Cyprian Norwid, będąc za Oceanem , napisał jeden z najpiękniejszych hymnów tęsknoty: Do kraju tego, gdzie kruszynę chleba Podnoszą z ziemi przez uszanowanie Dla darów nieba... Tęskno mi Panie... Zrzeszenie Literatów Polskich im. Jana Pawła II w Chicago powstało dnia 9 lipca 2006 r. Na założycielskim zebraniu w Związku Klubów Polskich obecny był gość z Polski – Maciej Andrzej Zarębski – honorowy członek zarządu ZLP JPII. Składy Zarządu Zrzeszenia Literatów Polskich im. Jana Pawła II w Chicago 2006-2013 W 2006 r. powołano zarząd (na kadencję 2006-2010), na czele którego stanęła prezeska Alina Szymczyk, jej zastępczynią została Elżbieta Chojnowska, sekretarzem – Władysław Panasiuk. Później uzupełniono skład zarządu o dwóch nowych członków, którymi byli Janusz Kopeć i Andrzej Chojnowski. Od lutego 2010 r. Zrzeszeniem zarządzali: prezeska – Alina Szymczyk, wiceprezes – Andrzej Chojnowski, sekretarz – Robert Paweł Redliński, członkowie – Janusz Kliś i Jan Kamiński, mąż zaufania – Józef Maciasz Broda. Od 18 stycznia 2012 r. do wyborów 21 marca 2012 r. zarząd pracował w składzie: Alina Szymczyk – prezeska, Andrzej Chojnowski – wiceprezes, sekretarz – Anna Konarska, członkowie – Janusz Kliś, Robert Paweł Redliński; komisja do spraw kontroli: Maria Mili Purymska, Józef Maciasz Broda (mąż zaufania). W dniu 21 marca 2012 r. odbyło się zebranie sprawozdawczo-wyborcze, na którym został wybrany nowy zarząd w składzie: Alina Szymczyk – prezeska, Andrzej Chojnowski – wiceprezes, Barbara Żubrowska – sekretarz protokołu, Maria Mili Purymska – sekretarz finansów, Józef Maciasz Broda – mąż zaufania, Jan Żółtek – przewodniczący komisji kontroli, Robert Paweł Redliński – delegat do ZKP (Związku Klubów Polskich). Członkowie i członkinie ZLP im. JPII Członkami lub członkiniami Zrzeszenia Literatów Polskich im. Jana Pawła II w Chicago, według stanu na czerwiec 2013 r. są (nazwiska w porządku alfabetycznym, jeśli nie zapisano inaczej – to krajem zamieszkania twórców są Stany Zjednoczone Ameryki Północnej): 1) Antoni Bosak, 2) Andrzej Chojnowski, 3) Leonard Gogiel, 4) Elżbieta Idziak, 5) Janusz Kliś, 6) Anna Marzena Konarska, 7) Józef Maciasz Broda, 8) Henryk Musa (Polska), 9) Władysław Janusz Obara (Polska), 10) Elżbieta Oliwkiewicz-Alen, 11) Bogusław Pacer, 12) Eleonora Przybyło-Trzpit, 13) Maria Mili Purymska, 14) Robert Paweł Redliński, 15) Anna Waluś Sikoń, 16) Marianna Maja Soroborska, 17) Ewa Sporna, 18) Grzegorz Stefanek, 19) Alina Szymczyk, 20) Izabela Trzaska-Przybylska, 21) Jan Żółtek, 22) Barbara Żubrowska. Honorowymi członkami ZLP im. JPII są Natalia Piekarska-Poneta oraz Maciej Andrzej Zarębski. Jezuici – opiekunowie duchowi poetów ZLP im. JPII Opiekunem duchowym ZLP im. JPII w 2006 r. stał się o. Władysław Gryzło SJ. Na samym początku istnienia biesiadował on z poetami podczas spotkań literackich. Nieco później w ZLP im. JP II pojawił się w charakterze opiekuna o. Tadeusz Kukułka SJ, lecz już po kilku miesiącach zasilił szeregi Jezuitów w Krakowie. Zastąpił go superior o. Stanisław Czarnecki SJ, a obecnie w 2013 r. opiekunem Zrzeszenia Literatów Polskich im. Jana Pawła II w Chicago jest o. Jerzy Karpiński SJ. Poeci świeccy oraz ich duchowni opiekunowie poznają się, zaprzyjaźniają, przywykają do siebie, a później się rozstają, gdy dany opiekun zostaje przeniesiony decyzją władz zakonnych na inną placówkę, ale trwała więź chicagowskich poetów polskich z Zakonem Jezuitów jest