were as comprehensive as possible, the diagnostic systems and therapies were optimised, and the analyses of various approaches to the etiology of autism were carried out. The contemporary knowledge is founded mainly on the analyses of behaviours, observations, and experiments. Cognition or self-awareness, which is a priority concept in this matter, can also be seen in the objects human beings create: in this case, people diagnosed with autism. The research was conducted at the turn of 2018 and 2019. The aim of the study was acquiring knowledge of autism perception by the individuals who are affected by ASD and able to communicate, according to the age and sex of the respondents. The research was conducted on 168 individuals diagnosed with autism (90 women and 78 men). The innovative aspect of this project lies in using the netnography method for collecting and analysing data. The findings of the research have helped to expand the knowledge of problems that ASD individuals experience and have allowed the subjects of the research to share their own perspectives, including the effect of social labeling on their position in the society.

Autism is a disorder involving a number of symptoms. It is included in the overall development disorders. The disease is characterized by spreading and progressive behavioural disorders, usually manifesting in early childhood and continuing also through adulthood. Epidemiological data emphasize the importance of the problem and the need to develop studies using modern molecular methods and next-generation sequencing techniques. and in the 1990’s – 10–20 per 10,000. Latest indexes show that child autism and Asperger syndrome affect 1 in 38 children. Recently, there has been published a detailed study on the intestinal microflora in children with autism, showing differences in the spectrum of microorganisms in sick and healthy children. One of the most striking discoveries is the fact that functions of the intestinal microflora and functions of the brain are connected. Therefore, it is possible that microbiome may influence a person’s behaviour and mental health. In the past, the impact of intestinal microflora on the development of autism was ignored, but today it is important. Digestive tract disorders occurring in children with autism can have various natures and locations. As of now, a single autism-specific digestive tract pathology cannot be claimed to exist. As in elimination diets, treatment should be conducted on an individual basis.

The aim of this article is to present the results of research into how mothers of individuals with ASD perceive school sex education. The article aims to contribute to the discussion on the need to introduce changes in the Polish education system as far as the area of sexuality is concerned. The study was carried out in two parts, at time intervals. The results were obtained only from mothers, which corresponds with the conclusion that mothers talk about matters of sexuality more often than fathers do and with daughters rather than with sons. The results indicate that mothers want to influence the sex education of their children, at the same time having no knowledge of what topics they are pursuing or can pursue with their child during formal sex education at school (education for living in a family).

Opis:
While diagnostic criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) is clear, misconceptions of ASD create barriers and challenges for children with ASD and their interaction in the educational environment around them. The social model of disability states people with disabilities are more limited by social constraints than actual impairment (Llewellyn and Hogan, 2000). In hopes to diminish these social constraints, continued education and progression of programs for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders is essential. When observing the different teaching strategies educators used to assist children with ASD, no one educational strategy was deemed appropriate for use. Findings revealed there were no defined guidelines on how to interact with autistic children and left teachers to use their own teaching methods. Literature reflect a lack of educational strategies for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders in an academic setting; at the various grade levels. One of the newer strategies to be investigated is the role of physical activity in children with ASD. Regular physical activity is highly beneficial towards the health of all children with or without disabilities. However, social and behavioral impairments leave little opportunity for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders to be successful in participating in physical activity; resulting in a possible higher risk of being inactive. Exercise options such as martial arts, swimming and yoga programs have been shown to be successful for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

The literature review focuses on the importance of stress in parents of a child with autism spectrum disorders, which significantly affects family life. The main cause of the burden are accompanying difficulties that are the part of disorder. This applies to specific reactions such as fits of anger, self-harm, psychomotor agitation, eating disorders, sleep disorders and other troubles which require almost 24-hour care. This review assesses several research studies that deal with the issue and which can be examples of good practice.