utrzymywana. Działalność ZLP im. JP II – spotkania poetyckie Choć siedzibą Zrzeszenia był budynek Związku Klubów Polskich, to jednak większość spotkań odbywała się w sali u Ojców Jezuitów w Chicago. Na początku grupa liczyła dziewięć osób, ale wciąż zgłaszali się nowi piszący. Poziom pisarstwa można ocenić jako zróżnicowany. Z jednej strony – przychodzili ludzie doświadczeni, ale z drugiej strony – nie brakowało również osób początkujących. Po to istnieje organizacja, aby pomagać wszystkim pisarzom, szczególnie zaś tym stawiającym pierwsze kroki. Wieczory poetyckie, organizowane przez ZLP im. JPII odbijały się szerokim echem w miejscowych mediach w Chicago. Wiele osób przychodziło na spotkania literackie, w tym – dziennikarze, publicyści z radia i telewizji, pisarze, ludzie kultury artystycznej. Wyłaniały się nowe nazwiska osób piszących, lecz wszyscy literaci byli promowani jednakowo bez względu na ich dorobek i umiejętności pisarskie. Wydano pierwsze tomiki, a wraz z nimi rysowała się radość na twarzach ich autorów. Pierwsze artykuły w prasie, radiowe wywiady nie mogły być literatom obojętne, to się twórcom podobało. Dzisiaj tylko garstka poetów pisze dla siebie, natomiast członkowie ZLP im. JP II za pośrednictwem internetu piszą dla całego świata. To okazuje się trudnym wyzwaniem, a grono czytelników ciągle wzrasta, przy czym nikt tak naprawdę nie wie, ilu ich jest? Głównym motorem organizacji ZLP im. JP II od początku była Alina Szymczyk, inni autorzy tylko jej pomagali. Organizowano wieczory z udziałem twórców, np. Krystyny Nowobilskiej, która najpiękniejsze lata swojego życia spędziła na nieludzkiej Syberii. Każdego miesiąca organizowane są spotkania dla poetów i prozaików, zarówno miejscowych, chicagowskich, jak i przyjeżdżających z Polski (np. Teresa Kaczorowska, Natalia Piekarska-Poneta). Nie wszyscy członkowie ZLP im. JP II są pisarzami i nie wszystkie wiersze nadają się do publikacji (zdarzają się także utwory mierne). Zrzeszenie Literatów wypromowało wiele osób piszących, od dłuższego czasu organizuje posiady poetyckie w połączeniu z warsztatami, które prowadzi Władysław Panasiuk. Poezja wymaga czasu i wytrwałości i wcale nie jest łatwą sztuką. Dwukrotnie prezeska Alina Szymczyk zorganizowała warsztaty pisarskie, które prowadziła Agnieszka Janik z Wrocławia. Wszystko to dla dobra piszących, bo pisanie wymaga ciągłego kształcenia i doskonalenia umiejętności. W Jezuickim Ośrodku Milenijnym w Chicago regularnie odbywają się Wiosny Poetyckie oraz Jesienie Poetyckie, czyli szukanie prawdziwych talentów. Na spotkania te przychodzą osoby niezrzeszone i czasami wstępują w szeregi ZLP im. JPII. Zarząd Zrzeszenia wielką wagę przywiązuje do ważnych rocznic i z tej okazji organizuje dla literatów chicagowskich patriotyczne wieczory. Podczas Opłatków Poetyckich płyną polskie kolędy. Należy wspomnieć, iż ze Zrzeszeniem Literatów przez wszystkie lata współpracują tutejsi aktorzy, dziennikarze i radiowcy. Od 2009 r. ZLP im. JP II ma własną stronę internetową: www.literaci.org, na której widnieje dorobek twórczy członków zrzeszenia i wiele nowości związanych z działalnością tej organizacji literackiej. Na stronie internetowej zamieszczane są teksty członków ZLP im. JP II, jak również teksty autorstwa przyjaciół z Polski. Na podstronach pomieszczono kalendarz imprez i wydarzeń, galerię zdjęć i wiele innych informacji. Wydawnictwa zbiorowe ZLP im. JP II (almanachy poezji) Zrzeszenie zaczęło wydawać almanachy literackie. Pierwszym był poświęcony patronowi tej organizacji literackiej, nosił tytuł Janowi Pawłowi II Chicagowscy poeci (2006). Każdego roku Świętokrzyskie Towarzystwo Regionalne w Zagnańsku – wydawnictwo Macieja Zarębskiego, który jest pisarzem, podróżnikiem i regionalistą, przyjacielem ZLP im. JP II, wydaje jeden zbiór poezji z udziałem twórców – członków chicagowskiego stowarzyszenia. Niektóre książki zbiorowe wydawane są także wspólnie przez wspomniane Świętokrzyskie Towarzystwo Regionalne w Zagnańsku i Zrzeszenie Literatów Polskich im. Jana Pawła II w Chicago (wtedy miejsce wydania podano: Zagnańsk-Chicago). Zrzeszenie może się poszczycić kilkoma antologiami. Pierwsza wspomniana już książka zbiorowa pt. Janowi Pawłowi II Chicagowscy Poeci (Zagnańsk 2006), zawierała wiersze autorstwa dziewiętnastu poetów. Publikacja zawiera także tekst Od Redakcji M. A. Zarębskiego, nadto Słowo wstępne o. Władysława Gryzło SJ i Aliny Szymczyk, Posłowie Zdzisława Tadeusza Łączkowskiego. Drugą zbiorową pozycją jest antologia pt. Powroty, (Zagnańsk 2008), w której wiersze zamieściło osiemnastu autorów. Tekst Od Redakcji napisał Maciej A. Zarębski, a Słowo wstępne – o. Władysław Gryzło SJ i Władysław Panasiuk. Trzecia antologia pt. Czy może być inaczej (Zagnańsk 2009) zawierała wiersze autorstwa dwudziestu trzech twórców. Wstęp do tej książki napisała Alina Szymczyk. Trzy odrębne promocje trzech wspomnianych zbiorowych książek literackich miały miejsce w chicagowskim Jezuickim Ośrodku Milenijnym (JOM). Czwarta antologia poetycka pt. Spojrzenie (Zagnańsk 2009) zawierała utwory poetyckie autorstwa czterech poetów (cztery części książki odrębnie zatytułowane): Aliny Szymczyk – Modlitwa, Janusza Klisia – Kwiaty w moim oknie, Janusza Kopcia – Jedna czwarta, Władysława Panasiuka „(...) z nich zaś największa jest miłość”. Słowo wstępne do Spojrzeń napisał Władysław Panasiuk, natomiast Posłowie Maciej A. Zarębski. Odbyły się dwie promocje tej antologii – jedna w chicagowskim JOM, druga – w ‘Cafe Prague’ w Chicago. Piątą antologię pt. Droga do światła: almanach patriotyczno-religijny poetów chicagowskich (Zagnańsk–Chicago 2010) wydano ze Słowem wstępnym Aliny Szymczyk i Posłowiem autorstwa o. Jerzego Karpińskiego SJ. Szóstą książką zbiorową poetów z Chicago jest publikacja pt. Bez złudzeń: antologia poetów chicagowskich (Zagnańsk-Chicago 2010) także ze Wstępem Aliny Szymczyk i Posłowiem o. Jerzego Karpińskiego. Do siódmej antologii pt. Sursum Corda – w górę serca: wiersze i proza (Zagnańsk 2012) Wstęp napisał Władysław Panasiuk, natomiast Posłowie Alina Szymczyk, a recenzję wydawniczą – prof. Kazimierz Braun z Uniwersytetu Buffalo. W druku w 2013 r. jest następna, ósma pozycja pt. Wyznanie emigranta. Wydawnictwa indywidualne członków i członkiń ZLP im. JP II (tomiki poetyckie) Rokrocznie drukowane są nowe tomiki indywidualne, bo każdy poeta ma ambicję i chce pozostawić po sobie zapisany ślad. Nie wszystkie wydane przez członków ZLP im. JP II książki należą do dzieł z „górnej półki”, ale ważniejsza jest wola pisania i pożyteczne wykorzystanie czasu na twórczość. Członkinie i członkowie Zrzeszenia Literatów Polskich im. Jana Pawła II w Chicago wydały / wydali własne tomiki poetyckie (niektóre osoby nawet po kilka). Poniżej podano niepełny wykaz indywidualnych tomików członków i członkiń ZLP im. JP II w porządku alfabetycznym (według nazwisk autorów / autorek).