Introduction. The purpose of this study is to examine the nature and context of parent perspectives of physical activity for their children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Methods. In the study, one of the qualitative research methods, semi-structured interview technique was used as the research design phenomenology method. In addition to demographic information form, participants were asked about the factors that facilitate or constraints their children's participation in physical activity and the benefits of physical activity. Criterion sampling, one of the purposive sampling methods, was used in the study. The study group consisted of 11 parents whose ages ranged from 37 to 55 years (Mage = 44.09, SD = 6.59) and children participated to physical activity rehabilitation program which was carried out by a special education and rehabilitation center. Thematic analysis method was used for data analysis. Results. Three themes being constraints in physical activity, facilitators in physical activity and benefits of physical activity were reported. In the study, most frequently reported constraints were intrapersonal and the most commonly reported facilitator was also intrapersonal. Parents' opinions suggest that interpersonal factors and structural factors are important for special education students with ASD to continue their participation in physical activity. Conclusion. As a result, it is seen that the parents of individuals with ASD encounter some constraints in directing their children to physical activity, however due to the benefits obtained despite these constraints, their children continue to participate in physical activity.

Gluten is a widely used ingredient which causes viscosity and elasticity of the dough. The toxic effects of gluten found in humans are mainly based on immune reactions. Celiac disease is the most common gluten-dependent disease based on these reactions. One of the commonly used methods of diagnosis of celiac disease is a gluten provocation. Autism is becoming more and more recognized readily form of disability diagnosed in children. It is suggested that this impairment affects 1 in 68 children and is one of the five most common disability in the world. Autism spectrum disorders increasingly focuses scientific interest and raises discussions. Until now, autism often has been considered as a disease and autistic people are wrongly judged as geeks locked in their own world. On the Internet and the social media can be found films showing examples of people behavior affected by this disorder. There are various forums where parents and caregivers of people with autism exchange experiences about diet and treatments described as the "miracle cure". Immediately after the diagnosis of autism parents often decide to introduce their children a variety of diets, including gluten-free diet. They often live in the strong stress and alone in their efforts, and also they are almost deprived of specialist medical care. So the diet is often a selection of desperate parent or guardian, not a treatment supported by medical facts.

Young people living with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have less access to sports and physical activity. Even when they do, the instructors do not always have the training to include them adequately. This study aimed to identify barriers that young people with ASD may face and strategies to overcome these barriers. In order to meet the objectives of the study, semi-structured interviews were conducted with young people, parents, and caregivers. Then, a qualitative analysis of the interviews has allowed the identification of three types of barriers: related to ASD, related to the physical and social environments, and related to the physical activity itself. Three categories of coping strategies have also been identified by the participants. In order to help reduce the barriers, one should focus on the social environment, the activity, and communication strategies. This study confirms previous research and shows that there are effective ways to intervene with young people living with ASD in order to optimize their integration in sports and physical activity and that it can be done with little resources.

Individuals diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), the fastest growing disability group, exhibit varying degrees of intellectual ability. Students with ASD are increasingly held accountable to academic standards comparable to their peers. Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is widely considered best practice for supporting these students. Twenty-six single-case design (SCD) mathematics classroom teaching interventions, conducted with students diagnosed with ASD, were systematically located and reviewed in detail. Most interventions were conducted in special education mathematics classrooms involving low ability students. Interventions typically targeted simple mathematics skills, and a paucity of research addressing more complex mathematical skills was noted. Elsewhere in the literature, teachers who have students with ASD in their classrooms reported having received no autism training, and described subsequent stress and potential to burn-out as a result. A need for future research with high ability mathematics students is observed, and the relevance of a values paradigm approach is proposed.

Every child requires an individual and subjective approach – regardless of the difficulties they experience. Each of them has their own pace and rhythm of development. Children’s development can often be disharmonious. It’s important to know that a child’s age is not always equal to their developmental age. If we look at autistic children – their situation is even more complex. Developmental disharmony, difficulties in cognitive functioning, emotional and social communication deficits – just these few challenges mean that autistic children make up one of the most challenging groups to work with for educators. When setting up and executing therapeutic, educational and educational goals, designed to minimize these unwanted behaviors and develop positive ones, it’s easy for educators to forget that they are not working with a “case” but an individual human being. A human being for whom they take responsibility, shaping their internal and external world. Therefore, the choice of therapy goal, choice of methods or forms of work should never take superiority over the child’s individuality. Some authors claim that: “treatment of a child with autism is a race against time” – there is no way to disagree with this statement, but it is worth adding that it’s the child who should be managing that time.