It compares and contrasts the association between World Literature and Comparative Literature to that between International American Studies and the American Studies movement emerging out of the United States. It goes on to argue that World Literature is anchored to a universalist teleology, one linked historically to an idealist intellectual genealogy. By contrast, International American Studies involves a more materialist, multidirectional emphasis that differentiates it from the U.S. appropriation of globalization to further its own strategic interests. El objeto de estudio de este trabajo es el tema de la identidad en la novela de Cristina García intitulada Soñar en cubano (1992). Su relevancia, sugerida ya en el mismo título, se explica fácilmente con la pertenencia de la novela en cuestión al amplio conjunto de la literatura hispana de los Estados Unidos (N. Kanellos, Y. Flores, Gustavo Pérez Firmat) o con la crisis de la identidad del yo de la era posmoderna. Sin embargo, el lugar privilegiado de los lazos matrilineales o de la naturaleza (los constantes flujo y reflujos del mar) en la conformación de la identidad de los personajes invita a una lectura de esta obra en clave feminista. Teniendo en cuenta las muchas convergencias que se divisan entre la novela en cuestión y las teorías del feminismo francés, especialmente las propuestas por Luce Irigaray, serán sus ideas sobre las que se arme el marco metodológico del presente trabajo.

In The Rhetoric of Empire (1993), David Spurr analyzes journalistic discourse on the Third World and isolates a nucleus of rhetorical figures around which representations of the colonial and post-colonial other are articulated. In this paper, I will borrow, in particular, three of these rhetorical figures (naturalization, idealization, appropriation) and I will adapt them to the context of contemporary Anglo-American representations of Italian culture in popular literature. I will argue that a substantial number of contemporary works on Italy retains the basic assumption of a world ordered around a dichotomy between modern cultures and pre-modern ones, and makes of this taxonomy the basic spatiotemporal context for its narratives.

Opis:
The return of life-writing genres, biographical writing in particular, to the heart of present-day literary practices remains one of the most interesting phenomena in contemporary literature written in English. The article discusses a number of narratives (written by biographers, literary critics and novelists) which have emerged in the last decades and which attempt to present and critically analyse the life of Henry James, the master of American fiction at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The author recapitulates on the major trends in contemporary biographical practices which address the life of Henry James – especially the conclusions reached by biographers and critics associated with Marxism, Deconstruction, Feminism and Queer Theory. Moreover, the article investigates the phenomenon of the nearly simultaneous arrival of several biographical novels about Henry James.

During his two-year stay in America Cyprian Norwid wrote one of the most beautiful hymns of longing: “ For the country where a piece of bread Is picked up from the ground with respect Due to a heavens’ gift... I am longing, my Lord...". The Polish Writers Association of John Pope II (PWA) was founded on 9th July 2006. Maciej Andrzej Zarębski, a guest from Poland and honarary member of the Board of PWA, was present at the first official meeting of the Association. Members of the Board of PWA in Chicago in the years 2006-2013 The Board of the Polish Writers Association was formed for the term of 2006-2010 and Alina Szymczyk was elected President of the Association, Elżbieta Chojnowska – Vice-President and Władysław Panasiuk – Secretary. Later, Janusz Kopeć and Andrzej Chojnowski were added to the Board as new members. Since February 2010 to March 2012 the PWA was directed by the President –Alina Szymczyk, the Vice-President – Andrzej Chojnowski, the Secretary – Robert Paweł Redliński, the Members – Janusz Kliś and Jan Kamiński, and the Man of Trust – Józef Maciasz Broda. Since 18th January 2012 to the election of 21st March 2012 the Board consisted of the following persons: President – Alina Szymczyk, Vice-President – Andrzej Chojnowski, Secretary – Anna Konarska, the Members: Janusz Kliś, Jan Kamiński, Man of Trust – Józef Maciasz Broda. On 21st March 2012 an election meeting took place and a new board was created: President – Alina Szymczyk, Vice-President – Andrzej Chojnowski, Secretary – Barbara Żukrowska, Financial Secretary – Maria Mili Purymska, Man of Trust – Józef Maciasz Broda, President of the Control Committee – Jan Żółtek, Delegate of ZKP (Związek Klubów Polskich, the Polish Clubs Alliance) – Robert Paweł Redliński. Members of the Polish Writers Association On 23rd June 2013 the John Paul II Polish Writers Association included the following members (names given in the alphabetical order; if not written otherwise - the country of residence is the United States of America): 1) Antoni Bosak, 2) Andrzej Chojnowski, 3) Leonard Gogiel, 4) Elżbieta Idziak, 5) Janusz Kliś, 6) Anna Marzena Konarska, 7) Józef Maciasz Broda, 8) Henryk Musa, 9) Wadysław Janusz Obara (Poland), 10) Elżbieta Oliwkiewicz-Alen, 11) Bogusław Pacer, 12) Eleonora Przybyło-Trzpit, 13) Maria Mili Purymska, 14) Katarzyna Murawska, 15) Robert Paweł Redliński, 16) Anna Waluś Sikoń, 17) Marianna Maja Soroborska, 18) Ewa Sporna, 19) Grzegorz Stefanek, 20) Alina Szymczyk, 21) Izabela Trzaska-Przybylska, 22) Jan Żółtek, 23) Barbara Żubrowska. Natalia Poneta Piekarska and Maciej Andrzej Zarębski are the honorary members of the John Paul II Polish Writers Association. The Jesuits – spiritual guardians of the John Paul II Polish Writers Association Father Władysław Gryzło SJ became a spiritual guardian of the PWA when it was founded, i.e. in 2006. At the beginning he attended the literary meetings of the poets as a convivial guest. A little later Father Tadeusz Kukułka SJ replaced him as a mentor of the PWA, but shortly afterwards he was called back to join his congregation in Krakow. His replacement was Father Superior Stanisław Czarnecki SJ; at present the spiritual guardian of the Association is Father Jerzy Karpiński SJ. Secular poets and their spiritual guardians meet, become friends and then have to part when the mentors are transferred to other posts by their religious authorities, but a close connection between the Polish Chicago poets and the Jesuit Society is maintained. Activities of the John Paul II Polish Writers Association – poetry meetings Although the location of the Association was the building of the Polish Club Alliance, most meetings took place in the Jesuit Center in Chicago. At the beginning the group consisted only of nine persons, but new members were joining in and were added to the list. They represented various levels of the art of writing. On the one hand, among the members there were experienced writers, but on the other – there were many who were just beginners. The main aim of the Association has been to help all the writers, particularly those that are starting their careers. Evenings of poetry reading, organized by the Association, were getting considerable coverage in local media in Chicago. Many people came to the literary meetings, among them journalists working for the press as well as those working for radio and television, professional writers, people involved in culture and art. From the beginning the Association supported new writers, providing similar promotion for them regardless of their origin and previous work. The first poetry volumes were published which brought joy and satisfaction to their authors. Press reviews and interviews in local radio stations were helpful to the writers to reach their readers. Now only a few poets write for their own circles, whereas the members of the PWA write for the whole world making use of the Internet. It is an ambitious challenge, but the number of the readers is growing constantly, and, in fact, no one knows