Every year the prevalence of Autism Spectrum of Disorders (ASD) is rising. Is there a unifying mechanism of various ASD cases at the genetic, molecular, cellular or systems level? The hypothesis advanced in this paper is focused on neural dysfunctions that lead to problems with attention in autistic people. Simulations of attractor neural networks performing cognitive functions help to assess system long-term neurodynamics. The Fuzzy Symbolic Dynamics (FSD) technique is used for the visualization of attractors in the semantic layer of the neural model of reading. Large-scale simulations of brain structures characterized by a high order of complexity requires enormous computational power, especially if biologically motivated neuron models are used to investigate the influence of cellular structure dysfunctions on the network dynamics. Such simulations have to be implemented on computer clusters in a grid-based architectures.

The health crisis triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic temporarily suspended many of the existing rules and principles of the social order. This crisis can be described as social anomie. In this article, we explore the coping strategies of persons with disabilities in this state using the example of the families of individuals on the autism spectrum. While the neurodiversity of people on the spectrum is associated with adaptation difficulties and a low tolerance of change, the outbreak of the pandemic introduced abrupt changes in the functioning of institutions, the trajectories of daily life, and existing routines. The analysis of in-depth interviews conducted among parents of children on the autism spectrum shows how, in the face of radical changes in their external conditions, caregivers adapted the available measures to the developmental needs of their children and other family members. In the face of an anomic social order, innovation turned out to be the dominant coping strategy.
Analiza wywiadów pogłębionych przeprowadzonych wśród opiekunów dzieci w spektrum autyzmu pokazała, jak wobec diametralnych zmian warunków funkcjonowania opiekunowie dostosowali dostępne sposoby działania do potrzeb rozwojowych dzieci i pozostałych członków rodziny. Wobec anomijnego porządku społecznego dominującą strategią radzenia sobie okazała się innowacja.

Opis:
Cortisol is a hormone crucial for homeostasis of the human organism. Many researchers proved the role of cortisol and its normal release rhythm in healthy individuals. It led to further investigations of the abnormalities in cortisol levels in those affected by various disorders , especially with neuropsychiatric symptoms. Autism spectrum disorder is one of these conditions which have been intensively researched due to its core and secondary symptoms. We conducted a systematic review of articles in PubMed, including papers that met the search criteria “autism” and “cortisol”. After initial selection of relevant papers, we analyzed data from 56 articles. We divided data into subcategories of studies concerning cortisol diurnal profile, basal cortisol levels, Cortisol Awakening Response (CAR) and cortisol levels in reaction to certain stimuli. Data was unequivocal, however, abnormal diurnal profile, basal level, CAR or stressor response were found in many research groups. It led to suspicion that the abnormalities of cortisol release are a widely-spread phenomenon among individuals with autism spectrum disorder. Very limited data from therapeutic interventions indicated more clinical than biological response. This systematic review should be a drive to action for further randomized clinical trial on larger, homogenous group of patients to obtain more thorough insight into the role of cortisol in autism spectrum disorder.

Results: This study showed that Polish parents reported the lowest quality of life according to the WHOQOL–BREF. Parents from Belarus reported slightly worse HRQL than parents from France, though other aspects of quality of life (e.g, social sphere, somatic sphere) did not differ significantly between these parents. Parents from Poland also reported lower HQOL according to the KINDLR questionnaire, while parents from Belarus had a higher HQRL in the mental, physical, and self-esteem domains compared to parents from Poland and France. Conclusion: Parents from Poland with children with ASD reported lower HRQL both on the WHOQOL–BREF and KINDL R questionnaires compared to parents from Belarus and France.