their exact number. The main force behind the organization has always been Alina Szymczyk, the other authors were only helping her. There were meetings with such writers as, for instance, Krystyna Nowobilska who spent the best years of her life in Syberia. Each month there are meetings organized for new poets and writers both the local ones from Chicago, as well as outsiders. (Teresa Kaczorowska, Natalia Piekarska-Poneta). Not all the members of the PWA are writers and poets and not all the poems meet the requirements for publication, but still the PWA has published and has helped to promote many new names. For some time now the PWA has been organizing workshops conducted by Wladyslaw Panasiuk. Poetry needs patience and time and is not an easy task. Alina Szymczyk, President of the Association, has organized two workshops led by Agnieszka Janik from Wrocław. All this has been done for the benefit of the writers as writing requires constant education and improvement of its skills. The Jesuit Center in Chicago regularly hosts such events as Poets’ Spring and Poets’ Fall which provide occasions for finding true poetic talents. It also has to be mentioned that the PWA has been supported by the local actors, radio announcers and television. Since 2009 the WPA has its own internet site (www.literaci.org) where you can find the catalogue of the achievements of all the members as well as the news about the activities of the Association. Joint publications of the PWA The WPA has been publishing literary almanacs since 2006. The first publication of this kind was devoted to the patron of the Association – John Paul II. Every year the Regional Society in Zagnansk, the publishing house of Maciej Zarębski who is a traveler, a writer and a regionalist, issues one volume of poetry which includes some members of the WPA among its contributors. The presented article is a conceptual work. It examines the poetry of Anna Frajlich-Zając (born in 1942-). The article aims at presenting Frajlich’s poetry using a very unique perspective of God and religion, which was never applied to her poetry in the past. It is also an attempt to comprehensively envision this poetry as the “palimpsest of meanings” that leads to polyphony of aesthetic values. The research method applied to the article is based on thematic critique. We also use the principles of the “hermeneutic circle” by Wilhelm Dilthey (1833-1911) to conduct the analysis. The “hermeneutic circle” stresses synergistic effects between the “whole” and “parts” of poetic writings. Finally, we underline Frajlich’s symbolic imagination as part of our methodology. The article shows an evolving structure of the idea of God and religion in the poetry of Anna Frajlich. It introduces the concept of “homo viator,” “religious syncretism,” and “closed”/“open” religion. It provides the unique interpretation of Frajlich’s poetry. The intellectual conclusions of the article are not limited to academia and journalism. They are useful to investigate popular culture and links that exist among religion, literature as well as philosophy. The results of this analysis can lead to new solutions in the humanities (literature, art, and philosophy). Also, they provide grounds for further research. The article is socially applicable in academia. It could be interesting for students as well as educators/academic instructors. The article provides a new and creative analysis of literary writings by Frajlich.
Artykuł jest rodzajem tekstu konceptualnego. Analizuje on poezję Anny Frajlich, posługując się ideą Boga i religii, co prowadzi w rezultacie do oryginalnych rozwiązań. Jest on próbą całościowego opisania tej poezji (definiowanej, jako „palimpsest znaczeń”), która odsłania polifonię jakości estetycznych. Metodologia artykułu opiera się głównie na krytyce tematycznej oraz założeniach hermeneutyki Wilhelma Diltheya (1833-1911). Koło hermeneutyczne jest postrzegane w tej analizie jako zależność interpretacyjna pomiędzy „częścią” i „całością” dzieła. Wychodzimy z założenia, że jednostkowa oraz izolowana „część” poszczególnych utworów wiedzie nieuchronnie w stronę ukrytej, semantycznej „całości” w poezji Anny Frajlich. Artykuł odsłania rozwijającą się strukturę tej poezji i wprowadza różnorodne pojęcia („homo viator”, „synkretyzm religijny”, „zamknięta / otwarta religia” i inne), aby ją całościowo opisać. Analiza taka odsłania głębokie i unikalne warstwy wyobraźni poetyckiej Anny Frajlich. Wnioski i rozwiązania intelektualne, proponowane w artykule, mogą być przydatne nie tylko w badaniach naukowych, kręgach uniwersyteckich lub dziennikarskich. Są one również pomocne w definiowaniu współczesnych założeń kultury popularnej i socjologii kultury oraz relacji istniejących pomiędzy religią, literaturą i filozofią. Mogą one, ponadto, prowadzić do nowych odkryć w dziedzinie nauk humanistycznych, bo badanie linii rozwojowej (znaczenie Boga i religii) w poezji Anny Frajlich jest nowe, twórcze oraz oparte na utworach, wydanych zarówno w języku polskim jak i angielskim.

W niniejszym artykule chciałbym przybliżyć czytelnikom nieznaną w naszym regionie anglojęzyczną twórczość Patricii Nell Warren na przykładzie jej najbardziej znanego utworu The Front Runner (1974), powieści, w której autorka porusza kwestie homofobii i mizoginii w sporcie, jak również różne doświadczenia ujawniania homo-seksualnej orientacji dwóch pokoleń mężczyzn. Biorąc pod uwagę koncepcję potrójnej mimesis Paula Ricoeura, skupię się na relacji między własnym doświadczeniem autorki a narracyjną problematyką powieści, jak również wieloznaczną recepcją utworu wśród przedstawicieli społeczności LGBTQ+. Pragnę pokazać, że w kontekście amerykańskim The Front Runner może pełnić rolę tekstu kultury i medium pamięci, a dla nowych europejskich czytelników stanowić potencjalne źródło pamięci protetycznej, dostarczające literacką reprezentację doświadczenia ujawnienia orientacji homoseksualnej i zmieniających się postaw społecznych wobec niebinarnych ról płciowych i nieheteroseksualności zaraz po zamieszkach w Stonewall i przed epidemią AIDS. Pragnę też zauważyć, że zapoznanie polskich czytelników z prozą Warren może stać się impulsem do queerowej reinterpretacji wcześniejszej poezji autorki Tragedii pszczół.
Before coming out of the closet and publishing a series of successful gay novels, Patricia Nell Warren was known as Patricia Kilina, wife of a Ukrainian émigré writer George Tarnawsky. Her early poetry, written in Ukrainian, includes numerous references to non-traditional gender roles which she further explored in her anglophone novels. The Front Runner (1974) was published when Warren had already divorced her husband and came out of the closet. It was met with commercial success and became the first contemporary American bestseller about gay love. In this paper, I focus on the mixed reader-response of The Front Runner in the LGBTQ+ community, as well as the role of homophobia and misogyny in Patricia Nell Warren’s novel. I argue that The Front Runner provides readers with a thought-provoking literary representation of the changing social attitudes towards non-binary gender roles and non-heterosexuality right after Stonewall and before the AIDS epidemic.

Opis:
The transformation of literary models was born out of a process initiated by the avant-garde and is still present nowadays in the form of the post avant-garde, understood as the creation of many new manifestations of literary expressions, including digital literature. The aim of the article is to analyse the forms, changes and structures of digital literature in comparison to the procedures of so-called “traditional literature”. The methodology is based on comparative literature. The topic is viewed from the perspective of Ibero-American literature exemplified with proto-hypertexts, hypertexts and literary hypermedia from Latin America. As a summary, we can say that digital literature is not going to change literature, but it is going to introduce new literary aesthetics which, in turn, will provide literature with new, different, and experimental narrative structures.
Transformacja modeli literackich zrodziła się z procesu zapoczątkowanego awangardą i trwającego do dziś w postaci postawangardy, rozumianej jako kreacja wielu nowych przejawów ekspresji literackiej, wśród których znajduje się literatura cyfrowa. Celem artykułu jest analiza form, zmian i struktur literatury cyfrowej w porównaniu z procedurami tzw. „literatury tradycyjnej”. Metodologia pracy opiera się na literaturze porównawczej. Temat potraktowany został z perspektywy literatury iberoamerykańskiej, za przykład posłużyły protohipertksty, hiperteksty i hipermedia literackie z obszaru Ameryki Łacińskiej. Odnosząc się do wniosków możemy powiedzieć, że literatura cyfrowa nie zmieni literatury, jedynie zaproponuje nowe estetyki literackie, a w ramach nich odmienne i eksperymentalne struktury narratologiczne.