Opis:
One of the features of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is the difficulty in social interaction, including communication deficits, emotional reciprocity and social skills. Problems in establishing and maintaining social relations and functioning in a group of peers are also a problem, what can lead to a feeling of loneliness. The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between the feeling of loneliness, traits of autism spectrum disorders and cognitive functioning – primarily in terms of verbal fluency. The study involved 50 adolescents with autism spectrum disorders aged 13 to 19 years and 50 adolescents with typical development. The study was conducted using questionnaire methods – Polish versions of De Jong Gierveld’s Sense of Loneliness Scale and Baron-Cohen's Autism Quotient Questionnaire. Cognitive functioning was also assessed. The results of the study showed that the feeling of loneliness is associated with both the occurrence of autism spectrum disorders and their severity. Moreover, the link between the feeling of loneliness and the results of cognitive tests in a group of teenagers with autism spectrum disorders was found. The results suggest that the perception of loneliness in the case of adolescents with autism spectrum disorders may be moderated by their level of cognitive functioning. These conclusions, however, require further research including additional measurements of cognitive functioning.

Relational approach to autism is a specific way of understanding needs of the child with development disorders based on three strong fundaments – psychoanalysis, development psychology and psychopathology. It is a result of complex research of typical development and identification of caretaker’s intuitive reactions, which support the child best and in a natural way. Relational therapy is not a remedy for every issue in autism. However, it should be an important, central element of a good-enough, holistic educational and therapeutic program. An introduction to other, educational-oriented activities, like learning which is a dyadic process of interaction between two people of whom one is always a teacher for another. Connection and relation should be an essence of every intervention dedicated to autistic children to, as a result, make the autism thaw.

Opis:
The article attempts to analyse the issue of students with autism spectrum disorders who attend two types of educational institutions – integrated classes in mainstream state school and special education institutions with separate classes for students with autism. Popularity and availability more often than effectiveness affect the choice of an educational institution. Parents’ decisions may also stem from lack of awareness of the scope of educational activities conducted in each institution. One of the measures of educational success is the evaluation of the quality of life in certain spheres of students’ lives.

Opis:
In this article I present views on the social foundations of understanding a language and using it in an intentional way in the context of its emergence, that is, emergence in the human race. Reaching for anthropolinguistic research allows to discover the essence of the communication process by which a person can achieve life goals. I mean communication competence. Cooperation is a skill that has evolved over the course of evolution to ensure that people survive in a dangerous and diverse world. the aim of the study was to analyze selected communication situations of children (three years old) suspected of having an autism spectrum in which the aspect of cooperation should be revealed. However, it turned out that in children with autism spectrum, speech development was blocked at the stage of regulation of interaction with the environment. The ability to cooperate led people to create highly organized societies whose relations are regulated through communication. This thesis should be an implication in the diagnosis and therapy of people with language communication disorders and delays in language acquisition, in order to develop in those patients the ability to interact, participate in different social situations, thus affecting their level of language, cognitive and executive skills.

Opis:
A key characteristic of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are the difficulties in social interaction, comprising deficits in communication, reflecting of emotional states, and social competences. Difficulties in establishing and maintaining social relationships and functioning in peer groups are also frequent, which can lead to intense feelings of loneliness. The aim of the current study was to examine the relationships between the sense of loneliness, the intensity of autism spectrum traits, and cognitive functioning – especially verbal fluency. Fifty adolescents with ASD, aged between 13 and 19 years, together with 50 typically developing adolescents took part in the study. The study had a questionnaire character and used the Polish versions of the De Jong Gierveld Sense of Loneliness Scale and the adolescent version of Simon Baron-Cohen’s Autism Quotient Questionnaire. The participants’ cognitive functioning was tested during individual in-person meetings. The results showed that the sense of loneliness is related both to the presence of ASD as well as the intensity of its expression. Some relationships between the sense of loneliness and cognitive functioning test results were also revealed in the group of adolescents with ASD. Based on the obtained results, it can be concluded that the perception of loneliness by ASD adolescents might be moderated by their level of cognitive functioning. However, these conclusions require further studies, which should include additional measures of cognitive functioning.