Miłosz’s volume Światło dzienne (Daylight, 1953) is conventionally read by critics as political poetry deeply engaged with history. The article offers a corrective to this traditional reading by interpreting the volume as interplay of European and American influences. As a European poet, Miłosz had experienced the violent demise of ideals at the foundation of the Old World. Światło dzienne is, therefore, at one level, an elegiac volume in which both persons and ideas are mourned. On the other hand, to the extent that America continues for Miłosz the noble ideas abandoned in Europe, he cannot accept what he regards as their misguided or perverse incarnations. This explains the emotional climate of the whole volume, with its dominant mood of disappointment, anger and refusal of reconciliation. Światło dzienne is American in its outlook in taking seriously America’s status as a superpower and its influence on the future direction of global history. It is anti-American, however, in identifying America’s perceived failures to live up to the post-war challenge for human civilization in general and the consequent dangers. The article intends to assess Miłosz’s debt to English-language poetry in this volume in light of his personal notes from his reading and translation work at the time.

Especially after 1776, when the American democratic “experiment” giving rise to the United States proved durable, America became a source of social and political inspiration to generations of Europeans and non-Europeans alike. Unsurprisingly, also in the Italian context, the catalog of ways in which American values have been “translated into Italian” and adapted to Italy’s cultural space seems to be ever-growing. Yet, even though the cultural transfer dates back to Christopher Columbus, it is especially since the outbreak of World War II that Italy has been markedly influenced by intellectual and material values generated in the US. At some point, the fascination with the US soared to such a level that, incredibly as it may sound, one of the most iconic provinces of Italy would begin to imagine itself as the forty-ninth state of the US long before Alaska and Hawaii gained their present-day status: in Sicily, the American fascination seems never to abate.

Given the historical proximity of Polish and Jewish groups, it is possible to identify their mutual interconnectedness. This paper presents one such example of the stereotypical Jewish Mother, in Israel known as a “Polish woman,” both in its sociohistorical and cultural aspect. Drawing from the theory of gendered and stereotypical representations, author traces a changing portrayal of the Jewish Mother on her way from the ghetto penury to middle-class affluence. Embodied by popular characters such as Molly Goldberg, the Jewish mother also became a target of bitter criticism, best rendered in the depiction of Sophie Portnoy-the iconic protagonist of Philip Roth’s novel Portnoy’s Complaint (1967). Feminist re-readings of this popular stereotype offer an interesting insight into its construction and try to explain its viability.

Artykuł przedstawia najważniejsze głosy krytyki hiszpańskojęzycznej i polskiej dotyczące najważniejszych bloków tematycznych w interpretacji dzieła Augusto Roa Bastosa i przedstawia polską recepcję dzieła tego paragwajskiego pisarza. Zestawia się w tekście opinie dotyczące tylko trzech książek przetłumaczonych na język polski: dwóch powieści Syn człowieczy i Ja, Najwyższy oraz zbioru Kurupí i inne opowiadania. Inną kwestią jest umieszczenie twórczości Augusto Roa Bastosa w kontekście boomu oraz „nowej powieści latynoamerykańskiej”. Ważnymi tematami są przede wszystkim kwestia dwujęzyczności i dwukulturowości w pisarstwie Roa Bastosa. Pisarstwo Roa Bastosa stanowi świadectwo o kulturze i domaga się także sprawiedliwości społecznej, wpisując się w tak zwany „społeczny realizm magiczny”. To szkic o Roa Bastosie jako nieco zapomnianym klasyku literatury latynoamerykańskiej XX wieku, z uwzględnieniem zwłaszcza najnowszych badań i opracowań na gruncie polskim.
This article presents the most important Hispanic and Polish voices of criticism concerning the most important thematic blocks in the interpretation of works by Augusto Roa Bastos and presents the Polish reception of the works by this Paraguayan author. Summarized in the text are opinions concerning only the three books translated into Polish: two novels Son of Man, and I, the Supreme, and the collection Kurupí and other tales. Another issue is to place the works of Augusto Roa Bastos and in the context of boom as well as „new Latin-American novel”. Important topics are first and foremost a matter of bilingualism and biculturalism in the writings of Roa Bastos. The writings of Roa Bastos are a testimony about the culture and also a demand for social justice, by typing in the so-called “social magic realism”. This is a sketch about Roa Bastos as a somewhat forgotten twentieth century Latin American literature classic.
